When you think about it in the proper context, the One Year War may have been waged on a pretext after all. To even consider the possibility that half of humanity had been eradicated on such a pretext turned your stomach at first, but over the years you've gradually come to accept it as fact. The original Universal Century Charter, the dark deal with the Vist family, the war itself, the subsequent failure of the Earth Federation to ever conclusively beat the Zeon stragglers, instead leaving them to survive and continue their insurrection? It's the only explanation that can make all of those things make sense.

The war wasn't between Spacenoids and Earthnoids, like students these days are probably being taught. That's a false dichotomy. It wasn't even really between Zeon and the Federation, either. In fact it predates both of those organizations. The true war is one that has always been waged, between those who believe in possibility and those who have too much invested in the old order to allow such believers to exist. It's the same age-old tension between progress and inertia that must have sickened all civilizations even in their ancient cradles on Earth. It led to the Resource Wars, to the formation of the Federation and to the colonization of space. The bigger more unified human civilization grew the more catastrophic its own internal struggles became, until the tension boiled over in the One Year War.

The greatest catastrophe in humanity's brief history, from which you're all still trying desperately to recover... just an excuse for tired old men and their ideologies to clash. But even after that tragedy has passed another conflict is being fought: this time over the shadowy, looming threat known as “Newtypes” which threaten the viability of the Federation government.

Or hell, maybe you're just drunk. Maybe that 'clarity' you perceive is just the whiskey talking, but damned if it doesn't make a persuasive argument.

“Well, what do you think?” Carrina muses quietly from her chair next to yours. “You had enough yet?”

>Humanity's still not ready to hear the truth. There are still too many competing narratives to latch onto, and too many people desperate to lay blame.
>Some of us will listen to reason, and that will have to suffice. Ultimately each will have to choose their own fate, which is the way it should be.
>There are only a few who will refuse the truth: those following Bernini and Paptimus. If we break that resistance, the rest of humanity will be free to listen.
>We call them out publicly, engage both their ideologies and elite forces simultaneously. That's how we find the total victory we need right now.

We aren't so idealistic to think we can fix things just by our actions, but nor are we so cynical to think they can't be changed at all. Humanity is a constant upward climb, and every little bit counts.

“Nah,” you sigh. “I can still feel my face.”

“That's not what I mean and you know it.”

You're forced to simply shrug. “I think some of us will listen, and that's all we could ever hope to achieve. After all, humanity has free will. It's almost inevitable that some will choose self-destruction over change.”

“So you're writing those people off?” Carrina asks quizzically, unused to hearing such resignation coming from you.

“I think we have to,” you admit. “We can't save everyone.”

She nods, before getting up out of her chair and heading towards the door. “Shall I see the Captain? Arrange for a full broadcast of all the information we've gathered?”

You ponder the question for a few long, tense moments. Full disclosure could mean massive unrest within the Federation, but at the same time telling the truth would put all public attention on your own team's future actions. You'd have made yourselves the only ones who have told things how they really are, and probably gained an even greater degree of public support. There'd be naysayers of course, but that's something you could probably handle.

The real question is how the Jovian and Mars factions would respond...
>Release it all. The human race can't choose its own fate without full awareness.
>Release the data on the Federation Charter. That ought to shake things up enough.
>Release the climate and agricultural data. Maybe a common threat will encourage cooperation.

I was half-considering killing this quest, actually. In that eventuality I'd have started refining a Super Robot Wars-style quest where a few of the characters and machines here would show up, partly to finish off the story.

I decided to see how the next couple of threads worked out though before doing something like that.
>>
>>42624784
>Release the climate and agricultural data. Maybe a common threat will encourage cooperation.
We don't really have any data on the Federation Charter. Most of what we have is just "this hidden thing exists", we don't know what that hidden thing is. It wouldn't have the impact we want, to just release the knowledge that something is being covered up. And honestly, from an OOC standpoint, what is being covered up isn't actually that important. It was just one little, mostly inconsequential clause that a crazy person killed his father to prevent from being in the official document. At this point the fact that something was kept from the public is a bigger scandal than what actually was in the charter.
>>
>>42624784
>>Release it all. The human race can't choose its own fate without full awareness.
The Federation, the Principality, The Titansand the Vist foundation all tried to controll humanity trough information, wathever the future may hold we will not let it be controlled by the powerfull few alone

>>
>tie detected, crafty writing applied
>>
>>42625163
It only does if you don't reveal everything. If you don't tell the actual missing clause of the charter, then it makes the Federation look super corrupt. If you do, then while the Federation still looks corrupt, it also makes it clear that Zeon's actions were in no way supported by the Federation charter and they were, in fact, still huge douches.
>>
>>42625251
We basically hold the inheritance of zeon in our hands anyway, ideologically we could crush zeon ideological support with the princess's speaking on the matter in consensus.
>>
>>42624784
“Let's forget about the Charter,” you suggest. “Really, what does knowing that accomplish? So the current Federation government is a farce set up by ultra right-wing Earth supremacists. We always knew they were scum anyway, so let them consign themselves to irrelevance.”

“That's...” Carrina muses quietly to herself. “I'm not sure I agree. I may sound a little too much like Zeon Zum Deikun when I say this, but it may be best to wipe the ideological board clean.”

“You think so?”

Your Newtype partner nods thoughtfully. “And I know I'm not the only one who thinks so. You know that too.”

True, Haman and Artesia would probably both want the information revealed as well. But speaking of Zeon princesses, that just raises another issue in your mind that Carrina seems to immediately take note of.

“Something wrong?”

You nod. “Doesn't that kind of mean that the Zabis had a fair point?”

“Even a broken clock is right twice a day,” Carrina recites at you in response.

“Unless it's so broken it's missing a hand,” you observe. “Then it's just disconnected from reality. Kind of like the bloody Zabis.”

“Agreed,” Carrina nods, noting the logic behind your open mockery of the notion that the Zabis could ever be right about something deliberately. “But most people have seen what an approach like that of the Zabis will get us, and any rational person would want to avoid experiencing that sort of suffering again.”

“Paptimus and Bernini are rational too,” you counter. “Their goals are just different from ours.”

Carrina shakes her head. “So I guess that just means we'll have to come up with a good plan to kill them, then. Shall I ask the bridge to release all the information, or not?”

For a few long moments you remain in silent thought. The memory of Titans greets you, the way they suppressed dissent and controlled information to promote themselves and secure their base of power. The way they sought to control you and all other Newtypes by weaponizing them. Does complicity in this long-held lie about the origins of the Federation make you just as bad as them?

No, it doesn't... but it's entirely too close for comfort.

“Do it,” you order, and Carrina gives you a grin before making for the bridge.

I'm just not sure it's viable to release data on the Charter. We don't have any proof, here. All we have is the word of one of the main conspirators, and it's not like we can verify that. I'm worried it will be too easily dismissed and covered up again.

“ALICE,” you announce to the room around you, knowing that the AI was always listening in even if she wasn't paying you direct attention.

Her response is predictably instantaneous. “Yes, sir?”

“I want you to schedule a shipwide readiness drill at 19:00 tonight,” you order. “Get Karen to approve it for me.”

“Anything else I can do for you, sir? I AM capable of processing over one hundred and fifty Command-priority tasks simultaneously.”

You nod. “There is. Put through a secure call to Cima Garahau.”

“Of course, sir.”

Patching through a genuinely secure long-range transmission takes several minutes, and when it finally connects ALICE warns you that a dust cloud between you and the receiving station may cause some interference.

“I take it this isn't a social call?” Cima greets you rather playfully.

You lean forward over your desk, resting lightly on your arms before responding. “Sorry, wish it could be.”

“Flatterer,” she accuses. “So, what is it?”

“Well,” you find yourself frowning, “I wanted to give you advance warning about a little broadcast of mine.”

“You're finally going public with the agricultural projections?” she asks, suddenly sitting up straighter in her own tiger-skin-clad chair. “That certainly is a surprise.”

You shake your head. “It's not just that.”

It takes only a few moments to explain why you're telling the whole human race that the world government is a sham, and it doesn't do much to convince yourself that it's the right thing to do. To her credit Cima waits quietly for you to finish speaking.

“I'll be ready to make sure the Republic's hawks don't ruin everything,” she states simply. “But think you're doing the right thing, even if you don't seem to agree.”

“It was that obvious?”

“Painfully so. I know that look in your eyes.”

You decide to change the subject before you both dwell on Cima's past for too long.

“So how about you and me go on a date?” you suddenly ask. “I was thinking a nice trip out to Axis to see the sights.”

“Actually, I was already planning to be in the neighborhood,” she tells you cheerfully. “I also have something planned for you, young man... it's going to be one hell of a show.”

Something about the way she phrased that causes a twinge of worry.

“ALICE, please put through a call to Amuro Ray for me.”

“Of course, sir.”

A few minutes later you're welcomed by a much cleaner-looking image of a tired Amuro Ray.

“Did I wake you up or something?” you ask curiously.

He yawns. “They had me on a night shift, but it's no big deal. Why're you calling me?”

“Turn to the news,” you suggest. “You'll see pretty quick.”

After watching the broadcast in stunned silence, Amuro finally manages to find his words. “So, I guess you went and did it?”

“Did what?”

“You've finished Zeon's job for them,” he stares at you, and you can hear a tone of accusation.

“Think about it, Amuro,” you insist. “You heard what Haman and Artesia were saying, didn't you? They're completely right. Fault lies with the extremist camps in both Zeon and the Federation for lying to their people, for guiding them into the war for their own benefit, and among the people for embracing those lies out of their own fear and mistrust.”

“We all got ourselves into this mess, and we all share the burden of getting ourselves out. That's the truth, and the whole human race needed to hear it.”

Amuro shakes his head. “And Zeon will claim that they were right.”

“Doesn't mean anyone will listen,” you counter. “We made it clear that Zeon didn't know that the Federation was as corrupt as it was, that their decisions were as solely self-interested as anyone else involved.”

After a heavy sigh, Amuro seemingly admits defeat. “I never took you for an ideologue.”

“Only when it comes to ousting other ideologues.”

I want to know what's he up to and i dunno, make sure he doesn't go insane and start dropping asteroids on earth.
>>
>>42628422
He wouldn't have to do much. Axis is already coming to Earth orbit, he'd just have to stop its deceleration a little bit and it will hit.
>>
>>42628224
“You wanna talk to Char?” you ask. “You don't have to answer.”

“Sure,” he sighs. “May as well.”

“You know what name he's going by these days?”

Amuro shakes his head and admits he doesn't, and that he hasn't heard from his old rival for quite a while. The fact that he's gone silent like this leaves you both nervous that perhaps he's considering some extreme measure like dropping a colony on something.

We can move onto hacking if he doesn't want to talk...

"Hey Char? We're going to expose Federation corruption and then go kill high-ranking Zeon officials. And I know you're into that. Want to come?"
>>
>>42628469
>Hack some satellites, see if that interests him.
Figured that after we got to Voight, the Grim Guard would've had the chance to unravel that communications array he's been using.
Thought it might help in getting a fix on that.

"ALICE? Any suggestions?"

There's a momentary pause. "My default solution would be electronic intrusion on a massive scale."

You thought as much. "How about you, Amuro?"

He shrugs. "Why ask me? I never made a habit of visiting brothels."

"I guess you'll have to just send out a general message then, ALICE," you sigh. "Hey, Char? This is Captain O'Hara, we need to talk, buddy. Contact my ship so we can coordinate our efforts."

ALICE broadcasts the message, and then re-broadcasts it five minutes later. All you get in response is a message from a nearby cargo hauler telling you to stop spamming their comms.

"ALICE, kindly do your thing and open a communique across all civilian and military frequencies."

After a moment, ALICE responds. "Done."

"That was fast," Amuro comments, clearly impressed.

"I left an entry the last time I hacked very satellite in the Earth Sphere," ALICE tells him, and you can hear a distinct note of pride in her synthetic voice.

"Alright, Char. If you don't contact me in the next sixty seconds I start telling the entire Earth Sphere every embarrassing little thing from your childhood, one story at a time," you threaten. "Starting with that time you were twelve, and you..."

"Captain," ALICE interrupts. "I am receiving a high-priority message, sender is unknown. Origin is unknown."

"Well then," you reply. "Sorry, everyone. Another time, maybe."

ALICE's avatar nods to you. "You are on a secure channel."

"You. Dick." Char glares at you, clearly angered.

You shrug. "You were ignoring me. I don't like being ignored, Casval."

"What do you want from me now?" he asks tersely.

>I need to know how you plan to fight in a week or so.
>I want to know where you are.
>I thought you and Amuro might want to talk again before it's all over.
>Your sister and I made hot, passionate love together. How DOES that make you feel?

That last one's a joke, unless you especially want to taunt Char for some reason.

I just assured the Federation’s downfall, and we're about to crush the remnants of Zeon. I want to make sure we're on the same page, what are everyone's goals are, and that we're coordinating correctly. One small mistake and Axis crashes into Earth.

Good ol' Char trolling, how I've missed you. You don't get to see it happen in the other Gundam quests.

Several things really; your opinion on the information we released, where you stand in this clusterfuck of a situation and I thought that we could all get our grudges and ill will aired and sorted. After all, Nobody wins if we end up in a free-for-all in the bowels of Axis as it crashes down towards earth...

“We need to start working together here, Casval,” you tell your old target for abuse, again using his given name. That seems to put him distinctly off balance. “I don't think that the Jovians or Mars Zeon are going to give up quietly.”

“Nor did I take you for the type to do nothing at a time like this, Char,” Amuro adds. “What exactly have you been doing all this time?”

Char looks at you skeptically, before giving you a half-answer. “The same sort of machinations your friend the Captain here has.”

I'm going to assume that means saving humanity, both Earthnoids and Spacenoids. And Earth if possible since we're still reliant on her.

We each still need to spell out what we plan to do, to make sure we don't trip over each other.

So Char has been developing an OP Newtype Mobile Suit and strengthening the bonds with his Newtype crew... Does Char have a Newtype crew or is that exclusive to Amuro, Us and Papa Smurf?

What, Char pulls of his mask and revelas he's really Papsmear in a 'It was me, Dio!' moment?

He and our sister also got drunk and had sex. Which was really weird for her the next morning, because if I remember correctly she's gay.

"So that could be taken in a number of ways," you admit. "Not all of them necessarily useful or relevant, so you'll have to be clearer."

"You've been working on a Psychoframe," he continues. "Pezun inherited Titans' efforts on that front, and they needed a pilot for it."

You suppose it makes sense that the Titans would have a back-up development site, and that Tachibana would be in a good position to lay claim to it. But for what purpose?

Amuro is the first to voice your concerns. "And why exactly did Pezun need such a thing?"

"As a deterrent, I believe," Char explains. "Though I will admit, I have been having a few wicked thoughts about what I might accomplish with such a weapon at my hands."

"Working together, we may just be able to make a clean sweep," you suggest. "Or were you thinking a different sort of wickedness?"

"The latter," Char admits. "Though now I am unsure... and I'm also concerned what machinations you have begun aside from the Psychoframe."

I vote against being a dick about our activities with Artesia. It would be inconsiderate to her.

"Tell us about it," you suggest. "We'll share notes, and you can decide what kind of world you want to create."

Char seems to think quietly to himself for a few moments before coming to a decision. "Come to Pezun, and we will plan the assault on Axis together. At this point you do not need to know of my alternative... it would no longer have meaning anyway, in light of what I've heard today."

He then abruptly terminates the call, leaving you alone with Amuro and ALICE's images on your screen.

"That was unusual," Amuro frowns, seemingly perplexed. "Out of character, I mean... I've never known Char to give up on a scheme before."

"Well," you admit, "it seems like a rational enough step to take. I guess I'll ask Karen to change course."

"You didn't tell him about his sister," Amuro observes. "I'd imagined you would, just to rile him up."

"No need," you sigh. "He'll find out sooner or later."

And that's all I have planned for tonight, as the major players have taken to the field. I'll be back next Sunday for the planning phase and opening shots of the final battle, so look forward to that.

Archive is up, and thanks for turning out!

Still not used to the whole schedule here.

>>42631217
Glad there's still an audience. It's a good kinda feel.
