You sit at a table in a small break room in the back of Mackleroy’s a brewpub that has recently hired you to be a dishwasher.

“Ok kid” grunts a portly, older man easily in his 60s as he walks into the room, a comparison to a dwarf in fantasy isn’t a stretch. “It’s your first day on the job and I don’t want you thinking this’ll be a cakewalk, we’ve lost a lot of people for having that attitude” he takes a look at your application. “tell me about yourself kid”

I don't care about gender, I just love the concept of a pro-dishwasher. Especially one that talks as much bullshit as a candidate on The Apprentice.

You reach out your hand to shake and introduce yourself "I'm John, pleasure to meet you."

"Pleasure to meet you, the name's Mack, so again tell me about yourself, what do you like to do? Do you think you have what it takes to work this job?"

"I certainly hope I do, I'd like to think of myself as someone who is always willing to try and learn new things, I've never done any serious dishwashing before aside from family gatherings so this is a new experience for me"

"I like the way you think kid, hopefully you'll get along with the other kitchen staff, it's before the dinner rush so you won't need to worry about dishes just yet"

"If you don't mind Mack, I'd like to meet the rest of the staff, I want to get a feel for my coworkers."

"Sounds about right for your orientation anyways, they're all a good bunch I can assure y-!"

You both suddenly hear a loud crash of metal outside the breakroom presumebly from the kitchen you hear a gruff voice yelling

"Stop telling customers they can have a fried fish sandwich when it isn't on the menu! if they want a fucking fish sandwich they can go to fucking Crimson Shrimp!"

"Just make the damn sandwich Nick I have no time for your bitching!" shouted a feminine voice assumed to be a server.

Mack looks a bit embarrassed "... that was Nick and Jenna, they get in spats every now and again" Mack quickly changed the mood and patts your shoulder "come on! lets go introduce yourself!"

"I might be having second thou-ghts!" you're interupted from your sentence to Mack dragging you out into the hall and in view of the pair fighting amongst on another, who have now turned their heads to you.

"Nick, Jenna, this is John, he'll be our new dishwasher be sure to treat him well." Mack turns to you, I gotta get going but these two will show your around, good luck!" he proceeds to powerwalk out the back door and leave you to the dogs.

There is an awkward silence amongst the three of you until Nick speaks up.

"So you're the new dishwasher eh? Hope you're up to snuff, the last one walked out during our friday dinner rush and we've been getting by on servers washing dishes and these sluts no nothing about clean dishes. I'm Nick, dinner rush won't be til another hourso you can get taught on the machine quick" Nick says and appears to be waiting for a response from Jenna.

Jenna just has a look of disgust but not surprise from Nick's Statements.

"Nice to meet you Nick...I'm John" you turn to Jenna and give her a smile "I heard you're Jenna, correct?"

"Yeah, thanks for coming on, not having a dishwasher gets to be a hassle at times, at least you're cute" she winks at you "the back of the house is usually pretty ugly just take a look at Nick here!"

Nick gives Jenna a glare but holds his tongue. 'This work environment seems somewhat hostile, can I survive just one shift???' you think to yourself.

"The other two cooks Wally and Kim will be here shortly, We'll get you acquainted when they show up." Nick informs you while finishing up the fish sandwich that Jenna had ordered "order up Jenna"

Jenna takes the sandwich and exits "thank you Nick and good luck John, you'll need it."

'Why do I get the feeling that I'm gonna die?'

The backdoor burst open and a pair of cooks walk though the door, a short girl probably in her early thirties and a guy your height at about the same age as you.

"whats-up! Nick who's the new kid!? " says the guy a boisterous one he is.

"This is John, he's the new dishwasher don't scare him off now"

"why'd I ever do that??" he turns to you and holds out his hand "the name's Wally lets be friends"

You hold out your hand and give it a shake.

"Nice to meet you too, hope we get along"

"of course we will, and pint-size over here is Ki-!" The short girl proceeds to punch Wally in the kidney and he goes down like a jenga tower.

"The name's Kim, don't call me short", she glares at you.

"noted so who's teaching me to use the machine?"

Nick pipes up, "that'll be me, also if we're not busy and you get overwhelmed I might help ya"

"I appreciate that" you say sighing in relief.

Nick points to a countertop equipped with a pressure washer, a grated sink, a washing machine, and a shelf for cups.

"This is your dish pit most people just call it the pit, the machine is called Eva around here, treat Eva well and she'll take care of you." Nick says grabbing a plate with gravy on it out of a tub that has a green liquid in it. "that is the soak tub, usually servers will drop or chuck in plates without thought and be on their merry way, it soaks plates with dried on junk so it's easier to spray" Nick places the plate on a blue rack and begins to spray the plate and the gravy slides off with ease "other plates will be grimier than this will be difficult but that's learned in time. He reaches into a smaller tub next to the soak tub and pulls out a ladle. "Normally, Silverware goes in here and that's done in one big pile with it's own rack, but utensils are placed in here too." he holds the hose as if to pass it off to you "Here, try it I think you'll get it quick"

'uhh alright' you think as you step up to the pit.

Despite your lack of experience you manage to spray of the queso on every part of the ladle.

"Wow! you're probably the first person to not spray themselves spraying a ladle on their first try, good hob" Nick roughly slaps your back in congratulations.

"Thanks..." a slight blush forms at the compliment, you never took compliments super well. You start pulling out a couple plates of varying sizes and attempt to spray them off as well and you manage to get the crud off all of them with ease, now the rack is full.

"Now what you're going to want to do is slide it into the machine and Eva will do the rest" Nick says looking at the kitchen waiting for orders. "I think you got this, when your shift is done meet me at the bar for your shifter."

"Shifter?" you ask. you've never heard of that before.

Wally pipes in "a Shifter is a free drink at the end of your shift, you get soda for free already so this is alcoholic stuff"

"Well I'll have to take you up on that" you say as you slide the rack into the machine, you slide the doors down and the machine roars to life, startling you a bit.

The cooks all laugh each mentioning that's typical to be startled the first time, the red light on the machine dies out.

"The cycle is finished lift up the doors and the dishes should be clean." Kim says " sometimes the fucking servers cut corners and leave some gunk on and expect us to clear it off so don't do that" she mutters with a grimace, she looks like she would kill you if you tried to fuck with her.

"Not in my life!" you say to appease the little ball of anger. "I'll try my best for all of you." you give a thumbs up to the three.

The three of them smile and relax a bit.

'Well, these guys don't seem so bad guess we'll get to know them'

"Oh" you remember "is music ok? also what about hats?"

"Music for dishwashers is fine usually just keep it in one ear, Our last good dishwasher had them in both ears cos' he'd have sensory overload and shut down if he didn't" Nick said the other two nod in approval.

Wally interjects "As for hats, hats are required for kitchen staff but you can wear whatever to cover your hair, like I wear a bandana, and Kim just wears a ponytail.

"guys! a BUS drove in here! there's 30 people in the lobby!"

The cooks all mutter and groan.

"What!? no fucking call ahead!? Typical ASSHOLES!" he yells at the offchance the patrons hear him. "Thanks Margo for the Heads up, Well kid, looks like your work starts early. get an apron and get ready for a lot of work." You recall the interview telling you about the company, a brew pub with it's own brewery in house, a bar, and a separate dining are, you're primary job would just be cleaning back of the house and washing dishes, the front of the house cleaning and bussing would go to the servers, hosts and bussers.

You mentally psyche yourself up before the plates come but first some music

"Alright let's do this!" you tie your apron on and wait for the wave, Margo and Jenna come back and ring in appetizers, looks like 5 Items, the ticket is huge.

"3 Nachos with chicken, and 2 cheesecurds!" Nick shouts, Wally and Kim burst into action reaching into coolers and pulling out ingredients, they prepare the food with no effort at all it's almost an art what they do, even if it's just appetizers.

'I got this, I should be fine right!?'

a few minutes pass and the appetizer dishes come back a stack of 5 large plates and 30 small plates enough for 2 racks.

You pile up your dishes from largest at the bottom to smallest at the top, you were told some dishes go to the front of the house and some to the back, so you made two piles for each. you squeeze passed the cooks and put the plates in their proper space.

Servers comeback with more plates and your pit is starting to pile up a bit, you bring the front of house dishes to their spots and return to your post.

"Thanks a bunch John, we appreciate it when someones around to help out" Said nick with the others nodding in agreement.

'he said my name' you think to yourself a little giddy. as you continue to do dishes the server who splashed you, Kate takes her still full coffee cups and dumps them on the counter, the liquid pools up and just looks unpleasing.

>Hey, could you please dump in the sink next time?

No worries man, I actually need the criticism, I have decent spoken word storytelling ability but written is a different story so it's a skill i need to develop.
>>
>tfw you washed dishes for so many years you could literally say your an expert on the subject

It's all about the rhythm. You gotta match up with how much the cooks work, how quickly the customers eat and how fast you can change out carts filled with dirty dishes.

Check not only what their busting out in the lobby, but also keep an out on the tubs that the cooks like to throw all their dirty dishes into.

Also don't let waiters or waitresses run you around. Only let managers do that.

However it is a good idea to pretty become everyone's favorite. You get hours you want, you can get a pay raise if you are extremely proficient.

...Goddamn I don't miss that job but it taught me a lot.

Oddly my former boss is also named John. Weird.

As she's about to leave for her tables, "Hey, could you please dump in the sink next time?" She turns to you slowly and gives you a glare like you pissed in her cornflakes

"I don't have time for that I got better things to do" she walks away after her comment you took slight offense to the statement the cooks all look at you.

Kim walks over and pats you on the back "Don't worry, she's just a giant cunt, most of the other servers aren't awful no matter what Nick says"

"They're all a bunch of SLUTS anyways, Don't pay them any mind John" Nick shouted over

"Thanks guys, you're really nice underneath it all.

You realize dishes are starting to piling up above the tub, there must be at least 6 trays worth. You're starting to get anxious.

Oh and speaking of tools we need.

We need dish carts, at least four all filled with tubs. Tell the girls to put dishes into the bottom two if their plates, bowls, monkey dishes (little bowls used for condiments) and such.

The cups and salad glass plates go on top in a tub that is sectioned off in two (with cup part being larger then the glass plates) and silver ware and trash go onto the sides respectively.

Also we need a clean cart for drying dishes to take out to the cooks and the serving staff. That way we can load it up and serve it all once.

Broken dishes happen. Hell I had an entire cart filled with clean dishes get knocked over because a kid decided to rush out around a corner.

Like the one in my picture...only with the middle tub on top and two regular tubs in the middle.

Also how're the towels here? And do we recycle pop cans and bottles? Do we have to go and change out the soda machine and the CO2?

1/6 Trays done 11/15 San
You do your best to clear out as many trays as you can but a lot of these plates have some really difficult junk.

'well now I can say I hate Queso... and French onion soup?' you think as you spray off the melted cheese and attempt to use a scourpad for the rest, Kates rudeness is starting to wear on you a bit but you push it to the side.

The rush itself is done but dishes will be coming back for a while. Nick walks out the kitchen as Kim and Wally start piling up dish pans from their area. and placing them on the dish counter.

"You have a soap hose and a faucet for hot water to soak these pans, this is a part of closing procedures, Nick is cleaning your bathrooms tonight" Kim says "also..."

You look to Kim as if she's about to say something profound. "hmm?"

She turns around and avoids eye contact "good job there..." she murmurs, almost unhearable but you hear it, she might be starting to like you.

Wally comes into the conversation "yeah so you can let those soak for a bit and finish up your pit. or you can start cleaning the back.

I guess it's better if we roll a D20 and see how many trays we get done, since it piles up quite fast. This discards the use of damage rolls.
A low roll hits us on sanity, for a set amount. This allows for crits and crit fails as well, making more use of the perks of the character. What do you think?
>>
>>43171332
You can still have dishes even if you don't open.

Cook's stuff is generally all the containers they have. Not to mention when they need to flip all their sauces, meats and such.

John will learn to fucking hate cheese with a passion. He will learn to hate the boat dishes they cook stuff directly in and become a pain in the fucking ass, he will learn to hate all the unnecessary bull shit they will make him clean and then get pissed off because he doesn't do extra cleaning jobs every day.

After a second of pondering you announce "I think I'll finish my pit, that's my current job at the moment might as well do it" you say, Kim and Wally look at one another then back to you. "What!?" you ask wondering what they're planning.

"You'll fit in just fine" the both reply in unison.

"I hope so" you smile to them, With no more dishes coming in, you finish up the rest of the dishes by the time Nick comes back from the bathrooms.

"welp bathrooms are done, just letting ya know John, we try to finish at the same time we close so you got a half hour" Nick explains to you.

"Half hour? That's enough time right?" you look at the pans and the back kitchen.

"If you want I can help you with either the cleaning or the washing, your call, I think you can handle it, you handled the dinner rush just fine."

Well it wasn't off all day. It had power when it opened and it went off while we had customers. Plus we were waiting for them to repair whatever the cause of the outtage was and wanted to stay open.

However when it seemed like it wasn't going to happen, they had me clean up the rest of the stuff in the dark and go home.

Plus we used our non-electrical oven to cook shit when we needed to and still did delivery because the phones were still working oddly enough.

"Alright well we're done with our closing procedures so we'll be waiting a bit to see if any orders come in then we're meeting in the bar, be sure to come for that shifter" say's Nick the other two nodding in agreement.

"You did good and I hope you can handle Friday well enough to stay after" Wally says who is then punched by Kim

'What's wrong with Fridays? Is it super busy on Fridays, even more than I'd expect?' Thoughts race in your mind until Kim interrupts you thinking.

"Don't worry kid, Friday isn't that bad it's just Friday Night Fish Fry, all you can eat, no big deal" Kim says to, which brings your some relief.

You finish the pans and place them where the rest of the pans are.

"Oh, right be sure to clean your pit, The closing manager Jesse will be in to check you out" Nick informs.

The grease isn't the real enemy. It's the fact that everything needs to be scrubbed with a steel wool in order for it to come off. Fried stuff likes to stick to plates and when they cook stuff directly onto it (like boat dishes) then its even harder to clean off.

I'd put put it through the machine to get it loosened and then scrub it and then put it back through and even then it won't be clean unless you've put a lot of elbow grease into it.

"Not bad" says nick giving you a pat on the back "I'll get Jesse just hang tight" Nick exits the kitchen to the managers office

You lean to Kim and ask "hey, what's this Jesse guy like?"

She ponders for a moment probably looking for the proper descriptive word "He kinda looks like Jesus and acts like-"

You hear a door close loudly and wouldn't you know it, Jesus with a business suit comes out and looks at you "ey yo whatsup mang, you the new guy?" he says his accent is odd but intelligible

"uh yeah, John. I assume you're Jesse?" this guy seems odd but probably a good guy

"yeh mang, I'm actually front of house manager so I work on the servers schedules and shit" he says while walking around the kitchen checking coolers, floors, dishes, everything. "alright, you guys are good" he looks at you "take it easy brother"

"yeah he's an odd one but he's a good guy" Wally responds. "anyway lets drink!"

That's pretty inaccurate

4.5 then.

Because when I tuned into the right tunes, had was blazed as fuck I could work back to back twelve hour shifts for weeks. Hell I had to after three of the people I put neck out for got fired.

Didn't stop me from recommending more people (which all but like two ended up a massive and almost comedic failure).

for about two months i was the only dishwasher then a week or two we got a new guy, but walked out on Friday, was not happy to come in on day off, especially to a Friday, surprisingly the shift was worse than my 12 hour shift on Sunday which was only bad cause my hands were raw from water and steel wool.

That's why I'm afraid of recommending people

I hate it when people walk out.

Especially when its unjustified.

Some times I'm okay with it but those are special cases.

Don't. Don't recommend friends or family.

Especially if you value your relationships with those people.

The worst I've had is a dishwasher quit with no notifications, well aside from telling me he was thinking about quitting for awhile, but I always told him to at least give a 1 weeks if not 2 because that's fucked up.
Then he did it anyways.
