Thousands of years ago, humanity disappeared, leaving behind a shattered empire. The remnants of their legacy are now divided between the Uplifts: five genetically enhanced species created by their human forefathers. This is Heritage.

The air is hot and dry in the saloon, laden down with incense, cigarette smoke, and the body odor of a galaxy's worth of travelers. What little sunlight sneaks in through cracks in the plaster is quickly spirited away by the heady atmosphere, hazy neon lights above the bar a pallid substitute. You check your cracked wrist comp; six minutes late, not a good sign for a potential new crewmember.

A resigned sigh escapes, you were little different when you were younger. Still are little different. You look down at the last sips of the lustrous black whiskey in your cup; staring back at you is:

>the catlike face of a Felinid. You're fiercely independent and proud, everything you do is motivated by the desire for prestige.

>a powerful Canid jawline. Your loyalty and strength is renowned, in this case to your ship and crew rather than House and King.

>a set of intelligent, Corvid eyes. The only thing stronger than your curiosity and drive for innovation is your sense of right and wrong.

>the ponderous, rubbery face of a Cetacean. You may have broken free of the endless red-tape of your homeworlds, but have you truly left ideas of bureaucracy behind?

>the faceplate of a Cephalapod exosuit. You have left the cold ways of the Alliance behind, but many still view your kind with suspicion.

The faceplate of a Ceph exosuit looks back at you, luminescent green eyes dancing with each little ripple. Life can be hard for a Ceph living outside the Alliance, but thinking back, every struggle has been worth it.

You knock the dregs back, brief reverie washed away by stinging liquor as it flows through the nutrient filter of your helmet. You check the wrist comp again. Seven minutes late. You start to haul yourself out of the dirty booth when something out of place snags at the corner of your vision.

A Corvid dressed up in a sharp looking travel outfit awkwardly picks its way through the crowded saloon, drawing irritated and bemused looks from many.

"Captain Solomon?" it half-squawks in accented Prime, "Captain stay there, I'll be right there!" as it hastens in your direction. You lower yourself back onto the bench, not sure whether to be annoyed or embarrassed.

After a few moments, it slides into the booth, sitting across from you.

"I'm here for the crew opening, engineer?" it says a bit too loudly, "sorry I'm a minute late."

Studying it's face for a moment, you would surmise it's a female of her species, though you can never seem to be sure with warmbloods. All of a sudden you wish you still had a drink.

"Seven minutes, actually," comes your crackling voice through the mouthgrille, "not a great first impression. Especially considering this is a job interview."

The Corvid squirms sheepishly in her seat.

"Anyways. We're short an engineer, so I guess we can't be Cetacean about timing. Let me review your qualifications again, quickly..."

'If I had to wait,' you think, 'so can she.'

You tap a few times on your wrist comp, bringing up her resume.

>MARA TINELLA

>GRADUATED NOVA PONTUS UNIVERSITY, UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE IN FUSION ENGINEERING

>DECKHAND ON VENATOR CRUISER 'NOBLE DENDRITE"
>REASON FOR LEAVING: RECOMMENDATION

>ENGINEER ON VENATOR CRUISER 'GLADIUS VISION'

You rest your "forearm" back on the table, looking back towards the Corvid.

"Mara, correct?" she nods with an expression you can't quite parse between being terror or excitement, "your resume is impressive, especially considering you managed to get onto a Venator ship with only a bachelor's degree. Though, I'd wouldn't be much of an employer if I didn't ask: how did you get fired?"

She laughs, this time you're sure it's nervously, and clears her throat.

"Well, that's a simple misunderstanding you must see. I had... incorrect expectations of the captain, as to what he meant by demanding 'maximum possible output.'"

She stops as if finished, until your intense green stare prompts her to continue.

"Hrm. Yes. Doing my duty as any good engineer should, I set about optimizing the fusion engine systems. Notably, implementing a new direct power throughput model proposed in a research paper I had read. It boosted the ships maximum speed by nearly thirty two percent! Until... well... until it failed."

"You got canned for a system failure? That seems extreme, even for Venators."

"No, I think you misunderstood. What failed was the containment shield around the primary conduit. It exploded, I mean to say."

'Why aren't I surprised?' you think, desperately scanning for a nearby waiter.

"Well, that'll do it."

"It's not like anyone died or anything!" she quickly interjects, "we were even close enough to friendly port that we could crawl back on sublights. No harm no foul, right?"

You almost laugh.

"It's hardly no foul if you blew up a fusion reactor!"

She opens her beak to rebuff you, but closes it again wordlessly, settling back into her seat.

"Look Mara, times are tough and a ship without an engineer is like a Canid without legs,..."

"-so let me get a hold of my first mate and see what he says. If you're on my ship, I want to be clear: no "upgrades" without my explicit permission, understand?"

She nods as your prosthetic fingers clack at the comp screen, dialing the ship. The screen goes black for a moment, accompanied by a beeping call tone. An image of your ship jumps on screen, with a green icon, "CONNECTED" in the top right.

"W'sup cap?" comes the familiar voice of your first mate and pilot, "aren't you supposed to be interviewing some poor schmuck? Pretty rude cap, pretty rude."

"I'm with her right now Deg, thought I'd get a second opinion on her credentials before making the call."

"Since when do you ask for my advice?"

Sometimes, you wonder how you wound up with the Felinid lunatic. You sigh, and continue.

"She made some unsanctioned upgrades to the reactor on her last ship, ended about how well you think it would."

Degivilas laughs, "cap, considering all the kleesh we get into on the road, I'm not sure a zapped reactor would even be a bad thing. We need an eng or we're not gonna go much of anywhere."

You tap the red icon on the left of the screen, hanging up on him. Alliance life barely seems bad compared to this.

"Well, it looks like you're hired."

The Corvid lights up, breathing a huge sigh of relief. She extends a talon to shake your hand, vigorous with excitement.

"I won't let you down, I promise!" she squawks. You'll have to get used to her arrestingly shrill Prime before you stop cringing a little at every new word.

"Ship's in docking bay 466b, head over there quick as you can. We're jetting before nightfall if everything goes smoothly."

She slides out of the booth and quickly starts shuffling towards the exit on her long wings, stumbling over gratitude after gratitude as she does so. Shaking your head, you throw a small pile of Cetacean dollars onto the table and haul your heavy, armored frame to its feet. No matter how long you've been wearing the exosuit, walking about on two feet always feels a bit wrong, for lack of a better word. At least you get less dirty looks this way.

You lumber out of the saloon and into the bright and sunny streets of Constantinople. You look up towards the towards the shining Tower Citadel with hand-shielded eyes; the Last Light of Mankind never ceases to amaze you. Picking your way upwards, the lower levels of plaster and brick give way to the unaging silvery metal that makes human relics so easily identifiable. Outside the Bounties and Comissions Office, you read the job postings board:

>Wanted: Azuolas the Coin, sixty thousand Republic Sestercii, for piracy, blackmail and murder.

>Ship needed for transportation of delicate cargo to Algernon V, Cetacean space. Ten thousand Cetacean dollars.

>Alternatively, you did hear about that possible relic sighting out in the northern Corvid colonies.

"Could make three times that if the relic lead pans out..." you mutter to yourself, already making for the docking bay. It's about a half an hour's walk through the busy streets before you reach it: Constantinople Spaceport.

Ships of every stripe and allegiance are packed tightly into a labrynth of interlocking parking spaces: from patchwork looking Felinid merchants to proud Canid battle yachts, just about every sort you can imagine can be seen. You make your way along the lighted path, weaving between towers of containers, travellers, and craft, until a towering Canid blocks your path. Attempts at politely sidestepping him are blocked in turn by his wide frame.

"I don't know how you Alliance scum are allowed on Constantinople, after what you did at the Xarxes Drift," he growls at you, "if you were in Kingdom space I'd spit you without a second thought."

He sneers at you and spits on the ground, "hell, I don't see any Port Authority around, do you?" he asks to someone behind you.

Looking over your shoulder, a second Canid stands with arms folded, a shitty grin plastered across his pointed mug.

"Sure don't Stephan, I sure don't."

You swivel your head back around to the sound of metal sliding against metal, the all too familiar herald of a blade being drawn.

"Don't bring a knife to a gunfight, 'specially one you pick!" you shout, drawing your gun. It kicks in your hand twice just as the Canid winds up with his sabre. The slugs slam into his chest, sending him sprawling backwards into a pile of crates. The second Canid's blade clatters to the ground as he rushes over to his wounded companion.

"Fucking Alliance bastard!" he shouts at you, clutching hands over the rapidly bleeding wounds.

You consider correcting him, but the approach of sirens changes quickly changes your mind. You dart off between the packed ships, alloyed "feet" pounding hard towards your docking bay.

The familiar ringtone of your wrist comp blares in your ear, and you slap at the "pick up" icon without looking.

"What!" you shout between deep breaths.

"Heard some sirens cap, now what are the odds that was your doing? I don't wanna use my beer money for bail money again," comes Deg's familiar sarcastic tone through the earpiece.

"Just get the damn gangplank down, 'manity alive!" you growl into the microphone.

You come skidding to a halt when you see your ship, an older model Freewheeler-class light freighter, the hull a confusing mess due to Deg's incessant "customizing." The gangplank is lowered, and you see Degivilas standing at the top of it.

"What's the play cap?" he shouts to you.

"Get us out of here!" you shout, "unles you want to get in a shootout!"

The Felinid skips his usual buffoonery and quickly darts back into the ship. As your shod legs clatter onto the gangplank, the sublight thrusters flare blue, kicking up dust all around. The gangplank begins to fold b ack up into the ship, just as a group of Canids bearing the same, unfamiliar house iconography as the one you left bleeding in the dirt, come rounding the corner. They open fire on the ship, small arms dinging uselessly against the hull. You pop off a few shots in their direction just before the gangplank fully closes.

You blink, and take in the familiar surroundings of your ship: simple, rust-brown walls adorned with a handful of holographic frames, animated images dancing with colour. The same "CARGOBAY" in neon lights over a pair of heavy doubledoors, the B still burnt out. The floor jumps below you, and you feel your world lurching forwards as the ship blasts out of the Spaceport at top speed.

Holding onto the handrails, you drag your way up to the cockpit where you fling yourself into a chair. Jangly and foreign sounding Felinid dance-pop blares over the speakers, and you see Degivilas nodding his head furiously, eyes closed.

"Do we have a tail?" you're forced to shout over the din.

"Not yet!" he grins, "at least, nothing that can catch us!"

"You better damn well hope so!"

You look out the viewport and see the sweeping deserts of Constantinople already disapearring behind you as your break into outer orbit.

Deg turns a knob and the music quiets to a more manageable volume, "do we have a heading cap? I know I said we don't have a tail, but if we sit around for long enough, something might eventually catch up. Eventually being the operator."

"Yes," you nod, recalling your information on the lead, "head us towards..."

"Aye aye captain, Cetacean mining operation it is!"

With gravity restored to a semblance of normality, you climb out of the chair and head out of the cockpit. Before the door even closes, the music begins blaring again, this time accompanied by the bizarre yowling mewl that passes for singing amongst Deg's race.

Turning around, your heavy metal frame collides with Mara, whom you'd almost forgotten about in the hubbub, sending the Corvid sprawling to the floor.

"Sorry Captain Solomon, so sorry," she yelps.

You extend a tentacle, helping her up.

"Don't worry about it, I didn't see you," you assure her. "I trust Degivilas wasn't too grating getting you settled in? As you can probably tell, he can be a touch abrasive."

Dusting off her futuristic flight suit, she replies, "no captain, not unduly."

You are certain she's lying, but you decide to let it lie for now.

"Well, engine section is through that door, the one marked 'engine room,'" you gesture down the hallway, "try not to blow anything up."

You leave her stammering and saluting as you lumber back down the hall. The door to your quarters hisses open at the touch of a button, the indescribable relief of weightlessness lifting your body the moment you step over the threshold. With a quick set of commands on your wrist comp, the restrictive exo suit peels itself from your soft flesh, and for the first time in what seems like ages you float freely in your natural state.

'I wouldn't even mind the thugs shooting at me for being "Alliance" if I didn't have to wear that damn thing all the time,' you think as you orient yourself towards the captain's terminal. You swiftly enter the password, which is simply the ship's name.

Your tentacles type out:

Well guys, I think with that, I'm going to call it a night, my eyes are getting sore from looking at this tiny ass screen.

Our hero, Captain Solomon, his annoying first mate Degivilas, and new engineer Mara have set off on a fantastic adventure to the Spin Ends in their trusty ship the Hot Needle of Inquiry. What will happen next on HERITAGE SHIP QUEST?

Follow @Heritage_Quest for updates on when the next thread will be. At least, I think that's the right twitter name, twitter was being shittier than usual when I set it up.
