As you and Shino dodge one of the giant creature's lunges, you take a quick look around. You see smaller versions of Katsuyu all around, attached to injured ninja and villagers. When you land, you notice Ebisu nearby. He's pretty badly beaten, but conscious. As one of the small slugs crawls up on him, he calls out to you.

"Kon, you're here!" he shouts in relief. "Thank goodness. These creatures are causing terrible destruction to the village. If you can defeat them, we can prevent more civilian casualties. But they're tough. Only a real heavy hitter can stop them in their tracks. Guy could have done it easily, but his team is out of the village right now. It's up to you. Don't worry about those who are already hurt, Lady Tsunade is taking care of it. Just make sure they can't cause any more damage!"

You nod, then hurry and jump away again to keep the animal's attacks away from the injured. You find a spot, then scope out the situation. There are a number of chunin nearby, but they are mostly focused on keeping the animals away from the casualties. You doubt they would be able to do much here anyway.

You look to see Shino and his father also near. While you doubt they can take down these huge creatures, they could potentially provide valuable support.

There are currently two creatures rampaging, a giant rhino and a giant ox. There is also a giant centipede coiled around Pain, ready to strike if someone gets near.

You think over your options.

I don't know, I'd be surprised if Zetsu's report on Orochimaru and Sasori's deaths didn't mention that we summoned monkeys. It would be reasonable for him to assume that the monkey-man was the same person from that fight.

Also, man are we behind when it comes to killing Akatsuki members. At this point in canon they had half the numbers they do right now. Less, actually, since they've recruited Naruto in this timeline. We need to take some dudes out.

If you can defeat the summoner quickly, then the summons will cease to be a threat. You jump over near Shino and his father.

"Shino! I need you and your father to keep those two rampaging ones busy." you tell him. "While you do that, I'll take care of the summoner."

"A tall order for bug users like us." Shino's dad comments. "We'll be burning through a lot of our stock."

"But we'll do what we have to." Shino replies. "Good luck Kon."

The three of you disperse. While Shino and his dad keep the ox and rhino occupied, the way to the summoner is cleared for you. The centipede dives for you as you approach, but it's no match. As it bashes into you, you counter effortlessly with your new bracers. The giant bug is launched backwards and hits the ground.

As you prepare to fire a Heavenly Lance, Pain has summoned three more giant centipedes, which impede your line of sight while Pain heads off in another direction. They clearly intend on leading you off while the creatures continue to wreak havoc. It seems this one has no intention of fighting you head on.

If we need to boost the Lance with Nature Chakra to shoot through the Bugs then so be it. In theory we are still burning up Nagato's Chakra like this anyways. We gotta kill that body and utterly destroy it so it can't be resurrected before it gets to another Pain for support.

Except we don't know in-character that he can repair the bodies. The best we can hope for is that we wind up destroying them incidentally due to senjutsu Impact techniques being so pulverizing. Or that we get a shot at the Naraka Path, since that's the one in charge of repairs. Nothing he can do if that one gets killed. Why is it that Nagato can't use more than one Path per body, anyway? We see that his own body can use multiples at once, so is it some limitation of the way he channels the abilities to the puppets?

And I'd guess the reason he doesn't keep spares is probably something to do with only being able to have six at a time and the reanimation process taking too long for him to just convert fresh corpses into Paths on the fly.

These creatures are all just a distraction. The summoner is the only real target.

You get away from the bugs and find a spot that can serve as a good vantage point. From here, you can clearly see Pain heading to the center of the village. You focus your chakra. To make a shot at this distance, you'll have to imbue the Heavenly Lance with Nature chakra, but doing so should make it a sure thing. You gather the chakra and take aim.

"Impact Sage Art: Heavenly Lance!"

The beam shoots from your fingertip with a force you've never managed before. Sage Mode has made this jutsu far more powerful. From afar, you see the beam pierce Pain, and the body falls to the ground.

From behind you, you see giant clouds of smoke, indicating that the summons have also disappeared.

But then you sense something. You look back to Pain to find another figure with orange hair, clad in an Akatsuki cloak. He picks up the Pain body and starts to head off. You fire another Heavenly Lance, but it's absorbed. This must be the one that absorbs chakra. He seems to be headed to the center of the village.

In the center you can still sense several chakra sources in combat, but in the East you feel one of the large chakra sources you felt before waning.

Well, on the plus side, absorbing that Nature chakra is going to slow the Preta path down. It's probably not enough to turn it to stone yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's feeling less flexible.

While you want to follow the man, there are plenty of people at the center to take care of it. There may be no one to help in the East.

You head that direction as fast as you can, to find two adversaries locked in combat.

One is Kakashi Sensei. He's looking tired, and you don't think he can last much longer. He must have been fighting alone this whole time.

The other is yet another pf Pain's bodies. Orange hair and piercings. Purple ringed eyes, and the Akatsuki cloak.

"Kon!" Kakashi calls out. "Be careful! He can push and pull things at will! None of my attacks have been able to get through to him!"

"Fighting against me is futile." Pain responds. "I know you have sent the child away. We cannot follow, so you will either bring him back to us or continue to suffer. If you choose to fight on, then your whole village will come to know true pain."

The man lifts his hands toward you and Kakashi Sensei.

An idea forms in your mind.

"We can try." Kakashi responds. "Quickly attacking while he's distracted might work, but be careful. You haven't seen all of what he can do."

The two of you split up. As Kakashi Sensei gets ready to attack from another direction, you focus chakra into your feet again for another charge.

As you leap forward, this time something different happens. Instead of being launched backwards, this time you're pulled forwards even faster. Pain sidesteps, and you see Kakashi Sensei being pulled from the opposite direction. You slam into each other painfully, and just barely manage to get up and jump aside, as Pain pushes where the two of you were standing, sending rubble flying everywhere.

"There must be another one nearby." Kakashi pants, clearly in pain. "That's the only way he could have seen that attack coming. We won't be able to get the jump on him like this."

As Pain begins to approach once more, you consider your ever shrinking options.

Can't we sense the other body in sage mode? Whatever the case, I suggest we go for something that's visible but unavoidable. Lunge him again, when he blasts us either way we dump some tags, as his jutsu will clear us. Detonate them and now he's toast

At this point, you decide to rely on an old standby. If he knows your attacks are coming, you'll just have to make that not matter.

"I know how to deal with this, Sensei." you tell Kakashi, as you pull several tagged kunai from your pouch.

Your teacher nods, then backs off and gets some kunai and shuriken of his own ready.

You start slow, tossing out a kunai or two and seeing how he reacts. After making sure you can stay out of the way of retaliation, you bombard Pain with a hail of explosives, Kakashi adding his own projectiles to the mix. Pain tries a combination of dodging and pushing the projectiles away, but the explosions are steadily wearing on him. You can tell that he can't use his push ability in quick succession.

As you throw another batch of explosive tags, you quickly fire a Heavenly Lance before he has time to react.

Or so you think.

Pain pushes himself away, only nicked by your Heavenly Lance, and in the same motion pushes Kakashi, knocking him into a wall. Kakashi must have been rendered unconscious, as he doesn't get up.

You don't want to waste any time, so you immediately make to follow, but something catches your attention. The other large chakra sources have vanished from the center of the village, and reappeared outside of it.

You almost had him, you can't get distracted.

You pursue Pain, but find that he's actually rising in the air. He must be preparing some large scale jutsu. And you're right below him.

You could shoot him right now, which would likely kill him, but given the pattern of his previous attacks, he would probably get off enough to hit you before he went. And there's no telling how strong this attack may be.

On the other hand, he'll probably be completely vulnerable after this attack. If you could withstand it, you would likely be able to take him out at your leisure.

Each option presents its own risk.

You gather chakra for your attack, and fire before Pain can finish.

As Pain notices you, he hurriedly unleashes what he's prepared of his attack as well.

"Shinra Tensei!"

As Pain swings his arms down, your attack pierces straight through his torso. You see his body fall as a huge pressure hits you from above. You're pressed against the ground, and you can feel your bones creak. Buildings around you are leveled, and rubble flies everywhere. Sarujizo can't take the pressure, and disappears in a puff of smoke before he's crushed.

Luckily for you, Sage Mode holds out just long enough to stand the duration of the attack. By the time it's over, you're aching everywhere. Your transformation has run out and you can barely move.

You manage to tilt your head to see another puff of smoke some ways away. As it clears, you make out two figures astride a giant toad. It's Lord Jiraiya and Sasuke. Jiraiya hops down, then looks at both you and the fallen Pain.

"Nice work, kid." Jiraiya smirks. "You did a damn fine job protecting the village. I imagine this crater could have been much bigger if it weren't for you. We'll handle it from here."

You manage to smirk back through the pain.

You can count on Lord Jiraiya and Sasuke to handle this, but you want to be back up again if you can.

You take it easy and don't move to conserve your strength, while gathering Nature chakra to try and restore yourself.

From where you are, you can see the other Pains arrive, along with a blue haired woman. The summoning Pain that you defeated is back somehow. She summons several creatures again, but this time they're beset by giant toads under Lord Jiraiya's command.

You see Sasuke taking on three of the other Pains at once, his Sage Mode augmenting his physical abilities, but he is having trouble getting hits in. One of the Pains absorbs chakra if he tries to use it, while another seems to be like a puppet, weapons all over his body. Sasuke doesn't look like he's in immediate danger, but the fight might take a while.

It's then that you notice the blue haired woman and another Pain drawing near.

"Yahiko!" the woman cries, as she kneels before the Pain you defeated.

Then alarm hits you, as the woman starts to hand the body over to the Pain. This might be the one that can revive the others.

No, that one will be focused on repairing the Deva path. And even if it sees us, so what? Well, we don't know Kakashi doesn't have it. He's had the Mangekyo for years, ever since Rin died, he just didn't have enough chakra to activate it pre-timeskip. And this is, I'm pretty sure, the first time we've actually fought alongside him post-timeskip, and he was already exhausted enough that he wouldn't have been able to use it. So he might have it and we've just never seen it.

None of them seemed to be paying you any attention, as the beam pierces straight through the head, and the body falls to the ground.

The blue haired woman looks back in shock, then to you. You can see the anger in her eyes, as pieces of paper begin to fly off of her. You notice that the papers aren't ordinary, they're explosive tags. They are about to envelop you, when something blocks the way. A figure steps in and get covered in the tags in your stead. It's Lord Jiraiya.

He leaps towards the woman, then using a jutsu, his hair spikes out, pushing the tags away from his body and priming them to explode.

"Master Jiraiya, what are you doing?" the woman asks, her voice shaking.

"A man's got to have guts, Konan." the Fifth answers. "Yahiko knew that. I don't know what Nagato thinks he's doing, but you don't make the world a better place by spreading pain to others. You take it upon yourself willingly to spare others from it. That's what I do as Hokage. And we teach it to our students, and their children. And it goes on like so. I don't have to worry about making the world perfect. I just have to make it better than I got it, and the next generation will do the same. I taught you all about the Will of Fire, didn't I?"

As Jiraiya finishes, the tags go off and envelop both him and Konan.

Well, the way to keep a jinchuriki alive post-extraction isn't really something that can be done by anyone other than the Aburame. It requires someone who can drain their chakra at a distance without being noticed, that pretty much requires the kikaichu. There might be other ways to do it, but since we don't know of any I don't think anyone thought it would matter if we told them the method.
