Ah fuck it, you were up early with yard-work this morning, you can afford to take a break. You gently peel back the covers and slip under them. Lucky for you Trish’s bed is bigger than yours and the both of you fit pretty comfortably. You set an alarm for an hour and half on your phone and lay your head down on the paisley patterned pillows and shut your eyes.

….Yeah Trish hasn’t stopped snoring, has it only gotten louder over the years? It’s been a while since you two shared a bed. Eventually you start to drift to sleep….
Everything is dark, empty. There is nothing, except, you. You stand alone in the Void, it watches you, it listens to your thoughts. It know your hopes and dreams, and your inner most fears. Normally this would be disconcerting, but it’s actually the opposite. The emptiness, the Void, is calming. It is serenity separated from chaos. Then something changes, you change. The Void begins peeling back, the darkness and emptiness thinning. The peace and tranquility shattered in a mere instant, and for a moment you see something beyond the edge of the Void.
Something looking back at you…

It looks like an eye

Your eyes fly open as soon as your phone’s alarm goes off. That was…. Different. You can’t remember the last time you dreamed. That was unlike any dream you’ve ever had, it felt real. What was all that? That eye? You shake your head, you can worry about this later. You move to turn your phone off when you notice her. Trish, somehow, has managed to wrap her arms around your middle and is resting her head on your right boob.

This is somewhat awkward.

You sigh and rest your head back onto the pillow, Trish can wait for minute, you have to try and figure out what the hell that dream was. You focus on your breathing for a moment and try to enter the Void. You reach out to the Void and it reaches out, and you can see… Nothing. It’s exactly the same as it usually is, empty and peaceful. Maybe it wasn’t something external breaking into your Void, maybe it was something from inside? Ugh, this sucks, if it wasn’t someone else what could it have been? What could change the Void’s shape like that?

You sigh dejectedly and stop your introspection, maybe you’ll just have to try again later. Now back to the problems at hand, namely Trish being plastered to your boob. You go to remove her when a particularly evil idea cross your mind. You keep yourself from giggling as you grab your phone and take a picture of her cuddled up on you.

The blackmail you could get from this….

After a minute or two of snickering you gently shake your tiny friend awake. She groans and grumbles and opens her eyes to see you smiling smugly at her.

“Have a good nap?” You ask her in a sing-song voice.

“Yep, you ready to go? I could use a few more hours of sleep but we need to get going.” She tells you completely nonplussed.

…..Why is she only cute when she’s asleep?

You groan and get up off the bed, Trish quickly untangling herself from you and putting her glasses on. She puts on some street clothes as you stretch a bit, working a few kinks out. Then an errant thought crosses your mind, you were about to go see a WIZARD, and despite what Kondo has told you the thought of being forcibly bound scares you a bit. The lack of freedom is entails, the powerlessness you’d have at the hands of your master…

You unconsciously start rubbing your neck again. You look at Trish slipping into another over-sized anime hoody and a thought crosses your mind.

“Hey Trish?”

“Yeah, what’s up?” She responds.

“Well I was just thinking about the fact we’re going to meet someone neither of us knows, who is apparently a Wizard.” Trish rolls her eyes.

“Yes, that’s the plan, don’t blow a gasket in worrying about it.”

“It’s just that…. I’m worried about being forcibly bound again. I don’t think I could deal with that again, when it happened I kind of destroyed a bunch of trees.” Trish stays silent for a moment.

“Are you trying to ask me to bind you?”

Just some quick mechanic notes.

The binding always scales in size with the Oni, so it doesn't break in Oni form.

Also it's almost indestructible, but in the case of it breaking you'll feel oddly disconnected and dizzy for a few moments. The bond will still be their but it will be a bit muddied until you can replace the binding. Basically just a sensory debuff for the servants lord sense.

It shouldn't come up and is pretty easy to fix, just thought you guys would want to know.

You can’t see from your position what’s in it, but she quickly scurries back over and grabs your wrist. You hear a tiny ‘click’ before feeling magic flow through you and into…

It’s honestly hard to hold the tears back, you’re feeling so many different emotions right now. You glance downward and see Trish smiling up at you, tears unashamedly pouring down her face.

Happy to stick around, it's been a fun ride so far. Although Friday night is one thing, Sunday is killing me since work in five hours.

You don’t even hesitate, you scoop Trish up into a huge hug, fighting back the tears of happiness in your eyes. You’re actually kind of holding her like a child, she’s small but not that small….

Oh, shit, you changed into Oni form. But none of your clothes are destroyed, how does that even work?

You set Trish down gently and pat her head as the last of her tears fall down.

“Alright, I’m alright.” She says, mostly to herself. “Let’s get going if we dilly dally anymore we’ll be late. But first you need to shrink back down, you kinda sprung up when I finished my speech.” You nod and then the both of you quickly make your way back to your car, Trish grabbing a granola bar before you head out.

You swear you can hear her say “I don’t deserve a friend like you.” When you leave the house, but it was so quiet it could’ve just been the wind.

The Drive to the Wizard’s place was surprisingly short, apparently she (it is a woman as it turns out) has a small office/shop in the Galleria. The small office is in one of the strip-centers that litters the area, It doesn’t even look like any wizard’s lair you’ve ever seen. The sign just reads
“KLEIN’S HOME REMEDIES AND HERBALIST.”

As you and Trish walk in a bell chimes merrily from the door and a bubbly breathy voice greats you from the back room.

“I’ll be with you in just a minute!”
You glance down a t Trish and giver a skeptical look, she returns it and just shrugs.

“Just go with it.” You give a non-committal grunt and start to wait. Your patience is rewarded in only a few seconds, as an overweight blonde woman in her late twenties walks out from what you presume to be the back room. She catches your eye and lights up with an immaculate smile that frames her rosy cheeks and bright blue eyes rather well.

“You’re the three o’clock then?” She asks in her bubbly voice. You and Trish nod, and her smile gets even bigger. “You must be Trisha and Amy, what a pleasure! I’m Christin Klein, botanist, herbalist and Journeyman Wizard extraordinaire!” she exclaims as she rushes over and shakes yours and Trish’s hands. “Why don’t you two come with me to the back, I have a pot of tea that’s almost boiling. We can share a cup!”

This is…. Not what you expected at all.

The Short answer is it depends on how experienced the Wizard is. Human magic is very distinct in that regard.

May I ask why an Oni can function spiritually in America as well as Japan (is there spiritual gating like in XS's game)?

Because most Oni powers in my mythos are fueled by the elements and their own genetic magic. It has less to do with Japanese spiritualism and more to do with Oni just being magical in their own right.

This doesn't apply to everything though, an Eastern Dragon would lose a lot of their power by coming to the west because most of their power is spiritual.

Another example would be the Fae, when the Fae were chased from the Old World they lost the majority of their amazing power. (Although they're starting to get it back by converting more and more of America's wild spaces into Fae domains which is pissing of the Native spirits quite a bit)
