Become The Dragon Quest 5

You are Kotijah, and you want to be a dragon. You have known since your birth that you wanted to be one of them, to be among your ancestors, a true dragon. Instead you have been confined to something less, something lacking the grace, ferocity and raw power that you deserve.

Yesterday you carried Sena to the village with Gil, who helped you figure out where you should take her for treatment. You subsequently parted ways with him, and headed into the village. After smooth talking with the guard a bit you learned about the church in town and their healers, and decided to go there first. You were turned away because it was late at night but you DID learn that Sena was suffering from the blight, and went to the alchemist to see if she could help. Kat, the alchemist, helped get Sena through the night, and you made some deals with her to trade blood for lessons in alchemy, taking a crash course in the basics and agreeing to be her lab rat to pay off her help saving Sena.

When dawn came you went to the church and forked over a gold to pay for her healing. The priestess from the night before, Fiona, took you to the library and you learned that the world operates on a cycle of destruction and rebirth dominated by humanoids on one side and monsters on the other. The Church of the Sun and Moon functions the same way, and you managed to convince Fiona that you are the encroaching night and that she should be ready.
>>
After instilling some fanaticism and learning about martial techniques from a book, you met up with Sena again and took her back to Gil, who you told to get out of town for now. After a quick visit to check on Fiona (who got thrown in a cell for opening the door the night before), you went back to check on Kat, who was as high as a kite on something she made with your blood. A quick threat to withdraw from your agreement with her got her sobered up, and now you're gonna press her for some info.

The rules:
Best of three rolls, critical threat on a 20, confirmed if another roll is 20-modifier or higher. Modifier is Stat being rolled+Relevant skill. You can decide which skill to apply. If no one applies one, no skill will be added on. If you don't have a logical reason to apply a skill, don't do it.
Critical fails are at least two 1s on a roll. May expand this later to increase shenanigans.
Success is on a sliding scale and is situational. Some things are easier than others. Use your head.

“What did you learn about my blood?”

You step over the broken glass and fizzing fluids on the floor and Kat rubs her eyes a bit, forcing herself to stay focused.

“Well, it's not a good ingredient on its own. Too many impurities to be used as human blood or dragon blood. But it's great as a binder for two ingredients that are normally hard to mix. It's like an emulsion. Have you ever made a salad dressing before? Oil and water don't mix, so you need a binder or it'll separate in the container. It's like that.”

You nod slowly. You've never even considered putting something on salad, let alone oil or water. Wouldn't that taste bad? Regardless, you accept the information. It'll be useful if you ever need to get two things to blend in a bottle.

“Alright. Now, about this lab rat thing...”

Kat pulls out three glass bottles. None of them have labels and each of them gives you a bad feeling.

“Take your pick. I need each of these tested, but if you'll take two for me so I can record the results that would be great.”

You pick up the third bottle and examine it for a moment, opening it up. It smells of vanilla and dust, and the liquid inside is a bright red.

“So what are these going to do?”

Kat shrugs and pulls out a notepad.

“Not a clue. Off you go then!”

You sigh, take a sip, and then down the contents when you realize the aftertaste is foul. Better to do it all at once. You cough a little bit, and Kat starts scribbling, and you're no longer paying attention to her. You're more focused on the spiders.

Where did they all come from?

They're everywhere.

And then you realize that they're all coming from the bottle, a torrent of spiders erupting from the container. You try to run, try to escape the flood of biting, crawling creatures, rushing to a corner and readying your claws. When some of them try to jump at you, you manage to knock a few aside but most of them cling to your hand. You're not fast enough to keep them all away. The last sane thought in your head as the swarm overtakes you is that you've decided that all spiders must die.

And then it's over. You're on the floor, shaking, claws digging into your own arms. The pain is dulling whatever the potion was doing to you, and you remember that spiders aren't all that scary as you slowly sit up. Kat is writing furiously, a gleeful smile on her face. You don't know if you were yelling or talking or anything, but you've clearly amused her.

You walk over to the counter and grab the first bottle, giving Kat a wary look. You open it and down it in one go without regard for the contents, but you kind of wish you hadn't. It tasted like chocolate, and you've just discovered you like the taste. You go to ask Kat what the flavor is called, but your mouth refuses to work. Bit by bit your whole body goes numb and rigid, and you're trapped inside your head. The world around you goes dim, then dark, and then you feel the heat around you, fire forming at the edges of your vision. You can hear a familiar voice, and you let the scene unfold. The fire comes together into the form of a dragon, and your ancestor greets you with a grin.

“I see. You didn't sleep last night so I was worried someone had killed you so soon after our bargain. And yet here you are. I see you've been using your firesinging a lot. You should be more careful with it, you'll burn yourself badly. Humans are such fragile things, don't you think?”

“If I kept my tongue still, I'd never be able to master it. And a little pain is worth the power I'm acquiring. I can already make it obey my will to a certain extent, even if it isn't particularly strong yet.”

He nods a bit and breathes out smoke through his nostrils.

“How interesting. You've already done better than many of the others by not burning yourself to a crisp on your first day.”

You pause, and then work up the confidence to grin at him.

“I've done more than that. I've started a cult. I've got a faithful follower already, ready to help me turn a major faith of the human realm into my own personal zealot troupe. With enough time and effort, I think I can get them to worship me once I figure out how to become a full dragon.”

His eyes narrow slightly and he snorts out more smoke.

“Really now...? Interesting. I suppose when that all backfires in your face I'll be making use of this moment. I formally reserve the right to say 'I told you so'. Humans are meaningless and weak. They had to use my own children against me to defeat me. I don't see the point in infiltrating their silly religions. But who knows, perhaps it will bear fruit and I will be the one who must be humble.”

You nod slightly, then pause.

“What do I call you? I tried to find your name in a history book but there were too many dragons leading their own eras.”

He nods and closes his eyes.

“Call me Allegiset for now. It was my birth name, the name I had as a mere child. My ruling name would reveal too much to you now, expose you to secrets you could not comprehend fully, for speaking it out loud would bring down the full might of the curses and blessings upon your blood. You have earned neither.”

“Then what have I earned?”

He opens his eyes and lunges forwards, face inches from yours.

“The Glass City is your first task. When you reach it I will grant you a boon, if you can find the Red Rose of Loti and the White Blade of Schimdi.”

You try to speak, try to say something, but instead you awaken with a start in Kat's shop, in the same pose you were in when you blacked out. She's filled three pages with notes, and as you move you hear the shattering of glass and the sound of things falling to the ground around you.

Kat looks up from her notes, examining the pile of assorted things on the floor.

“Well, I'm not cleaning that one up. I guess that mess can sit there for a while.”

You clear your throat politely, and she pushes her notes aside.

“So, that's it then. Debt repaid. I guess I won't get any more testing out of you?”

You consider the question for a moment.

“I'm going on a long trip up north to the City of Glass. If you came with me, we could negotiate for more samples of my blood, and you could use me as a test subject if you offered me something worth risking my neck for. I want to learn more about alchemy, we could figure out a deal.”

Kat gestures to her shop.

“What, and leave all of this behind? My home, everything I know and love, my entire collection of po- Yeah, fuck this god awful town and its smiling, happy people. I hate it here. Give me five minutes, I'm gonna grab the last of that stuff I made for Gil so I can burn this building to the ground.”

You don't ask questions, you just smile and nod and walk outside. When you get out of the shop you turn to look inside. Kat is practically dancing inside the shop, scattering some kind of liquid everywhere like a little girl sprinkling flower petals. She grabs a pack of some sort from behind the counter, lights a match, and uses it to light some kind of pipe, walking out and chucking the match behind herself. The whole shop catches at once, and Kat takes a pull from her pipe, grinning.

“So, north you say? Where's your ride?”

It takes a good five minutes to explain to Kat that you don't have a wagon, horse, carriage or cart of any description, and she turns towards her burning shop and starts to cry, ears drooping.

“It was going to be so cool! Why can't you have a pony or something!”

You give Kat a firm pat on the shoulder and a reassuring smile.

"I donated to them earlier, it'll be fine."

Kat blinks, then grins mischievously.

"A donation made not for personal gain during daylight hours, right? Score! We can blow this popsicle stand for three gold and get enough food and water to get us to the next town easy! And I can spend some cash on new equipment since I just blew up my old set!"

Kat grabs your arm and starts pulling, and you let her lead you to the stables, where she excitedly tries to shove you through the door, pressing some coins into your hands.

"Ask for a wagon and two horses! And the alchemist kit I put on hold! And supplies!"

The stables, it turns out, also serve as a store for supplies for travelling, as well as some odds and ends. When you tell the man behind the counter Kat's laundry list of items and hand over the coins, he looks you up and down, then nods.

"I can see you're a good soul. The price is lowered for anything you want to purchase."

Kat grabs what she bought through you and runs outside, shouting over her shoulder.

"I'll get everything ready! Grab what you want and let's go!"

You locate a few familiar titles from the library and gather those up as well, setting the pile on the counter. The man examines the gear you've selected and nods to himself, before turning his attention to the books.

“I can't part with those for less than ten gold pieces. They're expensive to make, and even though they're part of the church's charity work, that price covers the materials alone. I could probably lower it to forty since you're getting five of them together. That seems fair, right?”

You hand over the cash and grab the sack, turning and walking out of the shop. You don't want to know what happens to their prices at night, and you're not waiting twelve hours to find out. Outside, Kat is setting up the wagon and grooming the horses. She grins at you.

“I was thinking of naming one Exo and the other Endo. What do you think?”

You think her naming scheme could use some work. You don't tell her that though. Instead you tell her that it's your expedition that she's on, and funding or not, you could have gotten the horses yourself. In fact, she owes you for the difference on that alchemy set she got. You let her know you'll consider it square if you get the wagon and horses for yourself, and she begrudgingly agrees.

Well. Time to name some horses. One is brown all over except for some white spots on its face, and the other is black, almost gray. You give the reins a harder snap and the horses start to move forwards at a gentle walking pace. Progress. You try it again and they quicken a little bit. You're tempted to give the reins a good hard snap to see how fast you can get them going, but you don't know how to stop yet, so you gently pull the reins until they come to a halt. You're pretty sure you can figure steering out along the way. You get the horses moving once again after a little more trial and error, and start the trip out of town. You decide to take things slow and look for Gil and Sena as you travel down the road. Every now and then you stop and start the horses just for practice, and you slowly get the hang of it. The steering is less immediately apparent to you, with the horses moving down the road mostly on their own, but you eventually manage to get them going in whatever direction you want.

Sena and Gil are up in a tree near the road, and you give them a wave. They climb down and run over, and you can already see Sena's eyes light up as she nears the horses. Gil just looks incredulous, and when he spots Kat he turns bright red. Kat waves at the pair, barely registering them as she works. Sena runs to the horses and immediately tries to pet one.

“You got ponies!”

She starts to stroke Ro's neck and face, and Ro just stands there letting it happen. Gil moves to inspect Oro.

“Yep, she sure did. I'm not going to pretend to know how or why, and I'll just try to roll with it.”

He pets Oro gently, and Oro turns and almost takes off his fingers with a bite. Gil falls backwards with a yell of surprise, and Sena giggles.

“Gil, you always have bad luck with animals, ever since-”

Gil immediately leaps to his feet and rushes to Sena, covering her mouth with a hand.

“We don't talk about that!”

Kat looks over at Gil and grins.

“What, that time I turned into a cat because you mixed up the wine at our romantic dinner date with a potion bottle I made for you? And how for a week straight I kept making jokes about you getting pussy for dessert? Is that what we don't talk about?”

Gil turns bright red and climbs onto the cart.

“Let's just go...”

Sena climbs up next to you, and then carefully shimmies her way onto Ro's back.

“Yep, let's go!”

You give the reins a little snap, careful not to hit Sena, and the horses start up again. The sun has almost completely set, and you'll need to make camp soon.

It takes until the sun has completely set before you find a suitable place to camp. There's a large stone beside the road with a few trees nearby, the perfect place to set up your tent and have it well supported and protected at the sides. Anything coming to you will have to go for the openings, where you can at least see it. The river isn't too far away so you can get water for drinking, cooking and bathing, and you've got food for your group to reach the next town easily enough. You tie the horses up by the tree and give them enough room to graze and start unpacking.

You opt to take Sena aside for a few quick words before everyone turns in. You lead her a little ways away from the tent, just enough that you can talk in peace.

“I wanted to make sure that you were alright.”

You sit down, and Sena kneels down beside you, nodding slightly.

“I am...”

She fidgets, playing with her hands a bit. There's not a trace of the scars anymore, and she seems fascinated by it. Slowly she lifts her gaze to look at you.

“Thank you. For... For getting me to the church and making sure I was alright... If you hadn't been there, I would have... Thank you...”

She hugs you tightly, releasing you before you can return the favor, and she smiles brightly. Not the same smile you always saw on her before. This one is warm and genuine.

“We should get some sleep, and I don't want to leave Gil and Kat alone or we won't be able to get back into the tent...”

You nod and stand up, helping Sena to her feet and walking back over to the tent. True to Sena's word, Kat is getting cozy with Gil, who is making minimal effort to pry her off and blushing, turning scarlet when you walk in.

“She won't leave me alone!”

Kat squeezes Gil a bit.

“I'm sleepy for the first time in ages, let me have this.”

You chuckle and head for your bedroll. They can sort out their own antics, it's time for some rest.

“Sena, you take first watch, alright? Wake me for the second, Gil can be third and Kat can take fourth.”

Sena gives you a mock salute and takes out her knife, moving to the tent entrance and taking out a carving to work on. Your eyes slide shut, and you relax into sleep. Warmth surrounds you, but there's no sign of your ancestor in your dreams, and you have your first truly peaceful night of sleep.

You're woken up in the night by Sena, who makes her way to her own bedroll and passes out while you're dragging yourself from sleep. Gil is wide awake, staring at the roof of the tent with Kat curled up on top of him. He doesn't look particularly comfortable like that. You move to the entrance to the tent and get comfortable, looking out at the night. It's peaceful and calm, and you hope it stays that way. While you keep watch you contemplate what you need to do next.

The City of Glass is where you want to go next, but that's no longer your main objective. Your ancestor has given you a task to complete, and you strongly suspect that if you do it then you'll be receiving even more power. You still need to reach the city to start researching what those things are and where you'll find them, but it's progress. When you left the farm you didn't have a clue where you were supposed to be going or what you were supposed to do to become a dragon, but in a few short days you've learned so much about so many things, and found what may be the key to your eventual ascension. You feel pretty proud of that last part, actually. Your ancestor called you “daughter”, and that makes you smile.

Gil grumbles a little bit as Kat shifts on top of him, and he looks your way pleadingly. You don't know if he's expecting you to push her off of him or not, but Kat looks perfectly content where she is right now.

You give Gil a shrug and a smile, and he groans and closes his eyes, mumbling something about unhelpful dragons. You turn your attention back to the night outside, but nothing happens that you can see. Your shift passes uneventfully, and you head over to Gil to push Kat off of him gently. She sits up and yawns a bit, and Gil immediately makes a break for the entrance. As you head to bed, Kat wanders over to Sena and attempts to use her as a pillow instead. You see a flash of something shiny in the air between them, and Kat stops, turns around, and goes back to her own bed.

Good work, Sena.

You rest peacefully through what remains of the night, and wake up to the smell of someone cooking something. At least, you hope it's cooking. An awful lot of smoke though. You sit up to find Kat by the entrance to the tent making use of your new cooking pot to prepare something while smoking her pipe. Gil looks like he's finally getting some sleep, too. Sena is nowhere to be seen for the moment, though she's probably by the horses or off by the river or something.

You decide to take care of your sword and armor, and then head off to the river to bathe. If you don't see Sena by then, you'll go looking You grab your gear and take it outside, sitting by Kat and polishing your armor. She regards you with mild interest, occasionally stirring the pot.

“So, the open road, huh? Is this what it's going to be like? Camping, lots of riding around in a cart, watching you polish things and occasionally sleeping on top of Gil?”

You give her a slight nod while you try to smooth out a scratch with your polishing rag.

“I see. Well, in that case count me in. I've already found a few decent things to work with out here in the field, and we're only a few hours from town.”

You switch to the next piece of armor, and Kat peers into the pot.

“There's stew in here. I'm not really a breakfast person, so I just made a big pot of food that we can eat over the course of the day. It just made more sense to me like that.”

A quick glance of your own confirms it, and it smells like she used some of your venison, as well as some of the vegetables from the barrel. Which is to say that it smells wonderful.

“Thanks. You didn't have to cook for everyone, but I'm glad you did.”

Kat rolls her eyes.

“Please. You're clearly the leader of our merry band, Gil can't cook and Sena is... She can cook, but let's be serious here, you can't really pin her down for any given task unless she's really motivated. She's still too much of a kid to sit around tending to camp.”

You put the finishing touches on your armor and switch to your sword.

“So you're the only logical choice then?”

Kat nods and smiles.

“I don't mind. Cooking is culinary alchemy.”

You finish up your polishing work and head into the tent to grab your old clothes. Your farm attire is rapidly turning into your towel and wash cloth now that you have sturdier traveling gear, and you head off to wash up.

As you head for the river, you notice something out of the corner of your eye. You think you see Sena, but when you turn to get a better look, she's gone. You decide it's nothing and proceed to the river to wash up. If it was Sena, she was probably on her way to camp and didn't see you anyway. You wash up and give your clothes a thorough scrub down before relaxing for a little bit by the side of the river to dry off, wringing out your wet clothes and putting them back on.

Finally you head back to camp, sitting by the cooking fire so your clothes will dry faster and grabbing a bowl of stew from Kat. You try to ignore the fact that Kat is watching you eat with her notebook out like she's ready to take notes. It tastes as good as it smells, and you don't notice anything strange happening. It's then that you notice Sena returning to camp, dragging several large sticks behind herself and panting softly.

“Hi... everyone... I just... saw this, and... I had an idea about... something I could carve...”

You help Sena drag it closer to the cart, and she smiles at you.

You turn to Kat and, waiting for Sena to get into earshot, ask her about the Red Rose of Loti and White Blade of Schimdi. Kat gives you a perplexed look for a moment before taking a pull from her pipe.

“It's part of an old fairy tale. I don't remember most of it though. Why do you ask?”

Sena pulls over a long branch and starts to wear the end down with her knife.

“Gil used to tell it to me when I was little. It's a story about Loti, a princess, and Schimdi, a wandering warrior. Schimdi used to have a sword made of pure starlight, and he used it to fight all kinds of monsters! Loti had a magic red rose that she carried with her everywhere, and even though it was the most beautiful flower in all the land and she never wanted to let it go, every night it turned her into the worst monster of all! Schimdi had to fight Loti, and saved her by stealing the rose. The sword kept him from becoming a monster, and he hid them both away from the world forever.”

Kat raises an eyebrow and then shakes her head.

“That's not how I remember it at all... The rose wasn't beautiful, it was awful. It poisoned Loti's mind and made her think it was beautiful so that she wouldn't want to get rid of it. And Schimdi wasn't a wanderer, he was a royal knight who was cast into exile after killing the princess by mistake.”

You thank them both for their stories and draw your sword, letting them know you're going to practice for a bit and think over what they said. You head away from the camp a little bit and start swinging. When you fought the wolves you felt your feet slip and even though you managed to defend yourself pretty well, it was sloppy. You focus on keeping a good stance with each swing, and pretty soon it starts paying off. Everything else feels like it slips naturally into place so long as you maintain your footwork.

You decide to try using your firesong and experiment a bit. You've made fire, used it to seal wounds and provide comfort. Now to see if it has a combat application at this stage. You start to sing, a single, clear note, and a single, powerful syllable. Your voice strains a bit to support it, but as you finish fire erupts from your mouth and bathes your sword from tip to hilt. You're pretty sure that the polishing oil isn't that flammable, and a few swings through the air reveals that the fire isn't dying down or even flickering. The longer you let it burn, the more your throat stings, and you try to dismiss it before you hurt yourself.

Kat raises her hand.

“Can I just stand in the middle and throw bottles at things? Not empty ones, but bottles of acid or something?”

You nod.

“That's a perfectly acceptable combat tactic, so long as you can spare the glass.”

Kat rolls her eyes.

“I can make bottles with dirt and some alchemical glue if need be. It just needs to be a sealed container, not a work of art.”

Well, can't argue with that.

“Alright, and Sena, you're gonna have a staff, right? So you can stand behind me and use your reach to attack things.”

Sena nods, brandishing her incomplete weapon.

“Yep!”

You nod and head for the road, gathering everyone together into formation. You march back and forth down the road a bit, focusing on keeping watch on every side, turning and reversing formation, and even a fighting retreat. You find yourself getting the hang of getting people to follow your orders, and now your whole team can fight as a cohesive unit. Mostly.

You direct your gang back to the cart and set about packing up, asking people what they plan to do when they get to the city. Kat chimes in first.

“The City of Glass is supposed to be home to one of the greatest continuous alchemical reactions in existence! There's a chemical there that keeps changing back and forth between three states, and will continue to do so as long as it remains on the golden plate it began on.”

Gil shrugs slightly.

“I'm a wanted man in the village, but when we get to the city it'll be different. They won't have a warrant for my arrest, I think, so I'll try to join a carpenter's guild or something. Don't get me wrong, this is nice and all, but I don't think life on the road suits me.”

Sena smiles softly as she rolls up one of the bedrolls.

“Well, if Gil is staying in the city then so will I. For now at least. Someone has to keep him out of trouble. But who knows, maybe I'll stick around. I'm kinda... having fun with all this.”

You finish packing up and load everything into the cart, before asking Kat if she knows anything about the road ahead. She gives you a nod as she settles in with her kit and chemicals.

“There are three more towns along the way, and a few weeks of traveling before we get to the city proper. We could try to cut across country but the cart might not make it intact. If it were sturdier or we had enough horses for each of us and our supplies, we could make it there in two weeks.”

You head off down the road as planned, opting for the sure path rather than risking ruining your cart on the way. Kat tells you that it's going to be about five days until you reach the next town, which gives you enough time to focus on a few skills to practice. Alright, unless there are any objections we're gonna do the next five days of travel with the help of some rolling. Travel isn't fun or interesting when it's just five days of routine, but there are dangers on the road to consider, random events you might stumble across.

Training I won't make you roll for, since you're at less than 2 on those skills, but when you get a mentor or something you'll need to roll to see how much you manage to learn from them, as well as when you try to train a skill beyond 2. We'll see if that system works out as time goes on.

So! We're going to need some Encounter rolls, some Event rolls and some Luck roll. We'll take it a day at a time in case whatever pops up makes you change course or need to slow down or something. Is everyone alright with that?

>>
>>42246782

>>
>>42246782
High is good. Luck influences the situations of the Event and Encounter. A rough encounter with a high luck roll means that even though your enemies are tough, you've got some sort of advantage. A low luck roll means that you find yourself in a bad spot. It's just not your day.
>>
Your first day goes smoothly enough, and you break for lunch around noon. While you're sitting around eating, Gil notices something down the road. You can see more of those wolves in the distance, approaching fast. These ones look fresher and cleaner, and you realize with a note of panic that nobody remembered to grab their weapons when you left the cart to have lunch.

Crap.

Plus, now you get to put all your new skills to use head on. There are three wolves, and you don't have much time to do anything but bark some orders before they're on you. You brace yourself, assume your stance, and yell.

Fresher, sure. Stronger you're not so sure about, especially when you move to strike the wolf and hear its leg snap from the force it puts into trying to jump at you. It tumbles off balance and you sink your claws into its side, ripping all the way towards the back and downing it in one strike. The other wolves move to attack you while Kat, Gil and Sena provide covering fire. You see the vial fall short and burst into flames that the intended target easily avoids, and one of the arrows goes wide, but the second one hits its mark right in the head, and you can hear Sena let out a triumphant shout.

-

Time for those defense rolls. Two wolves are attacking you, so we need defense against them both. Will you block, parry or dodge the first wolf?
>>
Rolled 10, 13 = 23 (2d20)

Dodge the first wolf, catch the second wolf, skullcrush/neck snap.

>>
Rolled 4, 9 = 13 (2d20)

>>42247420

>>
You successfully manage to dodge the first wolf, and you parry the second one with ease, deflecting it aside and sending it tumbling towards the cart. Now your allies will have an easier time smacking it around, and you've got the other one all to yourself.

You rush at the wold and slip a little bit, forgetting your stance for a moment and regretting it. It's not the vital blow you were hoping for, but you can tell you did some serious harm regardless. Behind you you can hear more cheering from Sena, as well as Gil this time. Kat is yelling something about stupid dogs not holding still, and a quick glance tells you that their wolf is almost down too, though it seems more interested in you than in them.

You block the first wolf with your wrist armor and it latches on, trying to bite through the metal. It's the same story with the other wolf, and now you've gotten yourself pinned with your arms trapped in their mouths. If only you had a shield or your sword...

Still, no sense worrying about that now. You could hope your friends finish the job off, or try to finish the job with your arms tied. You could probably free yourself with some effort, or maybe kick them? No time to think!

You decide that the best plan is to simply hit one with the other. You brace yourself, leaning slightly towards one wolf before starting to lift and twist your arm. It takes more effort than you thought it would, but you manage to lodge its teeth into your armor so they won't come out, and you lift it into the air slightly. One part down, now for the other. You shift your weight again, looking at the other wolf, before giving your friends a wink. You let out a feral yell and swing your arm and the raised wolf at the other one. The result is pretty gross, with the wolves exploding into viscera and gore from the force of impact, falling apart the moment whatever was animating them loses its hold.

-

You've successfully fended off the wolves!

Feature unlocked
Defeating enemies earns you experience points, which you can use to augment your stats or get extra wounds. Each enemy is worth at least 1 experience point, often more for tougher enemies. You level up at 5+(current level*5) experience. So 10, 15, 20, etc. Each level will net you a stat point or a wound. You can't increase the same stat twice in a row, and your highest stat can't be greater than your lowest stat by more than 4. To get a stat to 5, you'll need everything else to at least be 1. You've currently earned 7 experience, 3 from this fight, 2 from the other wolves and 2 from the mercenaries you beat up before. Like every rule this may be subject to change as the system develops and becomes more complex.

Now for your event.

-

You pack up your lunch and finish it on the road, checking over your armor and restocking on arrows and flasks while taking turns at the reins. There's a split in the road ahead and, not knowing which way leads to town, you decide to risk it and go left. It's not long before you hit a dead end and a small cabin of some sort.

You don't know what fear is, you just know you smell it on your enemies when you smash them into each other. You enter the cabin. It's dark inside, and a little musty. The place must have been abandoned or something. It's not in terrible shape, but it definitely needs some work to be liveable. The thing that most interests you are the things on the shelves though. Books. Many are falling apart or their ink is fading, but you could try to salvage them if you took your time with it. And if nothing else, you've found an actual building that you can make use of. You should probably find out who actually owns the land before you do anything substantial with it.

-

And that's the last post for the evening. I'm gonna hit the hay, I have to be up early tomorrow. Post your suggestions about what to use the cabin for, if anything at all, as well as anything else you want to do, and tomorrow morning I'll make another post. Until next time!

Investigate + smarts (or luck) roll. There could be a trapdoor in the trapdoor.

You descend the ladder to the basement and start looking around. As your eyes adjust to the light you start to make out the shapes around you. Jars, and lots of them. You grab one and sniff. Peaches. You hold it closer to the light and spot a label indicating that it's jam. Another jar contains pickled onions. Some of the jars have been smashed open, and some have rotted from being improperly sealed, but most of them look alright.

As you continue to explore, you spy a small black object on the ground. It looks like a notebook of some sort, and there's a faint odor of blood.

You grab the book and a jar, heading back up to your group. You pass the jar to Kat for inspecting and open the book to read it. Some of the pages are stained red, but the words are still legible. The book is a record of someone stuck in the basement hiding from thieves, slowly starving because half of the jars won't open. The last entry is him stating that he has no choice but to smash one and hope no one hears. Seems like someone did.

Kat opens the jar and gives the contents a taste, smiling and offering it to Sena.

"Not the best jam I've ever had, but it's pretty good stuff."

Although I agree with you, friendly reminder to everyone here that 'making zealots' will likely be harder than it was. We need to be able to back up whatever we say, and whatever we need to say needs to be hella convincing-sounding. We're basically trying for apotheosis, so we need something worthy of it.
>>
You decide to scavange what you can and move on, making a note of where this place is in case you need it later. You gather up the discarded books and work on loading as many jars as you can onto the cart. After about half an hour you've about doubled your food supply, assuming it's all still good. You'll have to check the seals.

It'll take two days for Kat to restore a book if she does nothing else, but she won't be able to do her research while she does that. There are five books that were intact enough for her to work with.

Kat is working on whatever catches her interest at the time. At present she's working on refinement processes to make the most of new ingredients she encounters, as well as sampling whatever she can get her hands on.

The books don't have legible covers. Three of them appear to be journals of some kind, one seems to be about magical theorems and formulas, and the last one is some sort of reference guide, with text referring to magical auras. So probably a field guide to identifying different types of magic.
>>
>>42254538
The formula book might be of interest.

You decide to have Kat work on the formula book to see if it's of any use to you. She agrees and gets to work with a smile, leaving you with Gil to swap out in the driver's seat while Sena works on her staff. The rest of the day's ride is uneventful, and you spend the evening working on archery with Gil, with Sena working on her skills as well.
