For the rest of the winter, you are consumed by the thought of having your own pack of wolves. There's so many advantages, not least of which being their capacity for hunting. Wolves can track their prey for miles, keep watch while you sleep, even provide warmth and companionship, if not an extra set of hands. In a pinch, they might even be able to pull a travois for you.

Of course, there are risks too... They might never see a human as their alpha, or if they do, they might attack others. You feel sick to even think about what might happen if a wolf took a dislike to any of your children. Then there's the matter of Soqed. He clearly sees himself as master of the packs in the valley, but does he care for the outcasts you saw scavenging the waste pile? You somehow doubt he'll be as easy to fight a second time, if it comes to that.

Eventually, all you can decide is that it's worth a try. The prospect of friendly wolves is just too tempting to pass up.

The snow slowly melts and life returns to the world as the green of early spring sweeps over everything. You've sadly run right out of food.

Sorry for the delay everyone. The blame lies entirely with a certain writefag. Votes called. Writing now.
>>
Trym is 5'10" 182 lbs lightly tanned skin say reddish brown hair green eyes. Sharp pronounced cheekbones over a jawline that could split stone. Full lips under a somewhat shaggy beard the same colour of his hair. Corded muscles leave him fit but not overly muscled. Deer skin pants cover his legs and protect from scratches. A small deer skin vest hung over his broad shoulders and partially covers a small scar around his left side ribs where a boar almost gored him
There was a disagreement on the eyes. But the namefag did it in bread 3.
>>
Faced with a choice between starving or hunting, you take the obvious option. Your idea for food is all well and good, but of little use if you die of hunger before your crops grow. Fortunately, you're growing quite adept at hunting. You're pretty much on a par with Mesut by now and he mentions he'll have to up his game, as the pair of you bring home the kills. He also presents you with a gift. "Something for your son," he smiles, clapping you on the back. He hands you a carved ivory spearhead that he's clearly put significant effort into. Being made form aurochs bone, it's about as tough as stone, holds an edge about as well and he's carved swirling spirals into its surface, giving it an elegant and distinct look. Fitting to a shaft, it'll make a fine spear for you, or for Noh when he grows up.

Spring wears on and the last of winter's cold fades away, replaced by rather unseasonal rains. A few of the clan make prayers and offerings to Nila to not let the river flood, but mostly, it's just enough to dampen everyone's spirits and little else.

You have enough food to last half a season and enough to feed one person for a half-season more. You also have one small field ready for cultivation.

What will you do?

Now is as good a time as any and you've finally got half a chance to start your odd little project. You're unsure just how much land you'll need to grow a reasonable amount of food, but the small area you've set aside should maybe be enough for at least one person for a while. You collect the small bad of seeds you've stored up (oddly enough, the bag's from an aurochs and is quite appropriate for its contents), scattering them over the earth and then breaking it up with a small shovel to ensure they are well-buried. It'll take a while for them to grow and the size of the field won't do your yield any favours, but these are possibly the first seeds ever grown by mankind. Trym may not be aware of it, but this simple act will change everything, forever.

Over the next days and weeks, you slowly watch the shoots of grain sprout and grow. If you guess right, you should have a harvest in late summer.

>>44098032
Wow, that actually looks seriously good, for cave art. Saving that, I think! Everyone keeps this up and Trym might earn himself a stat point!
>>
>>44098858

Awesome, perfect timing for harvest then, might even be able to fit one more rotation in for fall if that's the case.
>>
>>44098858
It is now early summer. You have about enough food to feed one person through to the longest day of the year. One small field is growing grain for you.

What will you do?
>Hunt the aurochs 5d10 (Strength +Hunter)
>Fish in the river 1d10+3 (Skill +Trait)
>Explore the forest

>Other

Don't forget: If you're having trouble, you can ask your family for help!

And yes, you should maybe get two rotations in per year, if I've done my maths right. I know it's faster than real crops, but there has to be SOME concessions to convenience!
>>
Rolled 7, 10, 9, 2, 7 = 35 (5d10)

>>44098922
>Hunt the aurochs 5d10 (Strength +Hunter)
also ask our wife to tend to the crops if she can get some of the other women of the tribe to watch over our children.
>>
>>44098922
>>44098976
addendum: a single rotation in a winter climate isn't bad. I'd say a single harvest is quite enough especially before any kind of advanced farming techniques (burning down forest to make rich soil etc.)
>>
Rolled 4, 3 = 7 (2d10)

>>
>>44099069
ash is a pretty good fertilizer.
>>
>>44099020
Maybe I should stretch it out then. Fertilizer and crop rotation and so on will let you get more out of the same amount of land, per year.

Speaking of land!
>Small field - Produces 1 food per field. per harvest
>Large field - Produces 3 food per field, per harvest

The larger fields obviously take longer to clear and prepare, varying depending on land and workers. There's also larger, or more efficient but but for now, this is all you get. Meet the earliest form of 'zoning'. You only have so much space, keep in mind.
>>
>>44099242
Wow, the quest is finally getting to a point where maps are necessary.
>>
>>44099242
We must claim large fields and become the first landowners!
>>44099214
>>44099146
You are right slash-and-burn isn't bad for this kind of forest. I was thinking about rainforests when I said that.
>>
>>44099242
>Small field - Produces 1 food per field. per harvest
this is still a proof of concept.
>>
>>44099242
>Produces 1 food per field. per harvest
1 food means enough for one person for a season?
>>
>>44099242
And this is just our self tending to it, right?

Elia, could likely become a good farmer with his fear is it of hunting. He can gain a farmer strength doing this, and provide for his family. while we hunt/fish. And Create better things for our family. Once we tame wolves, we should get an increase to hunting. which should be nice.

While plants may be predictable, they are not quick. Without the immediate food, your little family may well go hungry and to make matters worse, Ebba's birthday came and went almost by surprise. Amidst the celebrations, you couldn't help but notice how much she's literally eating into your reserves too. Drastic action is called for. Drastic action involving spears and as much meat-that-walks as you can possibly fit on the thing. On a related note, your experiments with wild vegetables, along with the meat has actually lead Beren to invent the first shishkebab.

Fortunately, your hunt goes well. It goes so well in fact, that you're noticing the clan is somewhat becoming victims of its own success. The aurochs may be dull-witted, but even they know when staying in an area is bad for their health. One by one, the herds are starting to leave, resulting in less for your people to eat. Still, you bring home enough to feed your family for the time being, as well as keep you another half-season and half of you, another beyond that.

A small problem has arisen with your experimental field, or rather, not so much a problem as an observation. Wild birds seem to have taken a liking to so much free food in one place and routinely raid the seeds and saplings. Ebba and Sera have made a game of chasing them off, but you can't help but feel this is again something the wolves could solve. But how could you go about taming them?

The answer, of course, is simple; food. You take a few scraps and wait near the refuse pile near dusk, when the lean outcasts start sniffing around. You have little success at first, as the wolves keep their distance and flee when you approach - apparently neither brave or desperate enough to attack you so near to your own 'pack'. Over time however, you leave the meat for them to take. It's good food, much better than the cast-offs your clan throws away and they seem to start getting used to it, allowing you to approach a little more each night, although they growl warningly if they think you're going after their meal. One night however, you have an unexpected visitor. Soqed is waiting for you, sitting on a mound in the earth and idly twisting his spear in his hands. He regards you curiously. "What in the world have you been up to?" he asks. He doesn't seem angry, thank goodness, but rather just confused. It was only a matter of time until he took an interest, you suppose...
>>
>>44101953
