Big thanks to the guy(s) that have been archiving these threads. Same goes for everyone up voting them, it's great to see that people are enjoying the quest. As always, advice is welcome to make it better.

Welcome to Neolithic Pokemon Quest, Episode 4. The last 3 threads can be found at http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Neolithic%20Pokemon%20Quest

You are Cain, a 17 up year old hunter from the Endless Forest. A mysterious forest fire separated you from your tribe, and you have no idea where they have gone. Stranded alone, you journeyed to the north into a mountain range. It is here that you met Dire, a Swinub squealer(that's seriously what young boar are called). After becoming friends, you manage to fight and kill a newly hatched Beedrill. The next day, you meet a man and participate in a summer festival. As the festival winds down, you meet Rosalia, a social pariah and owner of a Pokedex. You decide to travel together, and leave as the sun is rising.

A day passes, which you spend working further on your pokedex, while the village recuperates from the massive party. The town square is drained of water, and work commences. Farmers tend their fields, shepards head into the mountains with their flock, and stone workers begin knapping new tools.

Rosalia takes you through the various shops, where people make strange and fascinating items. One offers only clothing, dyed in all the colors of the rainbow. It's extremely tempting to trade your slowpoke tail for a full set of the colorful cloth, but Rosalia drags you out by the ear. Bitch.

>>
>>42479547
You trade off small piece of the slowpoke tail for a number of useful items, as well as a few luxuries. A woman with well callused hands and pitted fingernails actually trades for the skin of the tail, not the meat! You feel a little guilty about making off so well on that deal, but you got a sling and small bag of river stones out of it. Now to figure out how to use it...

By the end of the day, you are dressed in your normal green and blue tunic, a remnant of your tribe. A large backpack with an internal frame of carved wood is stuffed full of food, a tent, and an extra set of clothing. A waterskin, the white mareep fur still in place, hangs over your shoulder. The sling is wrapped around your waist like a belt, the ammunition tied to your bag. Your spear is tied with a thin leather thong to your wrist, the hard wood perfectly suited for a walking stick.

As the sun rises above the mountains, you question what to do now.

You leave your spear and bag resting against the wall of Cato's house, and go off looking for the kindly old man. Dire proves himself invaluable, sniffing out Cato's hiding place. On the edge of one of the long fields of grain, a small creek tumbles down the terraces. Cato is sitting at the side of the creek, a large white cat resting its head in his lap.

Swinub stands back a bit from the large Pokemon, watching warily for movement. The swinub's deep brown eyes spark with intelligence, instinctively seeing a predator. When the Persian doesn't lunge at him, Dire relaxes a fraction.

"Ready to leave Cain?" Cato asks, his eyes still closed in meditation. The cougar purrs and rubs its head against his hand, stretching out its legs. No wonder Dire is scared of it, it's claws are probably three inch long blades.

"Yes. Thank you for your hospitality." You repeat something you heard another hunter say, after you were accepted into a treetop village.

"Wasn't a problem. I've heard talk that you'll be traveling with Rosalia," you nod an affirmative, "Good. It would do her good to see the world beyond this one. I remember when her brother left, cut from the same stalk, they were. She didn't come back to the village for a month. Perhaps you will be able to knap heri was going to say temper, but no metal, so... into a good person. Do make sure she doesn't cause undue trouble while you're together."

>>42480737

Abruptly, Cato stands. "Come off me, you big lummox. Should have made you into a coat years ago," the Persian looks at you with mild content, despite the insult. You walk together through the field back to the village, the husks of grain whisper to one another.

Rosalia is waiting for you at Cato's home, kitted for travel. Green and grey form the majority of her outfit, with a short brown leather quiver hanging off her hip. A curved stick balances her belt, carved with a number of designs. A flat piece of leather is strapped to each foot, for what purpose, you can not fathom. "You're late. We were supposed to leave at sunrise."

You shrug, and duck into the building to grab your gear. Slipping the thong onto your wrist, you plant the knotted wood on the beaten earth path. "So, are you going to come, or not?" You ask, grimacing as Cato stifles a burst of laughter. Rosalia huffs, throws a pointed look at Cato, and starts walking. You follow

Despite her being a bitch, Thank her. Being alone sucks dick.
>>

>>
>>42480765

>>
>>42480765
Ask about the leather foot-wear?

On a side note, is her being an outcast actually cause she's a pain in the ass, and nothing to do with her parents not being from the village? Don't ask her that obviously, just something to wonder.

Agriculture, pottery, sandals...this tribe is kicking our ass when it comes to neolithic technology. At this rate we're going to have to discover the uses of native copper if we're going to keep up. Assuming that native copper even exists, I'd assume that it would all get eaten by the Steel-type Pokemon.
>>
>>42480861
Combo. Though it's kinda a self fulfilling prophecy. It started with people not being as willing to accept her, then she got defensive and acted out. This made people less likely to accept her, and repeat until you get this.

It didn't help when her brother left.

>>42480902
Ayy, got it. I was going for a person good with Pokemon, but spends so little time with people that she's not sure how to act
>>
Btw, bows have been invented before the neolithic era, to whoever said they weren't last thread.
Not that you can't exactly decide that different technologies have been invented slightly earlier due to involvement of pokemon or whatever.
>>
>>42480937
I think we've got heads up on them in a few things. Our language skills seem superior, Cato was shocked we could read.
>>
>>42480937
Fairly certain our tribe had agriculture, or perhaps a high level of Husbandry, seemed to be mentions of Tropius.

And you're less likely to need footwear in our forest than you are up a snowy mountain.
>>
>>42481022
We managed to selectively breed Tropius for higher banana yields.
>>
>>42480765
"So, I was thinking that we should head south-west, towards Green River. More likely to run into people that way, maybe a trader that's seen my tribe. That okay with you?"
>>
>>42481022
>>42481056
Okay, so we've got pastoralism. That's pretty good, then.
>>
>>42481098
Now we just need some ponyta. (Ponytas? Is ponyta plural on its own? I don't think this is something that's ever been addressed.)
>>
>>42481281
Why ride a Ponyta? When you can ride a Mamoswine.

Because as a personal mount, horse > pachyderm. As a war platform pachyderm > horse but it's not like this era is conducive to large scale conflict anyway.

You stay silent for a while, focussing on the path before you. Random pieces of stone have been revealed by the passage of water and snow, threatening to trip you. Dire's fur blends into the dirt and mud track, almost mistakable as a stone from a distance.

After the silence grows too much to bear, you call back to her. "So, what's with the things on your feet?" Seriously, that's been bugging you for a while. Almost everyone wore some sort of covering in the village.

"...shoes? They keep your feet from getting hurt or cold." You can hear the raised eyebrow in her voice.

"Why do you need them? Why waste the materials?" As nice as Rosalia's tribe was to you, they didn't seem like the sort to waste good skins on something as tribal as foot coverings.

"Because our feet aren't made of stone, that's why." She sounds exasperated. Still doesn't make sense, but whatever.

You continue in silence, the earth slipping past in a seemingly endless series of switchbacks. You stop for water near noon, a waterfall formed by snowmelt cascading down a worn path of boulders. The spray has attracted a thick covering of mosses, ferns, and berry bushes

You grab a few of the berries off the plant, and continue on your way. From what you remember, they're Oran berries. Good for stews, marinades, and cuts. When their juice is put on a wound, it helps it heal a lot quicker and with less scarring.

The day passes quickly in the mountains, the sun setting by the time you reach a valley filled with wildflowers. Combee flit around the few trees that have taken root, carrying nectar back to their hives. It might be worth figuring out a way to get to the hive without getting stung, to get all the honeycomb in them.

Then steadily moving on to multiple bark coverings, lowering his odds of getting it by chance.

Shrugging off your backpack, you rummage around in the food pouch. Drawing some sweet berries from the bag, you whistle to Dire. The short Pokemon's head rises from beneath the flowers, floating in a sea of colors. Dirt drops from his mouth as he smells the berries, and he crosses the distance in leaps that barely take him above the flowers.

"Dire, look at the berries. You want the berries?" You're gonna take the fact that he's up on two feet trying to reach them as a yes. "Good boy. Down. Rosalia, can you hold Dire for a moment while I hid these?" Dire squirms in her arms, his legs beating the air.

You dig a small hole in the flowers, and place one in the dirt. You cover the treat, then repeat the process two more times. Wiping the dirt on your breeches, you walk back to Dire and Rosalia. Taking him from her arms, you lift the piglet up to eye level. "Get the berries, but don't eat them Dire. Understand?" He nods. Huh, didn't know he could do that. You let him have a small berry to reinforce the idea, and set him on the ground.

Dire shoots off like a rocket, weaving back and forth to catch the scent. He kicks up onto his hind legs, balancing precariously, and sniffs the air.

Dire leaps from his standing position, arcing gracefully through the air and running the instant his paws touch the ground. Dirt is thrown into the air, and Dire squeals with joy. Quickly, three berries are sitting at your feet, with only a few bite marks. You let Dire eat one of the berries, and pick up the other two. Rosalia lifts the small Pokemon up again, and you walk off much farther this time. Along the way you pick up a pair of rocks, and bury them much like the berries. This ought to stop him from just following your scent, and instead smelling for the berries underground.

Dire is set loose once more, and pauses as he searches the air for the scent of the berries. Tentatively, he follows one of the paths. Dirt down range, more than a stones throw away, is sprayed up by the hungry Pokemon.

Dire manages to find both of the berries, but only after digging up one of the stones. He's gonna need some more training before his sense of smell is fine tuned to sniff out predators, but it's a good start. Especially considering how overpowering the smell of wild flowers is.

War has changed

Returning to your backpack, you pull the tent from the bag. It's a simple design, a couple of wooden poles that fit together into a long, low tube, with wool stretched over the frame. You set it up quickly, with the opening facing where the fire will be. With practiced ease, you ignite a small ball of tinder and grow it into a crackling fire.

You pull some of the food from your pack, and lay it out on a piece of leather in front of your tent. Thick slabs of dried meat, strange pieces of flat bread as hard as rock, a handful of nuts and dried berries, and Suffolk cheese. All washed down with the warm leathery water from the waterskin. Yum.

As you worry away at a piece of the meat, you set to carving one of the Beedrill lances into a knife. The stone knapping kit you got allows you to remove chips of the Pokemon's blade, slowly forming a sharp edge on each side. You leave the tip of the stinger alone, as it's sharper than you could make it naturally. The base of the lance is carved down to fit your hand easily, lighter than a similarly sized flint blade.
>+1 Beedrill Dagger

"Rosalia, what're you planning? Like, I understand you wanted to leave, but what do you expect to come from this?" You ask, chipping your remaining stinger into a replacement spearhead. Beedrill spears were rare in your tribe, but when people managed to kill one or trade for them, they said it was easier to stab with them. The power of the Pokemon is infused in the weapon, and gives its user some of its strength. At least, that's what the shamans said.

"I do not know. I was hoping to find my brother, yet he spoke often of traveling beyond the seaError, Season 2 Spoilers. He's likely to have joined some tribe or the other by now. Perhaps add to my book? I would like to train a Pokemon of my own as well." Huh, you guess you understand that. What did you plan to do after reaching the mountains? It purely instinct that drove you from the forest, not rational thought.

"...Somewhat. Still, it is preferable over staying in one spot. Your tribe, how long did it stay in one place?"

"A week, sometimes a little more." Okay, got to give her that one. Hell, the hunters would often be in constant movement, following prey. "I get your point. Well, until I can find my tribe, we can move together. Me and Dire can help you get a Pokemon too, if that's what you want."

"Thank you. I'll consider that. Traveling with you has been...better than if I was on my own. How is it that you befriended your Swinub?" As she asks, Dire takes the opportunity to crawl over you and into the tent. Spinning round, he lies between your side and the wall of the tent.

You go into the story of how you and Dire met, including the part where you debated making him into a hat. While she doesn't take any notes, it seems like she's filing away the story to later.

"They don't seem to mind me being nearby. None will ever follow me home though. I'm not sure what it is." Rosalia says, trailing off at the end. gee, I wonder why?

"Well, when one does like you, what kind would you like?" You take a moment to pet Dire, a furry little ball of warmth stuck into your ribs. He's not what you expected, but damn if he isn't a great friend and Pokemon.

"Something new. Something that has never been seen before." The fire builds in her leaf green eyes, reflecting the fire red.

You nod, understanding the desire for adventure. Seeing the massive(600-800 pounds) Pokemon Dire is going to become was a moment that doesn't happen often. Seeing one in person would be mind blowing.

You roll over, and pull a tunic from the bag to serve as a pillow. With the fire, well made tent, and a furry little furnace at your side, you're not cold.

UNTIL THE FIRE NATION ATTACKED!

You wake up from a dreamless sleep, and yawn as the sun rises in your face. Note to self: face tent away from East. Grumbling slightly, you drag yourself out of the tent. Dire is already awake, sniffling around the camp for crumbs of food. You stand and go through a series of stretches, techniques taught to hunters so that they are always ready to move. With a note of dissatisfaction, you notice that your little vacation from the routine has left you unable to touch your toes.

You have a little time before you should start walking, what do you want to do?

You dress for the day, and grab onto your spear. You debate taking the sling, but since you have no experience with them, decide against it. It would only weigh you down and rattle as you walked.

"Dire, find a Pokemon for breakfast," you say to your friend, and place him back down. Sniffing the ground, Dire leads the way. With his head down, the only way to see him is the track he leaves in the flowers.

Minutes stretch as you walk behind the small pig. He leads you into the trees, and you notice two sets of tracks overlapping.

You decide to go after the lone Pokemon, and besides, it's tracks look slightly fresher.

Following the directions of Dire, and the tracks when they're visible, you gain on the Pokemon. It seems hampered by a weight, and moves slowly. In a few places, rocks have had pieces bitten off, along with a couple trees and shrubs.

About twenty minutes after you left the campsite, you spot your prey. A squat, tan Pokemon is mildly crunching at pieces of stone. It's beak transitions into a large rounded plate, crossed by two silvery ridges of bone.

You whisper a command to Dire, and leave him standing in the trees while you circle to the left of the beast. Slipping the thong from your wrist, you hold the spear with two hands.

The Pokemon crunches heavily on a protruding stone, pebbles falling from its beak as it chews. Arceus, do not get near the mouth. That thing could probably take your arm off with one bite.

You whistle, and Dire bursts from cover. Before the monster can turn its body, your Pokemon impacts it's side. The monster is almost double his size(and ten times his weight), but the speed and suprise cause the Swinub to knock the Pokemon back. Bouncing back, Dire watches as you run at the Shieldon.

Spear held with two hands, you stab into Dire's point of impact. The sharpened Beedrill stinger cuts through the pokemon's thick skin, and glances off a rib. You withdraw the spear, but not before a good three inches of it have tasted blood. Dire is circling the monster, but you doubt he'll be able to knock it off balance now that it knows it's coming. As for you, the Shieldon seems to recognize how dangerous the spear is, and turns to face you.

Backing off, you slide your grip down your spear. Holding it at the last two feet, you stab and slice at the Pokemon from a distance. Dire waits for you to circle the Pokemon around, before he runs at Tackles it from the side again.

The Pokemon grunts slightly from the impact, and slams it's hips into Dire. The furry Pokemon rolls back from the blow, whimpering slightly. With a cry of rage, you dive to the side and slide the blade along the pokemon's tan side. A line of reddish orange blood seeps from the long wound, thick muscle visible through it.

You draw your dagger, and hold it in a reverse grip. The off white blade shines slightly in the rising sun, freshly made and ready for use. Holding spear with your right hand, you switch to an overhead grip on the shaft.

Dire moves behind you, growling softly at the large armored Pokemon. With a feint to the left, you sprint to the monster's side. It's blunt head crest slams into your thigh, deadening the muscle. In retaliation, you stab your knife deep into its neck.

Holding tight to the cord wrapped handle, you jump and swing onto its back. Dropping your spear to the ground, you brace a forearm against the top of the Shieldon's crest. As you expected, the Pokemon attempts to hit you with the lip of its shield. Braced against the top, and a knife stabbing into its's muscle, however, allows you to hold it back. Barely.

With care, you line the point of the Beedrill blade up with the pokemon's neck. Releasing your hold on the crest, you hammer down at the handle with your closed fist. The blade sinks deep, slicing through a fatty hump of muscle, before lodging at the hilt in the wound. You twist it, and feel the blade grate off bone. Gonna have to give it a new edge now.

The Pokemon collapses under your weight, it's four legs splaying out comically. Pulling the blade from the Pokemon, you wipe it on some grass before placing it back in the sheath. Dire is laying off to the side, licking at his leg. You pull a Oran berry from a pouch, and cut pieces off for Dire to eat. Off in the distance, you can hear the familiar baying howls of Luxio.

Now, how to get this thing back to camp?

High-tech pokemon capture shit? Fuck no.

EXTREMELY RARE, like >>42489665

Honestly we're way too early in human development for that to be widespread enough to matter much.
>>
Good to know.

I was planning for them to look like they're made of polished wood(made from a nut after all) and copper. It would be explained as magic, and as people said, super rare.

I can see having a Pokemon that almost weighs a half ton getting annoying in some cases, so wanted to offer a way to keep Dire or any other Pokemon you befriend with you when you're sneaking or something.

I'm somewhat concerned no one mentioned the Pokemon in the OP, I though it would have people clamoring to catch an Axew
>>
>>42489879

We have adorable warthog solid snake.

some random Axew aint got shit on him.
>>
>>42489879
how about only people who have them are our nemesis and a crazy old shaman who gives us a tiny number of them?

also, nobody expected you to give us an axew.
>>
>>42489932
Hahaha this is an amazing answer.

Guys don't forget to up vote the thread in the archive
>>
>killing the shieldon
>not getting a cool companion
Dammit. At least we can get a shield/cooking pan
don't look at me like that, don't you want to go into battle smelling delicious
>>
>>42490066
Shieldon is terrible, Bastiodon is even worse
>>
>>42489879
Mate you wouldn't give an axew even if we clamor ex for it. Right? Shit we missed out on getting a dragon type didn't we? Would rather have a dratini though.
>>
>>42490265
Probably not. IF you guys had chosen the Dark Cave, then IF you journeyed deep into it, then IF you chose the right tracks, you could have gotten one, provided you didn't accidentally piss it off.
>>
>>42490549
Man. You suck. Dragons are best type yet you don want us to have one? Ughh quest dropped.

Nah it's fine. Just joking do not take me serious.
>>
Is there a way to see our Book of Monsters without going back to see in the first thread?
>>
>>42491832
Let's just ask him to list what we have in the next thread.
>>
>>42491936
Not him, but I think we should probably have a pastebin that OP updates every so often that has our Book of Beasts and at least what level of knowledge we have of each creature.
>>
>>42489879
I want a Deino or some ghost type, personally.
>>
>>42491967
He'll more than likely see this, if he doesn't I'll just say something about it in the next thread or Twitter or somethin'.
>>
>>42492101
We need the only true dragon charizard
>>
>>42492101
We'd have to hatch a Deino, OP said that dragons in general were a bitch to raise.
>>
>>42492140
I acknowledge that the chance of getting one is next to nil. Still, the deino line is cool.

An aerodactyl would be great too, tied with cradily as best fossil.
>>
>>42492177
I'm kinda fond of Tyrantrum myself, but aerodactyl and cradily are both awesome

I just hope we get a sandshrew. I like sandshrew.
>>
>>42492336
[historically accurate curse] yeah. Mental image of sandshrew/slash is much better than game version
>>
Wait a minute. Could we find primordial genesect?

Some sort of insect super-predator for certain.
>>
>>42492336
We should befriend an Onyx, and evolve it into a mother fucking Steeling. We could become an unstoppable warlord with such a beast
>>
>>42495378
Or a crystal onyx.
>>
>>42492137
He is not dragon. He is fire type
>>
>>42491967
I'll do that today and post a link on twitter.
