Late time on Military Magical Girl: You, Matsushita Miyako, student-soldier and mage, went to class with your squad mates. You had a quiz on tactics and strategy, answered questions in Practical Magic and Device Application, and had lunch with your squad leader, Fujimura Maiya. When you returned back to your squad's room, you found out that the next prelim match will be taking place in three days.

You woke up to the sound of keyboard keys clacking in the room. You rolled out of bed and rolled your eyes to see Maiya on his laptop, eyes glued to the bright LED lights.
"Wha-what are you doing this early?" You whisper, trying not to wake anyone else up.
Maiya doesn't say anything except turn the computer towards you. It's the school archive file on Squad 891.
"Research." He says. He voice is the same as the dull tone he spoke in yesterday at lunch.
"This early?"
"Our match is in three....two days. No time to waste."
"Don't we have classes tomorrow?"
"Classes are suspended for those with a match notice."
"Huh..." You walk over to his computer on his bed. "Find out anything?"
He nods in the darkness. "Yeah. Naese Hidemi, Furuta Toge, Yamato Misato, Shigematsu Ogi, and Yoshino Ayako. Those are our opponents for tomorrow."
"Any idea of their magic types?"
"No."
"What about ranks?"
"Ranks III, IV, II, III, and III respectively."

"We're completely outmatched then huh?" You say, a bad feeling coming up from your stomach. You feel Maiya put his hand on your shoulder in the darkness.
"Don't worry." He says. "We'll figure it out somehow. Trust me."
"I hope so." You stumble back over to your bed but stray thoughts kept you awake, and not just of the coming prelim.

You remembered the first day of middle school. Kouta was heading off to third grade and your mom and dad wished you good luck. You tried to go about school as if it was still elementry school. You tried to go about your life as if nothing had changed. But something felt off. Something was missing. As the hours went by, you found yourself feeling some lonliness. It was a small feeling so you pushed it away, even through your lunch that you ate alone. As you were leaving school. You heard the sounds of shinai hitting against shinai, wood against wood. It was a sound that would become familiar to you in the coming months and years. Curious, you entered the dojo and became awestruck by the people inside. Something about it resonated with you, a feeling that you hadn't felt in a long time. Soon, the rest of the club members stopped their sparring and looked at you. Your face felt red and suddenly realizing where you were, you bowed deeply and said, "I'm sorry!" And got ready to move out of the dojo. A person took off their helmet though and shook her hair, revealing a soft face with glasses and long hair.
"Are you intrested in joining the kendo club?"
You accepted.

You don't really know what had brought up such a memory. Maybe it was the fear of injury again from fighting. Maybe it was your conversation with Maiya yesterday. But you suddenly felt the hole in your stomach grow deeper. Your eyes began to well up and you began to cry. Soon noticing, you heard Maiya come over to you.
"What is it, Miyako?" He asked.

[]N-nothing.

Ow and btw QM, didn't we fill out our aplication form with

While I know that the flashback is clearly set earlier than what our situation was during our little forced kidnapping recruitment.
Or was the form the we signed just completely fiction.. Like I know that we could lie about what education level we had but still.

Or are was our fathers death simply between the time the flashback takes place and our kidnapping?

"N-nothing." You say, putting your voice at a whisper in order to not disturb anyone else.
"O-oh ok." Maiya went back to her bed and you tried to get some sleep.

When everyone else was awake Maiya gathered them around for a strategy meeting.
"First we'll go around and see what everyone else knows about the squad we'll be fighting in two days." He had printed out the profiles for each student and layed them across a table he had set up in the middle of the room.
Mio pointed to Yamato Misato. "Wait. I know this person." Misato had short hair that was braided in the back. She wore glasses but nevertheless had a pure and bright smile in her picture. "I heard she's a time magic user. Just a rumor though."
"Time?" You asked, dumbstruck.
"Yeah. And on top of it she's a Rank II. A master swordsman as well."
Silence engulfed the rest of the team.
"Well, what about Shigematsu?" Said Maiya, pointing the enemy squad leader.
"I've sparred against him in karate." Said Kazue.
"Is he good?"
"Better than us that's for sure. Don't know what his magic type is but he's one of the best in the 13th in terms of pure physical strength."
"That's a Rank III for you huh..." You say. The dispair of the situation was sinking in.
"What about Furuta though? He's a Rank IV" Asked Maiya. He was obviously just pulling at straws now.
The rest of them just shrugged.
Chikako spoke up, breaking the oppressing silence. "Well, nothing much we can do right now. Let's hit the practice areas."
Everyone else nodded to that. "May as well get some practice in before the fight." Says Kazue, cracking her knuckles.
"I'll go with Chikako." Says Mio. "May as well brush up on some target practice."
"And I'll be with Maiya." Says Kazue, smirking. "Time for some good old sparring."
"Please spare me..." Maiya says with a groan.
Everyone laughs and you can't help but chuckle a little bit.

Is there any way to escape this dystopian hellhole where children are pitted against each other for bloodsport?

Are the battered remains of squad 872 angry at all that we brutally killed one of their friends?

Why do the teachers act like they care? I would have imagined that after clearing away a dozen or so mangled corpses of former students they'd forced to kill each other they'd all be pretty emotionless sociopaths.

What was time in the hospital like? Seemed awfully breezed through. Seemed like it should've been more:

"You wake up to the pained screams of a boy being wheeled through on a gurney, crying out for his mother as he desperately tries to keep his own guts inside his disembowelled torso. He is quickly silenced by the frothing blood gurgling in his throat, and after a few pained chokes he's silent.
In the bed next to you another boy is struggling to come to terms with his now-legless existence, the two bloody stumps spasming randomly. And across from him a girl stares into a hand-mirror, sobbing. Only once she turns her head do you see why - for the other half of her face has been melted away to a rictus grin of burnt skin and exposed bone by magical flame.
Then further down the ward you see squad 872 crying over Yaeda's corpse, her face still locked in a grim visage of agony as her empty eyes stare blankly back at you."

It just seems to me like everything else is totally inconsequential compared to the fact that we've been thrown into some kind of hideous hunger games claiming to be a training centre.
>>
>>44671236
Sorry I should've mentioned that Chikako's device is a bow and Mio's device is dual pistols so that's how they are practicing magic
>>
>>44671275

>>44671277
QM what are the casualty rates for the team duels? And if people even die at all, is there some kind of deus ex machina that brings them back? What do squads that lack a member do? So far the squads you have mentioned seam pretty alike in amount of members.... Just.. Try to explain the entire preliminary matches thing for me..
>>
>>44671387
People that lose members get new members according to their average rank from new recruits (like yourself). All squads are required to have five members and the purpose of the prelims is to determine which squads are ready for contraction (which serves as a graduation ceremony for most squads).
>>44671275
While I do agree that I should've spent more time in the hospital, this isn't really bloodsport. For good or for worse, this is a training facility (albeit a brutal one) that is supposed to prepare child-soldiers/students for combat. The teachers are more or less kept in the dark when it comes to the deathmatches and the rules just list that you fight until a person cannot fight anymore. A surrender factors into that as well. Not all combatants are required to kill each other. Also, you don't really know the people of Squad 872 so you don't know what they think about you to be honest.
>>
>>44671507
So what does really keep us from saying to our teachers that... Hey! They are pitting us against each other in teams where to objective is to beat the life out of the other until he has no life left in him! And even if there were punishment to the students who do such things.. It's still hard to track down EVERY conversation everywhere every time, even with cameras its still not that easy.. You could sneak it in paper for example.

"I'll go with Kazue and Maiya." You say, getting dressed and packing up your bag. As everyone files out the door you wave goodbye to Mio and Chikako and follow Maiya through the hallways. It's still somewhat early so other students are going to their classes.
"Is this your first time going to the practice areas?" Asks Kazue. Maiya tries not to look at you.
You nod.
"I head over there often for practice. Classes should be starting soon so it should be empty."

Maiya swipes her card across the keypad in front of the door to the practice room and it turns green, opening the door. Maiya leads you inside an dark, empty room that gradually illuminates as the room detects your presense. Kazue stretches as Maiya puts down her bag.
"Well, let's get started shall we?"
You nod.

Kazue tells you she'll be sparring with you first. Both of you grab some sparring gloves and get on opposite ends of a mat. She readies herself for you, eyes focused on your every movement. Back in school, your senpai had always told you never take the first move in a duel, but wait for an opprotunity to strike, to look for a weakness to exploit. After several seconds, Kazue charges at you. You sidestep to the right but she ducks in response, sweeping her leg across your own and unbalancing you from your standing position. You roll out of the way as she brings her fist down onto the mat. Distancing yourself from Kazue, you ready your fists as she comes in for another assault. Her attacks are swift and filled with strength but somehow you are able to dodge them. Seeing an opening, you go in now for a strike at her side but she stops you. Twisting your arm, she throws you on the floor.
"10..."
You can't move.
"9..."
You struggle against her hold.
"8..."
Pain races through her arm.
"7..."
You start to give up.
"6..."
You slam your arm on the mat. "I yield! I yield!"
Kazue lets go of you and stands up. "Ok ok. Wanna go again?"

I mean other than military strictness and discipline, if a teacher knows they are expelled from the facility and replaced or a student had their memory wiped (although that can't happen that much nowadays thanks to the suit against the Alliance). And that's not saying these things never happen, just that it's rare. And that's not ruling out that some teachers just keep these things to themselves.

Man, this is wrong.
You don't wait for an opportunity, you MAKE one. And waiting implies a passiveness that is constantly lectured against; you stay on the offensive, even if you don't strike, so that you continue to pressure your opponent. You can respond to openings faster if you are on the offensive and probing your opponent than if you're just waiting for an opening to present itself.

You stand up, out of breath but still able to fight. "Yeah, let's keep on going." You say. "But are there any sparring swords that we can use here?"
Kazue shrugs and looks over at Maiya, who was staring off into a corner. "Maiya! Do we have any shinai here?"
"Shinai? Yeah I think so! Check out the locker!"
Kazue nods and turns to you. "I'll be right back."

After a couple minutes she returns with two shinai, a familiar shape that had kept you company in the during your time in the kendo club. Kazue also comes back with some body gear and you put it on quickly. You stretch your shoulders and test your grip on the weapon. It had that old smell that you could tell that it had been in use for a while. You put on your helmet. Kazue is standing there, still for a little bit. She turns to Maiya.
"Maiya! You wanna take this one?" She yells.
There's a small silence before Maiya gets up. "Sure."
As Kazue helps him put on his gear, you can't help but feel a bit anxious. You remember how he beat one of the previous opponents in your first prelim in one swift strike. He was also the squad leader. That rank wasn't for nothing. You sigh and try to push the worries away, gripping your shinai tighter.
"Ready..." Says Kazue, her hand in the air. "Go!" She yells as she swings her arm downwards.

You pause. Something isn't right. Maiya isn't moving either. But he isn't observing you. You feel like his mind is elsewhere. Not in the fight. But deep within his mind. You feel your arms trembling. You don't know why. "Do something." You find yourself wishing, hoping that this stalemate is some sort of false feeling, that the uneasiness is a mistake on your part. You feel like it isn't though. That you are playing into his hand.

You try and wait for the feeling to pass and for Maiya to close in. You breath in and out, trying to suppress the feeling of anxiousness. After several moments, Maiya takes the first step forward. Then another, and another. Finally he swings the shinai. You twist your own sword to block it, and push back Maiya. You step in, aiming for his wrist in an attempt to disarm him. But he sees your attack and sidesteps. Seeing an opening in his stance, you then go for his head gear with an overhead attack. You are able to catch him offguard and as he is raising his shinai to his head, he swiftly twist your sword and strike at his side. This pushes him backwards and you are able to go for another swipe towards his forearm. You push him back and back, forcing Maiya on the defensive. "Another strike and I should be able to force him down." You think. You step forward with strength and aim for his neck. He goes for you at the same time with a yell, grasping the sword with both hands. You both pause, both of your weapons centimeters from each others' necks. You exhale and lower your weapon. You bow and tell him good match.

The rest of the day was tiring as you cycled between sparing with Kazue and Maiya. Sometimes the two would duel each other in karate but you could tell that Kazue had the upper hand. Regardless, it was nice to see the two of them fight with such vigor, as if they had forgotten about the prelim fight tomorrow. It was somewhat of a happy memory for you. You were sweaty when you returned back to the room. When the three of you returned, you saw Mio and Chikako huddled over the profiles of the enemy squad, still looking at the pictures of their faces.
Kazue put down her bag and got a drink of water from her water bottle. "Still looking at them?"
"Yeah." Said Mio.
"It's too late to be worrying about those types of things. Let's just get some rest."
Everyone groaned but deep down they knew she was right.

You swallow. "I will try to. But what do you mean by 'again'?"
"Nevermind." He says, standing up.
"Are you sure?" You ask.
He doesn't face you. "Before you came and before Kazue came, about a year ago, we had two other people in the squad. Shohara and Hina. They were nice people. Hina would always get into arguments with Mio about tactics and Shohara and Chikako loved to talk about archery together. But last year we had our prelim match. Shohara went against a Rank III. She was a Rank VIII. The guy told him he could surrender but he didn't wanna. So he fought till the death. All we could do was watch. It really hurt us, especially Chikako. Hina broke down. She tried to confront the faculty of the 13th about it. Why we had to fight each other. Why it had to come to this. The next day, we didn't see her. I don't want that to happen again. Do you understand."
You nodded. "I do. I won't put you through that again."
You could barely see a slight smile on his face. "Thanks." And he went back to his bed.

The next few days went by in a flash, filled with a combination of sparing and just relaxing in the room. You guys played some cards together or just talked. Anything to distract from the inevitablity of the coming fight. Everyone was scared, that much was obvious. But you had promised Maiya that you wouldn't die. That much you were sure of, no matter the outcome of the fight the next day.

On the morning of the prelim match, you got dressed early and followed everyone to the match room. A guard stood outside. Five other students stood near the door, who you recognized as the enemy squad. They looked at least three to four years older than you.
"Wait." Said the guard. "Only the chosen squad member will be heading inside."
"What?" Said Maiya. "This wasn't the case last prelim."
"Change of rules." Said the guard.
Kazue made a tsk-ing noise.

"I wonder what caused the change." You say to Kazue.
She shrugs. "Beats me. I haven't heard anything out of the ordinary about the last batch of prelims. Maybe the brass is trying some new PR thing."
"Hopefully. I just hope that no other rules have changed."
"Yeah."
Maiya gets the squad's attention with a clap of his hands.
"So...let's determine our order."
Chikako stepped forward. "I'll go first."
"Wh-why?"
"I'm a Rank VII just like you Maiya."
He sighs. "Ok. I'll go after Chikako."
Kazue then speaks. "I'll be after you, Maiya."
He nods.
"Let's go with Miyako next." Mio says.
"Why?" Says Maiya.
"I have the least firepower of the squad. It was wrong to let her go third last match, true, but at now she's grown stronger. I know she can do this."
Everyone else nods and agrees. Begrudgingly Maiya says, "Sure. Miyako, you're next."
You nod.
"The prelim will be beginning shortly." Said the guard. "Squads, send your first person forward."
You put your hand on Chikako's shoulder. "Good luck." You tell him. He nods and walks forward into the room.

Time stretched on. Silence was all that could be heard in the empty hallways. Not even the sounds of sleep or learning could be felt above or below you. It was as if the white walls that encased the entire facility were traps, designed to keep the undeserving inside as well as the trials the 13th held. You took several deep breaths to calm yourself. It didn't help. When Chikako came inside, she was limping. Everyone stood up quickly.
"Chikako!" Exclaimed Maiya.
"What happened?" Asked Kazue.
He shook his head.
The rest of the squad hanged their heads.
"Next!" Called the guard.
"Everyone, don't worry about me. I'll be fine." Maiya said. He smiled as he entered the room.

Chikako was fine, he only had a few injures and scrapes on her body. The guard said it was nothing life-threatening so he had to stay with the squad until the fight was over. Tension mounted. When Maiya emerged she was hauled away on a stretcher, groaning and screaming as the medics strapped down her arms. Kazue went in next. The waiting pained you more and more. You tried twiddling your thumbs but that didn't help either. "Damn it all." You thought. You gritted your teeth.

When Kazue emerged she smiled at them the biggest smile you had ever saw.
"I won!" She yelled.
Everyone hugged her, their excitement the greatest it had ever been. There was applause and cheering all around before you realized it was still early and you kept quiet.

Next it was you. You entered the room along with what seemed to be Yamato Misato, Rank II.

You entered the room and it was the exact same as the one you had fought in two weeks ago. The fight seemed like a distant memory now. Blood rushed in your head. You tried to calm it but not even deep breaths were working now. The assistants laid a case with your device on the floor. You looked across the floor to see Misato's own device, a katana within a sheath. You took out Tsuyuhime and gripped it in your hand. You took up your stance and braced yourself. The blood pounded harder.

You tap into the streams of magic, the tendrils that course through all creation and existence. You insert your mana, the magical device activating with strength.
>>Yuki Butai<<
Ice spreads out before your feet, chilling the ground and enacting a closed space of ice. Misato's face was still calm, her hand outstretched to draw her katana at any moment. You stretch your hand out and inject more mana into Tsuyuhime. You whisper the name of the spell.
>>Tōketsu no Yari<<
You have grown in strength and your previous spell only adds to this strength. Four spears of ice materialize and shoot towards Misato. For a moment you trick yourself into believing that you might have a chance. Misato is there at the opposite end of the room, awaiting your attack. Her hand reaches for her sword. And she disappears. In that same moment you see a whirl of steel. You bring Tsuyuhime to block the attack. Misato quickly sheathes her katana in a swift motion. She steps in again. You step backwards just in time. The blade nicks your own and you are caught off balance. You roll to the side. Using Tsuyuhime as a balance, you push yourself upwards, looking for where she might strike next. You hear a whoosh and whip your head around to see her behind you. Stumbling, you hurrily cast another spell.
>>Neppyō no Kabe<<
A giant wall of ice appears thta seperates you and her. You sigh. But the screech of metal breaks the silence and the wall collapses, destroyed in a single slice. Misato sheathes her katana. You ready yourself for another attack.

It cools the area around you, allowing for faster ice creation.
You can coat your device in thick ice if that's what you were suggesting though. A miniature ice shield is also possible in your off hand
>>
>>44675584
The whole point of this attack is to slow her attack down or to try and *pinpoint* the exact location of her before the she can move again with her incredible time powers. And ofcourse to counterattack using that information

I should probably add that you should make a square out of that wall of ice so she cant move around it.. A tight one of course to spare magical power.

ow a defensive square around YOU just in case i did not give enough detail. besides if the square is is tight and only has the upper opening we can just watch it and see if she jumps over it.. and the wall gives us just enough time to react if she is about to break it.

Use a smaller version of Neppyo no Kabe, to freeze her katana's tsuba and saiya into a single block of ice.

It seems as if she was unsheathing of her katana as a trigger for her magic. You calm yourself, stopping the rushing flow of blood through your body and surrendering yourself to the surrounding magic. You decide to freeze her sheathe so that she can't take out her sword. Such a simple technique doesn't require a name. You hear the cracks of ice across steel and leather and cloth. She disappears. You prepare for the strike. You hear the cracking of ice to your left. If the strike connects you will die. But the noise generated by the breaking of the ice is warning enough. You swing to your right, Tsuyuhime looking for contact with Misato's katana. The sound of steel clashing with steel resonates. You feel a slight brush as you tumble through the room. You stand up, looking for your opponent. You can't see her. You panic. You grip Tsuyuhime tighter. "Give me strength." You pray to the sword. But you know no power will come. You close your eyes. You try to sense for the flow of magic, of mana. If Misato has to use magic to activate her katana's abilities, then there has to be some imprint somewhere. She can't be that lazy. She's smarter than that. Stronger than that. You know it. You bring Tsuyuhime upwards. There is a clang and you try to resist the insane strength of the enemy mage. You grit your teeth. You feel the ground breaking beneath you. You try to resist. You can't. You scream. You yell. You open your eyes. You have been pushed to one knee. You let the sword come down. You roll to the side and bring your sword to your right. Towards Misato. Tsuyuhime touches air. You look around. You flow magic into your blade.
>>Tōketsu no Yari<<
You create a circle of spears around you. You send them flying. Nothing. You grasp your sword in both hands and wait for the attack. She appears across the room, her hand on her sword. She disappears.

It's no use trying to predict her attacks anymore you judge. You decide to just create small shards of ice and send them in all directions. Maybe by striking all areas at once you might be able to hit her. You send the shards out wards and get glimpses of her form, dashing between place to place. She is advancing on you. Closing in, you bring Tsuyuhime upwards to clash with her. Steel meets again for a brief moment before she jumps backwards. You see blood staining her uniform but she takes a shard out of her body and throws it to the floor. She puts her hand on her wound and the blood flows back, reversing the wound and giving her life again. You grip Tsuyuhime tighter. She brings her sword back into her sheathe before disappearing once more. She is invisable now, her magic presense even less than it was before. You are stuck within the darkness, unaware of what will happen next. That fear, the fear of the future and the fear of the unknown opponent that awaits you, engulfs you. You are afraid. She appears before you. Time slows, and not due to adrenaline. The field of time magic she cast around herself has encased you. You can't move. You are slow in time. You grit your teeth and prepare yourself for the death blow. Her eyes are cold and her grip is absolute. It's over.

Her blade stops at your throat.
"I see you don't want to die. What is your name, Rank VIII?"
The words are stuck in your throat. "Matsushita. Matsushita Maiya."
"I see." Misato sheathes her blade. "Well fought, Matsushita-san."

"Yes." You say. Misato helps you up to your feet and you bow to her and say, "Thank you for the match, senpai."
She smiles at you and walks over to her case, putting her device back in it. "It was my pleasure."

When you walk out of the room you see the rest of the squad. When they look at you you shake your head and they look down, distraught. The guard says, "Both squads, you can go now! The winner is Squad 891."

When you returned to the room, everyone was depressed, keeping to themselves and looking down. Maiya wasn't present.
"Should we visit Maiya in the hospital?" You ask, part thinking aloud, part asking the squad.
Kazue stood up. "I don't see why not!" She said, trying to push an upbeat atmosphere upon the room. Your body hurt some from the fight but you figured the best you could do was to visit Maiya in the hospital. After all, that's what he did for you when you almost died.

Kazue led the way to the infirmary, with Mio and Chikako at the back. Mio was carrying the wounded student. When they neared the hospital, the red cross at the front of the door only signaled the gross sight that was to be seen. Nurses and doctors rushed about, trying to keep some semblence of order in the place. Screams and blood were a common sight, other squads crowded over unconscious, dead, or dying members. You stared. It was the first time you had seen such a sight. When you were first in the hospital, you had been seperated by a white sheet that blocked out all these horrors. Kazue jerked you back to reality. "Come on, Miyako." She said. "Let's move on." You nodded slowly.

When you came to Maiya's bed, there was no one else there, signifying to you that he was in a stable condition. When you entered beyond the curtain that seperated him from the rest of the hospital. As soon as you entered inside the curtain, all the horrible sounds of the outside faded. He was sleeping.
"What happened to him?" You asked.
Mio picked up a clipboard on the end of his bed. "Injuries sustain during combat against pyschic magic user." She began. "Mental trauma as well as imagined pains and hallucinations. Pyschic magic type treatment suggested as well as rehabilitation lasting several days. Memory and cognitive abilities stable. No lasting physical trauma. Time magic healing procedures successful."
"Thank goodness." You say.
Mio turns to the rest of you. "Guys, I'm going to take Chikako back to the room. He needs some rest." You and Kazue nod and the duo leaves.

A couple hours later you see fluttering in Maiya's eyes. He slowly drifts into the waking world.
"Maiya!" Exclaims Kazue. "You had us scared as hell."
"Don't worry about me." He says, scratching his head. He winced. "Damn pyschic magic users are a pain. We lost didn't we?"
You both nod.
"I see." Maiya turns to Kazue. "Kazue, I'll see you back at the room. I want to talk to Miyako."
She pauses for a second. "Ok." She then gets up and leaves.
Maiya turns to you. "I see you're still alive."
"Still not ready to kick the bucket yet." You say. "What about you?"
"Head hurts and can't feel my legs, but the doctors said that would fade in a couple days."
"That's good."
"Maiya. We lost the prelims. We'll have to repeat the year again."
"Well don't give up yet. We lost the main prelims, but there's always next year
"Yeah, but it's all my fault..."
"Don't sweat it, Miyako. Those guys were Rank IIIs. No way we could've beaten them."

You try to force a smile at Maiya. "Let's give it another go next year!" You tell him. Maybe Kazue's constant positivity and energy had finally made an impact on you. Or not. You didn't know. You were too tired to think about it.
Maiya smiled back at you with a tired grin. "The'll be a qualification test in a couple weeks, so we should get ready for that?"
"What's that?"
"Just to see that we are still the same classification it says on our profiles. If you're lucky, you'll get a rank up. If you're unlucky, you might get demoted."
"I see. Well, I should be going."
"See you around Miyako."

When you returned to the room, Kazue ran over to you and shoved in your face a newspaper.
"Miyako! Look at this!"
On the front cover was a headline that red in black lettering: "Imperial Officals declare War on the Alliance! All Forces on High Alert!"
"What the..." You mouth.
"Apparently some Imperial was found to be on an Alliance-controlled world. They were 'recruiting' but were found by an Alliance agent and fled."
Your mind raced. Did they mean you? Was your recruitment the start of a war? What did this mean for the 13th? For the squad?
Mio put her hand on your shoulder. "Miyako are you ok? You look as if you've seen a ghost."
"I'm...I'm fine." You tell her. "Just some shivers that's all. I gotta go to the bathroom." You run out of the room.

You don't know what to think. If war has been declared, then anything might happen. Takero's words all those days ago came rushing back to you. He had said that the 13th was contained within an interdimensional rift. Surely that meant that the Empire couldn't attack here right? But if the Imperial agent lived, they might want to get you. You didn't know what to think. You felt sick. You went back to your room and went straight to bed.

The next morning you were awoken by the intercom. "All students: report to the Entrance Hall effective immediately. Repeat: all students report to the Entrance Hall effective immediately.

The gathering at the Entrance Hall was immense. Easily several thousand students were gathered in the large hall, lined up in their uniforms. Some were high school age, some your own age. At the front on a pedistal was who you assumed to be the head of the facility, Hisako Kenji.
"I'm sure most of you have seen the recent reports from our enemies the Empire. As of today, war has been declared between our two nations. In response, HQ has declared that all education facilities are to begin mandatory contraction testing. It doesn't matter if you have dropped out of the preliminary mock battles or are currently engaged in them. All squads are to undergo testing for contraction. You will recieve a schedule for when your squad will have this occur. That is all. Thank you."

There was whispering amongst everyone as they filed out into their rooms. It was a weekend so there were no classes. When you returned back to the room with everyone, Kazue was ecstatic.
"Did you hear that?" She said, jumping up and down. "Contraction!"
"We might die ya know." Said Chikako.
The mention of death sent everyone quiet. Maiya was still in the hospital.

"This is war guys, take it a bit more seriously!" You say.
Everyone turns serious again.
"Right." Says Chikako, standing up. "How should we break the news to Maiya?"
"Let's head over to the hospital now."
You and everyone else nods. It seems like the right thing to do.

As you are heading towards the hospital again, Kazue matches her pace with yours.
"What did Maiya want to talk to you about?"
"Uh...nothing...Why you asking?"
"Just seems like the two of you are awefully close that's all."
"He's just doing his job as squad leader. I don't even think we're that close."
"Doesn't look that way to me."
"Uh huh...."
She walked ahead. Your mind wasn't on how close Kazue thought you and Maiya were, but on contraction and the war itself. If you were to be sent off to a battle zone with other soldiers, both mage and non-mage, then what would that be like? You had no idea. It was a mystery to you. If the fight today had taught you anything, it was that there were mages out there with twice, no, three times the power at the very least as you. You could be killed at any moment. And contraction posed its own problems. There was the possability of death that came with contraction, something that became a more and more realistic possability the longer you stayed at the 13th. The prospect of death frightened you more so than ever before. Of course you had wondered about death in the past. Such was the nature of learning. What happens when you die? What does it feel like? You asked those questions at the same frequency as every other middle schooler. But now those questions became a reality.

You and the rest of the squad entered Maiya's resting area.
"Maiya." Began Mio, "We have some news."
"What is it? I can already tell it's not good news by your face."
Mio nodded. "The Empire declared war on us. HQ has mandated mandatory contractions."

Confused at this turn of events, you speak up. "Wait up. What are contractions in the first place?"
Maiya sat up and cleared her throat. "Contractions serve two purposes. The first is to serve as an offical sign of a full mage, ready to serve in the armed forces. The second is to bring out the inherent magical abilities in one's mind and body by infusing mana into a mage's body. You know of mana right?"
You nod.
"Mana is the physical representation of a mage's magic given shape, and as such when a mage's mana is infused with their own body, it doubly reinforces their body. This is a very painful process, as it usually requires not only the infusion of a mage's own mana, but also the infusion of the contractor and the mage's squadmates. However, once contracted, a mage is given a significant increase in their magical and physical capabilities. To put this into context. A contracted Rank IV mage is capable of taking on three uncontracted Rank III mages at once. That's the extent of their power."
"And all the mages we will be fighting against in the war..."
"Will be contracted yes."
You are silent.
"But don't worry about it now, we still have some time until our contraction ceremony."
"Yeah hopefully." Says Kazue.
"Let's head back." Says Chikako, standing up.
"I'll see you guys around. The doctors said I'll be able to be discharged tomorrow if I'm lucky so hopefully I'll see you tomorrow. Would hate to miss class."
You chuckle a little and wave goodbye to Maiya, your mind still on the threats posed by both the Empire and contraction.

She stopped time in short intervals. Her final move was creating an area of time where she was moving normally but you were moving slowly. Time magic can either work for slowing down, speeding up, or stopping, although the last one is the most mana intensive. No time travel though. Only short usage is possible due to mana restrictions. The farther away something is the harder it is to cast magic on it (at least using device casting methods). If that makes sense.

>She stopped time in short intervals.
Well this puts a bummer on one of my plans to add an ability to our main character much latter on in the story.

My thought was for us to be able to "Freeze" Time. Since I knew that sounded over powered I wanted to give it a few handicaps like: Can only be used once and recovers only after a set period of days, and that after using it you are completely exhausted and can't use magic for at least a day afterwards. Would last for 30 seconds or so instead of in short bursts like the one the time magic girl used. Would also slowly speed up after 25 or so seconds as the freeze that you put on it slowly "melts" and time goes back to normal.. Mind you I thought about having this as some form of very end level ability and a deal of other handicaps.

But I guees this puts my plans down the drain urghhh.

>>44680117

We will just have to improvise i guess. I heard ice magic makes wonders for your different environment adaptability!
>>44679978
You hear that QM! When we go to war we will be put in all kinds of exotic locations right! This guy is hoping!
>>
>>44680403
I won't confirm or deny that
>>
>>44680117
Theoretically we could achieve something vaguely similar if we get powerful enough- the concept of making something 'cold' is, in a loosely defined way, slowing down particles, right? If we get powerful enough to basically drop everything in a certain area to around absolute zero, that is, in effect, freezing everything close to still, achieve much a similar effect- even breathing would be a trying task in such conditions.
>>
>>44680434
Gues we have to practice then, nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it.. Ow and a bunch of good 1d100 rolls.. and a bunch of guys voting on it to.
>>
>>44680459
There's a lot you can do with the whole 'ice' concept if you read up on the science behind it and the QM is willing to let that shit slide. I could likely come up with some crazy stunts that wouldn't be quite as harrowing to pull off.
>>
>>44680434
Well, the air would be solid quite a bit before absolute zero, even beyond just flash-freezing the blood in people's veins and bursting them like glass.
>>
>>44680507
1 or 2 should be all right. Right QM? we DO need some kind of trump card just to give our character a little more "color" to it.
>>
>>44680459
>>44680434
Sorry if I didn't explain this, but the ranks go up to O (It goes F>E>D>C>B>A>A+>AA>S>O) so technically it would be possible, but only a high ranking mage would be able to pull it off (Rank II and higher I would imagine)
>>44680538
I have a few suprises for the character down the road once we get into some real combat. But right now you are just too low of a rank to have a trump card of any kind that isn't related to tactics or strategy.
>>
>>44680513
Yeah, I figured THAT one would be 'broken'.

Another stunt I can think of that likely wouldn't be TOO hard to do and still be helpful is making 'diamond dust', https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2r4elxLom68 which is basically just small ice crystals in the air- thing super super light/small hail or snow. Depending on how magic and such works, I have the idea that we could use it as basically an early detection system- launch this over a certain area of effect and we could likely predict or sense movement simply by noticing that hey, the ice ISN'T THERE anymore, so something else must be taking up that space.

Stuff like that, y'know?
>>
>>44680579
Well then.. Lets just hope that we will be environmentally tested or send out to battle one time where we get to show off our low skill ice magic at its best!
>>
>>44680630
This is possible possible at your current level (although I think a higher mystical magical ability ranking would make it easier to cast)
>>
>>44680630
As long as we get to shank a bitch I am total okay with any idea we come up with. Never really forgave the girl from that one battle because she basically won by having deus ex machina powers.
>>
>>44680630
Or just refining a temperature sense for more detail than "thing there?"

Something I was thinking Miyako should have done reading through this thread was freeze the ground or make it otherwise treacherous, like with ice caltrops or something. Probably wouldn't have helped, but time-stop doesn't help approach or cover ground you can't in normal time.

>>44680579
QM, is there something preventing spells from affecting mages directly? Like, magic resistance that scales with your mana?
>>
>>44680633
The thing about ice I've discovered (I have a character who controls ice as well for personal stories) is that it's far easier to concept techniques that AREN'T directly dangerous- ice is generally a REALLY good element to have to help dictate the flow of battle, instead of outright dominate via direct damage. There's a lot of stuff you can do with ice to inconvenience, hinder, or disable enemies, and that can be just as useful as straight impact.
>>
>>44680716
Yeah I had the same thoughts as well! Let's just hope QM lets it pass.
>>
>>44680710
>thread was freeze the ground or make it otherwise treacherous,
>>44675499
>>>Yuki Butai<<
>Ice spreads out before your feet, chilling the ground and enacting a closed space of ice.

This already happened in the battle. I don't know why it had such little effect though...
>>
>>44680710
No but the higher rank you are the more sturdy you tend to be (contraction helps with this). Higher regeneration rate, less damage from attacks, ect... So yes in a way it is resistance, but nothing that directly effects magical attacks. A magical attack will hurt the same no matter the rank, just higher ranks will either regenerate it faster or just shrug it off.
>>44680798
Mostly because you were up against a Rank II (who was very light on her feet) and also who more or less teleported around the battlefield.
>>
>>44680798
Well, that spell was focused on chilling the area around us to ease ice creation. I meant a more ranged battlefield control. A ring of slick, rather than standing on a island of it.
>>
>>44680710
If possible, that'd also be useful.

>>44680747
Another thing I had in mind is basically a 'minefield' of ice.
>>44680871
Basically something like this.

We're not direct damage, we're Crowd Control.
>>
>>44680837
>also who more or less teleported around the battlefield.
She just slowed down time and moved in to position to strike when she put time back to normal. that means she HAD to have walked on ice still. So she was only light on her feet i guees.. but really.. on clean ice.. what was her agility rating? AA?!
>>
>>44680837
Freezing people's carotids and femoral arteries is a go!
>>
>>44680890
I love you anon, did I ever tell you that?
>>
>>44680709
If we get decently strong, we could probably make a field of ice and then shank from beneath via sudden icicle. Would that work?
>>
>>44680888
Her stats were:
Physical: AA
Agility:S
Endurance:A+
Mental Magical Ability:O
Mystical Magical Ability:A+
>>
>>44680938
"Whistles" Man we have ways to go.
>>
Is this based on any anime?
>>
>>44680938
Damn son. What did they feed her? Crushed bones of her enemies?

And we'll have the ability to improve as well, or is our potential locked in once we finish rolling contraction?
>>
>>44681031
Fed her Saitama, huh? Meat must've been awfully tough...
>>
>>44680981
All my own creation but I've taken elements from various sources: Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha (StrikerS and A's in particular), Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry, and Mahouka (to a much lesser degree than the last two)
>>44680974
Don't worry I believe in you!
>>44680988
Yes
>>
>>44681042
Depends. For most mages contraction is the highest they will ever get (due to the high power levels one gets after contraction) but life or death situations can serve as a trigger for higher ranks
>>
>>44681056
Well then i belive QM will give is some juicy Level up threads sown...... I hope that is.
>>
>>44681074

considering this: >>44681070
Doesn't seem like it unless it's a serious life-or-quest-over moment. The contraction rolls we get are it, so let's hope the dice gods are with us.
>>
>>44681070
What, so contraction locks the power level in barring mental trauma/fight or flight reactions?

>>
>>44681164
Yeah I'm not too keen on our chances, I'm just saying that's the case.
>>
>>44681103
Not exactly. It's just that the high rankings (AA and higher) have such large gaps between them that it makes it super hard to make the jump to a new rank unless you get a large power spike.
>>44681164
Hey at least we deflected those bullets in the first prelim match!
>>
>>44681164
There was that time we got 8 on 2d4. And it didn't count.
>>
Anyway this was a fun Quest thread see you in the next one QM

Esdesu out! <3
>>
Soooo QM, does Miyako have protagonist stuff in her favor or naw?
>>
>>44681234
She comes from a planet that produces some of the strongest mages in the galaxy (though theres not a lot of Terran mages) if that's what you're asking. I'll try my best not to make plot armor for her but I wanna know more specifically what you mean
>>
Meh, we'll just have to make certain to be clever about how we use our ice powers.
>>
>>44681268
Btw when are you planing the next thread? Not tomorrow or anything right?
>>
>>44681319
To add to that, I'm basically saying probably we need to in character hit up a friggen science textbook or something to expand our minds about the possibilities of ice.
>>
>>44681367
Threads are on Friday and Saturday, 2 PST. Might change that though if it's too early for everyone
>>
>>44681398
Sorry I forgot that you wrote it down in your post that ended this part of the quest..

Yeah the time when you started part 2 of the quest is more fitting like i said before but if you think you get more people the way you are doing it right now. Then its all fine for me i will still stick with this quest to the end.
>>
>>44681462
>if you think you get more people the way you are doing it right now
What do you mean by that? Like what time is "the way I am doing it right now"
>>
>>44681268
I mostly want to know if she's stuck as a mostly average mage or if, even after contraction, she'll have opportunities to improve her scores and Rank.
>>
>>44681490
Part 4 and part 3 all started out at the same time of the day. Thats what I meant by "the way you are doing it now" which is around 2 PM for you. But 9PM on your time was way more fitting for me since it was 6 AM around here.
>>
>>44681490
>>44681626
Sorry for the very long response.. Time zones are a very confusing thing for me.
>>
>>44681600
Yeah of course. Beyond contraction there's training (which boosts your rankings by small increments) and of course real combat/life or death situations.
>>44681626
Oh I see. It's just that around 9 is where I see the IP count go up so that's why. I might try that time for a thread next week and see how that works out. Or maybe after contraction since that's an important thing.
>>
>>44681683
Thanks QM you are a real sweetie. But really Its 7 in the morning over here and i sat trough the entire night to participate in this ESDESU OUT! <3
>>
>>44681683
Huh. That seems contrary to what you said >>44681070 there.

I'm not complaining, though!
>>
>>44681979
What I meant to imply was that you aren't a normal mage. You improve in leaps and bounds above "normal" mages (call it main character status or what have you, although the in-universe explaination is that Terran mages are super-strong and improve very quickly because muh humanity) but once you reach contraction, only real life combat in life or death situations will make a large difference in your ranking
>>
>>44682159
Okay, I think I get it.
>>
>>44682159
Any particular reason for the very fuzzy roll system? Just personal preference, or something more defined?
>>
>>44682388
Fuzzy because I want to keep the experience more focused on the in-universe mechanics of magic rather than the out of universe mechanics for how combat works. It also works better for me since this is my first quest. But in general d100s will be used for magic and d20s will be used for physical rolls
