You spend a few more hours discussing your (and their) current situation with Baron of the Final Tide, who has apparently become the de facto leader of the Abyssal forces of Tyrant of the Doomsday Machine after her death.

His plan is to move back to Tianna's Underworld and build a base there. You have no idea what Tianna's underworld looks like, but, with everything that just happened, you're quite convinced that it would be weird if you didn't draw anyone's attention.

It's not a bad idea at all. They are asking for support, in the form of two of the warships and an intact Warstrider out of those you captured from the Skullstonian force that attacked you, and all Soulsteel you obtained as loot of war.

In exchange, they would leave you the wreck of their airship, the Dark Omen, plus provide you (or, more specifically, your engineer Valeriana) with everything she'd need to try and make a new one in some shape or form.

You are, of course, still not 100% sure you can trust them, but at this point, in the situation they are in, they clearly need allies, and have only you to rely on.

Fleurdelis, however, worried you a bit. She was... emotional, and not in a particularly good way. Baron says she returned not long ago, and immediately asked Doctor in Red and Steel to open a gate with Necromancy to send her back to the Underworld. So that's where she is right now.

"We'll keep an eye on her." The Dusk Caste reassures you.

"Please do." You nod in response. "She didn't look... stable."

"She wasn't. Heck, she almost never is." He replies with a long, drawn-out sigh. "We'll make sure she doesn't do anything she'd regret afterwards. Phoenix is already out looking for her."

Is there anything else you'd like to ask of the Abyssals before parting ways?

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. Queen of Gem, now ruling the western island of Tianna. You have gathered a vast amount of allies and friends, and defeated every threat to Tianna up to now.
You recently discovered that Tianna is actually an artificial island, built around a First Age Titan: an almighty flying fortress. Your forces have crushed the Bodhisattva Anointed by Dark Water, a Deathlord who tried to usurp its power for himself.
Now you have built a solid power base, and worked hard to draw the attention and earn the trust of the Unconquered Sun. What will your next step be?

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

Is there a time limit on the deal for spare ships and warstriders? If they're willing to wait we can use them as spoils of war to show off in the Neck to hammer home how we beat a Skullstone fleet armed with first age weaponry.
>>
>>42375016
I'd ask for everything they know about all the other deathlords, but I'm afraid the infodump would take forever. Lets just ask about Mask of Winter's because that's probably the only one Maka knows of.
>>

>Is there a time limit on the deal for spare ships and warstriders? If they're willing to wait we can use them as spoils of war to show off in the Neck to hammer home how we beat a Skullstone fleet armed with first age weaponry.
Worth Noting, we actually have 9 1st age warships for loot, not 3 that was mentioned a few threads ago.

That depends if it's in the manse or not. I think being in there is kind of anathema to them, if you'll forgive the pun.

What happened to Reken (she could be our junciton with the Abyssal if she's still around), and if they'd like to come to our marriage
>>

Well, we'll invite gods, right? Not sure having them in the Manse would be good, given how young the city's deity is.
>>
Wait I remember Karas having some skeletons in the closet about wearing a dress back in Gem.

We should ask him to be the Maid of Honor.
>>
How about our marriage ceremony being exactly halfway between Pearl and Tiana?
>>
>>42375298
In the middle of nowhee and not in our cool Solar manse as a partial dedication to the Sun and Moon?

Nah let's have it at the manse.
>>
>>42375298
1.) Tianna has been devastated by the quakes caused from the attempted Titan takeoff.

2.) We have a bigass Solar Cathedral-Manse.

Why would we ever have it in the sticks when we have the aforementioned manse.
>>
"There was... a couple of things I wanted to ask you." You suggest. "Do you think the Bodhisattva is gone for good, or will he return in one year?"

"I know from personal experience that you should always plan for the worst-case scenario." He replies. "So I think we're thinking the same thing: Skullstone needs to fall before the end of the year."

"How hard can it be." You joke.

"Well... probably a lot easier than this fight was." He responds. "Militarily, at least. The real problem, of course, will be in properly breaking the Bodhisattva's centuries of lies, propaganda and brainwashing. Good thing we have Moray."

"Moray doesn't like you very much." You point out.

"He doesn't need to. We don't have to be friends. We just all want the same thing, right? For different reasons. He wants to free Skullstone because he's loyal to his homeland. You want to free it because it's wrong, and because you feel it's part of your mission as a Solar. And we want to free it because if the Bodhisattva returns and finds his power base intact, he'll move right back in, and our necks will be the first on the chopping block."

"I'm sure Moray realizes that too." You concede.

"He's a very smart person. Don't think for even one second that he's an idiot or a fool. He's just been lied to for his entire life. Some people can be very smart and still accept truth as lies if they've heard them for long enough." He warns you.

You nod. "So you'll help."

"Yes. Heck, I think we're a lot better equipped than you are to deal with Skullstone." He pauses, and smiles confidently. "This doesn't mean we won't be needing your help, mind you."

"No, no, you're right. but it's nice to know that I'll be able to count on you when the time comes." You relax a bit. "Also, I'm organizing my wedding with Tia and Amata. Will you be there?"

He makes a face. "...Both of them?"

Your only answer is a grin.

(cont.)
>>
"...Alright, who am I to judge. Well, we wouldn't miss it, I guess. Just let us know. Here in Pearl?"

"Yes. You probably don't like the Essence, but..."

"We don't, but we'll manage. We'll probably wait out of the building or something." He reassures you.

"Reken's invited too, if she's still around."

"I'll tell her. She's still rather fond of you. We should still have some good clothes somewhere around."

To emphasize that we love her no matter what, and that she needn't worry any longer about how our feelings might change because she's keeping another secret. Because the answer is they won't.

"Well, I'll see you there, then." You wave goodbye to Baron, and leave the wreck of the broken airship behind you.

"Take care!"

Now that you have the benefit of daylight, you can plainly see the number the Skullstonian artillery did on the landscape, cratered all over.

Heading south, you reach the northern shores of Azure River, the area that used to be Wyld before Pearl moved it to inside the Manse. It's still a rather weird-looking landscape, rocky and in strange hues and colors, but it seems fairly nonthreatening, at least. The entire region, where you intended to have a stone quarry, is abandoned, though you see activity going on further south, where the silhouette of Golden Reach is clearly visible despite the lingering fog.

Leaping over the river and on the other shore, you move through equally abandoned fields and farmlands, just barely established and often still unfinished, and reach the haphazard city built around the Manse. The people of the city, busy with the repair and reconstruction work, are surprised by your arrival, and salute it with disorganized but heartfelt cheer. You can just feel the thrill and elation at having triumphed in such a dangerous battle coming from them.

You don't even manage to reach the entrance of the manse that Karas appears, running up to you and lifting you up in his arms. "Maka! You're alright!"

"It was messy, but I'm alright." You smile at him. "Were you worried?"

"Worried sick." He admits putting you back down. "How's Tianna?"

"In terrible shape. Pearl?"

"A bit better, I think. The manse, at least, mostly survived the bombardment intact."

They're the dwarves of Exalted. They live underground, they used to be super craftsman on par with the best of the Twilight caste that outfitted the Exalted with weapons and armor when they were fighting the Primordials, but now they're only just really fucking good.
>>
>>42376158
Oh snap. I did miss that. Issues with the Titan are about to get very interesting. Again.
>>
>>42376178
They're Raksha who were caught off-guard by the creation of Creation and were trapped within, who were then used as raw material by Autocthon to create his own race. "Mountain folk" is an informal name for them. They're more properly known as "Jadeborn", because their souls crystalize in Jade deposits. (They are not literally made out of Jade unless they're using certain charms to do so.)

They come in three distinct castes: Workers, who are small and industrious, Warriors, who are small and exceptionally murderous, and Artisans, who are tall and lithe and smart. They used to all be like the Artisans, but then the first age Solars pressured Auto into putting them under a Great Geas which made most of them stupid and forced them to obey the Exalted.

tl;dr: They're Exalted!Dwarves.
>>
You spend the better part of the day filling each other in on what happened. (Over a cup of coffee and some spicy sweets). Karas can scarcely believe to most of the things you tell him, and you can see that he just doesn't understand more than a few of them, but you can't blame him. It's a lot to take in.

Seems like the final part of the battle of Pearl was comparatively less eventful. After you left, Ebon Siaka crawled back up from the ocean, and Karas took her on and, after a lengthy battle, cut her in two hard enough to keep her dead for good. In all the mess, the King of Uncloaked Steel got away, but he probably won't be looking for a rematch anytime soon. That pretty much shattered the morale of their forces.

Apparently there's a few bands of stragglers still roaming the countryside, but the men from the Steelshard mercenary company are hard at work chasing them down.

The constructions erected by the army and the workers as temporary lodgings around Golden Reach are mostly obliterated, but the manse itself held, and so right now is... a bit crowded, as pretty much everyone who found himself without a roof on the head has moved in.

And you have to agree, it was a good call, and the damage to the structure is easily repairable. You're no expert, but you'd say it wouldn't take any longer than a week if Valeriana puts her mind to it, seeing how fast project she leads seem to proceed.

Of course, once done that you remember there's still the "tower" portion of the manse that needs to be constructed, but that's a very long-term part of the project. The "fortress" part, the underground complex and the first three levels, are basically there.

As an addendum, the Solar Deliberative's desire to have the Mountain Folk/Jadeborn under their heel was one of the motivating factors in Autochthon leaving Creation.
>>
>>42376178
>What exactly *are* mountain folk?
They're dwarves. They reincarnate by having their souls go back into the stone after their deaths, after which the soul-geodes are dug back out and carved into new dwarves. Back before Creation existed they were Raksha, but they're fundamentally different beings now.

They were Autocthon's favorites, and they can give anyone but a Craft Twilight a run for money in the 'making shit' department.

The thing is that Gem is nigh-unique in that it's a place that actually seriously matters that ISN'T a first age ruin. There was fucking *nothing* there before the Contagion besides mountains full of untapped wealth. So, the Gem area is going to be light on Jadeborn presence, since they would have had no reason to dig out tunnels and such in there before ~700 years ago.

Once you're both done exchanging news, you go and see Silk (which prompts a grunt of annoyance from your brother, who has apparently not forgiven your little innocent joke just yet...)

You enter the sealed gates that lead to her realm, and step into another world, a vast, river-filled valley under a wide blue sky hidden behind a barred door deep into the Manse, covered in empty, beautiful marble buildings

Despite the vastness of the dimension, Silk is immediately onto you, with her groping hands, as if she had predicted your arrival. "MAKAAAA!" She screams, launching herself at you with an effect not entirely unlike what a bucket full of water would do.

"...I'm happy to see you too, Silk." You reply, peeling her off yourself. "Nice show during the battle."

"Listen, listen! Those bullies! Those bullies broke my beautiful behemoth!"

"Shh, shh, it's okay. We punished them." You reassure her.

I thought mortals could wear the armor as long as they didn't mind being aged a few weeks if they didn't have the essence normally, it's partially why I was asking, I didn't want her accidentally being an old lady because we forgot to tell her about the dangers.

Silk accompanies you into one of the houses. It's richly furnished, though clearly by someone who only has a vague idea of what furniture actually is, what with the chairs on the tables and the chandeliers bolted on the floor and hanging up.

"So, does the Time Bottle still work?" You ask, getting a chair down and sitting. It's really comfy.

"Sure does." She nods.

"I thought you'd be having problems with the gossamer. Didn't you run out?"

The fair folk gives you an enigmatic grin and a shrug. "I still have quite a bit, don't worry."

That wording was... odd. "...I though you used all of it for your Behemoth."

"At the time yes, but I'm quickly replenishing it." She explains. "I'm most certainly not doing so by raping it out of perfectly innocent and helpless humans."

You didn't notice that before, but, when there's silence, you can hear some faint noises coming from far away.

"...Silk." You clear your throat.

"What." She spreads her arms in a defensive shrug. "You were killing these dudes less than three days ago. Like shooting at each other, corpses everywhere. It's a horrible waste of people. Is it really that much worse to take some alive and, you know, keep them alive and not dead?"

You groan and massage your eyes, trying to collect your thoughts.

Compassion. Those people are no more malevolent than the ones we work with, even if they followed the Prince.

Question: could Silk reduce PTSD by removing the emotions linked to a trauma?
>>
>>42377364
Explain about the soulforging and how that's a major propaganda advantage, which will go away if we hand people over to fae to be raped. So instead we're going to let you handle all the prisoners. Feel free to scare them, but don't actually abuse them. Unless they try to escape of course.

We really don't want word getting out that we kept prisoners of war locked up with a fae. We're trying to be the good guys here.

What the hell, guys?

Since when Maka is the kind of person to have enemy soldiers in a rape farm?
>>
>>42377364
>...How many do you have?
>What are you doing with them, exactly?

And after that we'll have to ask for their release immediately or in a short while, keeping skullstonians prisoners and hidden will be very bad news if Moray ever finds out.
>>
>>42377364

>...How many do you have?
>...You can keep them for a while, but then you'll have to release them. (a week)
>>
>>42377489

Especially hypocritical since the big wig we did put our hands on got away scott free.

On the other hand, people want to inflict that kind of horror to grunts, just because. When Maka explicitly refused that kind of thing before.
>>
>>42377433
>>42377453

The idea per se is not bad, but has two major problems.

The first is that the Fae are NOT humans, and don't UNDERSTAND humans. Silk wouldn't know HOW to do that. She wouldn't know what PTSD is, what causes it, why it's a bad thing, and how to get rid of it. It wouldn't be easy to explain it to her, and it would be even harder to make her care enough to do it properly.

The second is that even doing that isn't going to "fix" a person, but merely trading one mental illness for another. If things go well, the end result would be a general improvement, but there's little guarantee.
>>
>>42377495
>keeping skullstonians prisoners and hidden will be very bad news if Moray ever finds out.
Moray will go nuts if he hears about this, he turned against the Silver Prince specifically not against the people of Skullstone

>>42377364
>>I want you to release them. Now.
We told her we'd go after other Raksha and that's what we're going to do, humans are off limits. I hate that Val is so overworked, we really need a doodad to feed Silk
>>
>>42377527
So what you're saying is that it'd be better to have a Twilight/Mental Solar direct that shit with medical charms, while using a fae as more of a tool to facilitate the process, if we were even going to attempt it in the first place.

And that attempting it in the first place is reckless and foolish.
>>
>>42377527

Logical
>>
>>42377548

>Moray will go nuts if he hears about this, he turned against the Silver Prince specifically not against the people of Skullstone

Even without him going nuts, doing this to some schmucks who just happened to be near the Fae is just wrong.

It's just torturing people for power, and that would make us worse than 50% of the people we fought in the war.

"...How many?"

"How many what?"

"How many do you have?"

"Fifty-three."

"...They were fifty-three to begin with, I hope?"

"Why would I let one die?" She seems almost insulted by the idea, like if you just asked her if she can feed your pet goldfish three times a day.

"And what are you DOING with them, exactly?"

"Well, I thought I'd train a few to be my servants. You know, cute otufits, parade weapons, just to have followers with which to make a grand entrance when I need one. You know, a few with trumpets, one to roll a red carpet, some guards - they're already pretty disciplined and good with weapons, so it shouldn't take too long to properly train them. And spawning human food is annoying, so I've set a few up in a "farm", like you call them, to grow food for everyone."

"...Food grows in here?"

"I guess we'll find out! But, yes, about half of them are a "village". I'm trying to get everything done properly: there's a village chief and a tavern with dark corners where i can put mysterious strangers with shady-looking maps. One of the houses has rats in the basement. Of course one of them will be the captain of the guard and keep an eye on everything."

"...Do they even have a city guard?"

She scratches her chin. "...I knew I was forgetting about something. Anyway, I'll fix that, and once they fall in those roles nicely, one of them will have to become the chosen hero and save the village from the evil monster that for centuries has plagued their village. That'd be me, incidentally." She sounds very proud of it. "I'll have to build a castle too, I guess, and maybe set up some sort of magical weapon he'd need - I'm still writing the story. I still don't know who the hero will be, or how to pick it, but I've narrowed down the choice of my right-hand lieutenant down to three of them, and the black spiky armor with the red velvet cloak is almost finished..."

I mean, it's in her nature to do so, and it's basically "what Faes do", so there's no real reason to get mad at her. She has no idea that it's wrong, and even if we explained, she wouldn't understand it.

But we should still get her to stop, so

Maka has been letting people who tried to kill her relatives scott free all the time.

And yes, you mess with civilians in a war, because a war affect everyone. Do you really think the civilians or Skullstones didn't lose friends and loved ones in this war?

Also, can you imagine what Maka would think if someone inflicted that kind of thing to, say, Karas?... Oh wait, we don't have to, because Skullstone did. Moray let it happen.

You shake your head, and gently grab Silk's hand.

"Silk, these people have homes and families. They already have their own lives. You need to let them go. You can't play with them like they're your dolls." You try to explain.

"Your guys were killing these guys not too long ago." She replies, not in protest, but clearly confused.

"They were doing that because they were a dangerous threat. They aren't dangerous anymore. They're prisoners now. They're not toys."

She groans in disappointment and turns around. "...Alright. I'll let them go. I just... I just wanted to play a bit."

"Can't you play with goblins?" You wonder. You can't be mad at her: She IS an alien intelligence. She obviously has no idea of the human standards for right and wrong.

"I guess I could, but it wouldn't be so fun. They're more predictable. Well, since I'd be the one making them, it'd be hard for them to surprise me in an amusing way."

"Sounds like you need a Fae playmate."

She frowns. "If it were just a playmate it could be fun, but i wouldn't want someone too serious or who takes it personally. I just want to take it easy. Someone too competitive..." She thinks about it for a second. "...Yeah, it'd have to be someone I have completely in my power. Then it'd be fun."

That would sound pretty heinous if she were talking about humans, but you're not sure how to take it considering she's talking about other fae. It's probably normal for them.

"Besides, staying with you is alright, but you have a lot of rules and restrictions on how I can make Gossamer. I'll never get powerful enough to do really fun things at this rate."

So Pearl gets it's own miniature Faerie Court.

Neat.
>>
>>42378467
Pretty much. Keep in mind, fae are utterly alien. Pretty much everything about them is a eldritch monstrosity that merely maintains an expertly-crafted illusion, to the point that even he/she/it believes it.

You're looking at Silk, and you see an endearing but weird shapeshifting creature made from goo, which is fairly clingy, more than a bit perverted, fun-loving, and who is annoyed by other Fae and wants to stay away from them, after having had to be an underling to one she didn't like for a long time.

In truth, however, all these traits are fake. She's a constructed, artificial "thing" that just PRETENDS to be all that.

A fae would be upset at you "enslaving" her about as much as you'd be annoyed if at your weekly D&D game a GM had a monster cast Charm Person on your D&D character. Maybe a bit upset right then and there, but it's just a game. And you'll play along because that's part of the game and you can try and have fun even if under Charm Person. Even if your character died, you'd just man up and roll a new one.

She relaxes. "I almost forgot! I can get some Gossamer from demesnes."

You groan. "Well that solves a lot of problems. Couldn't you think about that sooner?"

"Sorry, it never crossed my mind." She smiles. "Also, it exhausts the demesne for a while, like a few months or so, so I wouldn't do it on anything you want to use, or build a new manse on anytime soon."

"How much Gossamer would you get out of that?"

After getting some of Pearl's business in order, you head to the coast, where a sort of improvised dock has been put together after the bombardment. There, you find several of your ships, both pirates and regular navy from Tianna, as well as the magitech ships the Bodhisattva left on the battlefield, being tended or, more like, carefully explored by your crews.

"Lady Maka." Iohannes comes out to meet you, sleeves rolled up, covered in grease and dust, hair tied back. "It's good to see you back in Pearl."

"Good to see you too." You reply. "Everything alright? I hadn't figured you for a tech-savvy guy."

"I'm not." He replies, trying to clean his hands on a dirty towel hanging from his belt. "None of us is, but we'll have to become, I thought. These ships are simply so far better than regular wood-and-sail vessels that there's no comparison, so we should try and learn how they work. And Me and my men, well, we might not know much about thaumaturgy or magical science, but we know about boats and the sea."

You nod. "Besides right now we're in dire need of people skilled in such rare skills, but have very few, so it's a very good idea to try and get yourselves a bit more familiar with this stuff. Just... be careful. I imagine it can be dangerous."

"We'll be careful. Lady Valeriana and princess Irene didn't have time to walk us through the entire thing, but handed us a few books and notes, so we're trying to piece things together on our own."

"So." You turn to look at the many metal ships, in various state of damage, anchored in the shallow sea. "How do they look? Can we use them?"

"Not right now, but there's a couple we can probably get ready in a week or so. They're intact, and just need some fixing up. Lady Valeriana said she wants to get rid of that evil soul-metal used in their construction and replace it with something more wholesome, so maybe two weeks after all."

He scratches his chin. "Cannibalizing the damaged ones for parts, fishing some out of the shallow water where they sunk, and all? I'd say seven at most. So Five, after handing two to your dead friends. But some might take months to fix properly. I think."

"Think you can spare enough men to crew a ship, one of your choice, to send in a scouting mission?"

"...I think I can prepare something, yes. Where, and who'll captain it?"

Raksha still form intimacies or attachments as it were, and those can be very permanent things for Raksha. It still doesn't change them being alien monstrosities, but at the same time even if they roll up a new character they'll still have an intimacy toward you. Basically, your that favorite NPC they want to keep in their games, from campaign to campaign. So even if their roles change, their preference toward you stays the same.

It's arguable whether this is a good thing though. Even a positive intimacy is malleable thing in the hands of a fae, given who the fuck knows what they think is 'positive' during a time of day

Intimacies have more granularity than just positive/negative. For example, if Silk has an intimacy towards Maka, it's probably, 'I'm Maka's pet, and I love her!' That intimacy would remain even if she decided to reroll herself into a flaming murder-tyrant tomorrow.

She'd probably be vaguely confused about why she still feels that way, especially since it's so out of character, but the only way she'd be able to stop feeling that way is the normal, old-fashioned style of intimacy decay.

"I'd prefer to do it without violence." You reply. "But, yes, I'd like to."

"Shouldn't be really saying this, being a pirate and all." He shrugs. "But Creation's in a really sorry state. It would need some order, and not of the sort the Realm brings."

"If the world was any better, people wouldn't need to go and become pirates in the first place, I guess." You mumble, staring at the horizon.

aww, I just imagined a giant Forsaken Lion Behemoth looking thing bending down for Maka to pet and being super embarrased

>Yes.
We could and it'll probably happen, I mean ignoring the Lintha if Maka doesn't conquer the whole whole West and some other Solar get's it then we'll still have some tension.

Even in the First Age there was still crime controlled by the Solars, worlds a big place can't be everywhere all the time.
>>

That's not the question. The world would be better without the Lintha

While not absolutely impossible, I think it would take a millennium or two to manage such a feat.

The charm you're looking for is Judges Ear Technique.

well in the eclipse line we've got 3 that would be very valuable for the nation building part of this quest.

Shining Ruler's benevolence to get the 3d adder, Judges Ear Technique to detect lies, and Sagacious Reading of Intent to get useful insight on people's objectives based on what they say or write.
