Kaito sits in a darkened room, the only light coming from a window with the curtains half-drawn. He is in a hospital in Kyoto, and the elderly woman in the bed is someone who has not seen him in twenty years, struggling with sickness.

He reaches down and holds her hand tightly. "I'm sorry I couldn't be there for you, mom."

She looks up at him with wet eyes. "My son... my boy... you're so young! So handsome..." Her voice is frail, but full of pride.

"Yeah, some... strange things have happened. I've been away for a long time, mom, but you have to know that I didn't mean to. I never wanted---"

She shakes her head. "No... No, I understand. I always knew you were special, from the day your father gave you to me. I knew that your life would be extraordinary. But I also knew I wouldn't be apart of it."

"Mom..."

She smiles and pats his hand. "Where ever your destiny takes you, Kaito, don't regret missing me. I understand. Your journey lies elsewhere, not here." She smiles again and reaches up to cup his face. "My little boy... So much like your father. He was an odd one too, you know."

Kaito manages a smile and looks down. "I'm sorry I wasn't there most of the time, mom."

She nods. "I know. I love you, son."

"I love you too, mom."

A figure in an unassuming white robe with a straw sun hat sits in an empty lobby.

After some time, Kaito emerges and the man looks up at him with dark eyes, a storng contrast to his stark-white hair. "Are you prepared?"

"Yeah... I've said my peace to mom."

The man nods and rises to walk over to Kaito. "There is a pain that comes with being immortal; every man or woman I have ever known has grown old and died. This is the way of things, and for those who live to continually see it, they know a pain that runs deep. But though life must end, there is always new life to look after. Now you know part of how this feels."

"Maybe, but I'm not immortal," Kaito replies. "Not like you are."

"No, you arent," Raiden says. "Shall we?"

Kaito looks back at the room. "Thank you for watching over her, Raiden. How much longer does she have?"

"She was waiting for you. I don't know, but should her condition worsen, I will find you. It's only right that you be there."

Kaito nods and tells him that they both vanish in a flash of light, carried away by Raiden's teleportation.

They are brought to the top of Raiden's Sky Temple, where a storm continually rages. They are inside.

"Where will you go now?" Raiden asks.

Kaito looks out the window at the storm. "There's a lot of places on my list, honestly," he says. "A lot of people I'd like to catch up on and a lot of things that I missed."

Raiden nods. "Consider your options for as long as you would like. I will be on the top of the temple when you need to go somewhere."

As Raiden leaves, Kaito does just that and thinks about all the places he'd like to go to. Johnny, Sonya, Liu, Sub-Zero, the edenian royal family, the shokan kingdoms... There are too many places.

But he's got time.

Kaito makes his choice and walks up the stairs to the top of the sky temple, where he finds Raiden meditating in the rain.

The man got strangely mellow ever since purging himself of the Crimson Thunder.

"Raiden," he calls out, and the storm goes soft to a simple drizzle.

Raiden stands up and turns around, walking towards him with his hands behind his back. "Decided, have you?"

"I'd like to go to Johnny Cage's home."

Raiden's brow raises. "Very well. He currently lives in a number of places, owning property in the more garish locations across North America, but from what I understand he spends most of his time in his home of Venice in Los Angelos. I will take you there."

Kaito closes his eyes to shield them from the flash of light, and immediately feels a change of temperature around him. He opens his eyes and finds himself by a pool in the hot summer sun in the afternoon. The pool is rather large and is located adjacent to a large white condo.

Kaito looks around, trying to find any sign of Johnny, but there is none. Perhaps he is inside?

Nearby, he can hear the sounds of the ocean. Johnny must have beachfront property.

Kaito walks up to the back door and opens it, walking right in.

The interior is very modern, with an interesting open floor plan. The 'kitchen turns into the dining room turns into the living room' kind of thing. Kaito walks in and kicks off his shoes, feeling the soft carpet beneath his feet.

The living room has a lowered cough you can walk right onto in front of a massive television with a gigantic collection of films. He walks over and takes one out.

'The hell is blu-ray?' he thinks to himself.

The film appears to be some kind of reality TV show starring Johnny called, "You Got CAGED!"

Kaito puts it back on the shelf and looks around. Is nobody home?

Otiak looks around the bottom floor and finds a large bathroom. He also discovers a hamper with clean clothing, most of which have the name 'Cage' on them.

He wastes no time and discards his clothes and turns on the showerhead, taking the first shower he's had since...

Kaito blinks a few times as he realizes that he hasn't taken a shower since leaving for Shang Tsung's island. Sure, he was dunked in water a few times here and there, but this is his actual first shower in twenty years.

He takes this time to check his body and make sure everything is in order. No scars; it seems the Jinsei Chamber restored absolutely everything while keeping him in perfect stasis. Not even his hair grew!

After looking around left and right, Kaito cups himself and then laughs at the fact that this is the first time his junk has been touched in twenty years.

At least so he hopes, anyway.

Deciding that Johnny is good for it, he uses as much shampoo, conditioner and bodywash as he pleases, taking a shower well longer than thirty minutes in length. He relaxes before turning it off, stepping out and towelling off.

He finds an outfit of Johnny's, some baggy sweat pants and a shirt and throws them on. He looks at his old clothes, rather dirty and bloody.

Just then, the front door opens and closes. Kaito turns and sees none other than Cassie Cage walk in wearing a rather casual workout outfit. She stops dead in her tracks when she sees him.

Kaito blinks a few times. "Hi."

She takes off her sunglasses as she looks at this strange man in her father's home, wearing her father's clothes and eating her father's food.

She slams a fist into her palm and cracks her neck. "Beating time."

She runs towards him, fists curled!

Cassie opens up with a forward swing, but Kaito turns around and manages to place the milk on a countertop. As she kicks back, he jumps up and places the plate of food on top of a bookshelf.

Kaito springs up to his feet and focuses on evasion, dodging each attack she throws out. She's fast, that's for sure, but telegraphs herself too much. As she springs forward with a knee, Kaito pushes her to the side. She tries a sweeping leg but he steps over it and backs up to the wall.

Cassie glows green as she performs another shadowkick, but Kaito rolls out of the way, causing her foot to become stuck in the wall!

She pulls on her leg as he stands up, grabs the milk and takes a drink. "I want no trouble," he says as he puts it down.

"You've got trouble!" she says as she finally pulls her foot out, breaking some more of the plaster. She charges at him, swinging left and right.

They end up in Johnny's game room and Kaito backs up into his pool table. As she attacks, he rolls backwards onto it, ending up on the other side. She jumps over it and tries to kick him in the face, but he ducks under the table and ends up on the other side.

As he pops up, she picks up the 8 ball and throws it at him. He ducks and it smashes Johnny's vintage Mortal Kombat pinball game.

"I'm not paying for that!" Kaito says as he runs.

"You'll be paying in lost teeth!" she says as she chases him outside to the pool.

He holds out his arms and indicates himself. "Didn't he ever tell you about me?"

"Oh, thanks. You didn't ever come with him to see me?"

"Well, no. Uh..." She scratches the back of her head. "You want to come inside?"

"You're explaining this one to Johnny," Kaito says as he follows her back into the condo.

Once in, Cassie takes out a small phone and dials Johnny's number.

"Since when did phones get that small?" he asks. She shoots him a crazy look. "Twenty years," he reminds her.

The other end picks up. "Hey, dad? Listen, there's a---What? Then put him on! I don't have time to talk to you, Charles, even if you are his agent!"

She pauses as she listens. "Because I'm his fucking daughter and I can break your kneecaps! So put him on!"

Kaito whistles to himself as he takes a gulp of milk.

"Hey, dad? It's Cass. There's, uh... Someone here to talk to you."

She hands him the phone.

"I'M ON MY WAY!" Johnny hangs up and Kaito hands her the phone.

"You're not like what I thought you were whenever dad talked about you," she says as she slips it into her pocket.

"Well, everyone else that dad is friends with from the Outworld War is just so... I don't know, kind of stuck up. Stoic. A hardass."

"Well, they've had twenty years on me. Hey, do you have any chips?"

She opens up a snack cabinet, showing all kinds of chips, pretzels and more. "Yeah, why?"

"Because a good movie marathon needs chips! I have to catch up on what I've missed!"

She cocks a brow and takes some out of the cupboard along with a bowl. She sets them down. "I'll go change into some dry clothes," she says. "Uh, make yourself comfortable, I guess?"

He nods as she leaves.

As he throws away the glass, she stands in the doorway and asks, "Hey, so... Dad told me once that the story everyone put out about Liu Kang killing Shao Kahn at the end of the Outworld War wasn't entirely true. He was there and saw what happened."

Kaito pauses. "And?"

"Is it true? Were you the one to actually take down Shao Kahn?"

She hands it to him and he looks at the page.

"Let's see here... interdimensional warlord Shao Kahn... Blah blah blah New York... Blah blah... Defeated by a band of warriors from Earth led by the shaolin monk Liu Kang? The Emperor's daughter betrayed him... Citadel destroyed. Yeah, that's all technically true, but there's a lot of detail missing!" He looks up at her. "Didn't anyone want to clear up any of this?"

"They all kind of mutually agreed not to try and be famous for saving the world and everyone went their separate ways. A few things have cropped up since then that's brought them all together but, from what dad told me, everyone sort of just did their duty and went on with it."

"You're telling me that Johnny didn't try and make himself famous as one of the people who saved the world?"

"Well, people know he was there and he got a lot of publicity for it---he says it helped save his movie career. But the real truth is kept between the people who were there. Since a lot of people weren't around due to the soulnado, they bought the cover story."

She counters with a smug look of her own and replies, "Oh, I could handle it. I'm a Cage AND a Blade, thank you very much."

"Maybe we could have a tournament some time, without all the usual stuff; you know, neck-breaking, spine-splitting, toe-stubbing."

"But those are the best parts!" she jokes.

Just then, the door opens and all but slams. Kaito and Cassie walk into the next room and the displaced brawler gets his first look at Johnny Cage.

Aside from grey hair around his ears and lighter eyebrows, and some weary lines near his eyes, he still looks like the same old Johnny (with a slightly thinner hairline, admittedly). The world-famous actor looks at Kaito and his jaw nearly drops to the floor.

Without saying a word, Johnny storms over and throws Kaito into a massive, tight brohug. "Kaito! I can't believe it! I can't believe it!"

He picks him up and spins in place as Kaito struggles to breathe. "I knew it! I always knew this day would come, hahahahah!"

He finally sets him down and holds him at arm's length. "Are you alright? What the hell was it like napping for that long, anyway? Look at you, so damn spry and young! You still look almost half as good as me!"

He shakes Kaito again but before the young man can reply, Johnny throws him into another hug. "It's so damn good to see you up and about!"

Cassie looks on as she leans in the doorway, bemused.

Kaito manages to hug him back. "It's good to see you too!" he manages to choke out.

Johnny lets him down. "How did you marry Sonya, you handsome devil you?" Kaito asks.

"Oh, it wasn't easy," Johnny laughs. "That woman is a lot of work, but she's my work, you know?"

Johnny looks over at Cassie and throws an arm around her. "This is Cassie!"

"He knows, dad. I tried to throw him out when I came home to find him here."

Johnny looks around. "Oh. Damn. Well, I got loads of money, so that's no big deal. Kaito! You hungry? Make yourself at home! How long are you staying? I should call up the rest of the gang and see who I can wrangle up!"

Johnny suddenly leans forward and sniffs. "Is that my shampoo?"

"Yeah, I uh, made myself comfortable."

"Great!" Johnny flashes him another smile. "Come on, I've got twenty years of stuff I need to catch you up on!"

Johnny and Cassie sit Kaito down and have an all-night movie marathon, including the Mortal Kombat Trilogy, in which Kaito gets to see himself protrayed by Kane Kosugi, something he finds very flattering. Johnny only learned the details of Kaito's relationship to his father through second-hand sources, and so Kaito's father did not play a large role in the film, however in the middle of the second film Kaito's father appeared in an extended flashback scene and was portrayed by Kane's father Sho. Kaito sat, ate junk food and palled around with Johnny and discussed all that he had missed throughout the years. Kaito spends the night in the guest room.

The next day, they both take him shopping. Kaito picks up some new clothes and is amazed at how much technology has advanced in the last twenty years, particularly the internet and cell phones, something that everyone seems to have immediate access to.

With some money from Johnny, Kaito gets set up with a nice phone that the actor himself is personally paying for. The Cage duo takes Kaito on a tour of Los Angelos, eating out at a nice place. Johnny explains that Sonya is, unfortunately, almost always away on OWEA business. As a general now, she has a lot more responsibility but they've managed to work out an acceptable amount of time for seeing each other. Kaito also learns that Cassie is enrolled in the military and is currently on leave; she hopes to join the Special Forces like her mother.

The day after, Johnny takes Kaito to the set of his new movie, 'So You Think I Can Die?' and introduces him to some of the producers and his fellow actors. After talking to the producers, Johnny gets Kaito a chance to have an extra role in the movie as a thug that Johnny beats up.

He promises that it's nothing personal.

On the fourth day, Kaito is hanging out with Johnny in his condo while Cassie is out running some errands.

Johnny brings in a tray of his famous shadow-pancakes for breakfast and they both dig in.

"I don't know how you live this lifestyle," Kaito says. "I feel like I haven't eaten this much since that feast on Shang Tsung's island."

Johnny shrugs. "I'd like to say that it gets easier with age, but truth is, it doesn't," he laughs. "So, what's your plan from here?"

Kaito puts down his fork. "Really, Johnny?"

"Sorry, sorry. But no, I don't think anybody's seen him. I tried asking Sonya where he was but all she said was that he was 'on assignment' and left it at that."

Kaito softly chews while Johnny finishes a glass of orange juice. "But since you mentioned Sub-Zero... I've got a favor I want to ask you."

"Shoot."

Johnny puts his hands together. "I'm not... in the game, so to speak, Kaito. The OWEA, Outworld and Edenian politics, the other realms... I helped with Shinnok but I got out, you know? Went back to this," he indicated his home, "made more movies, had Cassie... Sonya's still in the game."

"I don't get what you mean. Where are you going?"

"Kaito, I want back in, you know? I miss going on adventures and being part of the bigger picture."

"So why don't you?"

"Contracts, mostly. And Sonya. But I've got a friend in the White House, the Secretary of Defense."

"You're friends with the Secretary of Defense?"

"I made some connections during my time thanks to my involvement with the Defenders. Anyway, I'm thinking of putting a team together. A sort of new Defenders, that kind of thing. It's a secret right now, but I've got Cassie on board."

"Alright, so what's your favor?"

"This is the last thing I expected, but I can't tell you how glad I am that you're finally up and I can give you the offer: I want you on my team."

"Isn't that the OWEA's job?"

"Somewhat, yes, but there's a lot of strange politics involved with the OWEA. It came out just after the invasion and the legislation on it is kind of funky. Secretary Blake feels that there's almost no oversight and that sections of the government are growing worried."

"This sounds a bit political for my liking," Kaito replies.

"Everything on that side of things will be dealt by me and Blake. What we want is a team that the world can look to as its heroes, you know? The first line of defense against extra-dimensional threats. The OWEA is that, but they operate in the shadows. We want a team that can inspire people."

"Why me?"

"Are you kidding? Why NOT you? You'd be the only one on the team who was with us for the golden days! You'd have the most experience out of everyone. You'd practically be their captain. The only person you would report to is me and Blake is prepared to give us funding out the wazoo; I'm talking a base, training programs, cutting edge technology, everything!"

Kaito's brow raises at that. "Who else were you thinking of recruiting?"

"I've got a list of potential recruits and, assuming you'd be on my side of things, I'm interested in having you help me get them on board. I'd be pulling people from the Wu Shi Academy, Shirai Ryu, Lin Kuei, Special Forces---Maybe even Outworld or Edenia? We're trying to go with a kind of "United We Stand" kind of thing, you know? People from different walks of life, different training and from different places---maybe even worlds---all working together, just like the old Defenders."

Johnny sits back a bit. "We want a kind of safety net. All of us guys who were around for the invasion can still fight, but a lot of us have larger commitments now, you know? Sub-Zero and Scorpion--Sorry, Hanzo--run their own clans. Liu's off in Edenia playing hide the sausage with Kitana and Lao's way deep into his 'wise old Kung Fu master' thing. Sonya... Well, she's always busy."

"But what's left? What threats do you think might pop up?"

"Kaito, come on--there's ALWAYS somwthing. My skin's been itching with worry over when the next interdimensional warlord turns his sights to us or when that situation in the Netherrealm stabilizes and they make a move again, or if Outworld topples. Outworld, let me tell you, is one border skirmish away from breaking out into civil war again. I don't know if Raiden told you the whole story, but things there are actually pretty tense. Plus there's the other realms; outside of Edenia, we haven't made many friends."

"What's up in Outworld?"

"Things are stable, for now. But from what I understand, there's trouble brewing under the surface. The new emperor, Kotal Kahn, is trying to establish dominance over the other lands, but everyone wants their independence. To his credit, he hasn't been going about it violently, but things aren't as easy there was they were ten years ago."

Kaito sits back. "Hmm... Well, if you don't mind, I'd like to think about it and take some time to take stock of how things are."

"Sure, no problem," Johnny says. "From what I've been told, we might not even get the team off the ground until maybe a year or two from now, so you've got plenty of time."

Kaito nods and stands up. "I think I'll give Raiden a call and go chill with the Lin Kuei."

"Pun intended?"

"I hope not, their house better be warm," Kaito replies.

"Anything you need, just let me know. I'm a phone call away," Johnny says.

Kaito nods. As he prepares to call out to Raiden, Johnny also adds, "And Kaito! Even if you don't want on the team, I just want to say that it's great to see you back."

Kaito smiles and throws the actor a thumbs-up before calling out Raiden's name. A moment later, Kaito is taken to the Sky Temple where Raiden is meditating. "Yes?"

"I'd like to go to the Lin Kuei temple, if that's alright."

Raiden nods. A moment later, Kaito is gone.

In contrast to Venice, Arktica is much more dreary and cold. Kaito pulls his new clothes tight to his body and heads through a dark cave. On the other side of it is a massive temple, one that Kaito recognizes from his time watching his friends in the demiplane.

As he proceeds, four bursts of snow around him reveal four warriors dressed in blue. The Lin Kuei warriors hold up their fists.

"Halt! You intrude upon our territory! State your business with the Lin Kuei!"

Kaito whips around to face the entrance of the Lin Kuei temple and sees a man standing there. He wears much less than the others, with his face and arms exposed beneath his blue vest, but despite his skin looking pale and slightly blue, he is completely relaxed and comfortable.

Kuai Liang, though now he has one hell of a badass beard.

"Akayama Kaito, in the flesh and awake."

"What was this? A test?"

"Just to see if you're still the same fighter I remember after all those years, the same warrior who saved me from the Cyber Initiative. I was informed of your awakening by Raiden. I have been expecting you."

Kaito and Kuai approach each other and the older Lin Kuei throws him into a hug. "It's good to see you again, Kuai," Kaito smiles. "Look at you! You look great!"

"Speak for yourself, young one," Kuai jokes as they move into the temple. "Come inside. It's warmer." Kaito looks back at the four sentries picking themselves up.

"Are those guys going to be okay?"

"They consider it an honor. Think nothing of it."

The interior of the Lin Kuei temple is dimly lit, mostly by candles and braziers and dragon statues with flames in their mouths. As Kuai brings him in, they make conversation about what Kaito has been up to since waking up and spending time with Johnny.

As they enter the main chamber, Kaito turns to see someone waiting for them--Sareena. She looks much like he last remembered her, though she no longer wears the colors and symbol of the Brotherhood of Shadow. Now her outfit is black and blue and bears the insignia of the Lin Kuei.

"Kaito," she says with a smile, approaching to give him a hug. "I can't believe it! It's so good to see you!"

"Likewise," he says, returning her hug. As she pulls away, Kaito can't help but notice something on her finger--a ring.

Sub-Zero walks around and places an arm around her. "You're welcome here at our temple for as long as you desire. Is there anything we can do to make you comfortable?"

Kaito elbows Sareena softly in the ribs. "So, tied down, huh? Whatever happened to, and I quote, 'Getting closer to my victims? Muahahaha!'"

Sareena gives him a smile and an incredulous look. "I'm no longer a demon. And no longer an assassin, either. In fact... I'm a mother."

Kaito's brow shoots up. "What? I wasn't told!" He looks at Kuai. "Are you telling me there's a little Sub-Zero running around? Where is he?"

"Zian is currently training on the nearby mountain. He is set to return tomorrow night."

"Is he a strong fighter?" Kaito asks.

Kuai smiles the smile of a proud father. "The best."

"Well, congratulations to the both of you, I can't tell you guys how happy I am for you. I'm sorry that I don't have a wedding gift but I was in the middle of a beauty sleep."

Sareena waves the notion away. "We didn't have a very grand ceremony anyway. Very simple."

Sub-Zero invites Kaito to tea, where he continues to catch up with the pair. As he drinks it, he can't help but whistle---the Lin Kuei's grand master can brew one hell of a cup of tea.

"I tried for many years to bring Bi-Han back to the realm of the living," Sub-Zero says as they drink. "But his soul is now darker than any. He belongs to the Netherrealm."

Sareena reaches over to hold his hand.

"How did he escape?" Kaito asks.

"The Brotherhood of Shadow attacked the temple, but it was a diversion. In the midst of the attack, the one known as Havik snuck into the temple with his chaosrealm warriors and broke him out."

Kaito's eyes narrow as he hears Havik's name.

Kaito watches as Kuai walks away. He looks at Sareena. "What was that about?"

"When Havik and Noob Saibot defeated him through trickery, Zian stepped forth to oppose them. He was only ten years old at the time. Noob was prepared to kill the boy, but Havik stayed his hand. I do not know why; the motivations of that one will forever be a mystery. Noob agreed. I do not believe it was out of pity or some misplaced sense of affection for his nephew, for I know that no such things remain within the abyss of that wraith's heart. He wounded Zian in mimicry of Sub-Zero's own scar, but Noob cut deeper and took from my son his right eye."

Kaito listens silently. Sareena continues, "That was the last time we saw Noob Saibot. I have cut all ties to the Brotherhood of Shadow; I know nothing about what foul things go on in the Netherrealm with that cult. I am glad to have rid myself of that dark time, but... I know that Noob has not forgotten us." She looks him in the eyes. "When he left, his final words to me were that he would see me again soon."

"You've built a strong clan of warriors here, Sareena. I'm sure that if he ever returns, you will be ready."

She nods, taking some solace in his words.

Kuai takes another sip. "So, where's Smoke? I heard he has a daughter."

"Yes, Vapor. A very shy young girl, so you might not get a chance to meet her unless she approaches you."

"Is that her true name?"

"No, like Tomas, Vapor is her Lin Kuei name. He and Jade named her Andela."

"You know, I've been wondering a lot about that. How did those two get together?"

"They met during the second tournament in Outworld. I cannot honestly say what drew them to each other, but perhaps it was simply love at first sight." She chuckles a bit and says, "You know, it's funny... You saved both Sub-Zero and Smoke from the Cyber Initiative and helped me reunite with the Lin Kuei. If it weren't for you, none of this may have happened." She places her hand on his. "We cannot express our gratitude enough, Kaito. I mean that from the bottom of my heart."

Kaito, having himself recently glimpsed just how far ones actions can go due to the alternate reality adventures that nobody else remembers, can only nod in return. "I try."

She sets down her empty cup. "I believe Tomas is still here somewhere in the temple. I'm sure you could find him if you go looking. Please, make yourself at home."

Kaito nods and rises from the sitting position at the stone table and moves to leave the room.

Kaito wanders the halls, whistling a tune to himself and thinking about Chinese ninja warriors with their hearts so cold.

He finds himself wandering into the center of the temple, a large room with some kind of idol that takes up the majority of one of its walls, that of a woman whose eyes are covered by some kind of cloth. She looks to be some kind of goddess or a mythological figure of great importance; perhaps the temple itself was built in honor of her?

As he walks around the room, he spies something on the other end. There are two large doors made out of metal, looking almost like the doors to a vault, with symbols of dragons on them; one twisting upwards, another downwards. He approaches them and finds that they do not have handles, but rather two imprints where one can place their hand.

The door on the right, with the downward-facing dragon, is open; inside is an empty rack, like the kind one would hang a suit of armor. It is dusty inside, as though it has not been disturbed for a very long time.

Kaito experimentally places his hand in the place on the left door, but nothing happens.

"It has been closed since before the Lin Kuei ever arrived at this temple," a female voice says. Kaito whips around, but sees no one.

"Who's there?"

Kaito looks, scanning his eyes across the room. Something catches his eye and he spies some movement at a nearby pillar. A hand appears from behind it and then a face peaks around; her skin is somewhat pale and her hair is long and grey. Her face is obscured by a grey ninja mask.

"...Hi," she says.

Kaito recognizes her as someone he saw during the erased inter-reality crisis; Vapor.

Kaito holds up a hand and waves at her. "Hello," he says back. "Say, I have to ask, would you---"

She immediately vanishes into small, wispy clouds of smoke.

"---Uh, are you still there?"

There is no response.

Kaito puts his hands back into his pocket and walks forward, slowly looking around the pillar, but she's gone, apparently.

"Huh."

'Sareena wasn't kidding,' he thinks to himself.

"I'll just go and walk around, then," he says to the room, hoping that she's still around to listen. "I don't, uh, you know, I don't bite or anything. If you'd like to talk just let me know."

No reponse.

"...Okay then. Bye?"

He slowly walks out of the room.

Kaito hears the sounds of battle and walks casually into what must be the temple's arena.

Mostly because the ceiling is covered in massive sharp bladed spikes.

A group of Lin Kuei are gathered here in a circle around the arena itself. Kaito hears grunting and shouting as he spies two LIn Kuei fighters sparring against each other. One grapples the other and throws him to the floor before getting him into an armlock. However, the other performs a manuever to escape the slightly weak grab and kicks his opponent in the face before wrapping a leg around his arm and pulling on it, securing the victory by tap out.

Both of them pick themselves up and clasp hands as a sign of brotherly affection and the group around them prepares for the next match.

Kaito stays and decides to watch the next fight. Someone pushes their way past the men and the group goes silent as Frost strides to the center of the ring.

"Alright, who'se next?" she asks.

Most of them avert their eyes.

She punches her hand into her fist. She's clearly eager and out for a good fight. Kaito can't help but wonder why everyone else is staying back.

Kaito clears his throat. "You know, I'm supposed to be taking time off, but I'll take this dance."

The crowd parts to look at him and he and Frost's gazes meet. She looks him up and down as he sheds his jacket and gets to a comfortable combat-ready outfit.

"Who the hell are you?" she asks, shooting daggers with her eyes.

"I'm the one who's going to teach you how to chill," Kaito replies and earns some chuckles from the group.

She clenches her fists and holds them up, creating a cold spark with them. "Let's trade; I'll teach you how to freeze."

They both get into a combat stance and wait to see who makes the first move.

Frost gets impatient and charges in, striking with rapid punches to the midsection. Kaito decides to just feel her out and focuses on dodging and deflecting her blows, blocking each and every attack. She hops back and leads with a kick, which he catches and pushes her back with. She charges in for a grapple but he he uses her momentum against herself and throws her to the side.

She shoots him a nasty look and gets back up with a flourish of ice, attempting to freeze the ground at his feet. Kaito jumps back to dodge the patch of slippery ice, which she leaps onto to carry her forward towards him with the punch, which he catches. He turns her fist in his hands and makes her face her back to him before pushing her away.

The crowd cheers a bit.

Now that he's got a feel for her speed and pace, Kaito approaches her and throws a few simple punches and kicks of his own, shaking off the rust a bit. His attacks are fast, but not meant to truly defeat her.

To her credit, she displays compent blocking and dodging skills, managing to not get hit or take damage from his attacks. She matches him blow for blow as they exchange attacks, but she is growing irritated.

As Kaito blocks a kick from her and then punches her in the midsection, she creates a dagger out of ice and swings it at him!

Kaito's eyes narrow as he catches the knife arm and attacks her wrist, causing her to drop it. He then pulls her close and rapidly strikes her stomach and neck with two powerful punches before dropping her to the ground.

Frost coughs and tries to get back up.

"Enough," Sub-Zero calls out as he enters the room. Every single Lin Kuei member (except Frost) immediately turns to him and bows.

Frost is about to attack Kaito again, but Sub-Zero commands her, "Frost, enough. Our guest did not come here to fight."

"He... He stepped in..." she says with a weakened throat.

"It's true, I did," Kaito replies. He looks down at her and offers her a hand up; she slaps it away. She averts her eyes from Sub-Zero as she stands up and heads for one of the nearby exits.

"Don't mind her," Kuai tells him. "She is difficult. I continue to help her better herself. If it's worth anything, she's much better now than she used to be."

"I hope so," Kaito says. "She's angry."

"At a great many things. Like yourself, she is displaced and struggling to find a path for herself in an unfamiliar time."

Kaito looks in the direction she left from. Perhaps he should try speaking to her later about their shared situation; if anything, at least she'll have someone to relate to perhaps.

Sub-Zero dismisses his warriors and looks at Kaito. "You are still a very good fighter, I see."

"The Jinsei Chamber kept me in very good condition," Kaito replies. "I'm just shaking off the rust, as it were."

"Well, if you're interested in a physical challenge, perhaps you would be interested in accompanying me on a brief expedition."

"Where to?"

"If you would like, I can take you and introduce you to Zian before he returns tomorrow night."

Suddenly, there is a flash of grey fog and Smoke appears. "Hello, Kaito."

"What the--?! Where were you? How long were you hanging around for?"

The man smirks. While he's kept himself cleanly shaven, he definitely does look a bit older, particularly the lines around his eyes. "Sorry. It's just good practice. I just arrived, I swear."

Sub-Zero crosses his arms and smirks, in on a joke that Kaito is not privy to.

Kaito approaches Smoke and gives him a hug, careful not to inhale any wafts that come off of him. After all, secondhand Smoke can kill.

"It's good to see you again," Kaito says.

"You as well. How long have you been awake?"

"Just a few days. Hung out with Johnny and his daughter. Speaking of which, I ran into yours but she vanished before we could have a conversation."

"Yes, she's a bit wary of strangers," Smoke admits. "But I'm certain she'll warm up to you. It just takes time with her."

"How's Jade doing, you dog you?" Kaito asks, elbowing the grey ninja.

He gives a small chuckle. "Currently visiting the royal family in Edenia. I'll send for her so she can come see you. Unless you plan on going there?"

"Eventually. I need to pick up my boat."

As he picks up his jacket, he remarks to Sub-Zero, "It's just crazy, Kuai. I wake up and eveyone's got all these kids. Kenshi's got one, you've got one, Smoke's got one, Johnny's got one... Who else?"

"Jax has a daughter."

"Right, I haven't met her yet," Kaito says as they leave the arena. "Anyone else?"

"I believe Kurtis and Nightwolf both retired and started families of their own. If I am not mistaken, I believe Kung Lao may have a daughter..."

"What? With who? I thought Shaolin we're about that."

"Tell that to Liu Kang."

"Oh, does he have one with Kitana?"

"No, surprisingly. I believe they are waiting."

"How about anyone else? Maybe others from other realms?"

"I am not caught up in the personal lives of everyone from across the realms, Kaito."

"Fair enough, no harm in asking though."

Kuai takes him to a place where they keep various different kinds of gear and outfits him with clothing to help him survive the cold environment. Some thicker clothing, a pack with gear in it including pitons, picks and some rope and some specialized climbing shoes.

The two of them step out into the wilderness outside the temple and proceed towards the mountain.

On the other hand she did murder a little girl and her original body out of misplaced anger and frustration.
And took the little girl's body as a host after nurturing her and basically pulling the surrogate mom routine. I wouldn't be horribly surprised if it was her plan all along. That doesn't seem the sort of thing you decide off the cuff.

To make matters worse I'm pretty sure when we had a talk about the kind of shit she didn't want to do or be forever ago...shit like this was at the top of the list.
