You shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

Klemens is quite fond of that saying, but today he actually gave it meaning as he flips open the small, dull blue book to reveal page after page of drawings depicting how Lords and Ladies greet each other, how they eat, how they dance, and how they dress in pretty, shiny, fluffy, frilly,

"DRESSES!"

Nobles are so lucky! They look so beautiful, so glittery and elegant! Ohh, I can't wait to meet the Baroness.

"Look how cute the bows on this one is!"

Amalia just rolls her eyes as I show her the book. She should be more appreciative of pretty dresses! They're very important! For reasons! Important ones!

"Wh- hey!" She callously snatches the book from out of my hands, slams it shut, then hands it to Klemens who, still glowing redder than the setting sun, looks down awkwardly as he accepts the book. "Thanks Amala- Ami- Ama- Amali-"

"Amalia." She huffs derisively. Odd. Why would Klemens forget her name when he's so smart? He should be good at remembering.

"Sight, rorr- uh, right, sorry."

Amalia lets out a long sigh of annoyance. "Just ask your questions, Nadja."

Eh? Now she's annoyed with me? "I was! Until you took away the book with the-"

"He didn't."

"Eh?"

"He didn't give you the book, Nadja."

I look down to see that my hands are already gripping the book again, right from Klemens' hands who gives me a look of... fear?

"Sorry!" I quickly pull my hands behind my back as I try to give him my best apology smile. "I'll be good now! Promise!"

He doesn't respond, instead turning to the book once more, opening to a page with nothing but text on it. Boring!

"Would you also lik-"

I'm pretty sure I can see the outline of one of the big fluffy dresses through the page.

"No. She's all yours, Klem."

If I could just turn it... But I promised to- Wait.

"Hey, where'd Amalia go?"

Klemens shakes his head at, sighing softly. "We have work to do, Nadja. Focus!"

Right! This is important! I have to make a good impression to help Papa out!

"So what would you like to go over first?" He grips the book extra hard as he asks.

>The 'Additional Pages' section of the notebook is open to you as players to add your notes about anything in the quest that you feel is worth noting. Weird things, notes about characters, anything. My hope is that this will help the notebook to serve not just as a witchy "cookbook" but also as a means for you to communicate to each other and to me what you sense to be important.

>If you want something added to the notebook, just say so here in the thread! Try to make the note as visible to me as possible, and to the extent that you're able try to use Nadja's voice as you perceive it. If you don't feel confident, just write something and I'll edit it before adding it to the notebook!

"How do I do the, uh, greety moves?"

Klemens gives me a puzzled look, as if I said something completely unreasonable. "You mean... A curtsy?"

"I mean like they do in the book!"

With an incredulous look, he slowly flips the page to a drawing of a lady in a big, puffy dress greeting a handsome prince.

"Yes! Like that!"

"That's a curtsy, Nadja. I've seen you do that. Hundreds of times. You wouldn't stop doing that sis taught you a few years ago. You know how to do this."

"Not like that! She does it differently! How do I do that?"

"It's the exact same th-"

"No! Look! Hers looks much better!"

"She's a drawin-"

"It's really important, Klemens! Please teach me! Pleasepleaseplease-"

"Why do you even think I know how to curtsy?"

"-pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease-"

"Kerstin!" "Busy!"

"-pleasepleaseplease-"

"FINE!"

He gets on his feet, sighing deeply as he folds his arms and stares at me.

"Show me your best." He orders stiffly.

"Aren't you going to show me how to-"

"I said I would teach, not show."

But I really wanted to see him do it... Oh well. Maybe I can still make him do it!

Following his lead, I get on my feet and flash him a big smile "Sir Klemens." But he doesn't look amused.

Resolved not to let that bother me, I slowly bow my head, place my right foot behind my left, and bend my knees as far down as I can, before glancing upwards, making sure I've still got my biggest smile on.

"I see." He states coldly.

"What is it? What should I do differently?"

He picks up the book, holding it out for me to look at while pointing at the lady on the drawing.

"There's one important difference between you and her, Nadja. Do you see it?"

>"Is it the dress? I need a prettier dress!"

"Is it the dress? I need a prettier dress! Right?"

I knew I should have gone straight to the market instead! I hope I can still make it before everyone closes shop!

"...Right?"

He shakes his head, a mischievous grin slowly forming on his face.

"Did I mix right and left?"

Again, he shakes his head.

"Then uhm... She... She's a drawing! I need to become a drawing?"

This time he doesn't shake his head, instead just staring at me with a strange look on his face.

"I knew it! I'll need to-"

"Please stop before I start thinking you're actually being serious."

"But I could totally-"

"No." He sits down, resting his forehead on his left hand.

"Look," He points to her head. "The way she looks, just a hint of a smile, soft and elegant. It makes her look like a proper lady. Whereas when you smile, you look..."

There's something wrong with my smile?

"Uh"

I practice smiling everyday and I've been doing it wrong all along?

"I mean..."

And nobody told me that I look like an idiot, just laughing behind my back?

"..Cute."

Eh?

"You're so, uh, cheerful, you know? And full of energy. That's not what a noble lady is like, but-"

"So I need to be less energetic?"

"..No." He puts on a soft smile. "You're fine as you are, really."

"But I at least need a prettier dress, right?"

Again, he shakes his head.

"But their dresses are so much prettier than mine! They're puffy! And frilly! And perfect!"

He grabs the book with both hands, forcefully pulling it out of mine. Wait, when did I- "You're missing the point, Nadja. You're not the Baroness, she is. If you try to act like one, or wear a prettier dress, you'll insult her. And then she'll humiliate you for pretending to be something you're not."

That... makes sense, I think. "So I should just act like I always do?"

>1/2
>>
>>43089787
"Yes, I think that's good. Except more politely. Remember that she's your superior in every way. So always call her 'my lady', never say she's wrong, in fact don't say anything bad about her at all, don't tell her what to do, and... I guess that's my advice?"

"That's all?" I thought I would have to learn everything in that book to be polite...

"Well if I knew anything about the Baroness I could tell you what she likes and dislikes. But the young Baroness is only taking up her mother's duties because the old Baroness has fallen ill. Nobody knows much about her except that she's young. Even younger than you, actually."

"And you're SURE I shouldn't buy a new dress?"

He closes the book, slowly putting it back in his pocket before replying. "Isn't your father already having financial trouble?"

Oh... Right. There's that.

Suddenly, his face seems to transform, giving me a serious look that he rarely makes. "I met your father in the market just last week, you know. I saw the look on his face when he passed by a particularly eye-catching necklace. Anyone could tell what he was thinking. I know you don't mean to make him feel the way he did just then, Nadja, but I think you should know that he does."

"Anyway!" He runs a hand through his hair, wiping the grim look from his face. "I hope I was helpful to you."

In the spirit of the occasion, I decide to practice what I learned, throwing him a big smile as I perform another curtsy, no different from the way I've always done them. "Thank you, kind Sir." I almost manage to suppress my own giggle as I pretend to be a fairy tale princess.

Klemens responds in kind, executing a deep, much more elegant bow, taking my hand as he straightens back up. "My Lady is more than welcome." He speaks with an understated smile.

Unable to contain myself any longer, I burst into laughter as I spring at him, hugging him almost as tight as I would hug Amalia. But only almost. "You're really amazing, Klemens!"

As usual, he responds a little awkwardly, as if he's afraid to hug too tightly. Silly boy, there's no such thing!

"Oh hey." A thought suddenly pops up. "How come you keep a book about court manners in your pocket?"

"Ah well," He releases himself from the hug, just so he can scratch the back of his neck in nervously. "You see-"

"Duh!" Amalia's voice suddenly erupts from down the hall. I thought she had left? "He wants to be a shining prince and rescue his very own beautiful princess, just like in his books!"

Immediately upon the unannounced entry, his face begins to turn a scarlet red. "Tha- That's nit- uh that's not... ah, I mean, I-"

"There's nothing wrong with that!" I yell before he can embarrass himself more. I do owe him, right? "I would love to be a beautiful princess and be saved by a brave prince!"

"Pfft." She mocks. "Guess that means I'm the dragon. Come on Klem, save the princess!"

"I, uh, that's not what, uh," Gee, and he was being so cool before.

"He already did!" I announce as I skip forward, grabbing Amalia by the hand, dragging her away from the poor boy. "Thanks again for the help, Klemens!"

Outside, the sky is slowly shifting from blue to red as the Day Star descends toward the horizon. That means the market will be closing soon and everybody will head home for the day. I guess we should too. As much as I'd like to look at new dresses, Klemens is right. I should be more thoughtful to help Papa.

"Did you have to be so mean, Amalia?"

Even though we're friends, I don't think it was very nice to treat him like that. He was so embarrassed he almost looked like he was going to pass out!

"Does he have to be such a dork?" She retorts, laughing to herself.

"He helped me out a lot! You should be nicer to him!"

"He's just a stupid b-"

I grab her by the shoulders as hard as I can, making sure she knows I'm serious. "Promise to be nicer, Amalia!"

She squints her eyes at me, annoyed. This goes on for several long moments, interrupted only by an embarrassing growl from my hungry stomach, before she finally lets in. "Fine, because YOU asked, I'll try to leave him alone. Now can we move on?"

Affirmed that this is as much as I'll get from her, I turn back around, briefly wondering where we were supposed to be going before colliding abruptly with a tall, black creature suddenly appearing from the right.

Despite being soft to the touch, the black-clad stranger hardly even flinches from the impact, even as I stumble backwards unto my butt. A thin, pale hand of assistance descends from the figure, and a perfectly calm and elegant voice speaks. "Please forgive my clumsiness, young Miss."

Accepting the hand, I look up to get a look at the stranger. The stranger, dressed in a frilly black and white dress, is as still as a statue as I rise back unto my feet, then suddenly shifts into a curtsy exactly like the ones on the drawings. Except that she is not a noble.

"You're a maid! That is so cool!"

She responds with the smallest nod I have ever seen. "I serve my Lady Lucia, heart and soul."

"Wow! You work for the Baroness! That's funny, I'm supposed to see her tomorrow!"

She glances down at me momentarily, the replies, still as unmoving as a statue. "I am certain my Lady will be humored to receive one such as yourself. Now if you'll excuse me, I must continue my errands."

Wait. Errands. Today is... and that means... "Oh no! It's my turn to make dinner and I have no idea what to make!"

The maid stops just a few steps away, apparently overhearing. "If it pleases the young Miss, I could provide you with ideas in exchange for your assistance with my errands. I loathe to admit it, but I am already delayed and could use a hand."

"Sure, that sounds great!"

"Excellent," She pulls out a long slip of paper from her sleeve. A very long... "Then we shall divide the list in three."

I may have made a mistake.

-

My name is Baroness Lucia von Burchwald, and I am..

My name is Baroness Lucia von Burchwald, rightful heir to the Barony of Burchwald, and I am not afraid.

"My name is Baroness Lucia von Burchwald, rightful heir to the Barony of Burchwald, and I am NOT afraid!"

A knock on the door and Angeline steps through. In a single glance, she seems to catch sight of every one of my insecurities, baring my entire soul, all of my fears. And with a soft smile and a nod, she seems to banish every one of them, even if just for a moment.

"Young Lady Lucia, the Lent ambassador to see you."

Okay, deep breath. I can do this. I was born to do this.

"Let him in." I reply, mimicking her stone cold tone.

No good has ever come from a Lent, but refusing an audition would do even more harm. No more has Angeline slid the door open before the man barges through, as boisterous and unkempt as one would expect of his kind.

"Pfahahaha! What's this now! The old lady has left a baby in charge of her lands?"

What did he just call me? In MY home? "How d-"

Behind him, Angeline shakes her head softly, before giving me another of her encouraging smiles. She's right, of course. I shouldn't lower myself to his level.

"Sir Ambassador, if you came merely to trade insults I would suggest you visit the barracks. You may find the atmosphere there more familiar."

>1/2
>>
>>43092643
"HAH!" The ambassador roars, not unlike a wild beast. "The puppy has teeth, does she? Then perhaps the puppy is also aware of the vile infestation ravaging her land. If not I shall gladly enlighten her."

"Witches, your puppyness! Burchwald is crawling with them, threatening the livelihood of your people and ours! My Lord understands of course, that eliminating such a threat single handedly may be beyond you, so he offers to do it for you. Quite generous, wouldn't you say?"

"You're asking me to allow your armies to march through my land and hunt down my people, Ambassador."

"Not people! Witches! Foul, mass-murdering, witches!"

Now I know he just came to taunt me. There is no more reason to be polite. "Yes, yes, we all remember the embarrassing outcome of your latest aggression against the Empire."

Heehee, look at him twitch.

"And despite your manners, I will be kind to you today and say 'no', that you may spared any further embarrassment at the hands of our -legal citizens-."

Heeh, such a rich color of red his face takes! Even Angeline is struggling to compose herself as he leaves wordlessly, but not silently. Ah, if not for his Lord's armies his head would be decorating our walls now!

-

"And that's how I learned the recipe!" I finish explaining.

Papa nodded along at the entire story, never wasting as much as a moment to speak instead of eating the delicious food.

"It is quite something." He hums from the bottom of his belly. "I do hope you wrote it down!"

"You're right!" I jump out of my chair to pull my notebook from my backpack. " I need to do write it down before I forget!"

Let's see, first you... Why is Amalia coughing like that? I hope it's not something that's wrong with the food!

"Say Nadja, where did you get that book? It looks quite expensive."

Uh oh.

"It was a gift from a-"

"From me!" Amalia shouts, even with her mouth full of food.

"Ah, from your trip to the capital?" Papa seems much more relaxed now. Guess he believes her.

"Mh." She confirms.

"That's very generous of you, Amalia. It must have cost you a lot of money for such a well-made book!"

"Mhmm!" She confirms again. But she didn't pay for anything! She's just taking credit for the gift!

"I hope you appreciate your friend, Nadja. Not everyone is so lucky to have friends as great as yours!"

But... I was going to...

"Well, I'm sure you two have plenty of catching up to do, so I'll handle the dishes tonight. Thank you for the wonderful meal, Nadja. And for my daughter's gift, Amalia."

"You're welcome." She says with a smile. She's just trying to help isn't she? Trying to be a good friend. But right now I kind of wish she wasn't. Maybe I'll tell him next time.

Amalia is first to depart while I finish jotting down the recipe. A few moments later, I say good night to Papa as well. Time for my favorite part of sleepover to begin! I feel myself shifting into a skip back to my room. I can hardly wait to-

"Is that a bedroll?"

"Yes?" Amalia replies, mystified.

"Bu- but I thought we were going to..."

"We're almost grown ups, Nadja."

"But... I guess you're right. It wouldn't be proper to share a bed. I just thought it would be fun, just like when we were little!"

Without any further words she slips under her blanket. Did I ruin the mood?

"You still haven't told me about your trip to the capital." I say, almost whimpering, as I crawl into my own bed.

She turns, her mischievous smile back where it belongs. "Well, I found this AMAZING bookstore-"

"You made that up!"

"Fine fine, here's something that did happen..."

Look, there's no-one better to cuddle with than Amelia, and we can't not cuddle, it's just unreasonable!

This might seem weird, but I think the fairest way to resolve this tie is to go with the middle option. That way, both extremes get at least some of what they want.

Tie was fixed so it's fine

Agreed.

Are you saying that instead of going with one of the most picked options, the compromise should be the least picked option?
>>
>>43093921
Because most voters want to sleep on the floor, and most voters don't want to sleep under the same blanket.
>>
>>43093877
Lying on floor is just unhealthy
>>
>>43093877
Well, i hope you're not still going for the compromise when there was a last vote that tipped the scales before you wrote this...

Hnnngh, this is so unfair! Just because we're older suddenly we can't have sleepovers like we used to? Is that even a rule? I've never heard about that rule!

My line of thought is pulled away by a light rustling sound as Amalia shifts under her blanket, followed by a soft, almost unheard sigh. I knew! She's not comfortable either. Because sleeping alone sucks! And just like she had my back earlier tonight, it's my duty to have her back now. Well, technically her front, but that's just details.

Carefully and as silently as I can manage, I roll up my blanket and lie down next to her. She doesn't seem to wake up, even as I shift myself into a more comfortable position on the edge of her bedroll.

I kind of wish she had. We used to fall asleep just like this, staring into each others eyes as we told stories and jokes, and if we ever ran out of anything to say, we'd have a tickling match!

But this is fine too. Just knowing that she's here beside me makes this the best bed in the world. I could sleep here forever.

A loud banging on the door followed by Papa's voice finally calls me back to the waking world. "You're going to be late for Sunday School!"

A yawn and rush of warm air against my face lets me know that I'm not the only one to have slept in. Slowly sliding my eyes open I see that dawn has long since passed. Joyously I watch as Amalia slowly wakes as well, revealing that beautiful pair of amber eyes. "Nadja? What are-"

A soft tug at my right hand directs both of our eyes downward to our entangled fingers. Reluctantly, I let go of her hand and she pulls it back, just staring at it as if she didn't recognize it.

"I slept great!" I announce as I rise from the, quite honestly not very comfortable, bedroll, setting about getting dressed.

"Yeah..." She replies, still just staring at her hand. "Me too."

"Come on! We need to hurry! Today's lesson is about..."

And this is definitely where the thread should end! I'm letting you guys choose the subject for Sunday School because info dumps you never even asked for are just boring!

Also next thread is being moved to Sunday, for thematic reasons!

Thanks for playing on yet another off-schedule day, and I hope to see you next time!
