The land of Aeons, a beautiful land full of mystery, magic and adventure. A place were great heroes are at a constant battle with the forces of evil, great monsters and demons alike. Wizards and Clerics are common place, along with creatures such as ogres and dragons. A land where adventurers travel in search of wealth, fame and power.
Kings and queens, under the protection of these well payed and respected men and woman rule with absolute authority, bringing glory to their allies and death to their enemies. It is truly a wonderful and dangerous place, and to be a adventurer in these times would truly be a life of freedom and prosperity...
At least it would be, if you were stronger...

You are Joe, the Farmer without a farm, who is in search of a new life in the capital city of Aldres, the largest and most prosperous city in the region after his home had been taken from him by the king. On his travels he had decided to take the long route around a fairly ominous forest that had blocked his path, adding an extra day to his travels in which he ran out of food and energy. Finally, after traversing finding his way back on the main road he had discovered a horse and cart being attack by a group of Rat men, and being the brave and brash soul he is, tried to protect it, leaving him with a terribly wounded leg and a new companion. The merchant, in gratitude, offered to take you to the city of Aldres, as he had no were left to go with his cargo destroyed.

It is a few uneventful days of travel with the young merchant, who had on your travels revealed his name to be David Alters. Apparently he was trying to pay back some debts in another town by doing some trading for the local guilds in the city, though with his miserable failure he doubts he should even show his face around there now. You each survive on the little bit of food that was left on the cart and after a few days travel, you finally catch a glimpse of something quite breathtaking for a person who's lived in a small cottage all his life. A large wall, about 30 or more feet tall, going out far and wide across the land, with many men stationed at the top with crossbows and bows. As you make your way down the road, you see a large, red and thick wooden set of doors with what seem to be a group of well armed and well armored guards standing post.
"Huh, there's usually only one or two men at guard there. Seems they've raised the security."
As you slowly make your way closer to the entrance, one of the guards,a large brute of a man with more hair on his face then on your head, holds out a large silver spear to the the two of you.
"Halt! What brings you dirty bunch to this fine city?" The guards look over the cart, seemingly cracking jokes to each. "Probably more stinkin farmers, like we don't got enough shit in this city as it is."
They don't seem to care much for you two.

Your leg, now that you notice it, is not in very good shape. Barely got washed and it seems David's medical know how is not much better then yours. Hurts like all hell and got pretty deep in, but at the least the bleedings stopped. You could stand on it, and maybe limp a bit until it gets looked at.
"Hey, David, show this guy your papers or somethin." David quickly reaches into his boots, pulling out a flattened and slightly blood stained piece of paper, handing it to one of the guards. As he opens and looks over the paper, he looks back at the cart with confusion. "Eh, says here you should be have whole crates of produce an' stuff with you. I just see one, and it looks like you two've been pickin into the stock. How do we know you didn't just take this all,eh?"
"We were attacked, they took everything!" David tries to explain, but the guard smirks and shakes his head.
"Sure, or maybe your the one's that did the attackin, eh? Well, if ya want t'a get in, we might just let ya go by for a good...say,100 gold, eh? If you are a merchant, that should be nothing, right?"

The guard stares at your leg for a moment, scratching his large beard, before suddenly giving it a hard whack with the back of his metal plated hand. You feel a deep surge of pain throughout your entire leg.
David tries to stop him, but the guard simply knocks him to the back of the cart with a swing of his arm.
"Doesn't seem that bad to me. After all, I've seen thieves do some pretty crazy things for a scheme, I remember this one punk who cut off his own thumb. That, and maybe you got just a bit too cocky, eh? Thought you could just waltz right in? Well unlucky for you, the king's just raised security round here, so either you pay up the...hey, Ill give you a break, 50 gold, or Ill have to turn you two in. Sound good?" The guard grins, looking back to the others.

"We can't afford that, c'mon give us a break?"
The guard thinks if over, before grunting and offering 40 gold pieces. "Its the lowest I'll go, and your lucky you got that far."
Going through your sack, you take your 39 and hand him the rest, hoping to finally get this over with. The guard counts out the gold, nods his head for a moment and tosses it back to another guard, who makes the call. Soon the gates swing open wide for you. "Seems well and good. Ah, but before we let you in, how's bout a parting gift to make sure you don't cause any trouble?"
>>
>>43801354
And with that, the guard leans in and swings his fist into your leg again, this time you think it may have started bleeding again. Though it seems he held back, as the pain fades and David quickly gives the horse a hit, as it slowly takes your group past the entrance, and into the city. Looking around, it's a bit...underwhelming, really. The homes that look as if they were once beautiful and well maintained are now broken down and unpleasant, and the people seem to be made up of mainly others that look to be in your situation, bruised, broke and hungry. Farther back, you can see the city seems to get better, though you also notice many more guards in that area then where you are. There seems to be a few taverns, older homes, shops and many, many beggers.
David ties up the horse and your mule to a nearby post, as you two get off. Your leg almost drops you as you stand on it, but you barely manage to stand with David's assistance.

"Get me a fucking doctor, gods fucking dammit!" You curse and mutter under your breath as David assists you, slowly bringing you around, asking where one could find a doctor or a healer of some sort. Every step is awful, and after an excruciating half an hour you finally find a small, rather worn down shack of a home that you were told was home to an old doctor, "Melfrinks or something like that." You were told.
"Hey, sir, my friend needs some healing!" David calls out as he pounds on the front door. After a few minutes, the door slowly swings open, an overweight, middle aged man with large black mutton chops standing behind it, chugging a mug of ale.
"Eh? The hell do you want, I'm..." Looking down to your leg, and with a long, drawn out groan, he turns around and walks back inside, scratching his ass. "Dammit, fine, come in, that looks pretty bad."
Limping inside, you see books, plates, food and trash everywhere. Medical equipment lying next to what seems to be some molding steak on a shelf. Its slightly worrying. Quickly, the man swipes his large hairy arm across a table, tossing everything to the floor.
"Lay on this. It'll be quick."
And so David helps you onto the sticky, wet table, thought it's hard to care with the constant pain.
Suddenly, the man takes a bottle of rum off a shelf and puts it in your hand. "You might want to drink this."
This doesn't seem like it's going to be fun.

----

You wake up, hours later, blood covering the table and floor, David sitting back, seemingly traumatized, and the pain being almost completely gone (though your leg seems to be somewhat more difficult to move.) The doctor, swiping off the sweat from his forehead tosses you what seems to be your sack of gold.
You check it, and it seems 5 gold is missing.
"There, you should be good, but try not to walk on that too much, alright?" Soon, you leave, with only a slight limp. Its rather late.

Taking your hoe, you use it as a sort of cane. It does help, although a bit awkward to use. "We need some sleep." David mentions with a yawn, yourself agreeing with a nod. "Somewhere with some food, if theres any."
David thinks for a moment, before starting to lead you. "I remember there was this cheap inn I used to stay at around here somewhere..."
After a few minutes, you find the place. The Copper Mule it says on the sign in the front. Heading inside it seems rather decent in size, a few rooms and some tables, with a young woman moving all over, delivering plates to a few drunks and old men. "What do ya want" A gravely old woman calls out to you, heading over as she spits out a leaf she was chewing.
"We need some food and sleep."
"You look like you need it" She mentions with a rough, awful laugh. "One gold piece each and you'll get a whole room and meal. Unless your staying together too, I don't judge. Beds are awful small though.
David insists on just getting seperate rooms, though it is your gold.
>Be cheap and spend 1.
>Spend 2 gold.

[David is very grateful]
Soon, the morning comes, and with it the small of a freshly prepared breakfast. In your room, a small table with some food is set up, which you finish off rather quick. As you finish, you start to think of how you should proceed with the day. David joins you after a few.
"Well, that was great, but I'm guessing we're not doing so well in the gold department. Course, we could try to find some work somewhere. I know the local guilds might need somethings done. Theres always help wanted posters set up in the local taverns. We could also just ask around, or people we know. Then again, eh, maybe you think we should do something else?"

"Hey, ya know, that cart o' yours could come in real handy if we need to get any work. Could do some movin', trading." You mention to David.
"Hey, thats right! Heck, we should be able to get alot more work with it, maybe we could check out....mn..anywhere but the merchants guild. I'm sure they wouldn't be happy to see me right now. There is the adventurers guild, rather crap comparing the two, but hey, they have stuff they need too."
You agree, thinking a guild would probably be the most likely place to find well paying, not too dangerous work, so you and David thank the old woman who made your meal, gather your things and head outside. David quickly gets the horse and mule, as you two head in the guild's direction. Luckily, it's rather close, though the building is much less then what you had expected. An older, two story, old wooden building that looks as if its been somewhat fixed up recently. Walking through the front doors you see a large room, filled with drunken and weary looking adventurers young and old. You can spot out at least one mage, you think. The walls lined with wanted posters, help wanted signs and invitations to various events. Walking over to what would seem like a reception desk, you see a young, armor clad woman standing behind it, going through stacks of paper work. Looking up for a moment, she raises her brows in slight interest. "Eh? You don't look like the normal guys we get in here...if you can call most of em' normal. You here to join?"

David seems to be in agreement. "This sounds like it could be a great opportunity."
"Alright, we'll join." You say. You also ask David to do any paperwork, as you can't really read or write too well. "Do you have any jobs that don't really involve fighting? Something with trading could do, we got a cart."
She shrugs her shoulders. "Well, most our jobs are of the fighting kind, but we do have plenty of trading that the Merchants guild doesn't take, and the fact you already have a cart is perfect. Not very much menial work, unless your happy to fix up the wall. Doesn't pay well."

Going downstairs, you take some time to rest and eat, having merry with a few of the other men, spending a few hours with it, before preparing to head out. Your leg seems much better, so long as you don't put too much strain on it. Going out and getting into the cart, David goes upfront, giving the horse a whack on the side. Suddenly, with a jolt, your off. Eustice doesn't seem to mind staying back, as they seem to have left him some food.
As you go along, you look over to David. "Say, what did happen during that surgery, anyways? Ya looked pale."
With being reminded, his face goes a bit cold. "I...am not sure I wish to say. But lets just say there were many things put into that leg that most people would normally avoid touching. Also, I think I heard him say, 'oops, my bad' one too many times."
A slight bit unsettling.
It only takes a good ten to twently minutes to find the doctors home with your cart. As you make your way close, you notice what seems to be a man with a disheveled and slightly scarred face, smacking his fist against the door to the doctors home. "Hey, you owe me for that junk, ya fat fuck, now get me my money!"
The doctor seems to say something, but its hard to hear. It does seem to get the man more riled though.
David looks back to you. "Ah, it doesn't look like we should do this just yet.."

No use to barge in and make enemies without knowing what’s up. Given that this is the only doctor in town, it might be a good idea to help him later, but for now it has nothing to do with us. Even if we scare the guy off he will just come back later.
>>
>>43807266
We can reason with the guy. He's the only doctor in town I doubt he wants to hurt the only guy who can heal him.
>>
>>43807280
He probably doesn’t even want to hurt him. He only wants whatever money he is owed or something like that. If he is angry he might decide to steal or destroy our delivery, though.

There is really no benefit in engaging this person unless he starts breaking down the door.
>>
>>43807312
We're not taking the opposite side, we're just trying to calm him down. What if he loses his temper and kills the guy? These are harsh times.
>>
>>43807326
They are not even in the same room! There is absolutely no risk of him killing the doctor as long as he doesn’t break the door down. And if he does we can still prevent the murder AND he has (probably) clearly enough broken a law that we can take him to the guards.

He shows no sign of wanting to kill the doctor. He is owed money and wants that money, which is perfectly reasonable. And this is nothing we can just "calm down". He won’t magically not care about his money anymore.

Tell me one benefit of engaging this person right now?
>>
>>43807390
We can mediate so that the fighting doesnt even take place in the first place, trying to find and agreeable solution between the 2 parties just so we dont get shat on by having our employer die before we get the money.
>>
>>43807326
I was >>43807246 and yeah, I think the best thing is for Joe just to ask what's going on, not in an aggressive way though. We should keep our distance for now though in case we need to give him the hoe later; we need distance to use it properly.

But for now, let's play it diplomatically.

ALTHOUGH: Mind you, if this doctor owes this guy money, how is he going to pay us 20g for our services (plus whatever else the guild is taking as a cut)? Based on that, I'm guessing either a) the doc is a broke ass who won't pay Joe or b) this guy is some kind of racketeer/extortioner and the doc isn't paying out of principle.

So let's ask what's going on.

"Hey, what are you doing here?" You yell over from the cart.. "Whats that old man done to you?"
"Hey, mind your old business, ya cabbage grower!" He snarls back. "Look, that just doesn't seem right. We'll try to figure things out, alright? Let us talk to him."
The man looks to you, arms crossed, then looks at the cart. "Eh, I see. Yer a delivery boy. Ya know what, fuck it. Go on, try to talk with the fucker. If he can't cough up the gold though, he's gonna have to hear from my boss."
Getting a few things he'd dropped on the floor, he moves away from the door and sits on a log by the house.
Slowly, you move yourself off of the cart, David staying behind to watch the goods. You limp over to the front door, giving it a knock. "Hey, doc, it's me agains. Let me in will ya?"
There isn't a voice, but the door slowly creaks open. As you walk in, it slams back shut, and you see the doctor, sweating, his clothes covered in stains and holding a knife.

See uh, I had payed the guild to get me some supplies, but it's been taking damn near forever, Iv sent the same request about three times now. So uh, I took matters into my own hands, and went out and got some supplies that...one could now, necessarily say are 'legal' or 'safe'. Theres just too many people round here getting all cut up though!"
"Then why the hell aren't you paying him?" You ask, listening.
"Well uh...after I payed the guild, I still had at least, ah, hundred and three pieces, so...I went on a bit of a binge?"
"You...spent all the money on booze?"
"Not..all of it." He says, taking out 35 gold from his pocket. "And some on food..and some furniture. I think. I was ah, hoping for some more income to come in. It's been a slow week."

You groan, thinking over your options. "Alright, then you give him the 35 gold, we'll offer some some of your new...furniture, I guess, and maybe some medicine."
"Eh, you've got it?" The doctor seems to perk up for a moment, then shrug back down. "Well..I guess its fair to give em what I took. They are rats though. Don't deserve shit. But I guess I got to."
The doctor puts the 35 gold in your hands, and you leave the home. The man gets up almost as soon as he sees you. "So, how'd it go? Am I getting my money?"
You take out the sack of gold, much to the man's dismay. "Eh? That doesn't look like a hundred to me."
"Ah, about that, we don't have all of it..but..we can offer some of his valuables..mostly furniture..or some medicine?" You say, pointing to the cart. "I also have a mule. Don't need em' much."
Even with the growing frustration, the last comment makes him laugh. "A fuckin' mule? We give him 100 gold worth of the best stuff we got, all you offer us some chairs and a mule? After a bit of exchanging, the man takes the bag of gold and a small box of medicine, carrying it away, muttering curses under his breath. Slowly the door opens and the doctor looks outside. I'd say just give it a day or two and it'll be good as new." He takes out a hand full of leaves from his pocket, crushing them and putting them onto your wound. "With these, maybe even less then that."
Its not pleasant, but much more so then before.
"Hey, and can ya tell us how to do some basics of patching someone up, uh, just in case?"
The doctor shrugs, taking out a book from the floor and handing it over. "That should have everything ya need. Ya can read, right?"
You look at the book for a moment before shaking your head."Maybe if it had more pictures." However David offers to read up on it, as the doctor says he won't have the time to explain it all. After he wraps your leg up again, you hand him the papers that he happily signs.
Few minutes of putting away boxes later and you're set to head back to the guild. The doctor, gives you a small box of medicine for the road, then see's you off.

---

You arrive at the guild in a good 20 minutes, puting your horse and cart away, handing the paper over to the young woman.
"Eh, that took a bit longer then i'd expected. Come up with some trouble?"
"Just some thug, Joe here handled him easy." David smiles, giving you a pat on the back.
The woman however, seems a bit more concerned. "well, you'd better hope that doesn't come back to bite you. Anyway, heres 25 gold for the whole thing. Good to know you handled that well. We always got more if ya need it."

[Small town asking for food due to low crops, days worth of travel, Average, expected in 5 days]
[Guard outpost needing weapon supplies and armor, weeks worth of travel, difficult, expected in 9 days.]
[Small village in need of medicine, 1-2 days travel, simple, needed in 9 days.]
[Box needed to be moved from Aldres to Lordsrun, 2 weeks trip, King, needed in 10 weeks]
You take some time to know your fellow guild members, have some dinner, enjoy yourself. Most of them seem rather good people, though alot are proud braggarts or thieves. Some of the more well known seem to be Helgard Thesius and Steven Onesly, who are known for working together to take on king level assignments. They are't here currently.
You decide to take the next few days in stride, letting your leg heal and learning the art of basic reading and first aid from David. After about a week you find yourself able to at least read simple sentences and even most of the job papers yourself. As for first aid, you think you could at least stop yourself from dying of blood loss if you had the materials.
You've also come to know many of the other guild members, and how they tend to work together for tougher assignments when needed.
The sun is high in the sky, and you've just had your morning meal. Your gold seems to have not been much affected, though you know the guild would be rather difficult with members that take too long without taking assignments.

"Some supplies please." You ask as you list out what you need.

"We'd also like some weapons and leather armor. Preferably spears or something similar?"
"We've got that and more. Whatever ya want as long as it aint too out of reach." She grins, taking out two large spears and sets of armor. "Oof! Here ya go?"
You thank her, taking the items and going over to one of the men, tossing him 2 gold. You remember him being very knowedged in weapons. "How do I use this without stabbing myself?"
With about a half and hours worth of tips, you feel your able to use it decently at least.
Finally, you set everything in the cart, get dressed and prepped in armor, and are ready to head out. You have at least an extra day to make it there, along with the travel time.

Along with your ID papers and your job papers, you feel your ready to set out. Rechecking everything, David gives the horse a hit on the side as you two start off. "Yeah, lets go!"
You feel a tinge of excitement.

As you make your way to the exit, you see the same guards, staring with glares.
"Paper's?" He asks, as you show him them.
He shrugs and orders you to be let through. "Make sure not to lose everything again, farmer." He says with a grin, as you two leave the walls of the city. Its a rather long ride, as you two take the western road towards your destination. It seems like it'll be a very open path, with just a few trees and animals here and there. A few hours go by, the day starting to grow darker, as you and David carry along.
"Well, this is nice, I suppose." David mentions with a yawn. "Eh. I think I see something down the road. Looks like theres a river going through, a bridge, still no homes...eh, someone there?" You squint your eyes, trying to see them in the growing dark.

You look closer. Is it another rat? Bandits? You quickly give David a signal, as you get out of the cart and prepare your weapon and your Ass. 'Eustice'. The person only seems to notice you just then, as it slowly takes a step foreward. Then as it comes closer, you think you may recognize the creature from a picture book you had as a kid. It seems to look like some sort of hyena or jackal walking on its hind legs, holding a small axe, and drooling at the mouth, standing at a man's height. A Gnoll, you think you remember it was called.

The Gnoll, keeping its eye on your both, licks its lips and readies its axe. Suddenly, you bolt in, catching the Gnolls attention. Keeping your spear at the ready, the Gnoll rushes in, turning its back to David, as he goes in for an attack.

In a rush of anger and with a battle cry, you rush in, stabbing your spear into the creatures chest, driving it through. It cries out in pain as it drops its axe to the ground. Looking down to its chest, blood dripping from its mouth as David lifts himself, grabbing the spear with his one good arm, thrusting it foreward to finish the Gnoll.

>>

And once again, he barely hits the creature, as it struggles and shakes with the spear in his chest, though slowly it seems to fall limp as its blood drains away, letting it fall limp to the ground. David, holding his arm, gives a thumbs up with his one good arm. "That went better then I'd imagined."
Looking around, you find nothing much but a good 6 gold and the Gnoll's ax. You do find a few scattered bones where the Gnoll had been standing, though nothing on them.
Going to David, you take out some of the medicine from the box you were given and put it onto the wound. It didn't get deep, so it should be fine. You wrap up the wound, and help David up. At his point, the sun has gone down and the only thing of interest that you can see is the river and bridge. Before heading onto the cart, you chop off the creatures head with its own ax/your hoe. David offers a sack to put it in. He seems a bit disturbed, but understands.

You look over the area for a moment. "I think we should try to find wherever that Gnoll lived. It probably wouldn't wander too far from its home."
David agrees, as you each take a weapon in hand, making sure the cart is safe. After a fair amount of searching, you think you find it. A bit farther down the river there seems to be a dugout, going completely under ground. It seems to go a fair bit far down. You turn over to David and give him a nudge. "Hey, you know if Gnolls usually travel in groups?"
David scratches his head. "I think I heard something about that, yeah. Cause they're not very brave creatures."
"Then why was that one alone?" You ask.
"Well.." And just as David is about to finish, you hear something of a loud laughing coming from behind you. Looking back, behind a small few trees, you see about three pairs of glowing yellow eyes in the darkness.
"Well, now we know."

You take out the Gnolls head, still fresh, and hold it out to the others. For a moment, it seems to keep them back, as you slowly inch your way towards the cart. You manage to make it, only about 10 feet away, before you see the creatures start to rush foreward, the cackling even louder now. You have your weapons ready, but David is still hardly able to hold it up. Quickly, you turn and rush forewards, scrambling into the cart as David gets to the front, tossing his spear in the back and giving his horse a hard kick on the side. Suddenly, it lifts and neighs, starting off. However, it seems the Gnolls were right on you, and as you make off, they attempt to get into your cart with you.

However they trip and stumble, letting you ride off with ease, the cackling dying down as you ride over the bridge and away.
"That..was kind of exciting. Sure, we couldn've gotten killed, but wow!" David laughs, laying back, just a bit as you ride down the road. Its about a few hours past midnight, as you come across a small cabin off the side of the road. Slowing down, it seems to be abandoned, with the roof mostly missing and the inside stripped clean.Your only about a days travel from the village now.

You scan over the area. There doesn't seem to be anything to be worried about. No areas for anything to really be hiding, it seems safe enough to rest. As you enter, you set up a small meal, prepare the bed rolls, hide away Eustice and the Horse and cart. You lay down, looking to the sky with David. Slowly, you each drift off to sleep, as you talk about the past few weeks, and everythings thats happened. No more onions for dinner, no more living off of nothin.
And so ends this part of Joe the Farmer's quest.

Wow this went for quite a while, pretty tired.
