You are Kane Gerric, a Miralukan teen from the slums of Jerrist IV. Facing the prospect of starvation, you dragged your childhood friend on a foolish mission to rob the richest man on the planet. Narrowly escaping a horrible death, the pair of you have found yourselves stranded on the very highest landing pad of his palatial spire.

With your wits, a pair of stolen blasters and a power you can't understand, you must find a way to escape five hundred floors of the best security credits can buy, alive and intact. Oh, and it wouldn't hurt to 'liberate' a few trinkets along the way.

The last few rays of sun ebb from sight, fading below the lip of the landing platform. Heart pounding out of your chest, you tentatively approach the landing pad's access door. The hiss of the automatic door nearly causes you to jump out of your skin.

To your relief, there's nobody waiting for you behind it. Ahead lies the most fabulously opulent staircase you've ever seen. The floor is carpeted in some lush red fabric, so deep that your feet begin to sink as you tread downwards. The walls and ceiling are made from some pale white stone, threaded with golden veins that shimmer in the low light that emanates from crystals set into the walls at regular intervals. You reach out with your mind, trying to discern what lies ahead. A lobby of some kind, wide and round, with wide beds of lush foliage spread around the outside. Although your vision is hazy, there are three figures waiting at the far side of the lobby. Two are boxy, utilitarian, and armed with blaster rifles but the third shimmers like a silver statue. Droids, then. Beyond them, a pair of elevators are set into the wall - one golden filigreed, the other plain and unadorned. The silver figure seems to be berating the other two, fussily throwing its arms to and fro.

You turn to Choni. "There's three droids ahead. I think two of them are security, I don't know about the third. Should I blast them?" The Twi'lek looks grim. "Can't we sneak by? Or maybe we can talk them out of blasting us? I've worked with my dad's droids. They're pretty stupid."

You press your spare blaster into her hands. "Just in case, okay?"

"You infernal rustbuckets! The master will scrap us all for sure!"

"Why? Accidents happen." grates the first security droid.
"Roger-roger" confirms the second. "The master will understand."

"No, I am sure he will not understand that you felt the need to shoot at a man-servant." chides the protocol droid. "When he hears of this, we'll be broken down into spare parts! We'll sent to the Spice Mines of Kessel. Disintegrated even!"

Seeing your chance, you and Choni slip across the path, dropping into the dense bushes. A pungent but sweet odor fills your nostrils, as you begin to crawl your way around the outside of the room.

"The 'so-called' manservant was acting suspiciously. My programming told me to terminate him."
"Shooting servants is not a part of your programming! Have you any idea how much trouble this will cause?"
"The master will not be upset. The master likes us very much." The second droid ventures. "One dead organic will not change that."

"What makes you think that? Organics stick together. Droids mean nothing to them, especially obsolete models like the pair of you!"

"Watch your tone, butler". The first droid steps in, raising his blaster threateningly. "I'll have you know I served in the Clone Wars."
"Now just look here! The master may have purchased you out of misplaced sentimentality, but he will not tolerate such defective behavior. I shall see to it that you both have your memories wiped immediately."

Under the cover of the squabble, you're nearly clear of the room. Suddenly, Choni's foot taps the stem of a bush, sending the leaves rustling wildly.

"What's that noise?!" The first security droid motions to the second. "You check it out, I'll cover you."
Thinking fast, you hurl a rock to the other side of the room. "No, over there!" The two droids turn around and edge their way towards the bushes. "Come out with your hands up!"

Seeing your chance, you slip into the

The pair of you squeeze into the cramped service elevator and punch the button for the lowest floor.

"That was close!" Choni pants. "I thought we were going to be target practice for a second there."
You grin. "What? Were you really worried about a couple of clankers like that?"

The elevator shakes, and you find yourselves pressed up against each other - her eyes in front of your empty sockets. You expect her to recoil, but for some reason, she doesn't.

"Hey, Kane. I was just thinking-"
The Twi-lek gets cut off by the hiss of the elevator doors.

"HEY, WHAT ARE YOU TWO DOING!"
A wave of heat rushes into the elevator. You're suddenly overwhelmed by the bustle of the kitchens. Around you, hundreds of aliens bustle to and fro, carrying steaming trays that emit weird scents.

A bulky chef stands before you, arms pressed against his sides. "You don't get paid to flirt, okay? I'm busting a gut out here, and you service guys are just goofing off. This party isn't going to run itself!"

He holds out two trays. One is loaded with squirming worms, wriggling their way through a bed of purple vegetables. The other is far heavier, weighed down with raw meat.

"Canapes need serving. Floor 50." He sighs. "And the Nexu needs feeding. The bosses study - floor 200."

The chef grunts. "I'd take the Nexu as well. Beats party guests."

He shoves the tray into your hands and you barely get time to react before the elevator goes rocketing off again.

The doors open onto an enormously wide, circular room. Dimly lit and wrapped around with darkened glass, you can just about make out the city lights twinkling below. The floor dips down into four tiers, rippling like molten rock. Each level is packed to the brim with cabinets, statues. On the furthest side of the room, a plain white desk sits before an immense fireplace.

"Hey, check out these guys!" Choni pulls you over to look at a towering pair of grim faced statues, hooded and cloaked. "They need to lighten up a little, don't you think?" The longer you focus on them, the more real they seem, as if some force was infusing them with life. "They look just like you, grumpy guts!" She tries to pull the same face, then falls about laughing.

Why would Nexu be in a room like this?
>>
"So, what IS a Nexu anyway?" Somewhere in the back of your mind a few neurons start to tingle.

She shrugs. "I don't know, but it's got to be hungry." She shakes the tray. "My mouth is watering just looking at all this meat! So here's the deal - we split up, and whoever finds it first shouts as loud as they can."

You nod. "That sounds fair. I'll check out that desk over there, you have a look around here. See if you can find something good. We'll meet somewhere in the middle."

You quietly pad your way across the room, moving from staircase to staircase, heading down, towards the desk.

You pass a cabinet and freeze with fear as you notice a band of white figures pointing blasters at you. Several panic filled seconds later, you come to realize that they're not moving. Dummies clad with chipped and stained white armor and posed as if they were going to battle. Weird.

There's a feeling you just can't shake. That you're being watched. In absolute silence, you press on.

Another cabinet catches your eye - homespun brown robes, scorched and stained, yet lovingly cleaned and displayed. What was Jeergan Kal's deal anyway?

You make it onto the bottom floor, moving between trophy cases filled with droid parts and worn out blasters. Behind you, you notice more of the hooded statues, spaced out in a ring. As you approach the desk, the feeling of apprehension continues to grow. Once you step into that white light, you'll be visible all the way across the room.

Just where is that Nexu?

A guttural purr sends a shiver of fear down your spine.

Heart in your mouth, you continue to approach the desk.

You peer nervously over the top, into the mouth of the fireplace. Empty.

A copper pyramid floats just above the surface of the desk, trapped in a blue tractor beam. Hypnotically spinning, it draws in your attention.

You hear a snarl, and frantically spin. Tail lashing like a serpent, a monstrous feline approaches, jaws dripping with saliva, eyes glowing in the half-light.

So that's what a Nexu looks like.

You carefully raise the meat in front of you, trying your hardest to force back your fear. The Nexu pads closer, its presence suddenly overwhelming your senses with pure, primal ferocity. The aura of the beast is overpowering. How did you fail to sense it?

It's so close now that you can nearly feel its breath on your skin. Its head follows the meat, tracking it from side to side.

You do your level best to think positive thoughts. You are not afraid. This is just a game that the two of you are playing. Nexu drool seeps into the carpet in front of you. You pull your arm back and fling the meat as far as you can, lobbing it deep into the maze of artifacts that occupies the floor. The Nexu bounds after it, yapping with excitement.

The pyramid. You reach out to grasp it, then recoil your hand. There's a pain in your arm as if you've been burned and a more ominous foreboding in your mind. Pouring your senses into it, you feel a similar aura to the one the statues gave out, but painful, twisted somehow.

You grab it again, this time trying to ignore the pain. A crash rings across the room as the Nexu tears through a display cabinet.

A memory forces itself to the front of your mind. The tang of blood in your mouth from a split lip.

"Choni, we are getting out of here!"

You make it up the first staircase, staggering like a drunk. Another memory - the gnawing hunger of an empty belly. The pain of starvation.

Choni makes it to you, pale faced. "What's wrong Kane? You don't look right."
"I'm... fine..." You manage to force the words out, unsteady though you are. Your head is pounding now, blood rushing through your system.
The stench of garbage in your nostrils. A starving Rodian crouched by a bin. You offer some of your ration bar, and he snatches it from you.

"Kane, stay with me!" You fall sideways against the soldiers, the clari-crystalline fronting of the cabinet shattering under your weight. The troopers fall like the dead.

Just a little further...
>>
Just one more staircase and you'll reach the lift. The growls of the Nexu are replaced with the snapping of jaws at flesh.

"Kane, you have to tell me what's happening!" Choni is screaming in your ear, dragging you forwards. Just keep your legs moving.

The smell of death. A body left in the gutter. The fear as your mother looms over you, arm outstretched.

The time you fell in the river and nearly drowned. The feeling of air seeping from your lungs. The cool inevitability of dying.

A rushing in your ears as you fall to your death, the city spreading out below you.

"Stay with me!". The ping of elevator doors. A strangers voice calling out. Then blackness.

Mistakes were made. Have sith holocrons ever worked out well for anyone?

You are cradled between two arms, tranquil and still. It's a feeling you want to last forever. Maybe you should stay this way forever. Gentle breath on your cheek, and a voice softly calling you.

"Kane, can you hear me? Wake up, talk to me."

A familiar face, a blue face just above you.

And one you don't know. To your side. Your consciousness fully returns. You are on the top landing of the study, where you fell. Your head is still stinging, but the pain is starting to fade. The pyramid is lying by your feet, seemingly harmlessly. It seems the faces on it have shifted somehow - new characters forcing their way to the surface.

"You're awake? Hey, how are you hanging in there?" The unfamiliar voice again. You turn your attention away from Choni, to the strange new person. A tousle headed boy - familiar in some way.

He gives off an awkward aura, a mixture of friendliness and reticence.

"Are you okay buddy?" He holds out a hand. "I'm Mace."

"You're the guy from that holo-vid." Certainty begins to creep into your voice. "The one with Jeergan Kal."

Mace looks sheepish. "I guess you caught my birthday message. Choni was telling me about how you're from the city. I've never met anyone from the city before. My father, um, forbids it."

He starts to blush, his aura filling with embarassment. "I had no idea that they could be so, um... pretty..."

"...and I had no idea a rich kid could be nice..." Choni begins to turn magenta. Don't they realize how foolish they look? You feel a spike of annoyance.

"So, what hit me?" The pair snap their heads away from each other.

"Uh, nothing." Choni states. "You came crashing up those stairs, looking like you'd been poisoned or something. There was that weird box in your hand, only looked... fiery. It was hurting you somehow, but you wouldn't let go of it. Then you passed out and it dropped out of your hand."

"Yeah, that's all I saw." Mace eagerly spouts. "I came up here to get away from everything, spend some time with Arla, and there you were. There was like, red light coming out of the box - that's my father's Holocron. He says that the Jedi used to use it, but I had no idea it actually did anything. And the light was coming out of your eyes too. Uh, eyeholes, I mean. Arla was tearing the whole place apart, something must have really set her off. Then you just collapsed, and we've been waiting for you to get up for the last ten minutes."
He leans in closer. "So, what's the deal with your eyes? Choni tells me that you can still see. What's that like?"

"What's it like to have eyes? Honestly, I can't describe it to you." You try your best to remember your parents teachings on the Miraluka way. "On the old planet, they say that we are gifted by the gods. We can see Ashla and Bogan - the impact that the gods make in the Greater Force. And I can 'see' in any direction, everything that's happening around me. Sometimes it gets really hard to focus though. I can see just the same in dark or light - well, if it's dark I can't see colours, but I know where everything is. And if I try hard enough, I can tell how people are feeling, what they're thinking. My mom says that everyone is connected through the Living Force, but that can't be true. If everyone was connected, they wouldn't do such horrible things to each other."

"Whoa! The Force!" Mace grasps your hand. "That's amazing! You're like a Jedi!"

You shake your head sadly. "I'm not a Jedi. The sight is just something that we're born with. When the Republic fell, they say that the Empire came after the Miraluka in the purge as well. People couldn't tell the difference between our natural gift, and the Jedi's training."

"That's so sad." Choni sniffs. "Why didn't you tell me any of this before?"

You sigh. "I guess it wasn't important. All that other stuff is way too big for me, for this world of ours."

"But you did something with the Holocron, right?" Mace continues to press you. "Did you use the Force on that as well?"

Uncertainty creeps into your mind. Too many things have happened in the last few hours for you to fully understand. Osi's gun jumping into your hands; the pressure under your feet when you fell; the feeling of life in the statues; the voices in your head. Maybe there really is more happening than you know. For a few moments it seemed like the box and you were connected, in a way that was deeper than you could understand. You were trying to read it, and it was trying to read you.
>>
"Anyway, you should come and meet my father! He'll be honored to meet a real life Jedi!" Mace leans in conspiratorially. "I know that you guys are supposed to be bad, but he's always had a soft spot for the Jedi, since he was a boy. He grew up watching holo-reports of all the Masters, going out and saving the galaxy! He even named me after his favorite, but I guess you figured that out already."

The boy's cheeriness is starting to grate on you.

"The Jedi betrayed the Republic. Nobody should want to be a Jedi." Your anger begins rushing back. How can this boy and his father sit in their ivory tower, playing at being heroes while robbing the poor of everything they have? The trinkets filling the room would be enough to feed the whole city for a week. You just want to go now, to get away from these idiots and their toys. "I don't want to see that space-slug."

"Please Kane, be patient." Choni is at your side, pleading with you. "If we talk to him, we might be able to get him to understand we're all going through. We might be able to get him to help us, especially if Mace talks to him. We'd be doing right by so many people. We could make so many things better."

"Why would he listen to us?" You're fuming at Choni. How can she be so blind? She's lived under Jeergan Kals yoke her whole life, and now her opinion of him just suddenly changes? Why, because his kid was nice to her?

"He'd happily watch this world burn if it made him a few extra credits to spend on his toys. Raising a complaint would see us dead, like those strikers. I'm past wishing for things to just work themselves out." You snatch the Holocron from the floor. "I'm taking this, and I'm leaving."

The golden elevator doors swing wide for you. "Get the next one."

"Wait!" Choni calls out too late to stop you.

The doors open onto a crowded room. Everywhere you look, you're overwhelmed by tasteless, opulent displays of wealth. The stink of blubbery flesh, and barely concealed lust in your nostrils, as fat nobles cavort with half-naked dancing girls.

Then a presence hits you, completely and utterly overwhelming. Animal in its ferocity, yet cunning, a sheer hateful potency that almost physically pushes you back. You shift your attention around the room, searching for the source. A woman, tall and strikingly beautiful. She turns to face you, and you feel her gaze pierce right through you, seeing right through to your inner depths. Then she turns away, to the one person you least wanted to see. Jeergan Kal, drink in hand, no doubt planning to lecture her on some tedious point of trivia.

You turn from them, and elbow your way through the crowd, shaking off drunken nobles, as they clamor at you to be brought food.

You're nearly at the exit. Your hackles are raised by a sudden surge of bloodlust. Hush falls across the room. Kal has fallen to his knees, choking for breath. You feel a heavy pressure upon your entire body. The security droids are forcing their way through the crowd to their fallen master. In your pocket, you can feel the Holocron begin to spin. Why can't any one else feel what is going on?
>>
The woman smirks, fading into the crowd that began to gather around the collapsed man. A medical droid reaches the body, while screams of disgust begin to echo through the crowd.

RUN! Every bone in your body is screaming for you to flee.

So you oblige.

You sprint through the crowd, shoving those around you to the floor. As you make for the door, a pair of security droids move to stop you. In desperation you thrust out a hand, trying to recall the sensation from the Holocron. A tingle runs through your arm and the droids stumble out of the way.

You clear the doors, bursting into the main square. You and Choni were here just hours ago, plotting out your adventure. Now the market stalls were just another obstacle in your path, the crowds were just something holding you back, and you needed to be far, far away.

Your lungs burn as you clatter through the crowd, desperation filling your mind. What were you running from? You didn't know. You felt a burning heat on your back, like the sun itself was glaring down upon you, trying to erase you from the surface of the world.

Out of the market, past the stalls selling junk, past Erls Catina, you ran and ran. You were in your neighborhood. Nobody could catch you here. You pause to catch your breath.

The ground shakes. You turn your attention behind you. A deafening roar tears across the din of the city, leaving silence in its wake. Then another, then another. A cloud of dust sweeps past you, filling the entire air with sand and grit. As you watch, a chain of explosions erupt from the very surface of Kal's palace, the clean silver facade, torn and smoking. Chunks of debris, big as houses, fall onto the surrounding district. Wheezing in the dirty air, you try to shake yourself back to your senses.

Then you feel her, her presence burning like a torch through the blackness that surrounds you. Slow, deliberate footsteps. That's when you realize you can't run, not from her.

"You have something that belongs to me." She purrs. "I want it back."

You're done with running. It's brought you nothing good anyway.

"Do you mean that you killed Kal for THIS?" You pull out the Holocron and throw it at her feet. "My friend died, all those people died, for this worthless box?"

You pull out your blaster. "I don't expect that you'll let me live. You probably don't want another witness to your theft." The woman raises an eyebrow. "How perceptive of you." You point the muzzle of your blaster directly at her torso.

"Good, then it won't be a problem when I do this." You frantically pull the trigger, sending bolt after bolt of superheated plasma at the woman. Five shots flash towards her, burning through the black smoke.

She seems to blur before your vision, the shots passing right through her. Her aura pulses and your body locks up, every muscle frozen in place. Desperately you try to break free, but your body just won't respond.

"It seemed that the Force was strong with you. In the right circumstances, I may have let you live as my apprentice." She sighs, running a hand along your chin. You notice that her sleeve is smoking. One of your shots landed true. You manage to shake your bonds just enough to give a small snort of satisfaction.

"But it seems you were weak after all. Now you die." She unsheathes a glowing blade. Red hot, red with heat, red with hate. A hate that mirrors your own.

You guys actually rolled better than expected.

>Little shit stole from you
>tried to kill you
>hates you so much that showing you first moment of weakness he WILL kill you
>make him your apprentice

Please anon, Sith are dumb but they're not that dumb. Even Palpatine made sure Anakin's hate wasn't directed at him before making him an apprentice.

You reach deep inside yourself, searching for an inner strength.

What you find is hate. As the blade swings towards you, you manage to force your body to move. The bonds placed upon you shatter and you step backwards just in time to avoid a painful death.

"So, you are stronger than I thought." The woman clenches a fist, attempting to bind you again. But you know what to do this time. As you feel your body beginning to constrict, you push your energy outwards and step free.

"It'll take more than that to bring me down!" You pump two more shots her way. A flash of red light sees them deflected. She crouches low, then leaps high into the air, saber plunging down towards your head. You manage to roll forwards just in time.

Raising the blaster in a shaking hand, you try to crouch into a stable firing position.

Suddenly, the blaster is wrenched from your grip, split in two by the blazing heat of the red blade.

"Surrender now and live." The power you're sensing from her rises, from the heat of a furnace to a towering inferno. "But your life belongs to me, your mind belongs to me. Do you understand?"

Your burning rage ebbs away. You will find no justice here. But where there is life, hope springs eternal.

You fall to your knees. "I accept. Take me, for all I am. Teach me if you will."

That was your last day as Kane Gerric, and your first as the Adept.

End.

Thanks for running!
>>
And that's it for today. I can't believe I managed to run for 9 hours (well, 8) straight.

Thanks for reading everyone. The next thread (or should I say the first thread?) will be announced on twitter and in /wqdt/ and /swg/. It'll probably be next Saturday. I'm liking this longer timeslot.

I'm going to crack open the Finlandia to celebrate clearing the prologue, so hit me up with questions if you've got them.

We don't have to go to the sith academy right?
>>
>>45972238
No. You won't be a Sith at all, but you will learn the ways of the Dark Side.

Sheev and Vader are very much a thing in the galaxy at large, and we know how Sheev feels about other Sith.

So she and Mace are going to show up as lovers and our enemies at a later point aren't they?
