The fog is thicker in the narrowest part of the strait, where the Spica gunboats are leading the way, carefully motoring along at fifteen knots, confident in their nimbleness and acceleration. You flick between their camera feeds, their gun directors slowly panning to and fro, flipping between visual spectrum and infa-red on a regular basis. The IR feed doesn't help much at this time of day; shortly after sundown the air and the shallow waters of the strait are surprisingly close in temperature. Sea and sky blend together into an eerie green haze, fog laying a hazy smear over the blurs.

Sangiang island rises from the center of Sunda Strait, a hulking, dark colossus barely visible against the skyglow. Its bulk divides the strait in two. The narrow shores compress Space into two lethal funnels, three miles to the west, maybe four to the east. You watch the little green icons of the gunboats as they inch forward, feeling their way towards first contact.

“What's the visibility?” you say, surprised at how loud your voice sounds.

“About a mile, maybe,” Goto murmurs. “In this soup, at least.”

You grunt - the gunboats Exocets need at least two miles minimum range to guide and track properly.

Currently underway, surrounded by lots of other ships and in fairly shallow waters would make the acoustic environment pretty soupy for hydrophones, but it probably can't hurt to have them on at the same time. Active pinging would be ill-advised right now.

However, I would not recommend trying to capture an Abyssal in this mission. That sort of objective requires a dedicated and hand picked strike force, and a specific target. Erry or Terry, or that one Wo from AWOL, are good possibilities. It doesn't really matter who exactly, what matters is we know who they are, where they're going to be, and we can easily overwealm her and get the fuck out of the area before her support arrives.

Also, Hoppo might be another good target. If she exists in this universe.

Esprit de corps is important, but marines basically have no reason to exist as they believe they should exist.

We needed marines back in the age of sail. Vital for protecting ships. Back in WW2 and the Cold War, we needed marines. No debate.

But now? Fuck no, we need to make our military's command structure and culture more streamlined and simplistic. The idea of having marines and the air force as individual branches will forever confuse me, and it just gets more confusing as we get to the point where any infantryman can launch and pilot a drone.

Maybe we could alter the Air Force into some sort of Strategic Air Force; where they focus on IBCMs, nuclear defense, strategic bomber forces, and logistics. But the Air Force as it is now? Give it back to the Army. Absorb the Marines totally into the Navy as a transport helicopter carrier based rapid response unit.

The idea we're going to need the Marines as a separate branch so they are ready for the next D-Day is stupid. If anything, the next mass wave invasion will be done by the Army, if it is done at all. Marines are too fucking "elite" for their own fucking purpose.

But I suppose that's just my opinion and the fact is the current branches are too entrenched to ever be changed unless the US's ass gets kicked so hard that most of the military is too dead to complain about muh history and muh need for a seperate chain of command.

In the Cold War it did because we needed a seperate branch to manage all the grabass we did with Russian bombers.

Now things need to get much more coordinated. Regular army divisions should have their own dedicated air units. They can be drones, they can be traditional CAS, whatever. But they need to have it as theirs and not do "pretty please with a sugar on top" with another branch's officers.

Marines have simply evolved themselves away from what they once were, and we should recognize that and stop pretending that they're a bunch of amphibious specialists when the reality is we use them as shock troops. Which is perfectly fine, but what that is is not worth a seperate branch. Should Rangers be their own branch? How bout paratroopers? No, that's retarded.

Face facts. Times have changed. Gulf War was probably the last completely conventional fight. It's all counter-terrorism and grabass with the Second World from here on. The budget is going to start to be reduced because new tech just ain't paying for itself anymore, not to mention the progressives.

The only reason the Marines and Air Force exist is because of their culture. Not practicality, just a bunch of people who desperately claim that some disaster will occur if the status quo ever changes, which it already has but nobody wants to mention it because then they'll look like retards.

I'm not saying armored vehicles are useless. I'm saying tanks are. Those big, gas guzzling behemoths like the Abrams. The Abrams is only invincible because we've never fought anyone competent. The Iraqis and Taliban aren't exactly known for competence. Sure, they can shrug off RPGs like nothing, but how well do they fare against air power? Or actually worthwhile anti-tank weapons, like the Javelin and TOW missiles, and the various equivalents in other countries?

The tank is a lot like the battleship, it's time came and went. They're meant for massive armor engagements, like in WW 2 and what we thought war with the Russians would be like. They're meant for wars we're not going to see again. We're much more likely to use our strategic bombers then tank battalions for the purposes they're meant for.

Sure, the B-52 might not ever be dropping nukes ever again, but they can drop absurd amounts of conventional explosives, and even launch cruise missiles.
