Goku stops, the pieces finally falling into place for him. "Then... you did that for..." Your friend sighs and slouches a little. "You... wow, I don't really know what to say..."

"Told you to not let your guard down." you tell him with a bit of a faked pout on your face.

Your conversation is interrupted by Nam, who starts healing your hand. Looks like you didn't have to worry about him trying something like Ginger did, at least. When it's all healed, Tien approaches you both. "Seems we'll be starting soon. I'm not going to back down from this, Maple. You better not disappoint me." the triclops tells you with a bit of a haughty smirk.

Tien seems like he's ready for you, he's not going to be holding back here. Well neither are you! The two of you lunge at each other, Tien's first strike barely missing your head as you duck under it. You grab on to his arm and strike him in the gut, then follow through by throwing him to the ground. Before he has time to get up, you pop out your Spirit Bits, a little Lightning added to give it that extra kick, and continue with your attack. Tien tries for his Machinegun punch, but you stop him right as he's about to strike with a few blasts from the Spirit Bits, stunning him in place and letting you throw out a Machinegun punch of your own!

Tien falls backwards as your Spirit Bits start to pummel him alongside you, an elbow to the chest sending him down hard. To his credit, though, Tien's able to get up from that fairly quickly, grinning wide at you. "Th-that was a good one... heh, guess there's no need to hold anything back now." He stands tall, his aura flaring up, and then becoming a blazing red color. "KAIO-KEN!"

Okay, so, here's what I'm thinking: Goku has a naturally higher power level than we do, and that's probably always going to be the case. This is the point where it's likely to matter most for a while now, since this will at least be the last world tournament we participate in for the next three years. We can't close the power gap completely, so we need to adapt in a way that he can't immediately counter.

We need to be able to withstand Kaio-ken without being in it ourselves, at least for a short time. If we can do that, we should be able to at least wear him out before we run out of steam. Kaio-ken takes a lot out of its user, relatively quickly. Even forcing him to use it more often than we do could work for us.

So, with that said, I say we defend for now. Let Tien wear himself out, while gauging whether or not we actually CAN weather something like this in our base form. If not, Kaio-ken him right back. If we can, wearing Goku down like this might be a viable option once we fight him.

Tien's stronger than you are now. That's for sure. However... "RAIO-KEN!" You're faster. Tien bursts forth at you, putting a LOT of power into his attacks. The problem for him is, however, he just can't hit you. You start charging up an attack, moving out of the way of a Dodonpa, using your Telekinesis to keep up your skillful dodging.

"Unbelievable, ladies and gentlemen! Sparks are literally flying as this match kicks things up a notch! Tien's putting a lot of strength on display here, but he just can't seem to keep up with Maple's incredible speed! Our cameras can't even follow this!"

Tien's frustrated at his poor performance, but right as he tries to match your speed with a Raio-ken of his own, you get a flash of foresight, your charge reaching full right in the nick of time as you fire your blast point blank at Tien, doing some serious damage and stunning him in the process. He's down on one knee, trying to shake it off, but he's completely vulnerable now...

That's a clever technique if you've ever seen one. But that looks like it'll take too much out of him to continue... and you're still at close to full strength! You combine the Kaio-ken x3 with the Raio-ken and let out a mighty roar, taking to the sky just in time for the four Tiens to end up crashing into each other as they try to take you down. They all look up, which is exactly what you wanted them to do. "SOLAR FLARE!"

The four opponents let out cries of pain, covering their faces. You bolt to the ground, CLOTHES BEAMing a ribbon around them all and getting them into one tight group, and without time to even react, you dash in front of them, firing a point-blank Phantom Shotgun at them all. The four Tiens fly out of the ring, each one landing at the wall to the side of it, clearly completely exhausted. You smile, and do a little victory pose.

"Tien, all four of them, are out of bounds! Maple Mahogany will advance to the next round!"

Launch, Chi-chi, and Nam hurry over to Tien, with him managing to return to one person. They heal his injuries, but Tien's still clearly worn out. Still, he looks up, smiling wide. "You gave me your best, and didn't hold back. I thank you, Maple. Now I know just how much harder I'll have to train."

The two of you flash a thumb's up, to the crowd's cheers. As you all walk back, Goku is smiling wide at you both. "Awesome! That was amazing! You guys were great, really!"

Tien smiles and nods. "And I'll keep improving."

As you all start walking into the waiting area, you turn to Goku. "Uh... say, monkey boy... want to make another wager, for tomorrow?"

That catches his curiosity. "In addition to dinner?"

You nod. "If you win, I'll teach you something else in addition to the telepathy we're working on. If I win..." Your face goes red again and you coyly tap the ground with your foot. Your student manages to stop herself in midair and floats back, only for Giran's fist to land right in her face. He laughs, believing her helpless... but when he pulls his fist back to reveal a... less than happy redhead glaring at him, he shrinks back. That didn't really hurt her. Before Giran can respond, she dropkicks him in the gut, Giran going down hard. The count doesn't even really need to happen, it's clear he won't be getting up any time soon.

I kinda like the current system. There's still the risk of critfails, but it can be mitigated if you still pass the DC. Likewise, it can also give an opponent a chance to come back if you succeed but also roll a 1.

I get that critfails can be annoying, but I think the fight with Tien just now pretty nicely demonstrates how the system can work really well. It made for a really tense, back and forth fight that felt a lot like how DB fights tend to go.

She sinks back, a little embarrassed, when suddenly...

Krillin, Lapis, and Lazuli aren't back yet, but everyone else seem to be enjoying themselves. Tien, Tao, Chiaotzu, and Launch are talking amongst themselves, Roshi, the Ox King, Chi-chi, and your brother are discussing things together, Chuu Lee is sitting with you, quietly trying to enjoy her meal, though growing increasingly worried by the number of plates that Goku, adjacent to you, and Yajirobe, across the way, are clearing through. It's less than usual, but... boy are they hungry. Trip has already eaten her fill, and is merely making conversation now.

Krillin's group should be back tomorrow morning. Next up... you turn to Chuu Lee. "So, how do you think about the Tournament? Have you been having fun, learning a lot?"

She nods respectfully. "I guess I have been getting a bit overconfident about this, though. Sorry about earlier, Master."

"Hey, most opponents we've faced before have been stronger than us. While I know it's tough sometimes, you have to try hard to not underestimate opponents that aren't as strong as you are." She nods again, a wide smile on her face. The sound of chomping is starting to get distracting, so... best to try to get Goku to stop stuffing his face, if for just a little bit. "Monkey boy, how about you? I know you probably have some kind of plan to beat me this time around, but what do you think about Chuu Lee, or Garlic Jr.?"

Goku stops for a moment, placing his food down and contemplating things. He then realizes what you're trying to ask by including your student in there, and starts with her first. "Well... Chuu Lee, you're a really good fighter, especially with how far you've come. But I won't be holding back in a real fight, and I can do a lot more than you can. I'm stronger, faster, and have been fighting for a deal longer. But... I'd have to be most cautious about your Wind magic, though. That's some tricky stuff. Maple's beaten me by using hers skillfully before."

You know, I'm kind of okay with Chuu Lee not winning another enemy she really has no business beating at this point.

Don't get me wrong, I like her, but I feel like she shouldn't be able to hold her own against the same sorts of things our A-list guys can; in time, sure, but at this point, she's kind of gotten unrealistically strong in relatively little time. It either makes Maple look like a way better teacher than someone her age really should be, or it makes Chuu Lee look like a prodigy the likes of which don't even make sense.

So yeah. I like Chuu Lee, but she's kind of gotten out of control in terms of her power. A couple months ago, she could barely win against Lapis or Lazuli. Now, she's beating the same kinds of opponents that we have to be called in for. Maybe dial her back a little or limit her successes until she's gained a more reasonable amount of experience.

That said I think she CAN win this if she uses his overconfidence against him. Get him close to the edge of the ring somehow and give the biggest Wind Blast she has at him.

I think Maple's teaching ability has been oversold a bit, but that's not really that big a deal. A lot of that has to do with Chuu Lee being naturally good at ki things.

As long as her inexperience and lack of real power compared to the main fighters is actually demonstrated (which, to an extent, is up to the dice), then it's fine. It's just something that's worth mentioning, especially since Kato asked last thread what criticisms people had for her characters. This was mine.

Also, as for her being able to beat Garlic Jr., you're right that she probably could, if she played to his weaknesses, but then that would make for a much less interesting finals match.

But thats whats been going on anon. She's been getting overconfident, almost lost to Giran cause she was toying with him, and was lectured by Maple afterwards. Its showing, its there. She's just been lucky to fight weaker opponents than her up until now. Lazuli was the only one that came close.
