You're starting to become frustrated by your slow progress. If this were anything else, you'd have figured out some trick by now, or a work-around that got more results for your effort. It's like twisting a deer's leg off with your bare hands; sure you COULD and it looks impressive, but it's generally more efficient to make a couple more cuts and pop the damn thing out nice and simple. With magic, you can do things that openly defy the natural order of the world, but every one of them has to be done the hard way. You remember Rhea's talk about prices for things and reflect that maybe THIS is the price for magic at all... Trying to work around it would upset some delicate balance and... Well, you know better than possibly anyone alive all about how THAT turns out.

Despite your frustration, you are making incremental improvements. All you really need now a little understanding of just what it is you're doing, or a bit more power. Either way, you're well on your track to being more than just a dabbler. You can even make three stones dance in a circle above your hand now. This, obviously, has the effect of making Noh think you're the most amazing person to have ever lived. Your son's staying kind of short for his age, but he thinks the world of you and apparently can't take his eyes off you whenever you're in the same house.

It is now early spring. You have enough food to last your family until the start of summer, but by midsummer, two will go hungry.

What do you do?

The clan seems largely content. Nothing has disturbed them in some time, so they are secure in their current situation. Beren assure you she has no complaints either, but has a tone that makes you sure something is bothering her.

You gather what support you can, including your own children and start to try and co-ordinate an expansion to the fields.

You have 15 labour points available. Your land is unsurveyed
>Small field - 5 points - 2 land
>Large field - 12 points - 6 land

Sorry it's lackluster. I'll try and pick things up as we go, but I'm not having a good day.

Let's just go for the large field and keep some labor points floating possibly help with speeding the cultivation since the efforts are focused on one area

'Floating' labour points are wasted, as they refresh every turn. They don't speed anything along.

>Large field - 12 points - 6 land
Also, if we can, use the remaining points to get started on a small field.

>>44569385
No rush man, it's a Monday, take as long as you need.
>>
>>44569385
Don't worry RWB it'll pick up soon.
Also Put 3 small fields.
>>
>>44569385
Is this true RWB >>44569550
That you can use the points left over to start a small field? If so I'll support it
>>
>>44569550
>>44569662
Yes. The way points are spent is that any projects that can be completed in a single turn, are, starting with the cheapest (unless you specify a different priority). Points are then carried over and applied until there are no further projects that can be completed in a single turn. Any remaining points are then split evenly among all remaining projects currently ongoing. These points are stored and the project is partially completed, until a later date.

Is that clear enough?

And I wasn't worrying about you guys. I was talking about me. Hopefully I can bully myself into typing more and faster for you. Giving you guys a good thread will literally be the only good thing to happen for me today.
>>
>>44569743
It's clear.
Don't worry about speed, just take your time.
>>
>>44569743
Thanks, that cleared it up for me. Time to make super complicated building queues just to fuck with the system :^)

On the topic of speed though; seriously, don't rush yourself. In my opinion, there hasn't been a single bad thread in this quest, just don't actively put off writing and everything will be fine. Also, at least in the next couple of hours, there probably won't be as many votes due to people not being off work yet, so just settle for 3 or 4 for the time being.
>>
Uhm, if I'm right, votes called for a large field and a start on a small? Fucking with the priority order already, I see. Okay then!
>>
Beren is quite good at dealing with people isn't she? We should tell her our plan of unifying the tribes and ask her help to gain influence.
>>
The small garden patch you first learned to grow crops with just won't do any more. The abundance of seeds at least doesn't raise a problem, as you lay down and direct the closing off of a new, much larger field. It will feed not only your own family, but others as well, with you taking a share of the grain. With the land here being so perfectly suited for the wild grain, making a field is largely an effort of fencing it off to keep out smaller animals that might eat the young seeds and shoots; and in digging out the larger stones and weeds that might otherwise choke the plants. With many willing hands however, the task goes smoothly enough. It goes so well in fact that you get halfway through another, smaller field, before mid-spring!

There's no sign of the herders yet, but they, they typically arrive in the valley in late spring, or early summer. You do have a few unexpected visitors from the strangers however, trading hides and animal bone in exchange for grain. They seem to be quite taken with the idea of farming and even make inquiries about adopting it themselves. The only issue is that they need to get much of the seeds from you, which in turn means going via Mesut. To his credit, Mesut doesn't horde much of the trade goods the strangers bring. Rather, he shares them out among the clan, giving furs, leather, horn and bone evenly and generously. Even your family gets a share of the wealth! In even better news, the hrerds of aurochs seem to slowly be recovering. By summer, it should be safe to hunt them again, without fear of depleting their numbers too greatly.

You have gained a few animal bones and tanned hides. You have brought enough land under cultivation to provide three more units of food.
>>
>>44571566
Possible. There's no reason at all to rule it out...

Could we start to send out feelers for what the other clans are doing, maybe if we manage to do thema favor or two we could all unite?

I say we start sending our wife out, when ever she is free. Say in the summer, to "friendlies" since she is a social butterfly and all. After we have this chat, with her. So she can make us certain connections we may need.

The smaller field provides much less food than the larger variety, but obviously requires much less work and space to set up. The task in fact so brief that you soon find yourself with a great deal of free time. Time you decide to put to good use, breaching the subject of your grand plan with your wife. You're... Not really sure how she'll take it.

The pair of you sit in the sun outside your home. It's amazing how much you notice now that your sight is gone... It's not nearly enough to make up for the lack of colours and shapes, but you're so acutely aware of the warmth of the sun; the soft sounds of life in your little community; the tangy smell of woodsmoke on the air, from fires that are, by tradition and practicality, never allowed to go out... You're even more aware of the subtle tension in Beren's shoulder as you gently squeeze it. Is she still upset at you continuing to use magic?
"Beren?" you ask quietly.
She looks up at you from the grain she's diligently grinding into flour to become your evening meal. If only you could see the stray hair she blows out of her face, or the beads of sweat on her forehead as she looks up at you...
"I have news," you say quietly. "There might yet be a way for the gods to restore my sight." You quickly outline your adventure atop the ridgeline that day and do your best to describe the benevolence you felt when your mind touched that Other Place.

Beren right now: [Desire to know more intensifies]
>>
>>44573324
Beren is quiet for a moment, then sighs, turning back to her work. "I will have to make an offering to Rhea," she says.
You're shocked briefly. News like that, a quest like the one before you and that's all she has to say? "That's... It?" you ask.
"Why wouldn't it be?" Beren shrugs. Your husband senses are immediately tingling. You don't know how or why, but you're suddenly on very dangerous ground here.
"I thought you'd be happy..?" you venture, only to have the knocking, pounding sound of Beren's pestle and mortar stop.
"Happy? Oh yes, I suppose I should be. Regaining your sight would be a wonder." You start to break out in a cold sweat, as her voice gets dangerously sweet. "After all, once you've recovered, everyone's better for it, aren't we? And you can go right back to fooling with things you can't control, getting in over your head and lucking your way out of it!"

Danger! You cast around for one of the dogs to help get you out of here, but they're keeping their distance... Probably laughing at you, the traitors.
"Not that I expect you to honestly worry about anything like that!" your wife continues, now leaning towards you, causing you to tip back in place more and more. "After all, just because you've got in trouble using that sorcery twice hardly means it'll happen a third time, does it? So what if the second time took your eyes; it's not like you'll DIE from it, right?"
Her hand holding the heavy stone pestle is dangerously close to something sensitive. You go to try and make an excuse, but she shushes you with a finger on your lips.

Danger Trym Robinson, Danger!
>>
>>44573461
"Trym, I know damn well what kind of man you are and you know just as well that that is exactly what I love about you and what holds me to you tighter than rawhide ropes..." The pestle comes down, barely a finger from the fork of your legs, eliciting an instinctive, cut-off squawk of fear. "But I swear, if your fooling around with magic leaves me, Noh, Sera and Ebba alone, I will find a way to bring you back just so I can kill you over again." Her voice is sweeter than honey and brighter than sunshine. "Do you understand, my love?"
"Perfectly! Perfectly, love!"
"Wonderful!" She kisses your lips with just enough force for you to lose your balance and pitch over backwards.

"Now that that's settled," Beren smiles happily. "How exactly are you planning on getting every clan in the valley to live and work together? I mean, I know exactly what you're capable of, the kind of person you are, but it'll be hard to convince anyone else that a blind man is a better chief than, say, Myslik or Mesut. Unless you have another idea?" You get the impression she's glancing over at you.
"Well... I was going to ask for your help, actually, sweetie?" you reply from the floor.
"I'd be happy to," she responds. "But dear... Do you need to be the chief, or did Rhea simply ask you to bring the clans together? More to the point... What do YOU wish for me to do?"

What do you want Beren to do for you?

How'd we do with the magic? Also throw in that We plan on getting our eye sight back. Convince them that, we're going to be getting that healed. They've seen us heal people before.
>>Try to convince people to accept you as chief, among your own clan and others
>>
>>44573747

I think the best way to go about this is binding the clans spiritually. We each have our own way of surviving which means that we can't just prove that we're the best hunters or fishers etc. But what we can do is create a council of the spiritually inclined and essentially form a Godsmoot. As that one with the best grip on magic and the gods (that we know of) we are the best voice for drawing them together with the temptation of knowledge we can offer and more than likely they will have stuff to teach us as well. This Godsmoot also has the bonus effect of providing a way for each clan to air grievances through their Priest-Ambassadors. It's a shame that we do not know anything more flashy magic wise to get peoples attention.

"Hmm... Me as chief might not be a bad idea," you muse, chuckling and sitting up. Beren helps you from halfway and kisses you again, as you both quietly laugh over the idea. "No... You're right; a blind man isn't a chief anyone would follow... Unless..."
"Unless what, my lover?" Beren asks, setting down her pestle and swinging herself into your lap, one arm over your shoulders. "You know how much I love it when you talk about stuff like this~"
"Well, I might not be able to bring the clans together as a hunter or a leader," you explain, running your fingers through her dark hair, "But I'm the one with magic-" You catch her sudden darkening of mood from the way she tenses up. "Which I am going to be VERY careful with-!" you hastily add, "And more to the point, I'm the one who talks to the gods directly."
"What are you thinking of?"
"A meeting under the authority of the gods. Mesut or Myslik or whoever can have the goods and the hunt and so on, but as long as I have the gods on my side, well... On the one hands, people are scared of what they might do and it'll be my duty to keep them content. On the other, the blessings of the gods could help anyone."
"So long as they agree to play by your rules, they'll have the benefits of you and any other god-speakers, but if they try to act out, you'll just revoke the gods protection from them," Beren finishes your thoughts for you. "I love it!"

It'll take some time in order to set things up. Beren might well be able to help in getting people on your side, but you both agree that this will really need a personal touch, to say nothing of the benefits actually showing off some magic will bring. The next time you visit another clan to gain their support, Beren will accompany you and start working her own kind of magic to further your plans for a single tribe, united before the gods.
>>

>>44575449

The last time we tried any magic that impressive it almost killed us twice. And I am relatively certain anyone can talk to the gods, we just have a stronger connection to them. If all goes well we will be playing this game for a long time. We don't need to be king now we need to secure our legacy for our children and being the first priest is a pretty damn good way to do that.

I have noticed that. Still, who said it'd be so easy?

It is now early summer.

The fields have finished being planted and will be harvested in late fall. They should provide 32 units of food for you. Every person in your family eats one unit of food, per half-season.

The herders have arrived on the far side of the river, guiding their goats to wherever there is new growth.
Tip: You could probably try for domestication on your own, but help from the herders would speed things along a great deal.

Knowing that you'll soon need to really demonstrate your magical abilities and the blessings of the gods, you promptly push yourself back into training your magic. Moving things with your thoughts is becoming more natural to you and closing wounds only slightly less so. You can't re-grow severed body parts yet (you don't even want to contemplate what might happen if you try), but restoring flesh and bone to its pristine form, in all but the most dire cases, you're fairly sure you can cope. You've not had even a tingle from the black markings of magic over-use either. By the time mid-summer approaches, you also develop a new use for your magic. You can't 'see', not really, but you can 'feel' things up to two arms lengths away, getting an indistinct picture of where things are, using light touches from your mind. At least you won't end up walking into things anymore, even without your pack's help.

Your training has finally managed to pay off. No longer a dabbler, messing with things you don't understand; you feel like, at last, you've taken a first real step towards mastering magic. If nothing else, you fully appreciate how far you still have to go.

You have gained a level in the Shaman job class!

We should make it ourself. We're the only one we know of that has made a magical item. Even if that magical item has been gathering dust
I wonder if Soqed would be willing to fill a gem with his power as a focus for our staff.

Wooo, shaman get. Thanks for the thread!

I'm glad uniting the clans as chief won, in part because I think the recognition that will come with that will only help in attaining godhood. Not out of hubris, mind, but to provide humanity with their own representative in something like a Godsmoot.

also maybe Nila will take us back if she knows we are like her and thus cannot die
>>
>>44576747
Now that we're a shaman, we should improve relations with the sheep herders. I say we should head over there, and offer our services as a healer (healing their sheep and doing some general labor)

Also, now that we can see, does that lower the blindness penalty? Instead of 1 die, we can use one?
>>
>>44580131
*we can use two
whoops
>>
>>44580131
we can 'see' with magic, but not well. Although I agree that as we improve that 'sight' the blindness penalty should lessen
>>
>>44580131
I agree that we should improve relations with the herders. Show them we don't mean harm.
>>
>>44580333
I feel we should intermarry with them, to tie them to our tribe and more importantly to us
>>
>>44580366
we could do that too, though I agree that showing that our magic can help will help too (especially since we scared them with our last display) It'll add some legitimacy to our claim as chief of the tribes in the valley via our shamanism
>>
>>44580438
If i remember, we can activate magic in others because it is already active in us; we will lose control if we give it to others but it is a valuable tool for a dowry, so to speak.
>>
>>44580497
oh, I never meant give them magic, I meant using our magic to show them that we do have control over it and that we can do good things with it.
>>
>>44580585
I know i am just saying for future conversations
>>
>>44580497
that's true, we can do both. We can tell them (once we've impressed them) that if mate with those of our blood they have a higher chance of using such magic
>>
>>44580615
My point is that we should not do that, unless we can get them to join our "clan". otherwise in a few generations all tribes would be mages.

By clan i mean our family not our tribe. Problem is that in our culture we form new clans every generation. I feel we need to take the method of inheritance used for a time. Spreading all of our property between descendants but favouring one whom shall be our heir

You can try

>>44582275
Your sight isn't all that great. You can see enough to not fall over most things, or walk into trees, but beyond that, you're still blind as ever.
>>
>>44582277
we tried that once and almost died, i feel we are closer to being able to do that but i would advise against it
>>
>>44582277
Doesn't sound bad. Since we can "see" around us for like a foot around us.
We can throw out fish indivdually, with our experience + magic. But we may be better off waiting a training or two more.
>>
>>44582466
I think we can do it as long as we don't try to take in too many fishes.
>>
>>44582573
True, so long as we don't try to fish all of the river at once we will be fine. We should just take it one fish at a time
>>
Sorry all. I've been prepping for a game I'm GMing tonight.

Counted and writing.
>>
When the hell did the food run out? Why does it vanish so fast? You need to get your girls helping you out, fast, or you're simply not going to be able to produce enough to feed your family! Come to that, you bring them along to help you out at the river. If nothing else, they're an extra pair of hands. Sera actually shows considerable talent for spearing the fish for you, but Ebba is... A problem.
"I tried telling them why we need them, but they won't listen," she sighs, dangling her feet in the water. "They all just swim away. I know they don't want to be eaten, but we have to eat, so..." It doesn't really seem like her heart is in it. "Fish aren't like people, or the dogs, they're... Not really very 'alive'," she frowns. "So it's okay to eat them. And aurochs and stuff are hunted, so that's okay too. But they won't see it that way. Fish are really stupid." Her hand flashes out and darts into the river, pulling out a wriggling fish by its tail. "I could help like this, dad? Or I could maybe ask mom for help?"

For your part, your touch-sight isn't nearly good enough. The glancing, rippling surface of the water deflects your attempts to see the fish and you're forced to try tickling them out by hand. Then again... You are more capable with magic now... Maybe if you were cautious about it, you might be able to help your catch?

You decide against the risk of using magic. You've only just started to get a handle on it and the last time you tried to use it to fish, you ended up flat on your back and were picking fish guts out of your hair for hours. Instead, you simply focus on the mundane methods. With Sera and Ebba helping you, you don't do too badly, but still simply do not have enough for the season. Someone is going to have to go hungry now and then into autumn, you all will feel the pinch. Without help, your lack of sight may yet see your entire family go hungry, or even force your family to disband and dissolve back into those that sired you.

You are short by one person's share of food. Who will go hungry this turn?

Healing for food as a trade or as good will.
Doesn't look good when you want to be chief but you can't even feed your self. While it may not hurt us, long run won't help. Trading for such may help, especially if other tribes hear of it. They can bring injured tribe members to us and bring their specialty of food or tech to trade. If we save a life or something.
>>
>>44584916
>You
>Offer services as a healer in exchange for food

>>44586325
I disagree, showing we can heal with magic could only improve our standing in the clan
>>
>>44586864
Fuck, the way I worded that was idiotic.
I mean that to do it for donations will make us look bad. As in making us look incompetent, not being able to feed ourself.
To trade healing for food is good. Yes, I agree. Being known as a healer will only help us.
>>
>>44586953
I mean, if we spend a season healing it's only fair to be compensated for it since that's time we could spend hunting or fishing. No one does anything for free. I don't think that wohld mame us look bad
>>
>>44587051
*would, make
Damn you, you monstrous digits
>>
>>44587051
It wouldn't be as impressive as not asking for food would, I agree with sarge.
>you
>>
>>44587132

I think I have a partial solution, it doesn't get us food but it does spin the situation. If anyone asks simply say that fasting (may not even be a word in our language yet) helps strengthen our connection to magic and the spirits and we're doing it for the tribe
>>
>>44587159
Good call!
>>
Next time we fish, we HAVE to use magic. There's no way we can support ourselves blind wtihout at least a little assistance from our magic. It doesn't need to be a fish tornado, but yes we can't avoid it
>>
>>44587653
"Hey Nila remember that time I used magic multiple times and almost died both times? Remember how you told me not to do stupid shit like this and I did it anyway, and then you didn't talk to me for months? Well I'm gonna give it another go, brb.
>>
>>44587653
I want to use magic. But I think having better magic first should be a priority. So we don't strain ourselves and we get a bigger haul.

We should have shaman, fisherman and leader active.
>>
>>44587829
It is not the same thing, I even said no fish tornado that we pulled before. It wasn't the act of catching fish with magic that hurt us, but catching so many at once. One or two fish shouldn't hurt us. Also, we'll fucking starve
>>
>>44587829
>months
It was four years
>>
>>44587957
That's the thing though, we couldn't control it. That's why it became fishnado in the first place. Our safest bet is to provide a service in exchange for food, that way we don't starve and there's less of a chance of us blacklining.
>>
>>44587865
yeah but wouldnt catching fish in the river be helpful in training our magic and also helpful in using in training to use that magic to catch fish?
>>
>>44588064
We couldn't control catching a whole school, no, but no one is suggesting we catch a whole school of fish.
>>
>>44588101
At that point it becomes less of a food gathering activity and much more of a training exercise. If we were to do something like this I would specifically vote for "train our magic by trying to catch fish", and specify that it's not an attempt to gather a shitload of food.
>>
RWB, to settle all the bitching, can you please tell us if catching a small amount of fish with magic will hurt us (or hell, just one)? Everyone is scared we'll die trying to catch fish and so we'll never use it unless you tell us it's safe to start small while fishing
>>
>>44588152
they were literally suggesting we use magic to catch fish for the use of feeding our family, witch is made up of 5 people. It's safe to assume we'd be attempting to get a large haul.
>>
>>44588189
It's not that we'll never use it, It's just that is incredibly dangerous and stupid to go out and try to fish, for the purpose of gathering food, with our magic.
>>
>>44588382
I think we should practice our sight some more before getting to using it here, so as to be able to really use it
>>
>>44588193
Last time we tried to get fish for a lot more people.
>>
>>44588611
we should
>>
>>44588611
That's the point by winter or fall we should be alright if we continue to train magic. Our sight, healing and precision should all increase.
At that point we could even farm with magic. Better than a regular farmer as we could feel the plant underneath the soil as well. And see everything.
Also we had 36 units of food recently. And it all left all at once. So possibly a mistake or we need to increase the harvest. But fishing should be good too since no one wants to live off one thing
>>
>>44589490
We consume five food per month, one for us, one for our wife and three for our three children. Since there are twelve months between our harvests we need to have seventy food per harvest at least, so we must double our food production for all intents and purposes assuming we don't want to have to hunt in order to live.
>>
>>44589969
By this logic 36 food lasts us seven months with enough left to feed one person for more one month

Well I suck at doing horror, it seems. Any tips?

Once again, you consign yourself to the endless, gnawing hunger of a time without food. The fact that the rest of your family is eating is enough to keep you strong through the many days where you swear a rat has crept down your throat and is frantically trying to claw its way out through your belly. You've known hunger before, while settled and much, much more often when your clan still roamed, but knowing you've at least provided for your family keeps you with just enough strength to go on.

It is now early fall. Your family is once again without food. What will you do?

>>
>>44593015
I support that Elia should help us.
We can practice magic after the harvest.
>>
>>44592304
horror is really hard to invoke in a roleplaying game. A lot of it has to do with atmosphere (such as low lighting, effective use of music), and occasionally taking away player agency or putting them in an impossible scenarios. Also, make use of impossible space! Put them in scenarios that bring question to where they are or if they are real. Lastly, prepare for the likely scenario that your players won't be scared, and that's okay. If you can walk away at having at least unnerved them, then you did great.

Here's an actual play podcast I listened that takes advantage of a lot of these tips:

You can produce a grand total of 32 units of food every harvest time, enough for half a year and a little extra, given your current concerns. The harvest comes in every year in late fall and any extra fields cultivated after late spring will not count for that year's harvest.

Elia is mostly concerned with keeping himself and Galit fed and happy, but as he is part of your family, he'll assist when he's asked. Don't assume he's just a drone or employee who'll work every time, but he is family and especially in light of your blindness, he's fairly inclined to help when asked.
>>

I think so, though maybe we could practice down by the river, maybe do a little water bending (like creating small tendrils out of the water), sensing for fish and other wildlife. That kind of thing.
