Cao swallows nervously as he finds himself pinned beneath the predatory moroi Nitara. She holds his wrists and legs in place as she stares down at him with a hungry, mischievous glare, her green eyes shining in the darkness of the waterway.

"There you are..." she says. "I've been looking all over the city for you, my little thief."

"Ni—Nitara! What? But why—"

She puts a finger to his lips, silencing him. "Shhh. I'm just glad I found you. It's time to cash in that favor you owe me."

"What?" he asks, sweating a bit. "Wh-what is it?"

Her green eyes brighten and she smiles. "I need you to steal something from the shokan at the palace for me."

His eyes widen and he attempts to wriggle free a bit, but the moroi has strength greater than his and holds him tightly. "I can't steal from the shokan. Have you seen them? They'll kill me on sight! For that matter, so will the Kahn and his lackeys!"

She purses her lips as if in pity of him. "Aw, I had no idea. Very well then, I release you from all obligations to me."

"R-really?"

She smiles again. "No." Cao gulps once more as her face nears his. "Now, we can do this the easy, mutual way, or things can get... forceful." Her eyes stare deeply into his as her tongue subtly licks her lip. "Shall I get forceful?"

He trembles ever-so-slightly as he feels her breath on his neck. “What are you going to do?”

“I have my ways of getting what I want,” she says with an air of playful wickedness. “Of course, if you do your job, I can also be very rewarding…”

As she shifts slightly, her chest rubs against his. Cao’s breath catches in his throat and he begins to sweat. Surely he cannot trust a vampire of all creatures, but he’s also caught in her grasp and rightly worried about what she might do to him if he were to refuse…

Cao manages to keep his calm and replies, "What exactly do you want to steal?"

"The former shokan princess, before her father and his were killed, is now the niece of the current king, Duroc. Her name is Jagara. She was part of the royal procession that arrived in Z'unkahrah earlier today."

"What about her?"

"Shokan do not wear much jewelry, so what jewelry they do wear is of great significance. Such as the necklace she wears around her neck... Set within it is a magnificent ruby."

"What is WITH you vampires and necklaces and amulets?" Cao asks.

Nitara gives a throaty laugh. "I assure you, this is not like my own, nor like the one my sister desired... I understand she is dead." Cao gulps, but Nitara merely shrugs. "She made her grave. But I am curious as to how she died, if you don't mind my asking..."

"Ah, but one look at you and I knew," she says with a smile. "You were so bare before me, you might as well have been naked." At that, Cao nervously blushes, which amuses her greatly. "That, and while I searched for you, I heard some... interesting things."

"The ruby is in fact not a ruby at all," Nitara says. "But is merely a protective shell for one of the last few precious drops of true, pure dragon's blood. Not the simple-minded beasts that remain today: the great, ancient and powerful dragons. The shokan hoard such items, as they are heirlooms to their bloodline. But I need the pure blood of dragons."

"Why?"

"Never you mind why," Nitara says, lifting herself up. "You are going to sneak into the palace and take the necklace from Jagara; how you do this makes no difference to me."

"How am I supposed to steal it from a shokan? What if she's still wearing it?"

Nitara shrugs a bit. "Get creative. Here, perhaps these will come in handy," she says, taking out a pair of golden earings.

Cao recognizes them from her lair! He saw them among her things, but did not take them.

"What are those?" he says, acting as though he never saw them.

"Shokan earings," she replies. "Perhaps you can get close to her by offering her a gift. Or you could use them to distract her somehow. Either way, I want that necklace."

"And how am I supposed to get in and get out?" Cao says. "I've never been in the palace. I work on the streets."

"These are problems you'll have to solve yourself," Nitara replies, finally standing up and stepping back. "Impress me with your initiative, little thief."

Cao looks up at her and cannot help but ask, "What did you hear about me?"

"The city is alive with gossip of what happened in the arena," she replies, folding her arms. "Apparently it was quite the show. I'm upset I missed it, honestly."

"And what else?" Cao asks. "Anything about me? Or my sisters?"

"They're hunting you," she says. "Exciting, isn't it?"

Cao picks up the earings from her open palm, looking them over. "Alright... I'll do this, but afterwards we're even, right? I'm not going to wake up to you sucking on my neck, am I?"

"Of course we'll be even," Nitara says before leaning down. "Unless, of course, you'd like to be sucked on..."

Cao looks away, feeling flustered and red. "W-why are you doing that? Why do you keep doing that?"

"I like the way you squirm," she says. "It's cute. Like a scared little puppy..."

Cao tries to ignore her condescending remarks as he gets up to his feet. "Well... I need help getting into the palace. Can't you fly me up?"

"I can't risk being seen," she says. "But I can help you another way."

She reaches behind her and takes out a folded-up cloth. She hands it to him and he unravels it, discovering that it is a brown hooded robe; nondescript and unassuming.

"Should help you keep yourself hidden," she adds.

"I might need some time..." Cao says.

"The shokan are staying the night," Nitara replies. "You have until tomorrow morning."

Cao slips the robe on and she watches with mild amusement. "I'll be waiting here in these tunnels," she says. "But you know... we may be even after this is over, but that doesn't mean our relationship needs to end." He gives her a strange look as she leans against the stone wall, her hips cocked to one side, with a soft, alluring smile.

Cao averts his eyes. "I'll be back when it's done," he says before leaving without any further remarks from her.

He heads down the tunnels and soon regains his sense of direction. The aqueducts are still somewhat difficult to navigate with the damage from the earth elemental warrior shaking the ground in his battle against the warrior of fire, but he knows where to go.

'Nitara wants me to steal a necklace from the shokan... Kano wants me to steal Shao Kahn's helmet and hammer... I already miss stealing just for myself!' Cao thinks.

He pauses and sighs at how much trouble he's gotten himself into lately. Ever since he stole the koins from that guy who stepped off the boat... Kaito was his name? He never even got to cash in those koins or use them to help his sisters.

His sisters... Where are they? 'I hope they're safe...' Cao thinks to himself. 'I wonder if they watched the fight...'

Cao's hand curls up into a fist and he feels like punching a wall. None of this would have happened if it weren't for Draken... He wouldn't be indebted to Nitara nor would he have been caught in the first place if it weren't for that bastard.

Cao knows of Kotal Kahn's palace---everyone in Z'unkahrah knows of it. It is a large ziggurat-like structure built in the heart of the city, where Shao Kahn's citadel once stood. It took much labor to build it, and to this day people are still erecting new buildings and statues of their beloved Emperor.

It sickens him, their devotion to a murderer and a fiend.

Cao has never been inside the palace, which will prove to be a problem. However, with his new gift from Kano, he may be able to slip inside and pull off this heist. He regrets that Sanra isn't here... she was always better at making plans and pulling them off. But with so little time to find this necklace and steal it, he doesn't have time to look for her. He just hopes she's well and looking after Hua, or at least the other way around.

Everyone knows how well-guarded the fortress is. After the Black Dragon's sneak-attack and their theft of the Portal Stone, it'd doubtless that it's perhaps doubly-well-guarded at the moment. He'll have to choose his avenue of approach carefully...

Cao heads up to the surface and keeps his hood low as he searches for a guard. With Kano's device on his wrist, surely he can't fail. He formulates a plan to take on the disguise of a guard and then sneak around the palace temple.

He spies a guard, but unfortunately, he is not alone. They often travel at least in pairs, if not more. Cao shadows them for some time before he thinks he has his advantage.

But just as he scans the guard and the shimmering effect of the hologram covers him, turning his appearance to that of the exact same guard, the man's partner turns around and sees!

He points at Cao and they both begin to approach him, clearly suspicious!

Thinking quickly, Cao picks up a nearby chair and throws it at them, allowing him a moment to run off and lose his pursuers in the crowd.

Remembering the words of the Black Dragon, Cao is careful not to touch anyone as he makes his way towards the palace. He knows that once he is inside, he'll have an easier time and can lose the disguise, but getting past the initial guards will be the difficult part.

The palace has a few entrances.

Cao walks briskly through the main gate, past the guards. He walks with a purpose and does not tarry. He turns towards the gardens and looks upon them for the first time; rows and rows of bushes of exotic looking flowers and plants. There are outworlders here, paid to tend to them, but he doesn't draw their attention as he walks by.

He spies an opening and walks inside and finds his breath nearly stolen. The room adjacent to the gardens is some kind of fountain area, with large plants and tables of fruits, along with pools of clean water. Nobles and richfolk lounge here, idly discussing and eating their fill.

'So this is what the rich spend their time doing,' he thinks to himself. 'While the poor starve and build their statues...'

He maintains his composure as he walks by the nobles and tries to ignore the anger he feels at the injustice of their opulent lifestyle. He needs to find this shokan princess...

As Cao moves past the ornate walls and grand tapestries that line them, he spies a large staircase that leads to the upper level. He approaches it and begins to climb. He immediately freezes when he hears a deep, booming voice coming from the top of the stairs.

He looks up and sees none other than King Duroc descending the stairs alongside a female shokan of equally intimidating nature. "He seemed greatly upset," he says to her, not looking at Cao.

"Indeed. This is a bold move by the Black Dragon, even by Kano's standards," she replies. "Kotal will expend much in his efforts to regain what was lost."

Cao immediately moves to one side to let them pass. He looks back at them as they continue on downwards. "He has yet to ask for assistance," the king says. "His pride is great."

Cao doesn't listen any further and quickly moves up the steps. He stops near the top and looks around; the second level is not as large as the bottom floor, but there are still plenty of areas to search. He sniffs the air and detects a faint wisp of incense coming from one direction. He can hear faint music coming from another.

Cao follows the sound of music, but also finds a balcony leading in the same direction. He steps outside and looks out over the setting sun of Z'unkahrah; it truly is an impressive sight. He fails to notice someone approaching him from behind as he nears the source of the music.

"Guard."

Cao nearly jumps as he turns around and finds himself staring at a shokan woman's chest. He looks up into her stern face and fights back a gulp as her eyes seem to burn into him.

'Oh no, this is it, I've been found out,' he immediately thinks, looking at her unamused stance with one pair of her four arms folded and the others on her hips.

He also notices her rather singular choice of thin attire...

She speaks again, her voice commanding and powerful. "Jagara is nearly done with her playing and the handmaiden has run off somewhere. Find her and ensure that her room is properly prepared."

"Y-yes, ma'am!" Cao says, trying hard to sound deeper.

Her eyes narrow a bit and he worries again that she has found him out, but then the tall warrior woman turns around and walks off. Cao lets out a soft sigh as she leaves; he has to admit, despite the fear she struck in him, the setting sun looks nice on her backside...

She mentioned that Jagara is nearly done playing. Is she the one making the music?

Cao sticks his head into a nearby archway and looks inside, finding a dimly-lit room with nobles and shokan visitors sitting on pillows and listening to the music provided by a shokan sitting on a raised dais. She isn't like the last shokan; not as large or intimidating. She wears an orange dress, with more jewelry, such as bracelets and earings and... a necklace with a ruby!

That must be Jagara! She sits on a plush chair with her eyes closes as all four of her hands are used to play two golden harps at the same time. Cao finds himself almost entranced by the sight, captivated much like the rest of her audience is, as she plays both instruments in harmony with her three-fingered hands gliding across the strings with grace. He's heard of the shokan and imagined them all as massive, powerful warriors, like the last few he saw---but she seems almost gentle.

She finishes her show and the audience claps appreciatively. She smiles and bows her head. Everyone stands up and moves to compliment her performance and speak to her.

Cao watches Jagara finish socializing with the others before she leaves the room and walks down the hall. He follows her as she walks to her room, which appears to be the source of the incense he smelled earlier.

She walks into the room and places the harps on a table before walking into another room connected to hers.

Cao walks into the room and looks around. She hasn't taken off the necklace yet.

Suddenly, the holographic image around him begins to fade! Cao slaps his wrist console a few times but the image still dies.

He looks up as Jagara's shadow approaches the doorway of the room.

Cao looks around the room and sees almost no hiding places, before he spies the strange ceiling tiles with are slightly uneven in nature. He silently runs at one of the walls and jumps up, grabbing onto one of them and swinging upwards before holding himself in place, pushing with his hands and his feet.

He finds himself staring down at the floor and gritting his teeth as Jagara walks into the room and looks around for the source of the noise but finds nothing. The shokan girl looks around a bit before settling down onto some of the pillows in the center of the room.

She reaches over and adjusts one of the nearby sticks of incense, sighing a bit. He looks down at her and sees she is still wearing the necklace. Damn, he was hoping she'd have taken it off by now...

She closes her eyes and puts her four palms together and appears to steady her breathing. She's meditating, it seems, as she softly hums amidst the incense. Cao focuses on keeping still as he considers his next move. He was hoping she'd leave the room again so he could drop down without being heard, but if she's meditating, who knows how long he can last while being stuck up here...

Cao silently takes a deep breath and tightens his core as he holds himself up on the ceiling. He focuses intently and stays in place.

Jagara, meanwhile, continues her meditation. He watches as she suddenly stops, taking a deep gasp. She's apprently deep in thought about something, because she begins to softly shed tears. She brings a hand up to her eyes and wipes them clean.

"Jagara," a voice calls out from the doorway, surpising them both. The shokan woman that Cao saw earlier walks in.

"Sheeva, I--" she begins, trying to hide her face. "I'm sorry I didn't come find you, but--"

Sheeva sits down next to her and places a hand on her shoulder. "Calm yourself, young one. It is alright."

"I'm sorry," she says again, wiping her eyes. "I don't mean to be like this."

"Stop," Sheeva says with a soft tone. "I have told you before, it is not a weakness to shed tears."

"I know," Jagara replies with a nod. "I just... it was never enough. Never enough."

Sheeva pulls Jagara close for a hug. "He is gone, Jagara. You needn't let his ignorance cloud your mind."

Cao would almost find this moment touching were it not for the fact that him holding himself up could mean life or death.

Cao closes his eyes and pushes himself harder than he's ever pushed himself before and he continues to remain in place.

Sheeva and Jagara, still unaware of his presence, continue their moment. "Remember that you can speak to me about anything," Sheeva tells her. She pulls back and looks Jagara in her watery eyes. "You are not weak because you are not a warrior. You were the only one who stood with Duroc when he was in hiding and showed greater strength than any other shokan would have in your place."

Jagara nods and smiles. "Thank you, Sheeva."

They hug once more before parting, with Sheeva standing up. "I am going to retire to my quarters now," she says. "Be ready to leave in the morning."

Jagara nods and watches her fellow shokan leave. Sheeva pauses in the doorway and looks back. "For the shokan," she tells the younger girl.

"For the shokan," she says, her voice a little stronger.

Sheeva leaves and Jagara gets up to head into the next room to change, giving Cao a chance to get down.

"You were listening?" she asks after a moment.

"That was a mistake," Cao says. "A huge misunderstanding. In fact, I met the guy, he's great! Do you know him?"

"Yes, I do," she says. "But wouldn't he have spoken out on your account?"

"I'm sure he tried," Cao continues to lie. "I mean, knowing him and how good he is. But Kotal hates thieves and wouldn't hear me when I tried to explain that it's all a misunderstanding. Kotal's pride wouldn't allow it."

Jagara hesitates again. "Well... That does certainly sound like Kaito and Kotal..." She looks at him in a slightly different light. "What's your name?"

"Cao," he introduces himself. "And I know you haven't told me yours, but it's Jagara, right? I've heard of you. I mean, there are stories about how pretty you are and all, but I have to say, they pale in comparrison to the real thing."

She brings up a hand to stiffle a blush. "Flattery won't earn you anything from me," she says. "How do I truly know you're telling the truth? For that matter, why are you hiding here, instead of anywhere else?"

Cao wracks his brain for a reasonable lie or, perhaps, her reaction to being told the truth.

She turns her head and is about to call for them, but hesitates for a moment. He can't imagine what's going through mind.

Jagara brings a hand up to her mouth, clearly conflicted over Cao's words. "I'm... sorry," she says softly. "But, I should turn you in... I don't know if you're even still telling the truth."

He finds himself rolling down the side of the ziggurat! All around him, he hears the sounds of guards shouting about a thief in Jagara's chambers!

Cao makes it to the gate where two guards try to leap at him and grab him. He leaps up and slams their heads together before rolling past them, with other guards piling up on them.

Cao takes a breather before looking around and realizing he just jumped into someone's personal dojo in the estate of a wealthy nobleman. The only other sole figure is an armored man with a sword practicing on a dummy.

"What is the meaning of this?!" he demands to know, pointing his sword in Cao's direction. He hears the guards. "Ah hah! Stay where you are!" he shouts as he runs across the room towards him!

Cao turns around and runs up the wall, avoiding a sword swipe! He leaps off and lands behind the man, grabbing a nearby ornate chair and cracking it over his helmeted skull!

As Cao runs to the other side of the room, he knocks over training dummies and weapon racks to keep him at bay. Hachiman manages to pick himself up and chase after Cao, but the agile thief leaps out the window and out onto the city streets, heading towards the slums!

As he runs, people take notice and hear the calls of the guards. He knows that he won't have much time left before they corner him unless he can find a way out; a disguise, a good hiding spot, a path underground...

Cao spies a break in the stone floor behind a building, leftover damage from the elemental battle, leading down into the aqueducts! He runs down towards it and jumps inside, landing in ankle-deep flowing water.

The guards charge in after him, chasing him through the tunnels. As Cao dashes around a corner, a hand reaches out and grabs him by the wrist and pulls him into the shadows. Nitara slams a hand over Cao's mouth.

She summons a sudden cloud of bats, who screech and fly in a swarm towards the guards. They are startled and fall back, scrambling to get away from the winged biting horde that has been set upon them.

Cao's heart pounds in his chest as he takes rapid deep breaths. Nitara holds him close and whispers in his ear. "Shhh... Shhh... Calm down, little thief..." she silently soothes him.

Cao calms his breathing and relaxes a bit. He turns to look at Nitara, who gives him a smile. "Did you succeed?" she asks.

"The shokan hate me. Are you happy?" he asks.

She shrugs. "I care little for how the shokan feel. Let them be angry; an angry opponent is far easier to predict than one who is calm and collected."

Cao faces her fully as she lets go and steps back. "But, I take it you were successful, yes?"

"I was," Cao says. "But it wasn't pretty and I wouldn't be surprised if that shokan princess hates me now."

"Her feelings are irrelevent to my designs," Nitara says with a shrug. "Now... if you would," she says with a smile, holding out her hand.

"Hold it," Cao says, pulling the ruby back a bit. "Tell me what your plan is."

Nitara sighs. "Very well. I intend to take this vial of dragon's blood, cross the sea, enter a blasted and forsaken ruined land of ash and soot, enter the heart of an ancient volcano, imbibe the pure blood of the dragon to grant me temporary supernatural resistance to fire, submerge myself within the molten lava, and retrieve a mystical orb containing the essence of my lost realm: Vaeternus, the home of my vampire race. Smashing this orb will restore it and separate it from Outworld, returning my people to power and restoring my realm to its rightful glory."

She folds her arms and cocks an eyebow. "Any questions?"

Cao stands dumbfounded. "I... Uh, I wasn't expecting you to tell me so much..." he says. "I... don't know what to say..."

Nitara shrugs. "You don't need to say anything. Just hand me the blood."

"Well, so long as you don't bother me or my sisters," Cao says.

He hands it over to her and she smiles broadly. "Yes... Finally. Soon, all too soon, my dream will be realized..."

She approaches Cao, putting the ruby away behind her. "I have you to thank, my little thief..." she says, her fingers trailing up his arms to wrap around his neck. Cao grows nervous as she slowly pins him up against the wall. "This is where our relationship can end... or, if you like, we can go to the next level."

Cao gulps. "W-what exactly would that be?"

"I helped you, you helped me, we're even," she says. "We could be equals, you know... I could make you my partner. In many more ways than one. You'd have helped restore my kind to their rightful place, you would live a comfortable life in my... no, our, new realm. And you would live eternal... as a moroi, like myself."

Cao's eyes go wide. "You w-want to turn me into a vampire?"

She smiles, showing her fangs. "One of many things I could do to you..." she says, licking her lips. She presses up against him even closer and his body grows hot as her supple flesh presses against his chest.

He stares into her eyes and sees her waiting for an answer.

Then... a voice... echoing in his mind.

He blinks and shakes his head. 'What? What was that?' he thinks.

>"She seeks to manipulate you further. Becoming a moroi shackles you to an existence of feeding upon others in a never-ending cycle of bestowing death and misery upon your victims."

Ashrah... She is speaking to him somehow!

Cao's brow furrows and he takes a deep, steadying breath. "No."

Nitara is a bit surprised. "No?"

"No. I refuse. I don't want to be a vampire."

She tilts her head. "You realize I am offering you immortality? Eternal youth and vitality? A place in my new realm?"

"Enjoy it. I don't want it."

He looks away from her, not wanting to stare into her eyes. She lets out a small, impressed chuckle. "Little fool..." she whispers.

She suddenly reaches up and grabs his neck, lifting him off the ground! Cao gasps as she brings him to eye level as he grabs her wrist and tries to wrench himself free, but cannot!

"I don't like to be denied," she says with a frightening glare. "It only makes what I don't have all the more... appetizing!"

She opens her mouth and hisses at him, displaying her fangs. Cao prepares to defend himself when she... lets go and drops him.

He coughs and looks up at her as she stares down at him. "A pity..." she whispers. "But perhaps, one day... You might still have some use left in you. No sense in killing you."

She leans down and grabs him by the collar. "But I will steal one thing from you, my little thief..."

To his surprise, she presses her lips firmly against his, passionately opening herself up and robbing him of breath as his heart races in panic and excitement, his body betraying his mind. She parts from him just as quickly, licking her lips. "Pity..." she repeats herself. "It would have been fun."

She turns around and walks off, pausing only briefly. She turns over her shoulder, and perhaps, out of some sense of further affection, she adds, "I found your sisters. The village of Sun Do. Southeast."

Before he can reply, so out of breath is he, she steps into the darkness and vanishes from sight.

Cao touches his trembling lips. He's kissed girls a few times before, but never anything like that, and certainly never with a woman like her.

So, his sisters are in Sun Do. The village is still within Kotal Kahn's empire, existing on its periphery, alongside the coast and south of the Kove. He's never spent much time there, but he knows its mayor is a woman known as Li Mei.

But something else is on Cao's mind: revenge. Draken sold him and his sisters out. 'This is what I get for trusting him,' Cao thinks to himself. 'Not again. No third chances. I should've strangled that son of a bitch in the catacombs...'

The catacombs... That's the last place he saw Ashrah. Maybe he could pick up her trail from there. He remembers his dream about her death, but surely that was just a dream...
