And although this is your spiritual realm, and everything within it is by its very nature identical in its reishi composition and spiritual presence to you, Rosa and Tenkotsuki are different. They have a much denser presence, and their reiatsu has always had a different character to it that makes it possible to tell them apart from the “background”.

That's how you know she is no longer present inside you. Rosa, a presumably inseparable part of you, has been separated from you. It's no wonder you've felt so alone, so sickened by your current state. You're essentially one third of a person, cut off from the other two thirds of you.

“That shouldn't be possible,” you sigh to yourself, for there's nobody else here to hear you lodge the complaint. “And yet, here we are.”

There's no insightful response. No clever quip about wasting your time. But truth be told, your half of the “dialogue” is practically instinct at this point in your life.

Next, you search around you for any clues. Assuming that your observations are valid and your conclusion correct, that Rosa is indeed gone, you may be able to find some trace of why. And when you do, the message is a rather confused one.

“A quincy zeichen,” you mutter, looking down at the pattern etched in glowing flames in the volcanic glass near Tenkotsuki's tree. Not one used by the Sternritter, or by those once loyal to the King, but an older pattern. One untainted by that period in the quincy's long history.

But what could it possibly mean? Was it an act of defiance? A warning? A reassurance?

Sasakibe nods, and sends out his Division's messengers with the new orders. You also receive a call not long after from Rangiku, stating that due to an unspecified “complication” your young human friends will be staying with the Ninth Division overnight: in reality, a ploy to make locking the Senkaimon down seem a little less obvious.

It's not until well into the evening that all of the Captains and Lieutenants still remaining in the Seireitei are assembled, with Ukitake and Miyako being the last two to show up. Yamamoto is nowhere to be found, and people are already talking about it. Also conspicuous in her absence is Yoruichi, who has yet to return from fetching Urahara.

“So who DID send for us?” Shunsui asks Unohana, having discerned that it couldn't have been the Old Man.

You step out into the front and center of the room. “It was me. I called you here.”

“On what authority?” Komamura growls, clearly displeased at what he no doubt considers arrogance on your part.

“My own,” you explain. “The Head Captain has been inexplicably absent for most of the day. He left no notice or instructions with Lieutenant Sasakibe, which meant that someone needed to take the lead.”

“And you believe you are the one to do it?” Komamura presses.

You raise your hands in front of yourself. “Sajin, I'm taking the lead because I put it together first: the sudden departure of the Head Captain, and the problems many of us have been having with our zanpakuto.”

At that pronouncement many of the shinigami present fall silent, suddenly introspective. You can tell several of them were very much aware that they had been having such difficulties, but not that others were in a similar position.

“One of my zanpakuto is missing: the blade is at my side, but empty,” you continue, patting Komara no Tachi where it sits at your hip. “The other has locked herself away in my mind, inaccessible. She's defending herself from something, and what I want to determine is what.”

The doors of the meeting hall open at that moment, and in walks Yoruichi escorting a face most present couldn't have possibly anticipated.

“Urahara Kisuke?” Ukitake muses quietly. “I thought you were still officially banished? Are your skills with intrusion still that great from all those years ago?”

“Not at all, my dear old friend!” Kisuke waves with mock humility. “Lady Yoruichi's skills on the other hand...”

“I requested Kisuke's help in determining the cause of the sudden silence of our zanpakuto,” you explain. “I will of course take all responsibility for his presence here, so please don't pester me about it.”

With a single, smooth movement the man draws his sword, and the meeting hall is filled with a brilliant purple flash...

“This is my world,” you realize aloud, glancing at the cracked lava and the azure flames that feel more like home than any physical place in the world outside. “Get out.”

“And what if I refuse?”

You glare at Muramasa, uncharacteristic loathing welling up from somewhere deep inside despite your calm voice. “Then I will break you.”

At your command the flames around you roar into life, massive cyclones of shimmering blue plasma rolling across the scorched earth. These lands respond to your every whim, they ARE you... and they're enraged. The surging flames advance on Muramasa with blinding speed, nearly incinerating him with the first wave even though he barely managed to escape. His outfit is left alight, and he's forced to roll across the ground to try and starve the flames of oxygen.

“This is why my zanpakuto choose to remain with me,” you tell Muramasa as he rises to his feet, still smoldering and very much disturbed by your show of power. He clearly didn't expect this. “Not rage. Not hatred. But a shared loyalty above all doubt and division. I take it you have been turning zanpakuto against their wielders?”

Muramasa needs not reply. You know your words have struck truth, and his defiant glare tells you he feels no regret for the fact.

“And what will you do?” he spits. “Your victory here is but a small skirmish in the greater battle. I can afford to lose this once, but can you really go on winning on nothing but the power of your own stubbornness?”

“She doesn't have to,” a familiar voice interrupts, and Muramasa topples forward as a sword slices his back open from hip to shoulder.

He glares upward at the new combatant. “You... how dare you!?”

These 8 minutes of waiting for the third post have been among the longest in my life.

Muramasa reels backwards, as if he's been struck by a massive blow despite the fact that it was all in your mind. At your side stands Rosa, fully materialized and enraged. The rest of the meeting hall is in flames, the walls and ceiling are gone and open to the night air. You can feel many shingiami fighting against what seem to be near-clones of their own reiatsu, and you get the sense of general devastation around the Seireitei.

On the floor, Sajin lies in a pool of his own blood. Over him looms a giant, red-skinned demonic figure with flames flickering within its eyes and mouth.

“Tenken!” Muramasa gasps. “We're leaving, now!”

The red beast opens its maw, flames bursting as it seems to speak an incomprehensible tongue. Quite abruptly Tenken is joined by several more of what you can only guess are manifested zanpakuto under Muramasa's control.

Each of them feels like a Captain, fighting at almost full-tilt. Their power is unsettling, and you find yourself weary from your mental exertion and weakened by a lack of your oldest zanpakuto. Though Rosa is still on your side, she's not residing in your sword at the moment.

“This doesn't look good,” Rosa admits quietly. “What do you want to do?”

You lift your fingers, aiming them straight at Muramasa.

“Withdraw all your forces,” you command, knowing that if they do withdraw you likely won't be able to make good on your threat of obliterating the spirit before you with kidō. “Do it or I swear upon all the gods in all the afterlives I'll shred you.”

“You couldn't be serious,” a male zanpakuto in a demon-like mask and ornate armor remarks.

“Seeping crest of turbidity, arrogant vessel of lunacy!” you command, black reiatsu flickering about your outstretched fingers as you threaten the zanpakuto with a fully-incanted Kurohitsugi.

“Senbonzakura!” Muramasa barks. “Don't be a fool! Our mission tonight succeeded, that is sufficient.”

The zanpakuto who Muramasa insists is Byakuya's own Senbonzakura looks towards you, eyes hidden behind that mask of his, and then to Rosa. Her sword is drawn, and she's clearly ready to defend you if anyone proves foolish enough to attack you.

“Very well,” Senbonzakura bows slightly. “If this is your choice, Kobara no Tachi, then you will become our enemy.”

“I was always never your friend, dumbass,” Rosa retorts.

With a flourish of cherry blossoms to cover their retreat, the assembled zanpakuto disappear taking Muramasa with them.

The battles around you end, and Captains and Lieutenants alike assemble at the nearby Sōkyoku hill. It's there that the wounded officers, including Sajin, are treated by Fourth Division, and where initial reports of the battles around the Seireitei begin to trickle in.

It's bad, but not nearly as bad as it could have been had several Divisions not been on deployment. Rangiku has apparently been leading the effort to coordinate a response, and that preparation and leadership has probably saved a lot of lives.

“Well at least there's one bit of good news,” Yoruichi exclaims as she sees you standing with Rosa relatively unharmed. “It seems our new zanpakuto are unaffected.”

“Not surprising,” Kisuke agrees. “They do work differently from a typical shinigami's sword.”

“I'm done for the night,” Rosa yawns. “Let me know when that sack of shit shows up again. I'll keep an eye on the vixen until he's been dealt with.”

With an exchange of bows, Rosa places her hand on your sword and disappears. Once more, your mind and soul are not alone in your spirit. Her presence, despite what she is, comforts you.

As you exchange stories with Yoruichi and Renji, who's one of the few shinigami who apparently hasn't had to face down his own sword tonight, Gin approaches you from behind. His shoulder has been sliced deeply, no doubt by Shinsō. With him is a familiar-looking zanpakuto.

Hard to say. There was a chance you could have finished him off, but the odds were WAY greater that Riku and Rosa would have taken down one or more zanpakuto in exchange for Riku suffering moderate to severe wounds.

If memory serves the Zanpakuto arc appearance was based on the gag that Kurotsuchi offered "upgrades" to zanpakuto, including changing species and gender. The image from that end segment is very similar to how Monkey ended up.

Instead I flipped a coin for how SSQ Zabimaru would appear, and Monkey/Snake ended up being the default appearance.
