SOUL CALIBUR QUEST

It has been six years since the Evil Seed was released upon the world. Most people continue to live their lives, praying that the Evil Sword and it’s corruption never reaches their home. Yet a few warriors, those that claim a powerful soul, go out and seek the sword, or it’s demonic wielder, the Azure Knight. These people do so for their own reasons, and only a small number of them live long enough to have their stories mean anything, but those that do live on in the annals of history, the fire in their soul ever burning.

You, are one of those few warriors.

> This quest is taking place in the Soul Calibur game series, beginning at just around the beginning of Soul Calibur II. The story up to this point has been the same as it has been in the games, but depending on your choices, you can radically change how the games end up.

> When decisions are being made, voting will go on for ten minutes, and whatever has the most votes will be used. If something fits, I’ll allow multiple options being used at once, but that won’t always be available.

> When fights occur, you’ll roll 1d100 along with suggestions for attacks. I will allow multiple options for this, and I’ll reward intelligent, creative solutions to problems, so try stuff out, and take risks.

> Who are you?

> The Knight. Your name is Edgar Emmerich. You were knighted at a young age after spending almost all of your life in the service of knights. Although you know how to wield an arming sword, you prefer to do your fighting with a lance, on horseback or on foot. You have been sent on a mission to find Sir Roman Hartwin, the closest thing you have to a father. What lies in your soul is integrity.

> The Pirate. Your name is Captain Alfie Howe, and you’re a pirate, no doubt about it. You captain a crew of thieving, murderous bastards aboard your ship, The Serendipitous Embrace. Or, you used to anyway. You’ve been captured, and are currently rotting away in a jail cell. You’ve also recently decided to set your sights upon the dread Captain Cervantes, and the loot he’s supposedly carrying, if he is more than just a myth, that is. You fight with a cutlass, along with whatever weapons you can find. What lies in your soul is freedom.

> The Thief. Your name is Cedric. You’ve been having a hard time of it lately, seeing as you’re old enough now that you’re not cute, and guilty rich old ladies won’t give you food. So, you’ve decided to do what any teenage orphan on the streets of Rouen would do, and turned to thievery. You are nimble, quick, and clever, enough so to get you out of multiple scrapes that would have killed any other man. Currently, you’re planning to rob a mansion, after seeing it’s owner, some blonde duelist, leave on some long errand. You fight with two daggers, apparently belonging to your late father, they are easily the most valuable thing you own. What lies in your soul is rebellion.

I'm gonna leave voting for this open a bit longer, since this seems to be a pretty close race.

By the way, it should be noted that how the characters are currently might not by how they will be for the entire quest. Keeping in the spirit of Soul Calibur, the characters can go through some pretty big changes over the course of the quest. .

The countryside was quiet, unnervingly so. As you rode through it there was a sense of unease that seemed ever prevalent. It had been that way since you’d left Wolfkrone. Despite the bright sun, and easy travelling, you always felt like something was about to jump out at you, attack you. The world no longer seemed safe. Sir Hartwin had gone to check upon a village, not far from Wolfkrone. One that was incredibly near to the capital city. If the Malfested had spread that far... you dreaded what would happen to your kingdom, and you dreaded what might have happened to Sir Hartwin.

Still, you rode onward, even if you clutched your lance a bit tighter. You heard a sigh from your squire, Adrian. He was a young boy who seemed to always be lazy, sighing and dragging his feet to do a task where you would have instantly jumped up to do and happily done the same. Still, it was hard to remember that you were only a few years younger than him, at his fifteen years old. When you were his age, the Evil Seed had been released upon the world, and all squires had been knighted as soon as was possible, including you. You hadn’t understood what it meant back then, too preoccupied with the joys of being knighted to understand the perils of the Evil Seed.

You pulled off to the side of the dirt path. The village was still half a days’ travel, and it was approaching night, it was as good a time as any to set camp. You called Adrian over to set up camp while you kept a vigilant eye. Even if the Malfested hadn’t reached the village, there were still bandits to deal with, they’d gotten more bold, seeing the Evil Seed as an opportunity for riches. You offered them no sympathy. Adrian, to his credit, set the camp quickly, it was one of the few things the boy excelled at.

You looked to Adrian as the boy sat down in the prepared camp almost immediately. You shook your head, “Get up, we need to practice,” you said, much to the boy’s chagrin.
“What? I’ve been walking for hours! Can’t I rest?”
You shake your head, “You need to practice if you ever want to become a knight. Everything else you’ve learned is pointless if you don’t know how to fight.”
He’s learned better than to argue with you, and stands up, getting his sword and taking a deep breath. His sword is an arming sword, nothing special. You’ve considered giving him a better one, but nothing’s ever come of it. As you muse over your squire’s weapons, you look to pick your own.

You pick up your sword, it’s not that special itself. Sure, it’s more than a squire’s sword, but aside from it’s wolf-shaped hilt, the sword is a regular arming sword. You consider your shield, and lance, but decide to keep things fair. You don’t want to hurt or best your squire, just teach him. You stand opposite the boy, getting into a prepared stance. Adrian does the same, although he’s holding his sword clumsily, and he’s positioning his feet as though he’s preparing to race, not to fight.

Adrian makes the first move, his impatience his own downfall. He charges at you, lashing out wildly with his sword.

As Adrian charges, you parry his attack easily and step to the side, staying defensive. This only serves to anger him more, and he charges at you again. You continue parrying and avoiding his attacks, getting the occasion hit in, until the boy is too tired to continue. From there, you’re able to easily disarm him, having been conserving as much energy you could during the battle. He lets out a frustrated sigh, and frowns, sitting down.

You kneel in front of him, “Your attacks were sloppy, uncoordinated. You rushed me, and then when that didn’t work out, you continued to do the same tactic. One of the most important parts of fighting is adapting to changing conditions. When an aggressive tactic won’t work, try a defensive one.” Your matter of fact tone breaks slightly as you give him an encouraging smile. “You’ve gotten better than when you first began. Keep practicing, you’ll get better.”

Although Adrian doesn’t say anything in return, you have a feeling he’ll take this lesson to heart. At this point, it’s getting pretty late, and you’re beginning to get tired.

You give Adrian a smile, “Go ahead and rest, I’ll take the first watch.” Your squire manages to thank you before he goes to sleep. You stay up, making sure all of your equipment is in proper order as you keep watch. You enjoy the tranquility for a while, although the slight paranoia continues to bother you. It’s useful for keeping you alert, but it’s not exactly pleasant. You hear plenty of sounds throughout the night, but none seem to be actually worth any alarm. The shift is peaceful, the gentle breeze reminding you of simpler times, before the Cursed Sword seemed to drive everyone mad. You decide to let the boy sleep a bit longer than normal before you wake him up and let him know it’s his shift. You drift off into sleep yourself after not long, and dream of blue knights, red headed girls, and Sir Hartwin.

You wake up in the morning, feeling refreshed. As you get up, you notice that it doesn’t seem like Adrian fell asleep during his shift either, which is an improvement. Still, you waste as little time as possible, gathering your things and packing up. You can’t waste time on an urgent mission like this. You let Adrian know it’s time to go, and the boy nods, quiet for once.

A feeling of dread washes over you as you begin to ride.

You frown, you try not to let the paranoia control your actions, but it would take a blind man not to realize how very wrong this was. You and Adrian increase your pace significantly for your travelling. You make short work of the remaining travel, reaching the village before sundown. As you approach, you slow. The town isn’t on fire or anything, which is a good thing, but it seems almost deserted. The homes seem empty, the streets are completely void of any sign of human life.

“We’ve seen the village, they’ve probably left, scared of the Malfested, no doubt. Can we leave now?” you hear Adrian call from behind you. The boy is scared, and, though you’re not proud to admit it, you share his sympathies. Suddenly, you hear a loud bell, coming from the church of the village.

You push open the doors to the church slowly, only to be met with the sudden smell of death. Adrian keels over, letting out a string of curses as you step forward. The floor of the church is littered with corpses, blood splattered across the walls. You give a silent prayer as you survey the destruction, when suddenly you hear a female voice,

“Ooh! A new one, this’ll be fun!”

You turn just in time to jump out of the way of a crazed looking woman, wielding some sort of ring blade. You quickly arm yourself, preparing for battle.

You keep your shield up, doing your best to block the woman’s attacks. As soon as you see an opening, you lunge forward with your lance, but she jumps out of the path of your attack, lashing out with her weapon and hitting you in the leg. Shocking pain flooded your body, but you kept moving.

The woman grinned, cartwheeling back a bit. “I was right, you are fun! No one else here put up a fight, they all just tried to run," she giggled. You were certain she was toying with you.

Lancers are usually mounted, though some infantry can get away being lancers on foot. What we generally know as a lance, and what our hero is probably using, is usually unwieldy on foot.

Although you’re slowed down now, you realize you’ve got a pretty decent grasp on her fighting style. Sure, you don’t know everything she’s going to do, but you know just what weaknesses to exploit. You feign the blow you took to the leg as more serious than it actually was, and when she cartwheels in for the kill, you slam the broadside of your lance into her head with all your might. She collapses to the floor, and as she tries to get back up, you bring your shield down on her outstretched leg. You can hear the sickening snap of bones breaking, and she lets out a loud cry.

She looks up at you, and speaks her voice different this time. “Dammit, I surrender, you win.”

You’re standing over the woman, her broken leg basically rendering her acrobatic fighting style impossible.

You put your lance through the ring blade and send it out of the woman’s reach. You consider ending her right there, but instead, you nod. “Answer my questions first though. Be nice about it, or I’ll be delivering you to Wolfkrone with more than one broken bone,” you say. The woman, to her credit, nods, not seeming all that violent currently. “What happened here? Why did these people die?” you ask, your voice stern. Death wasn’t new to you, but to see an entire town, a good knight, all slaughtered... it wasn’t exactly pleasant.

“They tried to hurt me. So I killed them all,” she states, matter of factly. Looking around at the entire village worth of brutally murdered people, it seemed unlikely, but it also seemed to be the best answer you could get out of a mad woman.

You frown, “Elaborate. Who tried to hurt you, and why?” She flinches at your harsh voice, but replies nonetheless, pointing out two of the corpses in particular. “Those two. They were following me since I entered the town, bothering me and bothering me. I don’t think they expected me to fight back when they got me alone. I showed them. The rest tried to stop me.” A frown crosses her face, where she seemed happy and thrilled about fighting before, now she just seemed bothered. You stand up, and bring her to her feet, binding her hands together.

“Don’t go anywhere. I’m going to look around the town. When I get back, I’ll help your leg.”

You leave her there, and Adrian runs up, seeming incredibly happy to see you. “I was worried! Um, the woman there, is she...?” you shake your head, and the boy seems almost relieved.
“We’re going to be taking her back to Wolfkrone. For now, keep an eye on her, she’s still in the church. Be careful with her, she’s very, very dangerous.” Adrian nods, and you go to look around the village. Most of the houses are lacking in really, anything interesting. No valuables, no clues to what happened, nothing. But, as you enter one of the houses, you hear a gentle sobbing.

You investigate, and find, crouched in a corner of a house, a small horde of at least ten children, ranging from infants to teenagers, barely younger than Adrian. They all seem terrified.

You kneel so you’re at level with the kids, and meet their gaze, trying to look as non threatening as possible. “Hello there. I’m a knight. Everything is going to be alright now, I’m going to take you someplace safe, alright? But, I need to know if any of you know what happened here.” As soon as you finish talking most of the children start talking or crying, all at once. The ones old enough to realize what happened seem mostly quiet, as well as the most helpful. From what you could gather, two of the town drunks were harassing the newcomer, who the kids identified as Tira. Tira then killed the two drunks, and didn’t stop there. The only people she didn’t kill were the children, who she gathered up into the room and left there.

Eventually you got all the information you could from the children, and somehow calmed them down to a manageable level. “Everything will be okay, I promise you that.” You say, before heading back to the church. As you walked back up the hill, you heard a terrifying sound, Tira’s laughter. You ran in, cursing yourself for leaving Adrian alone with a dangerous murderer, only to see the two of them both fine, having a conversation. You blinked, and Adrian looked at you, “Um, are we ready to go? I got the horses prepped while I was waiting outside the church.”

As described in a previous Soul Calibur thread regarding Tira's psyche:

>Her main thing is that she's caught between a horrible, crippling fear of being alone in the world and an incapacity to empathize with others, along with the whole sadism thing.
>Tira can't relate to human beings except when she's killing them because she was raised as a weapon by assassins and "graduated" by murdering the woman who raised her. She's tried to be a normal person, but she can't empathize with humans after the life she's lived and so she inevitably kills them.
>She views Soul Edge as a being like herself, unable to coexist with humans and compelled to kill. It's the only being Tira's ever been able to empathize with, and so she's developed a fanatical loyalty to it.
>Ironically, with the impact Tira's had on Pyrrha's life, Pyrrha might be the only human being Tira has any empathy for, which might explain a lot about why Tira wanted her to become the new incarnation of her master/lover.
Food for thought.

You nod, “Yes, let’s get out of here. There are ten children we need to bring back to Wolfkrone, I saw a cart in the village, we can use that to help us bring them back, but it’ll slow us down.” Adrian nods, stepping closer to you. You and Adrian splint Tira’s leg, and gather all the children together, and you’re all off, leaving behind the remnants of the village. Most of the children are quiet, the older ones taking care of the younger ones to the best of their ability, and Adrian keeps looking at Tira, but you find it hard to focus on any of that. At the moment, you just can’t wait to be home.

Both days’ travel are surprisingly uneventful. Tira was almost completely silent the entire trip, and apparently the bandits and robbers knew better than to attack anyone this close to the capital city. You arrive at Wolfkrone, with ten tired and hungry orphans, a captured murderer, and you think about how far off course this mission has gone. Still, you’re quickly ushered into the castle to meet the princess, the guards taking away Tira and the children, and Adrian waiting outside.

You had been friends with the princess for years, even before her father had gone mad and she’d ascended to the throne. She had knighted you personally, only a few days after she’d been made into the defacto leader of the kingdom, and you still look back on that memory fondly.

You sigh, having not realized how tired you were until you got here. “I’m alive and well, your highness, which is more than I could say for the village,” you fill Hilde in on everything that happened during your travels, and, although her expression grew more and more concerned, she didn’t speak until you finished, “I know these are strange and dangerous times, your highness, but when entire villages disappear off the map, I can’t help but be concerned.”

Hilde sighs and looks over the map scrawled over her desk. It used to be her fathers, but in the years since her ascension to the throne, she’s more than made it her own. To the point that if her father ever made a recovery, it would feel strange for you to see anyone else leading the kingdom. “I thank you for your loyal service, Edgar, it feels like loyalty is so difficult to come by these days... If what you say is true, that is... very troubling indeed. Another village we’ve lost to the malfested and mad. But... I must confess, I sent you out for more than just to find Sir Hartwin. I heard rumours that there was a shard of the dark sword in that village. I assume you haven’t seen anything like that?”

You think back on it, but can’t remember. You shake your head, and you can see genuine relief on Hilde’s face for a moment. “That is the best news I’ve heard in a long, long time. I’ll have people try to find homes for the orphans you brought. And we’ll have a trial for this woman’s crimes at a later date. You should rest, Sir.”

>>
>>43569304
Public trials were big entertainment in the old days. People would come from miles around to see the latest poor unfortunate bastard get judged. It's like the bloody world cup. Only the blood comes later.

Hilde is already established to be a good friend of the PC. What's wrong with shooting the shit?

>And don't pick any fights with Mitsurugi.
I'll agree to that one, though.

>>43569414
Kilik's a cool guy with a monk's patience and a good circle of friends around him. Mitsurugi will fight anyone and everyone becuase Mitsurugi don't give a FUCK.
>>
>>43569393
>implying we're not gonna friendzone the FUCK out of Hilde so that Siegfried can get all up in that
>>
I just realized if we had went with pirate we may have known Ivy.

We may have missed out on something good.
>>
>>43569497
>Implying we would've known Cervantes well enough to know Ivy by extension
Unless there's something I'm missing. If anything, if we went pirate, we would've been on good speaking terms with Maxi.
>>
>>43569497
Dude, Ivy is absurdly repressed, and won't stop being so until she figures out how to remove the taint from her system.
>>
>>43569526
>>43569534
If we went pirate we could be Captain right now.
>>
>>43569526
Not know him per se, but hunting him we would have possibly come across her.

>>43569534
Isn't she also basically a soulless puppet now too?
>>
>>43569554
Are you saying we could be heroes, if just for one day?
>>
>>43569581
Fuck that, we'd be getting shitfaced with Yoshimitsu.
>>
>>43569561
>Isn't she also basically a soulless puppet now too?
In Soul Calibur 3 (I think), Cervantes stole Ivy's soul. To save herself, she used the artificial soul she was saving for a homunculus to replace her missing soul. This has stopped her aging process, rendering her functionally age-immortal.

This hasn't happened yet, so Ivy's still a regular human. She's just a very reclusive English noblewoman who is deep into alchemy and swore a vow of chastity to prevent her blood curse from spreading.
>>
>>43569581
God dammit anon, now I'm picturing Ivy singing the female half of the love song medley from Moulin Rouge.
I don't think my heart can handle this much d'awwwww.
>>
>>43569623
I think she'd look better in the suit.

>Vow of chastity
That's adorable.

Seriously. Until she breaks her blood curse and severs her connection to Soul Edge and her biological father Cervantes, Ivy swore herself to celibacy to prevent the cursed bloodline from continuing.

You don’t leave Hilde’s chambers, in fact, you walk a bit closer to her. “How have you been? We haven’t had much of a chance to speak since... well, everything that’s happened. I worry about you sometimes, it must be difficult to rule an entire kingdom by yourself.” Hilde gives you a faint smile, brushing a lock of red hair from her cheek. “It has been difficult, and I appreciate your concern. I wish we could go back to when everything was so simple, but looking back to the past won’t help anything. I need to be strong, for my people. The entire kingdom is reliant on me, and I will not fail them.” Despite how completely tired and stressed she seems, in that moment her resolve is powerful enough you think she could take on the Azure Knight himself completely on her own.

You smile, “If anyone could lead us to victory, it would be you, your highness. I was thinking, I saw nothing of the sword, but perhaps the prisoner did? You know I want justice to be served properly, but we should interrogate her, see what she knows first. I did my best, but I am not an interrogator.” Hilde nods, “I’ll have people question her, see what they can find out.” As you step out to leave, Hilde calls out to you, “Edgar, thank you.” You nod, and return to your chambers, drifting off to a restless sleep.

> That’s the end of Part 1 of Soul Calibur Quest!

I had a lot of fun running that, if you have any suggestion, comments, questions, or anything, I’ll stick around for a bit, but I haven’t slept for quite a while, so I may pass out soon enough. I’ll be running around noon-3 PM EST tomorrow or the day after that. I’ll also look into getting a twitter and such.

I just meant the musical "D'aww" shit.

But nigga damn.

>Ivy swore herself to celibacy to prevent the cursed bloodline from continuing.
Couldn's she like just use some kind of protection?
>>
>>43569714
Yeah, I save that picture for occasions like this.

>>43569709
So, why are we so buddy buddy with Hilde, what's her opinion of us?
>>
>>43569765
>You had been friends with the princess for years, even before her father had gone mad and she’d ascended to the throne. She had knighted you personally, only a few days after she’d been made into the defacto leader of the kingdom, and you still look back on that memory fondly.
We appear to be one of her confidantes and are on a first-name basis with her.
>>
>>43569765
You've known her for a pretty long time. You were basically adopted at an early age by Sir Hartwin, who was the king's most trusted advisor, so the two of you were pretty close growing up. Ever since she became ruler and you got knighted, the two of you have interacted less and less, but she still thinks of you as an incredibly valuable friend.
>>
>>43569796
>>43569812
Oh, ok, cool so we basically have the ear of a Queen, we should exploit this in the future.
>>
>>43569709
My only critism was the fight seemed to go by rather quick for my taste.
>>
>>43569938
>Fighting a dodgy cunt with a strange weapon
>Give her a concussion and break her leg
>Fight over
>>
>>43569979
Hope you don't bitch if we get one-shotted by the powerhouse characters.
>>
>>43570003
In Tira's defense, this isn't SC3, so she's not made full named character status yet.
>>
>>43570024
And MC qualifies for that?

He's basically discount male Hilde.
