PREVIOUSLY ON SPITALIAN QUEST: While on the trek to L'Aquila, you and your wayward group of wanderers are attacked by a Sleeper whose conditioning seems to have driven her somewhat insane. After a discussion that veered things into bad terrirory, you decide the best course of action is to let Ines deal with your captive when you reach the city.
>>
>>44754583
After the decision is made, you tend to Claudio and Sofia both. You fear for a concussion, but both of them seem to be faring much better than you had expected, given the circumstances. Your watch resumes, though it's only through fatigue that any of you actually manage to rest.

The next morning is passed in weighted silence save for the ramblings of the Sleeper now strung up on the back of Ines' horse. Even though you don't understand most of the phrases or references she makes, the timbre of her words pull at you, melding with a landscape that seems mildly barren as you start moving around a bend that gives you a decent view in the distance of no man's land.

Ash clouds smother the horizon, telling you of a volcano that does not sleep, a product of the Eschaton when one of the larger meteors crashed in the area. Through the distance and pollution, you shouldn't see the damn thing, but it's the home of the Earth Chakra that your group theorizes is the source of power for the psychokinetics; it shines like the sun itself amidst the noxious fumes of the mountain. It's no true light but a death trap of interwoven telekinetic barriers, so densely packed together that no human could hope to traverse it without meeting their demise.

One day, though.

You force your eyes away from that deadly ray and back onto the ashen path before you.

No idea what all that is, it's a horrible recap. But I'll try.

interesting...

I'm not familiar with this Degenesis thing tho.
Can you provide a quick introduction while I archive-dive?
>>
>>44755069
Yeah. It's been explained pretty well in earlier threads, so I'm gonna do a little copypasta to save time. First and foremost you can get English translations of the book here https://mega.nz/#F!4llFxaSJ!-s8AP4HjornW2PDjuMfl1w but the content really is quite beautiful, I recommend you buying the physical materials as well.

In a nutshell, Degenesis is a Post-Apocalyptic RPG set in Europe and Africa. The world's been ravaged by an extraterrestrial spore infestation that is trying to whittle away and mutate the world into what it wants it to be.

Several factions across Europe and Africa are attempting to carve out their own little pieces in the world while furthering agendas that can be beneficial but are oftentimes self-serving while also attempting to handle the spore infection and mutation of humanity into a new species known as homo degenesis.

>>44755197
There really is more, but the core book is 300 pages deep and quite detailed about everything. You'll get a better idea of things if you read the archived threads.

You drop back from your position, letting Claudio and Sofia both pass you up. Curious glances from them are met with a simple shrug and a gesture to tell them to keep moving. You match pace with Ines' horse and she gives you a sort of half-smile. "Nikodem, what an honor it is!" she states. Her sincerity can only be sarcasm.

"Stow it, Ines," you tell her, not quite in the mood to deal with the brand of acerbic humor you've learned she wields so well. You look her over, then the woman slung over her horse's back, with a critical eye. The girl seems to be humming to herself. It isn't annoying, really. Her voice actually has a nice tone to it. It has no regularity to it, though, bounding up and down in pitch and tempo with no sense of pattern. You're surprised that Ines hasn't snapped yet. "Where's her weapons?" you ask her.

"The boy has that odd rifle," she tells you. "He thinks he can make something of it that we couldn't. Haven't seen it since last night, but," she stares at you archly, "If you're suggesting that the little one here has it, I'd love to hear your suggestions on where she's stowing it." You quirk an eyebrow in answer and she merely returns the gesture. "Talk to Claudio if you're really that curious about it. It isn't firing at me. I don't particularly care anymore."

"Has she been giving you any trouble?" you ask.

"She's a simpleton," Ines informs you. "One very well-versed in killing, but like I said last night, she isn't quite there in the head. She hasn't even tried struggling. For now she seems conent to her humming. I don't see why I should stop her."

"So you don't think she's a problem?" you ask.
>>
Ines scoffs. "Of course she's a problem. And before you try changing your words, she's also a threat, regardless of how well we have her restrained. I'm content that she's content, however. I'll let you know when things change."

Writing.

"So these contacts in L'Aquila," you prompt evenly. "Who are they, exactly?"

"My followers," she states simply.

"Apocalyptics," you mutter darkly. You're familiar with them. Thieves and hedonists, the lot of them. Predatory, curious, and a nuisance, much like the birds they stylize themselves after. They're responsible for the proliferation of the drug Burn that has been a scourge of the Spital since before you were even born. They're a thorn in the side of near everyone, but they aren't stupid. They know how to blend and survive.

"So he has a brain after all," Ines states with mock wonder. "And here I was thinking that your silence was ignorance."

"Which begs the question," you state simply, "why does this Sleeper concern you and your kind?"

"She may not be the brightest candle on the altar, but you've seen what she's capable of," Ines tells you. "She'd make a wonderful use for many things if you train her the right way. She'd fetch quite a fair price in Sicilia by virtue of her being what she is regardless. Many a collector would be delighted to have a Sleeper in their stock."

"That's all she is to you? Cattle?" The implication doesn't sit quite well with you, but you have to admit she's a danger to everyone otherwise.

"I'd prefer her dead. I'm certain a great number of people would agree with me on that account as well, but your mercy has its price. It's either this or let her go to potentially be our problem once more. She certainly had no problem trying to kill us last night," she tells you. "Better she's some use to us that way than sleeping with one eye open for the rest of our lives."

You give her a withering glare, but she brushes it off with a smirk. "We'll talk again later," you tell her.
>>
>>44760754
"I look forward to it!" she calls back with a cackle as you spur your horse further up before settling in next to Claudio. The man simply grunts to you as he realizes you aren't just passing him up. You missed it before, but indeed in his hands is that rifle, gleaming dull gray in the deadened sunlight.

"I'm still undecided on whether she's a witch or not," Claudio grumbles before you can talk. "That cackle, though, has my mind pointed in the right direction, I'm thinking."

You smile slightly at the insult before cocking your head slightly to appraise him. "How are you feeling?" you ask.

"The knot is going down, but I'm still having a headache. I've had worse," he tells you. "I would feel better if the girl was left behind, or dead. Who knows when we'll need that rope? Will I be getting it back?"

"Don't worry about it," you tell him before gesturing at the rifle. "Have you been able to make sense of it yet?"

Claudio looks at the weapon for a moment before shrugging. "It's better than anything I've seen in some time. Definitely from before the Eschaton, though. I can't tell its maker."

"How does it work?" you ask. That actually causes Claudio to smile some, regaining some of his boyish charm.

"It's actually more sophisticated than I gave credit for." He twists it so that the barrel- you assume it's a barrel- is pointed away from anyone, revealing a bank of black bars along its side. "These are...well, the Chroniclers call them 'solar panels'. They take the sunlight and turn it into electricity," he explains to you. "Apparently they're like plants that way, making that energy into another kind. During the day it takes in the light to charge a battery it has. Or you can wind up another mechanism if you're pressed for time. Once it has enough, it uses that power to launch its shot."

"Why not use gunpowder?" you ask, curious. "Wouldn't that be stronger?"
>>
>>44760771

Claudio shrugs. "Probably because of what the shot actually is. It isn't like a normal shotgun. Look." He messes with a button until a cartridge drops from the rifle into his palm. He opens the casing, revealing what looks like...well, Claudio's correct. You haven't seen anything like it. The ammunition is elongated, nail-like but shaped to be aerodynamic. You remember that cruel whining and the explosion that heralded its uses and suppress a shudder. "There's so much we can still learn but this? I haven't seen anything like it before."

You nod, looking at the ammunition for a few moments longer before you spot a strange symbol on the side. "Do you know what that is?"

He smirks. "It looks like a kind of sun disk, don't you agree?"

Hey guys, I'm starting to feel like massive shit. So we have two options in front of us. Do the usual thing and keep it bumped through the night, or I can make a fresh new thread tomorrow with all the progress we made in this thread posted into that one. Or some other third option.
