"...Say, Amata."

In the intimacy of this moment, and considering everything, you weight carefully your chances.

If you inform Amata of this, she would normally flip out. Probably get really, really mad.

But maybe, considering the moment... maybe, considering the atmosphere... Maybe, just maybe, this is the best time to talk to her about it without her overreacting.

You take a deep breath, cross your fingers, and start: "...There's something I need to tell you."

"What's the problem? You got Tia pregnant?" she jokes, but her giggles die out pretty fast when she realizes you're not laughing with her. "...Oh gods, did you really get her-"

"No- no, it's not that."

She relaxes. "Well, what is it then."

No good way to say this. "Well... Ririth's... uh, dad. He wrote me a letter."

She keeps staring at you, expressionless, but all color drains from her face.

"He said he can't make it to the wedding, but he gave me his best wishes."

"...Ririth's dad." She mumbles.

"Yes. You know. Ligier."

She smiles and nods calmly.

"Dear?"

"Yes?"

"Let's burn her and her entire room."

She isn't taking this well. She isn't taking this well AT ALL.

>It's a good idea.

>Who are we?
Maka, an exiled noble Exalted as a Zenith-caste Solar. Queen of Gem, now ruling the western island of Tianna. You have gathered a vast amount of allies and friends, and defeated every threat to Tianna up to now.
You recently discovered that Tianna is actually an artificial island, built around a First Age Titan: an almighty flying fortress. Your forces have crushed the Bodhisattva Anointed by Dark Water, a Deathlord who tried to usurp its power for himself.
Now you have built a solid power base, and worked hard to draw the attention and earn the trust of the Unconquered Sun. What will your next step be?

>Solar? Zenith? I don't know Exalted...
This quest is as newbie-friendly as possible, and I want it to work as a newbie's intro to Exalted. If you have ANY question, ask in thread. For the setting, google "1d4chan exalted".

>Archive?

>System?
Dicepool-like system. When performing an action, everyone rolls 1d10 when posting. the first X rolls are considered, where X is equal to attribute + ability.

>XP?
Attributes cost [current score x5] xp. Abilities cost [current score x3] xp, except Zenith costing [(current score x3) -1]. Charms cost 10 xp, except for Zenith-based charms (related to charisma and physical/mental fortitude) which cost 8 xp. At the end of every "session" (thread) you will be presented with a list of possible acquisitions.

This isn't just on the level of "Hey did you hear about that tall sexy brown Solar?". This is how EF described the name on his ask:
>Conceptual is different, and it's something that you can do only in Old Realm. Basically, if you know someone or something well enouh, you write a single symbol that encompasses their entire being, in a manner akin to a "true name". Everyone reading it understand who it's referring to, even if they never met that person, and everyone writing it will write it in the same way (unless they write it wrong, of course, but there's a right and a wrong way to write it). Yes, it's a magical aspect of reality, probably hardcoded in the universe by the Exalted in the First Age.
>That's going to be translated in english as all caps.

You try and keep her pinned to the bed and prevent her from just running outside. "No! Wait! Wait! Look, nothing happened! He just said that he's not going to come! So..."

She struggles a bit against you, then gives you a death glare. "How does he know?"

You hesitate. "Uh..."

"How does he know so much about us? How can he even deliver a letter to Creation?"

"Through Ririth-"

"Exactly! I suspected as much, but I had no way to test it. But... Ririth is basically a huge walking portal to Malfeas. We can't let her cause damage to Creation!"

You sigh. "...She's not THAT huge."

She seems to be slowly calming down. "...Alright, maybe she isn't, but she's a point of connection to Malfeas, and that's bad. We sealed them in another dimension for a good damn reason, Maka."

You nod. "I know. It's just that, well... neither Ririth nor her father seem... you know, evil."

She sighs. "...Well, demons aren't evil, or to be more accurate, aren't willfully evil. They act according to their own... morals? Sort of. They're nothing like the morals of anything existing in Creation. A lot of what is perfectly natural for them is shockingly evil for us. So... they're not ABSOLUTE evil, but they're dangerous and nasty for Creation."

"You summon them all the time." You point out.

"But I don't like that. And I keep them bound and controlled. Ririth is... she's just a loose cannon."

"Isn't that a good reason to keep her under control? I mean, she might be a point of contact with Malfeas, but she's not a bad person. She's been very kind and helpful. We can't just... like, kill her."

She smiles without humour. "...You have no idea of how many horrible things I've had to do at good people in order to keep Creation safe." She says all of sudden, looking through you.

(cont.)
>>
"Are you calling me naive?" You reply.

"...No. Not really. Just... you're the one you should be. You're the Zenith. You're a paragon, an example, a leader, and a moral compass for everyone." She giggles. "Though your own sense of morals has some screws loose sometime." She breathes in deeply. "...Alright. I... I probably overreacted. I don't like this at all, but I'll trust your judgement. But if at some point in the future a third-circle demon rips her open and uses her to step into Creation, you'll be the one who has to deal with it."

"Well, with the fact that she's Ligier's daughter, I don't think any demon would do that." You point out.

"Except maybe Ligier." Amata mumbles, nestling next to you.

Those words hang ominously in the air.

"...Oh, and Ligier called me MAKA." You say, using your own name in Old Realm, tracing it with a finger in the blankets. "Is this..."

She groans. "...Conceptual Naming. Great. He's been keeping his eyes on you pretty well."

"What's that about?" You wonder. "That symbol looked familiar, even though I've never seen it before."

"It's a trick of Old Realm calligraphy. If you're really good, you can write someone's name in a way that everyone will recognize it." She explains. "If you showed this symbol to a scholar from the other side of Creation, who knows Old Realm but has never heard of you, he'd... well, he'd know you. The symbol contains sort of a simple description of yourself, that triggers automatically in the mind of whoever reads it." She explains. "In the First Age, Solars used this to make themselves known even to the masses of mortals who would otherwise have no chance to meet them in person. Also... some charms and magical effects connected to your person can be triggered by the Conceptual Name as well."

(cont.)
>>
You think about it for a second. "...But I already know myself. I mean, philosophical "does anyone really know himself" conundrums aside. Why would he use Conceptual Naming on a letter addressed to me?"

"To let you know that he's been watching you." Amata rolls her eyes. "I guess we'll have to keep that into account."

You groan, roll in the blankets a bit, and suddenly realize you've been in Amata's bed all this time.

You glance around. What about the desk? You're not even in her office anymore, this is her bedroom. Weren't you in her office when you started-

You meet Amata's smug gaze, who has apparently noticed your confusion and is enjoying every second of it.

I wonder if she'd want to, I mean I don't think she hates Tia, but Amata is marrying Maka, if she's going to have anyone's babies it would be ours.

The question is how do we get her pregnant.
>>
>>43606014
You don't have to ask that, it's quite obvious to you just by reading it and thinking about it. But it's not something you can put in words.

It gives whoever reads it an idea of what the person is like. Physically, but also a as far as their personality and character goes, and a bit of their history.

Think of a level of familiarity somewhere around "passing acquaintance". That's what is contained in the symbol.
>>
>>43606071
>double pregnant
That would be cute.

Unless you were talking about the sex, in which case, lewd.
>>
>>43606122
I know the characters know it, I was more concerned in having that info passed to us, the players. Sure, we can probably guess "Hottest woman ever with a shitload of compassion and really, really tough. Also, nobility and has enough tits for everyone." or something, but it's nice when the exact thing is passed to us.
>>
"...What if we wrote that name on our coins as well?"

She gives you an odd look.

"...Why? Don't tell me that you have a Charm that affects people even without you being there-"

She groans noticing your arrogant grin in reply and quietly facepalms. "You're terrifying."

"I know." You reply, flattered.

"...Well, it would be useful only with people who know Old Realm. Who are a very small minority nowadays. It was practical in the days of the Old Realm, but it isn't nowadays. The idea of using just your face on the coin is a lot better."

"Can't we use both?"

"The symbol would need to take a lot of place to be large enough to be readable, and if you wanted to put your face on one side and the symbol on the other you'd have to get rid of the symbol of the Unconquered Sun, and that would probably make Pyre Spark mad." She notes, half-joking.

"I see." You mumble. "Say, there was another thing I wanted to ask you..."

"Go ahead." She invites you.

"It's about your kids."

"Samiel and Irene?"

"The others."

She pauses for a moment.

"You have other children, but I only ever saw Samiel and Irene. I understand that they're adopted as part of your cover story, but I was wondering..."

"Well, no sense in keeping the charade up." She interrupts you. "There's just Samiel and Irene."

That takes you by surprise. "But... I thought-"

"Yeah, it's common knowledge that the Queen of Tianna has other children who failed to Exalt and are working in the city's army, administration, or so on. And yet, you never met them." She smiles. "No one did. It's just a rumor. They don't really exist. I adopted Samiel and Irene as part of my cover, but people would get suspicious about the cover if this Lost Egg queen, without any particularly impressive lineage, managed to have both her kids Exalt without having any unexalted children."

"...They don't exist?" You frown. "All this time I was..."

(cont.)
>>
"It was all lies, trickery, misdirection and propaganda." She grins. "Far easier than taking care of real kids, and dealing with all the overcomplication to my cover story that they would cause. Every extra person added to a cover is an additional point of failure, after all."

"I'm amazed."

"Thank you."

"That wasn't a compliment." You roll your eyes. "Are you really marrying me, or is that a lie as well?"

She kisses your cheek. "That's real."

"You could be lying right now, though."

"Absolutely." She grins.

You groan. "...Is the ceremony ready, in any case?"

"Almost." Amata points out. "Getting the last few things ready. You won't have to worry about a thing. I'm having a lot of fun planning it, actually. It's going to be full of surprises."

"It should be a happy day. Don't make me dread it." You joke.

"Where would I get my kicks from, then?"

"So, how's Valeriana's work coming along?"

"She's a bit stressed out." Amata mumbles as she idly combs her fingers through your hair. "Lots of things to do, and lots of things on her mind. What with all the damage and whatnot."

"...Yeah, I know. We're really asking a lot of her."

"She's the best civil engineer I've ever met. Heck, probably the best civil engineer in the West at this point. And she has a lot of grandiose projects, and now she might even have the means to accomplish them, but she has to put them aside and work on just repairing damage from the battle and earthquake." She continues. "I think that that's the reason she's working so hard and so fast, even though it's something that doesn't interest her. She wants to get all this busywork out of the way."

"So she can go back to work to what she likes?"

"Yes, I think so." Amata nods.

"...How did she take the news that I intend to make the Titan fly again someday? My promise to Flame?"

"...In stride." She replies. "She had already a lot of plans for Tianna that required the island to stay an island..."

"Yeah. I saw them. That's why I was asking, I'm worried she might be mad at me."

Amata scratches her head. "...Mmmmaybe she was a LITTLE BIT mad, but just a bit, and just for a day or so. I think she already has some ideas on Tianna and the Titan herself, but she's kind of hard to approach these days. She's working so hard, but she doesn't talk with anyone."

"...Should I go and see her?"

"I think the best thing we can do is let her work and leave her alone. She'll show up at the wedding and by then everything will be finished. I think she's deep into something and doesn't look like she'd appreciate being disturbed. You know, one of those creative trances."

"I think I know." You nod. "...I hope she'll be there for the wedding. I'd hate for her to miss it."

"I don't think she will. She was very clear on wanting to get everything done by then."

(cont.)
>>
You roll a bit in the blanket, pensive. You let your hands idly caress your stomach.

"Amata?"

"Yes?"

"Would you have my kids?"

The question seems to catch her by surprise for a moment, but just a moment, Then, her expression softens in perhaps one of the few times you've seen a genuine, honest, kind smile on her face.

"Yes." She replies. No doubts, no questions, not even the obvious one. So much so that for a moment you suspect she must have misunderstood what you just said.

No, she didn't, a second glance into her star-strewn eyes tells you. She knows exactly what you meant.

"...Thank you."

>>
"...What are you thinking about?" After a few minutes more, she asks, noticing your frowning gaze fixed to the ceiling.

"...mom and dad. And my little sister. I wonder if they're alright. Where they are."

"I heard from Aexel that you've assembled a team to head over to Gem and scout the place."

"Yes. They're due to head there just after the wedding. Should be there in three days." You reply. "I'm worried about what they'll find out."

"No sense worrying before you even know anything." She smiles, trying to cheer you up. "Worry once they report back."

"...What if they're dead, and I'll learn that, if only I acted faster, I could have saved them?"

"Why would they be dead now? Rankar either had them killed immediately after his coup, in which case there'd be nothing you could do, or kept them alive, in which case he wouldn't have a reason to have them killed later."

That line of reasoning is perfectly logical, but so cold and political it gives you the shivers.

Amata is right on both counts: They're either long dead or still alive, and, if so, you don't want to think about it right now. You have nothing and know nothing. You're just tormenting yourself.

"Now think of something else." She suggests.

"Alright." You nod. "Yu-Shan."

"Yu-Shan." She clearly regrets her last statement.

"Why wouldn't you let me go there?"

"Two good reasons. First, it would be a huge headache for me."

"Be serious."

"I AM serious. Second, there are people there who want you dead."

That last word shuts you up. You listen.

"And they have the power and the means to make that happen, believe me. You are a prime target for assassination right now. Maybe one of the top targets in all of Creation. In this exact moment, in Heaven, there are people whose day job is to come up with the best plan to assassinate you."

A shiver goes down your spine.

"There are also people whose day job is to find ways to keep you alive. And then there's me." She proclaims. "I made a deal with them. I will not let you go to Yu Shan. In exchange, they are going to stay put."

"Sounds like a shaky agreement."

"Very." She replies.

You get the feeling it's not all there is to it.

"But it'll buy us time."

"Time to do what?"

She makes a hand-wavey motion. "The less you know about celestial politics, the better. Trust me on this one. Don't get involved with this mess. Leave it to me. Just focus on being Maka."

"I'm quite good at that." You grin, rolling over her and pinning her down to the bed.

"Oh, look who's alive again." She replies, sounding duly impressed. "Second round?"

"Second round."

This would be a good-ish time to fast forward to the day of the wedding. You talked to pretty much everyone who had anything to say at this point, and made a lot of arrangements and plans.

It would be a 12-day skip. It's assumed that Maka keeps training the Steelshard Mercenaries, managing Pearl, and handling a daily routine.

If you don't want this timeskip, say so replying to this message and say what you'd like Maka to do (played out), instead.
Otherwise, feel free to say if there are things you want Maka to work towards or to try and do during this timeskip (keeping in mind that she can't use Tiger Warrior Training).

You also gain 2 XP for the passing of time, putting you at 14 XP, and can spend XP if you want. I'll write down your available charms in a second, but feel free to ask for specific charms, or for any custom charm you can think of.

>I think she already has some ideas on Tianna and the Titan herself,
That's good.

I've been thinking, keeping most of the island attached to the Titan will require lots of pilings to be driven down (or up?) through most of the land. Most could be made of simple rock, volcanic or otherwise with the help of flame. Those along the outer edge will require reinforcement with orichalcum. Maybe even retaining walls of orichalcum.

For the interior regions of the island I wonder if it would be possible to use some of the pilings to help build up terraced farmland?

Your timeskip in short:

>>43606932
Amata coaches you in the arcane secrets of Space Sex, but only up to Initiate rank. (that's how she explains it at least).

>>43606945
Zaan tells you he'll research methods to Enlighten mortals, but it might take a while to hit on a formula that works without bad side effects.

>>43606963
Amata smiles mysteriously.

>>43606994
You tease a lot of people.
There is an incident where you thought that you finally got Tia to cave in and ravish you good, but it was actually Millian wearing a Tia mask and her clothes and you only realized afterwards. Apparently this was Tia's idea. She got you good this time.

>>43607231
Aexel managed to learn the spell from Valeriana. He says getting her to put in the time required to teach him was harder than actually learning.

>>43607252
Silk did her trip, and drained the Demesnes all around the island. When you see her again, she has grown in power perceptibly. You kind of wonder if you did the right thing: now she's extremely powerful, even for a Fae locked into Creation. All that Essence plus the fact that she's surrounded by so many Exalted and can feed on such powerful stories and emotions, plus the increasing population of Pearl, make her probably one of the most powerful creation-bound Raksha of the east.

Background Familiar +1.

>>43607252
Your cult's growth has slowed down a bit from its explosive beginnings. It's still expanding, but it will take time for it to be a meaningful growth. Still, you and Pyre Spark keep working on it. It's become the island's main religion, although not the only one. The few remaining Immaculates have converted, left, or gone more or less underground.

>>43607269
Pearl grows rapidly as many refugees from the earthquake-stricken Tianna move over, thanks also to Mikahil establishing policies with incentives for people settling in the "new" western Tianna. You do some public speeches and apparitions, as well.

With Radiant's help, you enact Sneaky Maka Operation. It's quite hard to disguise yourself effectively, but Radiant's a pro, and with her help you manage to pull it off convincingly.

Overall, the opinion people have of you is generally extremely positive, though not unanimously. There are a variety of objections:

1) Maka is going to get us involved against the Realm, or Skullstone, and get us dragged in more wars.
2) Maka is a goddamn sex addict and thus dangerous and immoral. Also the facts of Dancing Smoke's Festival are still remembered, and it seems that whole event had some negative long-term effects. Cases of depressive behavior, divorces, even two suicides.
3) Queen Amata was doing a perfectly good job and then she got seduced by this stranger from a distant country who doesn't know how we do things here.

Your approval rating is higher in Pearl and lower in Tianna City, but that's probably because the people moving to pearl are those who are more okay with you.

Generally, this means that, as Pearl gets settled, there are more people willing to work for you.

Background Followers +1.

The Abyssal received what they asked for (all the captured Soulsteel, two ships and one warstrider) and moved over to the Underworld side of Tianna. They informed you that if you'll ever need them, the spot where the Dark Omen was destroyed will remain a Shadowland for a few years unless actively purified, so you could contact them from there. A crew of workers is carefully disassembling the wreck for usable parts (working only during the day and under Exalted supervision). The area has been fenced to prevent people wandering into the Shadowland by accident.

>3) Queen Amata was doing a perfectly good job and then she got seduced by this stranger from a distant country who doesn't know how we do things here.
These are all pretty valid concerns and number 2 is pretty sad to hear about, if not totally unexpected I suppose, we've been doing a sorta decent-ish job of keeping that down, but I mean, we still dress super sexy so we haven't really stopped all together.

Number 1 is right, we are going to get the people involved with them, we have pretty righteous reasons concerning Skullstone and the Realm is the one going to be bugging us, but it still our subjects that are going to suffer because of it, the least we can do is make it all worth it, make Tianna a kingdom to be proud of.

Number 3 is not wrong really, things we're okay-ish before we came and we don't really know a lot about the West, but they would have been attacked with or without us, we exalted because the Tyrant first attacked, so not entirely right either.

Other things that happen, in short:

Tianna's armed forces are being restructured, reorganized, and increased in size. Karas takes active part in this. He mentions to you that he's working to attain Tiger Warrior Training Technique, and is going through Amata and Samiel's collection of books and treatises on military strategy, tactics and logistics.

He says he intends to create and train an elite combat unit, as soon as he can find the right candidates and Valeriana can take her time to work on the Vodak suits and convert them back to Ashigaru, taking the soulsteel out and whatnot.

He also says that he looked into having another Warstrider or two made by dismantling and reassembling the core components of the Skullstonian units. As soon as Valeriana can look into that.

The navy is in stand by, in the process of being scrapped and replaced by the ships captured from Skullstone. As soon as Valeriana can spare the time to work on them.

Mysteriously, Glorious Tide doesn't show up again. You're too busy to go and check with the sea spirits, though, and Amata makes sure to keep you too busy to go and check on them, instead saying that she'll take care of them. You suspect she has her own business with them.

You brief the Gem Scout Mission on the city and everything they need to know. They're ready to leave right after the wedding ceremony.

As soon as Mikahil's gold currency starts to spread across the West, the fame of Tianna as a rich land of opportunities begins to outweigh the fame of Tianna as a cursed island plagued by Anathema. Immigration starts to soar.

The barbarians of northern Tianna finish their reorganization into the two main tribes (each composed of several sub-tribes): Black Fangs (Or sometimes Black Talons, apparently in their tribal language the word's the same), with Tia as chieftan, and Silver Wolves, with Talon as their chieftan.

The Black Fangs settle the plains of northwestern Tianna. They're seminomadic, trade with the townsfolk, and boast the strongest warriors and most skilled smiths and artisans. Their tradition of internal raid-based warfare between clans to steal cattle, women (or men), goods, or for matters of honor, inherited from previous tribes but actively encouraged by Tia, worries you a bit, but she reassures you that "it's a barbarian thing, let boys be boys", and also "keeps them sharp".

The Silver Wolves settle in the forests of northeastern Tianna. They're more reclusive, and seem to be generally more peaceful while at the same time more suspicious of outsiders. They generally focus more on fishing and boating, herbal and spiritual lore, and communion with the forest. Talon prefers to keep a hands-off approach to leadership.

Ultimately, Talon officially recognizes Tia as her chieftaness as far as tribal politics are concerned, making her the de facto boss of the barbarian population of Tianna.

Zaan is playing in his mind with the idea of somehow developing some high-yield crops or animals with a lot of meat to help sustain the barbarian population. Without "proper" agriculture, after all, they need a lot more land to hunt and gather in to support their population. For now, however, he says it's "just an idea"

I credited 1 XP for the plushie, but didn't see the second one in time. Given the votes, I was thinking Shining Ruler Benevolence, but recounting the votes it seems it's in the lead by just 1 vote, which is kind of a small margin for a Charm buy. I'm actually thinking of having Maka keep the Xp for now.

No? I don't see any reason why Tia would stand against this. She herself think it's nothing to worry about, but she supports her wife's fancy ideas like "ethics", most of the time

I personally don't really care as long as they stick to raiding each other and not anyone from the city, if it's part of barbarian tradition then for all we know it's the equivalent to an arranged marriage.

Tia does not count as a character with a consciousness. Did you not notice how she has basically no morals and the only thing keeping her in cheek is 'Maka would disapprove?'

Err, the first line. All of it, both sentences.

"Rape is forbidden inside my territory and on my subjects. Expect us to be enemies if you go against these rules."
>>
>>43608658

Not really, for the barbarians at most we'll be "the Chiefteness' wife". Tia is still in charge at most we can talk to her into doing things we want, but we can't go in and start giving orders
>>
>>43608424
It's fairly common among nomadic barbarian populations. As a non-barbarian it's okay to feel repulsed by that, but changing ancient traditions is not easy.

Tia seems to think that there's nothing particularly wrong about that, but she's a bit crazy herself, so yeah. If you ask her to change that tradition she'll probably do her best, however, she is also right in assuming that keeping a certain low level of internal warfare will keep her barbarians strong and used to conflict.

Realm armies are being recalled to the Blessed Island from all over the Treshold. An (in)famous Realm commander called Tepet Ejava, the "Roseblack", having received an order to return to the Realm alone to face a court of inquiry for alleged insubordination, has instead brought her entire legion with her. Miraculously this did not trigger the entire civil war (possibly because of some of her allies: the name of a Cathak Cainan is dropped here) but the situation is very VERY tense.

In the north, the Icewalker Tribes, led by the Solar known as the Bull of the North, are making sweeping conquests, and have arrived almost to the gates of Gethamane, Whitewall, and the Haslanti League. However, they have stopped just shy of them, even though they could have conceivably taken them by storm by now. There is tension and nervousness, and no one knows much of what is going, or what will happen.

No one is into getting raped and pillaged. That's in the definitions.

The barbarians acknowledge it may happen to them, and they like doing it to others, but they won't let it happen to themselves willingly.

In the east, two exceptional incidents are becoming the talk of Creation. Apparently the Lost City of Denandsor was somehow "conquered" by the Deathlord Walker in Darkness. A fight with a mysterious Circle featuring a mix of Exalted, including Solars, ensued, wrecking the cursed and abandoned city.
Another event was the near-sudden appearance of a powerful worm-like demon in a village somewhere between Nexus and Mishaka. This demon, almost certainly Third Circle by what you hear, was fought and somehow defeated by a circle of Exalted. It's not clear if the two incidents are connected, or if it's the same circle or two different groups of Exalted.

In the south, word is going around of strange apparitions featuring "machine men", nicknamed by some "Locusts" for their unsettling practice of appearing from nowhere, attacking isolated cities and settlements, mines, quarries and farms with overwhelming force, and taking literally everything that's not bolted down, and a lot of things that are, only to then mysteriously disappear.
Up to now no major city has been struck by them. It also seems like their modus operandi is inconsistent, as sometimes they'll take everything but spare the inhabitants, others they'll only kill whoever resists, and others they leave no survivors.

There's also stories about the number of incidents involving possession of the living by ghosts vastly increasing. Some believe this is the sign that something is wrong in the Land of the Dead, but no one can tell exactly why this is happening. As a result, exorcists, shamans and experts in the occult all across the south are finding themselves overworked.

This is not a decision you made. it's something that was already part of their culture when you showed up. You are being informed of this now that the political asset of the barbarian tribes has stabilized after reorganizing them.
And you know this, so don't pretend to be mad.

>>43608771
>The most likely one to win if you ask me is restructuring them and their customs.

This is absolutely on the table. Lunars have a set of charms built specifically for affecting the customs and traditions of barbarian tribes, this should tell you how often they do it.

It's totally something that you can affect and change. You should, however, ask yourselves how much.

Is kidnapping people wrong, but raiding to steal cattle fine? What if someone dies in a raid? Is it okay to let the family of the killed start a personal feud, should there be a system of redress like Weregild, or what?
Given enough time and effort you could go as far as to produce a tribe of utter pacifists with no inclination whatsoever towards violence, but don't expect them to be in any way effective on the battlefield at that point. (Tia would probably disagree as well.)

There's also to say that you haven't spent much time with the Black Fangs and don't know much about their actual culture. These are things you heard more or less in passing. You're in timeskip, however, and I think you have the time to spend a day with them and Tia, hearing from them about their customs and way of life. Do you want to do that?

Keychain of Creation was set in RY 773, five years after the standard Exalted start date. I THINK the quest is at the aforementioned start date, RY 768, but I don't think it was ever explicitly confirmed.

Of course, we did have a run-in with the King of Uncloaked Steel while he was in the service of the Silver Prince, so that certainly seems to imply that we're currently pre-Keychain.

(And considering that we knocked off the Silver Prince, we may have prevented poor Dernelle from ever exalting in the first place)
>>
If there's going to be trade and the like with the barbarians, won't it be almost inevitable that city folk visiting the tribes for trade etc. will also fall victim to the raids?
I mean, if you go and raid a camp or something are you going to ask people where they're from before you kill/kidnap them?

And can we ask our soldiers/watchemnt/whatever law enforcement here is to stand by and watch as people are raped and kidnapped right before their eyes?

This is improbable, but we could always instruct the barbarians to not pillage and rape in certain months/seasons of trade and whatever.

You know, I see people say we 'redeemed' Tyrant, or convinced her her actions were wrong. A few points anon

1. Nobody said you can't defend yourselves or others from a raid or kidnapping attempt.

2. If the barbarians regularly abuse city traders then trade will cease and the barbarians will lose out on sources of iron and other essential resources. Barbarian tribes would have a vested interest to rein in raiders on city traders in order to keep up the supply of useful materials, they'll be self policing to a degree.

3. Give it time anon, they'll gentrify and their raiding culture will become more and more unacceptable to themselves as they become more sedentary and farming focused.

Then their rivals would have an interest in protecting city traders and the tribe of guys raiding them would have to deal with trade caravan guards AND their rivals.

Plus the raiders need iron too and unless they plan on becoming wild raiders that only pillage and never trade with anybody they'll have to stop themselves or be left behind by their better equipped and better fed enemies.

And if they DO become wild raiders focused on looting then they'll get stamped out like any other nest of bandits or outlaws.

She only really went against it in a moment of crisis, both times we saw her after that she still held Maka in high regards and stayed behind to hold off Silver Prince, whether or not she would have still gone after the Titan if she had lived is a moot point since she died, but she didn't completely fall at the end.

We didn't really do this, but we convinced her that she could try to become a better person and find redemption. She agreed on at least give it a try, stopping the "let's kill everyone because fuck them for my life and unlife" attitude.

> I may be missing something here, but didn't she flip us the bird, go after the Titan anyway, get slapped down by the Silver Prince for her troubles and then all we did was apply the Zenith anima ability to make her soul go to Lethe? I don't see how that constitutes convincing her of anything.

She went in her equivalent of Limit Break, after losing nearly everything in one attack.

And keep in mind she didn't go back doing actively malevolent things, she went "this is over, we're going to lose, so I will go on with my plan to destroy the horrifying abominations that will punish me if I die before them".

In the end, she did earn a bit of redemption, and without her we couldn't have won. Ironicaly, her breakdown lead to sacrificing herself for everyone, something that could have been avoided.
>>
>>43609288
Because I never brought that up as one of my own points. I know that what happened with her underlings wasnt our say, I just look at the idea that we 'Redeemed' her and see it as being a bit hollow. My point was a seperate one from the question of her Abyssals.

>>
>>43609296
Cooperation and trade will bring them around to a more civil way of life anon. The consensus is to let them do whatever they want "among themselves" If they start attacking hamlets of city residents or assaulting trade caravans then they're fair game for the regular forces of Tianna and Pearl.

I wouldn't worry about their raiding culture for very long, it's likely to become more and more unacceptable among the barbarians as they become more settled and used to trading with the cities.

Plus as a Solar we can nudge them towards the peaceful gentrification. We don't need to mind whammy them into line, they'll come on their own accord

Answering all the questions (I hope) on barbarian customs.

Within the Black Fangs there are seven sub-tribes, essentially "clans". The largest of these are further fractured.

All these people still consider themselves as part of the same "tribe" and the same people. They will fight united against outside threats and so on.

Before Skullstone's invasion, these tribes had never experienced "total war". Even the idea of fighting to destroy an enemy group is quite alien to them. For the barbarian mindset, fighting is something you do to conquer something, and fighting destructively is incredibly stupid.

Gaining control of something through force of arms is quite normal. It's not quite might-makes-right mentality, because even though they seem largely lawless to a city-dweller's eyes, they have a lot of rules and customs.

The most common and widespread kind of internal conflict is the raid. In a raid, a clan assembles a war party of volunteers and goes to steal another clan's possessions, generally cattle, manufactured goods, resources or food. These are low-lethality actions, because the objective of the raiders is to steal and the objective of the raided is to drive away the raiders.
The most skilled raiders are, of course, those who manage to disappear with the loot but without alerting anyone, in the dead of the night.
These actions do have their fair share of wounded and dead, however. Still, it's very low, as the fights are small and ritualized.
As a custom, there's no blood feud for someone killed in a raid, whether attacker or defender (it's considered a "lawful killing"). Some take exception to this, but if they pursue vengeance, their actions are not condoned by tribal law and the revenge is considered an unlawful killing.

It's considered both bad form and a dumb move to raid an already-poor clan. Generally, at any one time, it's the richest, strongest clan the one that suffer the most raids.

Yeah but many cultures throughout our own history raided constantly but trade and increasing food supplies due to agriculture made said raiding culturally unacceptable. Same shit with dueling, the barbarians will maintain this ancient tradition for a bit longer but the improved quality of life offered by better products will bring them around.

That said we should nudge them to speed the process up. There's no question in my mind that they'll abandon their raiding ways, it's only a matter of when.

>tone of the earlier mention of the raiding
What tone?

All he said was
> Their tradition of internal raid-based warfare between clans to steal cattle, women (or men), goods, or for matters of honor, inherited from previous tribes but actively encouraged by Tia, worries you a bit, but she reassures you that "it's a barbarian thing, let boys be boys", and also "keeps them sharp".
No mention of burning, raping, killing, or pillaging
>>
Why did you faggots argue so much about something that is kept among barbarians only?
>>
Sometimes, when a raid steals a particularly prized treasure belonging to one clan, it is generally ransomed back. The raided clan loses face for not being able to protect its treasure in the process.

The second most common type of internal conflict is the Ordeal. To settle grudges or disagreements, or to decide in cases where tribal law, proof and testimony does not favor either side, two champions are chosen and fight it out in a ritual arena.
If you ask for an ordeal when you're clearly at fault and there's solid proof or testimony against you, you just end up looking even more guilty. Ordeals are generally used for personal grudges, to end or prevent blood feuds, or to settle affairs where tribal law and the elders and chieftans cannot accurately determine who is in the right or in the wrong.

Ordeals go by a very precise set of rules to ensure a fair fight. They go on until someone surrenders, dies, or is clearly unable to keep fighting. Lethality is about 15%~25%

The kidnapping is actually the most uncommon case of tribal conflict, because it means that a tribe must end up, somehow, with a rather large gender disparity.

If there are two tribes with opposite gender disparities (one has too many men, the other too many women), the "kidnapping" is a purely ritual affair, acted out like a genuine kidnapping but with the tacit agreement of both factions.(that doesn't mean that the individuals switching clan are okay with that, of course, but it's not any worse or any better than the "civilized" custom of arranged marriages).

However, if no other tribe is up for it, then it happens by force. The same set of "rules" of a cattle raid apply.

Of course, people are not cattle, and this kind of "raid" is much more likely to severely strain relations for years to come. However, sometimes it actually improves relations in the longer term, as the two tribes "mix their blood" and become closer.

Barbarians in Tianna are not in the habit of kidnapping city-dwellers. They're not of their people, and no one wants a husband who cannot hunt and skin a deer or a wife who doesn't know how to tan a hide and paint it.

At least, that's the way it is now. Talon and Amata both explain to you that the barbarians were perfectly alright with kidnapping city-dwellers in the past.

After a series of punitive raids courtesy of Amata, they became less inclined to do so, and when Talon started taking the tribes over, he continued in that direction because he didn't want the barbarians to come too much into contact with them.

Another similar case is when two individuals of two different tribes, who do not have the approval of their families to marry, elope. This is played out like a kidnapping raid. If the fugitives are not caught by the next full moon, if counts as a marriage.

There are times where everyone is "on" to it and the raid is just a pretense: the families can't officially agree to the marriage for political reasons, so the "kidnapping" absolves them from responsibility. There are also cases in which one of the two parts is entirely unwilling. And pretty much anything in-between.

According to what you hear, that happened a few times. Tribal law considers it a lawful killing. The tribals seem to consider it a very borderline case, however. Even considering the circumstances, to them it's still the murder of a fellow tribesman in cold blood.

You have to wonder how many victims were not alright with being kidnapped but not SO MUCH not alright with it to take someone's life.

This may come as a surprise to you anon but generally even barbarian cultures disliked having their stuff taken and their people killed, raped and kidnapped.

9 times out of 10 a raid happens because the people in question want more food or livestock so they don't have to scratch by. The raiders know they wouldn't want to be raided but they still want/need more stuff.

Stop trying to analyze a barbarian culture by modern real world ethics, think about it based on context and situation.

Yeah, I'm wary of calling a vote here because I really get the feeling that this is one of those hotly contested topics that will get multivoted to hell and back.

I think I'll just go with the flow of the discussion I perceived, which is: these customs are GENERALLY alright but there's space for improvement, going more in the direction of ritualized actions (see: the "Olympics" proposal).

I think the real question is: do you see any merit in letting these people keep their barbarian lifestyle, or do you want to take measures to "civilize" them, and, if so, how suddenly? (keep in mind that this will probably not sit too well with your Lunars).

Also, I'm sure I don't need to point this out, but "civilized" people kill, steal and rape each other just as much as barbarians do. That's not going to change, barring social engineering projects that would probably take you decades or centuries. So don't make the assumption that they will become "nicer" if you get them to settle down.

but their cultures don't consider it lawful. You can dress it up with rituals and 'isn't usually done' as much as you want, you don't get away with killing people who's cattle you want to steal in a civilised society.

and my vote is to slowly work towards assimilating them/making them more 'civilised'

>You people need to play more King of Dragon Pass
I was literally just about to post this shit. First thing I thought of when the raids were mentioned.
>>
>>43610129
I say leave them to their own devices, the ritualized raids will die down on their own over time as they become more prosperous and raiding becomes a ridiculous risk for an unnecessary reward.
>>
>>43610129
>I think the real question is: do you see any merit in letting these people keep their barbarian lifestyle, or do you want to take measures to "civilize" them, and, if so, how suddenly? (keep in mind that this will probably not sit too well with your Lunars).
I don't see any real merit in it, except maybe not upsetting the Lunars. If that's enough or not, I dunno.

>>43610175
Barbaric cultures generally also don't see raids as "lawful". Throughout history raiding like that generally led to blood feuds and counter raiding.

It sounds like whatever tribal elders are around got together to try to curb the worst of it and impose some level of ritual on it so the various barbarian clans didn't get consumed in endless vendetta killings.

Give it time anon, they'll curb their own raiding as they become more prosperous. There's plenty of real world historical precedent to back that behavior.
>>
>>43610252
>As a custom, there's no blood feud for someone killed in a raid, whether attacker or defender (it's considered a "lawful killing"

You are objectively wrong.
>>
Next thread will start with the wedding. Seems like the appropriate way to celebrate Thread #100.

Until this thread expires we can talk about the timeskip. Did I forget about anything, or do you have any questions about the things going on?

>>43610175
>but their cultures don't consider it lawful.

Coral is a nation founded entirely on piracy and legalized theft. The people of the Neck throw people into volcanoes. And I don't need to tell you what Skullstone does. Slavery is commonplace throughout creation, and particularly hideous and exploitative in the Realm colonies along the northern coast. And the Guild routinely sells people to the Fair Folk. All these populations are "civilized" and everything they're doing is perfectly condoned by the laws of their state.
>>
>>43610281
I guess we should all stop playing Exalted then, since nothing in it is actually true.
>>
>>43610287
And those are all big reasons why the Haslanti tribes united and kicked the Guild out of their territory.
>>
>>43610281
Except it sounds like said "custom" was tacitly agreed upon to prevent exactly what I was talking about.

Without said custom each clan would counter raid to get revenge and steal their stuff back and then some.

Going by what Talon and Amata are saying, there's been a conscious effort into adapting the barbarian cultural habits, over time into a structure that would:
1) let them form larger and more coherent tribes
2) cause them less internal conflict and strife
3) be less actively hostile to city-dwellers

Point 3) in particular is mostly because Tianna is an island, where barbarians and city-dwellers are more or less forced to coexist.

>>43610425
I think Maka's sparring match with Tia has put to rest any questionings of that in the Black Fangs.
>>
>>43610425
Doesn't change the fact that Maka would be an outsider to their tribe and way of life. If some schmo showed up and started telling you how everything you do is wrong and how they know better than you would you agree and listen to them or tell them to fuck off?

Well, you are the big news of the West. You haven't heard of any other big event going on at the time.

>>43610337
>Has Pearl gotten more city-ish since the sudden immigration? How has our little lap god Jewel been?
Sort of, it had a growth spurt, but it'll still be a few months before it can look like a proper "city". Jewel is as noncommittal as usual, but you think he's actually happy.

>>43610349
>Who did we invite, from outside the island?
I don't kinow, who did you invite? I don't think Maka personally knows anyone around the West outside Tianna.

>>43610356
>Oh it's been at least two weeks, how did the mock battles with the Steelshards go?
They really gave you one hell of a fight. It's obvious they have experience in fighting against supernatural enemies.

In the end, they managed to subdue you, though almost 4/5th of their entire force was knocked out by then.

Considering that they didn't have to hold back, and you did... well, if you could've fought without holding back, you would've MAYBE taken them out, but just barely.
But they've also been very lucky, or maybe you've been quite unlucky in the sparring match. They got a lot of shots and hits on you that you could've avoided or parried on a good day, probably.

Judging by the look on their faces, they probably know that they've been lucky, and, now that you know their tactics better, you would probably trounce them in a second match.
>>
>>43610462
well, if the outsider has social charms out the wazoo? I'd do what they say.

>>
>>43610494
We aren't using ultra mindfuck charms in social situations though, we just use the personal charisma boosters.

The Lunars effectively joined various tribes or formed new ones to get the influence they needed to get them to listen and do what they said.

>>
>>43610363
>So, wouldn't they agree with our tries at abolishing raiding, if Maka's efforts would basically be in the same direction as those of Talon?

Talon wants them to be more "manageable" and less self-destructive, but wants to keep them barbarians, and argues that abolishing raiding would be like sawing off a tiger's fangs and feeding it soup through a straw for the rest of its life.

He's probably being a bit melodramatic about this, but you do understand his point of view.

>>43610366
>Is there anything we can do for the families of those who committed suicide? Can we at least ensure they are testing peacefully?

Well, you can make them test some new gravestones, that's about it.

...Sorry. Yes, you take care of that. Their families aren't going to hate you any less because of this, but you're not doing it to be liked.

Considering you have Lunars with you, you're fairly sure their influence is going to make sure the barbarians stay barbarian and don't become sedentary. Zaan even has some ideas for helping sustaining their number without them having to change to a sedentary lifestyle, like said in >>43608405

>>43610490
>I don't kinow, who did you invite?
Maka would invite her family, but alas. Everyone able to show up that she knows is in the island already.

I guess it's more "Who did Amata invite?" Tia has her lunar friends, but Amata has an entire host of gods. Mikahil might want to have certain deities invited too, like the god of gambling.

>>
>>43610683
Long and straight.

>>43610696
The Thousand Streams is generally about creating a new successful civilization, not about creating a successful SEDENTARY civilization.

In any case, Tia doesn't seem to care about the Thousand Streams, and Talon did a half-hearted attempt which you accidentally wrecked when you turned this island into a mess of Exalted, so, at this point, neither of their tribes is actively part of the Thousand Streams River project.

>>43610699
Oh, him.
We can say that it happened in the middle of the fight and then Maka knocked him into the middle of next week.
"Worth it." was his comment when he regained the ability to talk.

>>43610747
Whatever they're doing, it's working.
Keep in mind that, on average, a hunter-gatherer lives a much easier life than a farmer as far as toughness of labor and spare time go, and is also more free to travel and pursue personal interests.
Of course, a hunter-gatherer requires not just a lot more land than a farmer to sustain himself, but he must necessarily live in a society where most if not all are hunter-gatherers as well. Go too far into the division and specialization of labor, and suddenly things change.

>>43610891
Pretty much.

>>43610903
That's a comfortable point of view coming from someone living in 21st century Earth, but we're talking about a fantasy world full of magical people.
Here, the conditions are different and, after spending some time with the Black Fangs, even Maka has to wonder if it applies, or if the argument for a barbarian way of life has some sense to it.

Or if, maybe, the future is a balance of the two. If it is, a place like Tianna where both can try and coexist side by side might be the right place where to test it out.

>>43610761

I say leave them as they are. Normal humans, just can't operate effective in large numbers without someone protecting from magic effects.

The main reason the Thousand Streams project never went anywhere is it started from a wrong direction. It should have asked what would a truly independent civilization need, then built the culture around that.

At a guess everyone being forced trained to the maximum level in what they are most talented at, regardless of personal enjoyment. Learning custom martial arts styles, to further improve, and being inducted into sorcery, to learn spells to improve beyond even that.
