Eh, it can't be that weird geneology. They were Air Nomads, it's right there in the name that they wandered everywhere. I'm sure there are plenty of people with a little Air Nomad ancestry, even in the Fire Nation. Like Ty Lee, she always struck me as being part Air Nomad. Rounder face than other Fire Nation citizens, grey eyes, flighty personality, acrobatic talents, interested in spiritualism...it makes sense to me. There are probably others like her who just hide their ancestry to avoid the social stigma.

You sit at your table, mulling over what brought you on this path. The frigid glass in your hand conflicting with the arid heat of the Oasis. At least you found this place before the heat really got to you, between that spire you saw and the cactus dreams you were thinking you were toast. Why you even came to the desert you don't know, just following your feet you suppose. You've been doing that for a while, you left the orphanage when you were ten back in Omashu, well, leave might not be the right word. You were run out when you first started learning your "heritage", and you kept running since.

It seems like that was decades ago, and it was, 15 years to be exact. Today is always the day you celebrated your escape, closest to a birthday you have anyway, the mango drink took up your last silver piece, but it was definitely worth it. The map you bought will help get out of here and the walking stick you made will lead you to your next home.

You roll out the map and see a few locations that are of interest, the Oasis being your current position. Your breath steams out of your pipe as it normally does when you're thinking. People don't react well to seeing a guy breathe steam.

Ember Island seems as good a place as any, and who knows, maybe getting in touch with your people will be good for you. Besides, you hear they have a good theater, and you always considered yourself a thespian. You roll up the map, place it back in it's case and walk out the door, back into the barren wastes to get to the sea.

Your new toy you bought from the last Sand Sailer you met begins pointing North, they called it a lodestone, all you know is it works. Some Buzzard Wasps begin following you, but you quickly disperse them with a few flaming blasts. About a day in, you run into some Sandbenders also heading to the ocean, and they offer you a ride for directions to the port, which you readily provide. You finally hit a snag when you reach the town, called Port Inferno, a new Fire Nation colony.

You are out of money.

You begin by looking for any shady people, you've been to enough ports to know that when you get a bunch of sailors together, there's going to be a fight. Sure enough you follow some bruised people and find what appears to be a long hallway surrounded by bleachers filled with rowdy people. You decide that there are worse ways to make money and go to the booker.

"Hello, I would like to compete today. I just came from out of town and need some money."

"Wonderful, there are lockers in the back, please check in any weapons and fill out this form, I also need a name."

"My name is Kuo." You say as you hand over your walking stick, you just found it in the desert, so you aren't that attached. You keep the map and lodestone, as you don't know if you trust this place fully. Then you hand him the form.

"I can work with that. Says here your a Firebender, from "Parts Unknown"? Fair enough I guess"

You manage to settle the first few rounds rather handily with some focused blasts of steam at their extremeties, scalding most of your competitors. There is one, however, you didn't expect.

"LADIEEEES AND GENTLEMEN, COMING TO THE HALL THIS MOMENT, YOUR CHAMPION, THE PAINTED PAIN, MAE RESTER!"

The crowd goes wild as a man in terrible facepaint catapults in holding a rock. He makes a line across his throat with his thumb.

You decide that the crowds are here for a show so you're going to give them a show. Working up your best intimidating voice, you blow steam in the air while shouting.

"Girls don't belong in this fight, get a hair cut and take off your makeup then come back."

He seems visibly enraged and screams a shrill cry as he runs toward you at a surprising rate. Just as planned, but then, right as you shoot a column of flame down the hall, he jumps with an amazing strength. Then you notice his sandals are made of stone, a surprisingly clever idea. He jumps over you and a fierce battle begins.

You blow gouts of steam at him, he cartwheels away, he fires a rock at you, you dodge it. The fight goes on for a long time until he jumps over your back and gets you in a Full Nelson. He whispers in your ear.

"Great job man, now we need to clinch this to bring it home, do something fancy."

The only problem is you can't firebend with no arm movements.

You feel like this wasn't what you signed up for, but this is probably what it was, you don't read very much into stuff. So this is more of an act then, you can do that. You begin deeply breathing, feeling the heat from your gut rise to your throat and recede, growing more intense every time. Then you immediatly launch into the air, dispersing the pent-up steam from your arms. You careen into the air, keeping Mae with you. Then when you reach the zenith of the jump, you give him a whisper.

"Switch places."

In an instant, Mae realizes what you want to do and flips around you in a way that looks like you tossed him. You notice he's smiling all the way down, and as he is about to hit, the tiles explode into dust, almost as if they were supposed to. When the dust clears, you're on top of Mae Rester and the air is still with silence.

Then the crowd cheers.

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, TRUE TO HIS NAME, THE STEAMING STREET FIGHTER KUO, HAS BROKEN THE STATUS QUO! UNBELIEVABLE!"

After the congratulations and a bunch of handshakes, you go back and pick up your stick and the new 15 gold pieces from the booker.

"Kid, you've got potential, and I have a deal for you." You quickly turn around to see an aging man in a black robe with a strange symbol on it.

"I'm Kim Man and you just made me a lot of money, I'm looking for some people to add to my little operation, and you just did an amazing job. The pay is good, we travel a lot, and you get a free room. All you have to do is keep doing what you did out there." The man you now know as Kim is looking at you expectantly.

You are in luck, you see Mae without his facepaint, a huge guy in red clothing with a dragon mask on, and a rather rotund man in a parka with some kind of weird glasses on.

"I knows Cado, you need to use the fire breath, but I need make sure that new sand theys get me works!" The man in the parka, who you can work out is probably Jui, is yelling in what is the worst accent you've ever heard at the red behemoth.

The big man turns to you and booms in a rumbling voice, "Hey, this must be the new guy. I'm Cado, this is Jui, and I know you already met Mae."

Then the one you now guess is imitating a Waterbender turns to you, "Don't mind us, just practicing the accent."

You can't keep it back, "But that accent is horrible."

Mae pipes up,"That's the point. The crowd eats it up."

He laughs like a hyena-cat, "No, that was great! The girl comment was perfect."

You decide that your gift with steam might be helpful in a few situations, but it isn't visible enough to be flashy. Until you get a great idea.

"Hey Jui, I have an idea on how to make our fights look really cool. Come train with me."

The rotund man looks through his glasses at you and says in his horrible accent, "I am of beings the ready."

You follow a few signs to the mock arena set up in back with training dummies and begin working on blowing steam in different ways. You try it in streams, cones, you even give rings a shot. Then you cup your hands over your mouth and blow, the steam comes out streaked with fire causing the steam to look like a spray of light.

"Wow, that's pretty cool, but what does that have to do with me?" Jui seems rather baffled.

"Give me a minute, just chill." You can't see them but you're pretty sure his eyes just rolled.

You begin changing the spaces between your fingers and the effort you put into each stream, eventually finding a balance that starts out looking like fire, then becomes a cloud of steam. This is exactly what you needed, the first few times it just stays fire throughout, but eventually you get the spacing down.Now to actually use it.

You catch a glimpse of a faceless woman as the scene flashes, then you see an evanescent vision of a man with blue tattoos all over him.

But these visions cease, leaving your sight on a very obviously lost Fire Nation soldier walking in an endless fogbank.

You can feel Cado smile beneath the mask,"Maybe you can teach me how to do that thing you and Jui did yesterday. It'd revolutionize these fights."

You both walk to the Training Room while discussing how you each firebend, when you mention using your throat, he stops you. "Wait, I don't use my throat to bend my fire, I only use my stomach. Maybe that's the difference."

When you reach the Training Room, Cado rushes forward and gives steam a shot. He breathes deep you can see him working his muscles in the right order, up then down. He opens his mouth inside the mask and you see a light from inside. Then a single puff of smoke comes out of the mask and you hear coughing.

"Maybe... that wasn't it. But you tried to help me with it, so I'll give you a little trick." He starts spinning his slowly arms in a circle, drawing a line of fire in the air.

"My dad taught me this, when you use arcs and circles in your bending, the heat rises and the fire intensifies." The line turns blue,"Then you keep that up." The line turns white,"And then you let it fly!"

Cado releases the blast at the metal dummy and it turns it a bright red glow. You decide to give it a shot and Cado stands back. Your arms trace the circle, first slowly, then you catch a weird rhythm and pick up the speed.

"Whoah, Kuo, it isn't going to work like that."

You spin your arms even faster, this feels like this movement is in your blood, your soul, quickly shifting the circle through the colors to white, then eventually settling it at a light teal hue.

"Kuo, what..."

You let the blast fly at the dummy and the metal heats, then warps, then the metal dummy becomes a pile of slag.

"Kuo, don't use that in the ring. What the fuck dude."

"Um... I'm going to go check something..." Cado nods at you as you leave, still visibly shocked. You run back to the room, and realize that everyone else is gone, probably spending their paychecks. You decide to see what you just did, but more controlled this time, you hold out your hand and will flame from it, the colors burning through the flame up to white, but stopping there. It must have some relation to your arm movements. You snuff the flame and take out your map, searching for crescent-shaped islands in the Fire Nation. Sure enough, you find it, and it is coincidentally right next to Flame Point, your next stop.

There's something going on, your dreams aren't feeling like dreams, you remember them too well. You heard stories over your travels of old gurus who could briefly venture into the Spirit World, where time meant nothing. It might be a stretch, but if the shoe fits...

A knock echoes from the door,"Hey Kuo, your decent right? I want to talk to you." You stiffen up at the sound of Kim's voice, what's he going to say about the dummy?

"Yeah."

He opens the door,"So Kuo, I've been thinking, you've got the steam and stuff going for ya, but that won't cut it in the pros."

That's fun, maybe you can figure out a few tricks. Kim leaves shortly after, probably to do important things, and you focus on perfecting the steam idea. It takes a while, but you get it and the mirror shows you as a blurry blob in a halo of golden fog.

The merchant looks at you with concern on his face,"Burial Night is an annual event when you stay indoors and lay any problems you had in the past to rest. You, give the merchant a silver piece and walk back towards your "home". The walk back is deafeningly silent, without a word between you and Mae. You reach the doors and are greeted by an old woman.

"Hey Utaaq, can you take a look at our new friend Kuo here, he passed out last night. Oh, Kuo this is Utaaq, the resident healer." The lady gives you a warm smile and ushers you into the hall.

The lady takes no time poking and prodding you, mumbling to herself and bombarding you with questions about your former health.

"Drinking?", "No.", "What is your Mom's maiden name?", "No clue.", "How's your sex life?", "I don't feel comfortable with this."

She stops asking questions,"Your chi was temporarily shot through your Light Chakra."

"And that means?"

"A spirit or something like that didn't take a liking to you. I've seen very few cases of this, and only at notable hotspots like the Spirit Oasis or such."

"And this means for me?"

"As long as you can still distinguish reality from illusion you'll be fine."
