Greetings fa/tg/guys. This quest is in the process of being transferred from /k/ to its proper place, /tg/. To summarize, this quest incorporates the popular culture and knowledge of /k/ into a game of survival and exploration. Rather than pick up from where I left off in the last thread, I'm starting from scratch for the benefit of new players who might be able to provide fresh input.

It has been roughly one generation since "the habbening", (at least, that's how it's referred to in your house). Your mother and father remember the world as it once one, a place both marvelous and terrifying, filled with wonders of technology, engineering and entertainment. As much as people complained, they had it much better back then, at least that's the one thing the old folk agree on.

Your father identified himself as a "/k/ommando" and attributed his prewar hobbies and pursuits to his success and survival. He was a gun collector, an amateur survivalist and a general jack of all trades. Once the dust settled and new groups began to form, his once full time occupation of "survivor" fell to the wayside and the old jobs of ancient civilization came back in full force. So your family became share croppers, farmers who worked the soil to earn their keep and the right to armed protection. A once impressive firearms collection was sold to buy agriculture tools, seeds and feed. Now all that's left is his prized rifle, known simply as "Nugget", which hangs above the fireplace mantle. Its occasionally used for hunting, but for the most part it sits as farmhouse decoration.

Until now.

A large group of nomadic raiders have been causing trouble for neighboring villages to the west. Your mother and father were conscripted for the county's defense months ago, leaving you alone to fend for yourself. The canned foods in the cellar have started to run thin, fewer villagers can be seen through town, and the plumes of smoke out in the distance are a foreboding reminder of what might happen to the life you've grown accustomed to.

What's on the agenda: Decide a name for yourself and figure out a game plan. You can't work the fields by yourself, you have no currency or valuable trade goods and the days are growing shorter, colder while nights have only gotten darker and lonelier.

Here's your inventory. The buck knife and hatchet were your father's favorite tools, the old alice pack contains three changes of clothes, including socks, underwear and undershirts. Rope, string, tender box and a weatherproof tarp are included alone with a bedroll and sleeping bag. All of these were prewar items, and they've held up pretty well for the 50 or so years they've been in use. The Nugget is dated 1941 and you have exactly 20 rounds of surplus Russian ammo.

And here's the map. Pretty self explanatory.
>>
>>43113577
I should mention that the empty circles represent farmsteads and homesteads, roughly five to ten people per dot. At least, that's how it was before the recent conflict.
>>
>>43113613
Whats the mayor been up to with the threat of raiders and fleeing traders?
>>
>>43113782
He's been getting drunk on his ass every day, at least that's the rumor about town. Mayor Dawson is about the only fat person you've ever met, as to why he's the "big dick in charge" has always been a mystery. He feeds and houses the town guards and keeps them occupied with drink and women. There used to be about twenty patrolmen employed at a time. Nowadays there's about five, and they're senior members who weren't fit enough for conscription. He was a decent mayor in times of peace and plenty but his respect and authority has waned.
>>
>>43113577
I think that we should try and head to the farm/home closest to us to the south-west. Check up on if there is anyone still there.
>>
>>43113577
It's easier if you give us a list of choices to start things off, with the occasional option for write-ins.

This makes it easier to get into and understand the setting, and keeps the plot moving.

>Gather some like-minded fellows; we're survivors, surely we have people we can depend on.
>>
>>43113913
What do you wish to take along with you? It's about seven o'clock in the morning, the sun is shining right in your eyes and its pleasantly warm for once.

Oh, I forgot to mention, the last thread "decided" on the name of Cosmoline, or Cosmo for short. If you guys want a different name for the protagonist then I'm open for suggestions.
>>
>>43113883
So we could try and rally the patrolmen to action? We could try and find their sons or daughters first to give us weight for them to assist us in being ready to push off the raiders/kill them/take control of them
>>
>>43113972
You don't know how many raiders there are, what equipment they're using or how deadly they are. The only news you get is about whatever town or village had been burned, sacked or pillaged, and those announcements are usually at least a week old.
>>
>>43113577
I reckon we should gather our gear and enough food and water for a couple days and go have a nose around whichever of those two farms is the easiest to get to. See if anyone there knows more about the situation.
>>
>>43113965
We should take the nugget with ammo, the axe and the tarp. We shouldn't be out for too long and we will likely be home by mid-day provided that nothing out of the ordinary happens.
>>
>>43114041
Are we a good shot? Presumably we shot rabbits and shit for dinner? We any good at snares?
>>
OP, I came here from /k/. I'll participate more later, I'm busy but we should keep this going.

After some consideration you decide to see what your neighbor Old Craig is up to. For safety you take the Nugget and its accompanying ammo pouches, along with the hatchet which you hang from its head on your belt. The alice pack was your old man's "bug out bag", prepacked with the minimum of tools, clothes and provisions for a brief trek into the wilderness. It wasn't too heavy or cumbersome once secured to your shoulders, though the canteen on your belt contains enough water to last a couple of days, but that's a conservative estimate. There's always been clean creeks running through these fields and forests, so you're not too worried about hydration.

A half hour's trek brings you up the gravel path to Old Craig's farm, or what's left of it. The wizened farmer is a widower and something like a town elder, though he rarely makes the trip to town to voice his opinion on things. Some are making bets as to when he's finally gonna croak, but his eyesight and hearing are as good as any man's, and he still makes a living hunting and trapping for furs and leathers.

His log cabin can be seen at the top of a hill, partially obscured by brush and young trees. Smoke hazes up from the chimney, and the rank smell of tanning leathers emanates downwind in your direction.
>>
>>43114429
Let's continue up the road to the farm to the north west.
>>
>>43114429
Maybe we should knock on the door?
>>
>>43114644
You can't see the door from here, that would require walking closer, about fifty yards uphill to spot the front of the cabin.
>>
>>43114429
We ever talked to Craig before?

How much of our dad's skills have we inherited?
>>
>>43114665
I thought we could see the house.

I got a bad feeling.
>>
>>43114691
Farmers know their neighbors by necessity. He's traded with your parents on numerous occasions and even helps during harvest time. He looks mean but that's because he had a hard life. He lost his original family a long time ago and never bothered to remarry. He doesn't treat you special just because you're young, either. Craig is known as one of the better shots in town.
>>
>>43114691
You can pretty much do everything your dad used to do. He made sure to impart his knowledge and experience, but it's hard to remember everything. Dad would get pretty mean at times, and the two of you had your fair share of physical conflicts. You could never beat him, though.
>>
>>43114736
I get the feeling your definition of 'house' isn't 'fortified hidden underground bunker, or similarly-defensible emplacement atop high ground, as circumstances dictate'.
>>
>>43114842
Alright. So in this circumstance, we want to tip him off that someone is approaching so he doesn't react in surprise, let him know that we're doing so deliberately so that he knows we're not hostile, and preferably not tip off anyone else who might be in the vicinity that we're ripe for the shanking.

We any good at bird calls? What would be blatantly out-of-season for anyone who knows shit about birds?
>>
>>43114905
You're not bad at owls, quail and crows. The common means of announcing your presence in rural areas is to cup your hands to your mouth and yell "YO!" or, for Anglophiles, "OI!"

As you trudge up the hill you suddenly hear a familiar voice shout out from the open cabin door. "Cosmo? Whatcha doin' with that gun, boy?" It's unmistakably Craig, though there's trepidation in his voice, and you hear what sounds like a shotgun being loaded and readied.

>>43115904
Most farm boys do.
>>
bump
>>
>>43115992
What cover is there near the log cabin? Can we take a few steps back and move behind some sort of artificial cover, or are we out in the open? We just want to be cautious and have somewhere to duck down, in case he tries shooting out at something.
>>
>>43116738

There's a rather large boulder you could get some good cover behind, about ten feet to your left. Your rifle is currently shouldered and not "at hand". Old Craig soon emerges from the dark of the cabin, standing beneath the canopy of the front porch, a double barreled side-by-side shotgun held about his waist, pointed in your general direction. As always, his intentions are difficult to ascertain, especially at about a hundred feet away.
>>
>>43116823
Hundred feet away? That's not bad, let's keep our head down and move to the boulder quickly. Then we can communicate from there.
>>
>>43116889
You leap over towards the boulder, crash through some brush and catch your ankle in a thorny vine, causing you to trip and fall down on your shoulder. Luckily, the boulder stops you from sliding down the hill. Old Craig can only laugh at your clumsiness. "Boy, I thought you done went crazy, but now I see you're just a fool." Rifle hung on his shoulder, he gingerly walks your way with a rare smile plastered across his face. "What brings you to my neck of the woods, anyhow? Trade? Advice? Gossip?" The old man offered an outstretched hand to help you to your feet.
>>
>>43117046
Tell the old guy we're just checking on him, since there's some shit going down. Also, see if we can get a look at the shotgun?
>>
>>43117092
You stick out your hand and he heaves your body up out of the grass, leaving you standing on both feet. The shotgun slung over his shoulder is a Stoeger coach gun, 12 gauge with a shortened barrel, ideal for self defense.

"Just wanted to check up on you, Craig," you say as soon as you catch your breath, "there's been trouble from the west and a lot of town folk have left. Well, those that didn't get taken away to fight."

"Fuckin' contracts," he mutters under his breath. Old Craig shakes his head as his mood quickly turns sour. "I suspect you're stupid enough t' want to do something about it, too. I'm not yer daddy so I can't stop you, but I will tell you this: don't join the militia. It'll only lead t' you gettin' kilt. I'd run away if I was you." He spits a wad of brown tobacco juice onto the grown to make his point.
>>
>>43117354
Tell Craig that everyone's fucked anyways if people don't fight against the raiders. Ask him what alternatives there are, since running away seems to just be delaying the inevitable. Also, ask him what he plans on doing?
>>
>>43117424
To be continued tomorrow, hopefully with more interest from other players.
>>
>>43117699
Good try, OP.
>>
As much as I like the Nagant, we should see about upgrading to an SKS. Or an SVT-40.
>>
bump
>>
>>43117941
This isn't Canada, so you're going to be hard pressed to find an SVT-40. SKS's are easy enough to find, though.

>>43117769
Thanks for the support. This is my first earnest attempt at a quest thread, and it seems I picked the wrong time to do it, or maybe they way I went about it was too boring for other players. I certainly want to keep going, but I'd like more than one reply every half hour, (at least that's the rough rate I remember from last night). Tell me, what should I do to increase my chances of success? Any ya'll got advice?
>>
>>43121513
I hear 'get a twitter' a lot so people who saw the last thread and want to join next time know when it is. Apart from that, it seems to be mostly a matter of staying around a while 'till people recognize it and get to know the setting. Except for known namefags, I don't think it's typical to get more than one or two players on the first quest.
>>
>>43121661
Oh, Twitter? That's another one of those "things" I never bothered to fuck with. *sigh* I guess it's time to get with the times. So I use it to announce to subscribers that I'm about to run a game?
>>
>>43121700
Generally yes. Always best go give heads-ups in advance. If you -know- you'll have time to make the thread in a day, throw out a general update saying so, then again when you're within a few hours of doing it, and potentially finally when it's up if you want the greatest possible turn out of followers for any given thread.
>>
>>43122273
Understood. When are peak hours for quest threads, or /tg/ in general?
>>
>>43122458
I tend to run my quests around 5ish EST. let's you get a couple europeans, and most of the Americans.

I've never actually tested the best times though
>>
>>43122527

the twitter is @kommando_quest

I'll be returning this afternoon to continue the story. Till then I'll be drawing some more NPC pics and maybe a few landscapes for the sake of atmosphere.
