Thread LIV:
Yes I know, three weeks is way too long between threads. I'll try and make up for it. Apologies just the same.

Story Thus Far: http://pastebin.com/g1gAVmGb

Artyom is sure taking his sweet time inside that armory. Sitting outside here is proving to be more than a little unsettling. If only because the crowd of onlooker has doubled in size now that you've stopped. Still giving you wide berth the townsfolk with nothing immediate to do appear content to stare at you and yours. Marie seems to be of special interest, though you see the more skittish members recoil or flinch whenever any one of you makes a movement. You just hope they continue to view you as a curiosity, and not a threat. If the centaurs assigned as your chaperons for this little excursion feel the same way, it is not readily evident.

In any case, you're stuck at an impasse. Lord Bralin seemed to need help with something, that was for sure, but he apparently thought better of asking a group of foreigners to help. He seemed sure that the Kozaks have a better read on the situation though. Veles might have gleaned something off that advisor as well, though it might not be best to discuss that here. You also note that Marie's been quieter than usual since meeting the advisor. You find yourself wondering what to do next.

Not anymore.
Pretty much.

This is 500 years after Lamia Daughter Quest, most monster have been integrated into society fairly well. We're on a different continent atm dealing with centaurs who have never seen other races.

Something like that. Satellite is hot garbage when it comes to little squalls that appear out of nowhere. Days where I would want to run I'd hold off and sure enough I'd get coverage outages for hours at a time.
>>42194782
Most all of that should be covered in the story thus far pastebin. Though if you're looking something touching of integration issues and persecution and all that, its been a good 500 years since that's been taken care of for certain races that is.

"Well, things seem to be a little more complex than I had hoped." You say as shift in place between the two.

"More than a little. I'd say its convoluted at this point." Veles says, heedless of the stares.

"You're awfully calm about this. I mean, if there is a war, it'd be on your doorstep."

"They think we are from the mountains. They have plenty of land to fight over. Insofar as they know, the world consists of this and naught beyond. Where would they flee to?" Veles responds.

You frown, "Well, Artyom and Tatiana know better now."

"Yes, but have they ever seen the ocean?"

"No."

"Exactly, as far as they all know, this is all there is. They will fight to the end to keep what is theirs rather than search for an escape."

"That's pretty dire."

"It is how it was before the line of Sigismund." Veles says with a hint of finality.

"What about you Marie? You've been awfully quiet since we met the lords."

She shakes herself "Huh? What? Oh. Sorry. Thinking about something."

"What is it?"

"Well, you heard what that little elf thing said, right? How it used to be a land spirit or something like that?"

"Yeah?"

"Everything I've read or heard or had told to me about those consisted of them being bad news. If they are prevalent here... Well, they might be hostile, especially given what that one called Veles." She says, trailing off.

"I must have missed it." You say.

"Two faced infiltrator of the arrogant one." Veles says finishing for her. "In not so many words of course, Its... a very old term. I can't say its quite untrue. At least, for most of our kin ages ago."

"Is it something we should be worried about?" You ask the old snake.

"Probably not. I imagine that he was trying to unsettle me using some fragment of ancient knowledge. Unfortunately his missed the mark."

"I'm not sure I understand, could you please explain?"

"It is hard to explain, bear with me. There was a time, longer ago than I care to remember, where the Lamia and the Naga were the conduit through which the dragons controlled their subjects or ambassadors to our enemies. We were raised from birth to be so. Amongst the draconic progeny, we were dubbed the <Beautiful Ones>. Such was our role to play. That term is just the disparaging version."

"So how did he miss the mark if that's true?"

"My sire never bothered to raise me that way. My siblings, yes, but that was not to be my fate. Why? I do not know. Mayhaps it was because I was the only male in the clutch. In any case, what the advisor assumed was in fact not the case." You look at him, waiting for a further explanation only for the old snake to shrug. You're then drawn to the sound of the armory opening.

In the doorway stands Artyom, though he is a far cry from the battered hussar that entered. Gone is the scorched, punctured breastplate, replace with a full set of polished steel armor, complete with visored helmet. You count no less than five blades of various shape and form strapped to the leathers that cover his flanks. Completing the ensemble is a green silken tabard and heraldic accents. You do note that the metal is not decorated like the hussars of Bralin. Nor is it winged.

[Are you sure you're not abusing our hospitality, Artyom?]

He looks as taken aback as you are. [The armorer would not take no for answer. These are pieces that he could not filigree. They are serviceable.]

[And the green silks?]

He doesn't answer.

Veles breaks the awkward silence. [We had best decide what we are to do, now. In any case.]

Chem's either writing, or his internet fucked up.
I will assume the latter if he's not back in an hour.
>>
"I suppose we had best find the Kozaks." You say, "How are we doing by way of supplies?"

"We'd only packed roughly a weeks worth." Marie says, "But if we forage, we'd be able to strech that another week and a half, maybe."

"Hrm, well if they went west like Veles said they would, we'd be heading the same way as home at least part of the way. Maybe see what we can pick up by way of food on the way? In the meantime... I'm eager to see if that offer was just to Artyom."

Judging by the reaction of the centaur inside he doesn't get to ply his craft often. Cycling you in one by one, you let your compatriots pick first. Marie surprises you, having come out with not a blade, but a well made leather satchel. Veles, ever practical, comes out with a skinning knife, saying that he had left in his lair and while his catalyst would do in a pinch, having a specialized tool for the job would be better. After waiting for him to file out of the armory, you enter. The armorer is eager to please, and directs you to the different tables, racks, and shelves of gear.

Three things stand out: The first is a sword, if anything it reminds you of the broadsword McCain lifted off his imposter. Basket hilted, broad, and with an appreciable weight, you heft it and examine the blade. An almost organic pattern appears along the blade, and the armorer informs you that it was something the local blacksmith had been working on.

The second is a full backpack made of the same leather as the one Marie grabbed. It is much larger, and features straps designed to fit around the lower body of a centaur, examining it, you wager that you could make it work similarly with yourself.

The third is a palm dagger. It's a brilliant silver, and it looks to be similar to the kozak rune weapons, only sans the runes.

The armorer makes it clear that Artyom got the lion's share of the hospitality that lord bralin doled out, and he can only afford to offer one item.

>What shall you take, if anything?
>>
>>42198564
Backpack
>>
>>42198564
Backpack, we've got a gun and magic
>>
>>42198564
While the sword would be cool (and possibly magical, thus making it ripe for selling), the backpack would be the more logical option.

>Backpack

Once we leave, go see about getting some extra food (If we have anything we might trade).
>>
>>42198564
Sword, having something for close in work might be nice.
>>
>>42198971
But we can carry loot and food in the backpack! if worse comes to worse, we can tail whip them. (We DO have those poison barbs, after all. I think we can use our claws too, but I'm not sure about that one.)
>>
>>42199037
We have both, and a gun and magic. We also have a knight to hit stuff for us.
>>
>>42198971
We also aren't very strong as far as Lamia go, and aren't trained in it's use. See, you need to connect the blade within a degree of it being perpendicular to what you're cutting in order to properly damage it.
>>
>>42199093
Thank you for the confirmation.
We also have Veles to use as a meat shield if nothing else. (Marie isn't an option.)
>>
While the sword beckons for a closer look, you ultimately opt for the backpack. It's a heavy leather and you wager if you rigged it right you could probably extend your spines without piercing the thing. It takes some doing though, but the armorer politely looks away as you coil over yourself undoing and retying straps to make it more snake friendly. In the end, you end up stuffing your old backpack into the new one for now, if only to get a feel for its weight.

Heading back outside, you find that the curiosity among the locals has passed, and its mostly youths that make up your audience. Ignoring them you make your way through the concourse toward the western gate. You had hoped to check and see what the market prices were for goods, but solving the issues that the centaurs have takes precedent. After all, how are you going to trade cattle for silk if your buyers are more interested in war? You briefly toy with the idea of selling arms, but that'd require a supply, and with the pressures from the pheonix empire, you'd be hard pressed to get them on the cheap anyway.

The guards escort you out with a nod, and you find yourself outside of Bralin. Setting off to the west, you make a good deal of distance between the town and by the time you set up camp, you're deep into the scrubland once more.

You end up pulling first watch, and Veles pulls second. Marie and Artyom turn is as the two of you remain by the small peat fire you set up.

"If we head due west," Veles says, after staring into the fire for some time. "We will likely come across the ruins of Purobka." He nods towards the sleeping hussar. "It might have a bad effect on your survivor there."

"What do you suggest?"

"Sweep north, into the badlands proper. Say we are looking for game."

>Take the long way around.

>Travel through Purobka

You opt to head through the holds lands anyway, if only to save time. You also figure that Artyom could at least pay his respects. The next day you make surprisingly good time, finding what appears to be an old courier path heading in the same direction. You eventually exit out of the scrubland and into the unkempt fields formerly belonging to Purobka. Even now the scrublands are reclaiming what are rightfully theirs. In the distance you see the burnt out hulk of what was Purobka. Artyom halts as it comes into view. Holding for a second before proceeding on, reaction hidden by the hanging visor on his new helm. He's the first to see the people though.

As you approach, he stoops low and motions over towards the gate. From this distance you can see at least a dozen, if not more, figures doing SOMETHING near the ruins. You can't quite make out what they are doing, but even from here you can see the yellow heraldry of House Krasick

Stagecoach can get you anywhere on the UFK side of the mountains relatively quickly, Riverport, Snake's Landing, South Fork. etc. They've got a pretty appreciable road system set up. If you actually want to run your OWN trade missions, you'll have to make a caravan from scratch and run it through the badlands between your pass and the Casimiran lands.

You hear Artyom's huff of rage and quickly pull him back into cover. Dropping low, you slither towards the commotion, leaving Marie and Artyom back in the relative cover of a low patch of ground. Veles snakes around parallel to you, keeping cover between yourselves and the group of centaurs.

From your vantage point, you can just make out the figures of the centaurs shovelling what looks to be remains of something into a small processions of rickshaws. Of the dozen, three appear to be holding off trolls, expertly dispatching them and bodily throwing the dying creatures behind them. Six of the remaining centaurs have formed a bucket train of sorts, hefting the dead trolls towards the wagons. The three remaining centaurs have bows drawn, staring outward towards the field.

"What are they doing?" You mutter to yourself.

<Probably searching for something in the ruins. Don't want to leave fresh dead in their tracks.> Veles replies in the low hiss of Snake Cant

<You think so?>

<Don't see any reason otherwise. They are probably baiting out a hive, thinning the numbers so they can search unmolested.>

<What do you think they are searching for?>

<Maybe the advisor of Purobka? They were absent you said. Mayhaps they went to ground.>

You head back toward the group. [We need to figure out what they are doing. That means getting a hold of at least one.]

[What do you suggest?] Veles asks.

[Maybe we can set their clothes alight? Maybe it'll keep them distracted long enough for us to get the drop on them?]

You can feel the grimace from Artyom from here. [As much as I would like to render unto them what they have done to me. I would much rather engage them properly.]

[They kinda outnumber us three to one.] Marie counters.

[Then I would much rather know what they are doing. Strike them when we have the chance. Not give them a casualty to justify their actions with.] The burned hussar responds.

[You think they'd do that?}

[They are not above attacking while pretending to be a trade caravan. They are not above burning an entire Szlachta Hold to the last peasant. I would not put grasping for an excuse to do it more past them.] He says.

[In any case, get up there. Let us know if you see anything big coming. I want to know if they have cavalry.]

You watch her wing off into the sky, away from both you and the ruined town until she has enough air to do wide orbits. You keep to your position, watching the specks move back and forth as they load more troll carcasses onto their wagons. Abruptly, they halt, and the group begins to move towards the wagons. You watch as the six corpse haulers move to the rickshaws, lifting them up and begining to tow them off. In the front the three hussars, in the rear the three bowmen. Up high, you see marie still orbiting.

[Strange.] Veles murmurs, [They only took the bodies, didn't even enter the ruins proper.]

[We will have to move to keep sight of them. If they catch sight of the little one, a hail of arrows awaits.] Artyom retorts, rising out of cover

[Hold on, there's not a lot of cover between us and them.] You say, placing a hand on his shoulder and pushing him back down.

[We cannot lose the trail.]

Agree with him, we can't lose them... Have Sasha comment about this cutting into profits

[Veles. You and I will follow on either side, using the grasses for cover. If they start to move after one of the two of us, the one not under suspicion should Set the grass near them alight, or cause some other distraction that wouldn't get them caught, and then move away. If they continue to try after the other, then use magic to force their attention away. I don't care how. If it's just one moving in, let them. Try the one they're going after should try to capture them. If it doesn't go so well, then proceed with the rest of the previously mentioned plan.]
[Artyom. You should fallow a bit farther back, and move in to help if fighting starts, or we manage to capture one who's strayed to far away from the others.]

But it's not. . . If we manage to capture one, and get information from them, the other Szlachta Holds will probably pay us. (or label us as enemies.)

[Understood] The old snake says, moving off to one side

You turn to the hussar. [Artyom. You should fallow a bit farther back, and move in to help if fighting starts, or we manage to capture one who's strayed to far away from the others.]

He simply nods.

As you close in on the group, you keep an eye on Marie's progress. It would appear she's run into some difficulties with the local birds, a pair of which are currently haraunging her. Your heart drops into your stomach as she dives right above the Krasick procession, almost buzzing them. You freeze for few seconds as she rights herself, freed of the harassing birds. You raise your rifle to get eyes on the enemy. One surely must have noticed...

Either they are blind, or Krasick horse-men can't look up. Nary a twitch comes from the procession as your harpy does her aerial acrobatics above them.

In any case, you begin to get somewhat worried, as the procession continues to move further and further south, away from where Veles thinks the kozaks might be.

>Pausing here. Crashing hard. Thanks for reading though. I hope you enjoyed it.
