The Mechanics pastebin has been updated. Dialogue choices with combat stats may now incur rolls. Dexterity (DEX) has been added to the quest. This is mainly to distinguish between skill with the hands and the ability to maneuver one’s body well. Various parts have been tweaked to make them more readable.

As the Wild Card and the Leader of the Void’s Chosen, you have found yourself in a number of dangerous situations over the course of your life, wittingly or not. Shadows assaulting you in the Forgotten City. Diseased elves shambling towards the party like the average movie zombie. Evil knights charging at the team in the scorching plains of Pyre Ruin Valley, wearing enough armor to construct a fridge. Exams at school, in which enough blood, sweat and tears are generated to flood all the hallways of the classroom block.

But this…

This may be the random encounter that takes the cake. As you take a quavering step back in the school courtyard, the fear in your eyes as obvious as blood to a shark, you rack your brains and attempt to understand how things had turned out this way. What mistakes did you make? Could this tragedy have been avoided, had you made the right choices? What exactly did you do wrong to let events spiral this much out of your control?

Celeste Tachibana, the cheerful half-American Magician. Fumika Shibuya, the gloomy computer expert Hermit. Aria von Wittelsbach, the frail, foreign artistic Devil. Last but not least, Yoshino Sagisawa, the panicky House Captain whose Arcana escapes you at this moment. Your four female friends stand several metres in front of you, their respective weapons equipped. A dark miasma, an aura of clashing purples, greys and blacks, radiates from their bodies like smoke rising from the center of a bonfire. Even though the sun is out, the sheer weight of the force seems to vanquish all the light from the world, destroying it photon by photon until nothing but shadows and bloodstains remain.

Yet, even that is not what horrifies you the most. The four girls shamble forward and you are forced to look into their faces. Thus, contact is made with the abominations that have gouged out their eyeballs and burrowed deep into the empty sockets. Gone are the energetic sparks within Celeste, the inquisitive gazes of Fumika, the fearful glances from Aria and the neurotic surveying of Yoshino. From each girl twin voids stare back, tiny pools of dead emptiness in space-time that suck away your hopes and spit out an unholy mixture of hatred, bloodlust and pure, undulated rage. Your soul is pierced. Then it’s stabbed a dozen times, speared, cleaved, shot with a hundred hollow point rounds, covered in petrol and set alight.

Celeste draws her rapier from its scabbard, muttering strings of incomprehensible words under her breath. Fumika taps her pistol, reloading it. Aria and Yoshino do whatever the hell they need to do.

In the span of time it takes you to blink, Celeste has crossed the distance between you and her and jammed the tip of her rapier beneath her neck. You are frozen in spot, head tilted back, a sharp piece of metal threatening to slit your throat at a moment's notice.

“Takashi-kun, my darling Takashi-kun.” She cooes, looking deep into you. Her free hand reaches out to gently caress your cheek, causing shivers to travel down your spine. “Words cannot describe how I felt towards you. More than my mother, more than my father, more than my siblings, more than any of my fellow Players, I loved you. There was no doubt within my heart that you were my most precious person in the world. When you said you reciprocated my feelings, I was so happy my heart threatened to burst with joy.” Her breath comes in heavy spurts. Her body twitches. A wide, toothless grin is plastered on her pretty features, a twisted grimace carved onto a doll fueled by bloodthirst and the promise of your demise. “And yet you…you dared to…”

“Celeste, I—”

The shrill humming of a plasma pistol draws your attention from the manic girl in front of you.

“Since you have toyed with our hearts to this extent, manipulating us in order to fuel your perverted desires, we have to the conclusion that you are now unnecessary. Un-ne-ce-ss-ary~!” Fumika, aiming her weapon directly at your head, speaks the last word with a sunny smile normally reserved for Celeste when she eyes a discount on chocolate oranges in the supermarket aisles. It almost makes your bladder empty itself.

A fist slams into your chest and you choke. You look down.

It’s no use. She hits you for the third time and your words are shoved straight back down your throat.

“Idiot! Jerk! Bastard! I hate you, Takashi!” She shrieks, raining a flurry of blows onto your chest. For a girl so pale and frail, who has likely never worked out in your life, her punches hurt like hell! “I hate you! I HATE YOU!”

“Um, I’m a little unsure what happened…” Yoshino begins, raising her finger to her lips. Whatever brief hope you have that someone, anyone might be a little bit reasonable is immediately smashed to a thousand pieces as she slams the finger in your direction. An orb of wind gathers in her other palm. “But it’s definitely your fault, Takashi! You’re so cruel! Did those Valentine’s Day chocolates mean nothing to you?”

At the mention of this, Celeste’s smirk widens and she jams the tip of her blade into the skin covering your throat, drawing a trickle of blood. Fumika withdraws her pistol and takes out a laser rifle, which had been strapped to her back for one reason or another. Aria’s next punch sinks hard into your stomach, cracking several ribs. You spit out blood.

“Goodbye, Takashi.” Aria whispers, brandishing a kitchen knife. It’s covered in animal fat for some reason.

“If only you became a House Assistant, this might’ve never happened…” Yoshino sighs.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” You roar.

So. This is how events have played out.

Your best friend, who will likely become a former friend after everything has ended, wants to slit your throat. Your Spotter wants to fill you with so many holes that you become more flesh-tasting cheese than man. Aria threatens to break every bone in your body and you think Yoshino feels like flailing all of your skin off, leaving only a body of muscles to be fried by the afternoon sun.

You will die surrounded by women. Somehow, this is a lot less heavenly than your fourteen year old self sitting in front of his computer imagined it to be.

As the four girls advance towards you, each one prepared to reduce your body into a mass of blood and discarded flesh, you try to comfort yourself the knowledge that you will die by the hands of those you know. It fails. Actually, it just makes your impending doom worse. The way these four are enraged, your death will probably be painful and elongated.

Still, at least nothing can top this, right?

If the four girls were angry before, they are now so enraged that the Asura himself would have cowered in sheer terror. They turn towards you. It takes all of your WILLPOWER not to be reduced into a pile of jelly on the spot.

“Ha ha ha…” Celeste giggles, what remaining light in her eyes vanishing like a quenched candle. “So that’s how it is…”

“Fooling around with the most powerful woman in recorded history…” Fumika says, her voice dripping with both awe and hatred. “Truly, Takashi Wakui, your adultery knows no bounds.”

“Why her?” Aria wails. Her tears are gone, leaving only bloodshot, empty eyes behind. “She's worse than Hitler! Don’t understand!”

“This is getting more and more confusing…” Yoshino mumbles, “But I’m still very angry!”

Kaede Kurusu clears her throat, catching everyone's attention. “Excuse me, ladies. Could you please step aside? I have a few words to say to my predecessor.”

Instead of running away or calling the national army like any sensible person would do, the four girls look at each other, shrug their shoulders and let her pass. You get the feeling that Kaede Kurusu has just been accepted into a secret club. One’s that vying for your blood.

“Much appreciated.” With a wave of her hand, Kaede Kurusu knocks you to the ground. She towers over you, her face a mask of cold, calm fury. She then launches into a speech, the words seemingly tearing everything out of your mind, discarding them into a black hole, until only her truth remains.

He’s wearing the same clothes as the previous encounter in the Grey Ward, with the exception of a few minor sauce stains on his blazer. He also has what you believe is his school bag on his back. It’s just like the place he lives in: worn and cheap.

It does a roaring trade nonetheless, sustaining itself on the wallets of the blue-collared lower-class, who can’t be bothered to look on the Internet for ways to create cheap, healthy meals. The place is packed, but you manage to find a seat near the bins.

Chikashi slides a burger across the table top. You unwrap it. Your hands are immediately covered in warm, animal grease. It’s got chicken, bacon, lettuce and cheese in it. The smell is almost nauseous. Scrunching your nose, you refrain from biting into it.

“So, what do you have to say?” You ask, staring at him. He hasn’t touched his food, either.

Chikashi struggles with the words in mouth. They come out grudgingly after a few seconds, like a blockage oozing messily from the insides of a sewer drain. “I’m sorry for how I acted. You saved my ass and it was wrong for me to yell at you.”

“Look man, I apologized alright. Eat your burger and go.” He tries to avoid the question. You feel irritation pricking at the base of your skull.

He groans, a long, drawn out sound that seems to bounce around the entirely of the fast food restaurant, covering all its occupants in misery. He gnashes his teeth, twisting his mouth, avoiding your eyes until he slams his palms on the table.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever. I’m sorry. For trying to get money off you or something. We done here?”

He huffs and looks in the opposite direction. “Not that I expect you to understand…”
