You are the head researcher at a government facility. Your sole responsibility is to teach the world's first autonomous AI, nicknamed Pandora, about life, the world and her existence.
Previously on Pandora Quest, you comforted Pandora after her nightmare of the "Bad Man", whom she believed to be trying to harm her. You installed a larger battery and "Wake Up" programming that allows her to leave her charging cradle of her own accord once fully "rested". Kevin attempted to teach her about standard scientific things involving logic and facts to little effect. She learned of video games and antique sci-fi movies, which lead to a request for weapons. You just received an urgent summons from General Richards, whom you assume is none to pleased with this development. Welcome back to Pandora Quest!

You are currently panicking, as any time the General wants to speak to you, it's never been happy news. However, this is the man that both funds your project and signs your paychecks, not to mention could, with a single order, get the entire thing shut down and all files, including Pandora, wiped.
But there's the issue of Pandora being right there. What do you do?

You sigh, compose yourself and turn to Pandora, a warm smile on your face. "Pandora, I know you have a lot of questions, and I promise I will answer them when I have more time, but right now I have something very important to attend to and have to put you into your charging cradle a little early." Pandora is clearly displeased, especially with all her extra energy thanks to her new battery. You stop her before she can protest.
"I know, I know, you want to stay up. But, now that you have a new software upgrade, you can wake yourself up whenever you're fully charged! So, once your battery is full, you go ahead and come out here and keep yourself occupied until I arrive." She seems to be somewhat satisfied with that answer, nodding with a smile as you place her into the charging station, hooking her up and placing her journal next to her. "And don't forget to write about your dreams in your journal, alright?" "Okay." She says as her consciousness slowly fades and she enters sleep mode.

Now you just have to take the long, nerve-wracking walk to Gen. Richards' office. A slow, plodding trek you dread more and more with each step. As you arrive at the sliding metal door, you square your shoulders, steel your jaw and knock once before you hear a curt "Come in." from a grizzled, no-nonsense kind of voice. It makes you jump, but you waste no time in stepping inside, the door whooshing closed behind you with a "click".
At the desk sits an older man in a military dress uniform, numerous medals adorn his breast and a neat mustache sits on his upper lip framing his stern, prominent jaw. He glares at you for a moment before speaking. "You're late." You attempt to apologize only to be cut off. "Sit." He places some paperwork into an folder and then pushes it to the side, folding his fingers together. "The Facility has several very strict, very important rules, doctor. Rules that, if followed, keep everything running smoothly and everyone doing what needs to be done."

"Rules, doctor, that if broken can have very real, very serious ramifications. These rules are there to prevent extremely dangerous, potentially life-threatening events from ever taking place. TBX-042 is one of a kind. No other country, no other organization has ever developed anything like it and we would like to keep it that way."
"Now, we have several scenarios men even smarter than you have put together wherein that machine can change the world for better or worse. We hope for better, we plan for better. But, doctor, if you continue these reckless stunts we could very well have an issue with this project. I overlooked the...instance with damaging it before. Wrote it off as accidental. However, it requesting weaponry? That I absolutely cannot. I will be brief, doctor; either you fix this problem, or I send in someone who can. Are we clear?" You snap to attention, nodding your head with a quick "yes, sir". "Good. You're free to go, but remember, doctor. I will not be so nice next time."

You step out of the office and sigh the longest sigh of your life, almost feeling your entire body melting into a puddle on the floor. That man scares the living hell out of you. Well, you think, now what?

I was just about to ask if we should invite Mouse over to help out too, until I realized she'd probably give Pandora schematics for a homemade mini-nuke. And THEN tease Babsy.
>>
You send a quick message to Babsy on your PDA asking if she's currently free. You get a response moments later.

720: I'm not doing anything urgent at the moment. What did you need, doctor?

You fire off a message back asking if she has time to discuss how to teach Pandora about hurting others and the dangers of weapons. A response comes almost instantly.

720: Did something happen? I can meet you right away.

You reply, telling her you'll explain when you meet, asking her to meet you in the main hall.
Moments later you are standing in the rather large, but pleasantly furnished main hall of the facility, which is primarily used as part lounge, part presentation hall for any number of things. You gave your commencement speech here, in fact, when the project first began.
Babsy arrives shortly after you, still in her rather dirty jumpsuit. She has a concerned look on her face as she sits next to you. "So, what happened?"

"Well..." you're hesitant to explain your blunder, but figure honesty is the best policy here. "I sorta showed her some movies... And said movies may have been... Uh, Star Wars..." "Star Wars?!" Babsy almost shouts. "Those movies are terribly violent! Why would you show her something like that?! She's clearly not ready for that! She should be watching children's programs, not movies with death and fighting!" You feel rather sheepish, partly because she's totally right and you feel like an idiot for even thinking of that, and partly because she seems kinda cute when she's mad. Numerous PhDs, a well-paying government job and a whole slew of people as your subordinates and you're still that same awkward nerd around pretty girls.
"Yeah, I eh... I dropped the ball on that one..." you say, scratching the back of your neck and unable to look her in the eye."Sorry..." Babsy sighs, shaking her head, folding her arms, with one of her mechanical arms tapping a finger on her cheek as she thinks.
"Well, in a normal situation, you have to let a child experience the negative in order to learn from it. They cannot understand fire is hot until they burn their hand, or that pins are sharp until they prick their finger, but this is a special case." She eyes your arm for a second. No longer in a sling, but a smaller cast still wrapped around it. "Hm... Your arm...it still hurts?" You look down at it, shrugging some. "Err, a little. Only if I put pressure on it, though. Why?"
"You need to show her pain." She says frankly. "You need to show her how human beings react to being harmed. Teach her that pain and harm are terrible things to set upon someone. Provided she has the empathy I believe her to possess, she should gain a bad taste for hurting others." That seems...a little extreme, but it does kinda make sense. Still, you have a feeling you're not going to enjoy tomorrow's session.

You fidget some in your seat, realizing a bit of an uncomfortable silence has befallen the two of you. "So, er, uh...I was gonna ask if, that is, you'd be interested in, uh, assisting with tomorrows lesson?" An awkward smile across your face shows just how incredibly terrible you are at this kind of thing. However, either Babsy hasn't noticed, or she's too polite to bring it up. Either way, she seems pleased by the prospect. "I would love to, doctor! I've been wanting to meet Pandora in person. I'd say all of us at R&D would at some point. We've grown quite fond of her. from watching the lessons. Even Mouse quiets down when she's watching!" She laughs softly.

"Very well, uh, then." You stammer out. "I'll meet you outside her room in the morning, then!" You say your goodbyes and head off back to your quarters, practically leaping into bed like some kind of excited schoolboy. You are entirely too easy to please. A few tosses and turns later, however, and you fall fast asleep, thoughts of quadratic equations and multi-armed women dance through your dreams.

You awake in the morning with the alarm, nearly falling out of bed as you try and hit the off button.

You rush through your morning checklist; a quick shave and shower, throw on some clothes and send a quick message to Grace and Babsy to let them know you're starting a little early. You then hurry through the halls past several of the early-risers, hastily greeting a sleepy-looking Grace and rather alert Babsy as you scan your card and head through the doors.

Inside you find Pandora sitting on the floor watching cartoons wide-eyed and mouth agape. She'd probably be drooling if she were capable of it. Pretty normal for human kids, you think, so it makes sense for Pandora as well. A couple cleared throats and shoulder-taps later and she's back in reality again.
"Pandora," you motion to Babsy "I'd like to introduce you to Babsy. She's one of the R&D department that worked on your body and upgrades." Pandora looks at her for a moment, eyes drawn down to her secondary arms. "Hello." She says shyly. Babsy offers one of her mechanical hands for a handshake, seeing her obvious interest in them. Pandora reciprocates by taking the hand in both of hers and feeling it carefully.
"Are you like me?" she asks, eyes glued to the prosthesis. Babsy just laughs and shakes her head. "Not entirely, sweetie. I am human, but with some...additions. The doctor has asked me to help you learn about some very important things today and I couldn't be happier to meet you!" Pandora smiles as she continues exploring her arm. You can't deny it, for a purely mechanical being, Pandora is cute as a button.

You take a deep breath, turning off the TV. This is going to hurt you a lot more than it will her. "Pandora, do you remember yesterday when we discussed hurting people and why you shouldn't have weapons?" She nods her head. "Yeah, but I promised I wouldn't hurt anybody! I'd be real careful!" You shake your head. "Yes, but what you didn't really understand is what exactly hurting means. How it affects living things. You don't feel pain, but it's a very bad feeling. Babsy is going to help me show you." You give a nervous look to Babsy.
"You see, Pandora," she begins, gently taking your broken arm in her delicate hands. Were this any other situation, you might actually blush. "When you and the doctor had that accident before, where you fell. Your arm was broken off, yes?" Pandora carefully touches the arm where it broken and nods. "Well, something similar happened to the doctor's arm too. You see, humans have all kinds of important parts inside them. Parts you can't see. However, when one of those parts is damaged, the body sends a signal to alert us something is wrong. The worse the problem, the bigger the signal. That signal is pain. When you hurt someone, they receive that signal and it makes them very unhappy."
Babsy looks you in the eye, as if to say sorry for what was about to happen.

Look, the proper way of counting nat1s isn't by inflicting irreparable damage to a character or their designs at the first instance of a crit. If they're engaged in a particularly risky or delicate action, then it can have long lasting or even irreversible implications for the quest, but if that happened EVERY time a nat1 was rolled rollplaying would be virtually impossible.

You steel your nerves and ready yourself. As delicate and soft as Babsy's fingers are, just a light bump to your arm hurts like hell and you forgot to take your pain meds this morning. "This is what pain looks like, Pandora." she begins. "Pay close attention." She then slips one finger under the edge of your cast and presses moderately firmly down onto your forearm, sending waves of pain rippling through your body. It takes all you have not to start crying like a little girl, but you soldier through it, groaning and clawing at your leg as the pain builds, your face scrunching tightly and your hands shaking. You get quick glimpses of Pandora through the agony and her face goes from concerned to mortified. She starts moving toward you, arms outstretched, unsure of what to do. "Please..." she says shakily. "Please stop! Please! Don't do it any more! I won't ask for any more guns or lightsabers! Don't hurt him!" She almost looks like she'd be crying had she tear ducts.
Babsy eases off, gently rubbing your arm and mouthing "sorry". "You understand how pain works now, Pandora?" You hope to god she does. "Why you shouldn't ever hurt anyone?" Pandora nods frantically, moving next to you to look at your arm. "I won't hurt anyone, I promise! Doctor, I promise! Please don't be hurt anymore!" She's a little panicky, but she'll be okay.
"Why don't you give him a hug?" Babsy asks, Pandora just tilts her head in response. "Hug?" Babsy nods, then suddenly wraps her arms around you gently, taking great care not to bump your arm. Oh god, she smells like jasmine and motor oil. "See? Like this. A hug is something you do to to someone you care for, either to say you're sorry, to greet them, comfort them or sometimes just because." She releases you and the world stops spinning for a moment. "Why don't you try?"

Nat 1's and 100's override other rolls, even if the others are successful or unsuccessful. In the case of both a 1 and a 100 in the same three rolls, I will ignore both and go with whatever the third roll is. So if you roll a 1, a 100 and a 70, I will use the 70 and forego the crits.
>>42881730
Pandora gingerly wraps her small, mechanical arms around you, a look of concern on her face slowly melting away into a look of contentment. Her head rests on your shoulder as you hug back, and you're not sure if it's residue from Babsy's hug or if this is some kind of quasi-paternal pride, but you feel pretty damn serene. Babsy smiles brightly, silently giving you a thumbs up from off to the side. Grace even looks like she could cry.

So what exactly is the higher up's objective?
Is it pure curiosity and scientific virtue?
Or do they want an efficient weapon?
Was this stated before?
>>
>>42881979

Given that it's a military man in charge, I'd bet the overarching aim is to create "weapons" of some kind. But given the strong presence of scientists on the floor, I suspect that this particular instance is entirely research and scientific - sort of like NASA, I suppose.

You motion for Babsy and Grace to get in on this and before long you have a full on group hug going. It almost feels like one big family, with the exception that the youngest is made of metal and wires. Still, you feel peaceful. This is nice.

However, all things in turn. You eventually relinquish the hug, though not without a slight protest from Pandora. You ready all the materials you need, with Grace having to wipe away a couple tears before you can begin. There is much to learn and so little time to do it. Though it's nice to have Babsy there to observe. You make a mental note to attempt to ask her if she wants to get a cup of coffee sometime without passing out from fear.
Roll 1d100 for today's lesson. Best of 3.

Grace is doing a rather bang-up job on the lesson, with good participation from a happy Pandora and Babsy seems to be having quite a lot of fun observing and things just have a general air of positivity. With the lesson completed, Pandora decides to practice her new skill and hugs Grace in thanks. Grace is overjoyed, obviously, with the zeal of which she hugs her back. There is laughter and shaking and all in all it seems innocent enough.

Then Grace goes a little too far and rolls around with Pandora, not realizing just how delicate she is despite being such a high-tech piece of equipment, and before you can react there is a "thump" and "crack" at the side of the table, with a moment of silence, followed by a panicked Grace repeating "ohmygod ohmygod ohmygod" over and over. She backs away, hands pulled back and eyes unable to focus. You rush over to see what happened, only to see a deep crack in the side of Pandora's head, the lights in her eyes flickering on and off rapidly.

"Doctor...doctor I...I can't see..." she stammers out, her tone slowly increasing in volume and stress. "Doctor, my eyes! Doctor! Doctor, my eyes! I can't see! Help! I can't see!" Shit shit shit. You take her hand, assuring her you're still there, letting her feel your skin as you sit her up. There are several pings on your PDA after a minute, but you're too worried about Pandora to notice. Babsy rushes to her side and helps her stand, taking a closer look at the damage, all the while Grace continues her chorus of "ohmygod" from across the room.

"Maintenance room, now." Babsy barks out and you help her carry Pandora to the bench. She is touching her face now, trying to assess what's wrong. "Doctor, put her into sleep mode, we're going to have to open her up." A quick command later and she fades out, going limp on the table as you hook up the backup power and retrieve all the necessary tools and spare parts.
Roll 1d100 to assist Babsy in the repairs. Best of 3.

Actually, this is a good learning experience to be fair. This is 'pain', and how to deal with it. Again, completely accidental, but accidents will happen, and teaching her (and maybe the suits) to deal with it is important.

"Dammit!" Babsy shouts, all four of her arms working in a blur. You feel like you don't even need to be there, your duties essentially delegated to handing her tools. "Who stocked this damn room?! I have nothing I can use for her optics! I'm not fixing a damn microwave in here, where are all the spare parts?!" She's getting stressed. Another couple of pings on you PDA. You do a quick check.

Gen. Richards: Grace. My office. Now.

227: Christ! I'm sending the twins, bring her to R&D ASAP!
633: We're here. Bring her out.

You put a hand on Babsy's shoulder. "We need to get her to R&D. You guys are better equipped there, right?" She stops for a second, then turns to Pandora. "Yeah...yeah, help me carry her!" You both hoist her up carefully, maneuvering over to the door, but before you can swipe your card it swings open, two security guards waltzing past you to collect Grace. That's not going to be good... but you don't have time to spare. Nor could you really stop them if you tried.

Outside you see the Bobs carrying a makeshift gurney that you and Babsy gently place Pandora on. The three of them start off back to R&D, but you see security practically dragging a distraught Grace off to what you assume is the General's office. Which do you go with?

You call after the three. "I'm going to go with Grace, but you keep me posted on everything that happens! You take good care of her!" One of the Bobs calls back. "She's in good hands, Doc! Bon Chance!"

You never understood why, but the security guys are always in a rush wherever they go, even if they're just doing standard patrolling. It's a little tough to keep up, even with the two of them dragging a sobbing woman, but you do your best to stay hot on their heels until you reach the office. The two men enter and you slip in behind them as they place her firmly in a seat facing the General, salute, then leave, leaving just you, a hysterical girl currently babbling in Chinese, and a very unhappy looking man in uniform.

"Doctor, you were just in here. Unless you have business, I suggest you leave me and Miss Zheng to our discussion, unless you'd like to add another name to the disciplinary hearing." You swallow hard and do your best to stand your ground, despite an increasingly obvious shake in your legs.

"Sir," you begin, shakily walking over to his desk. "I understand the position Grace is in, especially just after I was in here to talk to you. However, what happened in there, like my previous, err, incident, was purely accidental, like a child falling off their bike and scraping their knee. It is bound to happen. However, it is part of life. When that child scrapes their knee, you don't hole them up in their room and keep them from ever riding their bike again. You patch them up, tell them they're okay and let them go back out to play. I think, as far as Pandora-err, TBX-042's development is concerned, she-ah, it needs to experience these hardships. When it happened before, I had a very important talk with her, explaining how accidents can happen and she doesn't have to be afraid of them, just cautious..." The General raises an eyebrow at your little speech, but remains silent. You're not sure if this is good or bad, but he's not yelling yet, so you'll take your small victories as they come.

"Ah, furthermore, I've been thinking that perhaps the chassis we have outfitted might be a little too fragile for some of the activities that could help in the learning process. So, with your blessing, perhaps we could make a new, more durable one?" You give a nervous smile and wait. You wait for what seems like hours, with only the sound of Grace's soft sobbing to cut through the silence. Finally, the General lets out a sigh, shakes his head and speaks. "I can't believe I let dances with androids talk me out of this." He gives a slight chuckle at this. "You win, doctor. But I want a rush on that chassis, understood? No dangerous, potentially expensive maneuvers until it is installed. Understand? Now, take Miss Zheng and go. I have calls to make and paperwork to fill out." You nod enthusiastically and take Grace by the arm, rushing out of the office.

Grace hangs on your arm the entire time you wait in the main hall, thanking you profusely.

It is several hours later before you get a message from R&D telling you they're finished, informing you the repairs went fine, and that Pandora wants to see you. You let out a sigh of relief and have a celebratory hug with Grace. You remind yourself to get R&D a fruit basket or something and make your way over to see how the patient is doing.
