“Is this what you really want?”

That wasn’t what she must’ve been expecting. At her startled look, you give her a smile of your own. “I’m no stranger when it comes to changes. I mean look at me: from medical school and late night study sessions to a cloak and dagger organization that has me going up against demons. I’m used to them, and I’m not particularly adverse to them in any way shape or form.”

That seems to put some levity in her smile. “Yeah. We’ve come a long way from dimly lit and creepy hospital rooms, haven’t we? And who could forget getting chased by all sorts of nasties?”

“That’s right. We have come a very long way in these last few months.” You chortle. “Now you said that you wanted to protect me, right? I’m not going to force you into making a decision. If this is what you really think is best, then I fully support you. Because no matter what happens, you’re still my Pixie at the end of the day.”

That did it. Pixie scrunches her face up and tries to hold back the waterworks much like your siblings do whenever they’re either really sad or happy. Tries to, at any rate. Because she can’t hold her composure for more than three seconds before the floodgates open.

“MAAASSSTTEEERRR!!!” She cries out, catching you with a sudden and very tight hug around the face. You laugh in spite of yourself, giving her a quick pat on the head before she eventually pries herself off of you. She sniffs once, twice, and grins determinedly in spite of the tears lingering in her eyes.

“Okay, then! I'll do it! I’ll be the best new demon ever!” She declares, imperiously as her body begins to glow. “And we’re still gonna have lots of fun! The enemy’s gonna have to get through me before they can even think of hurting you!”

The sudden flash of white light instinctively makes you close your eyes and turn away. But it doesn’t take too long for the ambient light to drop back to tolerable levels.

The most noticeable difference that you notice is that she’s gotten taller, at least a half-foot in height. You figure that she’d come up to at least your lower thigh as opposed to your shin. Her wings are sharper, and do a better job of catching the sunlight far over the horizon.

And that was just leaving out the…kimono-thing she was wearing. You’re not sure what it is. Maybe you should ask Victoria for the finer details when she gets back. But you digress.

Other than that…Pixie still looked the same.

“I’m High Pixie of the Fairy Clan!” The demon introduces herself, in a dead-similar voice to that of her previous iteration. “It’s nice to meet you again, Master!”

If it’s any comfort, High Pixie seems to be just as surprised as you are. She blinks momentarily before looking down, and starts patting the fabric with inquisitive hands. “What the hey? Where the heck did this come from?! There was supposed to be armor! A new haircut! What kind of sick joke is this?!”

She shoots you an irritated look as you start laughing at your confusion. “Hey, you would be confused as well if your evolution didn’t go as planned! Like…oh gods, what happened? Is this the latest fashion trend among High Pixies?!”

“Probably just a cosmic hiccup,” You reply. “But, at any rate…it’s nice to meet you again, Pixie. No, High Pixie. Thank you for changing for me. Now, let’s get back to work. We’re burning daylight here.”

The Fairy sighs and slumps mid-air in resignation. “…just promise me that you’ll get me electric blue hair dye, okay?”

You mentally apologize on her mangling of the French phrase to all unseen French before replying, “That it did. Along with ‘Devil Summoner’ and ‘release’, which I take for it to mean ‘release me’, which I’m NOT going to do, and ‘threads of sunlight’ and ‘threads of shadow’.”

“Boss, I don’t know what those mean, save for the fact that it’s a slightly more intelligent beast,” Brady argues. “That makes it more dangerous, right? Normally, it would keep on struggling instead of beggin’ for its life.”

For a perilous moment, it looked like the spell wouldn’t take. The white light that is the Each-Uisage writhes and thrashes even wilder as the spell slowly envelops its body in a blue aura. Several forms and appearances flash out from the white light: a horse, a muscular man, a great winged albatross…

But then, the spell finally grips the monster in an inescapable hold. It suddenly collapses onto the surface of the ocean, completely and utterly unconscious. It’s returned to its horse form, with the harpoon miraculously still embedded deep within the beast’s neck. And tethered to the boat?

Somewhere, up there, someone is either smiling or laughing heartily at your expense. Probably both, considering your rotten luck.

But you were almost certain that there was something else within the myriad images that flashed before you…

It was only for the briefest of moments, but you definitely saw it. Or rather, her. Out of the many forms the Each-Uisage flashed before your eyes, you’re sure that one of them was that of a young girl, scared and terrified beyond acceptable standards.

Dilated eyes, mouth drawn back in a silent scream and hands reaching out, begging, grasping in futile attempts for someone to free her from the myriad forms she was trapped in.

But just before you were able to get too many details, it had reverted back into its equestrian form.

You hear someone collapse to the ground. Fitz cradles her head in her hands, shaking violently. “I can hear her screaming,” She whispers. “Her voice is in my head, screaming over and over again, Helpmehelpmehelpmehelpme-”

Victoria manages to snap out of her stupor, and casts her eyes towards you with an unspoken question. You nod shakily as you confirm that yes, you in fact did see the girl that flashed before your eyes.

“What the fucking hell?” Brady moves towards Fitz, hesitating only slightly before squatting down to check on her. “Jesus Christ, what happened?!”

Victoria looks at him as if he’d grown an extra head. “What do you mean you didn’t see it?!” She demands, hands clenching at the air by her hips. “I saw it, they saw it, how come you didn’t see it?! The girl in the demon?”

He hesitates before tossing his hands up in the air. “All I saw was the bird, and that’s it! If you saw a girl in there, I’ll believe you, but don’t go shouting at me-”

They continue to argue as you try to puzzle out what you just saw. A girl? Trapped within the demon? The other shapes looked demonic enough; even the man form had an unearthly demeanor about it for the brief duration you saw it.

Not for the girl. Definitely not her. Pure terror, and nothing less than that. What was that doing in the demon?

But the question still remains: how did it all tie back to Madison?

You shout for Murdock to get you back to shore as soon as possible. Whatever Fitz got hit with, it doesn't seem to be wearing off, and you've got two folks in the quarters that are in desperate need of medical attention.

Within a few minutes, the mysterious man sets the boat as fast as he can back towards land, boat engine failure be damned. He shouts that you'll be back there within the half hour.

You hear him choke on something and the sound of the phone hitting the ground. A series of thuds and wheezing briefly dominates the headset sound before you hear him pick the phone up. “Brown, what the ever-living fuck are you talking about-”

“So you know the Kelpie we were pursuing? Yeah, it isn’t a kelpie…”

You can almost see him shaking his head and rubbing his temple. “You are either the bravest or dumbest rookie I’ve had the misfortune of having under my wing, Brown. Your actions are writing checks that we can’t afford to spend…I kid, I kid, but seriously. What you just did put you and your team in danger. Explain yourself.”

“I couldn’t kill it without knowing the full truth of why this happened,” You explain. “I’m almost a doctor. You have to understand why the illness happened, not just slap a band aid on it and hope for the best.”

“Don’t get smart on me, boy…look. Sometimes, you have to sacrifice knowing everything to do your job. Some of us don’t have time to play detective. More often than not, we’re just exterminators; we do what we have to do, don’t ask too many questions, and leave in the hopes of never coming back. But what the fuck is it with you and getting yourself into deeper piles of shit?”

“What can I say?” You dryly retort, checking to make sure that the demon is still firmly strapped to the deck of the boat as tight as you can possibly get it. Napaea and Tagata Manu alternate using sleep spells to keep it under. “When I’m up shit creek without the paddle, God sends a hurricane. So what the fuck are we supposed to do?”

He picks up almost immediately, and doesn’t even wait for pleasantries to be exchanged before inquiring for an update on your part. After a brief exposition, he makes a noise of approval. “I’m not mad that you decided to go on without me,” He calmly explains. “As a matter of fact, I’m lauding your quick decision-making. You managed to save two souls with your quick response.”

“Thanks. So what’s been going on at your end?”

“I finished tracking down all of the victims, or at least as many as I could find. And I can confirm that they have all donated to the charity. There’s the solid proof you’re looking for, and that definite connection to the case. The demon is without a doubt connected to the sorority and this…Madison girl of which you speak.”

“Yep. Anything else you want to say before I hang up? We’re almost at the dock.”

“I made a new friend in the process of investigating the victims, one who’s proved to be very adept at pointing out hidden things. I have no doubts that our investigation into the sorority will continue to prove beneficial. Shall I meet you at the dock?”

“Yeah. You do that. Time to get the party back together.”
