You lazily bring yourself awake. You can still feel Robin’s presence somewhere in the room. Your eyes validate your other senses when you see her leaned over the hotel room’s desk, notes splayed out.

She was incredibly aggressive last night. So much so that you almost feel violated.

Almost.

You stretched and sneak up behind her. Your arms wrap around her small waist.

“Eeep!” She nearly jumps out of the chair. She pulls together all her notes and tries to hide the fact that she’s obscuring your view of them. You saw they had to do with mega-evolution.

“Y-you scared me.” She pulls her hair behind her ear. “Registration starts today. People are already coming in.”

You look out the window. It’s mostly vendors and fans, but you spot a few people that can only be trainers, too. They’ll probably cover the streets tomorrow. It’s only a trickle now.

Robin's been aggressive lately. Trying to keep her notes a secret isn't like her either.

You walk back over to her, keeping your arms behind your back and taking your time. Nice and casual. “So, watcha studying?”

“What? This? N-nothing,” she gives an awkward laugh. “Well, not nothing, obviously, but nothing interesting. Not to you anyway.”

You raise an eyebrow.

“I-I-I didn’t mean it like that. it came out wrong! I mean it’s just stuff you wouldn’t find interesting! N-not that you wouldn’t understand!” She rummages over her notes, blocking most your view. Finally she pulls out the one she was looking for. A Study on Pokeball Environmental Shielding. Just below it you saw a paper on regular evolution. All the ones you saw on her desk before besides these two were on mega-evolution, but you did see these too.

You look at the words, and none of them make any sense. It’s notes and formula’s and even her own scribbles on the side. You guess she wasn’t wrong. Still, why is she avoiding giving you a straight answer? Why try to hide the mega-evolution notes?

You scratch under your nose. “If you ever want, I can teach you everything I know about mega-evolution. Although to be honest it’s more about everything I feel. It’s hard to explain.”

“Y-you saw.” She sighs. “Thanks for the offer, but I’ll probably only have one shot at testing it.”

“You’re feeling alright lately, right?” You try to keep your tone as concerned as possible, and avoid any accusatory wording. “It feels like you’ve been different lately.”

She looks away. “I am. I’m stronger now.”

You didn’t expect that, coming from her. She continues. “All my life I’ve been meek and s-shy. I see my mom and dad getting ahead by taking what they want. I always thought they were selfish. But I was the selfish one. I’ve depended on you and everyone else to be aggressive for me. If it weren’t for you, I’d have evolved Eevee into a Flareon and probably begged my mom to train me to get her approval.”

“That’s not-”

“It’s true, isn’t it? I-I-I mean it works. Take your Garchomp for example. Oberon won’t dream of hurting you again because he’s afraid. Pokemon battles are the same way. You win by beating the other party into submission. And last night too! You like it better when I’m aggressive.”

She fights to keep the blush off her face. She didn’t think about what she was saying until now, and she still somehow gets embarrassed about sex. She fights off her embarrassment with sheer will power and goes back to her previous expression.

You hate to admit it, but it reminds you a lot of her mom, the way she’s getting philosophical.

She says nothing, but looks at the floor. You lift her chin with your finger.

“Look. I don’t want to lecture you. If you want to be more assertive, that’s fine. I’m just worried that maybe things might be getting carried away. I fell in love with you, not some other person you think you need to be. Just don’t...don’t turn into your mom, okay?”

She looks you in the eyes. You see anger, then fear. “You’re right. I’m sorry.”

You chuckle. “Don’t apologize. Or do, I don’t know.”

She laughs. “Sorry. It’s confusing, I know. I just...I just don’t know if I stand a chance, being just myself.”

“You worry too much,” you tell her, putting a hand on her shoulder. “You’re the smartest person I know. You can do whatever you want if you set your mind to it. But that’s you, not your mother’s daughter or anyone else.”

You both spend some time cuddling and saying nothing in particular. She hasn’t said much, but you can tell she’s feeling foolish about her attitude lately. Nerves and insecurity and everything else can put a person off course. It’s loved ones that set you right again.

“I can’t say what I was studying. It’s not that I don’t trust you or anything, but it’s my trump card against my mom, and you too. I don’t even know if it will work, but if my theory is right, it will even the odds.”

You have a full day ahead. You decided to register first before the lines get big. That way you won’t waste any more time that needed. After that, assuming you don’t get too many distractions, you’ll study.

Robin takes your hand and leads the way. She gets shy out in public. Instead of fighting it, she just holds it only a little, but not too much.

You get to the registration desk. There are trainers milling about, but only one person ahead of you.

Oh. You know that guy. It’s Hunter. He’s the Rapidash riding cowboy wannabe that you went a little crazy on before when he pushed his Pokemon too hard.

He finishes registering and turns around. His face turns to shock when he sees you. “Hey! What the hell are you doing here?” He turns back to the registration desk. “This girl is crazy! She attacked me! You can’t let her in.”

The nurse looks up. “When? Here at the league?”

“No! Months and months back. She can’t be allowed to register!”

“Sorry kid. Whatever your history is, we don’t disqualify people unless they’ve done something at the league.”

He backs down, but practically growls at you. “What? You going to stare all day?”

You walk passed him.

“What? Nothing?” He sneers.

You ignore him and present your badges to the desk. “So, do I get to keep them after?”

The nurse nods. “Sure do! Each badge has a unique ID, so you can’t use these to register twice. Next year, if you enter again, you’ll need to beat the gyms again.”

“Only if we lose,” Robin says as she presents her badges confidently if awkwardly.

The nurse smiles. She doesn't really think you two are going to win, but it’s a friendly, humouring look in her eyes. “Of course.”

You hear Hunter stomping off behind you, muttering something.

“There you go, nine badges each.”

You and Robin exchange a look. “Nine?”

The nurse starts listing off your badges. You follow along until she reaches the Enthusiasm badge. That’s the one you got from the unofficial Normal type gym. That must mean it’s been officially recognized!

“We don’t have to register it if you don’t want to. You can save it for next year instead. Some trainers with more than eight badges register them despite only needing the eight, as a way of making a name for themselves.” A look comes across her face. “Wait! I know you! You’re from that show! Well, I guess you probably don’t need to get any more recognition! You’re a celebrity!”

Robin holds onto the badge she got from Clair and just registers with eight. She gets the other eight back after they’re processed. It’s probably your imagination, but they seem less shiny afterwards.

You put forward all nine. The nurse processes them happily. “Looks like you’re going to be noticed.”

Your picture and badges appear on the monitor overlooking the room. It gives a satisfying confirmation noise, then the display shifts your profile among many other registered trainers.

“Your first matchup will appear tomorrow at any of the registration offices, or at any Pokemon center.”

“Can you tell me anything about it?”

She laughs. “Everyone always asks. I’m afraid not. I can say that you and everyone else will probably be matched with a partner in a doubles battle if the registration numbers keep up.”

You thank her and start heading out.

You were planning on going to the hotel, but Robin points out a library. It’s massive and majestic. Like an old villa. Rows of books line the walls, and the walls themselves have tall, rolling ladders attached.

“I’m going to keep studying what I was studying,” she whispers. “Meet back here, then get supper when we’re done?”

You nod. That sounds like a good plan.

I'm certain all her Pokémon have the ability to mega evolve. Though see if there's any records for past champs as well. Might be cool to check those out, maybe for fun or backup strategy.

The main thing you decide to focus on is the terrain in the arena. Like you learned earlier, the stadium is able to be used many times in a day by having a set of pre-loaded battle arenas underground. At the start of each match, the stadium simply removes the used arena and moves the new one up. This allows for a quick change between matches.

There are three main types of arena layouts. Dusty, balanced, and water focused. You’ll know in advance what type of map you’re using, but not the exact layout.

Now, here’s some interesting stuff. Technically, a used arena can be used again if both sides agree to it. You just assumed it was automatic. From yours studying, that looks like an obscure rule.

What else? Ah, here we go. The arena is built using a random generator. Each one is loaded on extremely durable plates. The ground is deep enough that even a Steelix and use Dig easily and not hit the bottom, but you could dig down deep enough if you wanted to. What’s more, the plates have grooves to prevent damage from repeated Earthquakes and other moves. A smaller Pokemon could dig down there and hide. It’d be difficult, but might work if you’re stalling.

You move on to music theory. There’s some stuff on soundwaves, notes, etc. What you really focus on is how certain notes or chords seem to translate universally between people and Pokemon.

Combined with your leadership studies, you learn a bit more about how to lead more effectively. Tone, posture, pitch, and more.

With some work and practice, you might be able to develop a system to issue orders with your flute. You don’t have time to do anything complicated, but you can give each Pokemon at least one “hidden” instruction with it. Might be handy in a pinch.

She nods and you both pull up the listings on the PC. You see emails from Vance, Jeanine, and Clair. Looks like they've met up and will be in town early in the morning. They ran into some sort of delay.

First is Robin’s. She’ll be in a matchup with Eddie against two trainers you don’t recognize. Hey! Eddie made it! That’s amazing!

Next is yourself. You’re paired with a bearded man against two people you don’t recognize.

Your match is first thing in the morning. Robin’s is later tomorrow evening. There isn't much time left in the day.

Your heart is pounding. Even though you've been working towards this forever, now it feels so quick.

You figure it’s best to look up your opponents and allies. You pull up their profiles first.

Your teammate is a man named Alvin. Looks like this is his third attempt at the league. In his first try, he lost his second match. His last try, he lost on his third match. Looks like both were close losses. Looks like he always opened with Aerodactyl. He also has a Vaporeon, and Gogoat. You can even pull up his last match in the league on video. He seems pretty decent, but doesn’t really plan well.

One opponent is a girl name Thelma. She has 10 badges. She doesn't have much public information, but you did find her listed as an electrical engineer. You feel safe in assuming she’s heavy into electric type Pokemon.

The other opponent is a kid named Took. It’s an odd name, and he looks weird. He has eight badges listed. Wait! You recognize him! Clair told you about him one night. You can’t remember all the details, but she said she was thrown off that all of his Pokemon used switching moves like U-Turn and Volt Switch. You know he has a Unfezant and Jumpluff. Clair insists she went easy on him because he was a kid, and he just surprised her.

You spend the rest of the fleeting day with Oberon, learning his moves and quirks. He lives up to his name. He likes to make his presence known, but not out of pride like Levi. He’s more of a utilitarian. He likes to psych his opponents out and put them off their game to win. He’s clever too. You see a lot of wheels turning behind his eyes. He has a clear understanding of social cues and relationships.

I have no idea. Just chat with Robin? Maybe have an actual *gasp!* DATE! I forget when was the last time we had one with her. It has been to long. We have had a long trying several months. Actually, if you're quick, you could have a Pokemon be knocked out in a match, then rush to the PC to swap one and toss the ball into the arena before the timer runs out. You'd have to be really quick though. Any delay could be a disaster. No sane trainer would risk it unless they really, really needed a specific Pokemon.]
