Recap:

In the last thread we woke up and went to work, where we were interrogated and threatened by corporate which is totally onto us. We were rescued by our boss who, due to poor corporate structuring, totally stands to benefit from our theft of three humanoid specimens. But it was out of the frying pan and into the fire as he sent us on a particularly difficult assignment in an attempt to make it look like he’s “dealing with us” in a way that corporate would approve of.

The assignment in question: Clear the Sha Tin Water Treatment Facility of some giant salamanders that have recently taken up residence in their treated water reserves. See this paste for the dossier text from the last thread:

The Atlantic Ocean rises and falls outside your personal hot tub.

“Would you like some champagne, honey?”

“No, but have some for yourself. Bring me a Bud.”

A cork pops somewhere behind you and lands between your tub and the glass window that separates it from the story waters outside. Champagne fizzes as it’s poured and a bottle cap clinks as it’s pried free. A beautiful woman, nude from the waist up, slips into the tub beside you and hands you your cold beer.

“I don’t know why you drink that stuff, honey.”

“Because it’s a beautiful lie, darling.”

“Budweiser is a beautiful lie?”, she asks, leaning into your shoulder.

“Sure is. Years ago some bastard sat down and had a real good beer. Somebody handed it to him and it said on the label ‘Budweiser made this’. And you know what he said?”

“What did he say, darling?”

“He said ‘No, I made this’. And that’s how Budweiser came to be.”

“That’s a beautiful story, Vinnie. But I’d rather drink now, so don’t tell another.”

She holds out her champagne glass and you bing the neck of your beer against it while looking at her, your boat, the ocean, and everything else.

Bing.

Bing.

>BING.

The van’s computer chimes at you to let you know you’ve arrived at the Sha Tin Treatment Facility. You reluctantly shake yourself awake and rub your fingers in your eyes.

According to the dossier, the main infestation is in the courtyard where the reserve pools are. They’re still tapped into the system because, well, Hong Kong is gripped by a heatwave at the moment and the controls to turn it off are contained in a structure on the far side of the courtyard across from the entrance. There might be secondary infestations in the sub levels of the facility but you suppose you’ll figure that out when you come to them. Your main objective for the moment is either to clear the pools or turn the water off to try and get these damn salamanders out.

Choose a loadout:

>Heavily Armed:
>Sniper Rifle (Silenced, 16 shots remaining)
>Dual Chinese Specs (Silenced, cartons of ammo)
>Bag of Taser Grids (20)
>Nano-mesh net (incredibly strong and capable of cutting flesh)

Wear military vest and heavily armed. Also, can we sneak the bag of bait in there as well? Figured it probably weighs like 2 pounds so it is rather insignificant in that sense, but if it's a no it's not a big deal.

You carefully review your equipment and decide on a mix of firepower and utility. You pack:

>Tranquilizer gun (23 shots)
>Dual Chinese Specs (Silenced, cartons of ammo)
>Bag of Taser Grids (20)
>1 Frag Grenade, 1 smoke grenade
>Bag of Bait

You also don your body armor, your helmet, and pack your thermal goggles into your bag for deployment when you feel them necessary.

The entrance to the building is watched over by a single treatment facility employee. She looks nervous, so you try to put her at ease.

<Good morning. I'm here to deal with your... lizard problem. Okay if I go in?>

She shudders and makes a face while fishing out her keys.

<They just sent you? Okay... Be careful, I hear strange things going on inside over the past week.>

<The past week? When did they send inspectors?>

<Only a few days ago.>

She ushers you inside.

<Goodbye!>

The door shuts.

You're in a hallway with a couple of attached offices and a clear path out to the courtyard where the reserve pools are. There's also a stairway to a sublevel of some kind.

>>
>>42837600
...it's the middle of the day. It's an open air courtyard. You do not need thermal goggles.

Ready something useful, like bait.
>>
>>42837677
Then you review the archives if you have such a shitty memory. They're right there.
>>
>>42837716
that's fair, but with thermal goggles, would it be easier to see them if they are in the reserves, hidden from view or under water? Also, would thermal goggles even work with salamanders?
>>
>>42837627
>>42837659
>>42837689

You decide to assess the situation in the courtyard before making any radical moves. Donning your thermal goggles, you walk down the corridor, doing a sweep as you make your way to the door to the courtyard.

You don't see any real movement but on reaching the courtyard you realize why.

There are maybe twenty or so visible salamanders, all brown-black in color with prominent red spines around their necks (as described in the dossier) laying around the pools. With the exceptions of the ones directly in the sun, they barely register on your thermal goggles.

Goddamn it, you remember skimming the section in your GEC handbook on amphibians that your instructor had deemed obsolete. These bastards are cold blooded!

There's no way of telling how many are in the pools now but at least the ones in the sun haven't spotted you yet.

You're about 30 feet from the nearest pool and there are two salamanders visible in that space.

>try and tranquilize one
>try and run across the courtyard to the control building with your dual specs
>try and approach one of the pools so you can toss a taser grid inside
>toss out some bait at the nearest group of salamanders
>go back, check the sublevel
>go back, check the offices
>>
>>42837830
>>go back, check the offices
Let's not antagonize yet.
>>

Loot, then salamanders.

>>
>>42837830
>>go back, check the offices
>>
>>42837885
>>42837878
>>42837862

You decide maybe it's best not to aggravate the salamanders right away. They are pretty big after all.

Turning back, you check out one of the offices. It looks like pretty standard bureaucratic fare, with cubicles, desks, the usual. The only difference is the amount of blood spattered everywhere.

This strikes you as odd. No one mentioned fatalities in the dossier but then again, you're not finding any bodies either. Plus, all the blood is dry so whatever did this... ah.

You bend down to examine a pattern tracked across the floor in blood. Rat prints. Large but definitely not mutarats (you can tell by the number of toes).

They were probably here before the salamanders even arrived, attracted by clean water and an office space with a poorly secured food supply (or waste disposal). This would explain what the salamanders have been supplementing their cannibalistic diet with.

There isn't much of worth here. You find an abandoned purse with some jewelry in it (which you cram into your pockets) and a bottle of "HOMEMADE ULTRA HOT INSANITY SAUCE" left in the office fridge. You take that as well.

>sublevel

The stairs to the sublevel lead directly to a catwalk over a vast number of pipes and tanks. There's all sorts of places where critters could hide down here where you would struggle to find them.

There's nothing down here immediately visible so you continue forward until you find a door into the next area; septic treatment. A quick thermal scan reveals pockets of movement; probably rodents.

>>42838277

In septic treatment the catwalk meets up with a normal concrete floor, used to encase the huge vats in which sewage undergoes treatment before being pumped out into the next room.

There is little light in here but what there is is provided by a few archaic incandescent bulbs installed into the walls and a couple of grates in the ceiling that let light through from the courtyard. One of the grates is broken.

On thermal you can see the precise location of the rat colony; they've burrowed into the concrete walls of this space and hollowed out a space of their own. Two of them are actively moving through the room and are currently behind the vats on your right.

The following actions are availible, though you can only ready one item at a time.

>lay out some bait
>turn off thermal
>turn back
>do a full patrol of the room
>ready one of your specs
>ready a taser grid
>ready a smoke grenade

>>42838342

>>
>>42838400
Sounds good boss.
>>
Wait, if we use the smoke grenade tossed into their burrow to force them out, then to deal with the rat swarm we need to swap out the frag grenade for a gas grenade set off in the septic area instead.

Vince just has to block up their burrow entrance and retreat through the door as he throws it.

Vince gets paid per spec, a swarm of gassed out rats is more lucrative.
>>
>>42838419
Rats have been known to eat through up to 4 inches of concrete and more if it is improperly cured.

>>42838442

You retrieve your bag of bait from your bag and lay it out in the middle of the room where you feel the rats on your left are most likely to see it.

Then you draw your gun and step back a bit before patrolling the room. Almost as soon as you turn the corner behind one of the vats, you hear the sound of a rat gnawing away at the bait. Almost as quickly, you hear it stop as the tranquilizer takes effect.

Then, in the darkness, something takes a heavy step forward that echoes throughout the room and hisses.

The dice gods hate you in a very mysterious way.

Despite the poor acoustics of this space, you're able to locate the sound as coming from the direction of the colony itself and you creep towards it, concealing yourself behind a vat.

There's a large salamander there, perhaps double the size of the ones you saw sunning themselves outside. Maybe 4 and a half or five meters in length, like an African Croc. It's brawnier and there are a few other notable changes. The large neck spines seem to have pushed back into the neck and towards the skull while two bright red lines now run in parallel down it's black back.

It's moving from where it was sitting by the rat nest towards your bait, where the tranquilized rat now lays comatose.

You have the drop on it... what do you want to do?

>open fire with your spec, shoot to kill

You don't move until you hear the big salamander chowing down on the rat. It seems to crush its food, snapping its bones in one powerful snap of its jaws before horking down the remaining mess whole.

Once the crackling noise stops, you hear it sniff the bait and then slowly begin to eat that as well. Then you hear it trudge back towards you, a bit more sluggishly than before.

You rotate yourself neatly around the corner, extend, aim, and fire. It's almost like you practiced with a cop or something.

The Salamander is a low-target and you're shooting directly towards it, so the head is a relatively small target. Your first shot goes long and the monster immediately begins to charge towards you with startling speed. You can only imagine how quick it would be if you hadn't drugged it.

Still, it slows down just enough and your nerves keep you just steady enough that your next three shots create a tight grouping in its forehead. The salamander goes down, its limbs sprawling in every direction as it does. The body stops just 5 feet away from you.

There don't seem to be any other exits in this room and it looks like you're going to head back to the surface. Still, you might get something useful out of this place.

You put some additional bait outside the nest and sprinkle some directly outside its entrance.

The first rat peeks its head out after only a few moments but forgoes eating the bait immediately to check the area for predators.

Since you anticipated this, you're watching it do so from the next room over with your thermal goggles on.

It examines the body of the salamander and then returns to the nest, apparently to give the all clear signal. All the rats in the nest except one emerge, one after another and sample the bait. Then they fall prone.

That worked.... really well.

You crouch down on your knees and run your fingers over the salamander's body. It's smooth and slimy to the touch, just like the amphibians described in the guide book.

You also locate gills. You remember gills as having something to do with the development level of certain salamanders but you're not sure what exactly.

The twin red lines down the salamanders back are covered with some kind of bumpy glands. You are pretty sure that they secrete poison, as the bright colors would suggest.

The spines in the neck have gone from being seven inch long protrusions to little nubs that barely stick out of the creatures neck. This seems like an odd development; why retract your poison delivery system?

Lastly, you examine the creatures head. It has small eyes on either side of its head, so frontward vision probably isn't that great. Still, with a more elongated jaw than the relatives you saw in the courtyard, this guy doesn't exactly have to be so accurate. In the jaw itself, you're surprised to find no "real" teeth but there are spines for helping keep anything that isn't crushed instantly by the force of the bite from escaping.

You are now more sure than ever that you don't want to be bitten by one of these.

You return upstairs and make your way to the courtyard door, where you plan your next move.

ima head out for 1-2 hours, if you are still running when i get back ill see you then. good thread so far simmons.

You toss two of your rats about 10 feet or so from the doorway, hoping to lure the two closest salamanders to you.

They both react to the flying meat and move in.

The smaller of the two reaches the rats first and immediately clamps down on one of them, spraying gore from the rodent as though it were a particularly juicy grape.

You start to take aim as it starts on the second one but are taken by surprise when its companion shows up and latches on to its compatriots back leg. There's a horrible sound of bone cracking and then the salamander begins what you recognize as a death spin.

>Nerves [11/13] - You're a little nauseated by whats going on in front of you.

You need to shoot now.

>Success

You unload your full clip into both salamanders, neatly putting two shots into each one.

They struggle a bit, clearly exhibiting some resistance to the tranquilizer, and the smaller one turns around in time to bite the front leg of its tormentor. You hear it snap and then both of the salamanders go still.

Confident that they're out of action, you run forward and toss one of your taser grids into the nearest reserve pool. There's a distinctive zap as the device shorts on contact with the water and then a sizzling as it continues to discharge energy into it.

The surface of the pool suddenly becomes turbulent and a tail emerges from the water, almost crushing you in the process. It's almost as large as the salamander you killed in the sublevel!

The tail continues to spin and jerk about for a moment before finally falling relatively still, hopefully confirming the creature is dead.

Hissing alerts you to the three smaller salamanders that have closed in on your location while this occured...

>throw down a smoke grenade, ninja out of there and try to hit as many pools as you can on your way to the control building
>shoot them down as best you can; you basically killed the leveled up version of them in the sublevel, these guys can't be too bad...
>Throw a rat between the three of them, that should distract them while you move towards the next reserve pool
>Toss a frag grenade at them

You yank one of your rats free from your vest and toss it between the three salamanders. They turn on one another almost instantly and you quickly make your way towards the next pool.

The action on the surface seems to have already disturbed the inhabitant of this pool however and his black head is rising from the water like some kind of lovecraftian wet dream, watching you with forward facing eyes and baring long, red fangs.

You're not going to get close enough to this guy for a nice neat, so you call upon your American baseball acumen and ready a pitch!

You do your best Nolan Ryan impression and send it straight down the middle as the beast brings both of its clawed feet onto the land. The taser grid hits it right under the neck and drops directly into the water under the creatures still emerging chest. There's another cartoonish zap and the salamander jerks backwards and falls back into the pool.

It occurs to you that as large as these salamanders are, they're not quite as large as the pools are deep. If you could just reach that control station and drain the water away, they might be trapped and well, wouldn't that be a windfall for the Hong Kong GEC branch.

Not to mention you.

Still, you could stick to your current plan which is working but seems to be attracting the attention of more and more of the smaller salamanders outside the pools.

>stick to the plan, try and drop a taser grid in each and everyone of these pools
>drop a smoke grenade, hope it's enough to shield you from the pool dweller's gazes while you run

Rat time

You start ripping rats off your vest and belt left and right, tossing them into each of the remaining 8 pools as you run by. The small salamanders mindlessly chase after the meat into the pools and their giant siblings simply devour them.

It's neat and efficient and it almost goes perfectly, especially since you had exactly 8 rats left. Something goes awry on your last toss however and you accidentally hit the juvenile salamander closest to the control buildings entrance. Instead of going after the meat, it charges you.

You have no time to pull your spec so you decide...

>Make a very special double roll of 6d6, I'll add the modifiers as appropriate. Boost up to twice with either Nerves [11/13] or STR/STA [12/12].

The salamander leaps up unexpectedly at the end of its charge but you react with lightning speed and catch it in a headlock. Then you perform your second Nolan Ryan impression of the day and start brutally punching it in the face as it desperately tries to wriggle free of your grasp.

You bloody it and make it into the control building but the salamander does break free of your grasp before you can finish it and flees up the stairs.

Your first two shots hit but your hands begin to waver at the last second. Somehow you stabilize and pull through, nailing the fight-or-flight fueled lizard with the rest of your clip and ducking down as the body goes limp and flies over your head before tumbling limply down the entire flight of stairs.

Not perfect but you've heard that being doped up helps with physical trauma like that. He'll probably be fine...

In the control room, you manage to locate the EMERGENCY DRAIN button which just happens to be large, red, and labeled in both english and chinese. Slamming it down, you watch through the window as the pools outside flush themselves and the salamanders within writhe impotently.

The only juveniles that are still left living as far as you can see are the two you tranked by the far entrance to the court yard. The ones that tried to surround you appear to have ripped themselves to shreds in their fighting over that rat you tossed. Not very intelligent.

You retrieve your (very heavy) prize from the bottom of the stairs and march it out of the building, parading it proudly past the girl who stood watch at the entrance.

<Is that for the big man?> she asks, her expression wry.

<How do you people know where I am all the time? And yes. It is. Catch.>

You toss the salamander her way and she catches it, knocking the wind out of her.

<Zheng... will... deliver... your payment.> she tells you, struggling under the weight.

<Good. Now get the hell out of here, I'm already under investigation.>

She does as you say.

The last surviving salamanders are a bitch to load into the van but they do seem pretty tranquil. You dial up Devlinson on the phone.

"Vince, you still in one piece?"

"Yeah, no thanks to you. Listen, I'm coming back for debrief, send over 8 trucks and like 4 guys with the highest strength tranks you got. I've got them all in pots for you."

>>
>>42841988
How the hell would Vince know until he goes home tof ind out?

Yu is obviously supposed to be staying indoors and Chen should be taking a cab home. But might not be.

Really shouldn't have left someone you met yesterday alone in your apartment. Even if there's nothing to steal.
>>
>>42841988

They're both still at your apartment. Vince felt confident enough in leaving them alone and I'd trust his judgement for the moment. Amanda has no reason to suspect Yu is anything unusual unless he displays his abilities in front of her and he's smart enough not to (though he may not enjoy doing so).

>>42842035

>if we cut off penises

It was a play on >>42841489

The guy you punched out was only a little larger than a real giant Chinese Salamander, so no. He was the smallest variety you saw in this encounter.

Hong Kong struggles with its water supply IRL and you just cut off the largest treatment plant in the city for importing water from the north. A fair amount of chaos is ensuing but no one will debate that you did your job.
>>
>>42842099
As long as we get paid and don't get sued lack of water in the city isn't our problem.

>The only juveniles that are still left living as far as you can see
As you can see, is that not including the dozens/hundreds in the tanks?

Couldn't Vince have managed to sell Zheng three specimens not one?
>>
>>42842133
You live there.
>>
>>42842161

You may have noticed that the original estimate of 50-300 in the tanks was whittled down enormously once you arrived and saw maybe two dozen in >>42837830 .

You may have also noticed that every single one of the salamanders that ran after the rats you tossed into the pools was eaten by the giant adults. There are 8 adults and three juveniles remaining, one of which you sold to Zheng (who pays more but wants unique specimens) and the other two of which you are going to bring back to GEC in the hopes that they're a breeding pair.

All of the captured adults also count as specimens you're bringing in and they may have multiple breeding pairs among them.

You did good on the financial front today and you didn't even have to split it with a partner.

The water supply is halted until the salamanders are extracted. If they start refilling it now, your efforts will be totally in vain.

That said, if you really want the pretreated water, be prepared to pay for it with terrible shits. A better idea would be to phone a friend.

>>42842425

One of the fastest. Most of the difficulty would have come from one of the adult salamanders emerging from the tanks while you contended with the juveniles but that was made much easier by you catching ALL the rats, which the salamanders reacted to much like crocodiles thrown a dead chicken.

Basically, these guys were really easy to outsmart but if they got out of hand you were basically dealing with a salamander kaiju.
