You are not Richter von Tracht.

You are Lukas Weizenkranz, an officer in the commission of the army of the Grossreich, in command of the 1st Company of the newly organized 71st Panzer Battalion of the 5th Light Division.

You had been rigid and uptight when you had begun your basic training almost nineteen years ago. You were exempt from military service due to working at an ammunition manufacturing plant, but the overtures of the recruitment programs had seduced you. You saw no reason to cease acting in accordance with ceremony even in the most dire of times. You were less inclined to these high standards now, in the wake of what you have lived through.

Once, in a time long past, you rode alongside the current Kaiser in the last days of the War of Emrean Liberation, forging legendary victories even as the treaties conceding defeat were being drafted. If you were to dare, you could have even called the Kaiser your friend at some point. You recall fondly of the time the young Prince called you by your first name, as your regiment wandered the countryside, lost in the newly declared peace. Many friends had been made and lost; the only one that you know survived the war unscathed was Pieter, whose less formal nature had at first been grating in your presence but had rapidly turned comforting in the last days of that wretched war.

You are either 38 or 39 years old; you cannot remember exactly when your birthday was. It was sometime this month, in September. That knowledge was lost, like many other things, on that day.
>>
Once, you had a beautiful wife, and a child. You promised to come home to them, when you left for the front one year before the war ended. You spoke fondly of them with all who would listen in the regiment. Your wife was admittedly plain in appearance, but had a kind nature and was talented in household tasks.

She had been shy when you first approached her, so long ago, but your marriage had been the happiest, if brief, years of your life. Your child was sickly, but your pay was sufficient to obtain proper treatment. Even in the despair of the deteriorating war, you were full of hope.

You returned to a charred ruin.

An investigation revealed that your wife had been ambushed one night, when your child had gone into a particularly bad state. It was late, and dark, and she was forced to make a direct visit to the doctor with your son. She was attacked, then raped, murdered, and stripped of everything valuable. Your son, who was reached too late to be treated, succumbed to his ailment that same night.

This had happened a month before you returned, while you and your regiment were fighting furiously to escape encirclement. You had been seriously wounded, but continued to fight, determined to see your family again. Through the lightning and thunder, you shambled into the darkness, following a distant cry to continue the charge; most of the regiment’s tanks had been disabled, and the desperate breakout was fought with shovel and knife as much as it was with rifle and cannon. You felt like you were about to die several times, but each time, you had a vision of your wife and son waiting at the station, and each time, you would pick yourself back up and continue forward. Your regiment finally broke out the same night she was killed.

Riots later caused fires throughout the city you were from. There was nobody to save your previous memories from the destruction. You had lost everything.
>>
The Kaiser had offered for you to come with him and become part of his retinue after the ceasefire was declared, but you had replied that you planned to live with your family. You made no attempt to contact him after finding out the news.

For a month, you mourned. Many days you did nothing but sit in a place that held one dear memory or another, and remain there until sunset, not even thinking. You dug through the ashes of your home fruitlessly, only finding charred wood and twisted iron. The watch your wife had bought you as an anniversary gift had been lost in the war, a fact that you cursed endlessly.

One day, you were lingering in the square where you had accidentally knocked over your wife to be, your second meeting. A man approached you, and passed you a silver locket with robin egg blue enameling; the locket you had given to your wife on your third anniversary, just before leaving for the war.

With trembling hands you opened it as soon as you recognized it, finding a tiny photograph inside, of your wife and child and you.

The man introduced himself as a private detective. He offered you a chance at revenge; the location of the gang whom he had tracked down after interrogating the fencer of the locket.

There was finally a reason to continue existing.
You thanked the man hurriedly and left. You didn’t notice until later that you had accidentally left the locket back at the park. You made the difficult decision to come back for it later; after this, you wouldn’t particularly need any worldly possessions.

The gang apparently wasn’t very large or influential. They were filth, scrubbed off the boot of the city and congealing in an old, condemned wreck that was once a tailor’s shop. You looked it over before going back to the hotel you were staying at. A few punks were usually loitering near the entrance, glaring at anybody who came too close. It was in a neighborhood with relatively few remaining people on a road less traveled, so they usually threw pebbles at the walls in the alleys adjacent to their palace of worn brick and stucco.

Some were quite young. You would not kill them; they were blameless, you decided.

As you made your preparations you thought about the weapon you would use. You had brought back both a weapon that you had taken as a trophy, and a pistol given to you personally by the Prince. The former was a rough, Emrean revolver, the other an ornamented and polished automatic with ornate engravings in its maple grips. It was a perfectly functional weapon, and definitely a better one than the revolver, but you thought to yourself whether it was appropriate to use it for this purpose.

Revolver.
>>
You pulled on a brown wool jacket and a flat cap and left for your nemeses’ lair, revolver tucked into its large pocket. You weren’t going to run into anything that would need more than six shots.

You don’t make any attempt to disguise what you’re there for. The boy on watch begins to scramble to his feet, hand in his rear pocket, but your gun is out faster than whatever scrap he has. He couldn’t have been older than ten; a tramp to be sure, but innocent.

“Piss off,” you growl, “or else.”

That was plenty motivation for the scrawny youth to scamper past you and down the road.

You kicked the door in, half destroying the rotten wooden fixture in the process. A pair of filthy looking men in overalls snap up from their card game, eyes wide as the barrel of your gun trains on them.

“Hey, woah, wait!” one of them cries.

>>
You hesitate, and shake the gun to indicate that he should speak. He glances side to side, sputtering syllables, when the other man hurriedly yanks a pocket piece out.

Rather, he would have, but you adjusted your aim as soon as he began the motion.

You pull the trigger twice, and the man on the left falls backward, taking his chair with him with a loud clatter. The other man paws around himself for a weapon but you plug him before he can draw anything. He looks down dumbly at the hole that appeared in the center of his chest before he slumped forward.

A series of confused shouts echo down from above. Another boy, this one a little older than the one at the door, looks around the stairs, notices you with a glance, then pulls a derringer from his waist.

>shoot him
>suppress and close for melee- nonlethal

Rolled 17 (1d100)

He has no chance against you. You line up his head in the sights and fell him with a single shot. You take a glance around the wall, and see nobody else coming. You take this opportunity to break open your gun and replace the spent rounds.

You look back and see that nobody has come for you still. You make your way up the stairs and turn the corner, and encounter a wiry, shabbily dressed man with a double barreled hunting shotgun.
>>
You stagger back as your left side is shot full of pellets, both barrels erupting at once. A birdshot shell. The man stares in disbelief as you stand up straight and point your gun at him.

He lets his own weapon fall to the ground,
rounds spent.

“Who are you!?” he shouts,”what’s the big deal!? What have we done!?”

>tell him before you kill him

>no point in telling a dead man
>>
>>43524880
>tell him
>>
You hardly feel the holes that were shot in you. Annoyingly, your arm feels weak; you let it fall to your side, holding the gun with only one hand. Your old wounds healed, you had thought, but the places where you had taken them are starting to feel like pins and needles.

“A month ago,” you stammer at first, but your voice strengthens quickly. “my wife went to get medicine for my child. I’m sure you remember, don’t you? You sold our anniversary gift as a petty trinket.”

“Hey, I-“

“My child died because you killed my wife. For what?”

The man’s teeth are chattering. “Hey, man, I know people. We could just get you another babe, is that-“

Six shots to the gut hadn’t quite killed him, so you finished the job with your boot.

Your strength left you as you made your way back home. You felt as empty when you fell as you did when you had finished your revenge.

You woke up in handcuffs, with the warden watching you.

You hadn’t died, apparently. Either that or God had a strange sense of humor.

“You have an important visitor.” The warden said simply as soon as your eyes opened.

“You fool!” the Prince shouted, beating a fist against the table between you, “why did you not tell me? Were we not comrades? Were we not friends? Why did you decide that you were so ready to end it all that you sought revenge, fully ready to die in the attempt? Are you a madman or are you an idiot?”

>This was my responsibility alone
Good evening. A bit different than expected but lets see what happens
>>
“This was my responsibility alone.” You say simple, “I had nothing to lose. Nothing to gain. Only a last part of my life to bring to a close.”
Prince Adam glares at you and puts his hands together.

“Unbelievable. You care so little about your life that even your friends no longer matter?”

You have nothing to say.

“That will not do. I will not allow a man such as you to become an empty shell. You are not the Lukas that I knew.”

He rises from his seat and his guards move to flank him.

“You committed a crime, Lukas Weisenkranz,” he states, “the law of the Reich states that criminals will be punished. You will appear before a court in two weeks’ time. There, your sentence will be decided.”

He turns to leave, his brilliant white cloak billowing slightly. “When we meet again, you will be the man whom I befriended and fought alongside once more. Farewell.”

A week later, you were summoned once more.

“Get up, Weizenkranz,” the warden bangs on your cell, “you’ve got a day out today. Or were you planning on missing your wife and kid’s funeral?”

You stayed in prison for another twelve years. You were told later that, once he was crowned Kaiser, Adam Paulus wished to release you, but his chief advisor, and ideological model, Schinkelmann, advised against it, noting that a Kaiser should not act solely on his own desires.

That was fine, you had decided when you were released. You had not particularly wanted to be released, after returning from the funeral.

As soon as you were released, the Kaiser summoned you. It had been seven years since his coronation, and with no other place to go, you returned to his service.

>>43525685
We're almost done with plot. Blitzkrieg soon.
>>
After some retraining and refreshing, you were called to service immediately, in command of a tank platoon. After the loss of Emre, there were no northern ports. A loss of power that had to be amended immediately. The Kaiser decided that the scattered northern states would offer little resistance, so after making an offer to join the Reich, which was naturally refused by most of the small petty kings, the Reich marched out to conquer them. The conglomerate of lands stood no chance, and in the forge of that war new tactics and knowledge were formed and tested.

There was one point, however, when it seemed that victory was not at hand. Towards the end of the conflict, the enemy raised several divisions from seemingly nowhere, which turned out to be volunteers from Emre, armed with Emrean equipment with their serial numbers and colors hastily removed or concealed. The thrust of an armor regiment threatened to destroy the tip of the Kaiser’s spear into the heartlands of the northern tundra.

However, Pieter’s company managed to ambush the forward elements of the regiment, and then hold the line against the onslaught. For several hours, he held the ground until you and your company came to relieve them. When you rolled up beside their line, all but three of the Pieter’s tanks had been destroyed or disabled, but before them lay a wasteland of Emrean tanks. The counterattack that followed crushed the Emrean intervention force, bringing the war to a rapid close. Pieter was given the Blade of the Reich for his heroic defense, in which he alone destroyed forty three tanks, transferring his command to other tanks twice after his own vehicle was destroyed.
>>
Nothing would have pleased the Kaiser more than for him to appoint you and his other comrades as generals, but the idealism of Schinkelmann lingered after the death of the architect, and to be frank, Pieter was an abysmal staff officer. He was a warrior, and belonged nowhere but the front lines, hence why despite all his accomplishments he was still a platoon leader. He had not made any attempt to advance his position.

You, on the other hand, were more competent at commanding more troops. Hence why you were in charge of a company. While officially, you were not to be treated specially, being so close to the Kaiser gave you certain priority when it came to procuring some things.

Such matters were what you were concerned with right now.

The 5th Light Division was part of the XV Corps, under the newly organized 14th Army. The 5th Division was designed as a successor to cavalry formations. Despite the nobility having little political power in the new Reich, many senior officers were still nobles, and with few with the education or skill to replace them, they had some pull in how the armies were organized. Light divisions were a compromise between cavalry and mechanization, letting the nobility pretend that the nimble tanks and armored cars were merely metal horses.

The 3rd and 5th armies were ahead of the 14th, smashing apart the Strosvald and Plisseau resistance. The 14th Army’s work was here, at the border of Delsau. Delsau had minimal fortification on her border with Strosvald; a powerful blow here could fold the nation in half without even touching the forts facing the Grossreich. With Delsau’s defeat, one of Naukland’s few routes through which it could intervene would be shut; Delsau had the most difficult terrain to fight in, so its defeat would be one of the first steps of the war.

As much as you would have liked for your unit to have been one of the few granted KT-30 tanks, there had been trouble with producing the initial run of KT-30s; only recently had the proper tools and equipment been distributed. Until then, an updated model of the KT-24 had been produced. The KT-24E was so different to its ancestry that its designation wasn’t particularly appropriate; it had been a contestant to become the new KT-30, but a competitor’s design was decided to be far superior.

It was strangely lucky, then, that the KT-24E’s designer had already had the tools and equipment ready while the KT-30 had such difficulties in being mass produced.

It wasn’t that the KT-24E was a bad tank. It rode rather pleasantly; it was just that rather than being a modern tank it both looked and acted like something made to adapt to new war, rather than redefining it.

Your company is to be the spearhead of the attack into Delsau. Along with the assets of the division, your political position allows you to request special assistance.

>get a platoon of KT-29B Heavy Tanks, an updated model that extracts the hull gun in order to make the tank more mobile. Its 105mm cannon is still just as powerful as before.

>get a platoon of Strosvald Pz m/32s. These are crewed by Grossreich crews; their original crews are being reeducated.

>get a platoon of StT-30s, heavily armored assault guns designed to break fortifications

This is also the place to ask general questions about briefing while I get the map ready.

The plan was a relatively simple one.

The Oberst of the 5th Light Division lays it all out during your briefing.

“This assault will be simple, on our end,” he lays out a few markers and pushes them along paths, “their fortifications here are light, and can easily be flanked or smashed aside. The true trouble are these two fortresses.”
He points out two elevated places, a pair of massive hills; nearly mountains. “301 is not nearly as dangerous as 198. 198 is a fortress, and ideally we would avoid it, but it must be taken. The road here is one of the few routes we can use to sustain this invasion. Thankfully, we will not be alone in this endeavor. On the eve of the invasion, paratroopers will drop into the fortress. All that is expected is for you to move quickly enough to relieve them. If all goes as planned, we will capture these obstacles with very little trouble. Are there any questions?”

You make your question.

“How exactly will we relieve the paratroopers? Will we be making a direct assault or surrounding it, cutting it off from reinforcements?”

“Both,” answers the Oberst, “2nd and 3rd company, after taking their first objective, this village, will make an assault upon the fort as soon as possible. 1st and 4th shall drive further in after taking their first objective, this other village, ensuring the road is clear up to that point. 1st and 4th will cut off the any reinforcement.”

“Understood."

“If you have concerns about attacking,” the Oberst continues, “fear not. Our might air force has been earmarked for this operation. With Strosvald and Plisseau fleeing before our armies, our full attention can be given to the most dangerous foe. Do not hesitate to call for assistance if needed. The Kaiser expects nothing less than absolute victory. Dismissed.”

My proposal. 6th platoon dismounts, leaving their horses with 7th platoon. They quietly advance to the river 90 minutes before the attack, cross, and attempt to flank the E5 position through the woods. 4th platoon moves into position to cover 6th platoon once the fighting begins, bridging equipment is deployed in a covered position on the river bank. 7th platoon, is ready to cross the river and remount 6th platoon as soon as the position is taken.

1st and 2nd platoon advance towards E4 marking targets, and clearing the way for the KT29Bs. 3rd platoon follows 1st and 2nd very closely in order to exploit a breakthrough.

5th platoon advances in the wake of platoon 1,2,3 and engages hardened positions in E3, with one vehicle being allocated to destroying any hardpoints found in 6th platoon's objective.

Glad you like. Here's my follow up!

Assuming we punch a hole through E4-D4:

First Platoon will roll up the rear of the enemy's line going northwards. 2nd will roll up the rear of the enemy's west line (The dumkopfs in 4th coy need all the help they can get). HQ and 3rd platoons will head full throttle towards Obj. 1, 5th platoon will roll up behind HQ and 3rd to begin reducing Obj. 1's defenses.

6th and 7th will remount and consolidate with 4th and head straight north in order to surround the objective and scout out the ground further down the road.
>>
>>43528321
1st platoon would be the ones helping 4th company not 2nd. My bad.
>>
>>43528321
I think I would rather take it a bit more slowly and commit more units to attacking the rear of the enemy's first line before moving forward. I would have 3rd join with 2nd in hooking around to the west, and 5th with 1st in hooking around to the north. HQ and 4th can move northwest along with 6th and 7th to scout the objective in force; if it seem vulnerable the infantry can move in and capture it, if not they'l set up a blocking position until the first lines are cleared and 2nd/3rd and 1st/5th can flank around the objective from their respective sides.

You gather your platoon leaders to brief them on the upcoming assault.

“Our objective is this small village, here.” You point it out, “I don’t know its name, so we’ll refer to it as Lukasdorf.”

“Von Einz,” Von Einz was the platoon leader of the 6th Platoon, an attached group of Lancers. “Your platoon will be undertaking a special operation. Are you up for it?”

“Your will is the Kaiser’s will, Herr Weisenkranz.” He saluted stiffly.

Technically incorrect but you take the enthusiasm as a good sign. “You will be crossing the river here, ninety minutes before the rest of the company. You will infiltrate to…here, and from there you will be able to attack the enemy before they expect it. Make sure you stay a healthy distance back, because as soon as the invasion is officially started, the Bomber Corps are going to bomb the hell out of everything they can spot, and that’s before the heavy artillery battalions let loose with everything they couldn’t use against Strosvald. As soon as hell breaks loose, 4th platoon will move in with their LT-24s to assist you.”

“From there the rest of the company will cross, and punch straight through here, in and through these woods. Convention says to keep panzers to open ground, but these Delsau mountain apes will be expecting convention, so to hell with it. Kruger, your heavy platoon will annihilate the positions in this area. One we have done that, we’ll have established a solid foothold that anybody coming up behind us can make themselves comfortable in.”

“As soon as that’s done, I’ll inform you exactly what to do next. If for some reason contact is lost, the plan is to outflank these lines with 1st here and 2nd here, while everybody else heads straight for Lukasdorf. Our operation starts at 07:00 tomorrow, bright and early with the dawn. Dismissed!”

The company was awake and ready at 5:00 in the morning. Every lamp was shaded in your camp; far away there was a massive congregation of lights; seemingly an ill disciplined large group, but in reality a maneuver by the Information Warfare Brigade; the massive collection of headlights, lamps, and campfires had no owners. The enormous, unpopulated sets of equipment were referred to by the IWB as the Ghost Division.

Morale was high. In preparation for the attack, the troops had been getting the largest servings of food they had gotten in years, courtesy of Strosvald stores. 6th Platoon embarked on its mission while the other platoons idled. A batch of rickety wooden rowboats had been appropriated for their task. When it was time for the rest of the company to move into position, a bird whistle signal announced 6th Platoon’s readiness; miraculously, undetected.

Their scouts reported some things. The fortifications to the north that were to be attacked, apparently, contained at least one of the more deadly variants of the self-propelled guns that Delsau had, along with roughly a platoon of infantry. You respected the armored vehicles, but not the infantry. While most of the population received compulsory military training, Delsau’s military was still largely conscripted, and their training programs were not as rigorous as the Reich’s professional army. As far as you were concerned, the infantrymen were for all practical purposes fresh meat.

The triple engine G-328 bombers emptied their payloads over the enemy lines; a cacophony of small explosions signaled the start of the morning’s battle. The G-328s were promptly followed by G-131s and G-122s, single engine attack planes pursuing more exact targets.

The bridgelayers let down their heavy cargoes with a crash, engineers quickly working to finish unfolding the metal frames and plank rolls. Their work was done by the time the second wave of single engine planes came, accompanying more G-328s. These triple engine planes, however, would be carrying a different sort of cargo.

Time was of the essence, now. You gave the order to begin the operation.

I could have sworn I intended to put a picture in there.

They're these things. 75mm medium velocity cannon. Fixed front facing machine gun.

Send the signal for 6th to attack immediately. If more specific instructions can be sent. Get them to mark the SPGs with smoke to make it easier for the attack planes and our tank units to spot.

(although if we can capture a few, so be it.)

Rolled 33, 94 = 127 (2d100)

You give the command to 6th platoon to begin a reserved attack as well, and make use of the disruption caused by the air attack. The forest would help them close enough for the SPGs to not be quite as devastating; if they ran into serious trouble, 4th platoon would arrive in the nick of time.

As your headquarters advances, you hear the crack of large cannon and the ring of armor plate being penetrated. The sounds of battle continue, and you quickly hear a transmission from 2nd Platoon; four enemy light assault guns destroyed designation Spz-28, one of own tanks disabled with shot through drive wheel, one struck through hull, crew wounded and in need of replacements. Not an awful outcome for an unexpected encounter with armor.

You move closer to observe the work of the KT-29Bs. Although the concrete fortifications are bristling with antitank rifles and heavy machine guns, their fire bounces harmlessly away from the thick hulls of the heavy tanks. It only take a few shots with the howitzer cannons to convince the small forts’ occupants to run for the hills.

As you are observing the situation, a lone tank comes up from your left, looking as disheveled as a pile of metal can. It is a D2 tank, a Delsau model of tank designed to work with their defensive doctrine, thickly armored, with a gun strong enough to make it a fearsome opponent in a one on one battle. According to intelligence there weren’t many of them on the border.

Yet here is one, bearing down upon your HQ platoon. It seems to have only just noticed you.

It seems like it’s time for a demonstration.

The KT-24E’s 37mm cannon is hardly troublesome to a tank with such armor as the D2 has. A strike to the glacis plate or the turret mantlet would do quite little. The instruction concerning what to do if confronted with a D2, if one is equipped with lighter cannon, is to retreat and find an angle where a flanking attack is made.

However, you and your crew were hardened in wars before this one.

Your tank’s shot plunges into tank’s hull machine gun. Your second gores the turret through its fat coaxial machine gun. The machine stops suddenly, and remains still.

And that made fifteen kills.

Commendations to Spatz's aim could come later.

A message from 6th Platoon comes in in a panic. A massive wave of enemies; from the looks of it, militia and D2s, ununiformed but heavily armed, has attacked, preventing them from making decisive gains on the position.

>They’ll have to hold. Continue the plan as before and push forward

>Divert additional forces to assist 6th Platoon and 4th Platoon

Have rear echelon troops hold onto 6th and 7th platoons horses, with orders to bring them up when signalled. Have 7th platoon move in on foot supporting 4th to assist 6th.

Can we get any air support on the radio?

>Can we get any air support on the radio?

It is readily available, yes. Maybe not direct on demand, but CAS is being flown.
>>
>>43530558
Relay orders to CAS command, that we have heavy armour we need busted in E4. And interdiction done in surrounding areas. Re-order our infantry to mark enemy tanks with smoke.
>>
(What do you draw your tanks with?)
>>
“Hold on to what you have,” you relay to 6th Platoon, “I’m having 7th come over to assist you, but otherwise we’re sticking to the plan. I’ll have battalion get some birds over to you. Make sure you mark your targets nice and clear. Out.”

Your next call is to battalion command. You inform them of the target rich environment, the urgent need, and how much the Kaiser would surely appreciate them doing this. Little else is needed for the sort of enthusiasm rarely seen in radio communications to be birthed.

If you had played your cards right, this attack may have become an unexpected boon.

Encircling a group of militia and destroying their heavy support would likely prompt surrender.
Meanwhile, you would take the majority of the company straight to the objective. The counterattack had struck in a place that was not as vital as the place your tanks had just thundered across; the units behind you would quickly fill the gaps left by your offensive. A classic exploitation.

I’m going to take a brief break here. Brb in about half an hour or so.

Photoshop, but honestly the program itself doesn't matter much for this sort of thing.

You relay the specification of your plans to the company. After brief reorganization, each group sets off to where the plans demand.

1st and 2nd Platoons splits away to go around the backs of the defensive lines, while you take 3rd and 5th Platoon with you to the village denoted as your primary objective for the first phase.

Strangely, you meet no resistance. A few times you see small groups, but they always flee as soon as they see your large formation of armor. Where were Delsau’s reserves? They would surely have come about by now. It’s possible that you’ve advanced quickly enough that you’ve outpaced even their reserves, but…
You receive a transmission. Another counterattack, this time on the other side.
Somehow you’ve missed their reserves altogether.

>Go back and hit them in the rear
>Push on for the main objective

Ok leave 3 and 5 with orders to hold the village. We'll take our platoon and shut down this counter attack personally.

Can we signal 4,6,7 and give them orders to remount and rendezvous with 3 and 5, once our second line has moved into position?
>>
>>43532197
Yeah.

This keeps happening and I hate it, but I gotta cut this short. I just realized that I'm out of time for this, and I've got to get a move on on something I have to do.

Again, real sorry about that. At least this is an exciting point to start on next time.

hey. Can someone give me a quick summary of the tank quest?

Is this is like Metal max or Metal Saga?

I don't think we've actually taken the village yet, have we? I think it would be safer to take our entire force to flank the enemy counterattack.

I think we made it there. Remember that it's not the fort it's just kind of a waypoint on the way there.

Finals are gonna be next week so that's a no go.

But after that I'm pretty free so I'll probably be running more than once a week after that.
