You don’t want to leave. You’re getting great progress with your Pokemon. But it’s time to pack up if you want to be there to cheer for Robin.

“Alright guys, that’s it for now. Good work. We’ll pick it up later.”

Nibbles is trying to coax Oberon into playing with him. He’s nudging him with his nose, lightly biting.

Oberon looks increasingly irate. He growls at Nibbles a few times Nibbles, who is larger and pretty naive, doesn’t seem to notice. Oberon was professional and keen to learn Earthquake, but his pride makes him too cool to play around.

“Come on, time to go,” you repeat. Vlad and Raistlin hang by your side.

Oberon is glad to have you call him away so he can stop interacting with Nibbles. As Oberon walks towards you, Nibbles playfully steps on his tail. Oberon immediately and comically flails and falls to the ground. You can tell that the only thing that was hurt is his pride. Nibbles gives a deep but somehow childish laugh. There’s no malice in it. Vlad chuckles and slaps Raistlin on the back. Even Raistlin chuckles when Oberon gets up and trips again because Nibbles is still on his tail. Nibbles steps off.

But a dragon’s pride is no small matter. Oberon gets up and roars in Nibbles face. Nibbles, surprised, growls back. Oberon spreads his arms to look bigger. Nibbles tries to do the same and fails to achieve the same effect.

From getting to know Oberon, you sense he’s more needing to regain his pride. His stoic, regal image has been tarnished.

Oberon nips at Nibbles with Fire Fang. It’s not effective for damage, but it’s scary. Nibbles recoils in surprise, fear, and hurt feelings. While doing so, he kicks Oberon in the leg, causing him to comically stumble again.

Now Oberon is actually mad. Nibbles is scared and bares his fangs.

“Stop!” You run between them. Nibbles stops and hides behind you. Oberon stops his lunge, but his sharp claw just barely touches your arm. A small drop of blood drips down, and he turns pale. You can see from his eyes he didn’t mean it. He shakes his head.

Nibbles sees the mark on you, then, barks at Oberon over your head, then hides back behind you.

“Nibbles, come back!” You recall him as Oberon swipes in his direction.

“Oberon!” You storm to him. “We don’t attack teammates!”

His eyes go wide in frustration. Didn’t you see Nibbles trip and kick him?

“Yes, I know. Nibbles did something you didn’t like. But you have to know he didn’t mean anything by it. He’s young. He likes to play.”

Oberon snarls in frustration, while trying his best not to direct any hostility towards you personally. Why is that his problem? Nibbles made a fool of him. He needs to learn respect for authority, and order.

“Nibbles doesn’t care about that. He looks up to the older Pokemon and doesn’t see anything but friends.”

Oberon huffs again, but much weaker this time. He very tenderly touches your arm. You wince. It didn’t hurt until he poked it. It probably won’t leave a permanent mark.

“It’s okay. I know you didn’t mean it.”

He looks relieved, but there’s still something else weighing on him. Robn’s reaction.

He keeps eye contact with you, then looks away. He’s not worried. Nah ah. He doesn’t care if she finds out.

“Hey,” you wrap both arms around him and pull him close. “It’s okay. We’re family, alright? It’s okay to be vulnerable.”

He lets you hug him for a minute, before finally becoming too self-conscious. You kiss your two fingers, then tap them on his forehead, then it turns into you rubbing his head. He starts to give in and lean into it, but his eyes keep a lookout for anyone else that might be watching. You retrieve him to his Pokeball.

Oh crap! The time! You have to go fast! You head out the door and onto the street. You take out Nibbles ball again and hop on top of him. “Come on, Nibbles, we have to hurry!”

Nibbles rears back and then starts stomping down the street.

He slows a bit and closes his open jaw. His enthusiasm has gone.

“No, it’s not that he just doesn’t like you. He’s just...Oberon is serious. He was in charge of the place he lived at. And when you’re in charge, you have to keep a certain image so that others listen to you.”

He makes a face like Levi’s, then chomps.

“Well, Levi is touchy too, but she has her own reasons. She likes you though. And Oberon will come around in time too. But he’s not used to just playing or having fun. To him, looking composed and confident is everything.”

Nibbles seems to get it.

“So when you made him fall over, that’s not just playing to him. That’s threatening his appearance. And where he comes from, that means threatening his safety. There’s a time and place to horse around, but not when someone walks away like he did, do you understand?”

Nibbles leans his head back to press it against you. You scratch it back. “It’s okay, buddy. Now you know.”

You get to the gate and retrieve Nibbles as you enter. You arrive just in time to catch Robin before she goes into the battle area. “Good luck,” you give her a quick kiss.

She smiles. “Thanks! I’ll do my best!” Her voice is bouncing with energy and confidence. She looks very ready.

Right as she’s leaving, she sees your arm, but she’s already being ushered through. You see the question on her face.

“Oberon. But it was an accident!” Oh damn oh damn. “He didn’t mean it. I step in front of him and he was really sorry!”

Damn. You really hope that doesn’t mess with her game. You’ll give her the full story when she’s done.

She opens her mouth to talk.

“Whatever you monologue about, I’m going to ignore.”

“Fine,” she acts annoyed. She always seems like she’s acting something. “Be like that. One of these days you’re going to need my help, and I’m going to ignore you.”

Robin’s opponent is an older boy. Tall, dark, handsome, but humble. He throws out a Kingdra of his own, to which Robin answers with Sylveon. Her opponent Uses Rain Dance. and Robin counters with Skill Swap. She steals her opponents Swift Swim and makes short work of it with Fairy moves.

The opponent throws in a Rotom that looks like a washing machine. She spends her time using moves like Light Screen and Misty Terrain. The Rotom takes out Sylveon, but not before Safeguard as well. Why would she use both of those moves?

Her Golem is out next. It uses Stealth Rock. It takes Hydropump to the face, but hangs on thanks to Sturdy. Golem follows up with Sucker Punch before it can use it’s next move, but faints after a well placed Water Gun.

Robin’s third Pokemon is Ninetails. It triumphs using Ominious Wind and Extrasensory, as well as creative use of the Misty Terrain to avoid being well targeted.

Her opponent uses water moves that hurt hard, but with Ninetails’ Drought causing intense sunlight, it manages to win the slugfest.

Her opponent’s next Pokemon is a Kabutops. Robin instantly dispatches it with Solar Beam. She had that in her back pocket the entire time, but saved it as a surprise.

The last Pokemon she has to deal with is Toxicroak. With Extrasensory and momentum on her side, she manages to take it out with Ninetails, despite it being worn out.

Jeanine puts her in another headlock.

The five of you head back to the hotel and get your notes in order. Vance and Jeanine are eager to help out, and things move quickly.

Robin’s opponent is actually going to be Eddie, to everyone’s surprise. He’s come a long way it sounds like.

Dick has a reputation. He’s okay at general tactics and strategy, but his real strengths lie in overwhelming power. Each of his Pokemon have incredible damage output. You know he has a Garchomp of his own. You remember it being pretty strong, but you managed to freeze it. His Electivire hit very hard too, and it’s probably gotten stronger. You see he has a Gigalith, but he apparently hasn’t used it recently. There’s a Mienshao that he likes to use Fake-Out and U-Turn with a lot. There`s a Samurott there to round it out. He uses it to regain the advantage after one of his Pokemon is knocked out.

What’s really interesting is that his family gave a lot of money to a quarry near Sandorp about a week after you arrived there.

Well that's just super. Aria is tough, but she's spent her life being a muse. She sings and entertains. That Regirock was a guardian. It could take a concentrated beating from a dozen other Pokemon for what felt like forever and not stop.

It’s late. You and everyone get some rest. You wake up the next morning early. You have preparations to take care of.

“I need to train,” you say mostly to yourself. Your hair is still a mess and you’re wearing your sleepwear. You can’t imagine how Dick of all people got Regirock to listen to him. He’s not a bad battler, but you know how strong that thing is, and how single minded it was about guarding the ruins. There has to be something going on there.

“Good,” Vance tells you. “Morning training is the best. How can I help?”

You reach out an arm, he lifts you out of your seat. “You sure?”

He smiles. “I know I’m not on the same level as you or Robin as a Pokemon trainer, but I’ve learned a few moves over the summer too. Let me help.”

“Sounds good. Thanks.”

Looks like Robin called dibs on Jeanine and Clair. Or at least, she needs their help to work on some sort of training regimen.

You and Vance arrive at the training room rental place. You start training Vlad on Cross Poison. He takes to it quickly. Vance has some good tips about any physical contact moves.

You still have plenty of time in the day. Vance throws a grape up to catch in his mouth to snack on, and Vlad zooms by it. First he cuts it in half, then he swipes both halves by doing another flyby.

You need to decide who to train next. You have all day today, all day tomorrow, and the morning of the day after to train. How long each session takes depends on what you want to do.

You have access to a PC in this building, so you can train anyone you want.

It only makes sense to train Aria. You swap Devon for her quickly. The professor is understanding that time is an issue for you and says he or his assistants will be on call day or night for any switching you need to do or anything else. He also lets you know the town is cheering you on, and they even have the community center set up to show your matches. “Win or lose, we’re all happy you’ve put our town on the map.”

You thank him and he lets you get back to training.

You swap Zappy Dan for Levi too. She has experience fighting Regirock and Aria and doing well against both.

You take Aria out and explain about Regirock. She seems intimidated. Losing to Levi humbled her before. Fighting a legendary that has more experience than her is a tall order. But she wants to prove she’s more than just born lucky. She wants to get stronger just like any other Pokemon does.

You spend the day learning a few things. Making sure she can use Relic Song at will is a big help. In her Pirouette form, she’s a natural close combat fighter.

Vance helps with the fighting moves. He’s very familiar with Low Kick, having used that move with Machop to defeat Clair. He’s able to help her get Power-Up Punch down too. You spend awhile learning Wonder Room, but if you’re fighting Regirock, who has absurdly amazing defence and only very good special defense, being able to switch those might give you an edge.

Nightfall is coming up and you’re starting to yawn. You keep snack and other breaks to a minimum. You also noticed Vance was napping while you worked on Wonder Room.

You stretch. “I think it’s time to call it a day.”

“I was thinking. Maybe I could train with Aria all night.”

“All night?”

“Yeah. It’s not a good idea if you’re a human, but Pokemon can make up for a lost night of sleep by using a Pokemon center. At least, in the short term, doing that is harmless. You don’t want to do that for weeks at a time or anything. A night or two isn’t a problem.”

“But all night? What about you?”

Vance shrugs. “As long as you don’t need me tomorrow, I can sleep then. Kat, I want to help. After you helping out my parents, helping Clair get over a lot of her issues, and everything else, it’s the least I can do.”

You look to Aria. She seems willing. She shadowboxes the air

“I could stay up and train,” you say.

Vance shakes his head. “You don’t want to mess up your sleep schedule and be tired during your match.”
