Good afternoon, dear /tg/. I have nothing going on today, and the thread last night seemed to generate some interested.

I would request that we vote for something a little more engaging than humans, elves, or dwarves.

First race to three votes, and first environment to three votes.
>>
>>44564038

Draconians, Islands.
>>
>>44564038
Unseen, ruins.
Brainwash everyone, rule the world from the shadows without killing.
>>
>>44564165
>>44564189

If no further votes appear in the next twenty minutes or so, I'll flip a coin for races between these two, and use the other's environment, if that's amiable to the both of you.
>>
I feel like going a bit more thoughtful and diplomatic. What about gnomes? Develop tech, make alliances and kick ass. Ruins.

We research changing appearances and suggestion early on, then infiltrate our enemies and undermine their leaderships, or scare them shitless giving scouts and hunters visions of dragons and dangerous shit until they leave their homes.
>>
>>44564444
That headfluff isn't remotely binding
>>
A cold light filters down through the broken stone of the ancient ruins in which ten Unseen have made their home. Memories bubble to the surface of your thoughts. Empires spanning thousands of miles. Millions of slaves laboring to bring about your great and dark works. The time of the Unseen has come once again.

Many of the collective are willing to follow, at least for now, save for three.

Choose your leader, first to three.

>Xaliel Darkborne
One of the collective's two illusionists, and undoubtedly the strongest. Under his leadership, the minds of the inferiors will easily be consumed with dark magics.

>Markus Mindwaste
The other illusionist, and unquestionably the most intelligent of the three. His wisdom would more easily be passed between the members of the collective.

>Vlar Blacktounge
While not possessing the innate illusionist abilities of the other two potential leaders, his ability to bend the will of others with word alone is legend.
>>
>>44564764
>Markus Mindwaste
>>
>>44564764
I would choose the second one, but how does the leader's wisdom factor in when we are actually the ones calling the shots?

>>44564867

So is the intelligence exclusively a teaching bonus or does it benefit things like technological research as well?
>>
>>44564902
Indirectly, I would assume.
Having better taught citizens leads to faster technological development.
>>
The three face off for a moment, not a single word exchanged. The runes and tomes affixed to his belt and tattered robes signify that Markus Mindwaste is by far the most qualified to lead, and the seven stand behind him.

Seeing how the tables have turned, Vlar Blacktounge shifts his position, and stands behind Markus as well. Xaliel Darkborne does not seem at all complacent with this development, however. Eldritch power blooms in his hands, blackening the air around it. There are more than enough in the collective to overwhelm him.

How does Markus deal with Xaliel?
>Kill him. The risk of him usurping is too great.
>Dominate him. The will of the collective should be enough to constrain him, and his abilities could be useful.
>Attempt to placate him. Reason can still prevail. [Roll 1D100]
>Exile. Perhaps he will go willingly.
>Write-in?
>>
>>44564996

Dominate him.
>>
>>44564902

Pretty much as this anon says: >>44564936
It just changed the flavor of how I'll do posts. Picking an intelligent leader leads to intelligent options by default, but didn't take them off the table for others. It's just the motivations for undertaking them will be presented as more logic-based. I wouldn't worry about it.
>>
Use Vlar Blacktounge's unparalleled talent with words to convince him to side with us. Offering him a high authority position like head of Illusionists may do the job.

>>44564996
>>Attempt to placate him. Reason can still prevail. [Roll 1D100]

Usually it's best of 3 rolls, with crit failure/success at 1/100 Average tends to be.. average 50 and lead to uninspiring results. Also rolls usually come after a choice is voted, because people might change their mind and vote for any retarded option if it has a 100 on it, or any good one if it has a low roll.

This. OP rolling after the choices are made is better.

Markus and Vlad consult for a moment. Xaliel is more than happy to wait while his mana builds. Vlad steps forward.

"Xaliel Darkborne, your powers are self-evident. Bow to the wisdom of Markus Mindwaste, join with the collective, and attain the exalted position which you deserve."

Xaliel considers for a moment, and looks to the other nine. Despite his formidable powers, there are more than enough here to overwhelm him. The only thing worse than having to begin the great works alone would be to compete with them, or do so unwillingly. The dark flames surrounding his skeletal hands extinguish.

"I serve no creature under the black sky... but I will submit to the will of the collective. For now."

>Ally gained, Xaliel Darkborne

Tension within the collective put at rest for the moment, Markus considers what to do next. It has been many thousands of years since the collective last reached their hands out to grasp the world, and all that remains of their great fortress are broken, unfamiliar ruins.

Xaliel trudges off to his own section of the castle, while the others set to work searching for anything of use in their immediate environment, and return with their reports in short order.

It would appear the years have not been kind to the fortress. Many sections are entirely blocked with ruin, while others lay open and gaping to the elements. There is still a great abundance of raw stone for building and repair, if labor was acquired to complete it.

The Great Hall seems as if it would more than serve their needs for shelter at this time, only a small section of the roof having collapsed in, and an adequate allotment of fireplaces for heating and cooking.

>Resource added: Shelter [0,0 - Fortress, Great Hall]

The castle gardens appear to be overgrown and unkempt, but some of the trees still bear fruit. There should be enough food to sustain the Collective for a short period of time.

>Resource added: Food [0,0 - Apples/Pears ]

One of the Collective returns from the dungeons, and reports sounds of activity, some sort of vague chattering. Unwilling to risk his valuable existence, he returned to report before venturing deeper in to explore.

Three of the lesser members of the Collective are sent to explore the noises emanating from the dank chambers below the fortress. The dungeons are expansive to say the least, and bones upon bones of forgotten prisoners are scattered in a plethora of cells.

They report back there are still some delightfully functioning torture implements to be found, but more importantly they discovered a squirming mass of larva-like creatures digging through the stone there. They seemed to be externally digesting a goblin with some sort of acidic compound. The goblin was still squirming in agony as they watched. Several other goblins emerged from a nearby tunnel, and burned them away with torches, before both parties retreated into the maw of their respective enterances.

A couple of your better mages are sent to collapse the Larva tunnel, which they accomplish with ease. On closer examination, the very stone appears to have been melted away to form the aperture, so this solution is likely nothing but temporary.

The party of three sent to explore the goblin tunnel returns with good news. The tunnel the goblins had dug connects to otherwise blocked parts of the lower dungeons, where they appear to have taken up residence. The cells seem to form individual houses. A scout saw the party, and sounded an alarm, causing about thirty goblins to scatter into various smaller tunnels which no doubt connect to other places within the castle.

Markus and Vlad descend into the depths to discover the band of goblins fully armed for war. Of course, in this case, fully armed equates to some crude clubs and shoddy bows with stone arrows, but the largest has a rusted iron breastplate on. He glares menacingly at what he assumes is a delegation of five goblins from a different tribe, and steps forward.

"Yew dum basserds run into wrong hole. GO AWAY!"

No doubt this would have a goblin of any caliber shaking in his tiny boots, but Markus and Vlad are less impressed. Vlad steps forward.

"Our tribe now. You join, or else."

The goblin roars with rage, and saunters forward, swinging a stone club. Under his breath, Vlad casts a simple spell which makes the impressionable goblin believe that the club is red-hot, and he gives it the appearance to match. The lead goblin drops it with a holler, and the rest of the goblins collectively intact a gasp. Magic is a sign of great power among them, and they all nearly instantly capitulate to their new leaders.

The old warboss is less enthusiastic, and is still glowering and muttering.

Not much. You've gathered some fruit from the trees in the garden, and there's plenty of stone you can work with. If you move the goblins in there, you'll need to designate room for them as well.

The many tunnels the goblins have dug over the years have led to otherwise inaccessible areas of the fortress. They're a little confused why the Unseen can't follow them, but "a little confused" is the description of the typical goblin state of mind in any case.

They make several important discoveries, including an armory that's mostly intact, and the library. The armory is buried under a mountain of rubble that would take a week to move, where as the library is separated from a hall by a wall of rubble that would take only a day or so to shift.

The new goblin slaves are quickly put to work clearing out the path to the library, while Markus checks in on Xaliel. The recluse appears to have taken up residence in one of the southern towers. The stairs are rickety, but manageable. When he arrives, Xaliel is working on his grimore. He scowls.

"Yes, what do you want?"
"To ensure you are not working against the collective."
"Of course not."

He taps the ancient, human-skin bound book.

After a moment of careful consideration, Markus nods. Continue your work, brother. He descends the steps again, and looks out upon his works. Currently, the Goblins are busy clearing out the tunnel. A couple of the females are busy tending to the children. The Unseen are working on projects of their own, some setting up ritual circles, some scrawling in grimores.

Markus directs Vlad and the Unseen to join him in consul. After a few hours, it's clear that Vlad is a better mage, but Markus is a better teacher. By their forces unite, they are able to make significant progress with the rest of the Unseen.

The night falls quickly upon the Fortress. The full moon hangs heavy and fat over the sky, and a chilling howl splits the night. Screams in the distance to the north. The Goblins appear to have ceased work for the night, and are heading to their dungeon burrow.

Post unseen sentries. Hopefully with a bit of illusion magic, we can stay one step ahead of any trespassers.

Is it insane if we use one of the big 3 as a sentry?
With a good Illusion spell one of them could appear to be a massive feral creature and scare any trespassers.

As the night wears on, everything appears to be sanguine in the night - save for the punctuation of the occasional scream to the north, and rabid howls.

However, a few hours before dawn, the sentry suddenly notes that not all of the screams are coming from the north. The Unseen rush to the Goblin dungeons, to find that all of the children, all but two of the females, and half the males. The rest are fighting off some sort of six-legged chitinous creatures, who are spewing acid.

The Goblins have driven them away, with torches, but the damage has been dealt.

[ Thanks for the great game guys. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, post them here, I'll check them in a minute before I leave for Vodkahalla ]
