> NEW YORK CITY, POLO GROUNDS

“The sudden loss of Colonel Engelhardt was a harsh blow to the Magisch Korps. The Strategic Services Office is of the understanding that the Korps has ceased all public activities in the archaeological and military fields. However, as a cohesive unit they have not been dissolved, and leadership appears to have passed on to the Major you may know as ‘Knives’. They have ceased to be a threat at this current time. But rest assured, without Colonel Engelhardt’s control, the Magisch Korps may become more savage and violent in its operations. Make no mistake. They are defeated, but not annihilated.”

That little speech that Operator #5 gave to you, Christine Hunter – Magical Girl Liberty, Agent of the Strategic Services Office – stuck in your head even months after the operation in the Arctic. The very idea that that wild and crazy girl could replace Engelhardt after what happened sickened you to the bone and horrified you. If Engelhardt was bad, Knives was even worse.

Recovering from the wound you received from apparently now having some sort of anti-magical shard stuck in your chest was hard. But thanks to the tender care of your fellow Magical Girls and the Messengers of Magic, you regained your strength and then some. That piece of the Shard may remain, but it does not appear to have any adverse effects so far. And with the Magisch Korps’ defeat and near complete annihilation, that meant rest.

A lot of rest.

So you were able to kick your feet up, wear your Sunday dress, pick up a scorebook and a pen, and watch a ballgame with Rana and Sumire.

Or, well, just Rana. Sumire was late. Very late. As usual.

It was now the top of the 7th inning, with the Giants facing the Dodgers at their home turf. Score was 2-0 with Giants leading. Rana was holding your hand, clutching it with fierce intensity. She got into games involving the Dodgers a lot, mostly to complain about how they’d completely mess things up. And indeed, with the Giants shutting them out who could say otherwise?

But today was different. It was the 7th inning. The Dodgers had not reached base once. The little left-handed pitcher for the Giants was a young man from Nebraska, brought up from the farms with a devastating curveball that just seemed to drop as if slapped down by God himself. And like Rana, you too were actually getting quite into the game. You stood up and grit your teeth with every hit that turned into a flyout, or even bouncer that turned into a groundout.

Sumire was not one to understand the implications of this. This pitcher was throwing a perfect game.

You’re not going to say anything, you’re not going to jinx it.

You’re tapped on the shoulder, then you look to your right to see Sumire now, wearing a dark green dress with a green little flower upon the breast. “Hey, Libby! What do you think?” She turns around on the stairs that you’re sitting next to. “Bought it with my bonus! And what can you say, money well-spent right?”

“Not now,” you say. “It’s two outs.”

She crosses her arms, pouting. “Aw come on, Libby.” She sits down in the seat next to you. “Yes, I know I’m late, but hey, it’s just baseball.” You, Rana, and a few other members of the crowd turned to her in surprise and shock.

You sigh, leaning back and crossing your legs. “Well, for what it’s worth, you do look nice, Sumire.” She smiles, looking to watch the game. “Don’t they have this back in Japan though?”

“Eh, not since they banned it,” she says. Banning baseball? Goodness. “So what’s going on now?”

“Two outs, top of the seventh, no men on base, no walks, no hits, no nothing.”

[2/3]
>>
>>42290425
[3/3]

Sumire blinks. “Is he throwing a-“

Rana yells, “Don’t say it!” Sumire leans back, surprised by the normally meek Rana’s outburst. “You’re going to jinx it!”

Sumire holds her hands up. “Alright, alright…” She leans on you, pouting. “Still boring though…” You sigh, patting Sumire on the head. She just has to suffer for two more innings. You’re part of history here! Not even Walter Johnson’s ever thrown a perfect game!

Your communicator rings. Oh no. Not now. You pick it out of your purse. Your communicator, standard-issue to all Magical Girls, was a small little device no bigger than a child’s shoe that sent out morse-code signals to operatives. You put it to your ear. Couple of beeps, a long beep, two beeps there, ugh.

Oh no. Operator #5 needs you for briefing. Now.

You slam your head on the seat in front of you. Why now?

“Something the matter?” asks Rana.

> “No. Nothing.” Stay.
> “I gotta go.” Go.

Knives is now in charge. That seems like a really bad decision, like, I cannot imagine the Magisch Korps not bleeding what personnel it still has as a result of that decision.

Though I suppose nazis making good decisions would be wildly unexpected.

You never know anon, have you considered that Knives may focus all her crazy on Liberty, leaving nothing left for the day-to-day running of the Magisch Korps?

That doesn't really seem like it would alleviate the issue. Then again, how Engelhardt kept that band of crazy assholes together and somewhat functioning, and even working with non-crazy non-assholes like our looted kraut, is a goddamn mystery for the ages.

Let me quickly recap things for you before I post the next update.

> Liberty is a Magical Girl, working as an agent for the Strategic Services Office. Rana and Sumire are also Magical Girls, Bomber and Lightning respectively. Rana was met during an incursion in New York and Lightning during a mission in which Liberty had to bribe her away from the Nazis.

> The last arc involved the Shard of the Immaterium, an immaterial inter-dimensional shard that could rip a hole into the fabric of reality under the right circumstances. Liberty and friends defeated Magisch Korps, which resulted in Engelhardt being pulled into anti-magic dimesnsion.

> Magisch Korps consists formerly of Colonel Engelhardt, the Puppeteer Magical Girl. Her cronies involve Knives who has a crazy obsession with Liberty and is completely nuts. Also involves the other three of the Fuhrerous Vier including Rapier, Court Sword, and Saber, girls recruited who fight with anti-magic weaponry. And the Storm Ace, a Pat Roach style heavy who shows up and suddenly the dice rolls simply stop favoring Liberty. Also included are the Sturmkinder, a multinational cadre of Magical Girls working with the Magisch Korps for various reasons. And also including the ground-level mooks who get killed in the numbers by Liberty and company.

You sigh. “Hold on.” You pull up your communicator then quickly send a response back.

L: PLEASE WAIT. 7TH INNING. NO HIT. NO RUN. NO BB. TWO RUNS GIANTS.

#5: I AM A FOOTBALL FAN. DO NOT CARE. COME NOW.

Damn it. Of all the people.

You stand up, sighing. “Guys, I gotta go.” Rana and Sumire look up at you. “Urgent stuff.”

“Oh.” Sumire stands up. “Let me go too-“ You push her back down into her seat. “Hey!”

“You paid for the ticket, you’re going to watch the game. Rana, make sure she stays here.” Rana immediately brings Sumire in a tight hug, grabbing the greedy little Jap’s chin and pointing down to the field. “Well, I gotta go. But hopefully I will be back in a little bit. It’s just a little bit of urgent business. Alright?” You wink. And they both wink as well.

“Um.” As you walk away, you hear Sumire talk to Rana over the crowd. “You can let go of me.”

“If I let go of you, you’re going to escape.”

“Fair point. Can I have some of your hot dog?”

“Ew no! I just bit into it!”

“Come on, I didn’t eat anything and I don’t have anymore money”!

You shake your head.

You reach a phonebooth just outside the Polo Grounds. Standing next to it is a NYPD Cop. “Hey, Johnny,” you say. “How’s the weather?”

“Sunny as usual,” he says. “Might be cloudy tomorrow.”

You nod. “Guess I’ll need to bring an umbrella.” Codewords exchanged, he lets you into the phonebooth. You hit the pound key and the five key, then watch as Johnny bangs on the phone booth. A shroud drops over the glass, and now you’re going down into the dark depths of New York.

Ugh. Missing out on a perfect game. Damn it. If you miss it, you’re going to give #5 an ear-thrashing that’ll turn him deaf. The elevator stops, and you press a button by the door. It opens up into the Strategic Services Office New York Outpost. This particular long wall is dedicated towards all of the secret transports down into the base. And you step into the main central command room, where a host of radio techies, secretaries, and officers hang around a large map of the world. You step around, occasionally nodding to someone as they pass by.

But your ears do catch the game on the radio. 8th inning now, still no hits and no walks. Damn it, damn it. You’re going to miss it!

You reach #5’s office and knock. It opens up for you into a dark room, and you step inside and watch as a TV screen drops down from the ceiling. Through a static screen, it slowly reveals the shadowy figure of #5, at his desk, looking down on you. “Hello, Liberty,” he says with his slight southern drawl. “I’m glad you were able to put national security above baseball.”

“Can we make this quick?” you mutter.

“The Messengers have come to me with an urgent request for the recovery of the Atlas of Forever.” Your cool demeanor suddenly looks a bit immature now. So you click your heels and look up at him at attention. “Kirby especially was insistent you take the mission. We are aware that your wound regarding the Shard has not been fully healed, but we believe that you may be… adequate for the job at hand.”

“So what is it?” you ask.

“The Atlas of Forever is an ancient artifact of incredible power, said to be able to… rewrite the world’s geographical features. An ancient civilization used this Atlas to create fertile land where there was none, and create natural barriers against opposing societies such as mountains and deep rivers. This Atlas must be found and recovered. If that is not possible, then destruction shall be your course of action.”

You place your hands on your hips, sighing. Kirby, always assigning you to the tough missions. If this is a tough mission. “I’m guessing someone’s already after it?”

“We have received reports that the Magisch Korps is working with local Imperial Japanese Army elements in China. They are following a lead from Anselm Schwarz, who wrote extensively of such a topic.” Oh. Him. Awkward. “We believe that they may already have a substantial headstart in finding the Atlas, and if they find it… who knows what they may do with it. The Messengers were quite clear that the Atlas holds incredible power over Earth’s geography. We must not let them find it.”

“Very well,” you say. “So. Where do I start?”

“We have three potential starting points for you.” His screen squishes to the side, allowing a list of three locations to appear alongside him, along with specific information about him. “These locations have potential information regarding the Atlas’ location.”

> The Japanese are developing a “Super Yamato” battleship in a shipyard on the Kyushu island of Japan. We have reports that Magisch Korps personnel were spotted at this shipyard. They may have left documents or information regarding the Atlas here. Beyond that, destruction of the Super Yamato would be a great help as well.

> A local Chinese resistance cell operating out of the mountains may have further information regarding the Atlas’ location. This particular cell seems quite… strange.

> The original flagship for the Magisch Korps, the Little Lady, is currently moored in Bombay. Operatives report they have spotted Magisch Korps leadership in the area, who may know something we don’t.

“The Japs really let the Chinese have it, especially at Nanking. I want to help give them a fighting chance. But… what exactly is the problem with this cell?” you ask.

Operator #5 seems to hesitate, then says, “They are a sect of secluded monks who operate out of the mountains, who attack isolated Japanese units venturing into their territory. They have already taken in many refugees of the war in their temple high in the mountains. So far, the Japanese seem content to let them roam, but a man on the inside tells us that will change very soon. You are to learn what you can from these monks, if possible the location of the Atlas.”

You nod. “That doesn’t answer my question.”

“We at least know that they may have further information. But as to their particularities and their behavior, that is irrelevant. They will cooperate with you, guaranteed.”

You cross your arms. “#5, I need all the information I can get. What is their problem?”

“… well, for one thing, we have scattered reports of them – and these have not been confirmed – of them communicating with… the dead. Spirits. Ghosts.” You nod. “You do not seem surprised at this.”

“I’ve seen stranger,” you say.

“Very well. However their necromagical tendencies may be, they will cooperate if you mark yourself an ally to them. We will have a pilot and a plane chartered to take you as far into China as possible, but as for the mountain trek, you will have to make it yourself.”

You raise your hand. “I’m being sent alone?”

“No. Lightning and Bomber will make the trip with you. I urge you to use caution however, the Chinese may not take particularly well to a Japanese Magical Girl following you.”

“Well…” You scratch your chin. “I mean, Lightning knows how to speak Chinese but… can’t we send someone else?”

“The only other person who knows Chinese is Anneliese, and unfortunately she is already investigating reports regarding the Nazis research into atomic energy at the Atlantropa dam. If she is available however, I will let you know.” Good, good. Would be nice to see her again. “As for you, I advise caution. The Japanese may not be as powerful as the Magisch Korps, but be aware that they have already found… inventive ways of getting around their weaknesses in armor and infantry tactics.”

You nod again. You’re fully aware of the stuff they were doing at Skull Island. Those poor dinosaurs.

“Good luck, Liberty.” The screen turns off.

You pop out of the phone booth again, and then make the walk back to the entrance of the Polo Grounds. There, you see Sumire and Rana in their Sunday best. Rana is talking Sumire’s ear off about how amazing the perfect game was. Oh, right. You missed the perfect game. Damn it. You slap yourself upside the head, and this seems to get their attention. “Christine!” Rana bounces over to you, grinning happily. “Oh, you should’ve seen it! The last pitch was on a 3-2 count, two outs, with Gordon pinch-hitting to try and break up the game! He fouled the ball off ten times before he put it into play!” You place your hand on Rana’s head, smiling. It hurts. And not just the Shard in your chest. But the empty hole in your heart knowing you missed out on history. Rana blinks, her grin dropping a little. “Christine?”

Sumire walks over, placing her hands on her hips. “You-know-who has a you-know-what for us?” You nod. “Where to?”

“China,” you say.

Sumire narrows her eyes. “China?” She crosses her arms. “Seriously?” You nod your head, sighing. “I better get paid extra for it. I don’t like working with the Chinese.”

“Why not?” asks Rana.

“Reasons,” mutters Sumire.

Rana sits on the bench in the gym as you and Sumire take the ring. You’ve set aside your best Sunday dresses and have put on some fresh shirts and knickerbockers. After wrapping your hands and clenching them tight, it was time for a fresh boxing ring spar. “Alright, get ready, it’s time for me to win one of these for once!” yells Sumire.

You hold your hands up. “Yeah, yeah. Put your guard up, Sumire.” She nods, and you both quickly bump fists in respect, then assume your positions at your corners.

“Come on!” yells Rana. “Give her what for, Christine!”

“Who’s side are you on!?” shouts Sumire. You respond by a quick jab to the cheek, sending her to the ropes. “Agh! You little-“ She damn near tackles you, handing you a flurry of jabs and uppercuts to your well-guarded wrists and arms. Nothing you can’t handle. You have to admit, Sumire’s gained a lot of speed over the past year, they don’t call her Lightning for nothing. But all that speed isn’t going to mean jack if she can’t make good contact.

It especially won’t help if she leaves herself open a lot. Like just now. You give her a powerful cross to the cheek again, sending her to the floor. Rana starts the countdown at ten, nine, eight- and back up Lightning goes. She rubs her cheek, clearly licking it from the inside as she brings her guard up again. “Alright, alright. You get a free shot. Now’s my turn!” She tries for a cross of her own, but you simply dodge out of the way. She stumbles into the ropes again, and she stomps the ground in frustration. “Come on!”

“Don’t get angry,” you say. “You get really cocky when you’re-“ You step back, dodging a blow. “Just relax, try and find an opening.” She gives another punch to your arm, nothing too powerful. “Keep moving, don’t let me get a bead on you.” You step back, and then give her another hard hitting cross to the face. She stumbles, turning around and leaning down on the ropes, nearly K-O’d.

[1/2]

>>42292970
[2/2]

“That’s it!” She slaps the post, regaining her guard. “I was trying to let you win but you have forced my hand.” Really? She starts going for the fierce flurry of jabs again, and keep the guard up, simple stuff. But then she tries for another uppercut below the belt. You jump back, and then try for another cross.

And that’s when she punches you square in the chest.

“Christine!” You blink, suddenly looking up at the lights. “Christine, are you okay!?”

“Libby, I’m so sorry!” Sumire is clutching your hand, looking mighty concerned. Rana looks down on you, pressing her hand on your chest, same spot where that piece of the Shard landed. “Oh my God, are you okay!? I didn’t mean to hit you there, my arm just kind of hung and I thought-“

Oh god it hurts. You grit your teeth, holding up your hand. “It’s fine,” you hiss. You sit up, clutching your chest, taking a deep breath. You can see stars and stripes around the edges of your eyes. And you can feel the faint little spike just poke and prod at your innards. “I’m alright.” You pant, wiping some sweat off your forehead.

Sumire kneels beside you. “Rana, can you get her some water?” Rana nods, quickly exiting the ring to get a jug of water. “Christine, I’m so sorry, I- seriously, that was an accident-“

“It’s fine.” You sigh deeply, bringing your legs up and taking another breath. “I’m alright. It’s a lot better than it used to be.” Sumire still looks guilty, still clutching your hand.

“Well, you beat me. That’s for sure. So don’t be such a sadsack, honestly.” You playfully punch her arm on the arm, and she simply responds by glancing away, frowning deeply. “Come on. We all knew that this Shard would be a problem, but I’m not gonna give the krauts the satisfaction of treating it like one.” You stand up, and help Sumire to her feet. “Look, I’m fine, everyone’s fine, no lasting damage was done.” You pat your chest. “Except here.”

She rolls her eyes. “Jeez, Libby.” She taps your chest, and you flinch in pain. “Way to play it off.”

“I’m just saying, I gotta get used to it. Everyone has a weakspot, you know?” Sumire grunts, letting go of your hand and moving to unwrap the tape on her hands. “Don’t wanna go another round?”

“Nah, after that?” she says. “I’d just let up on you. It wouldn’t be fair.” Well, she might be right you guess. You hold your chest, right over the area where that piece of the Shard embedded into you. A weakness, as if you needed one. Dang it, what would Mom think if she knew about this.

Well, technically she doesn’t know a lot about what you do, but that suits you fine. She has her museums, you have your secret agent… stuff. You shake your head, leaning on a post as Rana comes back with a jug of water. You take it gratefully and quickly splash your throat full of it, hydrating. Rana looks over at Sumire as she retires for the day. “Where are you going, Sumire?”

“Back home to pack,” she says. She exits the gym, leaving you and Rana alone.

Rana looks up at you, her big eyes behind those glasses of hers. “She seems cold.”

“Hey, it’s nothing new,” you say. “Sumire just needs some time. We should be getting packing too. Was there anything you wanted to bring?” She shakes her head. “Really?”

“Yep!” She holds up a finger, giving you a stern expression. “Secret operatives of the SSO must travel light, so as not to draw attention and potentially slow oneself down.” Fair enough. “You know, it does seem strange though. It doesn’t seem like you’ve really healed from the wound and yet they’re already throwing you back into the fires and the flames. You really think you could that?”

“Of course I can.” You drop out of the ring, then wrap an arm around Rana’s shoulder and lead her on. “I mean, beyond actual contact with where it landed, I don’t really notice it. Besides, my duty is to the US. If they need me, they need me, no questions asked.” Rana nods, agreeing. “So, we’re good then?”

“We’re good!” Rana smiles, taking your hand. “Let’s show those japs the business!”

-

The plane chartered for arrival into China was a Ford Trimotor, with markings indicating it as a mail plane. You were going to land at a small village hopefully and then take yourself down into the deep forests of China and make it into the mountains. Three little girls such as yourself, Rana, and Sumire, might draw some attention, but Sumire could probably ward it off. Considering she was Japanese, the cover story is that she’s a tourist going through recently conquered Japanese territories, with her western pen pals.

What a story.

Still, at least you got the plane to yourself. It was already morning when you wake up to the dull roar of the engines. Rana napped quietly in her seat, a book in her lap about modern marvels of engineering. Sumire was resting her head on your shoulder, slumbering peacefully. You might actually buy that story from where you’re sitting. You stand up, gently making sure not to wake Sumire and letting her slump over into your seat, then move into the cockpit. “How far are we?” you ask.

“We’re just about to hit the coast,” says the pilot. “Another few hours and we should be there.” You nod, sighing. You shake your head then move into an empty seat. You place your hand over your chest. That piece of the shard. Ugh. You wonder if you could survive removing it. Probably not. “Ah hell.” You blink, looking up at the cockpit again. The pilot looks back. “Don’t look now, but we might’ve gotten the Japs attention.” You look out the window to see the faint silhouette of single engine planes, just in the clouds, far out.

Oh darn it.

> “Fly casual. We’re a mailplane.”

“We’re a mailplane, remember?” You pat the pilot’s shoulder. “Just fly casual.”

He shrugs. “Fly casual she says,” he mutters. You look down at him. The heck did he say? Whatever, you go back to your seat and look out the window. You squint. Rana could probably identify those airplanes better than you could. It looks like IJA Air Force though. And if you’ve heard the stories right, you’re not sure you want three little girls like yourself being caught by the IJA.

And speaking of Rana, you hear her yawn. “Ooooh… goodness, good morning!” She stretches her arms up, groaning in relief. “What’s going on?” You motion to the window, and she stumbles over and looks out. Her tired eyes suddenly shoot wide open. “Oh! Those are Ki-43 Hayabusas! What are they doing tracking us!?”

“I don’t know,” you say. “But they haven’t attacked just yet. We’re going to be fine.” You stand up, then pick up a leaflet and crumple it up. You quickly toss it at Sumire’s head, waking her. “Sumire, wake up!”

“Ugh, screw you, lemme go back to bed…” She curls up, groaning as she shuts her eyes.

“This is serious! We might get attacked!” She slaps her face, moaning in agony at the thought of having to fight while tired. “The IJA’s sent planes after us.”

“Well screw them, you don’t pay me enough to fight planes. I’m Magical Girl Lightning.” She looks at you angrily. “Not Magical Girl Flak.” Damn it! You clutch the seat, grinding her teeth.

Rana leans in. “Huh. They’re gone.” What!? You push her out of the way and look at the cloudy skies again. They don’t just disappear. “They just started flying up and boom, they’re gone.”

You pause. Flying up, gone…

Wait. That means –

The fuselage is suddenly shot right through. Debris and shrapnel of all kinds flies right at you. Rana and Sumire are quick to duck to the floor, but even that won’t help you as you move to the cockpit. The windshield is shot up, and you look to the pilot. He’s been killed instantly by that strafing run. The controls are leaning forward without his control, meaning you’re going into a nosedive!

Oh, man. Plane rides. This is why you prefer the bus.

You look out the window to see one of the engines currently burst into flames. No way to save that. The other engine is not on fire, which is nice. But instead, it’s just simply stopped working and is now smoking. As for the forward engine, that one at least is working. You’re definitely going to maintain this altitude with two engines out and with Sumire’s fat butt onboard.

Sumire moves up to the cockpit. “What’s the plan!?” she yells.

> Grab the controls, you can fly a plane! … landing’s a different story.

You pull the pilot of the seat and then sit down and grab the wheel. “Oh hell, you’re going to fly!?”

“Does it look like we have another pilot in here!?” you yell back. She stares at you, then quickly moves back to her seat and straps in. Rana as well hurriedly straps in as well. There’s no way you’re going home with two bad engines, and with your limited flight experience, landing is going to be out of the question. There’s nothing for it, you’re going to have to gently crash the plane.

You never thought gently and crash would be next to each other.

You’re already past the coast at least. Good thing is that you won’t drown if you crash. Bad thing is that crashing is going to be very hard. “Hang on to your butts!” you scream. Rana and Sumire absolutely drown in their seats, holding on for dear life as you guide the plane back into a safe flying route and out of the death dive.

And the Japanese repay you by strafing the plane again. The barrage of bullets smash right through a wing, and then blast the functioning central engine to pieces. The propeller stops up, a hole in it. You look to your left. That engine is still somewhat working, so you got propulsion at least.

Another strafe, this time smashing a huge hole into the wing. Ah nuts. The plane rumbles and shakes as it starts falling to pieces. “I thought you said you could fly!” Sumire cries.

“Fly, yes!” You look back. “Land, no.”

You see it, a small clearing, must be a rice paddy! You’re already careening towards it. It’s getting closer, closer, closer!

Then the plane simply rocks as it hits the ground. You nearly hit the ceiling as you hold on for dear life. You hear the tail shear off, one of the wings tear itself off as the plane starts rolling onto its side. You let go and let yourself fall onto the side of the plane as it comes to a stop. At least the fire stopped. “Everyone okay!?” Please say yes.

“Yeah!” yell Sumire and Rana. Oh god, thank you.

You bust open the door and look around. “Clear. I can see the forest, but there’s also a hut.” You squint, looking to see a few figures moving in the windows. Must be the native Chinese who farm this paddy. Oh man, now you feel guilty for wrecking their livelihood. The Japanese planes buzz over ahead, near to the ground, apparently scoping the wreck out for survivors. Okay, you gotta move quick, and you gotta move fast.

Or…

> No. Move fast. Make a run for the cover of the forest.

“Grab what you can carry, hurry up.” Sumire and Rana quickly grab the bags. Sumire tosses your own backpack to you, and you hurriedly pull it on. You take a look around and sure enough, you do see the faint dot in the distance which resembles a troop truck. Japs. “Okay, let’s go, let’s go!” You, Sumire, and Rana drop down into the freshly wet rice paddy then make a run for the forest. “Come on, hustle!”

Sumire and Rana run behind you, dragging their booted feet through the rice plants and the water. You have to take another look back and sure enough, more trucks are visible in the distance. Man, these guys are prepared! “Come on! We’re almost there!” Rana squeals.

And sure enough, the rice paddy gives way to bushes, tree branches, and leaves. You shove yourself through the thick brush, magically conjuring your shield and spinning it up to buzzsaw your way through the thick woods. Kirby might disapprove of such wasteful use of magic, but you don’t have much choice. Sure, they might just be regular soldiers, but even regular soldiers tend to bring a lot of help when it comes to Magical Girls. And even if they don’t have help, they’ll be sure to let others know you’re here.

Finally though, you’re in the safety of the woods. Not for long though, considering you can hear the honking and roaring of the trucks. “Alright, who has the map?” Rana and Sumire quickly check their persons and their bags.

And they very quickly come up short. Oh shoot. You check your own backpack. Damn it! None of you have the map! You must have left it in the plane! Ugh! You slap your head into your hands. “Sorry,” says Rana.

“It’s fine,” says Sumire. “We can just ask the Imperial Japanese Army when they catch us for directions.”

“This isn’t the time,” you growl. “We’ve got to figure out our bearings.” You hear the squealing of tires. They can’t be more than a quarter of a mile away. “Which way is north? Does anyone have a compass?” Rana nods, pulling a compass from her belt. You quickly pick it up and find out which way is north. North looks like more underbrush, darker forest, excellent concealment but without a map you’re going to get lost real quick.

West is basically the mountains, as the crow flies. But there’s a town between you and those mountains, and unless you want to cause the locals trouble, maybe that’s to be avoided.

And south. You’re not entirely sure why you want to go south as that’s less concealing brush. Maybe they won’t be expecting it. Or there may be helpful Chinese rebels down south. Some of them may be communists but damn it, you can’t afford to be picky.

“We’ll head north! Come on!” You lead the girls on into the deeper and darker parts of the forest. You have no idea what part of China you’re even in at this rate but it doesn’t matter. Right now, you’re trying to avoid getting caught by the Japs. They catch you, worst case scenario for them they get killed. But for now it’s all about avoidance and not letting them know you’re here. You’re a secret agent after all, not a saboteur. On most days at least.

“There!” You point to a large tree root, and underneath a little cove .You and, Rana, and Sumire duck and squeeze yourself inside as tight as you can. You hear the hard boots and… hissing roars of the Japanese? Oh great. They DO have dinosaurs! You mentally slap your head. Stupid, you should’ve known they were up to something back on Skull Island. It was #5’s call about what to do with it, but using dinosaurs to terrorize the Chinese? That’s another thing entirely.

You hear the croaking call of what sounds to be Raptors as they smash and leap their way through the bushes. They sniff out the woods, trying to catch your scent. You heard lizards aren’t good at scent, but that was from your 5th grade math teacher who wasn’t very good at math anyway. Rana and Sumire squeeze you tight as you see the snout of it lower down over the root, right into view. You see its nostrils flare as it sniffs, its razor sharp teeth in a permanent Lizzie Borden grin.

The sweat beads down your cheeks as you watch it carefully sniff and probe at your hiding spot. Suddenly, you hear a Japanese soldier call out, and the Raptor bounces away. More soldiers come in, yelling and shouting. Then you hear the fierce clacking and bunting of a baton. They’re beating the poor animal for losing you.

That’s no way to treat pets.

The Raptor whines, then you can hear it run off, apparently trying to search for you again in a different area. The Japanese soldiers run off after it, calling out.

… You poke your head out. “Clear,” you say. The three of you exhale sharply as you step out into the clearing. You kneel down and take a quick sweep of the footprint. Those raptors are big, and are definitely not herbivores.

“When did they get dinosaurs?” asks Sumire.

“It’s a long story,” you say. You stand up, patting yourself down and looking around. “Bluntly speaking, yes, the Japanese have… have domesticated dinosaurs for use in the war effort. But it’s a very tenuous domestication.”

“Clearly.” Sumire crosses her arms, frowning.

“What do we do now?” asks Rana. “We’re miles away from where we should’ve landed. It could be days before we get to those mountains!” You hear the rustling of the trees. “And worse, I think there may be more Japs after us!”

“We’ll make contact with local resistance.” You sigh. “Much as I don’t like communists, I think we’re going to have to work with communists.”

Sumire smirks, patting your back. “Aw, come on, Libby, what about that one communist Magical Girl we worked with that one time?”

“She hogged all the Nazi science intel,” you mutter. “But that’s irrelevant now. We’ll move to the closest village. Try and ask around, see what we can do. And hopefully, they’ll give us a car or a truck or something to get to those mountains faster. If we’re really lucky, they’ll be the cell we’re looking for too.” You clap your hands. “Got it?” They both nod. “Good, good. Now let’s... let’s try and get our bearings straight. First off, there was that hut with the Chinese folks, and I think-” The leaves rustle again.

You all go back to back. There’s something out there. You hear the hissing of Raptors. They emerge from the bushes, three of them. They wear metal plates over their heads, revealing only their lizard eyes and sharp teeth. Their bodies bear a black branding of the Imperial Japan rising sun, a permanent scar and reminder of whom they belong to. They snarl, circling you like cats to mice.

“Great,” says Sumire. “They caught us.”

“They’re just dinosaurs,” you whisper. You look around. “And it looks like they’re alone. If we take them now, we can make an escape.”

Sumire smirks. "A fight?"

You nod. "A fight."
