Welcome to The Lost Island Quest. Last thread our hero, Alan Rodain, dealt with some shady fellows who were following him, warned a person to not do something they will regret and poked Quissonce until she could cast magic naturally. Now, Alan ponders on the scope of his power.

>poked Quissonce until she could cast magic naturally
Best way to describe it.
>>
“Alan made you a sorcerer?!” Eve shouts.

Quissonce's eyes go wide and she quickly glances around the room before running over and putting her hand over Eve's mouth. “Shhhhhhhh. Not so loud. You don't know who might be listening.” Who? Ed? When Eve gives a thumbs up that she'll stop talking Quissonce lets go. “And no, Alan didn't make me a sorcerer. He gave me some insight into how the two of you manage to cast so efficiently. And I've adapted it as best I can.”

You speak up. “But still. You were able to master that in less than an hour from a touch?”

Quissonce thinks about it for a second. “Well, two touches technically. It provided a very stable baseline for me to make my discovery from.”

Huh, you didn't know what your new power would do when you tapped into it. So with a touch you can make a person . . . learn how to cast magic without bat guano and sticks of butter? Great for all the wizards in the Circle, if you even want to give them a leg up like that, but it seems very specific and not too useful. No, there's got to be more to it than that.

“Alright, so we should talk about what's going on with me.”

Quissonce nods. “Eve, go get coffee and food. This is going to take awhile.” Eve salutes and then runs out of the room as Quissonce goes to setting up the central table for the three of you to sit and chat. She brings out papers and quills, some books of hers and a few pieces of chalk. She sets up a blackboard and feeds Chester, her owl.

Eve shows up with drinks and dinner fifteen minutes later and you start talking. Quissonce begins. “Alright, so we should first start with what we know. Which means throwing out everything else, including any false premises we've already decided on. And that includes misinterpreting what Alan's skill is.”

You lean back in your chair. “Learning?”

Quissonce nods. “Exactly. What if we've been thinking about what you can do completely wrong. There are people out there that can learn faster than others. Prodigies and the like. But barring some of the obvious things, like learning how to swing a sword or how to write incantations correctly, the things you're picking up far surpass what an individual can learn. Whether or not you learned sorcery from Eve is arguable, but cutting your need for rest in half when that is solely a part of elven biology is fantastical. That isn't learning, even if my advice aided your attempts. Not to mention I doubt you could learn how to become an excellent fighter from one spar, or commune with the Great Will in one day. These aren't things you can just learn. So it's something else.”

You think for a bit taking that in. “But I feel like I'm destined to learn things.”

Quissonce taps her piece of chalk on the chalkboard, now standing up in front of a stick figure Alan. “Yes, but of course that's how you would phrase it. You see someone doing something, you 'monkey see, monkey do it' and now you possess the ability to do it yourself. What else could you possibly phrase that as?

>Well, what could you phrase that as?
>>
>>44252128
>"I've got a humongous cock?"

It's some sort of advanced mimicry.
>>
>>44252162
>some sort of advanced mimicry.
It's probably that, the QM frequently described us simply mimicing what they do. Like when throwing darts we literally threw exactly the same way as Rowe.
>>
>>44252128
My first say mimicry, but just mimicking something doesn't give you the ability to do so like with innate abilities. I'd almost say I absorb abilities, but I've gotten a few from reading and self discovery as well.
>>
>>44252128
>Well, what could you phrase that as?

>>
“Mimicry.” You offer. Quissonce nods and writes it on the board with a question mark. “Absorption.” Is another guess you make. Quissonce writes it as well and steps back.

Quissonce thinks for a bit. “Well, mimicry would mean you were imitating what others do. Which you do do.”

“But I've learned things on my own too. From reading books and my own self-discovery. I became a better cavalrymen from spending time with my horse, and I don't think I mimicked Tornado.”

Quissonce taps her finger to her lips. “Well, learning from books is something everybody can do. We can throw that out as an outlier. Maybe, outside of your own mimicry power the Island is meant to enhance your horsemanship. The same way it enhances the rest of us. Although.” She gets frustrated. “Mimicking isn't a good word for it. It implies it's temporary and that you're merely imitating. It's clearly at least semi-permanent and some of your powers seem too real to be imitation. I wouldn't call you imitation sorcerer. And it doesn't account for that weird out-of-mind experience you had.” She crosses out the word mimicry. “So, maybe we should call it absorption.”
>>
Quissonce walks back to the table and takes out seven glasses of water and a pitcher. She fills six of the glasses of water up and leaves one empty. She points to the empty one. “Let's say this is Alan, absolutely nothing in there and these six glasses of water are the rest of us.” She takes one glass and pours a bit into 'Alan'. “Somehow, Alan is able to take a tiny bit of us into himself for his own use. This would not only grant him a modicum of our talents, but also, let's say, this glass is Kyra” she takes 'Kyra' and pours it entirely into 'Alan'. “would allow him to, let's say pour too much, and end up adopting Kyra's personality.”

Eve shakes her head. “Well, it can't be absorption or anything like that. Absorption means there's a zero-sum nature to it. Alan, you're best at sorcery, right?” You nod your head yes. Currently, at least. Eve picks up a glass “Well, if he's absorbing that from me I'd be getting weaker right or at least feel him drawing on my power.” She pours most of the water into 'Alan' and shows you all how almost empty 'Eve' is. “And I'm stronger than fucking ever.” Quissonce grunts and goes back to the chalkboard and crosses off absorption.
>>
“So maybe the word we're looking for is copying? But more than a copy, a perfect copy.” Quissonce goes back to the seven glasses of water and pours them back into the pitcher, essentially resetting the whole thing. She then pours back into the other six. “When Alan takes on an ability of somebody, it comes from . . . the ether?” Quissonce pours directly from the pitcher into 'Alan'. “Which allows me to move on to my next point. What if Alan isn't merely a receptacle for this. What if his power can function as a two-way street. What if, when you touched me like you did, you reversed the flow for a second.” Quissonce takes the pitcher and pours some into 'Quissonce'. “Alan granted me a tiny bit of what he learned from Eve, allowing me to master the natural use of magic.”

It's a theory alright.

And there's only one way to confirm a theory. You charge up your power into your finger and poke Eve in the back of the head.

“Ow, what was that for?” She looks at you. Then she realizes what you just did. “ALAN! You should really ask for consent first before you just . . . huh!” Eve leans back in her chair, staring up at the ceiling. Quissonce approaches with great interest.

She looks at Eve. “Well. Do you think you might be well on you way to using a spellbook now Eve?”

She looks at Quissonce and then laughs derisively. “Fuck no! No-book for life. Weird though. I didn't realize there was a proper technique for running. I think I might be able to, pick up the pace a bit now. Damn, I'm going for a jog.” Eve gets up out of her chair and opens the door to go out. “Catch you both later.” Eve leaves and you hear her tiny feet pounding across the carpeted floor of the Circle.

Quissonce looks puzzled. “Well, that was different. I hope she knows not to run in the halls.”

Well, the two of you are alone now.

That's enough testing for right now. You leave Quissonce's room and tell her to enjoy her night before going back to your own room. You see Ed, reading as usual. He looks up at you with a faint grimace before returning to his reading material.

You go to your sack of crap you store under your bed and pull out the helmet. You sit on your bed and examine it in detail, feeling around the thing. It has two small compartments on either side of the eyes holes that contain small lenses that can be drawn in front of them to provide the wearer with some sort of bifocals like Ed's. You put the helmet on and discover the lenses are obviously not meant to be used by someone with perfect eyesight in normal conditions. You pull it off before it gives you a headache and place the the lenses back in their compartments.

You cast detect magic to get a good read on it. It definitely pings as magic, so Eve wasn't lying to you all those weeks ago when she told you to stick your hand into a murky pool of green water and grab it.

However, while you get a basic sense for its magical nature, no matter how hard you try to feel out it's aura you fail to discover its exact properties or even what school of magic it falls under. You curse your failure under your breath.

Well, Ed's been a wizard for a lot longer than you have. He's probably much more suited to figuring out how this shit works than you are. You walk over to him.

“Hey, Ed. Could you show me what this does?” You hand him the helmet. “All I can tell is that it's magic.”

He takes it and looks it over for a minute. “Suuuuuure, Alan. It'll take me a while though.” He puts down the book he was reading and pulls out another one while casting detect magic and turning the helmet over in his hands.

While Ed's working on that, you decide to tackle the problem from a different direction. You start to read more of that book by Azdor. Maybe this thing is in one of the two schools you haven't read about yet. You dive into Azdor's lecturing on the subject of Necromancy.

He talks of Necromancy and how it is the magic for losers, weirdos and genuinely disgusting individuals. It can both let the spellcaster bring the dead back to unlife to walk around and also allows for the caster to control the life force of others. He refuses to give an example as he thinks no one should practice necromancy. You admit, necromancy sounds pretty creepy. You hope that helmet doesn't raise the dead or something. (1/2)
>>
“So, while I was donating blood over at the Research Library yesterday, I met a pretty cute girl there.”

You look up from your book, seeing Ed still writing down weird numbers on a piece of vellum while stress-testing the helmet. “Oh?”

“Yeah. Said her name was Dolah.” Oh. “Said she worked with you. I have to ask man, are all your co-workers young, attractive women.”

You shrug. “Yeah, I guess. Is that weird?” He laughs out loud.

“Extraordinarily lucky. Like, 90% of Seaside is male. And of the women that are here, most are prostitutes. And what, there's maybe 100 casters in the Circle. So, 3% of the Circle is female.” So, Quissonce, Eve and the Archmage, whoever she is. “You're living in an oasis in the desert.”

“Wait there are prostitutes in Seaside?”

He laughs again as he hands you the helmet. “Here you go. It's meant to be used underwater. The bifocals allow you to see through the water clearly and there's a command word that allows you to breathe underwater and swim faster. I can't tell what it is without spending more time on it, but that will take hours of dedicated work with the thing.”

“Thanks Ed.”

He waves his hands. “Don't worry about it.”

You settle into your bed, deciding to finish that book once and for all. Only one school left and you already know what it is.

The last school of magic Azdor pontificates on is Transmutation. You are able to skim over most of this as Ed has talked to you about Transmutation a few times as it is his specialty. The example Transmutation spell that Azdor details in his book is the Open/Close spell. It allows for you to open or close a door or container from a distance, as long as it is able to easily do so. Azdor warns not to grow too reliant on the spell, as it can make the caster lazy.

You've seen Ed cast that before rather than open the door himself. Well, thanks to this you now have a much wider grasp of the elements of spells. You can place every magical artifact, spell or ability into a category to narrow down the possibilities of what it can do and what is required of it.

So this helm is transmutation, because it alters the user's body to allow for water-breathing and good swimming. That should give you a leg up on what the command word might be.

You'd think that, wouldn't you? But instead you spend hours trying word after word in Draconic trying to get the thing to work. You've already pulled out multiple thesauruses to help you think of alternate words for wet, water and gills. Nothing seems to work. You finally give up at 2 in the morning and go to sleep.

You wake up to the dawn of a new day cuddled up with that helmet. Nope, that didn't help either. You do your hour of prayer and then your hour of spellbook study. Ed is up at this point, eating some cereal.

You decide it's time to make good on that martial arts lesson Gabby promised you. You grab yourself some food and head down to The Sword and Shield. Sure enough, there she is, drinking with Kyra. The place is rather light on customers in the early morning, but without fail Gabby is here, usually accompanied by Kyra. Does she spend every day in this place? Where does Gabby even sleep?

You push those thoughts out of your mind as approach your group's usual table. You greet the two of them before the serving wench approaches and takes your order.

“So Al, how you doing?” Gabby asks.

“Pretty good. Still feeling a bit anxious about Rowe.”

Kyra waves away your worries. “She'll be fine. Probably be a week or two before she comes back.”

You hope so. “So, Gabby, remember how you told me you owed me one for letting me kick your ass for a bit.” Your smile is all teeth as Gabby's expression grows particularly stern.

“Be glad I like this bar enough to not break it with your head.” She finishes her drink as two new ones come to the table. You take yours while Gabby grabs hers. “So, I assume you want another lesson. Well, let's see. I could help you learn how to dodge a hit rather than keep taking it to the face like you usually do. Or I could teach you some discipline.”

You laugh a bit. “A bit like the blind leading the blind, Gabby.”

She flips you off. “Fuck you, I'm disciplined as fuck and if you say otherwise I'll beat you into a pulp.”

“Discipline. Seems useful outside of martial arts too.”

Gabby nods. “Okay, but it's going to take more than a couple hours, even for you. It took me years to master the discipline it requires to pull off some of the more advanced ways to fuck people up.” You have to put in the time if you want to get better, so you nod your consent. Speaking of consent . . .

“Hey, do you two want me to touch you?” Kyra and Gabby look at each other. “I swear, it'll give you insight into how to do something. Its a manifestation of my sorcerous heritage.”

Kyra shakes her head. “I'll pass.” She gets up and walks out of The Sword and Shield to go do whatever it is she does everyday.

Gabby quirks an eyebrow. “Does it feel good?”

You shrug. “I'm probably going to be the only person who will never know.” She sticks her arm out and you poke her. She brings her arm back and rubs it a bit. Then you see the moment where whatever it is passes through her. Then her face deepens into a scowl.

She jumps up from the table and screams at you. “The fuck was that!”

Your eyes go wide at her outburst. “Um, I don't --”

“Did Dolah tell you to do this?!” She rubs the spot of her arm that you touched furiously, like she's trying to wipe away some taint.

“I haven't even told Dolah about it. What happened?”

She has a pained expression on her face before she throws her arm down. “Nothing. Don't worry about it and if you do that again I'm breaking all the bones in your hand. Now come on, I'm going to go teach you discipline. Follow me to the beach.” She storms out of the bar angrily.

That was . . . unique. Huh. You've seen Gabby angry before, but that seemed like a whole new level. You can swear there was a bit of something else in her face too.

What could have possibly . . .oh, god! You are fucking stupid. Really Alan? Really? You couldn't see that coming from a mile away. 'Let me just mix and match my friends when one's a die-hard atheist and the others is a devoted priest of The Great Will. What could possibly go wrong?'

You bolt out of the bar after her. Thankfully she doesn't outpace you since you recently picked up how to move faster. You catch up to her before she reaches the beach. She is walking at a rapid pace and very purposefully.

“Listen, Gabby, I'm sorry I –”

“Don't worry about it.”

“I wasn't thinking. I had no clue –”

“I believe you.”

“I can't control what information gets sent. Eve got running and Quissonce learned how to eschew spell components, nothing involving reli –”

She quickly swivels around and grabs you by the shoulders. “Al. I got it. I know you're not a cunt. It was an accident.” She takes a deep breath. “I . . . forgive you.” That looked like it was particularly hard for her to say. “Just don't do it again and promise you'll use that ability on Dolah until she gets my sense of humor, Okay?”

You laugh. “Okay.” (1/2)

>. . .oh, god!
Literally!

She lets go of you. “Now, the first helpful part of discipline is it lets you overcome the problems you can't punch away. So we're going to meditate for the rest of the day listening to the sounds of the waves pulling and pushing against the beach. What you're trying to do is stop thinking about things, alright Al? So, try to stop thinking. I know I will.” She mutters that last part.

You walk down to the beach and the two of you sit in the sand with crossed legs. You look over to Gabby who has closed her eyes and has begun to inhale deeply, hold her breath and then exhale in a rhythmic pattern. You mimic her posture, her position and try to mimic her breathing, but eventually you have to close your eyes and stare forward as you try to let your mind empty itself.

It's a hard process, especially when you have so many roiling thoughts in your head. Sure, you can relax, but short of falling asleep there's just too much going on in your mind for you to empty it of all distractions. Hours pass and the sun sits high in the sky. Its noon and you're still sitting here. You're thinking about sitting here. You're thinking about how many hours you've wasted doing nothing. You think about eating lunch. You think and think and think. Ugh. Well, trying to force yourself to stop thinking isn't working, because all that means is you're thinking about how you're going to do that.

Regardless, you need to do something different if you want anything to happen.

This is kind of the point in discipline.
We're not learning to meditate we're trying to discipline our mind to maintain focus.

Well, maybe you can't empty all your thoughts out of your head because there are too many of them and they're all loose and scattered, chaotic mumbling asnd ravings, unorganized. Gather your thoughts, organize them into easy categories and put some unease and anxiety to bed with commitment.

The first thing you do is throw away all the unnecessary thoughts. You're hungry. Great, you know you'll eat. That goes. The sun is hot, you can endure. You start to toss out the ones merely slowing you down. Flashes of the past. Memories of mistakes. Idyllic reminiscing about home. It's in the past. These are much easier to discard since you've already made your decision to focus on your future.

And those thoughts are the ones that you keep. Your future. You bundle them all into easy categories. The concerns that plague you. Ones that you can put to rest after looking inside yourself and discovering what it is that you want. Well, what are the gnawing concerns you need to answer to empty your mind?

Ambitions. Those are the things that are plaguing your mind right now.

You haven't made the smartest choices with those in your life. Told by your father that your greatest ambition should be to grow old and wealthy, playing third fiddle to your eldest brother. You rejected that one. Your first real ambition you had for yourself was glory on the battlefield. You have that now and it hasn't brought you a tenth of what you thought it would.

Obviously, your current focus is winning Ceril's independence, but what about after the war? What about for yourself? You have an innate feeling that this island can change the nature and scope of the limits of what you can accomplish. You feel like you could achieve almost anything.

So, when you dig deep inside yourself and wrack your brain, what is it that you want?

Huh. This Island has been sold to you by Renault and by Blackburn and by yourself as a weapon. That's the farthest into the future you've ever looked. Somehow utilizing the things you find and learn here as a way to overpower the Kardas Empire, maybe march a few powerful warriors right into the Emperor's throne room and end his tyranny once and for all.

But looking at everything you've learned here as a way to help you fight and kill, just a new weapon to bring to the same, century-long battle – that's the thinking that ruined you. It's the thinking ruining the continent.

You don't know what Blackburn must be feeling. He doesn't look like he has access to many powers, so maybe that's why he's still stuck in his focus on weaponizing Seaside. Maybe he just can't consider it, his job and duty to The Republic too great to really let himself indulge in the potential of this place.

With your allies it's a little easier to tell, even if you don't know the full story for all of them. Each of them seems to be profiting off their discoveries here in some fashion. Quissonce, you know, has finally found validation for her decades of study. Eve seems more confident in herself. Dolah can heal others and Gabby and Kyra have put their more violent, unlawful talents to use helping people. Rowe, well, she may just be recovering from her time at the front, same as you.
>>
And for yourself, well you didn't find your faith and ask for forgiveness from The Great Will just as a weapon to help you win a war. No, this Island has helped the journey of your soul towards something greater than the killing machine you were. Learning and educating yourself, for its own sake and for the sake of becoming a better person.

Learning skills to help you and your country so you can end the war is something you need to and will continue to do, but that's not the point of this place. It shouldn't be. Defeating evil is not the end goal. Its a step to reaching . . . peace? Maybe. You don't know what comes after the Empire.

But there's one thing you are sure of. More than simple tricks or magical enchantments, the Island provides clarity and freedom. The freedom to become who you set out to be and the clarity of knowing how the world is supposed to function.
>>
And that's what you're going to do. Maybe while you're focusing on beating the Empire, maybe afterwards. But regardless, you're going to bring that freedom and clarity to the rest of the world. Allow everyone to discover the potential they can live up to and the knowledge of how the world was meant to be.

You thought existence was a bad joke during the war. And you were right. Tyrants and death, people scrambling for an inch of security in a smothering world. No hope. Bring the power of the Island to the rest of the planet and allow it to flourish again. Bring back hope.

You have no clue how you're going to accomplish this. Anybody or thing that gets more than 100 feet into the waters surrounding the Island immediately loses every power they've gained or supernatural component they possess. But at some point in time the entire world was like this place. There must be a way to expand the Island's influence to encompass the entire planet once again.

The Lost Island will not stay lost for much longer.
