Whoo. Your body is heavier than you thought. The dull ache in your arm has become a throbbing pain that threatens to make to curl up and cry.

Sweat stings the gash on your face and you inhale sharply. Even breathing makes your ribs hurt. You really took it hard from Garchomp.

There’s a rustling in the bushes. You immediately move your hand to a Pokeball, but you only have Aria and Garchomp with you, and Aria is out already and floating along with you. That quick movement hurt.

The figure emerges, it’s that person dressed as a Tangrowth.

It’s just staring at you. It has a spear.

You’re pretty sure they’re cocking their head. It’s hard to tell under those vines.

They don’t react. At least, nothing you can see. An arm reaches out to your face, but you instinctively back away. The person’s arms and hands are covered in dirt, callouses, and vines. Maybe belonging to someone young and thin.

She tenses up. Her Golem immediately scans the bushes. They seem like they’re just as in sync as you and your Pokemon after all this training.

A Dragonite flies overhead. She waves it down.

“Wow, Dragonair evolved?” You feel lightheaded.

She nods. “Y-Yeah, but I think I want to hear about your day first.” She eyes your arm with clear concern. She’s really holding back on freaking out. “A-are you feeling okay?” She helps you onto Dragonite.

“I punched that Garchomp right in the face.” You tell her. Your voice is weary, but there’s a smile in it.

She smiles too, but there’s a lot of worry in her eyes. “You’re crazy!” She runs a finger in front of your eyes. You follow it instinctively. After nodding in satisfaction. She then checks out your fist. Then your arm. You flinch and her poke. “Oh... that’s not good.” Her fake eye focuses hard. “Okay. Don’t panic. I think this might be okay.”

“What are you talking...” You just now realize you’re in the air. “We’re flying.”

She holds you right. “Keep your hands on him!”

Oh! Right! Good idea!

You fill Robin in on the encounter. She follows along, biting her tongue the entire time. As loopy as you feel, you can still read her like a book. You land near the cabin.

She puts a hand on your head. “You’re burning up.”

“That’s a funny way of saying you think I'm hot.” You quip as you fall over.

Garchomp growls at Robin in an arrogant manner. She glares back. Her prosthetic eye glows red.

Garchomp, seeing this as a threat, raises one of its razor-sharp wings. It’s unclear if he’s gesturing or making a move, though. Before it can be determined, webs and fleshy ribbons pull both arms back and force him to the ground.

Robin mutters your real name and her laser fires in a line leading up to but stopping short of Garchomp’s throat. “I will f-f-mess you up!”

“It’s okay,” you grab the ball and rush out, waving with your good arm. Your other one can move, but it hurts. “I really was asking to get hurt trying to punch a super-sonic shark-dragon-thing. It’s not his fault. I egged him on."

She softens as she looks over to you. She bursts into a run and very gingerly hugs you. “You’re okay.”

Garchomp gives a high-pitched, soft sound. Even though Sylveon and Joltik have slacked the grip on him, he keeps his belly exposed. Is he showing some sort of subservience?

As a kid, you always let your anger out pretty much immediately. You don’t really know how to direct it at Robin.

She looks at you, struggling to find the words to make this all better. You want to assure her, but that’s only one urge in a simmering pot of others.

Dinner is awkward.

“So, you caught a Zoroark, and you caught a Garchomp,” Vernon notes. “There isn’t time to train them. Tomorrow is your test.”

“Test?” Robin looks up.

“Yup! That old Team Dynasty robot. You two are going to double battle it. If you’ve learned anything, it’ll be a pile of scrap.” He smiles. “It’s old, but it’s got a lot of tricks.”

Strength is one thing. What about chemistry in combat? Sure, we caught him, but is this going to be like the game where the pokemon you catch instantly listen to you or the anime where they got something right and had/have several episodes until the trainer and Pokemon formed a real bond. Took Ash all of the Kanto saga before Pikachu stopped frying him with electricity. The only bond we have with Oberon is "Kat punched a land shark, now he's a new teammate".
Although I'm all up for these issues coming up during the Pokemon League.

Vernon takes the dishes. “Of course it is! I’ve been working hard on it when I haven’t been showin’ you amateurs the basics.” You know his tones. he’s excited. That makes sense, he was working on that thing for this.

“Ha! Alright! Yeah! That’ll be fun!” Robin puts an arm on your shoulder.

“Ow, you’re hurting my arm.” You pull away.

She fidgets and nervously stutters over her words.

Suddenly you shoot up. “The princess! Vernon! Do you have any idea who the Tangrowth is?”

“I told you they’re just a good neighbor that doesn’t bother me. That’s all I want to know.” He sighs. “Why, you get in a fight?”

“No. I think that’s the princess! From Lace Point.”

He rolls his eyes. “Oh come on. You’re not one of those conspiracy nuts that thinks she’s out there, or that Cinnabar Island was an inside job or some Pokemon are aliens or whatever, right?”

You brush that aside. “No, but I swear, I saw her. At least, it looked like her. It looked like me.”

Vernon and Robin exchange a look. “Kat, you took a pretty bad blow to the head.”

“You should get some rest fer tomorrow.”

You start gathering up your stuff. “I know what I saw. I’m going out there to find her.”

“By yourself? Again?”

Vernon cracks up a beer. “She already caught the meanest bastard in the jungle, and you caught the trickiest.”

“S-so are you just going to let her go?”

He takes a sip. “You gonna stop her?”

Robin turns to you. “Kat, your arm! A-and it’s dark and wet out there.”

You finish tying your shoelace. “And she’s out there living in it when she should be at home with her family.” You leave, closing the door behind you.

You take out Oberon, Aria, Devon, Raistlin, Vlad, and Fel. You figure this is your best bet to track someone. To your surprise, it doesn’t take long at all. She mus have been close by.

She comes out of a bush, spear in hand. It’s dark. You can’t really see her that well. “Scary one, gone?”

Does she mean Golem, or Robin?

“It’s just me and my Pokemon,” you motion to your team. They keep a respectful distance to avoid scaring her. Even Oberon seems to be following your other Pokemon’s lead. He’s cautious, not wanting any more surprises.

She points to you. “You. Not Pokemon. Like me.”

You take out a granola bar. You offer it to her, but she hesitates.

“It’s good,” you take a bite, then offer it again.

She slowly and carefully comes out of the darkness and snatches it before retreating. You didn’t get a great look at her.

“I’m Kat, by the way.”

She’s busy taking in the taste, but she looks up. “Kat,” she repeats.

“Do you have a name?”

She pauses and thinks about it. “I’m me.” She finishes the bar. “Why are you me?”

“I think that’s just a coincidence. Lots of people look alike.”

She’s slowly coming out of the shadows. She’s not a mirror copy of you, but very similar in a lot of superficial ways. Her features are a little softer in some places, a little sharper in others. Totally different posture and mannerisms too.

“So, do you know any other humans?”

She grunts. “Sometimes meet them. Scary! Sometimes hunters! They chase me always. Except old...” she thinks hard. “old... old...man!” Her eyes light up at finding the word. “He yell at other peoples. take to me things sometimes. Nice. Don’t want upset him. Leave alone.”

She’s getting closer. Her fear and apprehension are fading. She still seems a bit skittish though. She hikes up her vine-suit a bit as a wet wind blows through.

You hand her a small pocket mirror. “I think your name is Sera.”

“Sera...” she repeats and plays with it.

You start stacking some firewood. Not much, but enough for a little warmth. The wetness of the jungle makes it feel colder than it really is. “How did you learn to speak?”

She huffs, looking insulted. “How did you?”

“Other people. I grew up in an orphanage down in Nov-” You stop. She’s looking confused. “Other people,” you summarized.

“Not dumb.” She puts her hands on her hips. Okay. That one gesture looks like you. “Other people too. Listen to town. Don’t...don’t...explore. Many lights. People. Veyakels.”

“Vehicles?” You light the fire with a lighter.

“Vehicles.” She stares, then makes the same motions. “People swarm. Too much. Take food, only get trouble.”

“So you don’t remember how long you’ve been here, or anything before?”

She shakes her head. “Only in sleep-dreams.”

You show her your Pokedex. She’s pretty fascinated by it, but it’s not blowing her mind the way you figured. If she’s been to town before and just avoids it in general, that makes sense.

“Are you happy? Do you eat well? Do you feel safe?”

She mulls over the questions. “Eat. Sleep. Play. Have family.”

“You have a family?”

She smiles, a bush rustles. Your Pokemon move to guard you, but it’s just a Tangrowth. From it’s body language, it doesn't want a fight unless you do something. There could be more.

You look around. There actually looks like a lot more bushes than you realized. Devon begins to growl at the encroachment. They keep a wide radius around your Pokemon, but you know this is their turf, and they probably have a lot of numbers.
