It's late in the afternoon, and Hanto has just returned from the mission regarding the escort of the Hidden Cloud prisoner, that resulted in being Makoto. Your sensei wonders what sort of form he's going to have to fill out to accurately explain all the shit that went down. He lights up a smoke as he steps through the gates of the Hidden Leaf, weakly waving to the guards. As he's trotting along, a voice calls down. It's resting on the edge of a building above him, and he covers his eyes with a hand to look. Through the glare of the sun, he can see Mirai's outline. The female Jounin leaps down, and lands beside Hanto.

She seems serious. "You're back. Good. The Hokage is searching for this year's Genin Sensei, we all need to report there immediately."

Hanto groans, rolling his neck back slightly as he exhales smoke into the air. "Come on, what is this? I have some actual work to be doing, what could Lord Hokage want.."

Mirai starts walking away, leading him. She scoffs. "You already forgot? The Chunin exams are coming up."

Hanto shrugs. "So what? My squad has only been Genin for a couple of months, they don't have the experience they need to compete. None of ours do."

Mirai laughs. "Don't you remember how Lord Hokage's class was? They all took the Chunin Exams the first chance they had."

Hanto grumbles. "That's right, and everyone failed except for Shikamaru Nara. And who would expect anything less from the head of the Nara clan?"

Mirai looks over. "I heard that he wasn't so reputable at that time. He even lost his match, but apparently his superior tactics are what allowed him to pass."

Hanto strokes his chin. "You mean, even though he failed, he passed because he proved he was as mentally capable as any Chunin? Hmm.."

"I know that you're thinking of Takeshi." says Mirai. Hanto nods, shutting his eyes and inhaling on his cigarette deeply. "That's right. He can lead a squad well enough. Pretty lacking when it comes to other stuff, though." Mirai turns, and sticks her tongue out coyly. "MY Squad is completely prepared for the exams. Himawari, Kayo, and Shinji are all exceptional shinobi. Why, I'd say that Shinji is just as capable of a tactician as Takeshi is, and much more proficient in Ninjutsu to boot."

Hanto nods. "You're probably right, but Takeshi also has an inordinate amount of guts. A disregard for danger that's generally only present in the fiery hothead types, who can't think past what they're having for lunch. I think that guts are more important than skill."

Mirai chuckles, as they approach the Hokage Monument. High above, Naruto Uzumaki looks down on them. She'd look over and smile. "You would think that, wouldn't you? Your whole family is nothing BUT guts."

He chuckles. "That's right. Speaking of which..I've been thinking of personally training Kichiro."

She looks over, surprised. "Oh? You mean that thuggish kid on your squad? He didn't seem like anything special, to me."

Hanto stretches. "We'll see. This is why I want a little more time with them."

"What about the other one? The strange little girl?" she inquires.

"Ai? She's a lost cause, as far as I'm concerned. Beyond the basics her training is completely beyond me. After a certain point, /you know who/ is going to want to train her personally. I don't see why he takes such an interest in that girl."

Mirai smiles weakly. "You know why. She reminds him of a certain student that /you know who/ used to have, too."

Hanto and her scale the building until they reach the roof, and they enter. It's only a few moments until they're knocking on the office door of the Hokage. The door swings open, and Naruto is seated at his desk. All around him are the Jounin for this year's Genin Squads.

Sararu Hikawa. Hanto's and Yasu's father. Yasu's Squad leader.

Hinabi Hyuuga. Rokuro's Squad Leader, and Hinata Hyuuga's little sister.

Anko Mitarashi. Shikadai's Squad Leader. Hanto internally remarks on how she hasn't lost her figure.

Mirai Sarutobi. Asuma Sarutobi's daughter. Himawari's Squad Leader.

Konohamaru Sarutobi. Hiruzen Sarutobi's Grandson.

Then finally, Hanto Hikawa. Misfit son of Sararu, and Squad Leader of Squad 13.

Six Teams representing the new generation. Naruto looks up from his desk, and smiles. "Well, everyone. What do you all have to say for your squads?"

Before anyone else can say anything, Hanto's Father, Sarasu, steps forward. He's a tall man with bronzed skin and black hair, with a spiky ponytail. Various scars are present all along his forearms, neck, and face. His skin looks rough and leathery, and he moves with a particular grace and self control. He slams his fist into an open palm, and grins from ear to ear. "I recommend my squad! Yasu, Takkun, and Naota are more skilled than ever! I would contest that they could defeat any Leaf Genin Squad participating this year!"

The Hokage smiles, used to this man's energy. "Heh, that's a bold statement, Sarasu. I'm glad to hear it nonetheless. Anyone else?"

Konohamaru stomps forward, raising his fist. "I recommend my squad! They're a team of prodigies like the Leaf has never seen before, Boss!"

Naruto grumbles. "Yes, but, how is their work ethic?"

Konohamaru's jaw drops, and he takes another step forward, although much more meekly. "Y-you can't be serious!? You have to have seen what your son and his team are capable of!"

Naruto laughs boisterously, and waves him off. "I'm kidding, Konohamaru. Of course they can participate."

Mirai is the next to step forward. "My Squad is also prepared. Himawari, Shinji, and Kayo are an excellent team. Incredibly mature."

Naruto nods. "I'll trust your judgement, Mirai."

Hinabi Hyuga remains where she is, arms folded behind her back. She seems serious. "My Squad will also participate. In the months they've trained with me, they've shown remarkable adaptability and tactics. They're a resourceful, skilled group."

Anko crosses her arms, and seems to think for a few seconds. "Well, the new Ino-Shika-Cho is more promising than ever. But, I don't know if they're quite ready."

Sarasu holds out a hand. "Ah, c'mon Anko! With that Nara boy leading your squad, you should be fine! Wasn't his dad the one that passed the test all by himself, those years ago?"

Naruto grumbles. "Well, that's not exactly what happened, but..it's not important. If you're unsure Anko, maybe hold off for another six months, then?"

Hanto, this whole time, has remained quiet and subdued. He has his hands in his pockets, and his mind fades off into the distance as the others converse over whether or not Shikadai's team is prepared.

He thinks back to the moment when he first met his squad. When he learned of Kichiro, Ai, and Takeshi's ambitions. The lofty heights that each of them wanted to reach, all on their own. Slowly, but sure, Hanto raises his head and smiles. Anko suggests her team for the exams, and Naruto turns his head towards Hanto. "Hmm? What are you smiling for?"

Hanto chuckles. "Because, if my team doesn't pass, at least they'll learn from the experience, right?"

Naruto frowns. "Hanto, please. This is serious. You know what could happen to them if they're not prepared for the forest."

Sarasu smiles, tauntingly. "That's right, son. If your team isn't ready, they could get hurt. Maybe some more time is in order, so that they can prepare? They're not as naturally gifted as some of the others."

Hanto grins devilishly. "That's right, they're not as naturally gifted. Which is why they need this lesson."

Naruto rests on his elbows. "I'm listening. Make your point."

Hanto holds out his hands in a gesture. "Is there no better teacher than the threat of death? I reason that if they fail, they live, and they'll be more prepared for the experience next time. They'll train harder. They'll use that failure to further their ambitions."

He clenches his fist tightly, and it weakly glows with a blue flame. "And if they die, then they had no ambition at all! I recommend Squad 13 for the Chunin Exams!"

Konohamaru sighs. "Crazy son of a bitch.."

The room goes quiet for a few seconds, and Naruto sighs. He unfolds his arms and straightens himself up, apparently making a difficult decision. "Hanto, that's a pretty controversial way of looking at this. It makes it sound like you don't care about your students at all. But I know this isn't how you feel. I understand your line of thinking. The way you look at it, if you didn't give them the chance to challenge themselves, then that would be a sign of not caring, right?"

Hanto, shocked by the Hokage's empathy, nods slowly. "That's right."

Across the room, Sarasu has crossed his arms, and is looking down grimly. Reflecting on past events with his son, and how he could have handled things differently.

Hanto looks up. "So, you see why this is important."

Naruto chuckles. "I think I get the idea. Besides, I think they'll all be up for it. They'd be upset if you told them they couldn't participate."

Hanto smiles. "That's right. Thank you, Lord Hokage."

You stare at your opponent's eyes, locked in an intense battle. The mid-day sun lights up half of his face, the porch roof overhead blocking some of the light from your shogi board. Shikadai sits somewhat positioned in the shadows, while you're sitting opposite in the light.

Slowly but surely, you reach down and pick up a piece from the board.

Slamming it down in a different position, you declare your attack. "Check!"

Shikadai almost jumps forward, snatching a piece carefully. "I don't think so!" He slams it down. "Now you're in check!"

You planned for this, however. By manipulating his moves you've put yourself in an even more advantageous position. You pick up a piece and clack it back down. "I take your knight with my rook!"

Shikadai grins. "Fine! But my other knight moves here to block in your rook, and if you take this knight, then my pawn will take you!"

You chuckle. "Where are your guts, Shikadai? I'd never back down to you!"

You grab your Rook and take his knight, and he responds by taking your rook. Of course, you bring in your bishop, snatching away Shikadai's favorite piece. "Heh! Check!"

Shikadai picks up a pawn, and moves it forward two spaces to block the path of your Bishop. He bought himself another turn.

You look down in surprise at the board. "Huh??"

He points to his own bishop. "Moving my pawn out of the way put your King in it's path. You're trapped in by your own pieces, with no where to go. It's mate, friend!"

Temari steps outside, opening up the door. She's holding up a tray of glasses full of lemonade, balancing it without effort. She kneels down and offers each of you one, and you both happily partake and thank her. She laughs lightheartedly. "I can't believe the way you two play this game. Most matches don't last over an hour, you know. I don't think there are any adults in the Leaf, besides your father, who could beat you two."

You sip at the drink and grin sheepishly, slightly blushing. You'd never really had anyone to play Shoji against all that much, since your brother isn't very good at it.

Suddenly, next to you, there's a puff of white smoke. It's about as tall as a human, and not a moment later none other than Naruto Uzumaki, the Hokage of the Hidden Leaf steps forward. He smiles and gives everyone a small salute. "Afternoon, everyone! How are you all doing?"

Shikadai smiles. "I'm doing well, Lord Hokage. Yourself?"

Naruto gives him a thumbs up. "Busy as ever! I actually came here because I wanted to ask a favor of Takeshi."

Temari straightens up, folding up the tray she used to carry the glasses and frowning. "Taking advantage of this nice boy's manners, are you?"

Naruto shakes his head frantically, trying to explain himself. You and Shikadai both laugh, having never seen the Hokage act like this. Maybe he's a little afraid of Temari? "N-No! Not at all, Temari! It's really important!"

He turns to you, as you sip from your lemonade silently. It's pretty darn good.

"Takeshi, will you do this favor for me?"

You blink. "What is it, sir?"

He holds out a small envelope, and passes it to you. "It's a message I need you to deliver to my wife, Hinata. It's super urgent, and I'd owe you greatly if you'd do this for me!"

You smile. "Of course, Sir Hokage. It's an honor."

Naruto stands up straight, and salutes once more. "I knew I could count on you! Have a great day, everyone!"

He vanishes in a puff of smoke, and you stand up, prepared to set off to Naruto's home. You wave goodbye to Shikadai and Temari.

So I just thought of something considering how much Takeshi's intellect and planning ability gets recognized. Are we basically gonna make him into a ninja version of Joseph Joestar? Cause I would be totally okay with that. Chakra can do just about anything the Ripple can do anyways.

Plus it would be funny if Takeshi got to pull off a, 'The next thing you're going to say is ___.'

He clenches his fist and takes a step forward, but Himawari stops him at the chest and pushes him back. "Get out, jerk! He's here to deliver a message! Dad'll be mad if you mess with him!"

He stands up and dusts himself off, grumbling before heading upstairs. You hear a door slam a few seconds later.

Himawari turns, and she gently twiddles her thumbs together. "Sorry about that, he's a butthead."

You laugh. "Oh, I know. I've ran into him before."

"I could tell, by the way he looked at you when you came in. I don't know what you did to upset bro, but it must have been pretty funny if he gets that mad." She says.

Hinata enters the room, walking in carrying a few groceries and setting them on the counter. She looks over, and gives you a small wave. "Oh, Hello. Are you one of Himawari's friends from school? I'm Hinata, her mother."

You walk over, and shake her hand. "I'm actually a Genin that's gone on a mission with Himawari before. Lord Hokage asked me to deliver a message to you."

She blinks, holding up her hand slightly. "Oh, I'm sorry. I hope I didn't keep you waiting."

You shake your head and chuckle. "Not at all, ma'am. Here's that letter!"

You pass it off, and Hinata opens it up and grumbles. "He wanted fish for dinner tonight? Ugh, he should have told me earlier! I already got pork.."

I have a question about something I'm not sure we could pull off so I wanted to run it by you to see if we could actually do it.

I remember you said that the bells we brought with us could amplify our false sound move. could we attach one to our ear, cast false sound on whoever we're fighting and at first just have them hear the jingle from places we're not so we can get a few cheap blows in. Then once they figure out that trick start switching it up by sometime letting them hear the actual bell mix in with false sound to mess with them all while we slow but surely increase the volume of the bell until it's deafening. Mix it with false place and/or a smoke bomb and it could be quite effective in a one on one match.

Your opponent appears completely stoic. The larger boy stands up straight and forms several handseals, before kneeling back down. Slowly but surely, the armor on his body thickens until he's covered in a crust of stone. You watch in surprise as you try to comprehend what sort of technique he's using. The stone wraps around his jaw in a wring to protect him from blows, and from you can see, the only exposed area is his stomach. He crouches down onto all fours, planting his fists onto the ground and seeming ready to pounce.

Now he's really Armadillo like. "Like I said, it doesn't matter! You better give up!"

You flick through several handseals as well, and decide to start with a lighter attack. It's best to try and draw out an attack and see if this new form has any new tricks, instead of going in full blast. People may not credit you as the team tactician like Takeshi, but you do know how to do one thing properly. Constant offense.

"Phoenix Fireball Jutsu!"

You hold up a hand to your mouth, and spit a storm of dozens of small fireballs at once. They all race towards Mataro, and you take your free hand to slyly throw shuriken into the mix. The steel is hidden by the wall of fire, and you can hear it dully thud into the rock. You wonder if this will have any sort of effect at all.

Returning to a neutral stance, you try to glean the state of your opponent through the dust as it clears. In just a few moments, you can see that your enemy has completely vanished! The only thing remaining is a large hole in the ground.

You have a fairly good idea of where he's hiding. Faintly, the ground underneath your feet vibrates. You sprint forward, deciding once again that offense is the best strategy. You preform the standard handseals of Fireball Jutsu, and exhale a steady stream of heat into the hole that was left behind. The rumbling under your feet intensifies, and the Armadillo-like boy leaps out of the earth, a fountain of fire just behind him. He lands on the ground, unpleased to say the least. He starts to rush you down, sprinting on all fours and making good time.

However, a direct attack is exactly what you've been looking for. You form the handseals for Great Fireball Jutsu, and exhale a gigantic bullet of flame that speeds through the forest. Much to your shock, your opponent doesn't swerve out of the way. Instead, he opts to leap forward, and roll into a ball of stone!

He rolls along the ground directly through your flame at high speed, and charges you down even faster than before. Acting purely on instinct, you leap upwards. However, your opponent kicks at the ground and launches himself at an angle. He strikes you midair, and the rocky surface of his skin grinds at you and sends you flying, and crashing into the trees. You're in fairly intense pain from the direct hit, and you know one more of those will keep you down.

You blink, your vision slightly black around the edges. In a couple of moments you regain your senses, and leap down from the trees back in front of your opponent. You take one of the canteens on your belt and tilt it up, drawing in a few long gulps. The water hits your gullet as you screw back on the lid, and you preform handseals for your special jutsu.

Fire Style: Bath-house Oni. You call it that because of how it turns your sweat into steam. It's pretty cool, although if you use it once you become dehydrated, it'll cook your organs and your blood will boil. A painful death you'd like to avoid. Hopefully this water will be enough to carry you through this fight with this titan.

If a direct attack from your fire won't work, then you'll just have to outmatch him in close combat.

You concentrate, gathering your chakra and strength. You feel an immense heat start to rise up from your belly, the center of your power. You pool it all in your stomach and burn it like a furnace, the fire nature chakra swelling your system with power. It causes your skin to start to turn red, and the veins on your skin to bulge. Sweat pouring down your face soon turns into steam, and through it all, you look just a bit like a demon.

Sprinting forward with a dash, you throw a left hook down at the side of Masuro's head. He raises up an arm to block the strike, as you predicted. Your feint flies free, and you twist your body in the opposite direction to whip in a powerful front kick. The blow knocks the arm that was supporting him aside, and he falls face first. Before he can scramble to stand up again, you stomp down as hard as you can, utilizing all of your strength. His jaw impacts the dirt, leaving a small crater. If it wasn't for the helmet of earth, which is now shattered, he may not have survived.

You drop your jutsu, and nearly fall to the ground as you turn pale as a ghost. You feel sick, and your head is pounding in pain. The effects of being severely dehydrated. You probably pushed that for longer than you should have. You down the rest of the first canteen, as your opponent lays in front of you, half conscious.

He slowly stands up, and you get the feeling you're in danger as you try to wobble to your feet. However, his team-mate calls him away, and he digs into the earth and leaves you.

I would have had to create a ruckus if I wanted to survive a continued encounter, so I fled."

Sarada pushes up her glasses. "That's why they're dangerous. They care more about their ambitions and dreams than they do their own existence. Each one of them is willing to lay everything down on the line, for what? Takeshi, the only thing he desires is to win. That girl, Ai, the only thing she desires is to become an ANBU Black Ops Member."

Boruto nods. "Mhmm, Mhmm. That Kichiro, he wants to be rich, famous, and powerful like no one else. So, you're saying that their obsessions are what make them dangerous?"

Mitsuki looks down at the ground. "I guess it does make sense. It was strange. When they fought me, at first, they allowed their injured team mate to attack me directly. Even though Takeshi had seen how powerful I was, he allowed her to do this. He respected her pride as a warrior, even though he had none himself. Maybe he saw it as an opportunity to wear me down, so he could finish me himself?"

Sarada takes a cooked fish out of the fire, and bites into it. "That's what I'm saying. It's just too iffy. Every move he makes furthers his own goals, even when he's helping others."

Sarada frowns. "A potential sociopath, a thug, and a clan's last child. I don't think we should blink without paying attention to these guys. Their trick is fading into the background where no one will notice them, but we have to study."

Mitsuki smiles. "Well, I have a brand new report that we can look over right here..."

Okay, so, plan if we face Boruto.

Grin at him, walk on all swaggering, confident as fuck. When the match starts, Shunshin out of the way of his opening attack, then taunt him. He'll probably get a good hit on us early on, let him have it, then say, "You'll have to hit me harder than that if you want your daddy to notice you."

He comes at us crazing, we pull out the tiger skin. Before entering the tower, we'll have thread several lengrths of ninja wire around the outside, and looped it so it has a cinch. Tie the end of the cinch to some kunai, and you have a rapid-deploy bag for capturing folks. Snare the enraged Boruto in the bag, use the Kunai to attach it so it hangs from the ceiling, and just use the False Sound jutsu to plague him with psychologically damaging remarks until he just curls up in a sad little ball in the dark and sobs for the next forever.
