Welcome to The Lost Island Quest. Last thread our hero, Alan Rodain, defended the settlement of Seaside from giant, fire-breathing beetles. After some tension over monetary payment in his group, Alan met a kindly priest by the name of Father Calloway who rekindled his faith after giving him the power to heal the wounded. Doubt in his new found path began to set in as Alan met with Gilda, the head researcher in Seaside. After conversing with Dolah, his self-appointed guide, and Blackburn about the conflict between his duty as a soldier and his religious concerns, he still holds concerns that he'll fail to live up to the standards of The Great Will. Now, he heads to his hostel to sleep in preparation for the next day's excursion.
>>
Well, here you are now.

Sitting on your bed.

Gabby and Dolah are yelling at each other. Again.

Eve and Quissonce are playing cards and Rowe has already gone to sleep. You don't know where Kyra is. Most of the other people are slowly backing away from the two large women arguing, even the guy who is the subject of their argument. You feel bad for him.

“Because I fucking want it. And what's he gonna do about it?”

“You can switch beds with me if it is that important to you.”

“Your bed isn't as nice as his bed. I want his bed.”

“He found it first.”

“Yeah, and the fucking savages on this island found it first. But we need it more. I need a good night's rest more than this sheepfucker.”

“You're not taking this man's bed without a fight. Do you want to sleep with bruises or without?”

Quissonce and Eve look up at this last part. They seem bored and maybe this will prove to be an entertaining distraction.

You get up and walk over to the poor guy, tapping him on the shoulder.

“Would you like my bed, sir? I'm sorry about all this.” He nods his head and scrambles away from Gabby and Dolah. Dolah rolls her eyes.

“Are you happy now?”

“Ecstatic. Have fun sleeping in that crapheap, Al.” She falls back on the man's bed and starts to pull the covers over herself. Dolah gives you an apologetic look, before she storms back to her own sleeping arrangements. The man curls himself up in your bed. Eve and Quissonce deal him in on their card game.

You walk over to where Gabby's was sleeping. You soon spot her bed, the only free one. It is pretty terrible. You understand why, with her temperament, she was set off. It smells. The blankets are filled with wholes. There are stains on the sheets and pillows. This would be hard for anyone to stomach.

You're not going to get any sleep on this thing. And you aren't in the sleeping mood. Your head is too full of thoughts to relax. Maybe a nice walk in the dark will get you out of your mind.

You head outside and begin to stalk the city streets. There are plenty of city guards patrolling with lanterns, making sure nothing sneaks over the walls in the dead of night most like. You decide to practice some of your sneaking skills. Gives you something to focus on. You pretend it's a life or death situation if one of the guards spots you and move about the city, finding nooks and crannies. You study the side streets and eventually find a good flow. A guard here or there sees you, but they seem to know your face by now to realize who you are. Seems your antics in the streets today earned your group some recognition from the constabulary.

You don't know why you think to sneak out, but something draws you to a grove in the middle of Seaside. It is a small oasis of greenery and nature in the man-made settlement. You glide in, looking for . . . something. And you quickly notice that you are not alone. Someone is already in the grove, moving. You feel their vibrations almost. You quiet your own movements and quietly peek in.

You see Kyra. Dancing. By herself, in her full gear. She doesn't seem to have spotted you. Guess she's practicing. You don't know much about dancing, but from what you see you must say she seems pretty good. It looks to be ballet or something similar to it, with all the twirls and plies.

Well, this was interesting enough. Your head feels a bit clearer and you saw somebody perform. You aren't anywhere closer to having answers to some of your more serious questions, but you feel like you can finally go to sleep.

And that starts with you buying yourself some goddamned bedding. You sneak back out of the grove and find the nearest guardsmen. All the shops are closed this time of night, but you ask if you can purchase any extra surplus from them. The one you ask directs you to the quartermaster and you pick up a bedroll for a silver. And you toss in a couple more for some pillows and a nice blanket. You return to your hostel and throw all that gross material on the ground and set yourself up in something livable.

When your head finally hits the pillow, sleep overtakes you quickly and you let this eventful day end.

“Alan.” Ugh, what?

“Alan.” Someone's whispering your name.

“Alan.” You finally open your eyes. You see Dolah, she's fully dressed. You still feel tired.

“Alan, I'm going to Father Calloway's chapel to pray for our journey. Do you want to join me?” You look out a window. It can't be much later than six or seven in the morning. Could be as early as 5.

You might as well. You're up, getting back to sleep will be hard as it is. Dolah walks outside as you get out of bed and put on your gear. You rub the sleep out of your eyes and yawn before standing up and grabbing your equipment. You meet her outside and start your walk to Father Calloway's in silence. The fresh air wakes you up a bit and you start to enjoy the day. It's relatively peaceful and the sun is shining bright. And you'll get to enjoy the beauty of the wilderness soon.

You make it into Father Calloway's chapel. The place feels warm to you, although you can't pinpoint where the source of the heat is. There are about fifteen other parishioners gathered in the chapel this early in the morning, all sitting in the pews with their heads bowed. Father Calloway, dressed in his official priest's frock greets you and Dolah cordially before going back to the front of his altar to silently read out of one of his texts.

The two of you sit next to each other and Dolah puts her hands together and looks down. You guess its begun. You try to settle into your communion with The Great Will. It feels a bit silly, talking to some higher power. You haven't truly done this in a long while. You close your eyes and wait, really. You feel yourself almost nodding off at points but manage to rouse yourself back to the realm of the waking. Which, considering the silence and the soft sounds of running water coming from the fountain, is hard to distinguish from the realm of the sleeping.

We're a soldier and we're supposed to do whatever it takes to secure this island for the Republic.

The tenets means no ambushes, no sneak attacks, and means we always have to fight openly and with plenty of warning.
Not to mention, capturing any of the sapient inhabitants for study would be against the tenets.
>>
OK, well if you're going this far you might as well commit all the way. The first things you pray for come easy. You pray for good weather. That's a classic. You pray for the safety of your group and your attending crew for the duration of this expedition.

You pray for strength. The strength to protect those around you.

You pray for ingenuity. The smarts and the clear-sightedness to find a solution to your problems and the problems of others.

You pray for forgiveness forgiveness. That's a big one. Not for what you've done. No, you aren't gullible enough to believe that can be washed away with two days penance. Forgiveness for losing your faith in the first place. For it taking such a monumental discovery to find it again.

You pray for guidance so that you stay on this path you've begun to walk. There will be many pitfalls and you need to always find comfort in The Great Will's light.

You get so wrapped up in it you must have lost track of time. Dolah taps you on the shoulder and motions for you to leave. You follow her out of Father Calloway's chapel towards the front gate of Seaside where your group was to gather. (1/2)

I'll bet you five dollars that Dolah does not agree with what you just said. When the chips are down I bet she'll be okay with using advantages as long as we aren't murdering children.

The rest of your group is fitting themselves for the journey. All of them have horses which they are strapping their equipment, food and bedrolls to. Gilda greets you as you see her attach bird cages and quills to her own pack horse. Blackburn is there with a contingent of guardsmen, overseeing your departure. Seems only your group and Gilda are leaving, you don't see any assistants or other riders. That seems odd. You bring this up to Blackburn.

“We find that the smaller we keep our excursions the less likely we are to attract unwanted attention. Essential personnel only.” Which makes it just you seven and Gilda. “The ruin is only two days ride from here, so we gave you enough to last a week. By the way, we weren't sure what type of horse you preferred. Seeing as you were in the cavalry I figured you'd have a strong preference for either a light scout or a heavy charger. Both Dolah and Father Calloway said that we would need to seek atonement and forgiveness for the actions that we took as a soldier earlier in our career.
So sneak attacks and ambushes are out. And having someone else do such things in our stead doesn't keep our hands completely clean.

>>43878911
Scout is for open plains and other more open areas, heavy charger is for rough terrain, carry more stuf it's a stronger horse but lest maneuverable steed.

“I'll take the Heavy Charger.” Blackburn signals to one of his men and they bring out the horse. He's a beauty. A big black monster. The type of horse meant for breaking battle lines. It'll be nice to get back on the horse. And you get him for a whole week.

“Keep it.” You look at Blackburn like he's crazy. This horse is worth hundreds of gold at the least, if he's actually as good as you think he might be, maybe hitting over a thousand. He shrugs.

“Someone's got to use him. And if your military records are true than the best option is to let you use have him. Be warned though, I don't have any replacements. None of that caliber, anyway. Be careful.”

You will. You come up to the big guy and get him to trust you easily enough. You were afraid Blackburn might have given you an ill-tempered horse to test you or something weird. You saddle him up, get the bridles and the armor on him. You start packing up your gear, like your bedroll, the food they've given you, torches and other basic amenities to staying out in the field. You strap your lance in and place your cavalry saber at your hip. Your hide armor is secured and your shield's at your back. You make sure your throwing darts are placed in easy reach. You'll leave your long sword behind for this journey. Or maybe sell it?

Your gang gathers and Blackburn wishes you well. Gilda looks filled with glee at the prospect of what you're doing and already has a small black book out and a quill at the ready. Rowe takes the lead with her horse and soon you're out the gates of Seaside, which close quite quickly after you've cleared it. And the journey begins. The trees, the grass and the small, dirt path seem normal enough. Nothing extremely foreign. You quickly settle into a comfortable pace and quiet descends on the group.

You pull your horse up to Dolah's. She rides a white, handsome steed. She calls him Mastema. After you've been assured by Rowe that it's safe to speak, you begin to ask Dolah some of your more specific queries.

“What is The Great Will's stance on sneak attacks or ambushes? Must I warn my enemy before I fight them?”

“Would warning them you're going to attack them stop them, in this hypothetical situation?”

“No.”

“Then no warning need be granted if they've proven themselves to be vile curs deserving of defeat.”

“What about setting fire to an enemy encampment. While they sleep?” Dolah pauses at this.

“Death by fire is one of the more gruesome ones. I'd understand hesitation. But if your enemy seeks to rape, pillage and murder innocents or the just, then better cleansed by fire than allowed to live on in ignorance.” That was rather harsh. She laughs as she notices your grim countenance.

“The Great Will holds love and mercy for all his creations. But he also believes in proper judgment. While execution is always looked upon as less preferable to capturing and jailing your opponents, sometimes those aren't your options. Showing mercy to a deserting soldier is showing harshness to the village woman he ends up slaying and raping.”

“But, how am I supposed to know? What if that man instead of doing something wrong would turn his life around?”

“Before I arrived here, I'd tell you that you must act with your best judgment and if you chose wrong, pray to The Great Will to forgive your ignorance and alleviate it with wisdom in the future. For if you acted with good intentions, than he can only blame your mind, not your soul. But now, I'd tell you to point him out to me. I'll know if he deserves leniency or not.” As she says this you see her glance over at Gabby, who's riding ahead of the two of you, eating an apple.f

You told them you felt guilty about killing fleeing soldiers and burning their camps, because you do. They were telling you if you were guilty, you can still be forgiven. It was a slightly vague question I reworded with a slightly vague answer. Long story short, if you killed fleeing soldiers who didn't deserve it, you can be forgiven.
>>
"These natives, this island is their home. When they are defending their homeland, I find it hard to believe that they would stop. Does the Great Will see everyone equally, without regard to race?"

“Without regard to race? Yes. Equally? No. Those who live just lives and worship The Great Will are considered with the most of his affection. That is why he grants us these powers. Those who live just lives and do not worship The Great Will are loved, but it is the duty of those who worship him to inform them of his power and if they lack awareness of him, his existence. Then there are those who live unjust lives and do not worship The Great Will. They are considered a threat to the security of the rest of his creations and thankfully, are in the minority. The least regarded by His Power are those who Worship The Great Will, but live unjust lives. They are vultures, parasites and apostates. They can be redeemed, but their eradication is the most welcomed of all violence. If these natives are proven to be as vile as Blackburn claims, we will defeat them, but spare those too young or too infirm to attack us. If these natives are proven to be innocent and Blackburn is the tyrant, it is our duty to return here and stop him.” Did she really just say that last part out loud. That's practically treason. You look around and nobody seems to have heard her or maybe they just don't care. Gilda is currently sketching an odd-looking bird with a wide beak. Well, Blackburn did say he would like to make peace with the natives. Maybe you could try to speak with them. You'll need to learn Orcish first, however. It feels a little racist to ask, but . . .

“Dolah, do you speak Orcish?”

“Yes, I learned the tongue when I was a young child.” Oh, that's good! (1/2)

I always find it funny that the term racist is used when it should be speciest. But then again you can have true breeding half orcs/elves/whatever so classical definitions of species get overturned, though there's probably enough genetic difference for it be be about species than just different subspecies. Kind of off topic but as someone who takes an interest in biology the nomenclature we use for many things is kinda funny. Then again I get what a person means with the word racist and it gets the point across enough you would have to be real prissy to correct them in casual conversation.

Considering the backstory you gave us of Alan running down and killing routed soldiers, I thought it was clear that the question was if we do those sorts of things again, if they would be against the new tenets we're supposed to uphold.
Because the question was since we did those things before, would doing them again be against the tenets.

You decide to talk to Gabby next, and spur your horse to move up next to her. She's just finished eating her apple and tosses the core away as you pull up.

“Hey there Al, finally bored of the orc's preaching?” She seems to be in a pleasant mood. “Seriously, I have to ask. The fuck happened? Yesterday you were telling that sanctimonious bitch off. I let you get out of my sight for an hour or two and suddenly you're infected.”

“I met a priest who was able to heal grievous wounds with the power of his faith. It, awoke something that had been laying dormant inside me for some time now.”

“Speaking of dormant, where the fuck did you learn to fight like that. One second you were practically bumbling about waiting for me to end you, the next you actually knocked me on my ass.” She looks like she is simultaneously offended and impressed.

“Like I said, I can pick up other people's abilities fairly quickly with a minor amount of study.”

“More like no study. I didn't exactly give you pointers on how to hit me. Well, if you've actually retained any of that shit I 'taught' you, I need a sparring partner. Only other person here who'd put up a challenge would be the orc and you I can actually drink with.” Her smile falters a bit as she says this last part.

If they are evil we can do black ops.

“Seeing as how I can not lie – of-fucking-course I still can.” Gabby laughs. She mock prayers with her hands, eyes towards the sky.

“Thank you non-existent God for not saddling me with two Dolahs.”

Rowe suddenly sharply whistles and throws her hand in the air in the Cerilian symbol for halt. While the others may not know the symbol, they seem to pick up on Rowe's intentions quickly and stop their horses. You've been traveling through generally open plains and the few times you've gone through a patch of forest in your off-road travels, you've been absolutely silent. As you look around you see in the distance a fallen tree large enough to hide ambushers and enough greenery and rocks on the periphery for a couple more to hide. Rowe looks around a bit before inching forward a bit with her horse, still motioning for the rest of you to remain still. She looks over at you and nods that you should come forward. You pull up to her at the front.

“There's somebody there, I can sense it.”

“Hostile?”

“Probably. We should avoid this area, find a detour.”

Gilda, who must have been eavesdropping rides up to the two of you at this point.

“Well, I hate to be a bother, but taking some of them alive could potentially be wonderfully helpful to me. So if we could, ahem, handle them I'd be most willing to reward you.” Rowe and you exchange a look. She shrugs.

“They've seen us. We could rush them hard and fast right now. Or we could make like we're setting up camp and have a couple people move around and ambush them. Either way could work.”

“Alright, let's do the ambush.” Rowe nods and then gather the rest of the group. You explain what's going on and then quickly go about setting up camp in the area, doing what you would be doing in an hour or two from now if this hadn't happened. You start setting up the tents – only 4, hmm. Well you had to pack light and you can easily fit two to a tent. Whatever. Quissonce casts a spell on you that she says will allow you to communicate with their side once you're in position. As you gather kindling, Rowe feigns that you, her, Gabby and Kyra should go hunting. Eve makes a remark about the humans abandoning the rest of you, to which Rowe rolls her eyes. The four of you head back west only to circle around to the North-east and then move through the forest to spot whoever was planning to hit you.

You guide your horses, who Rowe is able to keep silent and stealth through, Rowe leading the way. Rowe decides to move up into the trees when you near the tree line to have a good shot with her bow if you decide to attack. You watch her climb up and thankfully are able to focus on how she climbs rather than her rear. You think you've picked up some basics and could mimic it if you needed to.

As you finally make it to the tree line, taking extra care to make sure your warhorse doesn't do something loud, you are able to get a good look at the people who are planning to attack you. Although, you're not entirely sure if people is the right word to describe these creatures. They're small, bipedal lizard creatures. You see six of them hiding behind that log. They're armed with slings. You notice four more in the bushes and grasses surrounding that log, these ones armed with crude-looking bows. And you see five armed with spears hiding behind a small assortment of rocks. Seems like they're staying relatively still. Waiting for nightfall, perhaps to hit your camp? Kyra looks over to you after she scans their set-up.

>Any plans?
>>
>>43882420
We'll hit the ones with bows and roll them up into the ones with slings. Rowe, Gabby, and Kyra hit the ones with spears when they try to get into position to stop us.

Since we're on a strong charger, keep on the move. Use the lance for the first charge, then switch to our saber since we probably won't be able to use our lance once we're stuck in closer quarters.

You whisper to your teammates around you.

“Rowe, aim for the ones with the bows first. Then target the slingers. Gabby, Kyra, focus on the spearmen once they come out into formation. I'll charge the ones using ranged weapons.” You relay the positioning and your plan to Quissonce's side. It feels weird, whispering to her when she is hundreds of feet away and hearing her respond. You, Gabby and Kyra get on your horses and prepare yourselves. You keep in contact with Quissonce's side. You wait on Rowe's signal. Which is to drop one of the bowmen.

You hear her loose and see the arrow arc and skewer the sole look-out hiding in a tree. As he drops to the floor and startles his buddies, you tell Quissonce to go as your side moves out. The things notice your side bursting from the trees and begin to try to move themselves out of the way. As the spear-men come up, Gabby jumps off her horse and practically bowls into them, picking one up and slamming him into the ground. Another archer falls from an arrow coming from the trees. A couple of the slingers chuck rocks at you, but you're able to duck your head in time to avoid them. Dolah and the casters have finally reached where the rest of you are and begin attacking. Quissonce seems to be firing some odd bits of magical energy that seem to be effective. You notice Eve come up on one and blast it with a burst of fire coming from her hands. Dolah smacks one over the head with her hammer, splattering its brains over the grass. You hear her shout.

“Its ok! They're not good people.” Well, with their sentience assured but their purity denounced, you feel okay to really let loose. You're able to skewer two of them at once with your lance before losing momentum and having to turn your horse around. You charge at a third, pulling out your saber and slashing at its neck. As it drops, you turn your sights on a fourth and begin to charge it. It drops its sling, the only defense it had. This will be quick.
>>
As you swing, it ducks your sword and you see its tail lash out. Only too late do you notice some weird sharply curved piece of metal attached to it. It slashes at the leg of your horse, making a deep gash and you its scream of pain is earth-shattering as it stumbles.

Your horse falls and only by luck do you manage to avoid being crushed by the thing as you too fall from your saddle. You quickly get up and bring your sword to bear as the creature comes at you, with a dagger now. You parry the thing's attacks as your horse struggles to get back up. Before you manage to get a good swing in at the thing, Kyra approaches it from behind and smacks it over the head with a small blackjack. You look around to survey the rest of the damage. Of the fifteen of them, ten are dead. Two more have surrendered. And besides this one, two of the ones Gabby has been pummeling don't seem to be dead yet. No casualties on your side. Except . . .

You look over at your horse. Its limping. That's really bad. You got this horse today. You even named him! He's not dead though, so you're lucky there at least.

While Kyra and Quissonce starts handling the looting and Eve and Gabby round up the prisoners, you, Rowe and Dolah approach the horse.

Rowe goes over to the thing and calms him down very well. She must be pretty good with animals. Dolah walks over and begins to apply some basic wound procedures, getting tips from Rowe as she goes along.

“Shit.” This is very bad. It's a deep wound. “I messed up bad.”

“Don't beat yourself up.” Rowe looks over to you. “Don't think any of us were expecting weaponized tails.”

“Probably a bad omen to name the horse Tornado.” Dolah comments offhandedly. She finishes applying what she can before turning to you. “He'll make it, but this is going to either take days to heal naturally or a couple minutes with Father Calloway.”

“We're on a bit of a time limit here.” Rowe frowns. “Didn't you learn some of that healing junk from him? Can you do it?”

“No, not until I get a token of my faith to aid myself in doing it.” Dolah looks at you.

“Well, I was waiting for the right moment to talk with you about this, but I guess that's this moment. I spoke with Father Calloway about this subject and he said that as long as it meant something personal to you and something personal about your faith in The Great Will, it would work. Can you think of anything that would qualify that you could use to channel your powers? Something you have on you, preferably.”

An old talisman, originally belonged to an old soldier in our unit. He was like an uncle, still a follower of the Great Will even though most of the unit weren't. He showed us the ropes when we were a rookie.
Died in an ambush by Imperial raiders. We took the talisman as the only memento of him, and he had no surviving family.

Let's just say he was also a believer in the faith.
>>
Rolled 71 (1d100)

>>
You quickly try to think of something that might work. Your first thought is . . . the coin! That gold coin, the one that you were able to flip with your mind, that opened your brain to all the possibilities. That was the moment where your faith truly started to come back to you. You pull it out and place it against the horse's leg and begin to pray. Rowe and Dolah watch you, waiting. A couple moments pass. No, not going to work. You slip it back into your pocket.

Next you try that talisman you got from old Alig. He was practically an uncle to you and he was a believer through and through. You took it when he died in that Imperial ambush. You pull it out and hold it to the horse's leg. You give it a minute. You feel a bit of some sort of tug, but it quickly fizzles out. Dolah and Rowe begin to look concerned as nothing happens and the horse remains wounded.

“Shit.” you place it back in your pocket. You're starting to breath a bit heavier. You think about everything you own. Your cards, your books, your weapons, your trinkets. All of it has nothing to do with faith. None of it except . . .

No. It couldn't be. If anything, it's the opposite. A representation of losing your faith, not gaining it. The only thing you have left of Tobias. You pull it out and stare at it. A lone, cracked glass marble. Worth a copper if you haggled hard enough. You stare at it long and hard. (1/3)
>>
“Alan, are you alright?” Dolah looks very concerned.

“I, uh . . .” The images begin to flash through your mind. Lying on the ground, a nasty head wound throbbing in your skull. Tobias's body on top of you. He threw himself onto you to save you. Dying of his own wounds, covered you as they searched through the field looking for survivors. He told you to be quiet for once in your fucking life and put his hand over your mouth, making sure you didn't make a peep.

For a while you thought you might suffocate. You watched him die, slowly, and thought in death his corpse's hand would clench down upon your face until you could no longer breathe. And once you moved the Imperials would see and gut you. They didn't. They moved along and retreated as your reinforcements arrived at a sea of corpses. And one survivor. You came out of that a different man. One who no longer believed in silly stories or Great Wills or a set of moral codes. Burning became easy. Killing became easy. This marble fell out of his coat's pocket and into yours while you laid there. You found it as you were taking your clothes off to wash off the blood. You don't know why you kept it. You don't think you've talked about it since you found it. Just picked it up and stored it somewhere. A tiny, worthless object that you always seemed to remember and bring with you no matter where you went. (2/3)
>>
When you come out of your reverie you notice Dolah is holding your hand.

“Hey. Listen to me. It's OK. If you want me to try and –”

“No, I have to give it a shot. You said personal to my faith, right?” She nods. Well, this is about as personal as you think it can get.

You clench it in one hand as you place your other hand on the leg of Tornado. He was being rather good temperament-wise for a wounded horse before, but in this moment he becomes almost serene. You think upon losing your faith with that marble and abandoning everything.

And it comes to you. The light, the power, the energy. It flows through you, through that tiny, worthless marble. Your hand glows golden as a stream of crackling, magical energy surges out of it and into your mount.

“Woah.” Rowe seems almost dumbstruck at the sight of what you're doing. In a moment it's over and you pull back your hand. The horse's leg is fine. Some dried blood, but not even a sign of a scratch having been there before. You back up and it begins to walk perfectly, almost better than before.

You did it. You can heal.

We're going to need at least a day or two with the kobolds to learn their language.
We may need to employ some enhanced interrogation techniques to get intel on where their village is located, how many able-bodied adults they have, information on their defenses, and how best to kill them all before they become a threat to our expedition or to the town.

Honestly they are probably just scavengers/bandits. Not really something that muster a fighting force to be a threat to a garrisoned town.
