Well, I'm afraid I don't have the time for a very thorough response, but:
- quests are good because they can transcend the limits of other mediums. This is especially the case for a quest that uses an existing story or franchise to build upon. Currently this is not a lot more than the games retold. It's good to try and think up ways to make it different in some capacity
- you're using short updates. Not inherently bad, since they can be good to keep the pace high and everything moving along without unnecessary detail. However, the pace ISN'T high, which ~20 minutes minimum between a couple sentence long updates. I'd say this was the main factor involved in the slow and low number of player posts, everyone wanders off to do something else whilst waiting for the next one

There have been many pokemon quests but nowhere near as many notable ones. Some that stand out in my mind are the slapstick It's Always Sunny in Palette Town, the futuristic 'realistic' Pokemon: Southern Shores, the one set in the middle ages 'Medievalmon', etc. These all had some kinda quirk that made things more engaging, be it simply the style or setting.

Last but not least, they also had some meat to their bones - the updates were longer, and typically came more often.

Yep. If you are going to go on a well known franchise, well, it has to have something else. I mean, he last three answers to your posts were

For a not even mildly important fight. Just ask for a triple roll, get the highest (or somethinglike that) and then use that value to decide who wins or loses, Then describe the whole battle to us, in a medium to large post.

Later, when we get more pokemon and get in greater battles, you can do a turn-by-turn battle, or even better, a segment-by-segment battle, where you ask what the players want to focus on.

Anyway, you will need something else other than simply a pokemon game to make it roll. Either very good npcs, or really interesting gimmick/story.

Hey, don't worry about it. You're far from the worst QM I've seen, and starting out is always hardest. As with most things QMing largely comes with practise.

Well, as someone already said, this battle isn't something that requires several updates. The first fight has essentially no room for tactical manoeuvring and is best left to a single roll and a summarised writeup. Later on when the pokemon know more attacks and the typing is actually relevant combat will benefit for being split into more sections.

One thing that some pokemon quests do (which borrows from the anime a bit I believe?) is to have players come up with bullshit tactics. It's not just 'use tackle. use tackle', but 'come at it from the side with a tackle, take its legs out!' etc. The environment doesn't need a lot of description, but throwing in details about things that could be used tactically is great, eg:
- floor is hard and smooth, rock types and things with clawed feet find it harder to move fast on it
- there's some small rocks that could be lobbed around
- there's a tree to hide behind

Descriptive writing is hard, but one thing I find helps is to try to write it as the character experiences it rather than what is there. This can also give the narrator a bit more personality as a side effect - perhaps some things are described in an amusing manner, or with snark, or whatever.

Again, the trick is in adding the pertinent details and the few optional extra that give it more flavour.

Also golden rule of QMing number 1: never retcon, it sets a bad precedent and leaves the quest open for players to whine until they get their way - not saying that's going to happen here, but, just, don't.

Just conclude the fight and move on.

And a mix is best, whilst I generally prefer the earlier gens the later ones had some neat mons too.

Maybe, but I'm sure we'll fight our first bug catcher soon assuming a wild pokemon doesn't cut the mustard. It's better to progress than to try to refine.

"Haha you're on Toby! But let's not battle here okay? I think there is a clear space around the corner." you say grinning at him. "Yeah okay punk! Doesn't matter where we go I'm still gonna win!" Toby shoots back. Turning around and heading to the side of the pokecenter you come to the small area used for trainer battles. The grassy lot has some small rocks around that might be used as projectiles by Pokemon.

"I hope your ready to lose Gray. My Pokemon and I have already been in a few matches. Don't worry we'll go easy on ya. Go Pikachu! Let's see what you got!" Toby confidantly states releasing his Pokemon. "Go Cubone!" you release your one and only Pokemon for his first battle. A nervous energy taking hold as you survey the battlefield.

Toby's Pikachu standing on its hind legs almost relaxed and sure of itself. A couple of rocks strewn about that might hamper its movement o it's side. Your Cubone standing proud and swinging its bone club lazily through the air.

What will you do? The foes Pikachu seems like it'll be faster than you Cubone. It looks as if it's tensing to attack.

"Nice try Gray but my Pikachu is stronger than that! Quick attack this time and try to throw it off balance!" Toby commands. "Keep hitting the legs Cubone and we will win!" you encourage your Pokemon. Pikachu darts quickly after Cubone faster than before and slams into his side cussing him to stumble a few steps back before regaining his posture.

Swinging the club sideways Cubone hits the same leg again. Pikachu retreats favoring the right side stepping on a loose rock. Pikachu looks a little battered but still willing to fight. Toby looks like he's going to try something different this time.

Cubone seems a little winded after the last attack but otherwise looks okay.

Getting better already. Just keep you'll notice that writing will become natural to you over time, but keep trying to think of things to improve about your own writing in between quests. That way you'll develop your own style, but advice from anons can be valuable too.

For now though, try not to change things too drastically within a given thread. Save that for the next. You're doing fine for a first time.

Not letting up Cubone scratches with his free hand raking his claws across Pikachu's chest. Retreating a few steps Cubone readies himself for another attack. Pikachu looks dazed and stumbles around a bit before regaining focus.

"Okay Pikachu use quick attack once more!" Toby yells a little desperately. "Cubone one more attack to finish him!" you command. Pikachu charges forward once more but at a significant speed decrease. Launching itself at Cubone he simply moves to the side and swats the flying rodent upside the head with his club knocking it unconscious. Resting it's bone club on it shoulder Cubone lets out a victory cry!!

"Pikachu return! Damnit you got luck Gray don't think it'll go this well for you again!" Toby yells as he recalls his unconscious Pokemon. "But really I didn't think you'd win good match. But we should really head to the pokecenter now." He finishes his sentence with a small smile.

Besides the pokecenter was just built because of the increase of traffic through here to Cinnabar Island and it's right around the corner." Toby protests. "Nope later nerd!" you yell back recalling your victorious Cubine and looking at Toby, "Oh come on I was joking let's go. But you just want to stare at Nurse Joy don't you?"

"W-what n-no! It's just you should take care of your Pokemon!!" Toby responds a bit heatedly. Turning around and heading towards the pokecenter ignoring your friends protests you calmly enter and stop for a second to look around. On the right hand side you see a couple of phone booths and restrooms. Straight ahead are the Nurse stations that will take care of your Pokemon and a small area for pokepamphlets. In the left are some stairs that lead up to the trainer rooms.

Walking up to the counter with Toby getting redder and redder Nurse Joy asks, "Oh a new face! Are you here to get your Pokemon looked at young one?" Nodding your head you give her your poke all containing Cubone. "Oh he doesn't seem that injured give us about ten minutes and he'll be done. Now why are you back again so soon Toby right?" "It's because I beat him in my first trainer battle!" you proudly exclaim. Toby looks upset at that before saying that he did lose to you in a match.

Waiting around reading a few of the pamphlets you go collect your Pokemon from Nurse Joy. "Thank you for coming in I hope to see you again." Waving to Toby you leave the pokecenter and head home. Walking in the front door you shout in excitement "Mom! I just won my first battle! It was awesome! Oh check out my Pokemon Cubone!" Releasing him as she comes out of the kitchen. "Gray what have I told you about shouting in the house. And isn't he adorable!" "He's not adorable mom he's a badass!" you complain.

All right getting tired again so ending here I guess.

Walking around the front of the building you see a few people crowded in front watching a battle. You see Toby is going against someone you've never seen before. Looking at them you see a

Their pokemon a weird one you have never seen before. Pulling out your pokedex you point it at it and get, "Litleo are quadruped, feline Pokémon. In battle, its tuft of fur radiates heat, and when up against a strong opponent, the temperature increases. When wild Litleo grow stronger, they leave the pack and begin to live alone. Litleo is a hot-blooded Pokémon that is quick to start fights." "Interesting where did that come from!" you exclaim looking at it. Watching his Pikachu sending blasts of electric at the Litleo you get anxious and want a battle yourself. Toby waves at you saying, "Hey Gray watch me beat them then we'll have a rematch okay?"

this is hilarious on multiple levels.

You see an older boy dressed in a weird shirt that has an Arceus design on it and pants with way to many belts and pockets with a bandanna across his forehead keeping his black hair out of his eyes.

"Litleo use fire spin!" The stanger commands. Causing the tiny pokemon to gather energy in it's mouth before blasting it at Toby's pikachu who dodges it but sets part of the battlefield ablaze and cutting off a source of retreat.

"Pikachu use thundershock and end this!" Toby commands. Pikachu immediately blasts more electricity at the feline shocking it and making it look stiffer than it did a second ago.

"Come Toby! you got this!" you cheer him on as Pikachu dodges more attacks from the Litleo. "Besides I'll only battle you if you win!"

"Hah you're on Gray. Pikachu quick attack to get behind and blast it with your strongest thundershock!" Pikachu takes off sprinting along the unburnt grass moving past the struggling Litleo and shooting another thundershock into it. The Litleo collapses at that and you see the stranger recall it and walk over to Toby.

"That was a good match. Though looking away and talking to someone else during is a bit disrespectful to your opponent no?" he says before turning to you and holding a hand out, "I'm Marcel and I'd like to battle you later if you would?"

"Hey Gray let me heal Pikachu up and we'll get our rematch on okay?" Toby says before hurrying into the pokecenter.

"Gray as you may have noticed. I'll take a raincheck right now about battling you. Maybe later? If your still in the area. But where'd you get that Pokemon? I've never seen anything like it here." You say as you shake Marcel's hand.

"We can battle later on and no I'm not really planning on moving away from this area just yet. I'm new to the Kanto region as I am from Kalos. Which is also where I got my Litleo. Did you just start our journey as well Gray?" Marcel replies nodding his head at your suggestion.

"What brings you to Kanto then if you're from Kalos?" You ask a bit puzzled.

"That is the easy part my family moved here. My father is a Pokemon researcher and he wanted to work with the great Professor Oak. I only arrived here this morning."

"Heeey! Gray you ready to lose!" Toby's voice comes from a few paces away. "We've been in couple more battles since this morning. We won't lose again!"

"We'll be seems fired up. Well good luck. I'm going to go heal my Pokemon and go home to get some sleep Gray." Marcel waves as he heads away.

"You are going down again Toby!" You say walking into position throwing out Murdock. Looking over the field you see the rocks have been moved around a bit. The right side of the terrain is burnt by the fire spin. Toby releases his Pikachu who looks a little faster and stronger than before.

"Murdock move to the rocks and wait for the Pikachu to get close then hit it with Club smack!" You order your Pokemon who immediately sets off towards the rocks.

"Nice try Gray but it won't work! Pikachu thunder shock! W-wait no I meant tail whip!" Toby orders his confused Pokemon.

Murdock gets to the rocks and waits patiently for the Pikachu to get closer. Pikachu meanwhile tries to launch a thundershock at the ground type following his trainers orders. The bolt hits Murdock square in the chest doing nothing other than giving a good show. Turning around Pikachu attempts to use tail whip but trips itself over.

"All right Pikachu use quick attack!" Toby commands. Pikachu runs along the ground shifting his approach form left to right inthe blink of an eye catching Murdock in the left side.

Murdock retaliates smacking the mouse Pokemon in the side with his club sending it careening off to the side. Rushing up to it he hits it one more time in the left leg befor it recovers itself and dodges backwards.

"You're gonna pay for that one Gray!" Toby yells. Looking a little mad at himself for his earlier blunder. His Pikachu looking a bit winded by otherwise fine.

Murdock rests lightly giving no sign of any difficulty.

"Pikachu use quick attack!" Toby orders again. Pikachu runs forward switching up where he's headed before lunging into Murdock's chest.

"Club Smack Murdock! Put him down!" you say. Murdock brings his arm back before bringing it crashing into Pikachu's right arm sending it scuttling backwards.

Both Pokemon continue the close range assault with Pikachu using a tackle into Murdock's left side again. Murdock scratches with his right hand across Pikachu's back.

Pikachu backs out of range looking tired from that exchange. Holding his arm closer to his chest than normal. Toby's eyes are cuatious. You don't know what to expect from him for the moment.

Murdock is starting to breathe heavier now. That quick exchange tiring him out more than the others. He's still ready and willing to fight the Pikachu.

Well, ground type is one of my favourites anyway. I'm all for a predominantly ground team. I just think that Scrafty still makes the best candidate for a BA lookalike if people want to go down that route and that having a ground team with a dark/fighting tacked on the end isn't an issue.

"Man your Cubone is certainly a tough one huh? Pikachu tail whip! Lower its defenses!" Toby orders.

"Murdock Club Smack! Hit it so hard Toby feels it!" You command at nearly the same time as Toby.

Pikachu turns on the spot waggling his tail at Murdock cutely that he drops his guard more than usual. Approaching the opponent though the rocks Murdock starts his backswing giving it his all and sticking Pikachu across the shoulders making it do a cartwheel from the force of the blow. However it seems it's fighting spirit isn't out as it quickly rights itself and charges Murdock and hits him with a quick attack in his left side again.

Using a backhanded blow Murdock connects with Pikachu's head once more ringing its bell and knocking it away. Retreating to the rocks Murdock looks winded from the repeated strikes to his left side.

Pikachu looks even more ragged from that strong blow taking its time to move backwards. Breathing heavily it seems eager to finish the fight before it loses. Toby looks concerned after the last attack. You think he might try to end it with the next attack.

Writing. Well he has been training it all morning and Club Smack is just hitting it with a club no special attributes.

"Okay Pikachu use tail whip once more!" Toby says. Pikachu turning around waving his tail at Murdock once more.

"Advance but switch you club to your left hand and club smack to finish it Murdock!" Murdock let's out a cry as he does it before advancing forwards the Pikachu. The tail whip affecting him the same as before.

Nearing the Pikachu Murdock fears back to strike it but is interrupted by a tackle straight to his chest knocking him off balance. Falling back a few steps Murdock swings haphazardly at Pikachu connecting with its stomach sending it sprawling. Falling to his back Murdock takes a few to catch his breath before standing up. Pikachu stays down.

"Looks like I win again Toby." You give him a big grin rushing towards your Pokemon giving him a hug before returning him to his pokeball.

"How do you keep beating me Gray?
It doesn't seem fair!" Toby says. "We should have won that." Returning Pikachu he stalks off towards the pokecenter.

Well then he seemed upset about losing to you again. Maybe you should talk to him about it. After healing Murdock perhaps? Or are you going to pick up some supplies at the pokemart?

All right looks like we be chasing him down and talking about things. Also last post from me as dinner is almost done then I get to go be a nerd and move army men around and make pew pew noises.

"Hey Toby wait up!" you call after him. Hurrying to catch him you walk beside him for a few seconds in silence before saying, "It's not that your doing anything wrong Toby. It's a type match up that works in my favour not yours. I mean if you had the type advantage I'd have lost."

"I know Gray it's just frustrating that you beat me twice in a row already. I had hoped to even the score. Maybe even brag to Nurse Joy a little." he finishes blushing a little.

"So you only want to beat me to impress Nurse Joy huh? Well I think I could let you win once to not make you look completely terrible in front of her eh? Or just ya know not suck! Haha" nudging him in the ribs at the last part.

Walking into the Pokemon center for the second time that day you head to the counter and hand over your ball to Nurse Joy. "We'll be looks a bit more banged up this time so it'll take about 15 minutes. And you better not be bringing your Pikachu back anymore today young man!" She glares at Toby.

Walking out to the pokemart with Toby following. Looking over the merchandise you we a few potions and pokeballs, a paralyze heal even some escape ropes. Grabbing two potions potions and two extra pokeballs you head to the counter and ask how much for them.

"Well that's two hundred for each pokeball and a hundred for the potions. So 600 in total."

Looking over the money you have you count out only 371 before Toby hands you 300. "Here for beating me again. Just don't lose to anyone before me got it!" he walks away before you could say anything. Handing the money to the store clerk you ask for a bag to carry them until you get home. Walking out hoping to catch Toby to invite him over for dinner or something you don't see him.

Heading to the pokecenter to pick up Murdock you head home to store your new items in an old backpack. Wondering what lies ahead of you for the rest of the day and tomorrow as well!
