Autumn. A time of colorful leaves, traditions, and the beginning of the end of yet another year. Snow would soon enough start to fall to beacon the start of a new year, new opportunities, and new chances. Maybe even a fresh start?

However, you won't greet the new year with your family and friends. No, you've planned th to leave this town for as long as you can remember and finally it's about to happen.

"Oak!" a female voice beacons for your attention just as you leave the threshold of your warm home.

"Yes, mother?" You groan, throwing your head back at the woman standing at the wide open wooden door.

"I need you to get me some bread and cheese from the market before you leave. Could you do that for me, sweetie?" She tilts her head at you like she always does.

"Fine. I was heading there anyway. Need to see Remny." You start to back away, as if to tell her you're in a hurry.

"You and that blacksmith." She shakes her head and smiles warmly, "Remember to visit your Uncle before you leave. He said he wanted to talk with you."

"Gotcha!" and with those parting words, you take off down the cobblestone road heading further into town. You had plans to not only see the Blacksmith, but also your...

Your sister is the next person on your list of people to meet and say good bye to before you take off. It's been 13 years since she was born and it's both been hell and heaven with her. You had 4 good years before she was born, but you hardly remember any of them. Nonetheless, now when it's finally time to say good bye, you can't help but only remember the good times between you two. That time when you showed her how to milk a cow and you had no idea how to do it, but succeeded anyway. The time you both found a cave by the beach and the shiny sea-scales inside that brightened the entire interior like colorful candle light. The memory of you holding her when she was nothing but a babe is the only thing you can recall from those early days.

Shaking your head, you get back on track. The cobblestone road from your house runs through the entire town, sneaking and crossing past all the houses. The only locations where the cobblestones were not a narrow road were just outside the Church, at the Market and at the entrance. The short wall to keep out critters and beasts still surrounded the town.

You reach the market in no time and it's buzzing with life as always. There's shops, carts, and stands where everything was sold. Shoes, clothes, food, work equipment etc. There was even a store for weapons and armor, although just a small cart handled by a traveling merchant that came through town from time to time. He never really sold much except when some guardsman had saved enough coin to buy himself a replacement weapon to show off to his comrades.

Your sights was set on the Blacksmith. You still remember what weapon you had requested of him 6 months ago. You'll trade it for the favor he owes you after you collected all the ore you could find inside the beach cave a year ago for him. A...

Your Uncle was the one to recommend the Bastard sword when you told him your plans. Apparently he's had experience with swords before, something he had neglected to tell you until then. Your uncle's mysterious past aside, Remny had promised to have the sword ready for you by the time you were ready to leave. Since your name's day was yesterday, the day was finally here.

You caught yourself knocking on his door at first, but then realized that he was probably down by the forge a few clicks away. Just as you suspected, you found Remny by the forge, hammering away at a red hot metal piece. He dipped it in the bucket of water when you approached him. You shared a nod and then a quiet moment. He was waiting for you to tell him what you wanted and you were caught up in observing what he was doing. In the end, he cleared his throat which caught your shaky attention.

"Did ya' want somethin', lad?" His question came in a usual slur. Remny was halfway to getting drunk. He had confined in you with his little secret when you were 12. He told everyone he drank because he lost his wife, but the real reason was that he could only enjoy blacksmithing these days while he was drunk. You couldn't blame him either. Standing in the same place for hours out in the hot sun would make you insane.

"Oh right. Do you have my sword?" You shift towards him, gazing at him with a curious look.

"Gah! Sorry lad. I've been swamped with muh orders from the nearby city, ya' see? Haven't had the time to fix ya' sword yet."

Your eyes narrow at his words, but you choose to stay calm. You're still not sure if he's joking or if he's dead serious with you. That's always been one of the problems with Remny; you never really knew when he was joking or if he was serious, especially around people he cared about. You never figured out if it's just because he sucks at joking or if he's just one of those people.

"When can I get it?" your voice is neutral, but the undertone is ice cold. Remny catches onto it, but only smiles at you. He turns his back to you and pulls something out from behind the nearby woodwork. As he turns back, you spot the bastard sword sheathed in its scabbard. It's a fairly long one, with a big enough grip to hold it with two hands, but light enough to wield it as a one-handed weapon. Its hilt black and the triangle formed pommel looks silver, but you know that would have been too pricey in exchange for a favor, even for Remny. It's perfect in your eyes.

"Ya' didn't think I forgot ya', did ya'? I always honor old favors and dues, wee lad." He laughs heartily as he hands the sword over to you. It feels heavy at first, but after a few minutes it'll feel easy and light. You still had to find someone to teach you how to wield and fight with it properly. Someone in the city.

"Thanks, Remny! I appreciate it." He opens his arms to hug you, but you opt to shake his hand instead. Feels more adult and it's about time you acted more like one.

"Any time, kiddo. Tell ya' sistah I said hi before ya' leave."

You sway those heinous thoughts aside right before you nod at a shield lying a few meters away from where Remny is working. It's hard wooden with iron encasing the outer edges of it. Looks both cheap and of good quality at the same time. It's definitely a work of Remny's, that's for sure. It caught your attention anyway.

"How much for the shield? Could use one to this sword" You gesture towards the sword where it hangs sheathed in its scabbard on your back by a leather belt around your upper body. Remny throws a glance over at the shield and chuckles loudly, smiling back at you.

"For you? 45 copper coins, kiddo." You've grown used to him calling you a kid, but it never fails to paint a sour face on you, albeit only for a second before you reclaim your calm exterior. You pull out the copper coins from your purse in a fistful and hands them over to Remny. He doesn't even bother to count them and hands you the shield. You strap it onto your...

However, before you can depart, Remny stops you with a hand on your shoulder, shifting you back to him.

"Be careful out there, wee lad. There be walls and guards in this town for a reason, and it ain't for 'em bandits skulking out in the woods in broad daylight. It's for whatever creatures comes out at when the sun is dead in the horizon." You nod at him solemnly and he jokingly shoves you off back onto the road leading into the heart of the town again. You wave good bye to him in silence before departing back towards the market.

With the shield firmly strapped onto your right arm and your new bastard sword hanging onto your back, you're more than ready to face the outside world. You might not have much in the way of body protection, but you're sure your shield will protect it until you get enough coin to buy actual armor pieces. For now, you still have several things to do before you can leave town; visit your sister, buy food for yourself and the share your mother gave you coins for and also speaking with Uncle. Not as much the usual agenda for one day, but you need to save daylight as well. Remny is right when he said it's not safe to journey outside the protection of walls and guards at night. It's suicide to say the least.

You passed through the market, set on visiting your sister first of all. After following the cobblestone road through a couple of blocks of houses, you finally reach the open area just outside the small town's church. Your sister,...

You haven't been to church in years after you finished your lectures on how to write and read. Religion was never your thing, even if you say prayers at the dinner table with your family and respect the gods traditions. You were raised as such anyway.

After a moment's searching, you find the little secluded area where at least 15 children are all gathered around the priest where he sits on a chair while reading a book to them. That's what he always does at the end of each session with the kids. This time it's the tale about the Red wandering girl and the black wolf. An exciting tale for a child.

No point interrupting the story time when the Priest is soon done anyway. In the meantime you decide to walk along the bookshelves lined against the nearby wall. You recognize most of the titles, but some of them elude you still. There are old books and maps about world geography, scrolls on all kinds of things ranging from gardening to warfare and there's even a book on astronomy. It's not as big as other libraries that you've heard about from your Uncle, but these books are here and the ones in the other libraries are elsewhere or made up. You're not sure how much of what your Uncle has told you over the years are true or false anymore.

One book catches your attention especially; "Monsters and You 101." - It looks like an old tome that's barely been touched, but since you're going to go outside, it might be worth a read. However, before you can pull it out you hear that story time is over and the kids are cheering and applauding. Now's the time to decide what to do.

>Steal it. The book hasn't been touched in forever. No one will know it's gone.

You decide it's worth asking anyway. After pulling the book out from the bookshelf, a couple of children run past you. Amelia is still speaking with the Priest when you approach them both. Once she spots you she immediately forgets about the Priest and launches herself into your arms.

"Brother!" She cheers, hugging you tight. You hug her back, holding her in your arms.

"How was the story?" You ask, kissing her forehead. Her smile is beaming and her eyes are filled with laughter. Her short, auburn hair is starting to grow longer and longer. You like to keep your own hair short. It's a pain to cut it, but it's worth it.

"It was good. I cheered for the wolf, but it lost." She replies, faking a sad frown before giggling. Your sister has always been fascinated by creatures and the dark beings that creep out at night. She's scared of the howls at night, but fear hasn't stopped her interest so far, both for good and worse.

"Good." You sigh, handing over the book in your hand to Amelia to free your own to shake the Priest's hand after he approached you both. He seems in a good mood, even though he doesn't smile. Amelia immediately starts to read the book, but she doesn't get far. After the pleasantries, you ask him if you could have the book Amelia is holding. You'll need to know what's out there if you ever have to travel in the dark of night. He's hesitant at first, but after Amelia shows him her puppy eyes, his resistance is broken and you've won the day!

"Thanks for the support back there" Amelia lights up at your praise once you leave the church together, hand in hand.

The journey back to the market is a short one and picking out both the hard cheese and the bread for your mother and food for yourself came evidently hand in hand. No point wasting more daylight than necessary. You still have a long way to go before you reach the city. Luckily you know from your Uncle that there's an Inn on the road in-between, so you won't have to traverse through the woods at night.

Once you and your sister came back home, your Mother was waiting for you both. She helped you pack down your food and gave you 30 extra copper coins for the road.

"Are you sure this is what you want, sweetie?" She asked you while hugging her son tightly. You couldn't help but sigh and nod in her embrace.

"Yes, mother. I've been wanting this my entire life. I want to see the world outside the town halls. I want to explore and discover the unknown outside." You catch yourself getting overly excited and try to regain your composure, but your mother and sister are already giggling at you. Your sister is the next one to hug you and kiss you farewell.

"When you get back, I'll be all grown up so I can come along." She exclaims, holding out her pinky, "Pinky swear?" To which you intertwine your pinky with hers.

"Pinky swear."

After a sort of tearful good bye with your family, you set off to see your Uncle. He lives in a secluded area close to the beach. Most of the houses down there have either been abandoned or destroyed during heavy storms. Your uncle's house has weathered both the storms and your uncle's stubbornness for many years. In a weird way, you have a great respect for that old house.

"Come in!" You hear him yell before you can even knock on the door. Nothing wrong with his hearing anyway. You excuse yourself and enter his home. It's very dirty, with bottles lying scattered around the floor here and there. A rat runs across the room and into a nearby hole. There's a half-eaten piece of bread on the table in the kitchen that's filled with mold. You find your Uncle in his chair on his porch overlooking the beach and the sea.

"All this water makes you wish you had a boat." He greets you with the same sentence as every other time you come to visit him. He's bald and he has a thick, gray beard. His left eye is gone and there's a nasty deep scar running from his forehead down through his missing left eye socket that ends by his cheek. You asked about it once and he got silent. Wouldn't speak to you for a whole week. You've never brought it up again and never plan to either.

"Then build one, old man." You reply with an answer that you've started to give him for the past two years now. He always chuckles at it, but not today. He seems more serious, if that's even possible.

You sit down in the chair next to him. He usually makes you stand when he talks to you, but this time it's different. Is it because you're leaving? Probably.

"Mother told me you wanted to speak with me."

"Yes, yes, I do." He grumbles to himself, throwing a glance over at you as if to make sure you're either paying attention or if you're still here. "Which road will you be taking?"

"The western one. There's an Inn between here and the city that I can rent a room at for the night. Like you told me." You explain, confused as to why he would ask you when he's the one who suggested that road. You've been planning this for a while now and your Uncle has helped you immensely, even if you can sometimes be too proud to admit it. Maybe he's just making sure you still remember.

"Good. Good." You're now starting to notice the nervous tone in his voice and his twitching hands.

"Are you alright, Uncle?" You ask out of concern, but he ignores your question.

"I need you to take my journal with you. It's in my cabinet by the bed upstairs. I need you to take it to a friend of mine in the City." Your Uncle explains, motioning inside his house. "It's important that you get it to--" He starts off, but is cut short when you hear an ear-shattering scream from further into town, towards the market. Your instincts sends you flying off the chair and running straight through your Uncles house, out into the street and forward towards the scream that's still wailing. As you get closer, you start to hear more screams and you smell fire and smoke in the air. A house must have caught on fire! However, when you reach the market, you're greeted by a most horrible scene.

Death. The cracks between the cobblestones are filled with blood and the entire market is littered with human bodies of towns people. The clouds have gathered above and their dark and ominous. A red lighting strikes in the far distance. How could this have happened?! Is it bandits? No, they wouldn't be so cruel. Is it the creatures, but it's not even dusk yet?
However, aside from all the death and gore around you, something else catches your attention. A dark, furry creature is hulking over one of the bodies, possibly eating out of its guts, ripping apart bones and muscles in its way.

You're frozen in place and not sure what to do right now!

There's no doubt in your mind before you sprint off through the street littered with bodies, both intact ones and those torn apart by these creatures. You need to see if Mother and your sister are alright! You pass by several houses on fire. You catch glimpses of men, women, and children who are on their knees beside their parents, siblings or loved ones, crying and screaming for help. You can't help them. It's far too late for that now! You need to make sure your family is safe! Uncle can take care of himself, you're sure of it. You've always been sure of that.

The sight of a woman running out from her house, set ablaze only to be pounced by two of those furry, dark creatures is almost enough to make you puke in fear, but you press on. The only thing driving you forward is the thought of your family. However, when you finally reach the street where your house is, you spot it where it lies, crumbled into a burning pile of wood and stone.

You're close to losing it again.

You hold onto what little hope you can think of. They're not dead! You won't allow that! They could either have fled Town for the Inn down the road a couple of hours, or they could have taken a different street down to your Uncle or holed themselves up in the Church, the one and only fortified place in this town.

You contemplate searching the burning pile, but you'd rather not find them amidst that burning pyre...

>Never mind.
The church! Of course they must have gone to the church! It rarely happens, but there's always a drill or two once per year when everyone in town, who wants to, evacuates and lives inside the church for one day for situations like these. Maybe not exactly like this one, but in a dangerous one nonetheless. Your feet carry you back the way you came, but you shift into another street when you start to approach the area where the two wolf-like creatures were feeding on that burning woman. You'd wish to avoid both the sight and those creatures if you possibly could. You got a sword and a shield, but would they even work against such beings?

"Anything and anyone can be killed, boy. A king's blood is just as red as a commoners and the same goes for those disgusting creatures. You just have to know how to kill 'em." The memory and the voice of your Uncle rang in your head, but you didn't have the time to process nor think about it right now. Lives were at stake!

Just as you turn a street corner to rush into the open area, someone grabs you by your back collar and pulls you into the shadows before you step out into the light. You're just about to slam your shield into whomever it is, when they push you against the nearby house wall, rendering any actions moot.

"Shut your tramp, boy. If you step out into the open now, they'll pounce you within seconds." Your Uncle whispers to you, his breath stinks with something that you can't quite figure out. Your Uncle never drank a lick of liquor as far as you know, but the smell is just as strong as booze, but not quite the same as Remny's.

"Where's mother and my sister?" You whisper back desperately. Your Uncle releases his grip on you and backs away. When you turn around you notice his reinforced leather pieces studded with steel and his chain mail along with the Claymore in his hand that's covered in odd runes and symbols.

"They're inside the church. Saw 'em enter it before any creature got inside, but it's just a matter of time befor--" Your Uncle starts explaining, but his voice trails off at the sudden sound of heavy footsteps echoing nearby followed by loud grunting noises.

"Fuckin' hell." Your Uncle curses under his breath right before a large, yellow-ish brown creature with long, black hair slowly walks out from a street and into the open area before the church. It's pulling a large tree trunk behind it. It's slowly making its way towards the church. Before you can take a closer look at its face, your Uncle grabs a hold of you.

"Oak, I need you to listen to me and I need you to listen good." You can see the fear in his eyes and it doesn't bode well. "I need you to take my journal and get to the city. Find Abraham Dayne. Remember that name. Give him my journal and he'll tell you everything. Now go." He seems very frantic at this point, his hands twitching around the hilt of the claymore in his hand.

"I need to save my family." You insist, trying to push your way past your Uncle when you notice that the hulking, large creature has reached the Church and is preparing to break the doors down with the tree trunk. Your Uncle is too strong and pushes you off of him.

"Get it together!" He slaps you, sending you reeling to the ground. "I'll save my sister and my niece, but I need you to do your part too, Oak. Can you do that for me?" And with that, he throws his journal onto your chest where you lie on the street.

You stare at him and he stares at you. Whether or not your gaze is that of deficiency, you sigh in defeat at the end of it, grabbing a hold of the journal. Your Uncle helps you up just in time for you both to hear a roar and a loud banging noise from the Church. The large creature has smashed the tree trunk into the church gates, but they haven't been broken yet. The creature prepares for another swing with its improvised weapon.

"Those gates won't hold for long. Go, Oak. I'll do this on my own." Your Uncle reaffirms you and when you turn about to jog away, you stop for a second and look back. Your Uncle has rushed straight out into the open cobblestone field where several human bodies lay torn about. Suddenly, like a flash, you witness as several of the dark and furry creatures pounce towards your Uncle, but as he moved onwards his sword slices through the air. For the lack of better words, it looks like his lower body is running while his upper body is dancing. The sword cuts through furr, flesh, and bones, turning the pouncing creatures into ash when they're cut into pieces. The fearful howling and painful screams the creature give away will scar your mind and haunt your nightmares until the day you die.

You turn to run just as your Uncle leaps with his Claymore at the ready at the large creature. You've seen enough and you need to get out and get to the Inn before nightfall. You'd guess it's already dusk, but these dark clouds are hiding the sun so it's hard to take a guess. You rush through the Town, jumping over mangled bodies, hiding from the dark creatures that prowl the roofs and ignore any and all calls for help. You can't help them, even if you wish you could.

Eventually you reach the exit and there you find the majority of the guard garrison, or what's left of their bodies. The wall gates have been smashed right open and there's claw marks all along the hard wood. Casting one last glance back at your burning home town, you finally leave it behind. It's not a good bye that you had imagined, but it is one all the same. All you can do now is clutch to the Journal and get to the City in one piece.

>>42248593
Magic is a thing, but it's something you've never seen before. As you can tell, this Quest might have both dark and light elements, but in a basic form, it's about exploring this world that neither you nor the MC has ever seen.

>>42248615
Yeah. I considered dragging it out a couple of threads, but then it'd feel like I was cheating you and then forcing "dark" upon you.
>>
>>42248651
Are we going to be mostly traveling around or are we going to have a sort of base of operations?
>>
>>42248707
That's up to you to decide. You could either always travel and never stay in one place for too long, or you could always return to one place with the findings/information you recover in your travels.

Not sure if you already left, but will crafting be a part of the quest?

There was a quest that died a while ago, and it left me craving more information about the crafting system. Wish I could remember the name, it was about a guy with a rifle and weapons/armor were all made from bone.

You can make it a part of your quest, like making potions etc.
I can try and get more into the micro-management later.

God, I loved that quest. The fights over how to mod our gear were awesome, and no matter what side won, it would prove a useful improvement
