You hear the sound of fingers snapping. Then the rough movements of hands grasping the scruff of your next and shaking you about.

“Um, Akikazu, I think that’s enough. He’s awake now.”

“Who’s awake?” You gasp out.

“You are!” Akikazu snarls.

“To elaborate, Takashi-kun, you stopped in the middle of the road and fell into a trance.” Celeste explains. “You were stuck like that for fifteen minutes. We were getting kinda worried. So we tried to snap you out of it.”

You groan and stretch your arms. For some reason, your body feels unnaturally stiff. Then you notice it. “Why is there dirt down my back?”

“That was me.” Akikazu replies, without an ounce of apology. You glare at him. “Don’t give me that look! You were the one who went AWOL on us. Aren’t you supposed to be our leader?”

“Leader, huh…”

“So, what were you daydreaming about?” Celeste asks.

“I was…” There are images clouding around the insides the brain and they disappearing, fast. You try to grab hold on one of them. You fail. It’s like trying to spot a particular oxygen atom in the vast sky. “I don’t know…”

You do know this. Whatever those dreams were about, they weren’t anything good.

“Where are we going next?” Akikazu asks.

“The r—no, middle path.” You mutter. “Yeah, that sounds good.”

“Are you sure you’re feeling alright?” Celeste asks. “It’s not too late to turn back. There’s still eight more days on the clock.”

"It's pointless to go on if he's sick or whatever." Akikazu grumbles.

“No, I’m fine.” You give Celeste a reassuring smile. Even though she’s been by your side this entire trip, you seem particularly glad to hear her voice again. Same with Akikazu. “Let’s go.”

As usual, Shadows impede your progress. The team deals with them. How does it go?

You fight the Shadows and emerge onto the top of a hill. In the distance, you can see a couple of buildings arranged in a neat little row. There are several robot guards marching around the perimeter in single file, none of which look human-shaped.

Good news: all of you are alive.
Bad news: You all are the point where you might as well not be.

“Goddammit…they were tough.” Akikazu groans, curling up on the ground. He presses a hand to his chest and winces in pain. The ribs have been cracked. His face is covered in scrapes and cuts which bleed raw.

“I feel like I’m about to conk out at any minute now.” Celeste sighs. She has collapses against the floor. She isn’t nearly as wounded as Akikazu, excluding the nasty electric shock she received from a particularly aggressive Drive, but her mana storages have been burned down to the last drop. She can barely move.

Your body aches all over. Yeah, you definitely pulled a few muscles while punching and kicking. On top of that, you nearly dislocated your fight shoulder when fighting against a miniature Turret.

You do have medical supplies, however.

If you used five Basic Medkits (out of your nine) to patch everyone up, you could continue on. Will you do it?

We're doing better, though. Last time we rolled a critical failure for status we got beat so badly we automatically left for the day. This time we get the choice, so we got our asses kicked marginally less. And by more powerful enemies, too, so when you look at things in comparison we've improved. So that's cool, kind of.

That reminds me: Based on the last time we leveled, the maximum strength of Persona we can acquire from Social Links is limited by Ippon-Datara's power. So we might want to avoid picking up new ones when the squatters offer us one so that we can come back later when they have a better selection. So how should we balance this? If we don't pick up new Personas, we can't level Ippon-Datara effectively, but we get better Personas if we wait. Maybe save our choices to be made after we increase by a letter grade? At the rate we increase Social Links and the theoretical progression of Ippon-Datara now that we can grind that should happen not too far apart anyway.

Everyone opens up the five basic Medkits and begins to work. You strip alcohol swabs out of their packages and rub them across your stinging wounds. Akikazu wraps bandages around his face. Celeste greedily eats all the emergency glucose rations in her boxes. The color swiftly returns to her face. She begins to cast Dia, just to make sure. You follow her.

As you patch yourselves up, you hear lasers firing in the distance.

“What do you think that’s about?” Celeste asks.

“Something that’s got nothing to do with us.” You reply, too busy picking grit out with a pair of tweezers. Shit, it hurts. How does Daisuke do it?

A few patches there, more alcohol wipes and a pack of candy later, everyone is now back at full health.

“Ah, this is kinda weird. Aren’t these medkits supposed to be for the military?” Celeste remarks. “We’re using them, even though we’re just kids.”

“Are you sayin’ you’re only just finding all of this AETHER crap weird?” Akikazu says. “Seriously?”

“It’s a casual remark. Don’t think too much about it.” Celeste replies.

You stand up, your legs no longer sending waves of pain up your spine. “Okay guys, I think we should—”

Then you hear an explosion in the distance. It’s coming from the back of facility at the bottom of the hill.. Everyone immediately scrambles up and directs their attention towards it. Alarms are blaring, energy weapons are being fired and guards are hurrying over to the source.

More explosions. Something roars, muffled by walls of concrete. Now there is the sounds of a wall collapsing and many pieces of metal being pounded into scrap.

“What’s going on?” Akikazu asks.

“Someone is attacking those buildings.” Celeste murmurs. “Hey Takashi-kun, do you think we should explore it? You never know, Fumika might be in there.”

“What makes you think Fumika is in there?”

“I don’t know. I just have a good feeling about the place.” Celeste shrugs her shoulders. “It’s your call. At the very least, we might some treasure or equipment to use.”

“Hmm…”

All the guards have proceeded to the back of the facility. It’s a quite a large set of buildings. The front will most likely be completely deserted. It would a cinch to explore it and make away with all the useful goods inside.

You do that. The doors aren’t even locked. The hallways are a web of chrome and concrete. It looks as if this place was evacuated in quite a hurry. The roars and the sounds of chaos have faded into silence. It’s you, Celeste, Akikazu and a big lonely Area 019 facility.

“Any Macca here…no…?” Celeste’s eyes dart around the place. “What a shame…”

It’s eerily quiet…which doesn’t prevent you or the team from scavenging a couple of useful supplies here and there.

No bonfire to seen, unfortunately.

You find a large steel door blocking the way, half-open. It’s the kind that retracts from both ends. You are struck with a sense of foreboding. Whatever behind the door is big, you know it. You grit your teeth and turn to your teammates.

“Is everyone ready?” You ask.

“Yep!”

“No shit.”

You push the door open and enter…

You step into what appears to be an experimentation lab. Tubes of chemicals, each one the large enough to contain a human, are arranged in neat rows. Some are empty, others are filled with a mysterious, bubbling grey liquid. Tubes and wires hook the fires from the ceiling. Beeping and whirring come from the various machines scattered around the place.

This place makes you want to retch. You don’t know why.

You and your team step onto the whitewashed path and explore the lab. Right in the center of the room, next to two empty vats, is…

You blink, then rub your eyes.

This is not a dream.

You rush over. That messy hair is unmistakable. It’s really Fumika! You’ve finally reached your target! The girl is suspended inside the vat, fully submerged in the chemicals. Her eyes are closed and there is a sense of peace in her unmoving expression. Her hands have fallen loosely to her side and a mask attached to a tube covers most of her face.

You break out into a smile, as exhausted as you are.

“Hey guys, we’ve found her!” You shout. “Fumika is right here!”

“Seriously?” Akikazu walks over. “Huh, that was easier than I expected...”

“So this is Fumika Shibuya.” Celeste ponders. “Um, how are we supposed to get her out of there?

It doesn't matter right now, since the standard for Persona games since P3 has been four combatant and one scanner, and we only have three combatants right now (and soon, a scanner). But going by the symbols on the AETHER door, there are going to be a total of ten players. Are we going to have to leave someone behind starting two dungeons from now?

There is a white button on a console in front of Fumika’s vat. You press it. A hissing sound fills the air. The chemical inside the tube begins to drain downwards. The mask unhooks itself and disappears into a opening in the top. Fumika slumps to the bottom. At the very same moment, the glass door slides open.

You catch Fumika as she falls out of the tube. Her body presses against yours. She is covered head to toe with the grey chemicals. It smells like fresh paint.

Her lips twitch. Her eyes open. Her hazy vision catches a glimpse of your relieved face.

“You’re Takashi.” She says. Her voice is softer than usual, but otherwise sounds like she had just climbed out of bed in a perfectly normal morning. “I had a feeling you would be here.”

“We got your message.” You rest her on the ground. “Are you alright? Does it hurt anywhere?”

“That’s good.” Fumika turns to the side and spits out a wad of spit and vat juice. “How did you find me?”

“We, uh, explored Area 019 until we stumbled across this lab.” You reply. “You didn’t exactly give us much to go on and we couldn’t locate you by your distress signal.”

“So they did set my laptop as a trap.” Fumika closes her eyes, deep in thought. “Where is it, by the way?”

“I have it. It’s really singed and burned, but it still works, amazingly enough.” You barely know Fumika, but you’re so glad she’s alive and well.

“Of course. It was custom made.” Fumika replies. “Now then, may I have your jacket?”

“…eh?”

“If you haven’t noticed, I’m naked. I wouldn’t mind, but it’s cold.”

“What?”

You look down. Her body is slick with the grey chemicals, but true to her word there isn’t a scrap of clothing on her.

You notice those two…voluptuous orbs hanging off her chest. They are almost as big as Shizuka’s. Along with her eyes, her lips, her figure…

Celeste backhands you and yanks your head in the other direction.

“No peeping!” She orders. “Now take off your jacket, Takashi-kun!”

“Christ, you didn’t have to do that.” The slap barely hurt, but the intention still matters. You are now facing the wall. Behind you, clothes rustle and Fumika dresses herself.

“I don’t want to risk anything.”

“Do I look like that kind of person to you, Celeste?”

“Honestly, no…but I still can’t take risks!” Celeste exclaims. “I’ll apologize for hitting you, though.”

“Thanks a bunch…”

“Here, you can take my vest as well. As for your legs…I changed out of my school uniform in the safehouse. I’ll lend you one of my skirts. Please return it though! Those things are expensive!”

“I appreciate it.”

A few seconds pass. “Alright, both of you can turn around.”

Your first impression is that Fumika’s clothes are simultaneously too big and too small for her. Your jacket droops her shoulders and the sleeves are bunched up around the edges. As for the parts that are too small…it’s obvious and you definitely aren’t going to speak your mind about it. Not in front of two girls.

Akikazu looks around. “If that’s over and done, let’s get the hell out of here.”

“I don’t know who you are, but I agree.” Fumika says. “Introductions can wait until we’re safe.”

That reminds you. You’re going to have to explain about your Wild Card powers to Fumika. Well, on the bright side, she’s calmer and more composed than Celeste and Fumika so you don’t think she’ll flip out too much…

Celeste reaches into her bag for a Trafuri Canister. “Okay, just let me pop this open and we’ll be back at the bonfire in no time!” She grins.

Then alarms shriek throughout the building.

"Or not." Akikazu grumbles.

“WARNING. WARNING. WARNING. INTRUDERS DISCOVERED IN THE AREA. DEPLOYING SECURITY MEASURES.” A harsh voice screams. “ACTIVING IMPRISONMENT FIELD.”

The light from the Trafuri Cansiter fades and dies. Apparently, AETHER isn’t going to let you take the easy way out. Really, did you expect anything else?

Akikazu glances at Fumika. “This is a real pain in the ass. Shibuya, get on my back.”

Fumika takes a step forward, then stumbles. Celeste has to grab her arm to steady her. Akikazu rolls her eyes, mutters something under his breath which sounds suspiciously like, ‘Do I have to do everything?’, then hoists Fumika up. She wraps her arms around his neck.

“Now let’s move!” You shout.

The four of you race down the corridors leading to the entrance. Your vision is red not with rage, but rather with the piercing lights of the many, many sirens attached to the walls. Doors slide shut, only to be smashed open by Ippon-Datara and Ubelluris. Throughout it all, Fumika closes her eyes, almost as if she has fallen asleep. Whatever was mixed inside those chemical has weakened her. Probably heavy sedatives in preparation for the heavy augmentation from the Denizens? You can exactly waste time thinking about such things.

You emerge into the front courtyard. An electrical barrier is surrounding the entire perimeter. Smack dab in the middle of the path is…

“Shit.” Akikazu growls.

“Get ready, everyone.” Celeste takes out her rapier.

It is a robot with a blood-red eyeball, mechanical claws instead of legs and a submachine gun for a right arm. The light of the sirens glint off its white plating. It hums and whirrs as it scrapes across the ground towards your team.

“INTRUDERS MUST BE EXTERMINATED. DO NOT RESIST.” It drones. "HAVE A NICE DAY."

Then it raises its machine gun and fires a volley of laser rounds. Everyone scatters. You end up to the left with Akikazu and Fumika.

“This is certainly troublesome. That machine looks quite powerful.” Fumika notes. She is slumped against the wall. “Do you mind protecting me for a bit?”

“What are you talking about?” Holy hell, those lasers has been fast. If you stuck around for a single second, they would have turned your torso into glowing swiss cheese.

“My Persona can analyse and detect enemies.” Fumika continues. “Since the three of you are the only hope of me surviving, I’ll gladly provide backup.”

“Analyse…? Wait, you’re a—”

Fumika nods. “I’m a Spotter. There’s more to me than that. Give me a few minutes, and I’ll have all of its weaknesses and strengths relayed to the three of you.”

The robot charges forward. Ubelluris grabs in a lock, then punches it. It slides across the ground, but is otherwise unharmed.

“Now then, if you would stand back…” The tarot card of the Hermit appears in Fumika’s palms. She clasps then crushes it. “Moros, I command you!”

Ethereal blue energy explodes into the air, taking the shape of a pendulum-shaped, bipedal robot with glowing inscriptions hovering above its head. There are also rows of markings arranged on its bodies, in Latin, Arabic and all sorts of foreign languages.

Moros stands in place, radiating off a grey aura. It covers Fumika and her posture relaxes. This is her element. She is relaxed and safe in here. She gazes at the robot, whose attention is drawn by Celeste’s fireballs, and closes her eyes.

“I’m counting on you, Takashi. Do survive.”

I think the most important lesson I learned today was the difference in knowledge between the players and the GM/DM/QM. You know how I said the monster could be pacified? In retrospect, the method for doing so isn't something you guys would have easily found out. Yeah, solutions to problems shouldn't be super obvious but neither should they something only the QM knows. I'm glad I realized this so soon, otherwise there might've been some major problems down the line.

And yeah, I need to work on my encounters. I didn't spend much time designing the monster one which is probably why it blew up in my face. Another lesson learned: don't work on the quest when sleep-deprived.

Eh, I'll get over this soon. Since I'm here, I'll answer a few questions. This will probably be the last post I make in this thread.
