You are Commander Sonali Vasusena, N7 and Humanity’s Newest Spectre. It’s February 4th, 2184 and after being appointed Spectre and holding an impromptu press conference where you ingratiated yourself with practically every alien race, you are handling choosing a ship, gathering a team and procuring supplies. Not necessarily in that order of course, seeing as you just recruited two mercs to fill out your Heavy Weapons and Support spots on your squads and didn’t have a place to tell them to bring their stuff.
_

“I’ll get back to you on that,” you say with a somewhat sheepish smile.

Jaro, the Amazon, and Cath, the Polymath, exchange looks of worry, but accept your answer and head off to gather their equipment and handle some affairs.

You can FEEL Leo’s amusement as the two of you leave the bar. He’s laughing, you just know it. Briefly, the temptation to punch the smug bastard in the face fills you, but you let it go as you clamber into the taxi. Maybe later.

“So,” Leo asks as he relaxes into his seat. “Where to now?”

”Let’s pick a Ship,” you declare.

“Glad to see you’re learning from your mistakes,” Leo says cheekily as he enters the destination into the navcomputer.

You punch him.

One of Udina’s Aides greets you as you return to the Embassy and provides you with a data file when you ask about ships, explaining that Udina left it for you when you returned.

Sitting down on one of the comfy chairs in the Embassy’s Lounge, you load the file on your Omni-tool.

>Ships:
>>
>>42726400

>Name: [Unnamed]
>Model: Dagger-Class Corvette
>Length: 55 Meters
>Required Crew: 1 Pilot, 1 Engineer
>Life Support Capacity: 10 Adult Humans (Varies slightly for Other Species)
>Drive Core: Ixion [Enormous Power Output, but requires specialized power systems to compensate.]
>Propulsion: Atalanta-Class Antiproton Engines [Standard on Light Craft, Very Fast]
>Primary Armaments: Twin Stinger-Class Mass Accelerator Cannons [Super Light Cannons, Short Range, Rapid-Fire]
>Armor: Korin Ablative Armor [Standard Light Craft Armor, Very Weak]
>Shields: Svalinn-Class Kinetic Barriers [Standard Heavy Cruiser Shields, Strong]
>Special: [Stealth System], [Heavy Power Array]
>Description: The Dagger-Class Corvette is a wholly experimental design that was deemed a failure as soon as it was finished. It would have been scrapped but the issue lay in the fact the tiny ship, intended as a cheaper alternative to the now famous Normandy-Class, is exorbitantly expensive. This is largely due in part to the experimental Ixion Drive Core, which cost a truly massive amount of time and resources to manufacture. Add in the anemic armaments and the overall result is a tough, fast ship with minimal offensive capabilities. The craft is small enough to land on planets and has minimal cargo space.

>[Cont.]
>>
>>42726417

>Name: [Unnamed]
>Model: Katana-Class Heavy Frigate
>Length: 200 Meters
>Required Crew: 1 Pilot, 2 Engineers
>Life Support Capacity: 50 Adult Humans (Varies slightly for Other Species)
>Drive Core: Sisyphus-II [Above Standard Power Output]
>Propulsion: Hermes-Class Antiproton Engines [Standard for Frigates, Fast]
>Primary Armament: Pike-Class Spinal Mass Accelerator [Heavy Cannon, Medium Range]
>Secondary Armament: Archer-Class Missile Pods [Standard for Destroyers, Variable Loadouts]
>Armor: Tarnhelm Heavy Armor [Standard Destroyer Armor, Moderate]
>Shields: Aegis-Class Kinetic Barriers [Standard Destroyer Shields, Moderate]
>Special: [EMPTY], [EMPTY]
>Other: GARDIAN Laser Array
>Description: The Katana-Class Frigate is an experimental design that was also failed by the Alliance, but for technical issues. The intended role for the Katana is a tough, modular ship that is useful in a variety of situations. As such, it is capable of easily installing and switching several different systems for use in the field while carrying some heavy firepower and defenses. The issue lies in the fact that the Sisyphus-II Drive core cannot meet the Ship’s power needs which results in complex power juggling in combat situations and expensive maintenance. It carries a shuttle for Planetary landings and has moderate cargo space.
>>
>>42726435

>Name: [Unnamed]
>Model: Rubicon-Class Medium Frigate
>Length: 120 Meters
>Required Crew: 1 Pilot, 1 Engineer
>Life Support Capacity: 30 Adult Humans (Varies slightly for Other Species)
>Drive Core: Tantalus [High Power Output]
>Propulsion: Huginn-Class Antiproton Engines [Special Engines, Very Fast]
>Primary Armament: Glaive-Class Spinal Rotary Mass Accelerator [Light Cannon, Medium Range, Three-Round Bursts]
>Secondary Armament: Longbow-Class Missile Pods [Standard for Frigates, Variable Loadouts]
>Armor: Korin Ablative Armor [Standard Frigate Armor, Weak]
>Shields: Tower-Class Kinetic Barriers [Standard Frigate Shields, Weak]
>Special: [Stealth System]
>Other: GARDIAN Laser Array
>Description: The Rubicon-Class is a variant of the Normandy class that was developed by a Team of Interns at Alliance R&D. Constructed using the main body of a Normandy frigate, the main changes are the replacement of the Main Cannon and Engines. The Prototype was finished a few weeks ago and was originally slated for Special Forces use, but the Interns in question requested that it be given to you about an hour ago. It has moderate cargo space and is currently assigned an M28 Mako.

>>42726456

>Name: MSV Valkyrie
>Model: Unknown (Corvette?)
>Length: 80 Meters
>Required Crew: 1 Pilot, 1 Engineer
>Life Support Capacity: 20 Adult Humans (Varies slightly for Other Species)
>Drive Core: Unknown [Special Drive Core]
>Propulsion: Unknown [Special Engines, Very Fast]
>Primary Armament: Unknown Mass Driver [Special, Capable of Standard Fire as well as a Charged Shot that can rival the Main Cannon of a Cruiser at the cost of depleting Shields]
>Armor: Unknown [Special Armor, Weak]
>Shields: Unknown [Special Shields, Weak]
>Special: [Advanced Stealth System]
>Other: GARDIAN Laser Array
>Description: The MSV Valkyrie comes with a rather odd story. During her Hunt for Saren, Commander Shepard dealt with a terrorist organization known as Cerberus. She took out several of their installations and provided any info she obtained to the Alliance, who sent out strike teams to other facilities. The Valkyrie was found partially constructed in a Cerberus drydock and immediately seized. Alliance R&D has found that practically every component used in its construction is a customized part, and carries some extremely advanced technology. R&D believes it have learned all that it can from the vessel and has turned it over to requisitions. It’s a ship with overall above average capabilities for its class along with some Heavy Firepower. It has limited cargo space.

The Rubicon is also somewhat modular and most likely easier to repair since it's not all custom. And we can name it.
>>

>>
>>42726555

Oh yea, thats a good point. Gonna be hard to repair.
>>
>>42726501
>Rubicon-Class
I'll be boring and vote for another Normandy. The Valkyrie interests me, but I don't like having low armor and shields and limited weapons.

Plus Rubicon comes with a Mako. Can't not vote for the Mako.
>>
>>42726501
Torn between the Rubicon and Valkyrie. On one hand the Rubicon seems like a great ship that does decent in all aspects not to mention the slightly increased crew capacity. Despite the Valkyrie being a fast yet weakly armored corvette, I'm guessing the advanced stealth systems could make it good for gorilla warfare. Does it have any way to reach the planet surface OP?
>>
>>42726577
The Valk at anyrate, the Rubicon is based on the Normandy and prolly has some standardization.
>>
>>42726456
My vote is for the Rubicon. My worry re: MSV Valkyrie is that repairing it will be a fucking bitch and a half if necessary, and we don't know what kind of issues it's got.
>>
>>42726587

>As a Corvette it is perfectly capable of landing
>>
>>42726587
I think thats the dang problem with it. Plus the Valkyrie is a Cerebus inhouse special. Any repairs will take ages as everything has to be manufactured to exact specs. She's a beauty but if she ever takes a banging we'll be out of a ship for potentially months.

Otherwise she's like a heavily armed Normandy V2 that makes me feel giddy inside.
>>
>>42726620
Actually, that's a potential issue. The Rubicon does not appear to have a Kodiak assigned.
>>
>>42726570

>>
>>42726582

Thats the thing isnt it. The Normandy was basically perfect for the needs of a spectre. Stealthy, packs some punch and can carry a good amount of cargo when needed to evac groups. Bit hard to deviate from that standard to another one that excels in another area but is deficient in another.
>>
>>42726654

Looking through the ships, you find yourself fixating on the Rubicon and the Valkyrie. Both have big plusses, stealth being the primary one, but you like the Rubicon more. If it’s based on the Normandy-Class then it’s probably going to be pretty damn good and the layout should be pretty easy to work with. Nodding to yourself, you make the selection and the program indicates that the ship is berthed at Dock 122 out of the C-Sec Academy.

“So,” Leo says as he approaches you with a coffee in hand. “What’d you pick?”

“Something from R&D, a variant of the Normandy,” You say as you stand up. “Seemed like the best choice.”

Leo grins, “Lets go see her then.”
_

The as yet unnamed ship is a steel grey with orange highlights on its swept back engines and another orange stripe running partway along its hull. The Main chassis is really similar to the Normandy’s but the winglike engines are a completely different affair. It’s interesting to see really, and you’re itching to see it in action.

Leo whistles, “She’s awfully pretty huh? What are you going to name her?”

“How’s Nakshatra sound?” You ask Leo.

He blinks in confusion, “I… don’t know what that is.”

You think back to some of the books you’ve read, some on Hindu culture. You didn’t get much exposure to it growing up, but you learned more quite a bit later. There was one about Nakshatras, or star signs. It had taken some doing, seeing as you weren’t born on Earth, but you found that your Nakshatra was Revathi, assuming you would have been born in India. While you don’t know what it was for sure, the name “Nakshatra” was something that you liked.

“You know the Zodiac?”

“Yeah, I’m a Taurus.”

“It’s the Hindu version of it,” You explain. “Except it’s really complicated. Depends on date, time and terrestrial location.”

“And you what to name the ship after that?” He says, slightly incredulous.

You shrug, “It also translates to ‘the stars’ and that seemed appropriate.”

Leo raises an eyebrow, “Well, it’s up to you. Although, if I were you, I’d just mention the second definition.”

He has a point. It’s kinda like calling your ship the SSV Horoscope.

“Well, where to next Captain?” Leo asks as he leans against the railing of your platform.

“Let’s go down to the Spectre Offices,” You declare as you walk back to the cab. “Might as well find out what kind of stuff I have access to now.”

“You sure that I’ll be able to come in?” Leo asks as he falls in behind you. “Don’t want to get arrested for seeing something I shouldn’t have.”

You grin, “It’s a good thing you’re with me then, right?”

He laughs, and you take the opportunity to punch him again.
_

The Spectre Offices are rather nondescript. Just another automated door that would have been indistinguishable from all the others in the Presidium Offices, save for the symbol of the Spectres engraved into the panel right next to it. The door doesn’t open as you approach and you note that there isn’t any kind of interface near it. Your brow furrows as you look around, how exactly are you supposed to open this?

“It’s in the panel,” a feminine voice says from behind you.

Turning around you see an asari in blue armor leaning against the opposite wall. She’s pretty, in a lean, hard way, with purple facial markings and an upturned nose. Her mouth is quirked in a slight smile and her arms are crossed over her chest.

“Don’t worry, that happens to pretty much everyone,” She continues in an amused tone. “Except Jondam. He knew where it was pretty much immediately but he used to be STG so it’s not really surprising.”

She pushes off the wall and holds out a hand for a shake, “Tela Vasir, Spectre.”

Asari are far from the worst thing wrong with Mass Effect.
>>
“Sonali Vasusena,” You say, grasping Vasir’s hand and giving a firm shake. “Same but you probably knew that already.”

“Yes, I have,” the smiling Asari says. “Congratulations. It’s an honor to have you with us.”

She glances at Leo and offers her hand again, “I assume you’re part of her squad?”

“Yes ma’am,” Leo grins as he shakes her offered hand. “Lieutenant Leonard Delamere. Pleasure to make your acquaintance.”

“Same to you, Lieutenant Delamere.” Vasir smiles back.

“Please, call me Leo.”

Vasir blinks, “Very well… Leo.”

She look back to you, “The controls are inside the Spectre Crest.”

Walking over to the panel next to the door she presses her hand against it. A moment later, the door slides open and an automated feminine voice says “Greetings Spectre Vasir.”

The Asari walks through the door and looks back at you, “Try it out.”

You press your palm against the panel, which doesn’t react at all. Instead the same automated voice says “Welcome Spectre Vasusena.”

You walk through the door into a small foyer like room. Leo begins to follow, up until a red light flashes and two recessed turrets pop out of the ceiling and aim at him.

“INTRUDER ALERT” booms from hidden speakers.

Leo raises his hands and steps back out the door, eyes wide, “Uh, whoops?”

Vasir winces, “Ah, Sorry, I should have warned you. You’ll need to add him as an authorized user before he can enter.”

“Hey No Problem,” Leo laughs, the image of calm even as eyes remain glued to the turrets aiming at him. “I’ll just wait outside. No biggie.”

The other Spectre brings up her Omni-tool and issues a few commands. The turrets retract a moment later.

“You can authorize him at your terminal,” Vasir explains as the door closes. “You’ll just need to verify your account first.”

You nod, following her as the interior door opens.

The inside of the Spectre Offices is markedly different from the Exterior. The aesthetic is a rather tasteful dark blue, although you’re not one to judge, and the furniture matches. Holo-screens line the walls displaying everything from security feeds to News Programs, and multiple terminals are set up around the room. A hallway on the left leads down to the office interiors. On the right, a shooting range can be seen through a large window. A Salarian appears to be practicing shooting while a Turian fiddles at a nearby workbench.

“Most of these are info terminals,” Vasir explains as she weaves her way between the computers. “There are some bedrooms down there” she gestures down the hall, “along with a fitness room, armory, machine shop and mainframe. You can see the firing range, obviously. I’d give you a tour and introduce you to everyone who’s here, but I’m here on business sadly.”

She sits down at one of the terminals and presses her hand against the inactive screen, causing it to light up. “You should probably login to Spectre Network and finish up your registration.”

Nakshatra
>>

No it really isn't, the Nakshatras (the plural) refers to the general concept of their horoscope equivalent, which is a massive over simplification.

The noun Nakshatra itself means something different entirely just relating to the same rough topic, it would be like saying Astronomy is horoscopes.

Yeah you can't really compare the Hindu Zodiac with western/anglo horoscopes at all, to do so is just stupidly moronic.

We could play games with the nakshatra and what it means, instead of going with xxx01 as code name give each team member a nakshatra name. We're Revathi, Leo could be either the Leo or Taurus analogue and so forth

Sitting down at one of the terminals, you press your hand against the screen just as Vasir did, and the terminal unlocks, a “Welcome Spectre Vasusena” appearing on the screen before it brings you to a verification form. You sigh, great, more paperwork.

It’s actually a rather small amount of red tape and mainly involves you linking your various accounts, from e-mail to banks, into one Spectre account that’s protected by some truly impressive ciphers. You guess it’s to prevent identity theft. Council wouldn’t want someone misusing Spectre access.

You finish up in short order and are taken to your main screen. Sifting through your settings, you make a few adjustments to the GUI so you can view it more easily. Accessing the security records allows you to add Leo’s info to the Authorized Access list without much of a hassle. It’s actually pretty neat how easy and straightforward everything is. You guess that the Council figures that its Spectres aren’t complete idiots.

Taking a moment to look through your mail, you find that several confirmations for paperwork you submitted to the Alliance in your work inbox, as well as an important notice from Ambassador Udina that the Alliance will still take care of most expenses that you incur during the course of your missions, namely for fuel, berthing, supplies, crew salaries and stuff like that. That’s actually really nice to hear.

>Love, Jer

Well, shit. You wince as you open the next one. It’s from Catalina, one of your friends from the coffee shop near your house. Spunky kid a full decade younger than you, but someone you got along with surprisingly well.

The next one is from Amos, the proprietor of the coffee shop. Well into his seventies, the kindly man was someone you could rely on and always had time to talk whenever you were feeling down. His letter is short, offering congratulations and an offer to stop by the shop when you got back. Yeah, you figured he knew who you really were.

The one after that is from Christine, a member of your book club. Chef, Mother of two, and aspiring writer, she was a good friend and a mentor. Her letter expresses shock, but mentions that she always knew that there was more to you than you let on and doesn’t hold the fact you lied against you. She also asks you to visit when you get back because she has a new quiche recipe she wants you to try that’s made with Thessian wheat.

The last one is from your former CO, Captain Gunnarson, also wrote to congratulate you. The stern veteran had led Delta Squad and retired from active duty a few years ago to teach at N-School. You help him out with the new classes when you’re on leave. It’s nice to see his encouraging words and you take them to heart.

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42732287

Your responses to Jeremy and Cat are apologetic, but you maintain that much of your work is classified and you lied to keep them uninvolved. Inviting them out for a drink, you send both their answers on their way. The replies you send to Christine and Amos are grateful and you promise to visit as soon as you can. To Gunnarson, you say you’ll make him proud.

You close down the terminal and stand up, cracking your neck as you make your way to the armory. Almost as an afterthought, you send a message from your O-tool to Leo letting him know that his biometrics have been added to the system and he can enter now.

Entering the Armory, you’re immediately struck by the sheer variety of weapons that are being stored here. You’ve seen a lot of these before, usually in the hands of the scum you were fighting but some of these are really high end. There’s one massive sniper rifle folded up on a rack and you pick it up, noting that it’s significantly heavier than pretty much every other weapon you’ve ever held, even some of the heavy weapons. You unfold it, making sure it’s unloaded, and take a look down the sights, noting the additional info that the scope shows.

“You sure you can handle that?” a flanged voice asks from the door.

Looking up from the sights, you turn to the turian standing in the doorway. He’s youngish, with blue face tattoos and a holo targeter over one eye. He’s wearing metallic blue armor and carrying a folded sniper rifle in his arms. He’s rather familiar.

“It’s got a hell of kick, probably break your arm if you tried firing it.”

“Oh,” you begin as you raise the rifle up in your left hand and rest it against your shoulder, “I think I can handle it. The M-98 Widow, never thought I'd actually see one. It’s a beauty.”

You pause and extend your right hand out to shake, “I'm Sonali Vasusena. And you are?"

The Turian seems vaguely amused as he shakes your hand, “Garrus Vakarian, nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you,” you echo absently as you realize who you’re talking to.

Garrus Vakarian, one of Shepard’s companions on her hunt for Saren. A Hero in his own right. You’re not one to gush over celebrities, but you do feel quite a bit of respect for the turian in front of you.

Garrus tilts his head, a rather birdlike movement on his frame, and looks at the rifle resting on your shoulder, “Do you want to, what’s the phrase you humans use, ‘put your money where your mouth is’?”

Your grin can be described as shit-eating, “Of course.”
_

You stride into the shooting range, brimming with confidence, the massive sniper rifle still slung on your shoulder. The Salarian from earlier is nowhere to be found, and the range is clear. Garrus follows behind you, and activates the targets downrange from a panel near the workbench when you enter the center booth.

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42733281

“I set the targets to maximum density,” the Turian says with a little amusement as you grab a heatsink and slot it into the rifle. “Don’t hurt yourself.”

“Oh, I’ll be fine,” you say with a grin as you bring the gun to your shoulder and look down the sights.

It occurs to you then, that even though you’re inhumanly tough, that it might be a good idea to have some kind of failsafe, on the off chance that the gun really is capable of breaking your arm. Armor would normally serve in that role, but you’re only wearing your N7 jacket for protection. You contemplate getting some armor, but that would be cowardly, and you’re not about to show any signs of weakness after your display of confidence earlier.

That’s when you remember, you’re a Biotic. You could reinforce your body with a hard Barrier and use that to mitigate most of the force. But that would require a higher Energy output than you are capable of. You’re well aware that you’re not a very strong Biotic, but your control is rather good. You recall reading that the Eezo nodes in your body are linked primarily to your somatic nerves, which is why movement was often needed for Biotics to use their abilities. However, it’s possible that you could stimulate the nodes and have them reinforce those self same muscles. It wouldn’t really require much focus to keep up, similar to your Barrier system.

>[CONT.]
>>
>>42733321

Taking a deep breath, you activate your Biotics. But instead of directing them outward, you focus inward, forcing the energy into your muscles. It’s simple, and easy really, far more so than tossing compressed bundles of Dark Matter around. Taking another breath, you pull the trigger.

The gunshot is massive, indicative of the power behind the weapon that caused it. But the rifle in your arms barely moves, held securely in place by your Biotically reinforced augmented musculature. Downrange, the head of the dummy explodes as the massive round passes through it. Calmly you eject the smoking heatsink, noting that your hands are moving much faster than before, before smoothly rising to your feet to face the stunned Turian, a massive smile on your face.

“Told you.”

[End Thread]

What do you think of that codename scheme?
>>
>>42733502

Makes sense to me. I would just need to calculate the nakshatrams for each team member.
>>
>>42733527
With 27/28 names we could even fit the 2 members we lost last mission
>>
>>42733556
Admittedly, not all of your teammates would be approving of this idea.
>>
>>42733556
we only lost 1, the other is just combat ineffective and sidelined, though we should go out of our way to check up on her and help her out when we have any opportunities to
>>
>>42733527
In a real situation, I don't think it would be smart. For one, the names seem to have a lot of syllables to them, so using them under fire doesn't seem smart or fast. Secondly, the rest of the team doesn't speak Hindi so they're gonna have to try extra hard to remember and use their names. I say we should stick with something like a team name IE Echo and have everyone be called Echo 1-9 and during operations just refer to each other by the number

>the rest of the team doesn't speak Hindi so they're gonna have to try extra hard to remember and use their names
thats not an issue at all anon, their codenames, not trying to decipher a battle cant
>>
>>42733579

Also a fair point.

I'll handle that next thread though, since you'll want to bring it up with your team.

Could use Earth animals. Except for us, we'd just be Boss. So Sonali would be The Boss, Leo would be Snake, Jaro would be Wolf, etc.

I'm a terrible person aren't I?
>>
>>42733682
Sadly, we are nowhere near manly enough to be Big Boss.

And Jaro doesn't seem like the type to snipe much.
>>
>>42733682
Even though you were trying to make a shitty joke, I found something interesting. Codenames as a pun on their names.

Leo- Lion (Leonard means Brave Lion)
Jaroslava- Glory (Jaroslav means fierce, glorious)
Cath- Hecate or Purity (Possible Origins of the name)
Sonali- Aurum (Sonali apparently means Golden, which is kinda fitting considering her last name)
>>
>>42733770
kinda neat, I can see it working, it also masks identities a lot better than Nakshatrams do
>>
>>42733770
Anon, you're a genious. Fuckin A. Cool sounding, make sense, not gibberish, fast and easy to learn and speak
>>
>>42733770
I like, I say we use this
>>
>>42733770
Analysis of last names:

Delamere- French in Origin, means of the Sea
Vlcek- Slavic, Little Wolf
Valdez- Spanish, Son of Baldo, which means Brave
Vasusena- Original name of Karna from the Mahabharata. Karna was the Son of the Sun God Surya and was born with Golden Armor Fused to his body.

Last makes me think of myths, so Heroes could also work as names. Karna for Sonali, Roland for Leo, Novak for Jaro and Cid for Cath.
>>
>>42733881
I prefer the first names codenames in >>42733770
>>
>>42733907
That's fair.

Admittedly, we're going to run into some issues for aliens.
>>
>>42734021
Not a problem, just ask what their names mean.
