>You are a villager girl named Ellen from a small village in the nation of Neir, on the continent of Teege. As a member of the local militia/guard, you were trained in swordplay. Your fighting style is best compared to the hero class, though you're officially considered a knight of Neir.

>Your party is again split, but since no main character is with the smaller group, you won't necessarily be required to follow them group for its brief adventure. It'll just be an option to play along with at the start of the next few chapters.

>The questmasters are Octoling (myself), and Grandflaw. There's no particular rhyme or reason to who posts when, and sometimes one of us might not appear all.

>Character Death is always a possibility (this is Fire Emblem after all), but your actions can very easily influence who lives and who dies.

>Voting periods will last an average of ten to fifteen minutes, but this may be increased, decreased, or generally changed at any given moment based on voter turnout.

As Ellen, alongside the rest of Garrus' companions, continues to travel towards-and hopefully intercept-Ahua and the rest of the Garou she brought to fight, the Great Miles mercenary company heads North from Rakche, hoping to find signs of wyvern squadrons hidden within the snowy peaks of Tordo.

>A. None of our business. Let's keep following Ellen.

The Great Miles are heading north, accompanied by the Hero Gorman, as one of a few search parties investigating the regions of Tordo just North of Neir. Their destination is the most directly close to Rakche, the capital, and thought to be the likeliest of the suspected locations they could be hiding out.

Not much is known about these mountains, but, should you spot them, you are not to engage the Emperor's Flight alone unless absolutely necessary. ESPECIALLY not if they have Lars along.

That being said, who, exactly, are you?

>A. Miles, the leader of his eponymous company. A sage who has inherited great skill in fire magic.
>B. Devon, the good-natured fiancee of Miles. A commoner who uses the skills of the bishop class.
>C. Bryce, a boisterous magenta-clad bard and old friend of the boss. He's big and he revitalizes. There's not much more to say.
>D. Asra, trained from birth as a Peshkatz Assassin, managing to run away from her past. Often quiet and single-minded.
>E. Laurina, a former pirate and the most recent member of the company. Moody at times, but much less than she once was. (pirate class)

You are Laurina. Until a couple years ago, you were a nobody pirate, doing dirty deeds and lining the pockets of Captain Arvo, a fellow who controlled an entire fleet of pirates.

A chance meeting with someone who is now your ex led you away from that life very shortly after your particular ship was hired out for mercenary purposes by Duchess Victoria. You remember very strongly disliking her at the time.

One thing led to another, and now you've gone from a complete nobody to... The second least-known member of a famous mercenary group.

Yippee.

So, miss "raised on the open sea in a warm archipelago," how're the mountains treating you?

>A. You have a coat, so you're fine

Well, both of the places you grew up in were pretty hot, and you're cold now, who wouldn't be? It's not like the sea can't be an absolutely freezing place in colder seasons, so this isn't completely foreign to you.

Anyway, you've put up with crap for most of your life, and this is hardly the worst of what you're willing to frown and bear.

Honestly, Bryce seems to be doing much worse than you, despite his attempts to hide it. That pompous idiot insisted on wearing his usual magenta getup, and still hasn't even thrown a coat on.

If that idiot freezes himself, you're all down a bard, and with his skills as one in particular, such a loss would be massive to your lot's energy and morale. Someone needs to tell him to cut it out and put on a damn coat...

...and you're not doing it.

Ultimately, Miles manages to make him listen to reason, but he seems to deliberately pick a rather small jacket for... He said "aesthetic" or something.

Miles speaks up a time later. "Anyway, we should be reaching a settlement soon enough, assuming the weather gets no worse. Surely they'll have a place we can rest, warm up a moment."

If there's one things I learned about pirates from Ross,

it's that they can slaughter literal legions of undead and other, more terrifying monsters, all by themselves.
>>
>>42277274
You pass the time on the way to this apparently-nameless settlement speaking to Gorman a bit. In the brief time you've known each other, you've both become much more proficient with axes, and he's reminded you that your father, Durvan, was a respected war hero in his own right for Dain, before... Well, something he did during the war led him to somehow believe the safest place to move your family was a goddamned pirate hellscape.

There was a pretty big portion of time where last anyone anywhere had heard, he'd been shipwrecked, and your mom died during that time. Instead of sticking around with your stepfather, you ran away and joined the most infamous profession of the Southern coast and beyond of Teege. You'd heard that he's turned up again since then, but never actually had the chance to return to Ulir. Your ship was hired out by Victoria shortly after you found out.

Anyway, you're not here to talk about training, or reminisce, or anything else. You just matter-of-factly tell Gorman, "I'm going on ahead."

He matter-of-factly tells you not to run too far off, then goes to tell your boss.

As you travel ahead, you encounter two corpses, by whose state of dress you can assume are-were-bandits.

"Laurina, have you found something?" Miles is the first to notice you standing there.

"She's found bodies." Asra says from behind you. You jump away, hiding your startledness, and shoot her an annoyed look she doesn't seem to register.

"They look like they were brigands," Devon says, "but... What could have done this? Could Lars have..?"

Gorman interrupts her. "No, Lars uses wind magic, from when I've seen him. These were clearly burned by..."

And now it's Miles' turn to interrupt, with, "no, no fire magic I've ever seen would leave marks so... like this. There... might be manaketes in the village ahead."

"Hey, though, we were prepared for this!" Bryce puts his fist in his opposite palm a few times. "We can take down any dragon in our way!"

Bryce can be a boastful idiot all he wants, you don't care.

That being said, you make sure to tell the group, "bandits do this to themselves a lot. This... mamkute might not be our enemy."

"Eh, I guess so... But you can bet if it is, I'll shove my first down its throat!" Bryce performs a bicep-polishing gesture, and the group moves past the charred corpses.

Soon enough, you find yourselves at a small settlement, having little more than a bit more than a half-dozen cabins and a very small-looking inn, aside from what looks like some sort of town hall towards the center of the place, just slightly bigger than the inn, and much sturdier-looking than anything else.

He shows you the paper, forgetting that your reading comprehension has always been... rather low. You didn't not learn or anything, you just... Words get mixed around really easily when you look at them.

"...yes, this is. Probably about mamkutes." You can make out that much, and the words "ICE," "FIRE" and "WANTED," anyway. There is also a rather poor illustration of a person's face next to one of a... you think it's a dragon.

"Says 'wanted: Fire Dragon, named Michalis. Fugitive manakete on the run from the Ice Authority, wanted dead or alive. Approximately three-hundred years old...' Yeah, real helpful. "I'm outta here. Need some kind've socialization." Bryce goes up to talk to the innkeeper with that, asking him, "don't get that many travelers 'round here, do ya?"

The innkeeper tells him, "not really. People still think the North is some awful place, but it's just... Smaller than its size. The Ice Authority stays out of our business, and sometimes there's the odd bandit, but we're made of stronger stuff than them. We've got nerves of ice."

"So, uh, no... Guys on wyverns?"

"Not 'round here, no. Only thing even close is Ormr, and whenever he comes around the bandits are even less of a problem and more of an ice sculpture."

You sort of stop paying attention to them and pay the kid mind instead. "So... what's your deal?"

He asks, "me?" After you nod, he continues, "well, I'm just sort of... Here, I guess. The settlement I'm from was leveled in a blizzard, so I've been traveling South since then. I don't know why they thought settling here was a good idea."

While you're still a bit too introverted, Bryce feels compulsed to ask the innkeeper, "so, uh, that Michalis guy on the poster... Why's the Ice Authority after him?"

"It says on the poster, don't it? Fire dragon. Threats to our very way of life who would raze our cabins in an instant. Ice Authority's been hunting 'em down for 'bout as long as anyone can remember, and word is they're close to eradicating them."

"Alright, sure... Be careful, kid."

Whether those last three words held any hidden meaning or not doesn't particularly matter, but you head back out into the cold with Bryce, rejoining with Miles, Devon, and Gorman. The leader of the bunch says, "we just finished speaking to the apparent leader of the region, an ice dragon named Ormr. He thinks he saw a horde of wyverns fly East of here, so... presumably their attack won't immediately focus on Rakche like we thought, assuming that was the Emperor's Flight."

"Well, they say anything about a silver wyvern with the bunch? That'd be a dead giveaway, assuming Khozen's come along." Bryce asks.

"In such a situation, should we really be wandering around alone?" Devon says, before continuing, "I'll go with you."

You... probably won't get her to back down on this, and Gorman adds, "might as well make it an even split, then. I'd like to see what of this place there is myself."

Another one of those wanted posters is posted there, but there's... Really, not all that much to write home about.

After a few minutes at each stop, you start back towards the two semi-notable locations in the settlement, only to see a bit of a commotion outside of the inn. "Right, Nils, Nils... Awfully resilient for a human your age, right?"

"Well, surviving a blizzard, not much else feels cold, Lord Ormr."

"Ah, and I guess you don't really need a haircut either. Little scamp..." Ormr laughs and ruffles "Nils'" hair.

"A-alright, you can stop now..."

Ormr just keeps up his warm laugh, but it gets... Gradually meaner as his messing-with becomes harder, ultimately yanking away his hair to reveal a much neater, shorter, straight, bright red locks underneath, with matching eyes and pointed ears.

"Oh, a wig? I didn't even know you could come by these... Tell me now, why would you hide such distinct red hair? Why, that sort of thing, with those eyes and ears... You could be quite the celebrity!"

"H-hey, wait..? What did he even do?"

Gorman looks at you, certain this won't end well, then draws closer, hoping to help defuse the situation.

"Well, it's not what he's done, per se, but who he is, you know how it is? You're sellswords, right, you're familiar with his bounty. Tell you what, I'm not the fondest of confrontations, and I'm known as a generous old dragon, so I'll even pay you all the bounty on this fellow's head if you don't obstruct justice."

"H-hey, that's... You say he hasn't even done anything? He's... He doesn't deserve to be hunted like this!"

"Hey now, hey now, I didn't say he is. I'm just saying he is, and that's the way it is, so let's just all play nice."

You draw your axe and get between the probable fire dragon and the ice dragon's goons.

"If you don't want a fight, then turn around."

"Hey, hey, young lady, I said I didn't want a fight... But if you're obstructing the law, I don't really have much choice." Ormr addresses his minions, "make it quick, please. Maybe an example, even."

And with that, all four nod, draw their axes, and come swinging at you.

You hold your ground against... all four of these axes... As you hear Michalis backing away anyway.

You realize this wasn't the best idea.

You are now Devon, and one of your friends, your coworkers, was just cut down defending this Fire Dragon.

Pretty much immediately, Gorman springs into action, cutting down one of the fighters with his sword. Ormr simply says, "my, my, how unfortunate that it has to be this way..."

With no regard for yourself, you rush in, brandishing your Mend staff, waving it menacingly at the fighters and growling to disguise the fact that you're waving it over your friend. By this point, only two ladies remain out of the fighters, and Ormr frowns.

"My, my, obstructing me like this... I'd thought it was just these two, but no. I... may need to dirty my hands myself."

He reaches into his robes, fishing out two pendants around his neck: one an icy blue, the other red. "Oh, by the way, Michalis... You dropped this on the way down South." He handles the blue one for a moment, taking on another form in a flash.

>A. Get Laurina out of here!

>B. Have Gorman get Laurina out of here!
And get back. Do we know if our Mend staff was effective enough? If we do and it wasn't, follow after Gorman so we can keep healing Laurina.
>>
>>42281790
Heal Laurina so we at least know she's not bleeding out, then distract bossman while Gorman kills the 2 goons.
We can try sleeping bossman too but I doubt it'll work.

After the goons are dead we can let Gorman try to hold him off while we get miles and crew

Any other ideas?

"Michalis, get Laurina out of here!"

"Yeah, sure, ask the scrawny guy..." He rolls his eyes, then sheds his light robe, revealing a pair of red-orange wings and a sleeveless orange shirt underneath. Along his arms are tattoos (are they tattoos?) of flames, seeming to run along his body. He's also... A bit muscular for someone who looks 14.

He kicks off his boots to reveal birdlike talons, picking Laurina up by them by her coat and taking off quickly towards the town hall thing.

She still looks a bit messed up, but not the mangled mess she was just before you waved your staff.

Gorman has made short work of the last two goons, and you try your hand at waving your staff some more at Ormr... Yeah, no dice.

You and Gorman stay behind and fight, hoping that the other three Great Miles will arrive shortly.

"You're just making a big scene," Ormr warns, before nearly hitting Gorman with icy breath, "and the people of this town, they're not going to be happy about what you're all doing, after I was so helpful to your leader."

"Quit your talk of reason," Gorman says angrily, "by idly perpetuating these hunts, you're absolutely the violent monster you pretend not to be."

After a few more moments of fighting, you and Gorman have your backs against the outer wall and door to the inn, respectively, keeping Ormr just barely at bay. Apparently he doesn't want to damage the settlers' property.

You hear the door open.

>>
>>42282311

>>
>>42282270
You quickly shout out. "Behind you!"

Gorman winds up barely grazed by the shitty axe of the innkeeper, stumbling forward and right away from the inn, turning around and slashing at his assailant.

A nasty-looking blast of icy breath encompasses Gorman after he gets to be a safe distance from the inn for Ormr's standards.

He's not completely frozen, but he certainly looks... Chilled, and drops his sword in response.

"My, my, I'm not sure if I can trust this little ploy, dropping your weapon like this..."

>A. Would healing Gorman do anything?
>B. Strike Ormr with Aura!

You are not going to let this Ice Dragon kill Gorman. Immediately, you open up your most powerful tome of light magic: Aura.

You're not sure how resilient this guy is, but you know that you can hit him hard enough to get his attention, hugging the wall of the inn as you fire it off.

"That's honestly starting to sting a little... Maybe if I'm precise enough, I won't hurt dear departed Ulrich's business."

He flickers his tail, and raises it, but you're not stopping your onslaught. He's focused on you, and that's what matters. His sharp-looking tail spins, you throw another aura, it draws back, you're not holding back, he drives the tail forward towards your tome-wielding shoulder, you close your eyes and brace for the inevitable as you fire off another Aura before suddenly dropping your tome...

...and you feel a familiar warmth, violently encroaching the weakened manakete for a coup de grace. The manakete reverts to his humanoid form, twitching, only for a dagger to be driven into his throat. You blink and shiver, seeing Asra wielding it and staring at you, eyes widened.

Your fiance, Miles, approaches from city hall's direction, accompanied and Bryce. Presumably the former was the one who gave the penultimate blow to Ormr after your volley wore him down. They look towards you, and in an instant, Miles' look of fortitude turns into one of shock. "Asra..?"

>A. What's the matter

You immediately tend to Gorman (using your less-dominant hand after your main one feels sort of sluggish), asking about Laurina and Michalis. Miles and Bryce are speechless, but Asra calmly explains that they had to fight their ways out of city hall, but the two you mentioned are safely there. Also, that you won't exactly be the most popular people in town soon and should probably get the hell out fast. You nod in understanding, and general tiredness. You've been feeling increasingly tired out of nowhere, and when Gorman is sufficiently healed, you finally notice a trail of blood leaking from your shoulder where Ormr was aiming to the ground below. You've... lost a lot of blood, and the wound is generally pretty damn violent. Your aura tome is all bloody and everything.

"Oh, that... explains a lot..." You smile and promptly collapse, the last thing you hear and feel being your fiance catching you and muttering your name.

Your wounds were thankfully not fatal, at least not immediately so, managing to be patched-up the old-fashioned way, but you and Laurina would both be out of commission for a good amount of time. Miles had to call off the mission and haul ass to Rakche, but the information he'd learned from Ormr still proved invaluable.

He hasn't left your bedside since getting back to Rakche, and desperately wishes you would wake up. Laurina was worse-off than you, dammit, so why did she bounce back so quickly?

>To be continued next thread
Sorry for how abrupt this ending turned out, but... Yeah, fuck the backspace key.

When I wrote the second-last post, the plan was that Devon was a dead woman walking, but then I figured that it would've been kind of stupid, but still wanted this chapter to be a warning that the plot isn't fucking around now. I still have PLANS for the Great Miles collectively.

>>
>>42282960
Well, I hope we got enough info to say that there isn't going to be a surprise attack from the North. And thank you for your mercy, too.
>>
>>42283012
Wouldn't the ice dragons be out for everyone in the Great Miles and not just Devon? Laurina started the fight and Miles and Asra finished Ormr off.
>>

Anon, don't say that.

It's never going to be perfect but we gotta work to make the best out of our situations
