You are Urist Twelfthbay. You are the moe personification of Dwarf Fortress, and are a short, sturdy creature fond of drink and industry- in other words, a dwarf. You have the goddess of Planeptune and all things Sega bouncing around inside your braided noggin.

How's that one song go again? "One of these things is not like the other, one of these things will drive you absolutely batshit insane"?

So, yeah. So you had a particularly strange dream, followed by an unlikely string of coincidences: your telepathic Therapist ability just so happened to gain an untested upgrade, Neptune just so happened to be glitched out, and (as far as you know), this all just so happened to create some sort of cross-dimensional technobabble link. And thus, the wandering spirit of the scrawny purple-haired goddess known best for her air-headed unpredictability is now housed inside your head.

If you weren't at risk of getting annoyed to death, you'd laugh at how contrived this all is.

>[X] [UNDERSTOOD] Let Histoire focus on how to get Neptune out of your head- the sooner, the better.

You wipe away your tears and turn in Mojang's lap, giving Histoire the go-ahead. The floating Gamindustri Key Fragments bob in place, mimicking a curtsy or a nod or whatever.

>Mmhm. Don't worry, Urist and Neptune. I'll have something for you by tomorrow. Until then...

Histoire yawns again, cutting herself off; in this much-reduced and divvied-up form, she's fast running out of juice, and it'll be another day before she wakes up again. You're a little frustrated that you wasted so much of her awake time freaking out, and lost the chance to ask her more questions.

>... please be careful. Your brain carries the consciousness of one of Gamindustri's goddesses; should anything happen to her, I shudder to think what might happen to Planeptune. And mortal bodies aren't designed to... house the power of the goddesses...

Oh, well THAT'S not at all foreboding at all. Before you can ask her to elaborate, Neptune chips in.

((Got it, Histoire! You don't have to worry a thing about us- we're a great duo! Like, I'm a goddess! She's a dwarf! Together, we fight-))

Histoire's rocks clatter to the ground, inert once more.

((... crime,)) Neptune finishes lamely. ((Dang.))

You let out a sigh, feeling half-ready to crawl back into bed. Mojang's arms tighten around you- you hadn't even realized that the Minecrafter had pulled you into a worried hug.

Well, shit, no wonder she's worried. You haven't broken down like that since- jeez, you don't even REMEMBER when.

"Oneechan? Are... are you okay?" she asks carefully, stroking your hair like you're some sort of big overgrown cat. Mojang hesitates. "And, um, Lady Neptune?"

[ ] [APOLOGIZE] for making her worry. You're okay now, and she really shouldn't have seen you flipping the hell out.
[ ] [MOJANG] Deflect her question, ask her about her sleeping arrangements last night. She set her bed up next to the big lode of Sharicite? Really?

It's okay, it's okay, the alcohol stocks are quickly being refilled with honest to Armok DF alcohol.
>>
>>43631506
>[X] [MOJANG]
>[X] [BOOZE]

You know what? It's true. You really are too sober for this shit. In seconds, you've got your primary flask out, and homegrown home-brewed alcohol flows down your parched throat. Some of the tension leaves your body, replaced by that familiar warmth radiating out from your stomach.

((Whoa! You're really packing that away, huh, Urist?))

... SOME of the tension, not all. You squeeze your eyes shut as that annoyingly perky voice intrudes on your thoughts. That really didn't affect Neptune at all, did it.

((Nope! But that's a good thing, right? You can get totally smashed, and I'll be stone cold sober and able to help you out! See? This is a GREAT arrangement! I can totally be your designated driver!))

Backseat driver, more like!

"Oneechan..."

O-Oh. Right, right, you didn't mean to ignore Mojang- but then again, you don't really want to get into all that touchy-feely stuff so early in the morning.

You push yourself up out of her lap and crawl back to your feet, studiously ignoring her gaze (and Neptune had better not be leering at you from the inside of your brain). Yeah, you're fine- and, uh, thanks. And all that. More importantly, why was Mojang sleeping in the stockpile room last night?

Mojang twitches like she's been struck. "E-Eh? No, that's- you're deflecting! But, um! How did you know?"

... Armok help you, she's an absolutely terrible liar and a worse poker player.

Because if she'd been in one of the other bedrooms, she wouldn't have heard you through a shitload of stone doors and walls, you point out reasonably. Also, Therapist. Now c'mon, fess up- she saw you being embarrassing, and now it's your turn. Fair's fair, right?

The Minecrafter turns red, staring down at the floor and shuffling her feet. Her response is too quiet for you to hear.

Huh? What was that?

"Because I'm, I'm kind of- you know!" Mojang whimpers, flicking her eyes up toward you. "Don't make me say it in front of her!!"

(Cont.)
>>
>>43632180
((Eeeh~? C'mon, it's fine!)) Neptune insists, even as you frown thoughtfully. ((Urist and I are inseparable! And I'm trustworthy! We're bosom buddies! Well, not literally, but you know what I mean.))

You ignore the goddess, cursing yourself for not having realized it earlier. Mojang's a lot of things, and she's no coward, but... well, she's sort of got this slight fear of the dark. Your surrogate little sister can function just fine without any light source, but she doesn't feel /safe/ without a few dozen torches lighting up her immediate surroundings. Without those available, the Sharicite lode is the closest thing you've got.

You can't blame her, because the monsters under HER bed are very, very real.

Scratching your head, you come to a decision. You're all gonna head out at some point, right? So there are bound to be enough trees left standing for a good lumber industry, and more than enough to make charcoal and shit like that. Either way, you've got her covered.

Mojang brightens up, the worry dissipating from her expression like it never existed in the first place. "Oh... okay! Great! Then- I'm counting on you, Oneechan!!" she chirrups. "I'll go mine out some stone for a furnace right now!"

You breathe out a sigh as your surrogate little sister runs off, all sunshine and rainbows again. Okay, so you've apparently promised to go out and chop down some lumber for her, but it's not anything you wouldn't have done anyway. And at least she isn't hung up about your near-breakdown, and that's all that matters.

((... okay! Well, the world's our oyster, Urist!)) Neptune chimes in, interrupting your thoughts again. ((What're we gonna do? Save Gamindustri? Hunt down Arfoire? Find a monster-spawning area and grind our butts off over bounties and item collection quests??))

If Armok has any goddamned mercy, you'll be doing NONE of those things.

Neptune keeps talking, totally undeterred. ((Whatever we plan to do, you should probably change out of your jammies first!))

What the- oh, goddammit. Right. You're only wearing a shift. Through all this dramatic tomfoolery, you've been in your pajamas. Time to go put on your armor and figure out what the day has in store for you.

((... holy crackers, I guess we're not literally bosom buddies after all! I mean, you're not fla-))

GodDAMMIT, Neptune!

[SCOUT & THERAPIST] I recall something about this place shifting over time, right? Let's see what treasure islands and/or displaced PC adventurers are in sight today.

Also, ask Neptune exactly what she's seeing/hearing right now. Is she seeing through your eyes, or does she have some kind of top-down or third person camera somehow?

(A question: how does gravity work here? Is it like Xen from Half-Life, with consistent downward gravity pulling into the emptiness, or do the various chunks have enough gravity to pull a bit? I'm having trouble visualizing how we're moving from island to slisland, and the idea that one slip may lead to an eternity falling through and endless void with only Neptune for company is terrifying.)
>>
>>43632579
A little of both, actually! There's a consistent "gravity" (although it's not always pointing 'down'), but the floating islands have their own pulls, impossibly out of proportion to their small sizes.
>>
>>43632634
So is it not possible to jump down into an endless void, with the nearest land mass pulling us back up?

Honestly? The latter is much, much easier than the former. First things first, you gather up a small pile of stones and make the entrance tunnel that much narrower. Anyone intruders will have to file in one at a time, and you and your defenders'll be able to hold them off pretty easily.

After that, well... since all you've got is that drawbridge, you need a cheap, easy last line of defense. So a few rock mechanisms and the last few pieces of lumber later, you've got yourself two rows of the humble cage trap, capable of catching anything short of a horrific death-dealing megabeast or another adventurer.

Anything bigger and more drastic can come later. Time's-a-wasting, after all.

And it would REALLY, REALLY HELP if Neptune didn't stop suggesting ridiculously improbable traps, thank you very fucking much.

((Come ooon, there's nothing more classic than the endless pit or the wall of instakill spikes!)) the goddess whines.

You roll your eyes as you tromp back to the storeroom. You don't have ROOM for endless pits, and any pit less than endless would just get stupidly messy, you growl. And you don't have the means to create instakill spikes.

((Boo. You're no fun, Urist!))

Oh, you're PLENTY of !!fun!!. You park yourself in front of the big lode of Sharicite smack-dab in the middle of your storage area, shooing away a rat- it scurries into a crack in the wall. That's a good sign; as far as you can tell, no more ocean vermin means the ocean outside has receded.

For a few minutes, you squint at the gently pulsing rock, mildly relieved when you don't feel any sudden jolts or bursts of power or whatever. You take Neptune's silence as a sign that she's looking it over too.

... you desperately pray that HER inspection is a good sight more useful than yours is. Because seriously, you're not getting anywhere. It's a big glowy important rock that the goddesses depend on for life, but to your big stupid dwarf eyes? Sharicite's just another kind of stone. If you could actually break chunks off of it (without dying horribly), you'd even be able to use it in crafting or shit like that. Besides, you're not nearly special enough to find any hidden meaning or use for the stuff.

You frown. So, is NEPTUNE finding out anything useful?

((... well, it's a really, really big chunk of plot-important stone!)) she offers helpfully. Her wistful mental sigh preempts your cutting retort, though. ((Wow, this really takes me back... when I was first starting out, my starting chunk of plot-important stone was about this big, too!))

Right, you snort. That's great to know in case any long-lost void-spawned goddesses decide to take up residence in your fortress. So there's nothing weird happening, right? No strange connections between Neptune and this chunk of Sharicite? No big revelations?

((Umm... I'unno! Is "Urist Twelfthbay: 5% Neptunized" important?))

...

Right. Histoire had better come up with a solution by tomorrow, or you're going to make EVERY prepared meal eggplant-based in some fashion or other.

I was speaking of my own experiences, but I'd think that Urist specifically wouldn't be well versed in that. Some long running series have changed plenty, but Urist represents a single game that technically isn't even complete yet, so even with the bugsnandnpatchs she should still have a pretty solid sense of self. Especially since she clawed her way up to that level of identity from her starts reciting things like "Urist McTwelvebay cancels Learn Social Skills: Interrupted by Fort Building".
>>
>>43633414
believe me, I'd be worried too, but we JUST had the dream sequence where Urist accepted that she was more than a dwarf, she was ALL dwarves.

But the moment she realizes that Neptunized could mean NOT being a dwarf, all bets are off.

Right. You'd better get a move on, because if what Histoire said about the hyperdimensional void's orbit is correct, then that means you've got a pretty small window in which to find other adventurers.

Briefly, you think back to Dao and Lian, along with those other two unknowns. Sure, their former positions ought to circle back around in the due course of time, but they probably won't be there anymore.

Whatever. You walk over and pull the lever that connects to the front drawbridge, and you squint against the sudden light cast by the swirling void and all its stars as they become visible again. That done, you start walking outside, squelching through the salt-streaked mud and ruined, flooded vegetation.

All the while, you're harping at Neptune.

So yeah! No shit! Of COURSE "5% Neptunized" is goddamned important! You don't even know what it ENTAILS, but you know goddamned well that it's something you oughta be keeping an eye on!!

((Whoa! Down, girl, down! I'm sure it'll all work out somehow!))

What, with Neptune taking over your mind or turning you into a carbon copy!?

((Hey, come on, I wouldn't do something like that!)) Neptune soothes. ((I don't do that kind of thing to my friends!))

You slow down. Really? She considers you a /friend/?

((Sure! We fought alongside each other, right? We formed up an adventuring group, right?))

For all of one hour!

You can /feel/ Neptune's sage nodding, even if you can't see it. ((Well, I don't know about you, but that's good enough for me. Friends, Urist! We're the strongest party!))

Yeah, you're not seeing a whole lot of benefits to this arrangement.

((What!? No benefits? How can you say that our relationship is without benefits!?)) Neptune sounds either incensed or melodramatic, you can't tell which. ((Well, what if I did something like... THIS!?))

A sudden burst of wind shunts back a foot, and your braids stream out behind you- you're forced to squint as a burst of purple light nearly blinds you.

But for a moment- just for a moment- you see a ghostly afterimage of Neptune in all her powered-up glory: a leggy, statuesque CPU Purple Heart in full-fledged HDD mode, her ridiculously ornate sword seeming to slice fast enough to cut through the void itself.

As quickly as she appeared, she's gone, with the only proof of her existence being a worryingly long furrow slashed through the mud itself. Alright, you... you have to admit that that COULD be pretty useful.

((See? I can totally make this arrangement worth your while!)) Neptune boasts. ((So you don't even have to break a swe- ah.))

... ah? What's she mean by 'ah'?

((Um... so, that number we talked about- was it always 8% Neptunized?))

You squeeze your eyes shut, counting backwards from ten. Neptune?

((Yes?))

That HDD attack DOES look really useful. Thanks for that, you guess.

((Oh! Yeah, you're-))

But for fuck's sake, don't do that shit again without your express permission, okay? Or unless you're about to die or whatever! Got that!?

Also, does anyone more knowledgeable about the series know any way to make Neptune understand the seriousness of a situation? She's going to frigging "help" us into personality death. Dorfs may be known for dying in random ways but "Had body taken over by goddess through a combination of prophetic dreams, telepathy, and comas that want covered by the warranty" is a pretty ignoble way to go.

Blorp doesn't like/want to make a characters for relatively new games, so I doubt an unreleased one would make it even less.
>>
>>43633720
Still unknown, actually!

Thravar is a dumb mashup of two of her characters' names, Farrah shares its first letter with her game's name and its meaning is the last word of her game's name, and Tiff is... basically her game's name straight-up.

>>43633783
>>43633850
Definitely not Overwatch! But yeah, I'm avoiding games that are too new.

That sounds fairly dwarfy.
>>
>>43633850
My instinct would be to have unreleased games that are still proper 'games' (Like betas and completed games that haven't come out yet) be children, except everyone is 11 year old girls already.
>>

>[X] [TIFF]

A floating island with holes in it, huh. You jog over to the edge of Endinomon, your realm, and squint into the void. It's a barely-visible smudge in the distance, but even from here, it looks more like an asteroid than anything else.

... huh. If you're lucky, there'll be rare ores (or assorted coals) for the picking. If you're REALLY lucky, you won't get your ass chewed off by monsters when you try prying them out of the rock, but... yeah, given how your life's been going thus far, you really, really doubt that.

Neptune seems positively giddy, and you swear you feel some of that happiness bleed off into you before you catch yourself. ((Ooh! We're swooping in to save the day, right?)) she gushes.

Hah. Well, for all you know, whoever she is ain't actually in danger. Maybe she's just out on a... a /jog/, or something.

Someone needs saving maybe.

((Oh, c'mon, Urist! What're the chances of something boring like that happening?)) she replies. ((It's always going to be something properly dramatic! That's how Gamindustri works!))

But we're not in-

((- not in Gamindustri, yeah, yeah, I know! But.)) Neptune's "voice" lowers to a conspiratorial whisper. ((Does /Gamindustri/ know that?))

... that's... that's either the dumbest or the smartest thing to come out of Neptune's mouth.

((Eheheh.))

That's not a compliment, goddammit. You rub your face with a grimace, feeling too damn exhausted to play the tsukkomi to her boke. Right. Now to figure out who you're bringing along...

>CHOOSE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING!
[ ] [BRING MOJANG] You can trust little sis to watch your back. Between her tools and her mining abilities, you'll both form a very specialized team; Doomgirl can stay at home and guard the base real damn well, too.
[ ] [BRING DOOMGIRL] There's a lot you can say about her, but Doomgirl's still a superhuman marine well-versed in the arts of explosive violence. Mojang can stay at home; she knows exactly how your base defenses work.
[ ] [ALL IN] There's safety in numbers. You're sure that leaving your base open for just one more day should be okay, especially with the traps you've put in.
[ ] [ALL IN & SUMMON] Same as above, but try summoning some dwarf minions this time. If it works, you'll have someone to close the drawbridge behind you when you leave!
[ ] [GO SOLO] You (and Neptune) should be more than enough for this little excursion. Keeping the other two at home will leave your fortress in very safe hands.

DONT SPLIT THE PARTY
>>

Mojang has experience with building and defending bases, and Doomgirl has experience moving fast and fighting horrific monsters in otherworldly dimensions. It's perfect!

Not leaving anyone alone.

When Urist talks to Neptune, to an outsider she seems to be talking to herself, right? Didn't Doomgirl seem to talk to herself too?

Iiiiiii don't think she has the same reason for talking to herself that we do...

Don't want Doomgirl killing anyone.
Also, if we leave her here she can operate the drawbridge, protecting the fortress while we're gone.

Doomgirl isn't hard to find- she's pacing back and forth in front of the first cavern layer, twitchy as always. For some reason that you /really/ don't want to ask, she's sniffing the air, sniffing the rough stone walls, and she even gets down on all fours to press her nose against closed drawbridge.

That doesn't stop her from whipping out a nasty-looking gun the moment she senses your approach, but she lowers it when she recognizes you (which takes far too long, in your opinion). "Oh. You. What's up, doc? Need someone killed?"

It takes you a moment to get your heartbeat back under control, but you're damn proud of how you're able to keep up your gruff no-nonsense facade. You growl back a negative, but tell her that you HAVE found another adventurer-

"To kill?"

Goddammit, no! You're trying to /save/ her!

"Oh." To your mild horror, Doomgirl seems a little sad at that. "Alas. What's the use of having a big fucking gun if you can't use it to mow down hordes of deserving demons and assholes? Criminal, if you ask me," she opines, shaking her head. "Wasn't asking /you/," she snaps a second later, possibly to a voice you can't (and don't want to) hear.

... right. You hitch your thumbs in your belt, studying the ceiling. Well, it DID seem like she was being chased, so there's a good chance that-

"You had me at 'chased,'" Doomgirl growls, a worrisome fire in her eyes. "Let's rock an' roll, dwarf. Hell yeah!"

Unsurprisingly, Mojang isn't exactly happy with this decision.

"Oneechan, are..." She shoots a glance at Doomgirl, who's already out past the entrance (and arguing with a patch of mud). "Are you sure you're going to be okay?"

... seriously, that's the question you ask yourself every time you go outside.

Mojang gives you a /look/, and you relent. You're not worried about Doomgirl; she knows what she's doing, and she's not THAT crazy. Probably. More importantly, you need your surrogate little sister /here/ to watch over the fortress: she can toss up walls if shit starts going bad, and between Mojang and Doomgirl, you know who you'd trust to watch over the small starter farms you've got up and running.

"Alright, I... well, you've got a point!" She still doesn't look /entirely/ convinced, but she nods after a moment, brightening right back up. She's always good at sending people off with a smile. "Be careful out there, okay? In the meantime, I'll see what I can do to fortify Hyperdimension!"

Attagirl. Yeah, you'll be careful. You clap Mojang on the shoulder(blade) before following Doomgirl out of the fortress. After a moment, you address Neptune- she's been pretty quiet lately. Should you be worried?

The goddess sounds uncharacteristically thoughtful. ((Well, I just figured... Doomgirl hears voices, right?))

You shoot a glance at the doomed marine. She's currently talking to herself again, holding an entire argument with whoever she's talking to, so... yeah. Seems that way.

((I don't think she'd take very well to hearing another disembodied voice!)) Neptune chirrups. ((She'd probably try to shoot you. And me, by extension. So let's avoid that!))

... holy hell. Is- is Neptune learning /tact/?

((Hey! I know plenty of tact!)) she replies, puffing out her cheeks. Probably. You can't exactly /see/ her. ((Don't underestimate the power of Planeptune's one and only goddess!!))

You don't bother to reply, shuddering in horror at how she phrased that. Armok preserve you, you don't know what you'd do if there turned out to be ANOTHER Planeptune goddess running around out there. Knowing everyone's luck, she'd be fifty times worse than Neptune or some shit like that.

Some minutes later, you land heavily on the floating island overlooking Tiff's asteroid, catching your balance as you adjust to the gravitational shift. You're... you're not getting GOOD at jumping around like the goddamned Plumber herself, but you're getting /used/ to it, and that makes a big difference out here.

... and of course, between hitting an inhumanly fast top speed and knowing how to launch herself like some sort of insane cannonball, Doomgirl had no trouble at all navigating these floating islands, so she's been waiting for you for about thirty seconds. She glances up at your approach, pointing down at the asteroid. "You sure our target's still here?"

She's not our /target/, she's- well, whatever. Yes, Tiff is still here, according to Therapist. You double-check just to make sure; it seems like she's gone to ground here, either because she's tired or because she's shaking off-

- a pursuer. Fucking hell.

You see the magic far before you see the adventurer- warp lightning arcs across the asteroid, carving shattered furrows across the rock's pitted surface, followed by the deafening WHUMP of a flamestrike strong enough to make the island /shift/ on its axis. Through the holes in the asteroid, you catch glimpses of an adventurer scrabbling to shift positions; as you watch, she pulls off an impossible midair turn and fires off a smoke-trailing rocket, which... misses its mark and sails off into the void.

"This game is /over/, you... you... contemptible little wretch!"

Welp. Now THAT'S a voice you haven't heard in a while, but there's no mistaking the note of smug superiority in her voice, even when it's buried under a mountain of aggrieved frustration. So you're absolutely not surprised when Myrra crests the far side of the asteroid, floating through the air while wreathed in enough magic to obliterate anything that catches her attention.

Myrra is so going to start summoning Demons.

And then learn why doing so in the presence of Doomgirl is NOT a good idea.

"I will chase you to the end of the void if need be!" Myrra shrieks, the Master of Magic clearly at the end of her rope.

"Shut your pie hole!" Tiff roars back, her voice surprisingly deep. Wisely, she's keeping the hell out of sight, and she's- well, okay, so this IS a good reason for constantly being on the move. You're surprised she isn't completely tuckered out at this point, though. "I'm going to enjoy killing you, you damned bookworm!"

... right. You've faced Myrra before, and she's bad fucking news. The one thing you absolutely NEED to do is get the jump on her, otherwi- oh hell. Where's Doomgirl?

"Ooh, this is it!" the marine roars from where she's standing on the... asteroid. She's on the asteroid? Goddammit. Doomgirl hurtles forward with nothing but her fists, even as Myrra turns to face this new threat. "I'm itching for a fight, baby! Here we go!"

For one long moment, you ignore the sounds of imminent combat and the insistent voice in your head telling you to go save your friends, and you down your primary booze flask in one gulp.

See? It's shit like this that NECESSITATES flasks 2 through 5.

Thanks for participating, guys, and hope to catch you next time!

Bonus scene will...... um, be released when it's finished (hopefully next time). Sorry for the constant delays on that front, guys! Finally came up with an ending that ties it up, now I just have to write it.

Repair them, mostly. From what I understand, DF doesn't have much in the way of sensors, and MC only has what, daylight sensors?

She could mysteriously reinforce the fortress with any scrap metal they find, but actually fortifying would require plonking down her own sentries and such.

I think teleporting in this place is a very bad idea, although dispensers might be useful.
