You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and time has continued to flow.

The light sounds of a Duke Ellington record float on a gentle summer breeze, the only two things that keep the atmosphere in your quarters tolerable this time of year. One drowns out the racket made by the cicadas, and the other keeps the oppressive heat and humidity at bay though the afternoon. The year in the living world is now 1932: nine long years since the incident at the Maggots' Nest.

Smooth, low tones from a clarinet and a slow bass line carry your mind back through those years starting with the outcome of Central 46's inquiry into what happened that day... which to you was an obvious cover-up job. On top of that, Aizen once more had an alibi that involved being seen by a Captain at the time in question: in this case it was Ukitake.

Any discussion of the murder of the prisoners there was quickly silenced, and aside from Yoruichi's punitive measures against her own subordinates no official action was ever taken. Despite the Central 46's stance that the whole event never took place many among the Gotei 13 have been hearing vague whispers about unrest in the Onmitsukidō, and the two shingami rescued by Gin have by now disappeared, likely into the world of the living. That leaves some hope that eventually you may be able to make a case against Aizen.

Meanwhile your friends have never ceased to amaze you with their strength. Halibel's surging, swirling style that allows her to relentlessly grind her opponents down with cero, blade, wave, and fist leaves you intensely grateful she's on your side. Her companions have grown as well: Appaci's skill at applying cero in unique ways has been a boon to Mila Rose and Sun-Sung despite their indignation at having to learn from her. You do your best to encourage them, though as you suspected even arrancar struggle to apply their reiatsu to tasks beyond what's instinctive to them.

Starrk is a different case altogether, as he's politely refused to spar with you again since 1923. You have however surmised that his weapons are an extension of his soul rather than an application of cero, explaining how your Bankai didn't wipe them out. Dangerous for him, and it leaves you wondering what else about his power he hasn't explained to you.

The “Rikugun”, as Ninth Division's members have seemingly taken to calling it, is in good shape. You've been maintaining their strict training regimen and duty rotation to ensure this time of relative stability doesn't cause their skills to rust, and it's paid off. Morale is at an all-time high even as the number of escort and guard missions has steadily increased due to deepening cooperation between your subordinates and the Onmitsukidō and Kidō Corps.

Your Commandos have fractured however, since Tetsuzaemon was offered a chance last year to serve under the new Captain of Twelfth Division, Komamura Sajin. You know nothing about the Captain, but you couldn't deny Tetsuzaemon his long-held goal. He still visits you and your officers when he can. Ichinose has been considering a similar move, and has caught the attention of your adoptive sister Kaoru. Kai and Mirai seem firmly dedicated to their roles in Ninth Division: despite the fact that they'd clearly be successful if they decided to accept a promotion, they seem to have no desire to serve anywhere else.

Rangiku is in peak form, having somehow grown into a true Captain-level shinigami without anyone else noticing. That's the way your daughter seems to want it, as she's never shared with you any sort of aspirations to become a Captain herself. It's not a lack of ambition, you figure, but that she simply holds a different goal than Tetsuzaemon: and so you've kept her Bankai a secret for her even as she's continued to sharpen her skill with it.

As for your adoption, things have finally begun to feel more real to you. Today for example you've been invited to an “informal” meeting among nobles: Ginrei and Byakuya are to host, and Yoruichi, Yūshiro, and Isshin will be joining you for sure. You've heard that a few lesser nobles will be there as well, largely to accompany the more “important” guests, and Kaoru has expressed an interest if she's free.

The gentle scratching of a finished record alerts you to how long your mind has wandered, bringing you abruptly back to the present. Right on time a quiet sliding sound of wood on wood behind you announces Yoruichi's arrival. You lift the arm of the record player and switch the machine off.

“Hope I didn't keep you long, took a while to finish my hair,” Yoruichi muses as she slides the door shut after her. Sure enough, her Captain's haori is complimented today by a hairpiece that's fit more for the Shihōin princess than the Executive of the Onmitsukidō, with an arch of bluebell flowers and a single pink rose. She's really taking this meeting seriously.

“Live flowers are such a pain.”

You shrug calmly. “With the Yūreitsūro working right, you'd have time to braid a whole viewing garden into your hair... so that's not why you're late. You were really off pounding knots into you-know-who's skull this morning, weren't you?”

“Caught me,” she grins, making no further effort to hide the fact that she spent the morning catching up with Kisuke in the world of the living. “But still, ain't this convenient? Being able to step out of my room and into yours?”

“Once we got the design right,” you smirk, remembering how it took nearly a year of trial and error to secretly craft a hidden, permanent portal even with your combined skills at kidō barriers and portals. “Worth it, though.”

“I agree,” Yoruichi sighs, perching softly on the edge of your desk. “How else would I get such lovely massages after work?”

You shrug. “You could always ask Suí Fēng.”

“Right, 'cause I can see that happening!” Yoruichi snorts. “Poor girl's still stiffer than my back is.”

“I thought you said she'd been improving?”

“That's with the 'improvement'.”

You wince and quickly change the subject. “What's the topic today?”

Yoruichi swings her legs playfully as she pretends to ponder the question. “Probably has something to do with that League of Blood.” Not this crap again... you've learned nobles love talking about human politics, and the Japanese ultranationalist movements have been an endless source of interest for seemingly every one of them but you. Something about an Imperial Army faction attempting two putsches with so few repercussions always struck you as sickening rather than intriguing.

“Even the name sounds like it was ripped from a manga or something,” you observe bitterly. “And not from a kibyōshi... more like the trashy ones.”

Your partner in crime pushes off your desk, landing lightly on her feet. “Come on, you know that fussing over politics is all the fun these nobles get to have. Not everyone can command a Division for a living.”

“Still, there's no rush,” you observe calmly, after the realization that you still had some time before the scheduled meeting would ACTUALLY get started. And if it came down to it and the head of the Shihōin clan was a little late they wouldn't be able to start anyway. “Let's take it slow.”

Yoruichi shrugs before leaping from your open window to a lower roof, her body flickering as her unreasonable speed carries her out across the Seireitei. It takes you a moment to catch her up at your 'relaxed' pace, which still manages to make ordinary Shinigami look like they're stationary.

“I'm surprised you didn't use a cactus flower,” you taunt, looking her elaborate hairpiece over and wondering how it's even staying in place.

She chuckles to herself as her sandal lands ever so lightly on the head of what appears to be a shaved and waxed head for a splinter of a second. “Couldn't find one on short notice.”

“Figures you'd have looked.”

The shinigami whose head she stepped on is left to crane his head in search of what just brushed against him, but he eventually continues on whatever business he was on.

By the time you arrive at the Kuchiki manor you can tell that the other guests are starting to stream in through the front entrance, which is a leisurely stroll from where you can feel Byakuya's and Lord Ginrei's reiatsu. A blonde couple with an equally blonde young son stand near a few members of the Omaeda family, which in turn seem to be following Shunsui. Your fellow Captain seems absorbed in a jovial discussion with the Omaeda patriarch Marenoshin.

“You know what would really mess with Byakuya's mind?” you whisper to your partner.

Yoruichi flashes you an almost predatory grin. “Going in through the front like normal people?”

“Don't you love it?”

“I really do,” she agrees.

And so, the two of you stroll in through the front entrance without fanfare, though the members of the lower families clear out pretty quickly to let you through. Shunsui however gives you an almost lecherous smile and a wave, which you return in the most polite and “normal” manner you can manage... a feat that even seems to shock your fellow Captains. Normally he could have expected an elbow in the eye for making that sort of obscene face, and in fact you almost think that's the response he wanted.

“Well that's funny,” he mumbles to himself as you pass, scratching idly at his stubble. “Was it somethin' I said?”

Eventually you make your way to the appropriate room, where Ginrei welcomes you warmly to the low table and comfortable seating in the center. All around the walls are seats for members of the lesser nobility who will be in attendance, with each family provided space behind their respective patrons. Yoruichi is seated directly across from you, while as her Lieutenant and a fellow member of the nobility Suì Fēng has been permitted to sit next to and immediately behind her. The Omaedas are seated against the wall behind them. As a Captain and member of a vassal to your own new house Shunsui is sitting to your left, while Byakuya and Ginrei sit across the table and further down. The blonde family sits behind you, while Isshin eventually occupies the seat to your immediate right after a warm, familial greeting. A white-haired man among several other strangers sits behind the Kuchikis.

Your foot brushes gently against Yoruichi's under the table as you lean forward in feigned anticipation of the coming discussion, and she smiles at the fleeting contact... or is she smiling at something else? Trouble with subtlety here is that you're both so good at it. Eventually you had to learn that flirting with Yoruichi in public requires you to take the whole process on faith. But the brush you get in return seems to indicate that your intent was well understood, and you can't help but grin a little yourself.

“Jūshirō isn't here,” you observe rather lazily. “His illness acting up again?”

The man you presume to be Captain Ukitake's younger brother, or one of them at least, nods sternly. “Yes, ma'am. I'm afraid so.”

“Don't be so formal,” Yoruichi chides him. “You're acting like it's your first time at a Clan function.”

“It is, Lady Shihōin,” he replies nervously.

Yoruichi cocks an eyebrow. “That so? Well then, you're doing much better so far than some of your siblings.”

"I'll have to remember to see him when he's well again," you think aloud to yourself.

“Actually, it seems we're short a whole family,” Isshin adds as he too leans forward against his fists. “What gives?”

“You know as well as I, Isshin. That family does not like to be bothered,” Lord Ginrei answers indignantly. Come to think of it, you don't even know what that Clan's name is. They're simply not that relevant in day to day affairs, as you've learned, so much so that they may as well not exist.

Lord Ginrei continues after his frown eases. “Come to think of it, their representative is late.”

Just then, the door opens again to allow an all-too-familiar face to enter.

“My deepest apologies to everyone if I've kept you waiting.”

“I take it you brought the usual compensation for your tardiness?” Ginrei growls.

Captain Aizen nods respectfully. “It's being brewed at this moment, Captain Kuchiki. You may expect it to be served shortly.”

As you've learned since being adopted into nobility the true definition of a “casual” event versus a “formal” event is the sort of tea service that may be expected. The most formal meetings are universally accompanied by a fully formal tea ceremony, while less formal events may be accompanied by informal tea served by waiting staff as is the case today. The least formal gatherings allow for the drinking of tea, sake, or even harder alcohol according to individual taste and or need. Needless to say whenever you're obliged to attend such gatherings you trend towards the harder stuff.

“We were just about to begin, Captain,” you say with a curt nod in the man's direction, and you're surprised at how well you manage to curb the vitriol at least for the moment. “Why don't you take a seat?”

Byakuya, who has been staring at you and Yoruichi in turn this whole time as if waiting for one of you to do something outrageous and possibly offensive, seems flummoxed. His inability to grasp the situation is of no small amusement to your partner, who simply smiles at him contentedly.

The discussion that follows the tea is a tired one.

“You know, three Colorado-class battleships is really too limiting to the United States,” Yoruichi observes in reference to the Naval Treaty signed by Japan after the Great War. “Comparatively speaking, Japan did well to keep the Nagato and Mutsu.”

“Wars shouldn't be fought with salt or rice,” you quote the warlord Kenshin from memory, “but to fight over those things? That's a different matter.”

Ginrei frowns, settling deeper into his cushion, seemingly sharing with you the conclusions his own mind has long since reached. “The next war won't be over pride. It'll be over iron, and oil, and rubber. Things industrial nations crave, and the very things Japan has in painfully short supply.”

"That's why Japan is going to break that treaty," you conclude. "The militant faction sees military development and spending as part and parcel to the growth of the nation."

“But the Japanese Empire has its own ambitions,” Suì Fēng observes. “It would injure national pride and interest to be denied those ambitions, would it not?”

“Even one wrongful death can make an otherwise reasonable cause seem foolish, Suì Fēng,” Yoruichi observes wearily. “Considering that fact is the responsibility that comes with having ambitions in the first place, and that consideration isn't even a factor to them right now. A lot of people will die for those national ambitions.”

You're fairly sure that was a shot directly at Captain Aizen, though nobody aside from the three of you seem to recognize it as such. Suì Fēng merely falls silent in consideration of her mentor's words.

“Is some degree of sacrifice not to be expected in pursuing great goals?” Aizen counters, continuing the conversation hidden within the one your fellow nobles can hear. “Should the value of the goal not determine how those sacrifices are to be weighed?”

You feel strangely inclined to continue with this little game. Who knows, maybe you can tease out some of Aizen's real character this way: after all, most of what you know about him is superficial, or else gleaned second hand.

“And so how would you weigh the value of a human life?” you ask Aizen. “I mean, hypothetically speaking who would even have the right to say?”

Aizen doesn't miss a beat. “It is for those in power to exercise that duty.”

“Then as the opposition the United States should have as much say in Japan's policies as they do,” you counter. “In terms of population and industrial capacity, it would only make sense for those two powers to cooperate.”

“And yet the United States seems unwilling to use their power,” Aizen continues, and you realize that he's still not talking about the countries in question. Not really. “They may as well not have any power at all. It is only natural that those with actual power would chafe under the command of those whose power exists only on paper.”

Lord Ginrei favors Captain Aizen with a quiet but fierce glare. “You should take care who you share that notion with, Captain. It may sound dangerously close to sedition to some ears.”

“Far from it, Lord Ginrei,” Aizen replies calmly, simply ignoring Ginrei's stern attitude. “The Central 46 rules in stead of a force beyond any shinigami. To exist outside those laws would require a similar force that simply does not exist. At my core, I believe I am simply speaking as any realist would.”

The rest of the meeting drags on into the afternoon hours, though the only thing at all interesting that happens is that the Kira boy makes a bit of a fool of himself with his naïve opinions of the world. It's good to see his enthusiasm though, more noble brats could take that sort of interest in the bigger issues.

Finally the nobility begin to leave as the discussion apparently runs its course. On the way out Aizen approaches you and Yoruichi from behind, and you feel a brief surge of reiatsu.

“Of course I must say I have the utmost respect for the two of you Captains... you are the apex predators of the Seireitei, after all. I found speaking with you most enjoyable.”

“That so?” you ask, careful not to turn your head to face the man.

“It was rather illuminating,” Yoruichi admits, her expression unreadable. “We'll continue another time.”

Aizen's reiatsu subsides as he passes you silently, his hand falling from the hilt of his sword where it rests in its sheath. None of the nobles around you seem to have realized that anything unusual had happened, nor did they feel the change in the Captain's reiatsu. Troubling as the implications of that are, there's not much to be done about it now.

You decide to part ways with Yoruichi, who after quickly scanning the area for any witnesses gives you a peck on the cheek, before returning to your own Division's grounds. The sky has darkened since this morning as towering clouds have boiled up, fueled by the steamy, moisture-laden air. It's almost certain to be a storm later in the evening, or possibly through the night, so you'd rather be inside when that happens.

In the training fields you find your Commandos taking a break, with Mirai apologizing profusely to Kai as he massages an unseen injury on the back of his head.

“I am so sorry, Third Seat!” she insists. “I could try to take it out again?”

Ichinose watches in disbelief from a bench as Kai shakes his head. “Didn't do us no good last time, wouldn't do us any more good this time... ah, Captain! Just in the nicka time!”

Your Third Seat rises to his feet to greet you properly as he notices your arrival. “What's the problem, Kai? Mirai give you a bad enough trouncing for a promotion or something?”

“It was entirely my fault, ma'am,” Mirai bows. “I was trying out a new technique... and, well...”

“She lodged a seki stone spike in the back of Kai's skull, ma'am,” Ichinose explains. “It's stuck in the bone.”

“And I can't do shit with it stuck there,” Kai adds, turning to show you half an inch of stone poking out of his scalp. “Seems like it's draining my abilities.”

“Of course it is, you imbecile,” Tenkotsuki insists hotly in your mind. “That is how such weapons function. Has no one here ever seen such an injury?”

“I don't think so,” you tell her.

“Come again?” Kai asks in confusion.

You shake your head. “Nothing. Let's see what we can do for you.”

"It's really in there. Any suggestions?” you ask Tenkotsuki, carefully avoiding any reference to her own death... though she's clearly already thinking about it.

“If it were my own body,” she explains, “I would merely remove the surrounding tissue altogether and allow my natural restorative powers to handle the situation. Pulling it out carelessly risks breaking off a piece within your officer's skull.”

As much as you hate to admit it, there's really only one Division that's equipped to handle that sort of thing... and it's hers.

“Well, I guess there's nothing else for it,” you sigh. “I could try pulling it out, but I wouldn't want to snap off the end that's in your skull.”

“That would be bad,” Kai agrees. “That would definitely be bad.”

“So, we're going to go see her.”

It takes about an hour to walk to Fourth Division's headquarters, where you lead your team in through the front entrance. All around you the members of the relief Division stand at attention, seemingly stunned at the appearance of not just your Commandos, but their actual Captain. Whispered exchanges break out all around the reception room.

“Is there a problem, Captain Shiba?” the duty nurse asks you. “A medical emergency, perhaps?”

“It's not too bad,” you admit. “Just kind of unusual. Something that requires a professional.”

“Good thing you came here, then,” Captain Unohana greets you with her typical false warmth. “What seems to be the trouble?”

“... I jammed a chunk of seki stone into my superior's skull,” Mirai frowns, embarrassed. “It was an accident.”

“Well,” Unohana reassures her with a hand on the younger woman's shoulder, “I'm certain it was an accident, Fifth Seat. My Lieutenant can take care of this without any trouble, feel free to escort Third Seat Nikko upstairs.”

“Yachiru,” you reply as quietly as you can and still be certain she heard you, “if fighting me would give you closure all you need to is ask. But this passive aggressive thing you've got going does us both a disservice.”

Thankfully none of her subordinates heard your use of her real name, though it seems to have definitely caught her attention. She looks at you for the first time with the eyes of a bloodthirsty killer, no longer hidden behind centuries of careful control over those instincts that once made her the most feared criminal in the Soul Society. You're sure that nobody has seen those eyes for a long time, and being probed by them now is enough to send an uncontrollable shiver down your spine. You find your left hand instinctively shifting the position of Tenkotsuki's blade, and the scar on your back is practically sizzling.

Then, without a word of explanation, the woman before you is once more Unohana Retsu, the dedicated healer in charge of the Fourth Division. She seems distinctly more tired than before.

“Perhaps I have been somewhat unfair,” she admits, and for once she seems to be telling you what she sincerely means. “You are right, the women who we are now should not seek further needless conflict. I apologize.”

The pain in your scar subsides, and you can feel a sense of confusion coming from the parts of your soul shared with Rosa.

“For what it's worth,” you add, “I'm sure a part of her always regretted it too.”

You bow to each other gently, and for the first time it feels there's actual respect in the gesture. “Your officer will be cleared for duty by tomorrow. I will provide the necessary paperwork.”

“Thank you, Miss Retsu.”

"It is not a problem, Miss Riku."

Your left hand releases its hold on Tenkotsuki's sheath.

I th]ink this captcha uses some new automatic image classification algorithms based on deep neural networks trained on a big image database called imagenet, so they won't need human annotation. But as with all technology in active research you don't get perfect performance. Annoying as all hell that they've implemented this crap.

Yeah, they probably took the best performing image classes as captchas, and street signs are near the lower performance threshold.

It's still pretty dumb, because you can easily get the same algo they use and beat the captcha in an automated manner.

“Ichinose,” you announce as your last remaining Seated officer tries to reorient himself after being on the receiving end of Unohana's glare. “I know you have something you need to talk to me about, but it'll have to wait. There's something I need to do.”

The man nods thoughtfully. “I understand, ma'am. I'm just happy you knew without me having to ask.”

After parting ways you find yourself crossing over into the extradimensional home of your arrancar friends, and you're immediately greeted by a powerful and unfamilair reiatsu. An ear-splitting roar threatens to crack the very ground beneath your feet as you dash towards the scene of impending disaster.

“What is that disgusting thing?” Tenkotsuki retches in your mind. “Its appearance offends me, Riku! Quickly, kill it with your shoe!”

Problem is it's not a cockroach... it's a giant monster, seemingly made up of spare parts from several different animals. It seems to be a hollow of some sort, with the most overwhelming head of hair you've ever seen on any living thing. The beast's antlered head seems to spin like an owl's as it searches out its prey, which it soon begins to stomp after.

“What the hell!? Does this retarded thing even have ears!?” Apacci shouts as the three Beasts run from the monster. Strangely, they each seem to be missing their left arm.

“Actually, I'm not sure it does,” Sung-Sun observes with surprising calm from behind her sleeve as she keeps pace.

Mila Rose seems unamused. “I don't give a damn if it's got ears or not, just make it stop!”

“I'm tryin', you dumbass hairball!” Apacci retorts. “You just hafta hold it off a while!”

“Hold it off!? Are you insane, Apacci!? Can't you do anything, Starrk!?”

“Not my problem,” you hear Starrk's voice from somewhere in the trees to your left. You spot the man laying calmly in the hammock you stole for him, reading some sort of book. “Besides, you're doing fine.”

“Starrk, what is this thing?”

Starrk sets his book down for a moment. “A chimera. They made it by combining their reiatsu somehow. Apacci's idea, but the other two pressured her into trying it out.”

“Think I should step in?” you ask.

He shrugs. “Probably for the best.”

Your hirenkyaku catches you up with the fleeing arrancar, who seem immensely relieved to see you. “Hey, what happens if I kill that thing? Will you get your arms back?”

“Maybe,” Apacci replies, seemingly pondering the point.

“MAYBE!?” Sung-Sun and Mila Rose roar in unison. “WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN!?”

“I'll handle it,” you insist, activating shunkō and dashing straight at the monstrous chimera. But you're surprised by how quickly the thing can move, given its size: its fist meets yours in a titanic crash of force. Though your fist is unharmed, your progress comes to a screeching halt somewhere around the beast's elbow.

Huh. Its ligaments are actually pretty tough, making it difficult for you to gain momentum in any direction. You're effectively stuck inside its arm, and you're slowly running out of air.

“This is disgusting,” Tenkotsuki complains.

A second voice joins her. “For once I agree with the vixen, get us the hell out of here!”

You draw out your hollow mask and release Tenkotsuki, and with a roar you manage to burst the beast's limb from within in a gory explosion, the lower arm ripping free from the upper before you plant a powerful blow. The punch knocks the chimera onto its side, and as the stunned arrancar watch you pull off one shoe and start using it to beat the beast all around where you think its head is.

“Am I seeing what I think I'm seeing?” Apacci asks, stunned.

Mila Rose stands at her side, eyes wide. “Yup. She's beating it senseless with her shoe.”

“What the fuck.”

Eventually the wounded and confused beast begins to glow, and disappears. Apacci flexes her newly replaced arm to test it.

“Good thing you didn't kill it,” she comments as she offers to help you to your feet. “Might not've gotten our arms back.”
(1/2)
>>
>>42462977
It's clearly the best solution to this problem.
>>
>>42462977
The arrancar agree to give you a few minutes of privacy while you clean the chimera's blood off your clothes and body, which is a chore even with Tenkotsuki's help. It really got a chance to soak in there. But once your haori is white as snow again, you regroup with your friends to find that Halibel has returned from Hueco Mundo.

"How was patrol?" you ask.

The former Vasto Lorde sits calmly at the base of a tree, drinking water from a coconut to refresh herself. "I met an adjuchas in the deserts who didn't immediately attack me. A wolf."

"And?" you press.

"She shot spikes at me and told me to 'piss off'."

“Wow," you mutter, somewhat disappointed at the news. "I was expecting...”

“Something good to happen?” Starrk offers with a sly grin.

“Kinda?”

The man sighs. "Since when does anything good happen in Hueco Mundo?"

"We all met," Apacci points out.

Lilynette cracks another coconut over her partner's head, taking a gulp out of the husk and wiping her face. "Yeah, come off it Starrk! Don't get all doom and gloom on us!"

Halibel sets aside her water and looks straight into your eyes. You can see a deep sense of concern in them, as if something has bothered her for a long time and has just now boiled to the surface.

"How do you do it?"

"Do what?" you ask quietly.

"How do you stay so cheerful when you don't see progress for decades?"

A critical success to attack it would have killed it on the spot, and the Tres might have not gotten their arms back out of the deal. As things stood Allon ran out of reiatsu regenerating from the beating you gave it: so while you failed to deal a mortal blow, in this case it actually worked out better that way.

“My Division symbol explains it all,” you reply. “It's a flower that carries the meaning of 'rejoicing': I was given the Ninth Division because unlike its senior surviving officer, I had something to be joyous about. I found a family to love and cherish, and friends and comrades to fight for.”

“I know that Aizen would threaten the joys of the people I hold dear, and many more besides,” you conclude. “I've seen the sorts of things he does. It's exactly those sorts of threats that my Division is sworn to combat, for the sake of everyone in the Soul Society who has something or someone they care about."

“So that knowledge helps you stay patient?” Halibel presses.

You shake your head. “Hell no, but the certainty in my purpose makes bearing that burden seem more worthwhile. Finding a way to end the cycle of empty hunger in Hueco Mundo is a similarly noble purpose, I think. Don't you feel it'll all be worth the wait one day?”

After a few long moments of thought, the arrancar nods. A new sense of resolve is clear in her level gaze. “I do. Thank you.”

Alright, so here it is. But it's NOT going to look like that after tomorrow, I can basically guarantee you.

On an unrelated note, I had the strangest idea for a quest: a pulpy ninja quest set in a feudal Japan that's more aligned with pop culture imagery than history, like a blend of Basilisk, Naruto, Samurai Champloo, and Kill Bill. I actually kind of liked it well enough to start worldbuilding.

This confuses me greatly, it's a more or less original idea that I actually like.
