You awaken slowly, first becoming aware of the warmth and comfort of your bed. Light streams through your bedroom window and the smell of burnt paper fills the air. For a time your thoughts drift lazily through the haze of sleep, flitting from one thing to the next without any semblance of order or reason. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, and as the events of the day before come to the forefront of your mind you force yourself to sit up.

Glancing around your room reveals that the damage from that fire the spirits caused was minimal, but it looks like a decent chunk of the books in your private library were reduced to ash. A shame, you hadn't even really taken the time to look through them yet. You'll probably need to replace the shelves and the rugs in that quarter of your bedroom, but other than that the room seems in good shape. No smoke damage or scorch marks anywhere else.

Throwing back the covers you find that someone's taken the time to undress you. Your robes have been folded neatly and sit on top of your dresser, while your cloak has been hung on a hook by the door. Your boots are arranged neatly on the floor next to your bedside table, it looks like they might have been polished. You climb out of bed and spend a few minutes just getting dressed, stretching the stiffness of sleep from your limbs in the process.

The Forest King's Crown has been removed and sits inert on top of the bedside table. A pulse of nature magic reveals nothing out of the ordinary, no tendrils of vys stretching from the crown to the far flung corners of the world. Consciously you realize that it ought to be safe to wear, but for now you just toss it into your cloak to deal with later. Better safe than possessed by ancient spirits beyond mortal ken, as the saying goes.

A glance out the window reveals it to be a few hours past noon, meaning you've probably just slept for something like eighteen hours. You should probably find one of your companions and ask them what happened after you passed out, but you haven't eaten since that Bastani you had yesterday afternoon. You're hungry enough that the prospect of gnawing through sarada hide doesn't seem wholly unappetizing.

Eh, I don't know about that. It would weaken blows for sure, but enchantments can still be overpowered. Like poles won't touch, but if you push hard enough you can jam a pair of magnets together anyway.

The way I see it, it'd work best against slashing blows that can be easily redirected without loss of momentum, since their inertia is at an angle to the repulsion. Thrusts and stabs would have all their inertia directly against the repelling force, so they'd be harder to shift off course and could potentially muscle through.

{I've been working on preparing potions, in case a healer should ever be unavailable I have salves to staunch bleeding and prevent infection as vials of smelling salts to restore to consciousness anyone who might succumb to the Elaudian plant life. I've also been reading up on what your people know of Elaudia, although finding books written in a language I can understand has been difficult.

{Based on what I've read I've prepared a number of compounds which I think should help us deal with the both the flora and fauna. I've prepared simple insecticides, tranquilizers, poisons designed to paralyze, to kill, or to cripple any enemies we might face. I've also distilled a few bottles of highly potent acid. Right now in fact I'm working on a concoction which should purge the body of toxins.}

Once you've shut the door, you make your way to the center of the room and sink down onto the rug laid out in front of your fireplace. You assume a meditative pose with your legs folded beneath you and your hands rested on your thighs, closing your eyes. Instead of letting your consciousness slip away you focus on your memory of your spiritual battle, of carving away chunks of your soul in the hopes of destabilizing the spirits latched onto it.

What you really focus on though is the very end of your battle, when the holes in the stone shell which surround the shard of divinity within your soul sealed up. You focus on how the stone was transformed from dull black stone, to gleaming gold. The holes which were rent in the surface of the spirit wherever it touched.

The sounds of the city and of your estate slowly fade to nothing as you enter your meditative trance, the moment of contact between your soul and the spirit replaying endlessly in your head. You come to realize something as you watch the memory play out again and again. Where the spirit touched your soul, it was not merely annihilated. Rather you can see the spirit's 'flesh', if a spirit can truly be said to have 'flesh' breaking down and its composite parts being absorbed by the golden shell around your soul. Oddly enough, rather than also absorbing the spirit's divine essence the spirit's essence seems propelled rapidly away from the golden shell around your soul.

You wonder if perhaps the shell is, in some way, similar in nature to a Spirit's divine essence. Perhaps rather than the soul being a minuscule shard of divinity within mortals, the material that composes a soul and the divine essence which spirits are composed of are two opposite sides of the same coin, so to speak? Still, you're not sure why that would cause your soul to absorb the spirit's 'flesh' but repel its essence. Perhaps by reinforcing the shell around your soul you somehow altered its structure?

Regardless, you definitely get the sense that this phenomena requires greater study. You should practice that meditation you discovered within the Metal Codex more often, if you wish to truly understand the nature of the soul and how it can be manipulated.

Before withdrawing from your meditative trance you take a few moments to assess yourself, sinking deeper and deeper into thoughtless oblivion until your soul, golden gleaming beacon of light that it is, becomes visible. It seems more... radiant than usual. As though somehow empowered. Yet, at the same time it seems frayed. The edges shift and lose cohesion seemingly at random, rather than forming a perfect sphere around the shell at its center.

With that you withdraw from your trance. You feel fine, which you suppose is the important thing. Rising to your feet, you wonder how you ought to spent your last day in El-Amin.
