The cold glass eye of the Global Hawk sweeps silently over the fire and death packed tight into the Sunda strait. Starshells flare to life, casting their solemn glow over the murky carpet of wispy white fog, now streaked grey and black with the smoke of burning ships. Through the murk dark shapes slither, silhouetted against the oil fires that spread across the ocean as if consuming it. Sangiang island looms out of the swirling smoke and drifting embers, the hulking dark hub around which the carnage seems to wheel.

Due west, the flicker of starshells slides off the ashen carapace of two abyssal cruisers, cruising through the water dark and sleek. They're charging north, angling for the narrow space west of sangiang where Kitakami and Ooi wait for them, torpedoes spent and only four guns between them. Tatsuta and Tenryuu are still packing fish but they've been caught out of position to engage promptly. And even if they did, they are *true* light cruisers, the last gasp of the pre-dreadnaught era, filling the role destroyers eventually evolved into. From the way those abyssals are steaming towards battle, fearing not for their convoy nor heeding what may lurk for them beyond the island - you know they're confident in their ability to stand up and fight.

“Kitakami, Ooi. You've shot your wad. Draw back towards the frigates.”

“We can still catch them from behind, Admiral,” Tatsuta's cool voice suggests. “And slip them a torp-”

“Tat*suta,*” Jintsuu sighs. “It's only seven miles or so, Admiral - we could catch them north of the island in fifteen minutes.”

“You're out of torpedoes too,” Tatsuta points out.

Your eyes drift down to the blob of green where Perth and Houston are trailing Naka, sheltering behind her smokescreen. The abyssal's lead cruiser is heeling to starboard, using their greater speed to cut off any retreat to open water and pin Naka and her new friends between their guns and the burning fires of the convoy. Anything could be lurking in that mass of light ships, concealed behind the flames or amidst the smoke and darkness - more torpedo boats, more destroyers, corvettes, frigates. Destroyer Escorts, kaibokans, sloops of war - there's no way to know.

And now you have a battleship lumbering in from the south to tighten the noose.

[ ] Have Ooi and Kitakami pull back, and engage those cruisers with Nareusan and Steadfast. Direct Tenryuu/Tatsuta and Sendai/Jintsuu to punch through that convoy and secure an escape route north.
[ ] Have Tenryuu and Tatsuta shadow the cruisers to help KTKM/Ooi and Nareusan/Steadfast. Send Jintsuu and Sendai south to aid Naka and the new cruisers.
[ ] Send all your light cruisers to help saturate the abyssal duo making a break for it - you've got airstrikes and surprise corgis to shake off the abyssal cruisers if you need to. Committing light forces piecemeal is a bad idea.

Committing forces piecemeal is ALWAYS a bad idea. In Korea, it got us pushed back to the Pusan Perimeter. In Vietnam, it got us Vietnam. If you're committing forces, commit them IN FORCE.

Seems like the best option. It doesn't commit the light cruisers piecemeal and suppports our new friends. If I'm reading this right it is essentially the same as option 2 but sends more support towards Perth and Houston. Could we get a map again?

Sendai and Jintsuu literally have more main battery firepower between them than Tenryuu, Tatsuta, Kitakami and Ooi combined.
I'm assuming this vote doesn't entail pulling Naka away from Houston, Perth, the corvette and the gunboats with them.

Remember, Iowa's main battery may be pathetic compared to Ari's (literally 1/3 as many guns lol) but predreads are built around having a fuckload of secondaries, which are pretty ideal for bodying most of the forces we have available. We've landed a solid punch and broken up the landing-operation, wherever it was going. Now let's get our new returnees, and everyone we arrived with, out of the cauldron to regroup and withdraw.
Chuuniboat and Spear-chick can catch the cruisers in a crossfire and take them out of the picture, then turn and hold the line against any escorts the convoy still has. Jintsuu and Yasen-baka have just enough gun-power to get their sister and the rest of the Allied forces (new returnees included) out of the fire-sack again - especially if the Spicas finally cut loose with their missiles against the eastern cruiser force.
Hate and the Corgi Contingent stay in reserve for the moment. We can commit them to cover our withdrawal - they land, clobber a juicy target, then Fulton out again.

I'm a bit concerned that leaving Naka and the new arrivals unsupported might come back to bite us in the stern.

Also, commiting forces with Long Lances (Tenryu, Tatsuta) against enemy cruisers whose capabilities are still uncertain (they might be anything from light to protected to armored cruisers) is risky. A repeat of the Naka accident might take place and that'd be *bad*.

Then again, IF they are protected / armored cruisers, then we'll need everything we have to punch them hard enough and I'm afraid that even if we engage with every gun we have, it'll still be a slaughter.

Fuck it. Commit everything against the cruisers. Out of the three available options, this is the only one that guarantees that we'll have enough throw weight (including torps / corgis, if necessary) to punch them hard enough for them to feel it, no matter what their armor. Plan for the worst possible scenario (two armored cruisers in close range).

we have a limited amount of space to work with because of the BB, so we need to thin the ranks. However, the longships are currently being shielded by longships we've already sunk, so we need to pull back before we use more torpedos(?)

We also want to get rid of T/T's torpedos before we send them deep into the longboats to follow cruisers, because they're liable to get blown up.

Not using missiles or corgis because we're fucked if we can't deal with the BB, so we have to take our odds here so we don't have to send cruisers into the meatgrinder later.

Nareusan and Steadfast still have their anti-ship missiles, while our CLs are mostly out of torpedoes. They can probably handle themselves, though we may need to send them support later.

But what we need right now is an avenue to withdraw. I don't think we can take on that predreadnought, we simply don't have the assets for it. So we are going to have to withdraw and maybe come back tomorrow morning with more air support if the Abyssals still want to fight even after their invasion is scattered.

Now I'm reluctant to send in the CLs into the convoy, because we don't know what lurks there, but the four of them can probably handle any surviving torpedo boats or other escort ships. And we can't avoid taking risks in war.

>I'm a bit concerned that leaving Naka and the new arrivals unsupported might come back to bite us in the stern.
It might, but leaving the cruisers free to run amok through the strait would also be pretty terrible.

Naka-chan's group currently consists of herself (a destroyer leader), a light cruiser, a heavy cruiser, a corvette, and four attack boats that can function as stupidly hilarious 'torpedo' boats, all in various states of damage.

It's not a force with great resilience/armor/staying power, but it IS a force with enough striking power to punch their way to safety through most things.

American ships are actually performing much worse on all servers than IJN, KMS and VMF ships.

The only exception was Midway, even Iowa is almost identical to Izumo stats wise now.

The only problem I have with that is that WoWS nerfed the ships. You can't activly use secondaries, which are really inaccurate even though they've got the same FC, ships become fucking invisible unless you've either got a plane flying in AA range or an allied ship close enough to see the whites of the eyes of the tiny people manning the ship.

WoWS is fun to play, but a reliable simulator, it is not.

...Iowa and Yamato need to have a friendly little sparring match. Nothing serious, just...

I REALLY want to see those two titans have a chance to really fight it out. The fact that they didn't in WW2 is downright criminal. Two legends like that never having a chance to measure themselves against the only real equal to exist... I'd also personally throw Bismark and Warspite in there as well, but the Kriegsmarine has apparently been rendered non-canon and Warspite, like all britbotes, exists in that weird state of quantum uncertainty where it's semi-canon until Dirigible Queer says one way or the other.

...Hey, come to think of it, if Arizona spoke, she and Yamato might find some common ground. Both were great ships that were by twists of fate, denied their full role in the war. Same as Hood, Bismark and Tirpitz, honestly.
>>
>>45404908
Remember that out of all of them, the USN came out on top. They're trying to avoid some bitchy players complaining about how WG's saying that USN owns your asses and everything else sucks.

To be fair, the performance of the Dreadnoughts is pretty accurate. Slow, vulnerable to plunging fire, limited range, 'cause they were made to duke it out close to mid.
>>
>>45404962
Fuso outperforms it on an average of 20% worldwide.

Basically every USN ship has the same average damage as the previous tier IJN ship.

The tier 8 Amagi does more damage on average than the Iowa at tier 9.

0.5.3 is going to make that a captain-skill. But it's a 4-point skill, IIRC, and if you have it, you lose automatic targeting of your secondaries, so you need to designate *all* secondary targets by clicking on them.

>>45404908
>Does Wargaming hate the USN or something?
The glib answer is "Yes, because Russians".
More seriously, I think the USN is meant to be the 'starter navy' for all players, decent in all categories but not exceptional in any of them. The IJN has stealth and superb torpedoes, not to mention Yamato (TEH BESTEST BATTLESHIP EVAR!!! Just ask the fan-boys!) The VMF destroyers have decent stealth and ridiculous gun-power. The Kriegsmarine cruisers are a little brittle, but have great guns and 6km torpedoes for oh-shit moments. At the moment, I think people are using the USN to find their speciality and style, then using that to beat up on other people coming up and trying to do the same thing.

No excuse for getting killed by DDs in an American BB.

I learned the game on IJN DDs. Raced up that line before doing anything else. I then moved to cruisers and BBs - and with ~200 BB games under my belt, I have been killed by DDs less than five times.

If you have trouble playing against DDs, PLAY DDs. It's amazing how you learn to dodge torps just by observing your opponents (not) dodge yours.

Unless you invest in a Battery mod that increases traverse at the cost of reload, but an experienced player can end a DD in one, maybe two turrets. Either way, New Mex is a dreadnought. Yes, just dodge. Or place yourself in a position where this situation cannot take place.

Firstly, you're 7:10 mins into the game. That's enough time for ~5 Shimakaze reloads - you should probably have noted that the enemy DDs were there because of previous launches. Why go there?

Obviously, there may be reasons; even so, you're turning wrong. You're out of range of all visible enemy BBs, so you shouldn't worry about exposing your broadside and you can maneuver optimally to avoid torps. Why are you turning to starboard and not port? Just cut speed and turn left and you'll eat MAYBE one of the torps coming from the west.

(Also note that the DD in B is spotted. If it had been spotted earlier, you should have taken evasive action a long time ago, not when you (or your fleet) saw the torps).
>>
>>45405564

Well the 18inch guns on the Yamato had on paper more penetration than the 16's of the Iowa class, but it wasn't that much more, only about 1.5 inches at most ranges.

It doesn't make sense to me that they would nerf the performance of US ships in the game just because there were more of them in real life.

I will also be forever mad that the Japanese guns have better accuracy on average because they decided radar wasn't going to be modeled.

It's not a big deal for most of the ships in the game, but the late tier US ships had smaller optical range finders specifically because they relied more on their radar.
>>
>>45405611
I forgot a few:

98 gearing class destroyers, 58 Allen M. Sumner class destroyers, 30 Benson class destroyers, 200 something flush deckers, 78 gato submarines, 120 Balao class submarines, 29 tench class submarines, and that's not even counting the Liberty Ships. Overall, I'd have to say that all the US Ships below Light Crusier level would be suffering severe identity crises.
>>

Radar would increase ranges, not reduce dispersion. The IJN deliberately went out of their way to reduce dispersion, while other navies kept it higher due to it increasing a chance to hit due to uncertainties in range measurements.

No. Performs worse than the Nagato, and much worse than Amagi.

Turret traverse angles are horrific, meaning 1/3rd of your already inaccurate and slow shells can't be used without going broadside and being citpenned by literally everything.

Torpedo damage resistance is literally worse than tier IV's. As in, twice as worse (18% vs 34%).

Enjoy death.

I'm most heavily invested in the US BB line atm.

The North Carolina is probably my favorite BB along with the New Mexico. I love the Iowa but I get focused a ton in higher games and the guns are great but they overmatch most targets armor.

Maybe I'm just bad but it annoying to get 5 hits on a cruiser and have them all do a collective 5-6k

My experience prior to the Mahan was to wait for other ships, cruisers and battleships preferably to act as bullet sponges and then pull a Sendai on the opponent, using whatever cover is available, and then running the fuck away with every gun I can get pointed at the enemy firing.

Assassin gunships. With the proper spec-out, they can fire while remaining invisible and burn everything with HE shells. And they're stealthy enough to choose when to engage with USSR DDs, which are the only other gunship line.

The game balance for BBs at Tier 10 is pretty fucked. Yamato's armour thickness is taken at face value, so regardless of material quality they are literally immune to all 16" shellfire unless it hits them perpendicularly at close range. As a result they shit all over US players the moment they upgrade to tier 8

Wargaming's answer to player complains is that the Yamato shitting all over the Montana is working as intended. They they went on to say that the German/British and French BBs would be in the game eventually and those suck, so the Montana would have something to bully. Nevermind that the Yamato would shit all over all of them. Some people suspect that this president was set so that Russian ships could be added with similarly inflated paper stats.

That said this cuts both ways. Some of the US Cruisers are so good that they have been nerfed like clockwork in every patch since the beta. And despite having less than 50% of their real world power in some areas they still outperform everything else at that tier.

You can't make a game like this without ignoring real world stats in favor of a balanced approach.

You could maybe give each country's ships, or specific classes, some thing they're better at than others or something, but that's about it.

The number of slipways they had at any given size. Specifically, for most ships larger than a destroyer, only four slipways which could economically build the ship existed in the nation. Back in the '20s the IJN and RN reps were hobnobbing at some embassy function and the Japanese misinterpreted a statement by a RN officer. The RN officer was saying that the RN believed that oxygen torpedoes were basically a technical impossibility and weren't bothering with R&D for them in favour of steam/wet heater engines, whereas the Japanese misinterpreted that statement (somehow) as him saying that the RN weren't bothering with Oxygen Torp R&D right now because *already had* oxygen torpedoes.

Cue one panicked Japanese Oxygen torpedo crash program and a *lot* of money, and you have the Type 93 several years later.

>>
>>45406298

Your right that's how it should work, but with the things they have decided to include and not include based on their whims they have nerfed how US ships operate.

For instance how shell velocity works. US guns have lower muzzle velocity pretty much across the board. This is consistent with real life, but irl they lost their velocity much slower over distance where as japanese shells lost their velocity much faster meaning that US and JP shells tended to have similar velocity when hitting a target at distance.

I under stand that in the system WG has this might not be easy to implement, but since all they take into account is muzzle velocity it turns Japanese and German cruiser guns into rail guns and US cruisers have these huge rainbow arcs of fire that make it frustratingly hard to put effective fire on anything not a BB at range.

Also that rainbow arc is completely fabricated a JP 8inch with 850~ mps muzzle velocity at 16,000 yards hit at an angle of fall of 15.8° where as a US 8inch firing at 770~ mps would have an angle of fall at 16,000 yards of 16.9°.

It's not like the US really mass-produced larger ships other than the Essex class. The Clevelands and Baltimores were semi-mass produced, because we didn't want to take the delay involved in changing over, but it was never really intended to build them for six years nonstop.

USN procedure was typically to order a new design every year up until the Washington Treaty; after that, we would generally order in small batches. Pairs of capital ships, divisions of cruisers, and squadrons of destroyers. The only reason that the Standards are so similar is because SECNAV Josephus Daniels (he who ordered the Navy to go dry!) kept overruling the General Board's characteristics for new battleships every year, instead ordering that that year's pair be a repeat of the previous one with some detail improvements.

>>45406714
Yes, but only by chance. It was intended as an interim design until a final CL design could materialize. (That design finally arrived as the Worcester, in 1947.) Indeed, they nearly never even built the Cleveland; the only thing that saved it was the demise of the London Treaty with the outbreak of war, since we couldn't quite get it under the 8000-ton limit for CLs.

By "semi-mass-produced," I meant more that it was what we were building when Congress shit itself and shouted, "ALL THE SHIPS! LITERALLY ALL OF THE SHIPS, EVER!" at the Navy when asked what they were to order on 8 December 1941. As opposed, say, to the Fletchers or Clemsons, or the Butler-class DEs, all three of which were specifically designed to be mass-produced, very nearly on an assembly line.

“Sendai, Jintsuu, link up with the frigates at best speed. Tenryuu, Tatsuta, shadow them past sangiang island, but keep your damn distance and try not to get backlit, understand? We'll catch them in a pincer.”

“Don't put anyone in the way of our torpedoes,” Tatsuta warns you.

“Once we've whaled on them a bit they'll be slow and have silenced secondaries. Then I'll send you in for the coup de grace.”

“That sounds like my kind of plan!” Tenryuu says, her sword flashing in the meager light, go-pro wobbling a bit with the flourish.

Your eyes drop south - to find the Abyssals haven't formed up line-astern again as you'd expected them to, once they realized there were no fish in the water. They're hell-bent on closing to point-blank range. Six-thousand yards *is* point-blank range in anyone's book, but with the fog, smoke and terrain occluding the horizon - once both sides open fire, no amount of armor is going to do anyone much good.

Numbness spreads through your mind, seeping through your stomach and locking your knees tight. Time and space have finally been compressed into a tight ball of potential, and within moments it will burst like the starshells drifting over the strait; a conflagration to light the entire field with its glory and violence.

“Naka?” Goto breaks in suddenly, staring at the screen. “What are you doing?”

Naka's put her helm hard over to port, swinging her bow at the charging cruisers, now only five-thousand yards distant from Perth and Houston. “Press close, strike home,” Naka echoes.

“Naka, turn about under smoke,” Goto commands.

“No.”

“Naka,” Goto almost hisses. “That is a direct order. Turn around now.”

“If I can make a difference here,” Naka breathes, her voice almost serene, “just this one time, it'll all be worth it.”

Goto's face goes blank with shock, his eyes widening as he tries to process too much with too little time to do it. Through the smoke and fog you can see the bows of the closest abyssal cruisers beginning to come about, aiming to unshadow their secondary batteries. Big shells are already thundering into the waves around Naka's diminutive form; the massive blasts of HE shells dwarfing the tiny girl as they probe for her.

“I feel like me again,” Naka says softly. “Goto - this is for the best. I didn't tell you -” she's cut off as another close hit rocks her violently, her speed dropping almost immediately - buckled plates, light flooding, most likely. “I'm sorry.”

“What,” Goto says, swaying a little as his spinning mind throws him off balance. He lunges for you, arresting himself just short of seizing you. “Stop her, Settle! STOP HER!”

“In war there is but one favorable moment,” you quote quietly. “The great art is to seize it.”

Goto turns back to the screen. “Naka, you've got a good angle on those ones north of you - launch, damn you, launch NOW and they'll have to tack away!”

You lick your lips, trying to find moisture in a mouth gone dry. “Naka.”

“You either die a singer,” she replies, “or you live long enough to see yourself belting out All-Star.” For the first time in quite a while, the smile in her voice has no sickly undertone. “Tell Harder I said that.”

“Naka,” you manage again as your heart sinks into your stomach. “I'm sorry.”

“This is for the best,” Naka replies. “On my terms. For-”

“I'm sorry,” you repeat. “But this was the only way.”

From the slowly-dispersing smokescreen behind Naka comes the triumphant roar of thundering diesels.

The flash of a rocket motor igniting lights the fog, drawing the aloof eye of the Global Hawk. Naka ducks involuntarily as the missile screams overhead, angling for the nearest enemy cruiser. Two, three, four more go thundering out of their tubes as the KD Kasturi looses her javelins, the bright glow of the rocket motors tracing a brilliant bright streak through the air on the infa-red as they seek the targets. One of the abyssals takes it square on the chin; the blast slamming into the forecastle and staving in the conning tower armor. The blossoming explosion briefly lights the stricken vessel, giving you a glimpse of secondary gun mounts hurling through the air warped and twisted as they're torn from their mounts - and then the vessel vanishes beneath the climbing cloud of smoke and debris. Two others miss their targets; one just barely whistling past to port as the cruiser leans hard on its rudder, arresting its turn to reduce frontal profile - the go-to tactic against radar-guided missiles, just as it is against old straight-running torpedoes.

Now come the missile gunboats, catching up with the still-accelerating Naka easily, their diesels roaring hungrily. They fan out to pick their targets; splitting hostile fire as they bob and weave through smoke and fog. Their icons light up one by one on the tactical plot, a little red “JAM” appearing beneath them as they turn on their ECM suites. Kasturi herself is pulling up behind Naka, pushing her powerplant to its limit and past to keep up, her own ECM blazing away.

“What are you doing!?” Naka warbles, not quite believing her own eyes. “What?”

The enemy is simply barreling in head-on, trying to cover each other's flanks with their forward secondaries - but the ECM seems to be doing its job, the gunboats weaving and bobbing through the descending spray of salvos as they chase them, vanishing behind towering pillars of dark water only to emerge from the mist, water shedding from their decks as their guns blaze away madly. White phosphorus shells airburst around the abyssal's flanks, scorching their sides blinding whatever eyes they have.

“What are you doing!?” Naka demands. “Wave off. WAVE OFF! SETTLE!”

A bracketing salvo thunders into the water on either side of Naka. KD Kasturi pulls alongside, her stack smoking as she pushes her diesels to their utter limit. There's a brief flare at her sides, and then the air all about Naka is shimmering like a sea of stars, the distant glow of flames and star-shells glittering and flitting about her like lightning bugs. It works - the next salvos fall too far ahead.

“Admiral, what's happening to her!?” Jintsuu demands.

“She's making a torpedo attack,” you reply.

“She can't, Settle, not alone-”

“No,” you reply. “Not alone.”

One of the boats takes a shell directly to the hull. There's a bright blast, a cloud of debris and smoke - and then just a bright blob of fire on the Global Hawk's FLIR feed. The indistinguishable shapes of men going into the water can be seen before her fuel bunker goes up, the blast triggering her missiles and shell magazines. The FLIR is washed out for a second, and then it fades back in as the filters adjust - the other three boats still boring in, stormed at with shot and shell as they close for shots they can't possibly miss.

“NOT FOR ME, NOT FOR ME NO NO NO NOT FOR ME NO STOP YOU CAN'T GO BACK GO *BACK*!” Naka is screaming, wailing, flashing her signal lamp at Kasturi, but the corvette is glued to her side, ECM pumping out cover. Naka's bitter weeping subsides to an almost inhuman growl as she steadies her wobbly course, angling for a good 45 degree shot on the southernmost cruiser - she's committed to her run, now and there's nothing she can do about it. As she gains position the port batteries of the nearest abyssal begin cracking away at her, bright flashes coming from the fighting tops as Nordenfelt guns pitch in to pin her down, but she's well out of their range. Six-inch guns drop a hailstorm of shells about her, splinters smashing into her face and ripping at her clothes. Kasturi is replying with everything she's got, her 100mm foreward gun slamming away.

The boats loose their Excocets as one. From the maelstrom of explosion-churned fog comes the bright wink of their motors igniting - and then the thin fingers of smoke contrails screaming through the night as the weapons follow their per-programmed inertial guidance. Long Lances might be fast, but they can't compare to missiles. AA fire probes for them hopelessly as they punch through the mist and smoke like bullets, inevitable trajectories finding their inevitable prophecies as they slam into the abyssal's sides.

Fire and flame light the night. Naka's Long Lances hiss as they're ejected from their tubes, muted splashes belying the awful power she's just unleashed as they thunder away through the night towards the last abyssal.

She puts her helm hard over to retreat, and her go-pro feed goes dark.

On the Global Hawk's FLIR, a fireball is climbing skyward where the KD Kasturi once was.

Uh, no. The Light Brigade numbered at least 650 men, and only lost 110 killed, 161 wounded. Which, because you're a fucking idiot that can't Google, is 271 casualties, well over the accepted ~37% loss rate that leads to a unit's morale breaking.

However, even in the face of that, the Brigade still made it to the Russian guns, but they couldn't do anything because of how badly they got savaged.

Big difference in capability and execution there.

If it's the Hawks, then covering the retreat is the best use of them since unlike F-16s it's a subsonic aircraft that's just a repurposed trained with very small external stores and more vulnerable to AA, unlike the F-16s which can go into a supersonic divebomb.

Firstly, because Naka might need the psychological catharsis of killing an Abyssal and those Lances are already on the way.

Secondly because it's better to keep SOME reserves on standby - maybe against the battlewagon.

Thirdly because we still have light cruisers standing by nearby. They can provie support if necessary now that the enemy cruisers have been gutted.

Nah. I've been thinking of what various names could be used for various weapons - this was inspired by (blaaaaah) a particular anon.

His idea - Veðrfölnir - was regarding fashioning a rifle from one of Iowa's main cannons. Now, obviously, it wasn't long before it got swatted down... but that got me thinking about other weapons.

Take some little destroyer cannons, fashion a pair of pistols from them. Ta-da, Huginn and Muninn.

Or a light cruiser sub-machine gun - Jörmungandr.

Gotta agree with you there, deme. That's actually one of the things that I love, but so rarely gets done - when the enemy is super advanced, but not just flat-out immune to the perfectly good kit the modern world has. We're actually pretty damn good at killing things dead, believe it or not!

Planefag's complaint isn't a good complaint in the first place.

As >>45408295 said, it's mostly the plot of an alien invasion story.

1. Aliens with overwhelming firepower invade and crush humanity.
2. Humanity is down, but does not give up.
3. Humanity works hard to close the gap and fight back, often by stealing alien technology to use for themselves.
4. Humanity learns to beat them at their own game.

>if alien race is powerful enough to crush entire military at once with no losses then there is no teching up to match them due to alien tech being impossible to obtain due to there being nothing to salvage from
No, it's more complicated than that.

The main weapon humanity developed to fight the Fog, the Vibration Warhead, was made entirely on their own without any use of Fog technology.

While the weapon would destroy a Fog ship on contact, the main problem is they have yet to figure out how to get it past the ships' shields.

Of course that doesn't include the bits where this alien race consists of AIs who are trying to emulate humans so their military ability grows beyond MOVE FORWARD FIRE WEAPON LOTS. This opens them up to being converted into allies, or losing due to things like Pride, as what just happened to Kongou.

I oncer read a somewhat compelling argument that the US in 1936/7 should have started building a new batch of Armored Cruisers between 17,500-21,000 tons with 10" guns instead of both the Alaska class and all the heavy cruisers they did build in that era.

Thoughts?

Action posting just makes you stand out that much more, newfag.
If you want to blend in on 4chan, fuckin' lurk moar.
But I guess if your just gonna admit to being an SBfag, you don't really wanna do the whole blend thing.
>>
>>45408988
>The advanced weaponry came first, and the girls second, actually.

Even so, there's a place for soft-science speculative fiction. I don't think every work has to deeply consider the impact of its fancy alium space magic if that's not the point of the work. Like, I don't think Power Rangers and shit ever really go into how all that fancy Power Ranger tech and Zords and whatever really impact the rest of the world, and Power Rangers doesn't NEED to get into that to be a fine show.

Again, if the author pretty clearly set out to make a work about the impact of alium space magic on a setting and then proceeded to handwave the military aspects, then yes that would be lazy. But if that sort of work isn't what the author is going for, then I think it's unfair to force authors who aren't interested in sitting down and deeply considering the implications of their alium space magic on their setting to do precisely that.

Sometimes, you want to show how the Mass Effect would impact galactic society. Other times, you just want spaceships and pew pew lasers, with or without cute girls.

Hey Hate, don't you marines get some kinda sword when you graduate or some jazz like that?

And like, don't Chuuninbote and her sister have melee weapons?

Now, you see where I'm going with this?

Go stick a sword up BB-4's ass.

With both swords, if you catch my drift. Launch an amphibious assault, if you know what I mean.
>>
>>45409386
Well, not wanting to contribute to the image limit is a concern I can see occasionally popping up, although at 132 images on page 10 this isn't really a concern in this particular instance.
>>
>>45407136
Well I could see why chaff and flares could throw them off, if they have the mentality of the ships of the era flares could blind them and chaff would make them WTF.
>>
>>45409316
To be fair to the man, it is less insult than accusation. He perceives hypocrisy, thus, to him, you are a hypocrite.

A reasonable answer is to explain why there is no hypocrisies in your stances and opinion on the subject.

You are, of course, free to ignore it. We can ask questions, but not demand answers.
>>
>>45409420

>>
>>45409511
Thats the thing though. Settle falling for Arizona IS fraternization and that is against every rule a commander can break in an armed force, no matter the time and the place. It not only show blatant favoritism but also causes the commander in question to make very poor decisions when the friend/loved one is at risk to save said person. Therefore his first reaction WAS spot on the money. Now he has utterly reverse his stance and in doing so is being blatantly hypocritical about the situation.

The fucking problem is that him NOT fucking doing it is running the fucking risk of sidelining one of fucking two actual honest to fucking god battlewagons we have right now. Besides that, Goto is never not in fucking ops when shit's popping off, and he's got the fucking rank to do this.

Fuck sake the only reason he keeps handing this shit off to fuckstick is becuase he's probably strongly considering bending Kongou over a table for a half fucking hour of the hardest dicking she's ever fucking gotten bar fucking none, and at least this way he can be sure the next poor fucker to get stuck in charge can handle the stupid fucking shit!

How does this prove anything about the "quality" of arpegio? A shitty mangaka met his otaku friend from the JSDF and they sperged about some airport-fiction tier naval weapons, and then one of them decided "THIS NEEDS GIRLS LOL".

What a dumb fucking manga, and what a waste of your time to try and defend it as anything but.
>>
>>45409711
