Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you crept around a library in pursuit of ancient knowledge.

It is currently the 29th of Svarthi, in the year 936 NH.

You retreat around the corner, pressing your back into the cold stone wall of the ancient chamber and channeling Metal to obscure your thoughts. You feel a pulse of vys, and suddenly find that you can no longer perceive the man who'd been searching for you. The skeletal outline of his limp form sketched by the soft suscitations of his breath has simply vanished from the floor where it lay.

His attacker's delicate footsteps carve out an image of the figure in your mind's eye. They are thin to the point of being gaunt and their once elaborately wrought robes have been rendered threadbare by the passage of ages. The creak of a hinge reveals to you an outline of the shelves along the left side of the room, and a few seconds later the weighty thud of a door closing sketches out in vagueries a small room beyond.

You wait, half expecting the figure to appear around the corner to drag you off with the Vatis who'd been stalking you. After a time you creep slowly up to the corner and peek your head around, relieved to find that the ancient samjan seems to be truly gone, and not simply lying in wait for you. Your eye is drawn once more to the shrine at the end of the hidden room, shielded as it is by a glowing barrier.

(1/2)
>>
The heavy wooden door through which the strange figure vanished is shrouded behind a set of heavy velvet curtains, and you watch it with a wary eye as you slip around the corner. You've no way of knowing how long you have to ransack the library unmolested, but if you're going to try and get past that barrier now would be the time to do so.

>Perhaps you can disassemble the enchantment generating the barrier?
>Screw this nonsense, you came here for a casual browse through the library. Sneak out while you still can.
>They say curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought him back. You have to know what lies on the other side of that door.
>You don't want to risk attracting the ancient's attention by disturbing the barrier, but perhaps you might find something of value hidden amongst the shelves.

You cautiously step through the rubble of the collapsed wall, into the once hidden chamber containing what you're hoping is a wealth of forgotten or obscure knowledge. You're disappointed when you grab a book off the shelf and crack the ancient wooden binding only to be assaulted by the stench of rust. The ink has faded to a dull brown where it's still legible at all, and eaten its way through the page. The time seems to detail the conquest of a city called 'Kurukmaea' by the forces of Hiacia, but you're unable to glean much more than that from the book's rotten pages.

Sighing, you shove the book back into its place on the shelf. Channeling a bit of Nature magic, you're momentarily blinded by the glow of the barrier separating the enshrined tome from the rest of the library. However, you're also able to pick up a few other spots of light in the room that you hadn't noticed before. Two books, almost directly opposite one another in their placement on the shelves, glow dimly in comparison to the light from the shrine. You also note a scroll half buried beneath a loose collection of parchment, and oddly enough three candles sitting near the base of the shrine, only one of which is lit.

Reaching into your cloak you extract gnarled wooden crown which once nearly caused the forfeit of your mortal vessel to the vile, unknown spirits. Now it serves only as a tool to enhance your skill in Nature magic, and as it comes to rest upon your brow the light of the shrine dims, and you're able to more easily pick out a fifth glow, this one beyond the door through which the ancient figure vanished. Oddly, you can pick out neither the Vatis who searched for you nor the figure that dragged him off. Even when you channel vys into the crown to expand its range, you do not see any sign of them.

File: Three Candles.jpg (36 KB, 250x353)

Turning your attention back to your current task, you retrieve a decrepit step ladder and place it just below one of the glowing books. You have to be careful climbing the ladder for fear it might shatter beneath your weight, but once you reach the third step you're able to reach up and drag the heavy codex from the shelf. It seems to be bound in the hide of some sort of reptilian creature, and the parchment reveals the same pattern to a lesser degree. You wouldn't typically think scaled hide to be good material for vellum, but ignoring the odd pattern of the scales it's really rather good quality.

As for the contents of the book, you're mildly disappointed to find they seem to be some sort of alchemical treatise. Worse, it's in a language you've never seen before. The language looks as though it may be related to Samjan, but each individual word is not joined as they are in Samjan, and the letters themselves may as well be random scribbling across the page. Still, the illustrations are very fine indeed. Perhaps Mortia could derive some use from the book.

You tuck the book into your cloak and descend the stepladder unsteadily. After repositioning the ladder to the opposite end of the room, you take a moment to insepct the three burned down candles. You are not sure what material the candles themselves are actually made of. It's translucent, which rules out the possibility of it being either tallow or bee's wax. It almost looks crystalline, but it's far too soft for that to be the case. The flame is strange as well, it burns green.

As you watch the flickering flame you feel as though you're being drawn in, the outside world bleeding away until only you and the candle remain. Once you realize that you're falling under the artifact's sway, breaking its hold is a simple matter. Still, you cannot help but wonder why someone would enchant a candle of all things.
(2/?)
>>
Out of curiosity you hold your hand palm flat above the flame, but feel no heat. Even when the unusually colored fire licks at your flesh it does not burn you. You find attempting to snuff out the candle a pointless task, for each time you extinguish the flame it flickers back to life the moment you remove your fingers from the wick.

Tucking the three candles into your cloak, you turn once more to the bookshelves and the rickety old stepladder. Once more you fear for your life as you scale the rotted wood, each step releasing a chorus of shrieking as it's forced to bear the burden of your weight. You retrieve the wood-bound tome from its place on the shelf and struggle momentarily with its weight, quickly retreating to solid ground before peeling open its unadorned cover.

To call the book's contents remarkable would be an understatement. At a glance it appears to be the journal, likely of a practical nature, detailing practical knowledge regarding the art of enchanting. Most pages seem consumed by text, but turning to a page still marked by a woven cord you find two remarkably detailed runic arrays, though you cannot claim to recognize many of the runes used in either.

In the interest of expediency you tuck the book into your cloak, glancing briefly towards the heavy oaken door through which the unknown figure had vanished. You still cannot detect them via Nature magic, but you are not wholly convinced that means they are not there. You quickly make your way towards where the final enchanted object in the room seems to lie, the scroll, and survey it only briefly.

It seems initially an introductory text on channeling vys, but as you unroll the parchment further you begin to wonder if it is not actually some sort of combat manual. It waxes on about disrupting the flow of vys through the body of one's opponent with nothing more than slight pressure upon the inner elbow. It also spends an inordinate amount of time detailing points on the hands and feet which might be used to debilitate an enemy. You shove it into your cloak alongside your other findings, your curiosity peaked.

With the last of your haul collected, you turn your attention once more to the half-hidden doorway. A part of you screams that you've gotten what you came here for, you found a practical manual on the art of enchanting. What more could you possibly want? Another part of you whispers of untold riches which could lie just beyond the door, and decries the travesty of leaving a stone left unturned in what is clearly a source of valuable knowledge.

That would work if he uses the Ranged effect, but if he cast it on touch, as he did with the Vatis who was looking for you, it wouldn't suffice.
>>
>>46319172
Pretty sure we have at least half a dozen ways to counter something like that.

and Anons will probably find more if it actually comes down serious danger like we're almost never in
>>
>>46319230
What if we invert the cloak? He'd have to cast touch by punching us in the face if we did that.
>>
>>46319230
Gotta call bullshit one that man, like i see us not being able to control it when his vys is in his reserves but once he casts is on us we should be able to attempt to manipulate it.
>>
>>46319230

Do the warlock armors or the Centurion armor have passive effect blocking abilities?
>>
We should get more Spice.

I miss having a Fuck Everything button.
>>
>>46319323
It's nice having a last resort 'kill everything in the room' option.
>>
>>46319266
If cast at range, it's a fairly distinct glob of vys that's easily picked out of the ambient vys and thus easily manipulated. However, once it begins to take effect it becomes muddled with your own vys reserves. You could certainly rip out your own reserves in the hopes of purging yourself of the malignant vys, but that wouldn't exactly be desirable.

I've remained fairly consistent about this throughout the quest. It's a bad idea to leech vys from someone under the effect of poison for the same reason, because you can't really pick and choose between the poisoned vys and the unpoisoned vys. You can at best guess that one area will not be affected because poison spreads from the point of contact. With sleep, you can't even necessarily be sure of that. I leave the reasons for why that is ambiguous.

>>46319253
If you inverted the cloak, it would basically need to hit you in the face to work, yeah. Otherwise the cloak would eat it.
>Implying you'll ever remember the cloak when that's relevant.

>>46319286
I'll have Mik put on his (regular) Warlock Armor, since he's still a bit burned out from using the Heavy Warlock Armor so much.

And nah, neither Centurion Armor nor the Warlock Armor block effects, though shields can block most effects if they're cast at range.

You remove the Forest King's Crown, the world suddenly seeming a much less vibrant place, and gently place it back inside your cloak. It's not but moments later that ethereal tentacles start to slide from within your cloak, securing to your chest the thick sheets of worm carapace which make up the cuirass of your Warlock Armor. More tentacles follow, sliding around your shoulders to tie on your pauldrons and wrapping around your arms to clamp your rerebarce shut around your upper arm.

Your helmet slides over your head just as you reach for the door handle, the stab of the needle into your spine barely registering as you grip the iron bar. Compared to the heavier version you've been wearing for the past few days, the pain feels almost pleasant. A comforting reminder that soon vys will dull the ache of your joints and suppress your anxiousness at what might lie beyond this door.

You pull it open gently, wincing as the hinges screech. On the other side you find a small, circular chamber. A pool of water sits within a depression and it's from this pool that a thin pillar rises, at the very center of he room. The pillar is crowned by a large opal, easily the size of your head, which seems to cast its own shifting, multicolored light across the walls. There are no doors in or out of the room, and channeling Nature magic in conjunction with Earth fails to reveal any hidden passages worth noting.

You've come this far, and you see little reason to back out now. You need do nothing more than place your hand upon the surface of the massive gemstone and channel vys. In an instant you're transported elsewhere, to the top of a grand staircase reaching out of an endless sea of fog. In front of you lies a grand palace, its golden domed pillars shining in the strange, omnipresent light. You see no sun, only more fog stretching upward, but if you had to guess it's late in the afternoon wherever you are.

(1/2)
>>
Behind you, the stairwell descends. The further down it goes the darker the world seems to become, until eventually you can make out nothing beyond the fog. You feel confident in your assessment of this place, wherever or whatever it is, as unnatural. The stones which make up this island in the fog form strange, unnatural arches which ought not be able to support themselves, and the palace itself seems to teeter upon an immense pillar of black stone.

Sadly, you see no obvious method of returning from whence you came. The thin pillar crowned by opal which transported you here is gone, and your hand grasps nothing save air.

>Descend the steps, into the black.
>Approach the palace, perhaps you find something of worth.

This is so we can:
A. Consult cat if we need to
B. Have a quick exit we can run to if shit hits the fan here
C. Reliably travel to and from here, in case of something happening to the transportation device in the library/us being locked out
>>
If the enchanter is still alive this shrine build is going to be absolutely hilarious.

When we gate back to Marquash.

TAKE THAT FUCKING GEM.

Seriously the runes to teleport like this are fucking invaluable and insanely useful not just to us but any type of business projects we can set up.

>>
>>46320640
Just think of what we could have if we focused on enchanting.
>>
Would it be at all possible to use enchanting to create a rebreather-like artifact that would provide oxygen to someone? If we could, we could use it to put living things/prisoners into the cloak, for safety or transportation.

Provided that Ricky doesn't eat or tentacle rape them
>>
>>46320731
We could jump into the cloak and have a tea party with Ricky.
>>
>>46320731
Yeah, that's totally possible. In fact, the helmet of your Warlock Armor (both versions) does this. Though doing so drains vys in the normal Warlock Armor. In the Heavy it's just a passive function.

The only tricky part is working out a system that removes the air you exhale without destroying the air you're creating.
>>
>>46320780
Why not convert pure vyz into air
>>
>>46320780
Couldn't we just work something out like "Destroy+(Poison+Air)"?
Or maybe (Invert+Revert)+Air, to refine the carbon dioxide we exhale into just plane ol' oxygen again?
>>
>>46320802
You'd end up with the pressure in your helmet increasing to uncomfortable and possibly dangerous levels depending on how long you wore it.

>>46320812
With the first method, you'd also need a Create Air array, likely placed near the mouth, with the destroy array placed near the top of the helmet. Problems would arise since you don't know the poison rune.
The second method is by far the better of the two.
>>
>>46320802
Because converting pure vys into substances costs huge amounts of vys and is complicated.

Not sure if e=mc^2 applies in this universe with vys, but its definitely expensive.
>>
>>46320780
That's incredibly simple and doesn't even need magic to do it, just a matter of the mechanical design.

Make it have 2 chambers, one set up for creating air and the other set up for destroying air. and then have a little rubber (or similar material) stopper dividing them set up so that inhaling pulls it towards us and seals off the destroy chamber while exhaling pushes it forward and makes our breath flow into the destroy chamber. Similar design to what's used in pumps for inflating pool toys.
>>
>>46320874
That would also work, and would be well within the abilities of Skull Kid to create.
>>
>>46320861
Enchanting Bro.

>>46320874
Yea this is what modern day gas masks do. Fun fact when in a hazmat suit and you're exhaling you are technically exposed to the poison in the air.

Well at least military MOP suits, don't know about other shit.
>>
>>46320855
What's the air composition of air created by "Create Air"? Is it somehow encoded into the rune? Could it be changed at all?

My question is purely hypothetical; we're probably never going to be scientifically advanced enough to even conceptualize messing with chemical compositions of stuff.
>>
>>46320896
>within the abilities of Skull Kid to create.

Speaking of that, have we gotten SK started on enchanting? If not, we definitely should. He probably can't finalize, but he wouldn't need magic to design runic arrays/techno-magical OP-as-fuck stuff. You step forward warily, until you come to stand just before the stairs leading up to the palace gates. Your presence seems to disturb a flock of birds of a sort you've never encountered before which were foraging in the grass, and they take flight with a great clamor of flapping wings and squawking beaks. You find your eye drawn to their colorful plumage, and cannot help but wonder just where it is this place lies. Is it a home built by some forgotten enchanter deep within the void, or is it the realm of a powerful spirit? Do you lie within the base reality, or within one of the more distal shells?

Unfortunately, you've more important matters to attend to than bird watching. You take a seat and begin to channel vys with the intention of carving a shrine out of the black stone which this island in the clouds is built from. However, as the ground begins to bend and warp you hear a sharp, unpleasant tone ringing in your ear. At first it's barely noticeable, but as the shrine begins to take place it grows louder and louder until it reaches a crescendo, and with a sharp snap falls silent.

You catch a brief glimpse of thin, golden thread before the world begins to break down, the ground and your aborted shrine collapsing into the yawning black of the void. You're taken by surprise, but before you're able to react reality reasserts itself. You stare at the ground as it was before your tampering, any evidence of the shrine you'd been crafting gone.

Standing cautiously, you channel Nature. You're able to perceive flashes of gold, nearly imperceptible. However, unlike in the reality you're accustomed to these threads are wrapped around thick ropes of silver which carve through the world around you, unaffected by your efforts to exert your will. You recognize them from your previous foray into the private realm of an enchanter, and you're able to say with confidence that you've found yourself within the void.

(1/3)
>>
Why do the threads snap here when you attempt to create a shrine, but not when you do so in the base reality? Even when you were within the realm of a spirit you were still able to construct a shrine, through which the Cat was able to launch an invasion. What is it that makes these threads so evidently fragile? Clearly they have some inborn way of repairing themselves, for the breach in the structure of this realm survived only briefly before the facade reasserted itself, but you would not usually think such measures necessary.

Regardless, you abandon your efforts and ascend the stairwell. The palace seems to wrap around the plateau which crowns this pillar, built into the sheer cliff face. The doors tower above you, and yet swing open with only the slightest prompting on your part. You enter the halls of the palace with a distinct sense of unease which is only intensified when the doors swing shut behind you of their own volition.

The interior of the palace is opulently adorned, the floors an elaborate tiling rendered in black, white, and gold. Just looking at it makes you dizzy, it seems to draw you in, the tiles swirling together into one as you look on. As your head begins to ache you force yourself to look away, wandering deeper into the palace structure. You pass through an arched doorway into a throne room, where your eyes are drawn from the floor to the enormous golden sphere hovering just behind the raised dais on which sits a comparatively stark throne.

You slip behind a pillar, apparently unnoticed by the figure seated on the throne. It's the same person you saw incapacitate the Vatis searching for you, their skin drawn tight against the bones of their skull and their ears reduced to little more than cartilage, great chunks ripped from the skin. They are covered in all manner of elaborate jewelry, and here their robes seem somehow finer, less worn by the passage of time.

You think the figure is a woman, and an old one indeed. She sits with her eyes closed apparently in meditative calm, her breathing slow and rhythmic. Part of you wonders if you couldn't sneak close and put a dagger through her forehead, but another scolds you for thinking of it. She has done you no harm, yet. Jumping directly from meeting to attempted murder would seem a touch excessive.

>Whoever she is, she's probably your best chance of getting out of here. Try to draw her attention.
>Search around for some other exit, you should try to find that Vatis who was looking for you.
>Draw your trident, and approach cautiously. Maybe you can get the drop on her.

Reality is a program.
Everything within is code in the form of the strings (AKA Runes)
While code makes up Eveything(tm) it also clusters around tiny pieces of a God (Surya) to make Sentients
Sentients can sometimes become Programmers, rewriting the Source Code. Functional AIs on the internet rewriting their own reality.

Don't think I missed anything but that's the stupid people version of it.

Soul is basically our tiny piece of God and the vys it emanates.
Body is a simple physical object like a sword or a table.
Mind is the weight of our piece of God on The Strings. It acts like gravity, warping and twisting to create what we know of as the mind.

That's why when you dissolve parts of the Soul (lessening it's "weight") you begin to lose outer aspects of your mind. Only your core personality is stored in your Divine shard.
>>
>>46323674
We have almost all of the puzzle pieces. Hell we've even had large portions of them put together for us.
>>
>>46323693
If that, then large+gravity+mind would make us way smarter

After a moment's indecision, you step out into the open and advance towards the circle of light cast from a small skylight. Your cloak draws itself together, regaining shape and form as the light falls across it. It would probably appear to any outside observe that you stepped out of the shadows and they draped themselves across your shoulder as a cloak. Gods above, you love this thing.

Unfortunately the woman wasn't able to see your theatrics, she remains in a meditative trance. You feel a little awkward interrupting her, knowing how jarring it is to be woken prematurely from a trance, but if the alternatively is wandering uninvited through her home you suppose interrupting her meditation is the lesser of two evils. Clearing your throat fails to draw her attention, and tapping the heel of your boot against the tile offers a similar lack of results.

Growing frustrated, you clap your hands together forcefully. The sound echoes in the vast hall, and the no doubt ancient Vatis finally awakens with a start. In an instant you find yourself surrounded by two dozen ghostly men, their incorporeal spears leveled at your throat. You wouldn't call it a particularly intimidating sight, all things considered. What are they going to do, blow smoke in your face?

The guards vanish as the woman sets her eyes upon you, and you notice for the first time they lack any sclera. Her eyes are bronze in color and gleam metallically in the soft light cast from above. If you were forced to guess, you'd say she had her real eyes replaced at some point with some manner of artifact.

A coy smile draws up the edges of her blackened lips, her posture seeming more relaxed than it was a moment ago. When she speaks her voice is barely more than a whisper, but it carries well in the high-ceilinged throne room. “Ah, my apologies young one. I suppose I allowed myself to be drawn in to the minutiae of the dissection. It is so rare that I find myself with a subject, I think I may have gotten ahead of myself.”

You're not sure you like the sound of dissection, but you'll ignore it for now. “My apologies for disturbing you, normally I would not think of it. I am Mikhael of the house Abdul-Hakim, and I seem to have found myself trapped here in your lovely palace.”

The woman's smile widens, revealing a hodgepodge collection of gold and silver. Only her two front teeth seem to be her own, and they seem exceptionally well maintained at that. “You would not be the first, slave boy.” You wrinkle your nose at the title, just how long has this woman been withdrawn from society? “Though I confess it strikes me as odd that slaves would be garbed so richly. Fitting for the slave of the Shahanshah, I suppose.”

It's difficult to keep in mind the woman likely does not know better. You must admit, it grates you to be called a slave. “You misunderstand. Abdul-Hakim is the name of my clan, it is not a mark of my rank. My ancestors were freed by the Shah for transporting him safely out of the ruins of Hiacia.”

The woman's smile falters, confusion setting in. “I suppose the library is getting a little unkempt but I don't know if I'd call it a ruin. You'll simply need to speak with that Basir fellow, he's a reliable sort. I would have done so myself, had not my work been keeping me so busy.”

The rune "gravity" is something entirely different than what i was referring to. I was using it as an analogy.

All the gravity in the world wouldn't directly affect the mind (besides obvious death and shit)

You're just looking for something to make the mind have more impact or "weight".

That is the sole purpose of the Inversion + Reversion rings. Massive intelligence boost, basically upgrades the mind.
>>
>>46323755
Nah that guys a shithead I just want to become a magical arms dealer because we are one of about two people on the planet who can enchant
>>
You don't know if you want to have this particular conversation at the moment, so you resolve to placate her. “I'll see that he gets right on the task of restoring it to its natural glory. Assuming of course you'll kindly transport me back to the base reality.”

The woman rises from her throne, descending the steps slowly. Despite her apparent age she stands tall and proud, her posture straight and her head held high. As she reaches the bottom step she places a skeletal hand upon your shoulder, and you reach a hand into your cloak to grip the handle of your dagger just in case she tries to pull the same trick on you that she pulled on the Vatis that was searching for you.

You relax when instead she begins to lead you towards what appears to be a solid wall. “Of course, boy. Of course, but first I simply must show you the state of the project.”

The golden panels which line the walls peel away, revealing a tall doorway through which the woman guides you. You pass through some manner of barrier and, even with all your mental defenses and your armor offering whatever protection it's able, you feel an oppressive presence bearing down upon you. It settles upon your shoulders as a weight, whispering of your inadequacies and your failings with every step further into the hallway you've found yourself in.

You exit the hall into a circular chamber, the only light offered by glowing crystals embedded in the walls. The same crystals you saw earlier lighting the abandoned portion of the library. Curious as that may be, your attention is quickly drawn to the center of the room where an elaborate headdress sits. It is wrought entirely from gold, with pearls resting along the brow. There are dozens of them, all save three of which are black. More black pearls are embedded throughout the headdress' construction, there must be hundreds in all.

The woman laughs dryly, and without pleasure. “Those fools labored endlessly to create their paradise, they told me that the divine could not be properly manipulated by a mere mortal. That to ascend was impossible for the individual. They lacked ambition, and I can only assume that still holds true.”

There's probably dozens who are still locked away in theirs right now.

drop her like a sack. nothing good has come from mortals trying to ascend.

>but anon, she is maintaining the pocket reality! killing her might destroy it, with us in it!

doesn't matter, last time it happened it destroyed a massive part of the world. she must die and the artifact must be destroyed

That would literally be the absolute dumbest thing Mik has ever even concieved.

Playing with shit we not supposed to
Basically just rubbing our genitals all over what little kindness he has

Fulvia works on Vys concentration, not weight.

You don't understand much about BQ do you?
>>
>>46324031
Her Fucking soul you retard the one with complex instructions written on it
>>
>>46324002
First rule of magic: don't attack a wizard in his own home. Wizards are paranoid they spend 80% of their time preparing their defenses.

That applies infinitely more for Enchanters

And just think about those thousands and thousands of years.
>>
>>46324065
Fulvia doesn't have a soul you fuck.

She is thousands of layers of crystal each enchanted with insanely complex instructions. Creating AI.

She has no Divine Shard, No Soul. She has Vys and her Vys generator and her Vys crystal.

Her Pocket Dimension works upon absolutely saturating and area with a Fuck-Ton of Vys. Imitating how Spirits do it.
>>
>>46324098
That's what I'm trying to say her stand-in soul is made out of the same stuff our soul is made of so souls can be affected but enchantment
>>
>>46324155
Also we LITERALLY have a tattoo that affects our soul Soooo we can use enchantments like soul+weight to make ourselves smarter
>>
>>46324155
Her "stand in soul" is literally Vys crystal.

We have some of it in our claok. It is not he same shit.

But Souls can be affected by enchantment(i think), just not for the reason you're stating.
>>
>>46324204
Then how so I can stop being "retarded"
>>
>>46323806
We should ask her if she has anything she needs delivered to Basir or the Library owners. Free stuff is always good.
