The interviewer taps her cards on the table to regain her composure. She’s stalling to come up with a way to angle this against you.

You don’t wait. You get up, grab the old straw hat off the floor, dust it off, and leave out into the dark night.

Outside, waiting for you, you see Dick. His large, ogre-looking friend is with him.

“You made me look bad on television. You could call this revenge, but this actually a matter of pedigree. See, pokemon breeders know when they have a really good line. Something that sets that pokemon above the rest.”

His large friend grabs for the hat. You’re fast and you pull it back. But that was a trap. As you hold it up and away, a flying pokemon knocks it out of your hand and into the mud.

“Problem is, of course, that sometimes the lesser pokemon become jealous. They think they’re entitled to the same...”

You brush the hat a bit to loosen the mud before arriving at your hotel. Your friends are all waiting for there. Robin just approaches slowly and gives you a hug.

You should check into that sometime, but not today.

You look to Jeanine for meditation advice. She just waves at your flute and says “you’re doing it.”

That feels right.

Everyone in the room falls asleep. But as time passes the main room becomes less comfy and you all get up and retire to your bedrooms. Aww man. You were just relaxing, but now you’re worrying about life again. Stupid brain won’t shut up.

Clair’s form catches your eye as she puts on a thin, oversized t-shirt to sleep in. Those things should require a permit! Robin’s hips lay exposed as she flops onto the bed without pants.

You head out to the training area and take out Levi. She looks excited. She can sense your tension. There’s a battle soon. She wants to protect you and the rest of the team, and prove her place as a guardian. Of course, her idea of protecting is to crush any possible opposition to the point where defense isn’t needed.

Instead of a mighty growl, she has a soft, deep hum.

Robin is in the other room training with Vance and Jeanine. Clair decided to accompany you. She slowly lowers herself onto the bench nearby, exhausted.

You figure you can get Crunch down easily enough. Levi is at that point where it should just be a matter of testing it if she’s already learned most of it herself. You’ll have to decide what else to work on.

It’s strange. Despite everything that's been going on, you feel more in sync with Levi. You’re actually feeling more confident after that interview. Like you’ve put a lot of small, nagging things to bed.

You still don’t know what to make of what happened with your dad, but you know you can take it at your own pace.

Training though, is on a time limit. “Again”

Levi uses Crunch again on the test rock. She turns it to dust almost too easily. You feel the fire in her belly. “Alright! Great work. Now, let’s work on Avalanche!”

Levi is on fire! She has all the motivation in the world to get it down, and she sends icicle after icicle crashing onto the ground. It’s sloppy and primal, but you think she’s gotten the basics. Before you can really confirm how far she’s come, the timer rings.

“Never enough time,” you say absently.

Clair yawns. “You were like this last night too. What’s gotten into you?”

Levi slithers to your side and roars excitedly at Clair. You fold your arms. “Sometimes you just want something really bad.”

She smirks. “I’m flattered.”

You rejoin Robin and the others in the main lobby of the training area. Robin’s exchanging Pokemon. You consider if you want to swap for anybody.

You swap Nibbles for Dan. If it really comes down to it, you might be able to make a run for the PC to swap in the middle of the battle, but that seems like a last resort. You figure it's good to have Dan’s new move in your back pocket in case you need it.

You arrive at the arena door without incident. Your friends all over words of encouragement.

“You’ve got this,” Vance says, patting you hard on the back.

“Don’t let him rattle you,” Jeanine warns. “He just wants to drag you down.”

Vance’s Sneasel, who has been hanging outside of his ball with him, gives you a high five. He didn't even try to swipe anything.

Robin gives you a kiss on the cheek. Clair gives you one on the other, much quicker and more reserved.

“Thanks,” you tell them all, then proceed to your side of the arena. The outside light almost blinds you.

“The famous Kat, from Novum Town!”

The crowd cheers. A genuine, supportive cheer. You always used to feel like the whole world was against you. You’ve felt unwanted, hated, useless, and worse. You’ve come a long way in getting over that, at least, most days, but this is the first time in a long time where you feel like it’s the reverse. The world is on your side. Your existence isn’t begrudged, it just tolerated, it’s justified and encouraged.

“And on the other side, Richard, from Chloroville!”

There’s cheering, but also some boos. You try not to enjoy them too much.

“Now, as we all know, this will be a five on five battle. The winner, having won 4 battles, will have earned the right to challenge the Elite Four. This is where the toughest challengers prove themselves.”

You reach for your first Pokeball. Dick smirks. He wants to make a show of this.

You throw out your first Pokemon at the same time as Dick.

Vlad’s Pokeball opens first, and he appears in a brilliant showy spin and roll before circling back around to his position.

You’ve been training with Vlad to be able to use two moves in the time in takes most Pokemon to use one, but at the expense of a little power.

“Looks like Kat is opening with a Crobat! She hasn’t opened with this Pokemon yet.”

“And look at it move! Heck of a spin.”

Regirock appears on Dick’s side.

“And Richard starts...with...” A hush falls over the crowd. “I believe that’s a Regirock! Hold on, yes, registration information is confirming it.”

Regirock jolts when seeing you, but restrains itself. It has a new arm to replace the one you blew off. You can tell by the slight discoloration. That makes sense, you remember it’s Pokedex entry and your research saying that Regirock will search for replacement rocks if injured.

It looks back to Dick. Despite not having a face, you can sense it’s angry. He holds up a small device with a red button and wags his finger. Regirock turns back to Vlad, ready to obey and battle.

You see League officials surrounding the fight area and letting out various Pokemon. Mostly Mr Mime. They begin erecting barriers to protect the crowds. The arena has several safety features to prevent any stray blasts or debris from hitting anyone outside of the arena, but apparently they feel the need for extra precautions.

Vlad glides forward slowly.

“Vlad. Go!” You need to specify your exact commands less and less these days. Vlad knows the plan against an enemy like this.

He raises his wings slowly. It takes seemingly forever before they reach their apex, but when they do, he’s gone. In an instant he’s across the arena and already passing Regirock. A splurt of deep purple follows in his wake, covering Regirock. The wind from it only hits you now. Vlad flies seemingly through him on the way back, completing U-Turn.

You see a tiny purple smidge, having somehow made it’s way onto Dick’s button device. You can’t really see it well from here, but you think some might have gotten inside it. He hasn't noticed.

Vlad returns, smiling at his own deviousness.

“A heavy use of Toxic and U-Turn! What speed!”

Regirock’s entire front is covered. That Toxic poison won’t be easy to deal with.

She twirls. It’s not her usual, showy, overly luxurious display, but a tight and controlled martial arts movement. Ever since Levi humbled her, she takes battling seriously.

Regirock wipes some Toxic from over what you assume are it’s eyes. It makes a series of noises and analyses its new foe. He keeps looking to you too. He clearly has unfinished business.

Regirock begins charging it’s next attack, Zap Cannon.

But Meloetta is much faster. “Sing!”

She holds her hands to her chest, closes her eyes, and sings a beautiful melody. You wouldn’t think it possible, but the mighty Regirock slows, then falls asleep. Zap Cannon disperses harmlessly before he can even use it.

“An unbelievable turn of events! The legendary rock Pokemon is taking a slumber!”

“Incredible, Chip! I don’t think any other Pokemon besides Meloetta could manage such a powerful use of Sing.”

It looks almost... peaceful. It stirs and your skin jumps. You think that if you hadn’t spent so much time and effort trying to come to terms with what happened at the ruins, that this would be messing with your head.

It’s still a challenge, and a bit of a mystery about exactly how Dick has Regirock listen to him, but you know it has to be tied to that device.

“With that Toxic in play, this is a terrible time for Regirock to stop moving.”

“You idiot!” You can’t hear him, but he mouths it clearly enough. The button falls off of the device and he fails to put it back on properly.

He quickly grabs his ornate Pokeball and retrieves Regirock, then throws out Electivire. Vital Spirit, you note. Smart. That prevents it from falling asleep.

But it doesn’t help much. Aria’s Relic Song blows it away as soon as it appears, sending it crashing back into the pond on his side. It’s unclear if it’s fainted or not, but the judges watch closely.

And the crowd goes wild. Aria can’t resist the temptation and shows off just a little bit, but she keeps her eyes in the direction of her opponent. She’s in her Pirouette form and ready to dish out the hurt.
