You really hope Rahne can take a somewhat bumpy ride, because, if the look on Doctor Octopus’ face is any indication, you’re going to have to move soon.

The familiar buzz along your spine alerts you to her attack before it even materializes, the links of her tentacles bunching and coiling together, preparing to spring at you with devastating pneumatic force. You spring over them, landing on your free hand and spinning yourself back onto your feet, the supervillain’s artificial limbs digging a set of deep, jagged trenches into the road behind you.

Hissing with rage, the very obviously mad scientist pulls her limbs back, two of them attempting to sweep under you while a third snaps at your head, intent, apparently, on plucking it clean off. Focusing away from the pain of your injuries, you fling yourself through the air, using one of the grasping limbs as a foothold for a second leap that brings you into contact with the ruined wall of a nearby housing block. You adhere to it by your palms and feet, neurons firing like lightning through your skull, tracking the sinuous movements of the supervillain’s limbs as they come after you.

You avoid them again and again, each movement more natural, more fluid, than the last. You can feel that your injuries are almost full healed.

“Argh!” The deranged woman cries out in frustration, two of her limbs seeming to share her fury, shaking like the tail end of a rattlesnake. A third leaps at you, seeming intent on impaling you to the wall behind, and you prepare to twist out of the way.

You don’t see the other two – maybe because this stupid goop is making it hard to turn your head.

Your eyes burn and your vision swims, but you’ve granted yourself a short reprieve.
